Abstract:
AIDS, its cause, effect, and possible cure, has become a complex sociopsychological issue with ramifications extending far beyond the purely medical sphere. Spreading rapidly, with a higher incidence rate recorded among young people, the disease transcended the biomedical sphere, presenting sociocultural and psychological ramifications that go beyond its physical impact. With a higher incidence rate among male homosexuals, the epidemic raises morally sensitive questions which further confuse an already clouded picture. Current knowledge on the sexual transmission of AIDS and the role of male homosexuality demonstrates the need for more serious research into the various social and cultural aspects of homosexuality itself. To this end, medical anthropology may provide important information to those dealing with educational and preventive programs for the general population, as well as those in high risk groups for acquiring the disease.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction: Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) is defined as a group of autosomal recessive disorders characterized by a deficiency of the enzyme required to synthesize cortisol by the adrenal cortex. Defects in the 21-hydroxylase enzyme make up 90% of CAH. These defects impaired cortisol synthesis leading to an ACTH increase resulting in androgen excess in both salt-wasting (SW) or simple virilizing (SV) forms. As androgens play a role in the human psychosexual development favoring male psychosexuality, this study was designed to evaluate the impact of androgen exposure on the psychosexuality of individuals with CAH due 21-hydroxylase deficiency. Methods: This retrospective cohort includes 46,XX individuals (115 female-assigned; 8 male-assigned) with a molecular diagnosis of CAH due to CYP21A2 pathogenic variants in homozygous or compounds heterozygous state. External genitalia virilization was scored using Prader scale. Phenotype, time at diagnosis, sex assignment, and gender change were assessed. The gender role at childhood was assessed through the playmates and toys profile at childhood. Gender identity was assessed by a projective psychological test (HTP). Sexual orientation was assessed by self-report sexual identity. Compliance of glucocorticoid replacement was assessed by adequate testosterone and androstenedione serum levels for age. Results: CAH was diagnosed at the neonatal time in 73% (n=78). Fifth-nine (51%) had the SW form and 49% (n=56) had the SV form. While all cases of SW were diagnosed at the neonatal time (0.12 ± 0.14 months), the mean age at diagnosis among SV was 6.03 ± 8.45 years (p=<.001). The median of Prader score was 3 in both forms. Male sex assignment was associated with more virilized external genitalia (p=.002). Gender change occurred in 6 cases (female to male), all with SV form. The prader score was higher among those who changed gender (p=.01). All of those who changed their gender had poor treatment compliance. A total of 13% (n=15) of all groups defined themselves as homosexual. There was a strong association between male toys and preference for male playmates in childhood with homosexuality and male gender identity in adulthood with both gender change from female to male and homosexuality. Conclusion: Prenatal androgen exposure favors male psychosexuality in 46,XX CAH individuals as observed by the association between highest Prader scores and all assessed psychosexual outcomes. This influence is also substantiated by post-natal androgen exposure as observed by compliance issues and late diagnosis among those who changed from female to male gender.

LANGUAGE NOTE | Document text in Chinese; abstract also in English. Homosexuality exists in all times, all countries, all ethnic groups and all social classes. A survey shows that 2% of married men and women have homosexual experiences. It is a controversial issue on what causes a human being to be a homosexual. Many traditional behaviourists claims that homosexuality is a result of going astray in the course of growth and development. Although homosexuality has been excluded from mental illness by psychologists, but the public including a part of homosexuals themselves still think homosexuality perverse. But the majority of homosexuality maintain that homosexuality is not a choice, nor a disease, but a personal identity. The biological study on homosexuality began in the 18th century. In 1989 psychiatrists concluded that personal life in various aspects is determined by biological, familial, social and cultural factors of various kinds, sex orientation is a part of personal life, homosexuality is formed by more than one factor. But the dispute on nature v. nurture on homosexuality is still not solved: whether homosexuality is determined by environment or genetics. The findings of biological studies on homosexuality, especially on the correlation between homosexuality and brain structure in 1990s seem to s how that homosexuality is determined by genetic factor or at least influenced by this factor. But it cannot be ignored that the environment and psychological dynamics mechanism play a certain role in it. However, these findings caused further controversy. People with different sex orientation seem to make different interpretation of these findings. Somebody worries about that if homosexual gene is identified one day, this gene will be corrected by gene therapy, or the fetus with this gene will be aborted. Anyway, homosexuality is not simply preprogrammed, but a complex embodiment of one's value and personality. Gene is a only part of it, but not its whole.DOWNLOAD HISTORY | This article has been downloaded 30 times in Digital Commons before migrating into this platform.

Abstract:
Although cross-dressing is a long-standing pantomime tradition, recent pantomimes have featured a male actor playing a traditionally female part while not cross-dressing. An illustration of this is the part of the Fairy in a version of Cinderella developed by production company Qdos Entertainment and performed at the Milton Keynes Theatre in 2017–18, while being toured elsewhere in previous and later years. Casting British celebrity fashion consultant Gok Wan as the Fairy had transgressive potential to promote empowering and positively disruptive attitudes towards gender. Wan the celebrity, in a similar way to the Fairy in Cinderella, uses psychological transformation, with a helping hand from clothes, to give women more confidence in their bodies. However, the overriding focus of the pantomime was on signalling Wan’s homosexuality while dispelling it as harmless. Clichés about gay men were reinforced in the production and paratexts, particularly through the approach to transformation, the use of costuming to frame Wan as Other, the language around being a fairy and the emphasis on male friendship as opposed to romance. When each of these aspects is compared to alternative representations in other popular and widely circulated versions of Cinderella, the reductive nature of this pantomimic portrayal becomes clear, irrespective of Wan’s degree of complicity.

Abstract:
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Objective. </strong>To describe the relations between liking visual representations of male same-sex romance and gender representations of young female fans of BL. <strong>Background. </strong>Nowadays there is a globally spread interest in manga among teenagers. Manga has a vast diversity of styles, genres, and followers. Nevertheless, some heterosexual girls quite often demonstrate stable interest in the manga sub-genre focusing on homoerotic relationships between young &ndash; and frequently androgynous &ndash; male characters. This research has addressed an issue whether heterosexual girls&rsquo; liking for visual representations of male homosexuality in Boy&rsquo;s Love (BL) comics relates to their gender representations. <strong>Study design. </strong>The survey among the members of the Internet Social Media Manga Publics included: description of socio-psychological effects of viewing BL pictures, scaling attitudes towards masculinity ideology, exploration of gender role beliefs and description of femininity concepts. Comparison of the data between BL fans and other members of Manga Publics being acquainted with Boys&rsquo; Love, but deliberately neglecting it. Mann&ndash;Whitney U test, Fisher F test, and Pearson&rsquo;s chi-squared test are used. <strong>Participants. </strong>Russian sample: 140 female respondents 11-45 years old (M=17,95; SD=4,84). Main group consists of 90 respondents 11-45 years old (M=18,88; SD=5,22). Control group consists of 50 respondents 12-27 years old (M=16,79; SD=3,10). <strong>Measurements. </strong>Questionnaire of socio-demographic characteristics. Author&rsquo;s scale of socio-psychological effects of visual representations. Masculinity Ideology in Relationships Scale by J.H. Pleck, F.L. Sonenstein, L.C. Ku. Gendered Personality Characteristics (I.S. Klyotsina). Masculinity and Femininity Questionnaire by T.A. Bessonova &ndash; psycho-semantic version by N.V. Dvoryanchikov for examining individual femininity constructs. <strong>Results. </strong>Girls that fond of homoerotic drawn fictions prefer non-normative gendered traits combinations and give specific interpretation of their femininity. BL followers significantly often describe their femininity with traditionally masculine traits. Gender polarization is weak. Gender identity of female BL fans comply with non-orthogonal conceptualization. They believe that core of gender identity in every human being should consist of gender-neutral characteristics. Male emotionality, represented in homoerotic drawings, arrests attention of all respondents. But BL fans are less likely to perceive men in the light of normative (hegemonic) masculinity. <strong>Conclusions.</strong> Straight girls&rsquo; enthusiasm for BL is grounded in the possibility of apprehending their gender non-normativity/non-conformity within a fictional realty, and in BL manga meta-genre capability to display adequately significant aspects of new non-normative gender practices and ensure their social affirmation.</p>

Abstract:
We investigated the hypothesis that certain signs in the Draw-A-Person projective technique reflect male homosexuality. Human figure drawings from 88 gay and 88 heterosexual men, with no clinical psychological symptoms, were submitted to trained raters who were blind to the purpose of this research. The raters independently judged whether 21 signs, previously referenced in the literature as suggestive of male homosexuality, were present in the figure drawings. Only two signs, hair and hips, differentiated between groups. Results were interpreted in the light of changing social attitudes towards homosexuals and methodological problems of prior studies.

Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 50-54.
For many years psychodynamically oriented research into homosexuality has been a topic for controversy. The "gay" community as well as many more sociologically oriented researchers see any investigation of the psychodynamics of this orientation as implying pathology and therefore contributing to stigmatization of homosexuals. More recently, however, psychoanalytic writers have questioned traditional assumptions and pointed to a need to look at the diversity of homosexual adaptations. Of interest in a more recent perspective is Socarides' (1979) classification, distinguishing between pre-oedipal and oedipal types of homosexuals. This paper argues that while generalization about "homosexuals" is impossible, a psychodynamic approach is useful in looking at the meaning and adaptive function of the homosexual orientation in each individual client and thus understand it in relation to personality organization and behaviour. A brief summary of psychoanalytic theory of male homosexuality is given with an emphasis on Socarides' classification. Two case studies are presented in an attempt to illustrate the usefulness of a psychodynamic approach and of the oedipal - pre-oedipal distinction. It is suggested that this distinction be seen more as a continuum of varying levels of ego-functioning.

Taute, Harold Graeme. "The psychological role of homoeroticism in the spiritual growth of priests: a study of individuation processes and homoerotic sexualities." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002578.

Full text
Abstract:
The study explored the psychological role of homoeroticism in the spiritual growth of priests, using Grounded Theory and James Fowler’s stages of faith development as the basis for the research methodology. Three Anglican priests were interviewed using a semi-structured interview format. The research interview combined Fowler’s Faith Development Interview Guide and a semi-structured interview in order to ascertain the priests’ level of spiritual development, as well as to explore their experience of the homoerotic component to their sexuality, and its influence on their spiritual growth. The interviews and iterative analysis focussed on four major questions: (1) Are priests who experience and actively work at integrating the homoerotic aspect to themselves assisted thereby in their spiritual growth, and if so, how might this be accounted for?; (2) Following Fowler’s model of spiritual development, what processes characterise each priest’s approach to meaning-creation in their lives?; (3) Following Fowler’s model, can the psychological work of engaging with and accepting homoeroticism be conceived of as serving an initiatory function in the emergence of new processes of meaning-creation?; (4) What role does homoeroticism serve in the spiritual growth of priests? The interpretative phase consisted of three stages. A grounded theory analysis of each interview was undertaken, developing a model for understanding the role of homoeroticism in spiritual growth. In the second stage, the priest’s level of spiritual development was ascertained, using Fowler’s Faith Development Guide. The third stage linked each participant’s level of spiritual development (in Fowler’s terms) with their core stories regarding experiences, meanings, and roles of homoeroticism. Finally, an integrative theory of the role of homoeroticism in spiritual growth was developed, using Jungian and post-Jungian theory as a basis for the discussion. The results suggested that homoeroticism did not play any role in spiritual growth and individuation separate to the manner in which it was experienced as having been constructed by society and the Church, and separate to the manner in which each priest in the study expressed, experienced, or engaged with it. In this context the experience of homoeroticism appeared to play a diversity of roles, including representing the collective and personal shadow, the archetypal anima/animus, the archetypal puer/senex constellation, the transcendent function, and thereby, as an expression of these roles, contribute to the emergence of new processes of meaning-creation in the spiritual growth and individuation of priests.

Abstract:
This study aims at exposing and challenging the effects of heterosexist assumptions that are prevalent in institutions of higher learning. It (study) further seeks to highlight and address the gaps that exist within the academic literature in South Africa with regards to homosexuality. Five students from an institution of higher learning in the Western Cape Province of South Africa with predominantly Black Students were used for this study. All the participants were Black students aged between 19 and 25 years who openly identify themselves as lesbians. Their participation was voluntary. A narrative approach was utilised as an attempt to afford the participants an opportunity to narrate their histories and personal experiences. This is a qualitative research approach which deals with personal stories that are told to describe human action and make sense of events that surround an individual. It involves getting a story from an individual who is identified as having some knowledge or experience with the topic of study. In an attempt to gain a better understanding and an insightful perspective into the personal narratives that were shared by the participants of this study, all their experiences will be put under the control of the thematic analysis.

Wolff, Kathleen. "The Lived Experience of Remorse Among Male, Adolescent Offenders: A Phenomenological Inquiry." Diss., University of Hawaii at Manoa, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10125/22073.

Full text
Abstract:
Remorse continues to play an important role in the legal system and in offender rehabilitation; yet, it remains an understudied concept. Research related to remorse at the phenomenological level is sparse and studies that focus on youthful offenders are nearly non-existent. The purpose of this study was to describe the essence of the lived experience of male, adolescent offenders, who have experienced the phenomenon of remorse in the context of their crimes. Colaizzi‟s descriptive, phenomenological approach to inquiry and analysis guided this qualitative study. Narratives from in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 13 male, African American and European American, ages 16-18 year-old offenders placed in privately owned Residential Treatment Programs served as data. Eight clusters of themes and 18 themes emerged from the data and provided rich descriptions of the remorse experience among this population. Findings supported the positive and negative aspects of remorse noted in the literature. Implications for future nursing research, nursing practice, and policy were provided.

Abstract:
Within the male reproductive system, oxidative stress (OS) has been identified as prevailing etiology of male infertility. The effects of reactive oxygen species (ROS) on male fertility depend on the dimensions, “modus operandi” of the ROS and the oxido-reduction potential (ORP) of the male reproductive tract. Hereupon, for an adequate response to OS, the cells of our body are endowed with a well-sophisticated system of defense in order to be protected. Various antioxidant enzymes and small molecular free radical scavengers, maintain the delicate balance between oxidants and reductants (antioxidants), crucial to cellular function and fertility. Therapeutic use of antioxidants is an optimal and coherent option in terms of mitigating OS and improving semen parameters. Therefore, recognizing and managing OS through either decreasing ROS levels or by increasing antioxidant force, appear to be a requesting approach in the management of male infertility. However, a clear defined attitude of the experts about the clinical efficacy of antioxidant therapy is still deprived. Prominently, antioxidant such as coenzyme Q10, vitamin C and E, lycopene, carnitine, zinc and selenium have been found useful in controlling the balance between ROS production and scavenging activities. In spite of that, healthy lifestyle, without smoke and alcohol, everyday exercise, reduction of psychological stress and quality well-designed meals, are habits that can overturn male infertility.

Abstract:
This chapter examines how the social history of urbanization influenced the emergence of sexual science by focusing on the case of male homosexuality and female prostitution during the period 1850–1950. It first considers the notions of sexual chaos and order that emerged within nineteenth-century anthropology and how they were related to urbanization, with an emphasis on the case of Buenos Aires. It then discusses some aspects of the global history of transportation and urbanization and how it affected prostitution and homosexuality in different parts of the world. It also explores the simultaneous emergence and similarity of the so-called cities of sin and how they became incubators of a sexual science in which the evolution or devolution of human society was debated in sexual terms and described as a fact of daily life. The chapter suggests that “civilization encourages prostitution” as the sexual drive is increasingly put under control.

This chapter considers the careers of women more generally, not just of those in the computer game industry. The chapter considers ways forward and how the workplace can be improved to help women’s careers. This includes identifying career factors and considering a number of psychological constructs, such as stereotypes and solo status. It considers the position of women in senior management and leadership positions, explores how women are disadvantaged in the workforce, and provides the reader with an understanding of the issue of time and how this impacts the careers of women due to the long hours culture associates with many careers, especially male-dominated careers. Finally, the chapter looks at how organisational practices can support women in the workforce.

Abstract:
Annotation. This article highlights the issues of workers’ industrial medical rehabilitation, one of the leading professions of railway transport who had already had COVID 19. There is a main aspect is the data of the studies carried out for the period 2020-2021 there on the basis of the Center for Restorative Medicine and Rehabilitation of the Private Healthcare Institution KB "Russian Railways-Medicine" Yekaterinburg and the Clinical Hospital of the ChUZ of Perm together with the Department of Faculty Therapy No. 2 of Occupational Pathology and Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics of PSMU im. Wagner. Proceeding from the fact that the institutions of Russian Railways-Medicine are the main link in maintaining the health of the transport system of JSC Russian Railways employees. Methods: On the basis of the rehabilitation department in Yekaterinburg, express questionnaires about quality of life were developed and implemented for JSC Russian Railways employees after this disease. The questionnaires included a subjective assessment of the physiological, psychological, and emotional state of Russian Railways employees (able-bodied) who had recovered in the near future and those who had not more than six months after the illness. The total number of people who have recovered since the beginning of the pandemic is about 4,000. The questionnaires received on feedback from 761 people were processed. In the structure of the interviewed by gender: male - 47%, female - 53%, respondents who have had mild and moderate forms of a new coronavirus infection (COVID-19). In the research and analysis of the material obtained, the criteria for selection for rehabilitation were identified, taking into account age and gender status, as well as the need for rehabilitation measures. The obtained data were compared with the research data of the Department of Faculty Therapy No. 2, Occupational Pathology and Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics of the Vagner State Medical Academy, Perm. Results: The study results are used in the development of rehabilitation programs and are also aimed at reducing industrial risks and hazards arising in the railway transport when performing functions by employees of locomotive crews who returned to production activities in the early period after this infection. Since, in combination with postcovid symptoms, the influence of production factors, the “specificity of the human factor”, can lead to serious consequences, both in health and in the performance of their labor duties on the infrastructure of railway transport, which is an increased danger zone. We have found that rehabilitation measures must be carried out for all employees of Russian Railways who have been ill, regardless of gender, age and degree of lung damage. In our opinion, an important marker for the understanding of functional disorders in postcoid symptomatology is the neutropicity of the virus, its penetration and damage to the limbic system, those important departments responsible for the regulation of general changes in brain activation that affect the integrity of functioning.

Abstract:
One of the most pressing issues in contemporary psychology is the study and analysis of the reflective aspects of the performance of police officers. This article deals with the theoretical and empirical aspects of psychological cognition of the stated topic regarding the example of future officers of investigative units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia. Different approaches to understanding occupational reflections were listed. Within the scope of this study, the authors share the view that occupational reflection is one of the structural components of the I-concept of an investigative officer. To comprehensively study the stated topic, the auhors addressed the types of problems faced by an investigative officer, and defined the contribution of occupational reflection to the proper fulfillment of duties. The aim of the study is to empirically identify the revelation of features of parameters of occupational reflection of police officers. The author summarises the results of an empirical study in a sample of students in an educational organisation of the Russian Mi nistry of Internal Affairs system. The occupational reflection technique (V.D. Shadrikov, S.S. Kurginyan) was employed. Mann-Whitney non-parametric U-test methods were used to process the results and analyse them statistically, using SPSS for Windows v.19. Male fifth-year students have been proven to lack the skills responsible for defining motives and objectives of professional activity. The range of significance of the overall level of reflexivity in both groups falls short of the norm. The results of the research will be used for the development of the author’s programme for the development of police officers’ performance reflection as well as for the comprehensive study of the image of the profession in the structure of the I-concept of the investigators of the Russian MIA system.
