Abstract:
Theoretically the adolescent psychological development is a transition period which is marked by changes in biological, psychological and social aspects. Empirically, the increasing trend of juvenile delinquency is caused by the inability of the early adolescents to be assertive so that their personality become weak and they can easily fall into negative things. This study aimed at determining the extent to which environment and mass media have the influence on assertive behaviour and juvenile delinquency trend in Junior High School in West Java Province. The respondents of this research were 458 students of Junior High Schools in West Java. Questionnaire was used to collect the data. Samples were chosen by using stratified random sampling technique. Data analysis employed Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) with two-stages testing: measurement model and structural model, using Analysis of Moment Structure (AMOS). The results of this study revealed that all hypothetical statements have significant effects. The findings showed that the increasing level of students’ assertive behaviour can decrease the tendency of juvenile delinquency in them. Abstract:
Islamic vision of education is to promote the formation of a noble character of students. In fact, it has not been fully achieved. As evidenced by the mass media that include many adolescents who engage in premarital sex. Beyond the researchers conducted a preliminary study in CIS Elementary School Cirebon. The result is there are still many elementary school fourth graders CIS obligation unworked prayers. It is closely related to a noble character against God. One cause of the lack of success of Islamic Education in schools for vision is the problem of learning methods are monotonous and not touching the psychological aspects of students. As one alternative in solving these problems is the presence of a method that can instill high moral values in students. Quran story method is considered effective in instilling noble moral values to students. Methods story Qur'an have characteristics that are different from other methods. This study aims to determine whether the method Qur'an story has a significant influence on the development of a noble character. Taken population Elementary School fourth grade students of the CIS, with a cluster sampling technique that is in class IV Roudhoh and class IV Multazam. The design was experimental design really. There are two classes, namely the control class and experimental class. Grade control using conventional methods, while the experimental group was treated using the method Qur`an story. Do pretest and posttest for both classes to assess the noble character of students. The hypothesis is that the Quran story method significantly influences the development of the noble character of students. Tests conducted by the independent samples t-test to compute t and t see table at the significance level of 0.05 with NU = 26. The result t is greater than t table (2.18> 1.71). This indicates that the hypothesis is accepted. Thus, the method Qur`an story significant influence on the development of a noble character of students.

Objetivo: Analizar la Calidad de Vida en el Trabajo (CVT) de enfermeras en hospitales públicos. Método: Estudio cuantitativo descriptivo transversal, realizado en dos hospitales públicos ubicados en la ciudad de Maceió / AL, de febrero a abril de 2020, donde 78 enfermeros respondieron dos cuestionarios auto-cumplimentados, el primero de ellos sociodemográfico y otro cuestionario estructurado relacionado con la evaluación CVT (TQWL-42). Los datos se analizaron mediante estadística descriptiva. Resultados: Predominó el sexo femenino (93,6%), carga total de trabajo de 60 horas o más (56,4%), turnos de mañana, tarde y noche (41%), tipo de contrato público (74,4%), el aspecto de significación de la tarea tuvo un promedio positivo (4,34) y el aspecto de servicios de salud y asistencia social tuvo un promedio negativo (2,35). El ámbito psicológico / conductual predominó con una media de (3,69) y, según la representación gráfica de la muestra según el TQWL-42, el aspecto de significación de la tarea obtuvo un resultado satisfactorio (83,49). Conclusiones: El CVT de los enfermeros fue evaluado como ni positivo ni negativo, requiriendo la ampliación de nuevos estudios sobre la importancia de los aspectos, para resolver los problemas en cuestión. Objective: To analyze the Quality of Life at Work (QWL) of nurses in public hospitals. Method: Quantitative descriptive cross-sectional study, carried out in public hospitals located in the city of Maceió / AL, from February to April 2020, from where 78 nurses answered the self-fulfilled questionnaires, the first sociodemographic and other structured questionnaire related to it evaluation QLW (TQWL-42). The data were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics. Results: Female sex predominated (93.6%), total workload of 60 hours or more (56.4%), working hours, afternoon and night (41%), type of public contract (74.4%), the aspect of significance of the positive attitude (4.34) and the aspect of health services and social assistance as negative (2.35). The psychological / behavioral scope predominated with a mean of (3.69) and, according to the graphical representation of the subject according to the TQWL-42, the aspect of significance of the task obtained a satisfactory result (83.49). Conclusion: The QLT of the sick was evaluated as positive in negative, requiring the expansion of new studies on the importance of aspects, to solve the problems in question. Objetivo: Analisar a Qualidade de Vida no Trabalho (QVT) dos enfermeiros de instituições hospitalares da rede pública. Método: Estudo quantitativo descritivo de corte transversal, realizado em dois hospitais públicos localizados no município de Maceió/AL, no período de fevereiro a abril de 2020, onde 78 enfermeiros responderam dois questionários de autopreenchimento, sendo o primeiro um questionário sociodemográfico e outro questionário estruturado relacionados à avaliação da QVT (TQWL-42). Os dados foram analisados por meio de estatística descritiva. Resultados: Predominou o sexo feminino (93,6%), carga horária total de 60h ou mais (56,4%), turnos de trabalho matutino, vespertino e noturno (41%), tipo de contrato concursado (74,4%), o aspecto significância da tarefa apresentou média positiva (4,34) e o aspecto serviço de saúde e assistência social apresentou média negativa (2,35). Prevaleceu a esfera psicológico/comportamental com a média de (3,69) e, segundo a representação gráfica da amostra de acordo com o TQWL-42, o aspecto significância da tarefa obteve resultado satisfatório (83,49). Conclusão: A QVT dos enfermeiros foi avaliada como nem positiva, nem negativa, sendo necessário a ampliação de novos estudos sobre a importância dos aspectos, a fim de solucionar as problemáticas em questão.

Abstract:
Virus is a borderline between living and non-living things, not capable of reproduction but only do this process utilizing the machineries of a living cell. For most ordinary people in the Philippines, the corona virus that caused Corona Virus Disease in December 2019 (COVID 19) was not of big importance. The Philippine government was just observing the usual measure such as installing thermal screening in the airports to detect arriving passengers with flu. The virus continued to spread to the whole world. The continuous spread of the virus is the reason why mass media in print, in television, and other forms were used to educate people on how to prevent the spread of the virus. The Philippines positive cases were increasing almost exponentially. The Philippines government was getting more serious on the corona virus problem. President Rodrigo Duterte announced in the evening of March 12, 2020 of the month-long lock down of the whole Metro Manila from March 15 to April 14, 2020 as the country looks forward to contain the COVID 19. Land, domestic air and domestic sea to and from Metro Manila were suspended within the period. Social and religious activities that involved mass gathering were banned. Conferences, seminars and like activities were postponed and people were advised to stay at home. The lock down has brought about both negative and positive things to the government and to the people which can be observed commonly in every place. The negative things could fall into economic, social and psychological aspects. If corona virus brings negative and undesirable things in the community and in the Philippines, there are also positive things that sprouted. It is true indeed that a misfortune or a disaster to a place or persons can be an opportunity to others. Lots of things which are favorable and beneficial to many people and to the nature during the lock down which include economic, social and ecological aspects. The current situation brought by the corona virus that resulted to lock down implemented by the government of the Philippines gives an opportunity to learn the value of compassion and empathy in times of crisis. COVID 19 is bad, but people can also see the good effect of it. In the Philippines, people always boost the morale of our fellow Filipinos to unite in this battle to overcome this crisis and “together, we heal as one”.

Abstract:
Background:Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a chronic inflammatory condition in which a delayed diagnosis will have health impacts including physical and psychological aspects. Thus, identification of risk factors and early diagnosis are crucial in clinical practice. In Malaysia, 13.7% of patients with underlying psoriasis develop PsA 1. However, there are limited data on the risk factors in developing PsA in these patients, not just in Malaysia but also in the Southeast Asia region.Objectives:To analyse sex, clinical features, comorbidities in patients with psoriasis and PsA, and the predictive factors of developing PsA in patients with underlying psoriasis.Methods:A retrospective study was carried out involving patients with a physician-verified diagnosis of psoriasis who were attending the dermatology and/or rheumatology clinics at the University of Malaya Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur between 2015 to 2020. Data were retrieved from electronic medical records. Data collected included sex, age, body mass index (BMI), duration of psoriasis, socio-demographics, comorbidities, body area affected, severity of skin involvement, presence of nail involvement and systemic therapy used in treating psoriasis. Systemic therapy is defined as methotrexate, sulfasalazine and/or acitretin used before diagnosis of PsA. Patients with psoriasis who developed PsA had information collected on tender joint count, swollen joint count and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) at their initial visit to the rheumatologist. Logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the possible risk factors of developing PsA.Results:A total of 330 psoriasis patients which included 54.5% male and a mean age of 53 (standard deviation, SD 18.85) years were included. Eighty-three (25.0%) patients were diagnosed with PsA. Among patients with PsA, 39.8% were males with a mean age of 54 (SD 15.79) years. Majority of the PsA patients were ethnic Malay (45.8%), followed by 28.9% Chinese and 25.3% Indian. The median duration of developing PsA was at 36 (IQR 3.5 - 114) months after the diagnosis of psoriasis. 12.3% presented with active polyarthritis at the initial diagnosis of PsA. There was a significant difference in the use of systemic therapy in females, in which there was a higher rate of systemic therapy used in female PsA patients prior to developing PsA as compared to females with psoriasis who did not develop PsA (n=24, 48% vs n=16, 16%; p < 0.001). There was no significant association between ethnicity, education level, comorbidities, BMI, body area affected and family history of psoriasis with development of PsA. The predictive factors in developing PsA are females (OR = 3.14, 95% CI 1.77,5.58), presence of nail involvement (OR = 3.72, 95% CI 1.91,7.26) and the use of systemic therapy (OR = 3.04, 95% CI 1.70,5.43), (all p values <0.001).Conclusion:This study highlighted that female sex, presence of nail involvement and use of systemic therapy prior to PsA diagnosis are predictive risk factors in developing PsA among patients with underlying psoriasis. Abstract:
This article deals with media coverage of destructive deviant behavior, particularly, suicides and drug addiction. Presentation of deviant behavior by the media is closely linked to romanticization of crime in the contemporary mass culture, which is a dangerous phenomenon for the society. Mass media products that tell about deviant behavior have a strong psychological impact since criminal romanticism is so widespread in mass culture that criminal and deviant behavior is sometimes presented as a role model. The author studies legal and ethical aspects of media coverage of deviant behavior, gives an analytical review of legal rules and recommendations for journalists on how to cover cases of suicide or drug abuse. The latter have been worked out by either regulatory agencies or authorities interested in this process. Moreover, one cannot find such rules or recommendations either in the Code of Professional Ethics of Russian Journalists or in the draft of the Standard of Media Ethic developed by the Public Panel for Complaints about the Press of Russian Union of Journalists. The article describes compositional, lexical and stylistic means of romanticizing deviant behavior, and analyzes coverage of suicides and drug abuse by the example of media content of Russian popular newspapers Rossiyskaya Gazeta and Komsomolskaya Pravda. The most common means include an eye-catching title, shifting the focus from the case of deviant behavior to the agent’s outstanding personality traits, the author’s affective evaluation of the case, evocative lexicon, and quotes or reminiscences that justify or approve of the deviant behavior. The author infers that the means of romanticising deviance by the mass media correlate with the techniques which regulatory agencies and experts recommend journalists to avoid. Therefore, the usage of these means may be considered a bad violation of journalists’ professional ethic.

Abstract Introduction.The main purpose of advertising certain products or services is to attract customer attention and analyze the impact of advertising on customer behavior. Various studies show that there are significant links between cognitive and psychological aspects. The cognitive effect of an advertisement begins with the influence of the visual aspects of the advertisement. This research was aimed to explore the role of product advertising on consumer buying interest by studying aspects of psychology. Methods. The study design was observational analytic study that seek to see the relationship between exposure to milk mass forming muscle mass and consumer buying interest. The exploration dimensions for advertising exposure are ad frequency, ad duration and ad intensity using questionnaire. Total samples in this study were 60 people, age ranges from 18-35 years and male sex. Results. This study found as many as 70% of respondents understood the message delivered by the milk advertisement. As many as 56.7% of respondents expressed an interest in buying these muscle-building milk products. Around 58% of respondents stated their willingness to promote the product to others. Conclusion. This research shows the role of advertising in shaping consumer behavior and buying interest. The more attractive and the more often the ad is displayed it will trigger aspects of attractiveness and confidence in the product. Along with the need, further reinforce the behavior to buy products.

This qualitative study describes the lived experience of physicians who work in communities that have experienced a public mass shooting. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seventeen physicians involved in eight separate mass casualty shooting incidents in the United States. Four major themes emerged from constant comparative analysis: (1) The psychological toll on physicians: “I wonder if I'm broken”; (2) the importance of and need for mass casualty shooting preparedness: “[We need to] recognize this as a public health concern and train physicians to manage it”; (3) massive media attention: “The media onslaught was unbelievable”; and (4) commitment to advocacy for a public health approach to firearm violence: “I want to do whatever I can to prevent some of these terrible events.”

Objective. This research aims at defining the principles of constructing effective narratives with the use of the strategic communication capabilities and the media. Materials and Methods. Publications in modern English and Ukrainian mass-media have been analyzed using methods and techniques of discourse analysis, content- and intent-analysis with elements of pragmatic and narrative analysis. The author’s methodology included the following: to identify the author’s intention and motives, the main topoi and points of the narrative focalization, to define hidden beliefs, social and psychological basis for the recipient’s perception of the narrative, to outline effective strategies for the narrative construction and dissemination in the media. Results. In general, modern media have the capacity of constructing the desired frames in the audience’s consciousness by creating a mental model of the situation, on which the consumer of the information starts to rely. Decision-making now is reliant on the media consciousness, a virtual world imposed by the media and constructed with the help of relevant narratives. Modern strategic narratives usually have the external focalization which gets more credibility when supported and presented by the focalization points of celebrities and experts. Competing narratives, as well as the plurality of possible interpretations of events, are destroyed with the help of the media, which begin to broadcast one interpretation of the event that matches the narrative, by this making it the truth. Simultaneous use of several different media intensifies the influence and support the narrative. Repeating information changes its status and makes it not just a fact, but general knowledge. Any narrative is not only a sequential story of the selected events, but also persuasion in its nature. Persuasion is enhanced when narratives resonate with the audience's value system. Conclusions. As a strategic communication tool, an effective narrative is constructed with regard to all the aspects of communication, psycholinguistic and social aspects being especially important. Further insights into the problem of shaping narratives will allow outlining best practices and their elements to develop image-forming narratives.

Abstract:
Online video media share a great part of similar attributes with traditional mass media. They also bear some fresh features of Web 2.0, such as integration, interactivity, both synchrony and asynchrony, which break the traditional pattern of media viewing and using. They allow for new forms of user activities and offer the user a participatory experience/role so as to facilitate the evolution and dynamic reintegration of the networked society as well as the whole social environment. Online video media have therefore been drawing lots of attention from both the industry and academic field since the emergence. The aims of this research are to: 1) investigate uses and gratifications theorizations in the era of Web 2.0, with online video media the typical target, by finding out the wide and coherent spectrum of online video media usage motivations and gratifications; 2) construct a comprehensive framework of online video media uses and gratifications from integrated and interdisciplinary perspectives; 3) verify the interactive relationships between or among the variables presented in the framework. Survey is adopted for data collection in this study. Convenient sampling and snowball sampling are used. A total of 470 respondents in mainland China complete the questionnaire online, in which 462 are online video media users and the rest 8 are non-users. The online video media uses and gratifications items are then subject to principal components factoring with varimax rotation. Seven factors are identified to explain 67.31% of the variance. Results indicate that the nature of device is a potential source of resulting in unique media outcomes, and habitual behavior of mobile video use has become a part of netizens’ life. More importantly, significant differences in both motivation and gratification between the two user identities are found. Besides, different genres of media contents are related to different motivations and gratifications, and may predict different degrees of interactivity. Moreover, results show that, people in different types of emotions (positive and non-positive) tend to arouse different motivations and attempt to seek different gratifications. Investigation also detect the relationships among dependency, activities after use and attitudes during the motivation and gratification process. It is concluded that, online video media usage is a spiral feedback process of dependency, activities after use and attitudes. During the process of motivation and gratification, people gain experience and derived perceptions, and the beliefs/loyalty gradually forms. Online video media usage is an interactive and dynamic process. During the process, user interacts with the media as well as with other users in the networked society. Though media culture, media literacy and social participation are still weak and limited in the domestic networked society, online video media user exhibits more active, intentional and conscious actions, which is distinguished from traditional mass media audience. In general, this study contributes to the understanding of user’s behaviors, needs and the effects of the new media.

This thesis examined if a combination of variables would yield a higher recall for printed news than previously recorded. Some subjects, after reading a printed news story were exposed to rehearsal (a discussion), a cue (aided recall), a combination of both, and neither variable. It was hypothesized that subjects exposed to a combination of rehearsal an a cue would record the highest net recall, or hypermnesia effect, over subsequent testing and that subjects exposed to either one would record higher net recall than those exposed to neither variable.Subjects exposed to rehearsal and/or a cue did not record a higher net recall, gross recall, or correctly recalled details for the printed news story than those who were not exposed. However, rehearsal and a cue were found to have a significant effect on the amount of errors made by subjects: those exposed to a cue made significantly less errors on the recall test. Suggestions for future research include increasing rehearsal time and using a stronger episodic cue than employed in this study.

The aim of the study was to explore the psychological profiles of perpetrators of domestic violence as represented in newspaper articles. An archival research approach was chosen as the appropriate design for the present study. The researcher accessed and studied all newspaper articles from two daily newspapers reporting on domestic violence over a two-year period (that is, from January 2011 up to December 2012). A total of 98 newspaper articles (sixty from the Sowetan newspaper, and 38 thirty eight from the Daily Sun newspaper) covering the period under review were retrieved. The data was captured on a self-developed data record sheet. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyse the data. The results were analysed and presented using frequency tables, descriptive statistics and cross-tabulations. The results of the study showed that the majority of the victims of domestic violence were women with little education and skills. Assault, attempted murder and murder were found to be the forms of violence perpetrated against the victims. The majority of the perpetrators (70.4%) were males, with higher education and skills. Some of the perpetrators were represented in the newspaper articles as being emotionally troubled (69.4%), passively aggressive (11.2%), mentally disturbed (5.1%) and socially deviant (3.1%). The majority of the mental health problems that were associated with the perpetrators of domestic violence included depression, borderline personality and acute psychosis. A number of triggers were found to lead to domestic violence. These included family arguments, jealousy, substance abuse, and criminal behaviour. Based on the above results, the study is concluded by recommending anger and stress management as some of the programmes that the government could introduce to minimise domestic violence.

The study adopts Uses and Gratifications (U&G) theory as the framework to test antecedents and consequences in using fanqiang (bypassing Internet censorship) as an alternative medium along with accessible Internet, TV, newspaper and radio as mainstream media in a Chinese context. By online between-group experimentation (N = 132 in the experimental group, N = 127 in the control group), the study shows that curiosity about forbidden political content and political apathy predict fanqiang and most accessible media use tendencies. Moderation effects exist between curiosity and self-efficacy in predicting fanqiang tendencies. Disappointment as an emotional effect is directly related to curiosity and political apathy, where the mediation effects of media use tendencies are not salient. Explicit Internet censorship increases curiosity about forbidden political content and decreases the dimension of lack of interest in political apathy. However, it does not change accessible media use tendencies and disappointment levels. Still, participants show fewer of fanqiang tendencies than with accessible media, except radio. The results highlight the cognitive roots of motivations and emotional constructs as a part of gratification in U&G research, that self-efficacy as a necessary requirement for curiosity to drive media use, and that information attributes can change motivations. We urge future scholars to build broader explications of political apathy when applied to different societies, to try diverse methods like experimentation in U&G research, and to adopt a sociopsychological approach when studying the influences and effectiveness of Internet censorship.

Two hundred and fifty-three subjects were used in an experiment to try to determine how differences in news media presentations affect the reader's view of terrorism. Two stories about a terrorist attack were used, one describing a bombing, the other a hijacking. Both stories had two versions using no one injured or eight innocent people injured. One group of subjects was given no additional information about terrorism. The second group was given information after the description that emphasized the salience of terrorism. The third group received information that de-emphasized the seriousness of terrorism. Subjects were also given a questionnaire designed to measure authoritarianism and one to measure conservatism. It was found that subjects scoring high on authoritarianism or conservativism favored more severe punishment for terrorists than did those scoring lower on the two scales. Findings did not support the hypothesis that providing people with information about terrorism could lessen the impact of terrorist events.

Previous studies on celebrity endorsement have focused on merits of the celebrity endorser as the key factors for predicting endorsement effectiveness. This research extends previous research by exploring the effects of the consumer's para-social interaction (PSI) with the celebrity. Based on the Source Credibility Model, the proposed model takes PSI as the core variable and examines its relationship with self-brand connection and ideal congruency. Two studies were conducted using online questionnaires to collect consumers' self-reported data. Study 1 tested a partial model using sports celebrities. Study 2 tested the full model using entertainment celebrities. Study 1 had 605 respondents and study 2 had 387 respondents. The respondents were young, well-educated and included both fans and no-fans of the selected celebrities. The results showed that consumer-celebrity PSI was an essential factor in the endorsement process. The perceived attractiveness of a celebrity was an antecedent to PSI, which in turn allowed the consumer to establish a personal connection with the endorsed brand and resulted in positive brand attitude. Furthermore, the results showed that consumers tend to have stronger PSI with a celebrity when they hold a higher degree of ideal congruity with the celebrity. Finally, results indicated that the context in which the celebrity was shown with the brand had significant effects, with a real-life context yielding stronger effects than an ad endorsement context or a product placement context. In sum, this research extended the source attractiveness model by clarifying the endorsement process to include consumer-celebrity PSI and brand-related responses. It also contributed to the audience-celebrity PSI theory. In addition, this research revealed the potential impact of celebrity-brand associations in real-life contexts on endorsement effectiveness, thus providing new insights for research related to the various forms of celebrity endorsement.

The media, which help define what we think and our roles in the society, have a crucial role to project both men and women’s issues so as to change people’s perceptions and stereotypes about the role men and women play in the society. There is need, therefore, to ensure gender equality in the operations of the media so that issues to do with both men and women get adequate and equal coverage. This study on the reportage of the land redistribution exercise in Zimbabwe has, however, exposed the gendered nature of the operations of the media, particularly in the news production process. It provides that, overally, the news discourse is a masculine narrative whose androcentric form is a result of, and is protected by, claims to ‘objectivity,’ ‘professionalism’, ‘impartiality’ and the pursuit of a journalistic routine system that hegemonically prioritises men’s issues over those of women. The situation, as the research shows, has not been helped by journalists’ incapacity to do thematic appreciation of issues and their over-inclination towards a simplistic event-based journalism that fails to question policies as they are enacted and implemented in gender-skewed processes. The lack of gender policies, the operations of patriarchy and the pursuit of a journalistic routine system that sees nothing wrong with the ostracisation of women issues are very fundamental findings that the research uses in its attempts to explain why the gender equality discourse was left out of the news reports about the land reform exercise in Zimbabwe.

Television has become the primary 'story teller' in our society today (Gerbner, et.al., 1986, 1994). It is an all pervasive technology that most of us aren't even aware of in our surroundings. From airports, bus terminals, restaurants, bars to our own lounges, television is constantly passing on its message to its audience. Its role might vary from just a background noise to active information source, its presence remains constant. However television itself is not static, it is a dynamic medium with a constantly growing presence in our lives. Therefore, there remains a constant need to understand the role television plays in shaping our 'stories' and the current study is a short step towards understanding the role and impact of news media on the emotional responses of news viewers in Pakistan. During the last decade there has been an exponential growth in Pakistan's private media industry. Over 80 channels have already started with a number in the pipeline. Of these channels the most prominent are the 16 24-hour news channels which, for the first time, provided the Pakistani public multiple options for seeking news and information (previously only Pakistan Television, a state owned channel was available) - the Pakistani public is now spoiled for choice. However this growth in the media industry also resulted in the over-exposure of issues as the channels vied for viewers. Consequently the audience is regularly exposed to sensational news and content - with coverage ranging from the graphic to the mundane - as networks compete for ratings. Observing the media's behavior and keeping media effects research on exposure to violence in mind, the researcher was interested in seeing whether regular exposure to violence news and violent acts leads to desensitization of the audience. The relationship between news and sensationalism is an old one, starting from the early tabloids in the early 1900s which focused on crime/violence to attract readers. The same trend can be seen in news channels in Pakistan and abroad. One main reason can be the low cost of covering and reporting a crime or act of violence. The event itself provides the reporter with images and information (no digging required!), the drama of the crisis, its aftermath and consequences provide news channels easy fodder for their news mill which needs to run 24-hours, 365 days of the year. Therefore the aim of the present research was twofold: one, to evaluate the amount of violence/violent content that is being shown on Pakistani news channels; and two, to try and assess the impact of this content on the emotional responses of news viewers. The study also aimed to extend the desensitization hypothesis by arguing that the continued presence of the stimulus responsible for desensitization will result in audiences' crossing the attention threshold; i.e. viewers will ignore the central issues on the media agenda and remove it from their socio-political discussions. The model further suggested that viewers will focus more on the peripheral issues rather than the primary issues in the media agenda. The results of the content analysis clearly show that in both public and private television news violent content is the 2nd highest type of news being reported (with domestic politics being the highest type of news content across both channels). Two types of news on violence were studied: violence resulting in fatalities and violence without fatalities; with the first one have almost twice the volume of the latter type of news content. The content analysis and the first part of the survey analysis provide the pre-requisite information for the attention threshold assumption. One, they confirm the continuous presence of a particular issue in news in large volume; and secondly, the survey analysis provides support for the presence of desensitization amongst the respondents. The tests run for the attention threshold assumption indicated that despite the presence of the issue of violence on the media agenda, it is no longer on the public agenda, and is not a part of the social discourse of the respondents with either their family or their friends. The current research shows that heavy consumers of violent news content tend to significantly have pro-violence attitudes. They also tend to have lower levels of emotional empathy for victims of violence and higher levels of compassion fatigue. While these results were not statistically significant for the sample tested, the results show a consistently low mean, indicating negative trend for both the variables. The respondents were generally in favor of harsher punishments and greater state/military control of the country. Results of the current study indicate that heavy viewers of news media tend to be more desensitized to the violence in society. Their emotional responses are numbed down. For a country like Pakistan, with a history of military intervention in domestic politics and governance, this is a matter of grave concern. Strong feelings of insecurity and mean world syndrome, fed on a steady diet of violent news programing, can further undermine faith in the political system - leading to greater acceptance (and at times active desire) of military sponsored or led control - a situation that is very troubling for Pakistan. While the current analysis is a starting place, news content in Pakistan needs to be studied in greater depth. Future research needs to also focus on the wider range of news channels in Pakistan. This would help identify the effects of different variables like ownership, political affiliations, language and location on the content of news channels. In terms of the survey itself, a broader, more inclusive research in the rural and semi-urban areas of the country would provide better evidence of the effects of news violence on Pakistanis. And finally, a lot more in-depth and extensive research is needed before on the "attention threshold" model for it to be verified and its results generalized. If verified, the model will help future researchers identify why issues of audience concern are no longer getting the requisite attention from viewers, despite having strong media presence.

The second part of the monograph “Mass Media as a Mediator of Com­municative-Cultural Memory” considers a complex integrative psychological phenomenon of journalist’s professional identity based on system analysis. It is shown that on the one hand, personal identity accompanies a person’s notions of group/professional affiliation, and in this sense is a necessary element of social identity, and on the other hand, based on the survey results of 261 respondents the authors noted the fact that an individual, even in a democratic state, often has problems in reality caused by the desire to preserve the right to creative individuality and personal freedom. In accordance with the methodology of the study, the whole set of commu­nicative practices, which in the digital age were most widespread in the mass media, was analyzed. It is argued that the trends of development in the XXI century journalism as a convergent and multimedia characterized a gradual transition not only to the use of emerging technological opportunities but also to work within a fundamentally new philosophy of organizing creative activity. The process of identification as some consecutive stages is considered in the context of formation and development based on actual media practice of a pro­fessional culture of journalists. The authors prove that this integrative concept reflects the essence and basic personal characteristics of its bearers: praxeological (professional skills and abilities), mental (ethical and moral and philosophical), as well as deontological intentions as a process of human awareness of not only the abilities or talent but also the adoption of internal corporate standards and values, as well as a constant desire to learn and actively improve mass media skills and abilities. This chapter builds on the material and technological transformations described in the previous chapter to discuss changing ideas about sexual representations. The chapter begins to directly talk about the desires of the implied masturbator. From the late Qing into the early twentieth century, mass media conquered the Chinese cultural world. Ambitious intellectuals at the turn of the twentieth century increasingly put their ideas onto a print market that was more open than ever before. The chapter analyses how literary professionalization remained a deviation from the orthodox path of officialdom. It also elaborates the five aspects of ideological change around sex and sexual representations at the turn of the twentieth century. Many of these ideological transformations were led by political and cultural reformers, including proponents of a “New Culture.” These self-declared iconoclasts argued for revising the boundaries of legitimacy around desire itself. Ultimately, the chapter introduces the downfall of Zhang Jingsheng, a leading member of the New Culture group. The chapter addresses how Zhang's open discussion of his personal desires made him vulnerable to becoming seen as no better than an implied masturbator.
