Abstract:
A postal survey of 222 patients receiving long-term antidepressants in a training general practice showed that the majority were GHQ-12 cases and 62% of respondents reported moderate or severe depressive symptoms on the BDI-13. Although these patients received significantly higher doses than those reporting few or no symptoms, only 40% were prescribed at least a therapeutic antidepressant dose. All patients reporting mild, moderate or severe depressive symptoms consulted their general practitioner significantly more frequently than those without symptoms and the content of these consultations

Fifteen elderly patients participated in a teleconsultation with an orthopaedic surgeon, which was then followed by a conventional, face-to-face consultation. The comparison between the surgeon's ratings for both types of consultation suggested that the telemedicine consultation was satisfactory in terms of the quality of image and sound, the clinical examination and general simplicity. The telemedicine consultations did not generate a need for any additional clinical investigations, although in two cases a face-to-face consultation was necessary to clarify clinical signs (shortening of a limb

Out of 1279 first-year undergraduates, two matched groups of students potentially vulnerable to psychological disturbance were identified. One was left to its own resources; the other was offered psychotherapeutic intervention, the effects of which were measured by the number of consultations with general practitioners, type of treatment and rate of withdrawal from university. Although the students in the intervention group had fewer consultations, lower General Health Questionnaire scores at follow-up, and fewer withdrew from university, due to the small numbers involved none of these differe

Until recently a widespread recommendation for clinicians was not to respond to the content of patients' delusions but to stress at an early time point that the patient has a mental illness (educating approach). An opposed recommendation is to validate the patients’ symptoms and normalize them (normalizing approach). This study used an experimental design to compare the impact of these two approaches on treatment motivation (TM). A cover story about a person who develops persecutory delusions was used to guide a sample of 81 healthy participants who served as analogue patients into imagining e
