Abstract:
This article uses panel data from 745 married women in the Detroit Metropolitan Area to examine the mental health effects of employment and parenting status changes. Contrary to popular belief, the transition to parenting is not directly related to increases in psychological distress. Changes in employment status, however, are. Women who significantly increase their labor force participation report lower levels of psychological distress over the study period, while women who significantly decrease their labor force participation report higher psychological distress. The effects of labor force changes on mental health are not all modified by parenting status or changes in parenting status. The transition to parenting and increased parenting responsibilities, however, are indirectly related to increased psychological distress insofar as they result in decreased labor force participation. The implications of these results are used to evaluate four competing perspectives on the relationship between roles, stress, and psychological functioning.

Abstract:
Police employees are exposed to a variety of complex, work-related stressors and are susceptible to experiencing reduced psychological wellbeing. To advance understanding of the personal and social factors underpinning psychological wellbeing in this population, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between psychological wellbeing, perceived support from colleagues, received support from colleagues and personality factors in police employees. A sample of 381 police employees from a county police force in England completed an online questionnaire assessing: psychological wellbeing; perceived support; received support; and personality factors. Psychological wellbeing was significantly and positively associated with perceived support from colleagues, received support from colleagues, extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability, and openness to experience. Further investigation of these relationships using multiple logistic regression analysis found that perceived support from colleagues, received support from colleagues, extraversion, and emotional stability significantly predicted psychological wellbeing. Given growing concerns about psychological wellbeing in police forces, the findings could help to inform the promotion of psychological wellbeing across operational and non-operational police employees. The results suggest that increasing both perceptions of available support and the amount of support received among employees in police forces is important for enhancing psychological wellbeing in this population. Furthermore, police employees with lower levels of extraversion and emotional stability should also be considered for additional support to promote psychological wellbeing.

Abstract:
Abstract U.S. Air Force Distributed Common Ground Station (DCGS) intelligence (Intel) operators sustain 24/7 battlefield situational awareness and facilitate precision-strike operations. DCGS operations are global, synergistic, Total Force (TF) endeavors by active duty, Air National Guard (ANG) and Reserve units, providing combatant commanders with critical real-time intelligence and shaping operational and tactical decisions. Continual surveillance of this community’s psychological health is important to its military leaders. This study re-examines the most frequently reported occupational stressors, as well as the prevalence of occupational burnout (i.e., high-emotional exhaustion and cynicism, and low professional efficacy), and psychological distress within this population. Active duty (n = 1717), ANG (n = 139), and Reserve (n = 173) Intel operators participated in a comprehensive, online, occupational health assessment. Results reveal that occupational stressors contributing to elevated rates of distress, regardless of TF status (i.e., low manning, long work hours, excessive workload, and organizational communication concerns) are consistent with previous research. The prevalence of high-emotional exhaustion (AD: 29%/ANG: 25%/RES: 14%) and psychological distress (AD: 19%/ANG: 17%/RES: 5%) are above estimates for other military communities. These findings combined with demographic and occupational risk factors lay the foundation for improving psychological health within this Total Force community.

Abstract:
Abstract Police officers must be able to make an accurate appraisal of a lethal encounter and respond with appropriate force to mitigate the threat to their own lives and to the lives of others. Contemporary police deadly force training places the cadet in mock lethal encounters, which are designed to simulate those occurring in the real lives of law enforcement officers. This Reality Base Training (RBT) is designed to provide cadets with experiences that require their reactions to be within the law, policies and procedures, and ethics while undergoing a very stressful, emotional, and physically dynamic situation (Artwohl & Christensen, 1997; Blum, 2000; Grossman, 1996; Miller, 2008; Murray, 2006). Three police cadets provided written accounts of their deadly force training experiences in the RBT format. The descriptive phenomenological psychological method was used to analyze the data and to synthesize a general psychological structure of their experiences. The results reveal the perceptions, thoughts, feelings and behaviors reflecting the role of consciousness and psychological subjectivity in the participants’ understandings and decision-making in the simulated situations.

Abstract:
For decades, elite athletes have used mental skills training to enhance their performance. The effectiveness of these skills and strategies have been measured, documented and supported in research (e.g., Feltz & Landers, 1983; Vealey, 1994). As the remarkable benefits of mental skills continue to reach an ever-growing community of performers, it is surprising that many military organizations, known for their high standards for performance and little tolerance for error, have yet to take full advantage of this type of training. Canada’s Air Force (CAF), home to a world-renowned pilot training program, now finds itself seeking additional tools to empower pilots to achieve consistent, high quality performance under demanding, high stress conditions. The purpose of this research was to explore the psychological skills used by elite Canadian military pilots to perform successfully in this highly demanding occupation. Sixteen in-depth interviews were conducted with elite Canadian pilots at a CAF base in Saskatchewan. Results indicated that pilots utilized all seven elements of Orlick’s (2008) Wheel of Excellence over three phases of flight: pre-flight preparation, mission execution, and post-flight debriefs. Pilots also drew on elements of the Wheel of Excellence during deployments to combat zones. Effective stress management played an especially important role in this context. Recommendations for future research include mental skills usage and preparation specific to deployment contexts as well as the implementation of a specific, relevant mental skills training program within the existing CAF pilot training program

Abstract:
1) A strain gauge device was developed to measure the forces exerted in two dimensions on the trumpet mouthpiece during performance. 2) A group of top professional performers (n = 30) and a group of intermediate players (n = 30:) were tested on a wide variety of musical material with mouthpiece force as the dependent variable. Data from the long note exercise in the normal register revealed significant effects for pitch and intensity on the dependent variable. No proficiency effects were observed. The scale and arpeggio exercises revealed a remarkable consistency in the application of mouthpiece force by all the subjects, such that force levels at each selected pitch/intensity combination appeared to be independent of context. The lip flexibility exercise however revealed significant, contextual influences, and it was suggested that musical complexity might be responsible for this. Some proficiency related effects were observed: the professional players had greater levels of maximum tolerable forces, displayed more endurance and were more consistent in the application of-mouthpiece force than the intermediate players across the range of tests. 3) An investigation was carried out on the assessments by trumpet players of the mouthpiece force usage of other players. The judgments involved rating photographs of players performing notes at known force levels. Groups of subjects differing in proficiency showed a high consensual agreement in judgments of mouthpiece force. However, equivalent proficiency groups rating the same photographs according to the criterion of apparent effort yielded almost identical rankings, suggesting that mouthpiece force judgments are made on the basis of this erroneous cue. The extent of consensual agreement and judgmental accuracy was found to be independent of proficiency level. 4) A psychophysical investigation of mouthpiece force using ratio production, magnitude production and magnitude estimation methods produced logarithmic sensory functions for both individual and group data. Judgmental accuracy was found to be unrelated to proficiency level.

Abstract:
The primary aim of this study was to examine the time course of change in muscle morphology and vertical jump performance in weightlifters preparing for a national competition. The secondary aim of this study is to examine how perceived recovery and stress state corresponds with alterations in training load leading up to competition. Eleven Olympic Training Site weightlifters completed a 4-week peaking phase for a national competition. Body mass, stress and recovery psychometric measures, and unloaded/loaded (20kg) squat jump height (SJH) were measured weekly and at the competition site. Vastus lateralis cross-sectional area (CSA), muscle thickness (MT) and pennation angle (PA) ultrasound measurements were taken prior to and following the training protocol. In competition, 6 athletes set a personal best in snatch, clean and jerk and/or total. These results suggest that improvements in the loaded SJ and psychometric measures correspond to successful competition performance in some weightlifters. Notably, most weightlifters appeared to be peaked within 3 days of competition.

Abstract:
Airmen serving in the U.S. Air Force have made significant contributions to the overall war efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Deployment, combat exposure, and subsequent combat-related mental health issues can have effects that extended beyond the airmen to the family. The primary aim of this study was to determine the path through which such effects occur within the context of risk and protective factors. The risk factors identified in this study were: deployment length and frequency and psychological symptomology. The construct of social support was also examined as an identified protective factor. This study examined the relationships between all of these variables using regression, moderation and mediation. Method: Secondary data were obtained from the Air Force Community Assessment, a large-scale, anonymous survey fielded in the spring of 2008 from a stratified random sample of active duty airmen. Results: Long and repeated deployments slightly increased the likelihood of the presence of both posttraumatic and depressive symptoms (.6% of variance explained in the variable deployment length and .5% in variable deployment frequency, p< .001). Furthermore, as psychological symptoms increase, there is a decrease in the quality of family relationships (7.2% of the variance explained in variable spousal relationships and 9.7% of the variance explained in the variable parent-child relationships, both statistically significant at p< .001). Social support was found to have a slightly moderating effect on the relationship between the deployment factors and both spousal and parent–child relationships (2.3% of the variance explained in both spousal and parent-child relationships, statistically significant at p< .001). Finally, this study examined the roll of psychological symptomology as a mediator between the variables deployment length/frequency and family relationships (spousal and parent-child). Findings demonstrate the strongest support for psychological symptomology (posttraumatic stress and depressive) as a mediator for the relationship between deployment length and spousal relationships. Findings were less conclusive and did not point toward mediation, for the relationship between deployment frequency and spousal relationships mediated by either type of psychological symptomology; i.e. posttraumatic stress of depressive. In addition, psychological symptomology did not mediate the relationship between both deployment length and frequency and parent-child relationships. This is, in part, a notable finding because “deployment frequency” has been a significant hallmark of the OIF and OEF conflicts; much emphasis has been placed on both deployment length and deployment frequency in the context of the current OIF and OEF war efforts. The current data demonstrate more implications for deployment length compared to frequency when predicting outcomes related to family relationships.

Abstract:
The sporting practices have a revelance relief when we talk about children and young people. Is unavoidable the importance of sport for development and balance growth (Bento, 1991; Sousa, 1988; Cratty, 1983). With this, it is noticeable that the psychological intervention in the family is the most basic aspects (Turnbull, 1986). The study here proposed want to analyze the relation of parenting styles with motivation in sport in young athletes beginners. Were collected in football school Dragon Force in Matosinhos, involving a sample of 150 children and young people between 6 and 14 years old of age, (M=5,35; DP=1,91) of both sexes. The objective of this study is to understand the relationship of the sporting activities have with the life of children and youth people. We interested particularly in testing if there is an association between the different parenting styles and motivation in children and if there is a negative association between these two areas. After informed consent, there are some people that answered a sociodemographic questionnaire (Ribeiro & Costa Lobo, 2013), another one about sport motivation scale (SMS) (Pelletier, 1995; adaptacion and validate by Bara Filho, 2011) and the parenting styles and dimensions questionnair (QEDP) (Robinson, Mandleco, Olsen & Hart, 2001). Equally important was a statistically significant positive correlation between the taste of sport and sex. And it was found that both boys and girls, compared to the practice of other sports, football is the sport that has more adhesion. Regarding the psychological facet of parenting styles with socioeconomic status have a significant correlation. That is, the parents of middle and high socio-economic status have a predominantly authoritative style and parents of low socioeconomic status have a predominantly authoritarian style. Were also found positive correlations between parenting practices and marital status, being parents who living in fact union are relatively more permissive who are married. The above results referred to facilitate the understanding of the relationship of parenting styles and motivation of sport among children and youth. In this study football is the sport that welcomes more appreciation.

Abstract:
This work is a critical assessment of the role of neuropsychiatry in the management of aerial warfare. Focussing almost exclusively on the Second World War (1939-45), the thesis demonstrates how the Royal Air Force (RAF) mobilised specialist medical knowledge to improve wastage and combat efficiency in flying personnel. Neurological and psychiatric expertise was enlisted to improve service performance and reduce the burden of neuropsychiatric disorders. To meet these key objectives, the RAF neuropsychiatric division undertook important administrative and therapeutic duties in the areas of personnel selection, service discipline, neuropsychiatric research, and the treatment of mental disorders. The work therefore assesses how the division responded to these challenges and contributed to the management of aerial warfare. The thesis assesses the factors that shaped the practice of neuropsychiatry in the service. Historically, the training and personal interests of specialists and the context of therapeutic practice guided the development of mental health specialties. To gain a fuller appreciation of the administrative and therapeutic duties of the division, this work explores the medical, social, military, and professional factors that shaped neuropsychiatric thought and practice. Secondly, the work engages with the 'human element' of aerial combat. The physical and mental health of aircrew was fundamental to the conduct of the air war and underpinned the administrative decisions of the air force. It was the primary objective of the neuropsychiatric division to preserve and develop these vital human resources. Neuropsychiatric disorders represented a challenge to efficiency, for they could affect the performance and motivation of a flyer. The thesis will examine how the neuropsychiatric division attempted to sustain aircrew by preventing and treating the disorders that compromised their efficiency.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines the effect that the introduction of an advanced manufacturing technology, specifically robotics, has on the work force of an aerospace defense company. In this endeavor, there are two main objectives. First, this study determines whether workers feel that their jobs are threatened by the introduction of robotic technology. Secondly, the research compares the degree to which workers from different labor types feel this threat. A review of the literature reveals that the technical factors involving manufacturing technology have been thoroughly examined and discussed, but the effect that they have on the work force has been somewhat neglected. This dissertation develops ten hypotheses to ascertain the perceived threat to job security for workers within an aerospace defense company. This study is based on an employee survey that examined the employee's perceived threat to job security by the introduction of robotics. The primary research was obtained from employees within an aerospace defense company through the use of questionnaires in a three phase approach. The first phase utilized a pretest that sampled the questionnaire prior to the company-wide solicitation. The second phase administered the questionnaire to the three labor types within the work force. Phase three consisted of data reduction and the comparison of the primary data to the research hypotheses. The results of the study concluded that workers closer to the robotic technology (hands-on employees) felt more threatened about their job security than workers more removed from the technology (support personnel and management). It was further found that the hands-on workers felt that the major factor that lead to the introduction of robots was the desire to lower labor costs while support personnel and managers felt that the major factor that lead to the introduction of robots was due to increasing productivity. Additional hypotheses tested in this study include the effect that robots have on the perceptions of the work force toward the company's employment level, worker apprehension and reaction, training, safety, health, and competition.

Abstract:
There is growing psychological research linking affect to the content and process of thinking. This paper deals with one aspect of affect and social cognition, the interaction of affect and shared understanding. It is theorized that affect may have cognitive processing consequences for shared understanding in design. In order to investigate this question, this paper develops a research method that brings together theories and instruments from cognitive science, linguistics, and design studies to study the link between affect and shared understanding in design. First, the paper reviews a framework for analyzing the process of creating shared understanding. Second, the paper presents a linguistic framework and analysis technique for extracting affective content from language based on the explicit, conscious expression of affect through favorable and unfavorable attitudes towards specific subjects. Third, the paper proposes a model of shared understanding that is interdependent, in part, with affective processing. The linguistic analysis and shared understanding analysis framework are applied to a transcript of collaborative design to illustrate how the affective content of designers’ communication shifts design activities. We find that our research method allows affect to be observed concurrently with cognitive processing and that, owing to the motivational consequences of affect, produces an axis of evaluation that could shed light on how affect organizes and drives the outcomes of design thinking.

Abstract:
In the days of modern engineering, a complex system can be designed and built using numerous sources of information, knowledge, hardware, and software. A factor that impacts the success of a complex system is trust. In designing a framework that allows for a unified trust model or trusting picture and defining a reliable metric for measuring trustworthiness, we are examining definitions and methodologies from social sciences and engineering. This paper uses a combination of publication analysis of research literature including psychological, sociological, economic, automation, and cyberspace perspectives of trust and technical dialogues with the subject matter experts at the Air Force Research Laboratory, to illuminate the interdisciplinary approach undertaken in hardware centric design with human interface. We review past work to highlight trustworthiness characteristics and trust measurements that conceptually could apply across fields under examination. We expect to create a more rigorous definition of trust and trustworthiness that leads to finding the appropriate metrics to measure trust and trustworthiness dynamically.

Abstract:
A deviation of reality from our prior expectation causes positive or negative emotions such as unexpected pleasure or disappointment depending on the condition. Although recognition of this psychological phenomenon has much potential in the design of a product’s emotional quality, i.e., that which evokes the customer’s specific feelings, impressions, or emotions, this factor is largely unexplored. In the transition from prior expectation to posterior experience, we often observe switching sensory modalities, such as from vision to touch. In this paper, we discuss the differences in emotional quality between different sensory modalities in the context of shifting from visual expectation to somatosensory experience. As a case study, we investigate the effects of an object’s surface characteristics on the deviation from visual expectation in the context of “lifting an object”. In this context, the sensory modality shifts from vision to touch and vision, i.e., we see and then lift a target object. We conducted an experiment using cylinder-shaped objects of equal weight with different surface characteristics such as brightness, roughness and gloss. The experiment consists of three phases. 1) We asked eight participants to give their impressions by only looking at the object using adjectives and onomatopoeias, 2) we asked them to lift the objects and recorded their grip force, and 3) we conducted the same evaluation as the first phase except that the participants were allowed to pick up the objects. The results show that the deviation from visual prediction regarding object massiveness and surface roughness can be observed using redundant grip force differences, and that this deviation affects a posteriori tactile emotional qualities such as tactile feelings. With the result, we discuss the need to consider such deviations in emotional quality design.

Abstract:
Green or living walls are active bio-filters developed to enhance air quality. Often, these walls form the base from which plants are grown; and the plant-wall system helps to remove both gaseous and particulate air pollutants. They can be classified as passive or active systems. The active systems are designed with ventilators which force air through the substrate and plant rooting system, therefore the air is purified and filtered through a bio-filtration process which also acts as a natural cooling system. Their benefits include temperature reduction, improvement of air quality and reduction of air pollution, oxygen production as well as the social and psychological wellbeing. They can produce changes in the ambient conditions (temperature and humidity) of the air layers around them which create an interesting insulation effect. The effect of green wall modules on the air temperature and on humidity is investigated in this work. A closed chamber made of acrylic sheets is used to monitor the temperature and humidity variation caused by a green wall module placed at its center. A fan positioned at the back center of the module drives air at ambient conditions and direct it into the module. Temperature and humidity are measured at different locations inside the chamber during operation for different modules with different plant species. The effect of changing the surrounding ambient conditions is also investigated.

Full text
Abstract:
The construction industry has tried out a variety of trends in its field to bring out innovative, economic, efficient and sustainable infrastructure to meet the growing demand. One such development is the off-site manufactured modular steel buildings. The practice reduces the construction period as well as reduces wastage of resources. It was extensively used for low rise structures earlier, but due to increasing urban construction demand the practice is preferred nowadays in high rise structures too. For the high rise structures the lateral stability needed to be well looked into as there may arise a mass irregularity, structural irregularity, discontinuity etc. Psychological acceptance of such construction practice by the public is also not assured as they are not well aware of the advantages and use of the practice. And hence there is a need to conduct detailed and thorough investigation on its contradiction part to seismic performance. The modular construction consists of different structural systems and load transferring mechanisms. The integration of many materials and elements to modular structures are also discussed in various papers. But regarding lateral force resistance of its structural and non-structural components only limited research is conducted. Further research is required. The aim of the study is to provide a collective critical review on individual units or components of the structural system and their effects contributing to seismic resistance.

Abstract:
The article clarifies of gender identity stereotypes in modern media. The main gender stereotypes covered in modern mass media are analyzed and refuted. The model of gender relations in the media is reflected mainly in the stereotypical images of men and woman. The features of the use of gender concepts in modern periodicals for women and men were determined. The most frequently used derivatives of these macroconcepts were identified and analyzed in detail. It has been found that publications for women and men are full of various gender concepts that are used in different contexts. Ingeneral, theanalysisofthe concept-maximums and concept-minimum gender and their characteristics is carried out in the context of gender stereotypes that have been forme dand function in the society, system atizing the a ctual presentations. The study of the gender concept is relevant because it reveals new trends and features of modern gender images. Taking into account the special features of gender-labeled periodicals in general and the practical absence of comprehensive scientific studies of the gender concept in particular, there is a need to supplement Ukrainian science with this topic. Gender psychology, which is served by methods of various sciences, primarily sociological, pedagogical, linguistic, psychological, socio-psychological. Let us pay attention to linguistic and psycholinguistic methods in gender studies. Linguistic methods complement intelligence research tasks, associated with speech, word and text. Psycholinguistic methods used in gender psychology (semantic differential, semantic integral, semantic analysis of words and texts), aimed at studying speech messages, specific mechanisms of origin and perception, functions of speech activity in society, studying the relationship between speech messages and gender properties participants in the communication, to analyze the linguistic development in connection with the general development of the individual. Nowhere in gender practice there is the whole arsenal of psychological methods that allow you to explore psychological peculiarities of a person like observation, experiments, questionnaires, interviews, testing, modeling, etc. The methods of psychological self-diagnostics include: the gender aspect of the own socio-psychological portrait, a gender biography as a variant of the biographical method, aimed at the reconstruction of individual social experience. In the process of writing a gender autobiography, a person can understand the characteristics of his gender identity, as well as ways and means of their formation. Socio-psychological methods of studying gender include the study of socially constructed women’s and men’s roles, relationships and identities, sexual characteristics, psychological characteristics, etc. The use of gender indicators and gender approaches as a means of socio-psychological and sociological analysis broadens the subject boundaries of these disciplines and makes them the subject of study within these disciplines. And also, in the article a combination of concrete-historical, structural-typological, system-functional methods is implemented. Descriptive and comparative methods, method of typology, modeling are used. Also used is a method of content analysis for the study of gender content of modern gender-stamped journals. It was he who allowed quantitatively to identify and explore the features of the gender concept in the pages of periodicals for women and men. A combination of historical, structural-typological, system-functional methods is also implemented in the article. Descriptive and comparative methods, method of typology, modeling are used. A method of content analysis for the study of gender content of modern gender-labeled journals is also used. It allowed to identify and explore the features of the gender concept quantitatively in the periodicals for women and men. The conceptual perception and interpretation of the gender concept «woman», which is highlighted in the modern gender-labeled press in Ukraine, requires the elaboration of the polyfunctionality of gender interpretations, the comprehension of the metaphorical perception of this image and its role and purpose in society. A gendered approach to researching the gender content of contemporary periodicals for women and men. Conceptual analysis of contemporary gender-stamped publications within the gender conceptual sphere allows to identify and correlate the meta-gender and gender concepts that appear in society.
