Abstract:
Nightmares, a common sleep disturbance which provoke fearful awakening, have been found to be a significant predictor of suicidal thoughts and behaviours. The research presented in this thesis aims to firstly examine if nightmares are predictive of self-harm regardless of suicidal intent or motivation, and secondly to explore the psychological mechanism linking the occurrence of nightmares to self-harm. Chapter 2, an online survey, revealed that nightmares were a significant predictor of self-harm regardless of suicidal intent or motivation and that this relationship remained when controlling

It is well established that young offenders show high rates of mental health problems and are at high risk for suicidal behaviour. Despite this, very little is known about the nature of self harm in young offenders and, crucially, what the best predictors of self harm are in this group. This is due largely to the majority of research so far being atheoretical and using inconsistent measures and definitions of suicidal behaviour. To date there have been no studies of self harm behaviour in community young offenders, a population who have been neglected in research, despite growing evidence that

The aims of this thesis are twofold: to provide an account of the lived experience of the harm of male-on-female rape in patriarchal societies and, on the basis of this account, to generate suggestions that could be of use in the recovery process for survivors of this type of rape. In order to reach these aims my thesis is divided into three parts. In the first part, I propose a phenomenologically based account of women’s situation as a group under patriarchy, according to which women as a group are subjugated to the hegemonic rule of patriarchal ideology. Preventable patient harm and medical error occur frequently in health care. Despite the apparent widespread commitment to the “First do no harm” aphorism in medicine, it has proved difficult to get prompt, effective and sustained action to detect and prevent these. The existence of preventable patient harm and medical error has been well established over the past 50 years and its high frequency has been confirmed in many international studies over the past two decades. The thesis used a secondary source research methodology across a wide ra

Abstract:
All companies have strategic assets comprising financial capital, physical capital, human capital and organisational capital which, when effectively utilised, contribute to the competitive advantage necessary to survive in a globalised economy. The manifestation of adverse factors in a company will impact detrimentally on the performance of these strategic assets. Since the 1980s, one factor has become prominent in the management of a company’s human capital, namely sexual harassment. Sexual harassment constitutes behaviour of a sexual nature that leads to, and perpetuates, a working envi

Abstract:
Clients diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) interact with healthcare professionals in compelling ways. By virtue of the symptoms that define BPD, it is likely that the client will challenge the therapist with regards to their theoretical approach or therapeutic style. In addition, clients with BPD are likely to project their need for a therapeutic interaction that is both genuine, empathic and at the same time, flexible. In light of this, it is not uncommon for healthcare practitioners to consider clients with BPD as “difficult” in some way or the other. This study explores ho

Abstract:
Within the context of recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments the recognition and enforcement of foreign custody orders is unique. By reason of the fact that custody orders are always modifiable "in the best interests of the child" they cannot be regarded as final orders and are thus not capable of recognition and enforcement on the same basis as final orders. The failure of courts to afford foreign custody orders recognition and enforcement in the normal course has created the potential for a person deprived of the custody of a child to remove the child from the jurisdiction of

These factors are negatively influenced by the interaction of other elements such as the inadequate cultural and social nurturing and lack of support.
