Narrative psychologists have increasingly sought to understand how cultural, collective narratives relate to individual life narratives. Two promising approaches are the study of how cultural master narratives influence personal narratives, and the study of generativity. These developments need to be extended through analysis of the ‘politics of storytelling’ – the ways in which life and collective narratives are implicated in the sociopolitical milieu. We draw on Sartre’s late work on the interrelationship between biography and history. Sartre suggests an individual life can incarnate history
