Abstract:
The American Psychological Association's “Psychology as a Health Care Profession” (1979) contains a review of several studies on the cost-effectiveness of psychotherapy. As we document, that review does not consider viable alternative interpretations or qualify findings in line with the studies' substantial limitations, e.g., their lack of controls for regression or selection biases. Following our critique, we suggest that in light of the financial contingencies surrounding conclusions about the effectiveness of psychotherapy, special care must be taken to ensure that psychology's public stance on the value of psychotherapy contains the qualifications suggested by the scientific evidence. Public statements by the American Psychological Association on the issue of the effectiveness of psychotherapy might be based on a review of the scientific merits of pertinent studies by an independent body of research methodologists.

Abstract:
The research literature on evidence-based academic interventions focuses predominantly on measures of intervention effectiveness. Intervention efficiency measures, in contrast, include the dimension of time required to achieve a level of effectiveness. The purpose of this study was to review the research literature for single-case design studies that included measures of both effectiveness and efficiency for academic (i.e., reading, math, writing, and spelling) interventions in schools. The study reviewed single-case design research on academic interventions published in six dominant peer-reviewed journals in school psychology between 2003-2013: School Psychology Review, School Psychology Quarterly, Psychology in the Schools, Journal of School Psychology, Journal of Behavioral Education, and the Journal of Evidence-Based Practices for Schools. The results of this study suggest that intervention efficiency measures are largely absent from the academic intervention research. The implications of this study are that both effectiveness and efficiency measures need to be considered as they each provide a unique contribution to determining the impact of an academic intervention. Key words: intervention efficiency, single-case designs.

Abstract:
An introductory survey of the literature is presented in which the author emphasizes the lack of theoretical sophistication in psychology. It is argued that a greater awareness of theoretical and conceptual problems now exists, and that studies addressing these or similar issues are starting to appear with greater frequency. Two general approaches to the improvement of theoretical development are contrasted: the constructivist philosophy (theoretical sophistication will be achieved by lower level theories spontaneously falling into place) and the comparative approach (theories should be analysed and compared in order to assess their complementary explanatory power and jurisdiction). Case studies of sound theoretical analyses are presented, and conclusions about the necessary elements of a good analysis are drawn. It is argued that metatheoretical issues cannot be ignored, and that the comparative approach to theoretical analysis has much more to offer in the way of theoretical development in psychology than the constructivist approach.

Abstract:
This article argues how the clinical psychology of religion can support mental health and mental health care. The starting point is an ecological–existential approach to mental health, that stresses the interactions between person and environment, with an emphasis on the existential dimension of interactions. This approach will be related to religion and spirituality (R/S) and the study of R/S and mental health. To show the added value of an ecological–existential approach, the emotion of shame will be discussed as an illustrative case. Finally, implications for clinical psychology of religion and mental health care will be outlined and a clinical case report will be presented.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper examines three cases of the clash between science and philosophy: Zeno’s paradoxes, the Frame Problem, and a recent attempt to experimentally refute skepticism. In all three cases, the relevant science claims to have resolved the purported problem. The sciences, construing the term broadly, are mathematics, artificial intelligence, and psychology. The goal of this paper is to show that none of the three scientific solutions work. The three philosophical problems remain as vibrant as ever in the face of robust scientific attempts to dispel them. The paper concludes by examining some consequences of this persistence.

Abstract:
Basic learning theorists developed the response-disequilibrium model to resolve the long-standing psychological puzzle of how to specify in advance the circumstances that will yield reinforcement effects. The model explains the behavioral changes in reinforcement effects as predictable adaptations to external constraints on the free-baseline levels of those behaviors. Here we introduce response-disequilibrium therapy (RDx), a clinical intervention based on this model. We present a series of clinical case studies using RDx to treat obsessive-compulsive disorders, report highly favorable results in comparison with the standard therapy, and discuss the implications.

Abstract:
In spite of a burgeoning literature demonstrating the importance of religiousness as a determinant of a wide range of behaviors, social psychology continues to ignore this important construct. This article begins with the current spate of interest in religion in virtually the entire field of psychology, and then goes on to present a cursory history of the recent psychology of religion. Attention then turns to the most recent (4th) edition of The Handbook of Social Psychology (Gilbert, Fiske, & Lindzey 1998a), noting that the concept of religion is largely absent. It is concluded that there are disadvantages resulting in social psychology from this omission, including loss of explanatory power, and lack of engagement in important social issues.

Abstract:

Scientometric results on publication trends in clinical psychology, which refer to publication type and methodology of case studies/reports, are presented. Absolute and relative frequencies of clinical case studies are identified for the segment “mental and behavioral disorders” in MEDLINE (ICD-10 Chapter V [F]) as well as for clinical psychology publications documented in PsycINFO and PSYNDEX in 40 publication years (1975-2014). Results show an increase of the absolute number of published case studies documented in MEDLINE and PsycINFO (but not in PSYNDEX), which is highly correlated with the total increase of clinical psychology publications in both databases. Relative frequencies show another picture, namely a drop of the percentage of case studies on mental and behavioral disorders in MEDLINE, and a sharp drop in PSYNDEX since the 1980s. The trend for the relative frequency of case studies within all publications on clinical psychology documented in PsycINFO is V-shaped with 6% in the 1970s, 3% in the early 1990s, and 4-5% after the millennium. Pros and cons of case studies in clinical psychology research and education are discussed. Qualitative and quantitative case study methodologies are distinguished with respect to the phases of clinical trials and observational studies in evidence-based and empirically supported psychotherapy. Subsequently, methodological constraints are balanced with specific values in clinical training, applied research, and innovative research on the symptomatology, etiology, and classification of mental disorders as well as on combined and/or integrative treatment techniques and methods.

Abstract:
Four self-management exercises completed by advanced psychology students as part of their course of instruction are summarised. The cases illustrate the level of sophistication of clinical replications that can be attempted in a semester unit. These cases were chosen because they targeted long-standing serious problems which none of the students thought would be responsive to behavioural-cognitive techniques applied by themselves. The problems were nocturnal bruxism, excessive urinary frequency, unassertiveness, and dog phobia. All were successful in meeting the initial therapeutic objectives that had been set, but gains were not maintained in the cases of bruxism and excessive urinary frequency. The value and problems associated with self-management exercises as a teaching tool are discussed.

Abstract:
In the Russian cultural-historical psychology (in the clinical psychology, first of all), there was a bunch of studies based on the exploration of individual (singular) case. The article focuses on analysis of those studies and demonstrates principal difference of the approach used in them from other methodologies and approaches to the analysis of individual case. Russian perspective was originally based on the fundamental ideas of Lev S. Vygotsky; nevertheless, they were not sufficiently reflected in the Russian psychology. Examining Vygotsky’s texts, the authors discuss more profound reflection and further development of Vygotsky’s ideas as applied to the analysis of the individual case in the cultural-historical psychology. The article shows the possibilities to elaborate this approach on the basis of concepts by Lev Vygotsky and Mikhail Bakhtin and gives own studies of the authors as an example of such an elaboration. Furthermore, the article argues that the integration of objective cultural-historical psychology and phenomenology, hermeneutics, dialogical psychology would be of significance if developed in the direction of cultural-historical psychology of Vygotsky — Bakhtin. Such an approach allows to address general psychological issues and opens up new opportunities in certain applied studies in the field of cultural-historical psychology.

Abstract:
As a research method, case studies are often used in qualitative research, but there is no agreement on research procedures. Case studies have been widely used in psychology, which is not only used in the context of research but it has different meanings. The purpose of this article is to provide a description of the case study as a research method, by providing an overview of the procedures for conducting research which includes when case studies can be used, research design, data collection, data validity, and data analysis. This article seeks to help emerging researchers in the field of psychology with several views from Robert Yin and Robert Stake. This article helps researchers to familiarize themselves with the procedures of qualitative research using case studies. A case study approach that is applied correctly can be a valuable method for conducting research, especially in the field of psychology as a means of developing theory, evaluating programs, developing interventions.
