The intention of this thesis is to examine representations of gender and gender roles in a variety of discursive situations, using the methodology of discourse analysis (a systematic method of investigating natural language data). As of 2005, 28.5 million people in southern Africa were living with HIV and 57% of them are women (UNAIDS, 2005). Breast cancer patients consistently reported psychosocial adjustment difficulty in their sense of femininity after breast removal surgery.
