Myers, Jeanette. "The Effects of Attitudes Towards Homosexuality on the Ability to Reason Logically About Homosexuality." TopSCHOLAR®, 2001. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/689.

Abstract:
This researcher examined how participants' attitudes towards homosexuality influenced their ability to reason on logic test items concerning homosexuality. A 64-item logic test was developed to measure distortion in reasoning due to prohomosexual or antihomosexual beliefs (measured by 32 items), while controlling for distortions caused by the truth or falseness of conclusions on nonhomosexual matters (also measured by 32 items). McFarlands' (2000) abbreviated version of the Attitudes Towards Homosexuality Scale (ATH Scale) was administered to directly measure participants' attitudes. The logic test and ATH Scale was administered to 201 undergraduate psychology students. Data analyses showed a significant amount of distortion due to the truth-value of the conclusion. Correlations between scores on the logic test and the ATH Scale, after partialing out the effects of the truth-value of the conclusions, showed that on the logically valid items where accuracy was generally high, both antihomosexual and prohomosexual attitudes produced logical distortion in the direction of those attitudes. But on the invalid items, where logical error rates were much higher, only antihomosexual attitudes led to distortion. Overall, the findings provide more support for hypothesis that people with antihomosexual attitudes distort reasoning in keeping with their attitudes about these issues than do those with prohomosexual attitudes

Abstract:

Over the past five years, American public opinion on homosexuality has rapidly shifted in a more positive direction. Its subjugation exemplifies how an intimate and singular topic can be used to ignite and potentially misguide the American people, resulting in violent demonstration and even death. Although public opinion has shifted towards a greater acceptance of homosexuality, viewpoints are still very polarized. In addition to the available literature, elements from the complete data set of the General Social Survey (1972–2014) were analyzed to better understand this polarization that persists. Subject-specific variables concerning homosexuality were extrapolated and simple Ordinary Least Squares regression models were tested using STATA version SE 12.1. The evidence gathered supports this thesis’ assertion that Snyder’s theory of hope, when applied to the topic of homosexuality, provides a uniquely useful and alternative lens through which to explain the polarization of current public opinion about homosexuality in America.

Robertson, Veronica L. "Homosexuality : the disclosure process during adolescence." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/17954.

Abstract:
Thesis (MEd )--Stellenbosch University, 2011.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: During no other time in history have sexual minority individuals been the recipients of so much attention, scrutiny and unprecedented acceptance and inclusion into mainstream culture. However, despite advances and society's ever increasing tolerance toward sexual minorities, many individuals with alternative sexual orientations remain fearful of disclosing their sexuality. Consequently, adolescents often hide their alternative sexual orientation from others or disclose to only a select few. Adolescents with alternative sexual orientations face unique challenges, such as the coming out process, during which they must recognise, explore, define and disclose their orientation in a way that heterosexual individuals need not. Disclosure of an alternative sexual orientation is a struggle for most lesbian, gay and bisexual youth due to fears of discrimination, ostracism and violence from others. Despite a growing body of scientific literature on homosexuality in general, little is known about the disclosure process and its impact on an adolescent. This study seeks to help fill the gaps by giving voice to the adolescent by exploring the experience of disclosure. Furthermore, this study seeks to provide insight and knowledge to mental health professionals to aid adolescent clients throughout the disclosure process. This study's research methodology can be described as qualitative research which is embedded within an interpretive/constructivist paradigm. Purposive sampling was used to select five male and five female research participants. The methods of data collection that were employed comprised semi-structured individual interviews and reflective notes. Furthermore, content analysis was used to analyse the data. The findings of this study suggest that many unique issues besides the normative challenges that lesbian and gay adolescents share with heterosexual adolescents characterise their development. This research study suggests that there are several milestones that are characteristic of lesbian and gay identity development, the negotiation of which may hinder development in other areas. The male and female participants described a similar trajectory to coming out, consistently identifying a feeling of being different during early childhood which resolved into an awareness of same-sex attraction that concluded in their self-labelling as gay or lesbian. The findings of this study suggest that the process of disclosure is continuous and emergent. The reactions of parents ranged from extreme outrage and expulsion from the home to support and acceptance of the fact that their child had disclosed his/her homosexual orientation. From the findings of this study it would appear that the participants' parents were initially ill prepared and unable to support their child during his/her disclosure. The participants voiced various strategies to support an adolescent in the position of disclosing to family. There are several implications of this study's findings for mental health professionals working with lesbian, gay and bisexual adolescents and youth.

Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 50-54.
For many years psychodynamically oriented research into homosexuality has been a topic for controversy. The "gay" community as well as many more sociologically oriented researchers see any investigation of the psychodynamics of this orientation as implying pathology and therefore contributing to stigmatization of homosexuals. More recently, however, psychoanalytic writers have questioned traditional assumptions and pointed to a need to look at the diversity of homosexual adaptations. Of interest in a more recent perspective is Socarides' (1979) classification, distinguishing between pre-oedipal and oedipal types of homosexuals. This paper argues that while generalization about "homosexuals" is impossible, a psychodynamic approach is useful in looking at the meaning and adaptive function of the homosexual orientation in each individual client and thus understand it in relation to personality organization and behaviour. A brief summary of psychoanalytic theory of male homosexuality is given with an emphasis on Socarides' classification. Two case studies are presented in an attempt to illustrate the usefulness of a psychodynamic approach and of the oedipal - pre-oedipal distinction. It is suggested that this distinction be seen more as a continuum of varying levels of ego-functioning.

Abstract:
Existing research has revealed a robust relationship between high religiosity and negative attitudes towards sexual minorities. To date, however, there have been few studies investigating this relationship within the membership of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the LDS Church). The unique history, doctrine, and organization of this religion, along with its large size, rapid growth, and sizable influence, indicate that a study of homophobia among church members will provide additional information about the relationship between religiosity and negative attitudes. These data will shed additional light on the make-up and nature of homophobia, offer insight into the relationship between religious and homophobic attitudes and behaviors, and better inform mental health professionals working with individuals identifying as members of the LDS Church, as members of a sexual minority, or as members of both groups. The following research includes the administration of a survey to college-age LDS church members gathering data regarding several dimensions of LDS religiosity, several dimensions of attitudes towards sexual minorities, and demographic data. Subsequent analysis of the gathered data has clarified the nature of the relationship between the measured dimensions of LDS religiosity and homophobia, specifically, that overall LDS religiosity correlates positively with negative attitudes towards sexual minorities, and that some individual dimensions of religiosity, particularly commitment to the LDS Church, are particularly predictive of negative attitudes.

Rush, Jeffrey D. "Perceived favorability of sexual reorientation versus gay affirmative therapy in regard to psychologists' etiological beliefs about male homosexuality." Virtual Press, 2004. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1285091.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines how the beliefs of 139 psychologists regarding the causes of male homosexuality influenced how favorably they perceived male clients presenting in therapy with concerns about sexual orientation. The independent variables were the goal the client identified (accept or change his orientation) and the beliefs the psychologist had about the causes of homosexuality (more the result of "nature" or "nurture"). It was hypothesized that a significant interaction would be found between the client's goal from therapy and the psychologists' etiological beliefs, which would influence favorability of client perception. It was further hypothesized that psychologists would perceive a client seeking change would be perceived less favorably than one seeking to accept his orientation. To measure participants' beliefs, the Etiological Beliefs Regarding Male Homosexuality (EBRMH) scale was developed. Positive scores indicate more internal beliefs (nature), whereas negative scores reflect more external beliefs (nurture). Favorability was assessed by combining four ratings participants' made about the client: 1-client's level of pathology, 2-appropriateness of the client's goal for therapy, 3-likelihood the client will achieve his goal, and 4-participants' willingness to provide requested treatment. Data were analyzed using multiple regression, and no demographic variables made a significant contribution to the model. Both independent variables and their interaction were significant, however. The interaction was more closely examined using the Johnson-Neyman technique. The research hypotheses were largely supported. Participants viewing homosexuality as more influenced by internal factors strongly preferred clients seeking to accept their homosexuality over clients wanting to change it. Participants with more external beliefs felt more similarly regarding clients regardless of goal, though most viewed the client wanting to accept his orientation more favorably. A small group of participants (n = 8) with extremely external beliefs reported no difference in how they viewed the client regardless of his goal. The results of the present study challenge some empirically supported beliefs about judgments regarding homosexual clients. Specifically, several factors often considered to influence how favorably a homosexual client is seen (e.g. amount of clinical experience with homosexual clients, being homosexual oneself) had no real influence on favorability ratings.

Abstract:
In the current project, I examined the distinct elicitors and behavioral outcomes of anti-gay anger and anti-gay disgust. The CAD triad hypothesis (Rozin, Lower, Imada, & Haidt, 1999) suggests that anger and disgust are elicited by distinct moral violations and cognitive appraisals. A plethora of research has documented the strong link between disgust and sexual prejudice, but very little attention has been given to the role of anger in sexual prejudice. The biocultural framework of stigmatization (Neuberg, Smith, & Asher, 2000) suggests that people who counter-socialize against prevailing social norms are stigmatized by others. If homosexual sexual behavior does not elicit anti-gay anger (Giner-Sorrolla, Bosson, Caswell & Hettinger, 2012), then anti-gay anger might be elicited by promoting positive views of homosexuality. In Study 1, participants were induced to feel anger, disgust, or no emotion and then rated one of two gay male target groups. I expected that cognitive appraisals of morality violation would increase when the emotional state was congruent with the perceived threat posed by the target, but the emotion induction failed to elicit differences in cognitive appraisals. The results of Study 2, collected from a non-student sample, were also inconsistent with my hypothesis. Sexually explicit behavior did not elicit disgust, and behavior which resulted in more tolerant attitudes toward homosexuality failed to elicit anger and harm appraisals. These results suggest that sexual prejudice research requires stricter experimental control than online data collection methods currently allow.

Abstract:
Parents who experience their children's coming out encounter emotional reactions that could compromise their ability to function, particularly when challenged by the Catholic doctrine towards homosexuality. It is not well known how Latino parents experience their children's coming out and how they mediate their Catholic identity. The purpose of this research was to explore the experiences of these parents considering phenomenology as the method of inquiry. The theoretical lens was based on the parental acceptance-rejection theory. The research questions addressed how Latinos experienced the coming out of their children and how they mediated their identities as Catholics and as parents of a lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB) child. The data for this study consisted of 12 interviews with parents using an open-ended, and a semistructured format. A total of 6 themes (disclosure of an LGB identity, conflicts, help towards conflict resolution, church support, acceptance, and identity consolidation) and 10 subthemes (suspicion of an LGB identity, unexpected disclosure, internal, family, cultural and church conflicts, God's love, unconditional love, parenting pride, and Catholic pride) emerged from the analysis. The results indicated that Latino parents underscored the positive qualities of their LGB children while other Latino parents criticize the Catholic doctrine towards homosexuality. In conclusion, the notion of an all-loving and all-accepting God prompted Latinos to consolidate their identities as Catholic and as parents of a LGB child. Implications for positive social change include the education of behavioral health professionals and the Catholic clergy to enhance their professional competencies to assist Latino parents seeking counseling services or seeking spiritual care within the Roman Catholic Church.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The primary objectives of the present research were to predict the quality of relationships of gay male couples, as well as those of the members of the couples, on the basis of chosen variables. These chosen variables were taken along an ecological framework, which took into account variables from a personal, psychological, interpersonal and social context. Five variables received wide coverage in the present research: The sexual behavioural status of the relationship, sex role self-concept, sex role behaviour, perceived social support from family and friends, and passing. Partner-homogamy was also an important variable in the present research. This resulted in differences in the chosen variables within couples being used to predict the quality of the relationships of gay male couples. A sample of 30 couples was obtained through advertisements in the local gay press. The sample comprised mostly middle and high-class whites who had been involved in well-functioning, long-lasting (:t 8 years) relationships and who had lived together. Each couple received by mail two identical sets of measuring instruments - one for each member of the couple - to complete independently from the other. The measuring instruments, which were all self-reporting scales, were the Biographical and Personal Questionnaire, the Dyadic Adjustment Scale, the Bern Sex Role Inventory, the Shared Decision Making Scale, the Perceived Social Support Scale, the Being Known to Distant Others Scale, the Being Known to Significant Others Scale, and the Desire to Pass Scale. Results were obtained through statistical analysis with both the couples (N = 30) and the partners (N = 60) as the unit of analysis. When the respective results are viewed together, the most important correlates of the quality of relationships were an increase in the length of the relationship, a female self-concept among both partners, the viewing of shared decision making within the relationship, and overtly maintaining a gay lifestyle, together with partner-homogamy with regard to a female self-concept, perceived social support from friends, and the level of overtness concerning sexual preferences. Furthermore, it was important that psychological masculinity had to be vested in one member of the couple only. The most important predictors of the quality of well adjusted relationships were an increase in the length of the relationship, a female self-concept among both partners, the viewing of shared decision making in the relationship, little perceived social support from friends and family, and maintaining an overt gay lifestyle, together with the homogamy of partners towards perceived social support from friends, being known as gay to significant others, and the view of shared decision making in the relationship respectively. Furthermore, it was important that one of the members had to have previous experience of gay relationships. The greatest limitation of the present research was the small sample which resulted in low statistical power. The research has, however, made a contribution by shedding light on the functioning of gay male couples within the South African context.

Abstract:
This study investigates the relationship between an individual's attitude toward gay men and lesbians and their identity development. The sample included 440 undergraduates from a university in the northeast Texas area. Many, if not all, of the factors that are associated with negative attitudes toward gays and lesbians (i.e., restrictive gender-role attitudes, high levels of authoritarianism, perceptions of negative attitudes toward homosexuals within their peer group, little or no contact with homosexuals, and conservative religious ideologies) have a logical relation to identity development. Furthermore, the various functions that attitudes toward gays and lesbians can serve (e.g., value-expression, group membership) were hypothesized to be especially attractive for persons in specific identity statuses. Thus, the case was made that identity development may be a valuable framework in which to understand attitudes toward gays and lesbians. In the current study, attitudes toward gays and lesbians were related to identity development, though the relationship is complex. When comparing persons who were higher and lower on absolutism, attitude toward gays and lesbians were most similar in achieved identity groups, while those who were foreclosed were the most disparate. In the interaction between identity, absolutism and gender role stereotyping, some groups utilized their attitude to express values more than other groups. Clinical implications as well as limitations of the study are discussed.

Abstract:
This study was designed to examine psychology graduate students' attitudes toward gay men and lesbian women. It was hypothesized that the following variables would predict participants' attitudes toward gay men and lesbian women: participant gender, amount of client contact with gay men and lesbian women, and gender role attitudes. Additionally, a measure of social desirability was included to investigate the validity of responses. Data were analyzed by conducting an independent t-test, a correlated t-test, and hierarchical multiple regression. Results indicated that gay men were viewed more negatively than were lesbian women. As expected, participants' gender role attitudes significantly predicted their attitudes toward gay men and lesbian women. Contrary to predicted outcomes, results indicated that neither participant gender nor client contact predicted attitudes toward homosexuality. Finally, results suggested that participants were not engaging in socially desirable responding. Implications of this study for research, theory, and practice are discussed.

Chernin, Jeffrey N. "Development of a Discouragement Scale for Adults with Normative Data for Gay Males." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1996. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc277855/.

Abstract:
According to Alfred Adler, founder of Individual Psychology, a feeling of inferiority is in some degree common to all people. People who are unable to overcome these inferiority feelings by striving for cooperation may become discouraged. Although there are three scales to measure social interest, no scales measuring discouragement for adults was found. Additionally, Adler held basic assumptions regarding homosexuality, and the findings suggest that the assumptions should be reexamined. The purpose of this study was twofold. First, three University of North Texas candidates developed a discouragement scale for adults 18 years of age and older, known as the Discouragement Scale for Adults (DSA). Discouragement was examined relative to the five life tasks. Second, this candidate normed the instrument for the scores of gay male subjects and compared it to the scores of the other subject groups. Since the emphasis was on developing the instrument and norming it for various subject groups, no hypothesis was developed. Data was collected on three subject groups, known as the general norm subjects, the discouraged subjects, and the gay male subjects. Analyses were performed on the scores. Among the analyses, it was found that gay male subjects were slightly more discouraged than the general norm subjects, and the discouraged subjects were far greater discouraged than the other two subject groups. Initial reliability and validity was found to be high, offering support that the DSA is a reliable and valid instrument. The recommendations for further research include cultural and gender studies, predicting behavior, counseling intervention, and exploring the relationship between discouragement and stressors, such as the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

Khumalo, Senziwani. "An investigation into how Zimbabwe's Bulawayo viewers negotiate the gay storyline in Generations." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1017784.

Abstract:
This study seeks to evaluate how aspects of religion, culture, political context, education and class, amongst others, impact on the manner with which Zimbabwe’s Bulawayo residents make sense of media messages which explore issues of homosexuality, as encountered in the soap opera Generations. This is against the backdrop of Zimbabwean legislation, such as the Sexual Deviancy Act, which criminalises homosexuality and the state victimisation of gays and lesbians in this country. The inclusion of homosexual liberties was rejected by all political parties and both public and private media in the recent drafting of a new rule of law. The legislation, including gay rights exclusion in the new constitution, and state action has perpetuated an impression that Zimbabwe is a deeply homophobic society. As a starting point the study examines the claims of the media imperialism thesis which supposes an all-consuming power of western media and next examines Straubhaar’s thesis of ‘cultural proximity’ which argues that there is often a preference for regional media, which is proximate to viewers’ local culture, language and identity. The study explores the prominence of South Africa as a regional media player and that proximate identities with some cultures in that country have played a role in drawing some Bulawayo viewers to South African television, as they feel slighted by Zimbabwean media. Utilising qualitative research methods, the study explores whether or not the representation of gay images on this South African soap opera provides viewers with opportunities for ‘symbolic distancing’. The concept highlights that when people have insight into lifestyles that are different from their own, they use that as a resource to critically analyse their own lives and cultural understandings. The study evaluates if Bulawayo viewers’ sentiments towards homosexuality has been challenged and changed through their interface with the soap opera, Generations.

Abstract:
The internalization of heterosexism places lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals at disproportionately higher risks of depression and self-destructive behaviors. For LGB Christians, this phenomenon is often exacerbated. Although literature on heterosexism has increased, little research has examined more insular, religious environments. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between Christian denominational religiosity and heterosexism and to compare the degree of religiosity and heterosexism between members of 5 Christian denominations and between same-sex sexuality perspectives in the southern United States. Guided by the attribution theory, a correlational, cross-sectional survey design was used to analyze degree of religiosity and heterosexism among 225 self-identifying Christians as measured by the Religiosity Measure and Attitudes Toward Lesbians and Gay Men Scale. A Pearson Correlation revealed a large, positive relationship between religiosity and heterosexism. Two ANOVAs revealed significant differences in degrees of religiosity among denominations and same-sex sexuality perspective, in addition to significant differences in degrees of heterosexism among denominations and same-sex sexuality perspectives. Implications for positive social change center on illuminating the effects of heterosexism in insular environments, which may contribute to the understanding of heterosexist ideology including heteronormative assumptions that are replete throughout the United States, including mental health professions. Moreover, LGB Christians may particularly benefit from understanding the variability and distinctions within denominational religiosity, such that denominational choices become evident and viable options.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to create an understanding of the life-views of persons identifying themselves as homosexual, bisexual, transpersons and/or queer (H/B/T/Q) in Sweden today. We had an explorative approach to this aim and used Grounded theory as a research method. We interviewed 11 H/B/T/Q-persons living in Örebro, and we found some central themes wich were frequently described, generally about how the social interaction with others had an effect on their own processes to living an open H/B/T/Q-life or having a restrictive approach. We also found that living openly as an H/B/T/Q-person seemed to be a salutogene factor. Those factors that we found to be central in the interactional processes to openly or restrictive ways of living as a H/B/T/Q-person, were illustrated in theoretical models, where the relationships between heteronormativity, individual interactional strategies and social support were focused.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the relationship between identity, behaviour and desire to examine the nature of research among homosexually active men. The hypothesis is that samples of such men necessarily reflect the definitions of sexuality and homosexuality, and their interpretation, by both the researchers themselves and their research subjects, meaning that the research process itself is marked by the subjectivity of the field of sexuality. The relationship between the observer and the observed is intrinsic to research into homosexual subjectivity and the samples obtained, therefore, represent particular kinds of sexual subjects in a particular social and sexual cultural milieu. Research in this field has given pre-eminence to behaviour over identity and desire, and, as such, has usually failed to account for these differences in sexual subjectivities. To investigate this problem, I have reviewed the relevant literature both on subjectivity and on methodological approaches to research among homosexual men, and I have appraised my own ideological and personal relationships with the subject matter. I have examined the nature of the samples of homosexual men I have obtained during my work as a researcher within the Sydney gay community and reanalysed these with regard to the particular problematic I have identified. These investigations and analyses have shown that there are numerous differences within and between the various samples of homosexual men obtained, indicating that methodological frameworks can determine the nature of the samples obtained. These differences in samples also appear to reflect differences in the ways of enacting homosexual desire among the men in the studies. However, they also parallel differences in the definitions and understandings of the target population by the researchers themselves. These differences reflect differences in definition and understanding both of homosexuality and of the population of gay men, but they also represent differing patterns in the ways of being and living ?gay?, differences in sexual subjectivity. ?Gayness? and homosexuality, as concepts in research, are both the subjective basis on which the research endeavour itself is based, as well as its representational outcome.

Abstract:
The Modern Homonegativity Scale (MHS) is designed to measure a distinct modern form of prejudice against gay people. Based on the conceptual framework of old-fashioned and modern antigay prejudice advanced by Morrison and Morrison, the present study was conducted to assess the reliability and validity of the MHS as a measure of modern antigay prejudice in the southern United States a region where antigay prejudice appears to be particularly pervasive and damaging. This purpose was achieved by analyzing survey responses from 691 adult residents of 14 southern states. As hypothesized, MHS scores were correlated with political conservatism, contact with gay people, nonabusive antigay behavior, and scores on a traditional measure of antigay prejudice. Contrary to hypotheses, MHS scores were not related to sexual orientation, educational level, income level, or religious self-schema. Results concerning the relationships between MHS scores and other known correlates of antigay prejudice were mixed. In factor analyses, items on the MHS and a traditional measure of antigay prejudice did not load on different factors. The results of this study suggest that the MHS is a highly reliable measure of modern antigay prejudice in the South, but that its validity as such is limited. This study promotes positive social change by providing evidence that should aid in the selection of appropriate measures to use in future studies of prejudice against gay people in the South. Such studies promise to result in the development of more effective interventions to reduce antigay prejudice in the southern United States but such studies will produce useful findings only to the extent that the instruments used are reliable and valid measures of the constructs they purport to measure in this region.

Abstract:
The effects of knowing or not knowing the satirical nature of a piece of humor were examined and compared to the effects of disparaging humor. One hundred and twenty-six heterosexual undergraduate students (male: n = 43; female: n = 83) were randomly assigned a satirical or an offensive comic about gay men. Some of those who read the satirical piece were told of the satirical intentions of the author. Some of the predicted hypotheses were partially supported. Low SDO participants found the satirical comic, regardless of whether the author’s satirical intentions were explicitly told or not, less humorous and more offensive than high SDO participants. On the other hand, high SDO participants found the disparaging comic to be more humorous and less offensive than low SDO participants. The implications of these findings as well as the difficulties with measuring the effects of satire are addressed.

Abstract:
It is intended through this research to understand how the clinic psychologist interacts with the homosexuality brought by clients during the therapeutic process. The homosexuality, which until recently was considered as a disease or a behavioral deviation, is gaining special attention from the Psychology professionals not only because its incidence is rising among adolescents, but also because under the contemporary cultural configurations it is a phenomenon that needs to be revaluated. Taking the homosexuality historical and cultural evolution as reference - including some of its theoretical approaches - and also reviewing the authors that studied the establishment and development of Psychology as science and profession, it was possible to draw a map allowing us to come closer to the psychologists proceeding, his/her role, his/her difficulties and contributions, and the influence of culture upon the therapists practice. Also, taking the phenomenological method as theoretical reference, and performing individual interviews, a qualitative research was developed, aiming to unveil the experience and resonance of therapists working with clients that face homosexual issues. Reports full of reflections and contributions lead to a surprising picture: under solving/curative demands, along with psychological theories openly biased to pathological concepts, therapists relate a clinical intervention directed to a perception of man as an entire being, allowing them a critical theoretical and social attitude regarding this growing occurrence in their offices. On the other hand, therapists reveal an unassisted theoretic/professional position when dealing with this issue and with the family/social background of their clients. On calling attention to this situation we hope to contribute to the need of further reflection and also to offer a point of view that set in motion a critical thinking regarding this matter, and to find the place of the psychologist as a professional exploring this panorama

Abstract:
The prevalence of acts related to sexual discrimination and cases of hate crimes in our country are alarming. In this regard, influential factors have been found in the development of positions about homosexuality, such as the way of parenting, the media and the social environment. In this investigation, the correlation between the sexual role of a heterosexual person and their attitudes towards homosexuality was analyzed. A sample of 268 heterosexual adults was taken into account. The results indicate that there is a positive correlation (0.007) towards homosexuality regardless of the sexual role, in addition, a greater identification with the male sexual role was identified. These findings highlight the cultural change and the acceptance that is being generated towards homosexuality as a result of interactions and education. In addition, the socially constructed beliefs about each sexual role are revealed, with masculinity being the predominant role due to the characteristics related to it. However, an increase in the identification with femininity is observed due to the search to develop new competences and soft skills required in social spaces.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A sample of 227 undergraduate students was administered pre-intervention paper-and-pencil questionnaires to assess homophobia, fear of AIDS contagion, symbolic representations of AIDS and homosexuality, and specific personality attributes including authoritarianism, religiosity, and conservatism. Participants then read one of eight intervention vignettes about an ill person; these vignettes varied by sexual orientation of the patient, disease (AIDS versus lung cancer), and mode of transmission (in the AIDS conditions). Participants then completed post-intervention measures assessing the degree to which the ill person in the vignette was responsible and to blame for his illness, the level of stigma toward him, and concerns about social interactions with him. Results indicate the following: a) Attributions of personal responsibility are primarily a function of mode of illness transmission; b) fear of AIDS contagion is predictive of stigma and social avoidance of PWAs; and c) AIDS-related stigma and attributions of blame are largely a function of symbolic associations between homosexuality and IV drug abuse (which were previously stigmatized) and AIDS.

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis was to examine the effectiveness of contact and imagined contact (a derivative of direct contact) in reducing intergroup prejudice when the prejudice in question is deemed socially acceptable. Studies focused on two populations that are targets of socially acceptable, prejudice – people suffering from schizophrenia in the U.K., and homosexual men in Jamaica. These target groups were selected because they are similar in that they are both targets of socially acceptable prejudice, but also because of their differences in that the stereotypes associated with them are quite dissimilar. The first part of the thesis empirically tested the assumption that the aforementioned populations are targets of socially acceptable prejudice. Two cross-sectional studies, one of which was also cross-cultural, measured motivation to control prejudice against these target groups, and compared it to motivation to control prejudice against targets of socially unacceptable prejudice. I found that motivation to control prejudice against people with schizophrenia in the U.K. was lower than motivation to control prejudice against Black people in the U.K. Also, motivation to control prejudice against homosexual men was higher in the U.K. and the U.S.A. than in Jamaica, and differences in motivation to control unspecified prejudice were significantly smaller. The second part examined the association between actual contact and prejudice for both populations. Two cross-sectional studies, one of which was also cross-cultural, found that contact was associated with less prejudice. This effect was mediated by intergroup anxiety in all cases, and also by fear in the case of people with schizophrenia. Furthermore, I found that contact was more strongly negatively associated with anti-homosexual prejudice in Jamaica, where the prejudice is socially acceptable, than it was in Britain, where the prejudice is not socially acceptable. The third part tested the effect of imagined contact, a form of extended contact, on prejudice against people with schizophrenia. Four experimental studies demonstrated that imagined contact can be an effective means of reducing prejudice against this group. However imagined contact must be conducted in very specific ways, otherwise it has the potential to increase prejudice against people with schizophrenia.

Abstract:
Men who have sex with men (MSM) are a population disproportionately more afflicted by HIV infection. The high prevalence of infection among this population evidences the need to follow new behaviors, in which the use of mobile social networks is emphasized to accelerate the occasional sexual act. Thus, our study aimed to analyze the vulnerabilities of men who have sex with men, users of geossocial applications against HIV infection. For this, two sequential steps were performed: 1st - Integrative literature review and 2nd - Descriptive and exploratory study. The research obeyed the ethical guidelines on research with human beings, regulated by resolution 466/12 and approved by the Committee of Ethics and Research of the School of Nursing of Ribeirão Preto/USP (1.921.265/2017). The review was guided by the question: does using geossocial dating applications to find sexual partners increase the risk behavior for HIV infection by MSM? We searched the databases PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL and LILACS, considering primary studies published until December 2015, without time restrictions. The synthesized knowledge guided the structuring and interpretation of the next step. The exploratory study aimed to evaluate the knowledge of men who have sex with men using geolocation-based dating software, about HIV/aids and implications for establishing partnerships. Interviews were conducted with 30 Hornet® users recruited in the application using the Time-Location Sampling (TLS) technique. The statements generated had statistical treatment in the IRaMuTeQ software, later analyzed by the Descending Hierarchical Classification. The data collection was provided by the modified TLS virtual reality. The Computer-Assisted Interview (CASI) technique was used for data collection. The collection was performed by two properly trained researchers, who registered in the application to have access to the users and created a public profile. The first online users, who recorded the current HIV/aids serological status in their profile, were discussed. Application users have insufficient knowledge about HIV/aids prevention measures, especially when discarding the male condom. Sex with partners found through applications was characterized as casual, immediate, unprotected, associated with drug use, and without information about partners\' HIV status. The relationships established by the applications reveal new patterns of behavior and relationships, placing MSM in situations of high risk of HIV infection and different forms of protection, which may occur simultaneously

Abstract:

Currently, the main organizations and national, international documents related to health no longer regard the homosexuality as psychopathology, but as human possibilities of affective and sexual experience. With respect to gender identity, classification manuals of disease still diagnose transgender people like “gender dysphoria” which, while pathologizing trans experiences, also allows access to technological resources that help in the corporal transition. In Brazil, Federal Council of Psychology has positioned itself in relation to psychologists practice with LGBT public through two documents, the resolution 001/99, that set regulations for psychologists actuation with regard to sexual orientation issue and the “Technical Note about the transsexualizer process and others ways of assistance to transgender people”. Both documents advocate a psychological actuation that does not pathologize homosexuality and transsexuality, breaking with medical conception who still conceives the latter as a disorder. However, various psychologists and Christian politicians claimed the return of psychology to this actuation of “healing of homosexuality”, through draft bills that are intended to suspend the resolution 001/99. Therefore, it is possible to determine competing postures between the Council and part of psychology professionals, raising doubts about how the actuations have been conducted in relation to LGBT people. Thus, this work aims identify which conceptions and professional practices are developed by psychologistis from Juiz de Fora in face of resolution number 001/99 and the “Technical Note about the transsexualizer process and others ways of assistance to transgender people”, both regulations of the Federal Council of Psychology (CFP). The research was accomplished from a qualitative methodology with exploratory character. We carried out semi-structured interviews with psychologists from Juiz de Fora, which were transcribed and analyzed from Discourse Analysis, with foucauldian focus. It was possible to verify the coexistence of ethical and prejudiced practices by professionals. Although no psychologist has advocated explicitly the pathologization of LGBT experiences or the use of "curative" practices, discourses and practices persist (re)inventing forms of abjection, naturalizing heterosexuality and cisgenerity, and placing LGBT experiences in a position of inferiority.

Abstract:
This project looks at the ways in which masculine identities are constructed and perceived in secondary schools. It identifies some of the links between broader gender politics and the more specific area of masculinities as they apply to the lives of gay-identified and non-identified secondary school students. Through focussed discussion with groups of students the research describes types of behaviours that are characterised by students as desirable or undesirable and the perceived relationship of such behaviours with particular sexualities. In this thesis I interrogate the treatment (including bullying, harassment and lack of acknowledgment of the gay experience), in schools, of boys who express gender unorthodoxy/non-hegemonic masculinities. In order to understand this behaviour I look at the means of control of such expressions as exercised by other students and teachers and explore the motivation behind this control. Through listening to the stories of students I identify the need to evaluate school policy and pedagogical practices with a view to making the educational experience more inclusive of a broad range of masculinities and sexualities and therefore a more relevant, positive and productive one.

Sharp, Christine E. "Lesbian identity narratives: telling tales of a stigmatised identity." Thesis, View thesis, 2002. http://handle.uws.edu.au:8081/1959.7/560.

Abstract:
An individual’s identity is thought to accommodate and reflect his or her changing drives, abilities, beliefs, roles and obligations in an ever-changing environment, and a social or group identity is perceived as a contextually-bound aspect of this. When identity is stigmatised, expressions of identity are constrained by stigma management mechanisms, including group narratives. This study analyses the identity narratives of 64 lesbians as told to another lesbian, in particular referential, structural, interactional and functional aspects as well as a set of quantitative measures. While these lesbians experienced common life events, their narratives comprised a reflection of developmental tasks in one or more of 5 aspects of lesbian identity: lesbian sexual identity, transition to lesbian identity, stigma management, lesbian relationships and lesbian community involvement. The narratives were constrained by group interpretations: common “Lesbian Scripts’ and ‘Thematic Lines’ were identified which were correlated with identity factors. The inclusion of particular scripts and thematic lines in a lesbian’s narrative was associated with her level of identification as a lesbian, her level of commitment to her identity, her attitude to stigma and/or lesbianism, her age, and the number of years she has spent identifying as lesbian. The study concludes that the function of lesbian narrative includes demonstration of group membership, location within the group, demonstration of worthiness and morality, identity repair, and identity affirmation

Abstract:
This research on female homosexuality is two-fold: it discerns the principal issues in homosexuality; it also outlines its diversity by testing the hypothesis of a variability in the psychic organisations of lesbians. The point is to understand the modalities of a stabilised homosexuality in women well above teenage years. Covering all the psychic structures, this thesis adresses feminine perverse adjustments, thereby advancing the study of feminine sexuality in general. It also interrogates the feminine stakes in the practice of homosexuality in women. Same-sex female relationships could stem from various strategies to overcome feminine psychosexuality issues, in particular hatred and guilt. Masochism could be an additional building block, while integrating pulsions, to elaborate the feminine, which is in itself liable to generate destructive movements. How can the singularities in a woman's psychosexual development be approached in homosexuality? On which terms can the provide a solution? Is the sacrifice model relevant when considering lesbian relationships? These questions are addressed using the projective technique (Rorchach and TAT), and clinical interviews. The panel is made of 28 lesbian-identified women aged 25-45
