Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to develop an effective method for trailer loading horses based on the principles of positive reinforcement. Target training and shaping were used to teach trailer loading behavior in a natural setting. Five AQHA mares were selected for this program. All five had been loaded before through the use of punishment. A two-horse trailer was used. Approximations to loading and inappropriate behaviors were the dependent variables. When intervention started the target was moved to various locations inside the trailer. Subjects started training on the left side of the trailer. After a subject was loading in the left side they were moved to the right side, then to loading half on the right and half on the left, then they were loaded by a different trainer, and into a different trailer. For one subject a limited hold was utilized, as well as a companion horse.

Abstract:
The analysis of competitive state anxiety and its effect on sports performance has been undertaken by many researchers (Karteroliotis & Gill, 1987; Martens, Vealey, Burton, 1990; Jones, Swain & Hardy, 1993). This thesis focused on multidimensional competitive state anxiety and performance within the context of British Horse Society (BHS) one day horse trials. Initially, subjects (n=105) completed the Riders' Perceptions Questionnaire which was devised by the author to assess the nature of the interaction between the rider and horse during performance from the rider's perspective. Initial support for the rider and horse interaction was obtained and it was suggested that the rider's perceptions of the horse's performance must be taken into account when examining the anxiety experienced by the rider. Analysis of anxiety incorporated the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory - 2 (CSAT-2; Martens et al., 1990). Relationships between multidimensional anxiety, skill level, actual performance and perceived success were assessed. The results supported the view of multidimensional anxiety with psychological, physiological and behavioural components that change differently throughout the competition (Karteroliotis & Gill, 1987; Jones & Cale, 1989; Martens et al., 1990). Skill level was found to affect the level of anxiety experienced. Novice riders exhibited higher levels of cognitive and somatic anxiety and lower levels of self-confidence than Intermediate or Advanced riders. The effect of skill level in subsequent studies was similar in trend but the results were not significant. Within group variability was high, thus future assessment should assess anxiety levels utilising a more sensitive measure of skill level. Advanced riders were also found to perceive cognitive and somatic anxiety and self-confidence as more facilitative to performance than Intermediate or Novice riders. The assessment of the direction dimension of anxiety was particularly useful for the development of stress management programmes (Maynard, Hemmings & Warwick- Evans, 1995) and hence for the three collective case studies incorporated in the final stage of this thesis. The results provided evidence to support the current multidimensional anxiety theory within the sport of horse trials. Antecedents and causal attributions related to anxiety were measured. Perceived readiness, self-confidence and personal control were key factors affecting the performance and combating the negative effects of anxiety. Perceived readiness predicted performance. Further analysis of antecedents more specific to horse trials may help identify predictors of CSAI-2 components. Perceived success was associated with increases in self-confidence and was a significant predictor of performance in the next phase of the horse trial. Future research is encouraged into anxiety between phases of a competition to assess the effect of perceived success on future anxiety levels and performance more thoroughly. The final aim in this thesis was to assess the effectiveness of stress management intervention programmes via three collective case studies. The application of a stress management intervention programme (SMIP) was undertaken for each case study. Case study one is reported in detail whereas case studies two and three are summarised. Inter-case study comparisons were undertaken to assess the effectiveness of the SMIP. The SMIP's were effective in developing the rider's awareness of their psychological state, increasing self-confidence and enabling riders to employ coping skills successfully during a performance. Performance improvements occurred for each subject which also corresponded with an increased level of perceived success for each subject. The three collective case studies provided initial support for the usage of SMIP's for horse trials riders and hence supported the final aim in this thesis. The research has identified competitive state anxiety within horse trials in accordance with other sports (Martens et al., 1990). It is anticipated that the information will be used to aid riding instructors understand and predict the detrimental effects of anxiety for riders. The successful usage of SMIP techniques will provide valuable assistance for riders, coaches and BHS horse trials team selectors wishing to use stress management techniques for horse trials competition.

Abstract:

The relationship between horse and human has been one of mystery and deep fascination for ages, inspiring countless myths, works of art, dreams, and an entire other world of equine obsessed humans who center their lives around their horses. This research explores, through imaginal, embodied, narrative, and intuitive inquiry methods, the complexities of this trans-species relationship. The purpose of this embodied autoethnographic inquiry is to inspire a different way of imagining the individuation process as it occurs in the context of the horse-human relationship. Through this transformative process the authentic Self has the opportunity to evolve to a more integrated state of consciousness that is informed by the immersion in a trans-species engagement, which challenges human bias and anthropocentric psychological theory.

Questioning and re-imagining our ways of relating across species lines, the ego becomes the apprentice of an in-between realm that is created when horse and human engage. The integration of such trans-species experiences between horse and human challenges psychological constructs that are centered around individualism and anthropocentrism. A re-visioning of the psychological concept of dream animals, their purpose, symbolism, and autonomy are explored through a discussion of accounts of dreaming with horses, creating an interinforming reality between dreaming and waking worlds, and apprenticing the ego through dreaming experiences. Through the interfaces of horse and human, the body is awakened to a new way of being in the world and the deeply imbedded construct of dualistic modes of experiencing is challenged through the dismemberment of old ways of being. From this place of dismemberment, a new imagining of riding through an exploration of archetypal image and the deconstruction of popular assumption is reached, with careful consideration on behalf of Equus. Taking into consideration the fact that our lives are intricately interwoven with other than human species, this research calls for the integration of a trans-species ethic within depth psychology with the hope of re-conceptualizing the ultimate importance of a more harmonious human-animal relationship.

Abstract:
Consistent personality differences (e.g. shyness, sociability) among animals have been frequently reported by scientists. Such information used to be considered unscientific, even though it was widely used to describe animals and predict their behaviour (Hebb, 1946). Over the past three decades however animal personality has been studied systematically in various species (Gosling, 2001), using provided lists of descriptors, consistent with the five-factor model of personality (Costa & McCrea, 1992). Few researchers have allowed raters to produce their own list of descriptors (Dutton et al., 1997; Wemelsfelder et al., 2000), and none have investigated the potential influence of human individual differences on ratings. The three main goals of this thesis were (i) to develop in-depth personality profiles of domesticated horses, (ii) to investigate the effect of personal backgrounds and attitudes of observers in their construction of these profiles, and (iii) to provide insight into the reliability and validity of the provided assessments of horse personality. The thesis starts with a literature review of personality psychology, psychometrics, animal and horse personality; followed by the introduction of the concept of animal-as-a-scientist. As methodology is an important part of the project, the repertory grid technique (RGT) originally developed by Kelly (1955), was employed as a novel method to assess horse personality. This method gives observers the freedom to generate their own descriptors, which allows them to integrate the totality of their experience with animals into personality constructs which are meaningful to them. RGT has previously been used for personality assessment in chimpanzees (Dutton et al., 1997) and for the assessment of individual styles of interaction in pigs (Grajfoner et al., 2002). The experimental part of the thesis consists of two studies. In both, horse personality was assessed by groups of human participants, either familiar or unfamiliar with the horses. The familiar groups assessed the horses based on their past experiences. The unfamiliar groups watched short videos of horses interacting with a human. In the first study 44 female observers rated 21 horses from two stables. The results show a significant degree of agreement within the observer groups for 95% of horses. However, correlation of horse personality scores between the observer groups was not significant. The degree of agreement was higher when the observers were familiar not only with the horses but also with the descriptors (Adams-Weber, 1970). In the second study we further investigated the observed incongruity between familiar and unfamiliar observers. A novel object test was added to provide the unfamiliar observers with more information about the horses. Thirty four female observers rated 38 horses from three stables. Again, the degree of agreement was highly significant within the observer groups; however, correlation of the results between familiar and unfamiliar observers was only marginally improved. The degree of agreement was not consistently higher when the horses were rated on elicited constructs. Both studies showed that two personality dimensions, neuroticism and extroversion, are fairly robust in horses. The third dimension, agreeableness, was generated only by familiar observers. Contrary to expectations, observers’ personality, empathy or emotional intelligence did not significantly affect the degree of agreement or how they rated the horses’ personalities. Assessment of individual differences in horses using qualitative descriptors generated by the observers themselves is therefore not observers’ self projection. These results make a significant contribution to the debate on anthropomorphism. The overall degrees of agreement between the observers indicates consistent reliability of the RGT throughout the observer groups in both studies. Finally, the academic and practical implications of the study are discussed. On an academic level, individual differences in animals are of pivotal importance for understanding personality in the contexts of evolutionary, comparative and social psychology. On a practical level horses are, according to their individual differences, selectively used for different purposes: horse assisted therapy, racing and the police. Avenues for investigating the relationships between animal personality, performance and welfare should therefore be further explored.

Djur har historiskt haft en central roll i människans utveckling och behandling av ohälsa, och djurs hälso- och terapifrämjande egenskaper har de senaste decennierna börjat uppmärksammas. Med syfte att utröna hur hästar kan användas i terapeutiskt arbete intervjuades sex yrkesverksamma kvinnor på två behandlingshem med hästassisterad terapi (HAT) för tonårsflickor med psykosocial problematik. Därtill enkätintervjuades fyra kvinnor som genomgått HAT. Det framkom att hästar kan utgöra terapeutiska och kommunikativa verktyg som kringgår klientens försvarsmekanismer, reducerar det hotfulla i samtals-situationer samt underlättar koncentration och anknytning. Klienten upplever ett ömsesidigt förhållande med hästen, och meningsfullhet och kärlek. Det dis-kuteras att HAT effektivt kan komplettera redan etablerade behandlingsformer, samt att bredare acceptans av djurassisterade behandlingsmetoder tycks närmas genom ökad öppenhet och kunskap.

Horses have been an integral part of human history and progress for centuries. Horses and humans have united in diverse ways, including farming, war, construction, racing, and other areas of sports. Researchers have indicated that the use of horses for mental health and wellness is a growing trend that continues to lack strong, empirical evidence. Currently, there is limited research available on the experiences of certified equine specialists incorporating horses into mental health and wellness. It is essential to gain further insight into the incorporation of horses into psychology and counseling for therapists, as well as potential clients, interested in this form of alternative therapy. In this qualitative study, constructivism and phenomenology were used to explore the experiences of therapists using horses in therapy for mental health treatment and wellness. Purposeful sampling was used to recruit 8 therapists for semistructured interviews to gain an understanding of this phenomenon. Data analysis for this study was conducted through a phenomenological approach, thematic analysis, and a priori and emergent coding to identify 8 themes, activities, goals, and outcomes in using horses for mental health treatment and wellness, and insight into the use of horses for mental health and wellness. According to the American Horse Council, there are thousands of unwanted horses in the United States. Incorporating horses into psychology and counseling decreases the number of unwanted horses, as well as horse slaughter. Bringing horses and humans together promotes positive social change by giving both people and horses and new purpose.

Circadian rhythm is a type of endogenous clock that controls daily behavioral patterns in most organisms. Spiders have been shown to exhibit both circadian and non-circadian rhythms in their behaviors. This rhythmicity may allow spiders to cope with diel changes in environmental conditions. Both diurnal and nocturnal behavior have different sets of costs and benefits to a species’ survival. Achaearanea tepidariorum is one species in which potential circadian rhythmicity has never been studied. Due to its foraging behavior, it was predicted that its daily activity would be arrhythmic. We recorded the positions within the web of forty individuals throughout the day, and then observed their daily activity via use of an actogram apparatus. Analysis of the resulting actograms and web position data revealed a significant nocturnal periodicity in the spiders’ activity, as well as possible anticipation of the daily cycle. This nocturnal periodicity, coupled with specific web-building behavior, may be the result of this species balancing the costs and benefits of predation and foraging. More studies are needed to provide more information about the circadian behavioral patterns of A. tepidariorum.

The lives of humans and animals have been intertwined through time immemorial, and in many instances the relationship between humans and animals has been thought to be good for human well-being. As such, it is not surprising that treatments for a wide range of ailments, from physical to psychological, have developed that capitalize upon the relationship between humans and animals. While animal-assisted interventions have become popular in practice, the research-base of evidence to demonstrate the effectiveness of these approaches is limited. Research is needed to clarify the effectiveness of animal-assisted approaches using well-controlled and randomized samples, and to help shed light on the mechanisms of effectiveness for these techniques. While a variety of animals are used for psychotherapeutic intervention, horses are of particular interest because of the qualities that distinguish them from traditional household companion animals. The size, power, and sensitive nature of horses are thought by many to serve as a foundation for personal growth and psychological healing for humans. The current study evaluated the impact of equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP) versus traditional contact with horses on the depressive symptoms of five at-risk adolescents. Results suggest that structured contact with horses in either a horsemanship or EAP context may be both enjoyable, engaging, and beneficial for at-risk youth within the areas of depressive symptoms, social skills, and coping skills. Additional skills, such as persistence and problem-solving, may be uniquely impacted by EAP.

The purpose of this project is three fold:(a) a review of the literature regarding student ratings, (b) the creation of a student rating database and (c) the development of an applications manual to accompany the database. From a thorough review of the literature, this project identifies the utility and usefulness of student ratings as one element in the evaluation of instruction. The literature review addressed the following questions: (a) Do we need student ratings of instructors? (b) Can student rating data be used to improve instruction? (c) can we be sure that the data and the means by which they are acquired are valid and reliable? (d) Are there variables that may bias student ratings?, and (e) How can a database be used to help improve the effectiveness of classroom instruction? The second goal of this project was to established a student rating database designed to house data from past, present and future student ratings. The database contains variables currently collected by the student rating system of Western Kentucky University. In addition, the database contains variables identified by the research as helpful in the interpretation of rating data. Lastly, a database applications manual (see Appendix) was developed which provides the user step-by-step directions for program access, data entry, data storage, and data retrieval/export.

Abstract:

This dissertation is theoretical study of horse-human relationship, addressing the topics of communication, learning and cognition in the context of the cybersemiotic model developed by philosopher of science Søren Brier. This study found significant gaps in the literature with respect to how horses and humans communicate and learn together, and is an attempt to develop an integral conceptual model grounded in communication and learning theory.

The overarching theoretical platform is the cybersemiotic model, which is a transdisciplinary research platform that addresses knowledge creation from an objective and subjective vision of reality. The center of knowledge in this model is semiosis, the sign system and spheres of signification through which living beings create meaning and make sense of the world. The cybersemiotic model is inclusive of non-human languaging systems, grounded in the biosemiotic view that extends sign systems to the life world of animals. The analysis of horse-human communication is performed using Bateson's theories of non-verbal communication and learning, based on the second-order cybernetic science view. Likewise, the topic of the role of inner life and consciousness in horse-human interaction is analyzed through the phenomenological, pragmaticist philosophy of Charles Sanders Peirce and his triadic conception of semiosis.

The results of this theoretical and philosophical exploration point to the need to begin constructing serious, scientifically grounded conceptual frames that can inform equestrian activities across a wide variety of disciplines such as competition and entertainment, leisure, horse training, and equine-facilitated psychotherapy/learning (EFP/L). These disciplines are fairly divided in their view of horses, especially when it comes to communication protocols, equine intelligence, and the use of a shared language to describe horse-human interaction.

Besides starting to lay theoretical groundwork for conceptualizing how horses and humans communicate and learn together, this dissertation also addresses the fundamental issue of personal safety and ethics in horse communities. The horse industry is a billion dollar industry in the U.S. and other Western nations, with most horses living in captivity in human-controlled environments. As the horse industry grows, so do the number of related accidents, making equestrian sports one of the most dangerous. An understanding of ethologically grounded communication principles is essential in ensuring greater safety for horse handlers and the wellbeing of horses. It is also key in addressing the larger question of ethics in the relationships of humans to non-human others and the ecology of the Earth at large.

The purpose of the current study is to evaluate a procedure that can be used to introduce horses to clipping. Negative reinforcement was used in a shaping paradigm. Shaping steps were conducted by the handler, starting with touching the horse with the hand, then touching the horse with the clippers while they are off, culminating with touching the horse with the clippers while they are on. When a horse broke contact with either the hand or the clippers, the hand or the clippers were held at that point until the horse emitted an appropriate response. When the horse emitted an appropriate response, the clippers were removed, and the handler stepped away from the horse. For all eight horses, this shaping plan was effective in enabling the clipping of each horse with minimal inappropriate behavior and without additional restraint. The entire process took under an hour for each horse.

This thesis proposes a framework to model intervention in education systems using technology: the Learning Atmosphere. The motivation is to show that innovative learning with expressive technologies can happen even in economically disadvantaged regions, such as public education systems in Brazil, where our case studies took place. The contribution of the thesis is to explore ways in which mutual enrichment can be achieved through collective displacements of habits and mindsets taken for granted. The case studies demonstrate the importance and possibility of a powerful learning experience that builds up from the local culture and expertise, elements often disregarded in schools. Technology plays a central role, enabling diverse and innovative ways of working, expressing and building. In addition, it makes possible epistemological diversity, empowering of students and fulfillment to teachers, reinforcing the community's own livelihood. The core elements within the Learning Atmosphere are: -- Enhance the concept of generative themes using technology. -- Mix and match expressive media, especially low-cost technologies. -- Invest on relationship building and challenge established power relations. The legend of the Trojan Horse has the important role of warning us against the easy way into schools, the trivialization of ideas and the superficial experiences that do not change the praxis and mindsets in schools.

While there are established traditional interventions to help develop language and social skills in young people with autism (Anderson, 2016; White, Oswald, Ollendick & Scahill, 2009), empirical support for interventions to help with behavioural, social and emotional skills in adolescents with autism are less well supported (Williams-White, 2007). Less orthodox interventions can include Equine Assisted therapy (Borgi, Loliva, Cerino, Chiarotti, Venerosi, Bramini, Nonnis, Marcelli, Vinit, Santis, Bisacco, Fagerlie, Frascarelli, & Cirulli, 2016). In this small-scale study, Equine Assisted therapy was defined as the deliberate inclusion of a horse in a treatment plan, as recommended by (Endenburg & van Lith, 2011). This study explored perceptions of Equine Assisted therapy with three different groups; adolescent participants, staff from the school, and the therapists who designed and delivered the intervention. Using Thematic Analysis, fourteen participants were interviewed on an individual basis. Themes were created from the data on an individual, group and whole data-set basis. The global themes regarding this particular Equine Assisted therapy were that rather than providing clinical, within-child interventions, the therapy worked via the context of a group. The Equine Assisted therapy gave a context for experiential learning; it promoted emotional regulation, and it enhanced emotional wellbeing. Instead of asking why the benefits of such therapy do not necessarily extend to other settings, the researcher poses the question of how it might be possible to apply points made about Equine Assisted therapy to school -based, and general life experiences. The aim of this research was to account for the meaning practitioners and clients gave to Guided Human Equine Interactions (GHEI). GHEI is a term that covers a range of interactions between human and horse for the purpose of facilitating emotional and social development in the human participants. There is paucity of research to evidence assumptions inherent in practice and little is known about the meaning participants give to GHEI. Despite this, practice is rapidly expanding in Britain following similar growth in America where GHEI originated. An underlying premise in this thesis is that the discourses employed to account for equine involvement in therapy and learning will construct practice. Therefore, language samples were obtained from interviews with ten GHEI practitioners, two GHEI websites, and from the personal experience of one client through their diary entries. The data were interrogated, analysed and interpreted according to a discursive strategy based on work by Ballinger and Cheek (2006). Five dominant discourses (metaphysical, sensory, social, mental distress and symbolic) were surfaced across three studies. These discourses served differing functions and woven together, formed a discursive framework that accounted for the meaning practitioners and clients gave to GHEI. This incorporated not only the cognitive, affective and behavioural elements seen in mental health interventions such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), but also included the added dimensions of spiritual, sensory and symbolic meaning. These added factors provided for a more holistic experience for the client than office based therapy alone. The insights gained suggest the horse has an impact, not only on the spatial distancing between the client and practitioner, but also on their relational distancing. This distancing enables the client to be positioned as the expert at the centre of the intervention. However, expert client positioning was only apparent as long as the practitioner did not draw on a dominant mental distress discourse, or tried to market GHEI. There was a lack of risk discourse across all studies, which was considered an important added factor in positioning the client as expert. Spatial and relational distancing may assist GHEI practitioners in being alongside individuals who decline to engage in more formal interventions It was noted that adaptation had taken place in the discursive construction of GHEI from practice developed in America. This had led to culturally relevant practice being accounted for in Britain. It was concluded that the inclusion of a horse in therapeutic and learning practice is at an intersection between past discourses where the metaphysical, such as spirit and healing, were privileged and contemporary discourses where social care and treatment of mental illness are authoritative. There is a symbiotic relationship between the function of the horse in accounting for the meaning given to GHEI and the function of dominant discourses. This results in a centaur-like enmeshment of human and horse.

One of the most meaningful duties of poetry is to examine small moments in life—the fleeting, the transitory, the quotidian—and make them sacred. Its title derived from a conflation of the colloquialism “Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades,” Horse Grenade is concerned with questions of identity and proximity—physical, mental, and emotional—which weave themselves throughout my work. I am intrigued by the fluctuating correlation between spiritual closeness and temporal distance, the way it defies definition and logic. In an effort to address this phenomenon, I immerse the reader into foreign cultures and the frequently extreme circumstances of everyday life. In doing so, I seek invention, but also return to familial relationships and personal experience, ranging from rediscovering my heritage to my father breaking into nuclear power plants. My intention as a poet is to make honest and unique observations, developing them into a deeper understanding.

Persons with mental illness struggle daily to overcome their illnesses that relentlessly attack the mind. In efforts to revolutionize mental health treatment, psychologists and doctors have attempted to go beyond symptom reduction. One such method is the Clubhouse Model of psychosocial rehabilitation that welcomes persons with severe mental illness into a socially supportive environment and involves them in meaningful and productive work (Doyle, Lanoil & Dudek, 2013). The Clubhouse Model works: its members report greater feelings of functionality, autonomy, and happiness (Tanaka & Davidson, 2015). However, it is not yet clear how exactly the Clubhouse Model is so effective. The current proposed study will apply the psychology phenomena of flow (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990) to the Clubhouse Model’s core structure, its work-ordered day. This proposed study will collect data on Clubhouse members’ experience in three activities: the work-ordered day, free time, and therapy to determine if they are ever in a state of flow. The proposal will collect the data over a six-month period using the Experience Sampling Method (Hektner, Schmidt & Csikszentmihalyi, 2007). Additionally, the proposal will collect longitudinal data of the members’ quality of life (QoL) to determine if members’ QoL increase due to their Clubhouse membership. The proposal’s first hypothesis is that members will experience greater levels of flow during the activities of the work-ordered day over their free time and therapy. The proposal’s second hypothesis is that by experiencing flow, Clubhouse members will experience greater levels of QoL.

Most horse training methods heavily rely on negative reinforcement and punishment. However, there is a movement in the horse community to utilize positive reinforcement to meet training goals. Although food has been used effective as a reinforcer with horses, social interaction has also been demonstrated to function as a positive reinforcer for animals. Utilizing social interaction as a reinforcer may lead to several benefits for both the trainer and animal. Some of the benefits can be improved relationships between animals and their caretakers and improved animal welfare. The purpose of this study was to apply Owens and Owens et al. previous research protocols to three equines to assess if social interaction, in the form of petting and gentle scratching, would function as a reinforcer. Using a changing criterion design, this study demonstrated that petting and gentle scratching could function as a reinforcer to teach three equines to stay and come in their natural environment.

The downtime is a combination of homesickness, RPGs, and mortar fire. These men suffer through the war, heat, and each other. These stories look into the fire-fights and their aftermath to get to soldiers' struggles within themselves: how to fight a faceless enemy, what it means to serve, how one soldiers, what makes a man, what makes a good man, what will it mean to die here, and what does it mean not to. Depuis la publication des Œuvres de Fernand Deligny en 2007, nous assistons à une redécouverte de cet auteur et de son œuvre. Pendant plus de cinquante ans, Deligny a travaillé avec à des enfants et des jeunes en marge, considérés par les milieux médicaux, sociaux et juridiques comme « inadaptés ». L'objectif de cette thèse est de reconstituer les différentes expériences pratiques développées par Deligny et de systématiser sa pensée. Cette tâche est devenue possible grâce à une vision globale de son œuvre et au travail d’organisation de ses archives que nous avons entrepris au cours de cette recherche. Nous proposons ainsi d’exposer comment la pensée de Deligny s’est précisée au fil des décennies et notamment à partir de sa rencontre avec des enfants autistes mutiques. À partir de 1967, Deligny et d’autres personnes s’installent dans les Cévennes afin de créer un réseau de lieux de prise en charge d’enfants autistes. Sans qu'ils aient à proprement parler une visée thérapeutique et rééducative, ils développent toutefois une série de dispositifs d’ordre à la fois clinique, esthétique et anthropologique. Nous proposons d’analyser en détail ces différents dispositifs – l’écriture, la cartographie et le tournage de films – afin de comprendre la pratique quotidienne développée pour vivre avec les enfants autistes. Nous proposons ensuite de voir comment ces pratiques n'ont cessé d'être habitées par une recherche, à partir de laquelle Deligny a pu construire une réflexion philosophique très particulière. Since Fernand Deligny’s Works were published in 2007, a rediscovery of this author and his work is taking place. During more than fifty years Deligny worked with children and young people living in the fringes of the society, individuals considered socially maladjusted by the medical, social and juridical institutions. This dissertation aims to reconstitute Deligny’s multiple practical experiences and to systematize his thinking. This task is possible on the basis of a global vision of his work and of the extensive archival work done during this research. We propose to expose how Deligny’s thinking became more precise in the course of these decades and especially after his encounter with mute autistic children. After 1967, Deligny and others settled in Cevennes where they created a network of living places for these children. Without aiming to establish a therapeutic or rehabilitative milieu, they developed an apparatus having a clinical, aesthetic and anthropologic dimension. We propose a detailed analysis of this apparatus, which includes the writing, the cartography and the shooting of films, in order to grasp the approach chosen by Deligny to live with these children. Furthermore, we propose to see how research was continually undertaken within these practices. Thus Deligny was capable of building a very particular philosophical thinking. This thinking, based on the concept of the “human” and a radical critique of every form of humanism, is at the same time very singular and very connected to a large contemporary debate in the anthropologic, psychoanalytic and French philosophic fields

This essay aims to show how anthropomorphism, and also to some extent zoomorphism, is created in Nicholas Evans’s novel The Horse Whisperer.  Through parallel events and the usage of the concepts horse whisperers and horse whispering, a special connection is created between Grace, the main human character, and Pilgrim, the main horse character. This essay argues that their connection grounds for the reader to see the horse anthropomorphically and the human to some extent zoomorphically. With the use of Daston and Mitman’s notions of anthropomorphism and zoomorphism, this essay analyses how the concepts manifest themselves in the novel. The definition of horse whisperers and horse whisperering within this essay derives from the work of Brannaman and Parelli, this due to their theoretical value and knowledge about horse whispering.

The education of hospital doctors has been criticised because of its large service commitment and poor educational structure, and this particularly applies to the hospital Senior House Officer (SHO) component of general practice vocational training. This study set out to assess the effect of local interventions to improve SHO education. This required the design and application of a system to assess SHO educational posts, a classification of interventions and the use of a local research cycle to determine the effect of interventions applied. The study involved 80 doctors training for general practice, working in 137 SHO posts, at two district general hospitals in Southern England between 1993 and 1999. Established principles of the action research cycle were applied. These linked quantitative and qualitative research on the local problems in SHO education, with design of interventions to resolve these problems, the action of applying an intervention and then further research to determine if the problems had resolved. Quantitative research involved the design, piloting and assessment of an SHO Educational Audit Project (SEAP) questionnaire applied sixmonthly.qualitative methods involved monthly focus groups, interviews and a field diary. Interventions included letters, feedback, facilitated group discussion, interviews, and external visits. Changes were seen in rates of appraisal, teaching, attendance, and contact with GP mentors. An intervention to increase the amount of induction to SHO posts was ineffective. The number of completed action research cycles applied (seven) and duration of the study (six years) exceeded those seen within the existing literature on action research. This study was also the first description of action research in the setting of medical education for SHOs. It was concluded that the action research cycle was a framework in which acknowledged research methods were placed and should not be seen as a method in its own right. The action research cycle links the disciplines of research, learning theory and organizational development. It is a cycle that can contribute to the individual learning of a professional because it gathers evidence of change using research methods rather than intuition and an assumption of change. Action research can be seen as an improved model for professional learning because it provides focused information and feedback. A model for future general practice training at SHO level was also identified from the study results. This was an "elective" style period where the doctor selected several specialities to work within an outpatient or community setting. The model included induction, appraisal and day-to-day supervision, along with regular contact with general practice and the general practice trainer. Other theory generated by this study related to thresholds for behaviour change, achieving enduring change, the three components that contribute to change (setting, intervention and follow up), the types of educational supervisor and an apprentice cycle for learning. The system for assessing the standards of SHO education, the range of interventions and the action research model used in this study are applicable to other similar settings. The outcomes in other settings will depend on local circumstances and have to be determined by further local research with an action research framework. Since completion of this study, new posts for GP education have been piloted and financed by the Director of Postgraduate General Practice Education throughout the Wessex region. Course organisers specifically for SHO education have been appointed for every vocational training scheme in Wessex and have been able to apply the principles of action research using the monitoring system outlined in this study.

Building offerings, artefacts or bones that had been placed under or within house features, are considered evidence of rites associated with house construction, remodelling or abandonment, and are an archaeological phenomenon that was common throughout European prehistory. This dissertation focuses on interpreting building offerings dating to the Viking Age in Iceland and Scotland. Each find of this type is unique, which poses a challenge for archaeological investigations that often lack the interpretive framework needed to make comparisons between sites. This dissertation critically refines the frameworks of previous studies of similar types of deposits in AngloSaxon Britain and Scandinavia in order to fill this gap in research and discuss the purpose of houserites. The frameworks of behavioural and cognitive archaeology indicate that the performance of house-rites played a role in the construction of the house as the centre of the world-view of Vikingage people. House-rites are situated as prescriptive behaviours that negotiated perspectives of space throughout the residential life-cycle by adding to house materiality. This refined interpretive paradigm is then applied to a comparative survey of Viking-age houses and farmsteads from Iceland and Scotland. In the North Atlantic region, house-rites appear to have been performed in order for Norse people to reimagine their place in the world. The practical elements of the tradition were altered based on the relevant cultural frameworks and specific geo-political contexts to which Norse people were migrating in the Viking Age. In Iceland, people utilised displays of generosity and skills as providers during house-rites to construct an association between social relationships and residential space. The house itself had agency in situating people both within the landscape and the community. In Norse settlements in Scotland, Scandinavian people were relating themselves directly to the symbols used by native peoples through the use of personal objects in the performance of houserites, integrating their new environment into their mentalities. In Scandinavia, house-rites were a long-standing tradition, leading to a well-established, carefully negotiated sense of identity within the landscape. The Norse people who migrated into the North Atlantic region during the Viking Age were leaving this well-established sense of place. This intensified the climate of uncertainty regarding their place in the world, leading to the negotiation of mentalities through the discursive dynamics of house-rites in altered contexts.

This dissertation reports on a study conducted to examine the morphological, behavioral, and environmental sources of variation in the structure of house cricket, Acheta domesticus, calling song. Song variations may be important in female mating decisions and influence male mating success. Eleven song parameters were measured: chirp duration, interchirp duration, syllable number, syllable duration, intersyllable duration, mean frequency, frequency intensity, minimum frequency, maximum frequency, syllable intensity, and intensity difference between syllable and frequency intensity. Morphological factors examined included body: mass, length, color, asymmetry, intactness; and male age. Behavioral factors were timing of song bouts and proclivity to sing. Environmental conditions of high population densities were simulated by temporarily placing males into an arena with three other males. The calling song structure of tactilely isolated males resulted in three factors: frequency (mean, minimum, and maximum frequencies); intensity (syllable intensity, and intensity difference); and variability (difference between syllable intensity and frequency intensity). Males with high body intactness sang at lower frequencies. Asymmetrical males sang more intense songs. Large males sang with more intensity and frequency variability. Intermale competitions resulted in distinguishable linear dominance hierarchies. Lower-ranking males sang less often than higher-ranking males, altered singing times, and sang quieter songs. Intermale competition resulted in males altering song structure. Analysis of post-competitive songs resulted in three factors: frequency (mean and maximum frequencies, and intensity difference); energy (duty-cycle, intensity, and minimum frequency) and variability (unchanged). Higher-ranking asymmetrical males sang at lower frequencies. Higher-ranking males sang with greater energy, and timed their singing to female receptive times. Higher-ranking, large, intact males sang with less variability. This study indicated that A. domesticus males signal phenotypic information via their calling song characteristics. More specifically, in low population densities males signal information concerning their fitness-related qualities. After having established dominance orders, the male signal information concerning their rank in conjunction with fitness. The implications of this study were that intermale competition altered the song cues available to the females and may alter female mating decisions.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis examines the psychological and social reasons for recidivism among women offenders of the law and explores the impact halfway houses could have on reducing recidivism in SA. Despite the problem of high crime and offender recidivism in SA there is a lack of research into projects within the country that are attempting to address the situation. This paper ascribes to be an authentic voice from one who has had the unique opportunity of observing the SA prison system from within, over a period of 15 years, and one who has sought to assist ex-offenders in their reintegration from prison to society by providing support once outside of prison over the past 10 years. The thesis is auto-ethnographic in design and method. This research examines the reasons for criminal acts among women and seeks to investigate and determine the unique complexities surrounding women and crime. A high prevalence of sexual and physical abuse is corroborated as common precursors to conduct problems in female offenders, while mental ill health is found to be marked among women in prison. Recommendations are made for the establishment of halfway houses in SA and strategies are suggested for the development of such halfway houses.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie verhandeling ondersoek die sielkundige en sosiale redes vir residivisme onder vroue oortreders van die wet en ondersoek die impak wat halfweghuise kan hê op die vermindering van residivisme in Suid-Afrika. Ten spyte van die probleem van hoë misdaad en residivisme in Suid-Afrika is daar nie baie geskryf oor projekte in die land wat probeer om die situasie aan te spreek nie. Hierdie verhandeeling is geskryf om 'n outentieke stem te wees van ‘n persoon wat ‘n unieke geleentheid het om die Suid-Afrikaanse gevangenis stelsel van binne af te sien oor 'n tydperk van 15 jaar, en wat poog om die probleem wat ex-oortreders vind met herintegrasie uit die tronk deur middel van ondersteuning buite die tronk vir die afgelope 10 jaar. Die verhandeling is outo-etnografies in ontwerp en metode. Hierdie tesis neem die redes in ag van kriminele dade onder vroue en poog om die unieke kompleksiteit rondom vroue en misdaad te ondersoek. Die navorsing staaf 'n hoë voorkoms van seksuele en fisiese mishandeling as 'n gemeenskaplike voorloper probleem in vroulike oortreders. Geestesgesondheid is waar geneem onder vroue in die tronk. Die idee van halfweghuise in die Suid-Afrikaanse gemeenskap is op die been gebring. Die artikel stel verder strategie vir die ontwikkeling van die halfweghuise in Suid-Afrika voor.

Abstract:
Our ability to map and sequence whole genomes is one of the most important developments in biological science. It will provide us with an unprecedented insight into the genetic background of phenotypic traits, such as disease resistance, reproduction and growth and also makes it feasible to study the processes of genome evolution. The main focus of this thesis has been to develop a linkage map of the horse (Equus caballus) genome. A secondary aim was to expand the number of physically mapped genes in the horse, allowing comparative analyses with data from the human genome map. Finally, attempts were made to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on the horse Y chromosome. The development of a genome map relies on the information generated by both linkage and cytogenetical studies. To integrate genetical and physical assignments in the very early phase of equine genome map construction, 19 polymorphic microsatellite markers were isolated from lambda phage clones which, in parallel, were physically assigned to chromosomes by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). The microsatellites were simultaneously mapped by linkage analysis in a Swedish reference pedigree. A first primary male autosomal linkage map of the domestic horse was constructed by segregation analysis of 140 genetic markers within eight half-sib families with, in total, 263 offspring. One hundred markers were arranged into 25 linkage groups, 22 of which could be assigned physically to 18 different chromosomes. The total map distance contained within linkage groups was 679 cM. The presented map provides an important framework for future genome mapping in the horse. Our contribution to the comparative horse genome map, was the presentation of map data for 12 novel genes using FISH and somatic cell hybrid mapping. AD chromosomal assignments except one were in agreement with human-horse Zoo-FISH data. The exception concerned the CLU gene which was mapped by synteny to ECA2 while human-horse Zoo-FISH data predicted that it would be located on ECA9. The level of SNPs on the horse Y chromosome was also investigated by DNA sequencing and denaturing high performance liquid chromatography (DHPLC) of Y chromosome-specific fragments derived mainly from BAC clone subcloning. The amount of genetic variability was found to be very low, consistent with low male effective population size.

Abstract:
The domestication of horses took place at least 2000 BCE. Since then, horses have been used for transportation, agricultural work and even for warfare. Today, horses have been bred into world athletes, used worldwide in equestrian sports. However, these explosive performance horses present characteristics that make them prone to injuries leading to lameness. According to the insurance company Agria, more than 50 % of all reported injuries on horses in Sweden each year, are related to lameness. Using more objective analysing methods can lead to earlier detection and decrease the occurrence of this kind of injuries. In this Master’s degree project, a horse sensor system was proposed, designed and manufactured as a first prototype. The system consists of a force measuring device and an external reader. The force measuring sensor itself is a piezoelectric printed sensor. The force measuring device senses, acquires and transmits the raw data to the external reader. The focus of this project was on the hardware- and software development of the force measuring device and the software development for the external reader. To develop and verify the algorithms, as well as the entire system concept, the CC1352R1 Launchpad from Texas Instruments was used. The first results have indicated that the developed hardware and software of the force measuring device performs as expected. Also, important conclusions were drawn for both the force measuring device and the external reader. E.g., the force measuring device should fit the required physical dimension of the hoof sole, and the algorithms of the external reader should be improved in terms of data flow and memory usage. To conclude, the project is a challenging application making use of modern wireless sensor technology and printed electronics.
