Group interviewing, the topic of investigation in this thesis, has been neglected within the deception detection literature. Chapter 1 introduces the topic, and emphasises the importance of studying collective interviewing (whereby pairs are interviewed simultaneously) in a deception context. Chapter 2 explores the nature of deceit occurring within pairs in a police-style interview setting. Truth-telling pairs had lunch together, whilst lying pairs committed a mock crime. All pairs then had to convince an interviewer they were having lunch together. The interview protocol involved repeated que

Joyful expressions of one-year-old infants were studied in naturalistic contexts in infants’ home environments. Chimpanzee infants (n = 7) and human infants from the Cameroon Nso community (n = 8) were studied in their own right and in comparison. Similar methodologies and the development of a single coding scheme allowed direct comparisons between the groups. The research aims to contribute to knowledge about 1) emotion socialisation; 2) the whole-body expression of emotions in infancy; 3) the evolutionary heritage of emotions; and 4) the functions of joyful emotions. The over-arching aim of this thesis was to evaluate a new experimental approach to detect recognition memory in liars, when recognition of familiar photographs was intentionally concealed. Eye tracking was selected as a novel methodological approach to memory detection because previous eye movement research documented that recognition of familiar faces and scenes produced fewer fixations to fewer regions of longer durations. The effect of deception on fixation-based measures of memory was examined in four experimental chapters. Experiment 1 explored whether fixations exposed concealed person r

Relatively little is known about the strategies that people use when monitoring and interpreting (criminal) events observed in CCTV footage. Four studies reported in this thesis used a change blindness task to explore: (a) whether instructions and/or event type influence where people attend to during CCTV observation; (b) how factors such as task instructions and central and marginal information influence fixation behaviour during CCTV observation; (c) the effect of change detection on memory recall during CCTV observation; and (d) whether verbalisation, attentional set and/or repeated viewing

Background: In general, the shortage of organs and tissues for donation reflects not only the rise in the number of patients in need of transplants, but also the failure to acquire sufficient donors. A variety of factors is responsible for this shortage, including poor public awareness and insufficient knowledge, religious perceptions of potential donors and families, and the failure of healthcare staff to identify potential donors. Because of their close relationships with potential donors and families, nurses are vitally important in the donation process. The hospital nursing population in I

Complementary feeding is the process of adding additional foods and nutrients to an infant’s milk diet. Advice about the when, the what and the how of introducing complementary foods to infants, varies across European countries, and very little is known about its actual practice. Therefore, the main aim of this thesis was to explore the introduction of complementary foods in two European countries - Italy and the UK - with very different attitudes towards foods, as well as different health care systems. If you are someone affected by severe mental illness your personal identity may be invalidated as an inpatient on a psychiatric ward (Goffman, 1961; Rosenhan, 1973). This can also happen, however, and frequently does, in community psychiatric contexts such as outpatient settings and day services where one would expect a more personal approach to support. My dissertation presents a combination of four qualitative research studies, alongside theoretical analysis, to support this thesis and offer some alternative reflections on how we might reconceptualise community psychiatric services. Comparative research into animal communication has been and continues to be highly informative regarding the general principles underlying the evolution of communication (including human communication). However, our tendency to focus on specific modes of production of these signals (i.e. facial expressions, gestures or vocalisations) in isolation of each other, and in a limited number of species, may be obstructing our progress. Therefore, in this thesis, I adopted a novel and more comprehensive approach to a highly understudied primate, the crested macaques (Macaca nigra). First, I consider t

This thesis aims to examine whether undercover and collective interviewing can elicit cues to deceit. Undercover interviewing is when the suspect is not explicitly informed that they are being interviewed, and collective interviewing involves one interviewer interviewing multiple suspects. Findings indicate significant verbal differences in truth tellers’ and liars’ responses. Experiment 2 is a lie detection study, which is carried out i

Cooperation and joint actions are often investigated in terms of how individuals explicitly coordinate their plans and intentions to achieve a shared goal. However, goals may also be achieved without prior arrangements, when, for instance, an individual takes part in someone else’s action without an explicit agreement, helping that action to be performed. Participating in social interaction may be considered as a basic form of cooperation that does not always require verbal communication or the ability to predict the other’s intentions. Rather, it is based on daily experiences of interacting a
