Kwan, Tinna. "Psychometric properties of the Draw-A-Person Test." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/277147.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examined the psychometric properties for the Draw-A-Person (DAP) test (Naglieri, 1988). Data were collected from 191 children following the accepted procedure from an earlier study (Badger & Jones, 1988). Drawings were scored using both Harris' (1963) and Naglieri's (1988) scoring systems following the procedures outlined in the manuals. Basically, the DAP test demonstrated reliable and valid properties. The Naglieri's (1988) scoring system was favored in this study because it demonstrated more consistent internal consistency, higher inter- and intra-rater reliability and satisfactory construct validity. Positive and moderate high correlations with the scores obtained from Goodenough-Harris's scoring systems supported that the Naglieri's version measured the same concept as the old system. Psychometric properties of the DAP test support use in clinical and research settings to gather data from children about their general abilities.

Abstract:

Schools are increasingly held accountable for student academic and behavioral performance, and showing efficacy of these treatment efforts. The primary metric for reporting academic progress, state endorsed standardized tests, does not take into account or effectively measure discrete skills or behavioral improvement. This necessitates the development of tools efficient in quantifying students’ school-based behaviors. Mental health practitioners achieve this metric utilizing the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF). The Global Assessment of School Functioning (GASF) is being developed to be an efficient scale used by teachers for similar means. The aim of the present study is to examine the utility of the GASF in capturing overall school functioning. This study was broken into two phases. Teacher consultants assessed content validity and validated vignettes that would be used to assess inter-rater reliability. School personnel then rated five vignettes using the GASF and responded to questions regarding their perceptions of the instrument. Correlational statistics suggested that school personnel were able to rate vignettes with substantial reliability (.877). Responses to questions relating to the raters competency and training and the raters overall impressions of the technical quality of the GASF were positive. The culminating analysis from the data presented in this study suggest that the GASF warrants further study to determine its technical properties and utility as a rating scale that school personnel can use to benchmark and progress monitor student behavior.

Tecle, Hagos Ghebremicael. "The psychometric properties of the Paper and Pencil Games Level 2 for Tigrigna-speaking children in Eritrea." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/53666.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2003.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to investigate the psychometric properties of a screening test of cognitive ability, the Paper and Pencil Games Level 2 (PPG Level 2), for Tigrignaspeaking schoolchildren in Eritrea. This study represents one of the first attempts to measure cognitive ability in Eritrea. The PPG was developed in South Africa (Claassen, 1996) as a group test of general cognitive ability for children in Grade 2 and 3 (PPG Level 2), and Grade 4 and 5 (PPG Level 3). The PPG provides Total, Verbal and Nonverbal ability scores. The Verbal Scale consists of two subtests, namely (a) Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning and (b) Comprehension. The Non-verbal Scale consists of three subtests, namely (a) Figure Classification, (b) Figure Series, and (c) Pattern Completion. Although the PPG has the appearance of a standardized intelligence test, Claassen emphasized that it is best used as a screen for academic difficulties or failures. Participants were 577 Tigrigria-speaking Grade 3 children. The children were selected from schools in the capital, Asmara, from small towns, and villages. Eleven schools participated. The participants can be considered representative of the Grade 3 Tigrignaspeaking population in Eritrea. The PPG Level 2 was completed under supervision of the researcher. Classical and Rasch item analyses were conducted on the Verbal and Non-verbal Scales, respectively. The internal consistency of the Non-verbal scale can be considered satisfactory for a screening instrument (Cronbach's a = .85). Furthermore, the non-verbal items showed satisfactory fit to the Rasch model (INFIT values and OUTFIT values < 1.3 for all items), suggesting that they measure a unidimensional construct. In addition, the item difficulty estimates corresponded well with the serial order of the items, with easy items being presented earlier than more difficult items. The internal consistency of the Verbal scale was lower (Cronbach's a = .72), which can probably be attributed to the relative easiness of the items for the particular group of participants. The verbal items also showed satisfactory fit to the Rasch model. The Rasch analysis, which expresses person ability and item difficulty on the same scale, clearly showed that the Verbal items were too easy for the majority of the children. However, it should be kept in mind that the PPG is intended to discriminate among children with low ability. Hence, the observed mismatch between the abilities and item difficulties was not unexpected. It should also be noted that the serial order of the items did not correspond well with item difficulty, with some difficult items being presented early and some easy items presented late in the scale. The five subtests of the PPG were subjected to a confirmatory factor analysis. Two models were specified and compared. Model 1 specified a single general factor; this provided a more parsimonious description of the data and showed a satisfactory fit with the data, though a bit weaker than that of Model 2. Model 2 specified two correlated factors, namely a Verbal and a Non-verbal factor. Model 2 also fitted the data well, but a high correlation between the factors was observed (r = .77; r2 = .59), suggesting the presence of a general factor. The results provide support for two levels of interpretation, namely on the Total score level and the Verbal and Non-verbal level. The validity of the PPG Level 2 was further investigated by examining the correlations between the PPG scores and teacher ratings of academic achievement. Because different schools had different raters, the correlations within each of the schools were pooled to obtain an estimate of the correlations between the PPG scales and academic achievement for the total group. The pooled correlation for the PPG Total score with academic achievement was .56, for the Non-Verbal score .53, and for the Verbal score .41. The correlations for the Total and Non-verbal scores are similar to those typically reported in the educational psychology literature and provide support for the validity of these scales as a screen for academic difficulties. The results show that the PPG, which was developed in South Africa, may be fruitfully exported to Eritrea. It is recommended, however, that before the PPG Level 2 is routinely used for screening purposes with Tigrigna-speaking children, the functioning of the Verbal Scale should be re-examined and possibly some of the Verbal items should be rewritten.

Gavlas, John T. "Psychometric Properties of the Modern Homonegativity Scale in the Southern United States." ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/4919.

Full text
Abstract:
The Modern Homonegativity Scale (MHS) is designed to measure a distinct modern form of prejudice against gay people. Based on the conceptual framework of old-fashioned and modern antigay prejudice advanced by Morrison and Morrison, the present study was conducted to assess the reliability and validity of the MHS as a measure of modern antigay prejudice in the southern United States a region where antigay prejudice appears to be particularly pervasive and damaging. This purpose was achieved by analyzing survey responses from 691 adult residents of 14 southern states. As hypothesized, MHS scores were correlated with political conservatism, contact with gay people, nonabusive antigay behavior, and scores on a traditional measure of antigay prejudice. Contrary to hypotheses, MHS scores were not related to sexual orientation, educational level, income level, or religious self-schema. Results concerning the relationships between MHS scores and other known correlates of antigay prejudice were mixed. In factor analyses, items on the MHS and a traditional measure of antigay prejudice did not load on different factors. The results of this study suggest that the MHS is a highly reliable measure of modern antigay prejudice in the South, but that its validity as such is limited. This study promotes positive social change by providing evidence that should aid in the selection of appropriate measures to use in future studies of prejudice against gay people in the South. Such studies promise to result in the development of more effective interventions to reduce antigay prejudice in the southern United States but such studies will produce useful findings only to the extent that the instruments used are reliable and valid measures of the constructs they purport to measure in this region.

Abstract:
Ethical and competent professional counselors are needed to provide quality counseling services to the public. Counselor educators and supervisors have the responsibility of training competent counselors. Furthermore, counselors and counselors-in-training have the responsibility of continually assessing their own development and implementing measures to increase their competency. Assessment instruments have sought to measure counseling competencies through evaluating counseling skills. However, a paucity of research exists that examines counseling competencies in a comprehensive manner using a psychometrically sound approach. Therefore, a need exists for a psychometrically sound assessment instrument that measures the construct of counseling competencies in a holistic manner. Thus, the purpose of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of the Counseling Competencies Scale?? (CCS; UCF Counselor Education Faculty, 2009), an instrument designed to measure counseling competencies, within the areas of counseling skills, professional dispositions, and professional behaviors. The sample included 81 counseling practicum students and 21 counseling practicum supervisors from two graduate counselor education programs at public institutions accredited by the Council for Accreditation for Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) within the United States (one program in the southeast and another in the northwest). The practicum supervisors evaluated the counseling competencies of the counseling practicum students per the CCS at the semester midpoint and conclusion. Additionally, the counseling practicum students evaluated their own counseling competencies per the CCS at the semester midpoint and conclusion. Furthermore, the counseling practicum students and supervisors both completed a demographic questionnaire developed by the researcher.; The data analysis procedures employed to test the research hypotheses were: (a) factor analysis, (b) Pearson product-moment correlation (two-tailed), and (c) Cronbach's alpha. The exploratory factor analyses yielded five midterm CCS factors ((a) Factor 1: Assessment and Application, (b) Factor 2: Professional Behaviors and Dispositions, (c) Factor 3: Beginning Counseling Skills, (d) Factor 4: Advanced Counseling Skills, (e) Factor 5: Directive Counseling Skills) and four final CCS factors ((a)Factor 1: Professional Dispositions and Behaviors, (b) Factor 2: Counseling Skills, (c) Factor 3: Assessment and Application, (d) Factor 4: Growth). Additionally, the CCS exhibited strong internal consistency reliability for both the individual factors and the overall models. The interrater reliability among raters yielded a low correlation (Skills (r = .436), Dispositions (r = .515), Behaviors (r = .467), and Total (r = .570)). Furthermore, an assessment of criterion-related validity yielded a high correlation (r = .407) between the final total score on the CCS and the students' final grade in the counseling practicum course. The results of the statistical analyses support the development of the CCS, a promising assessment instrument for evaluating counseling competencies within counselors-in-training. Through the further development of the CCS, counselor educators and supervisors will have a sound method for assessing their students' levels of counseling competencies and learning outcomes. Additionally, the CCS may support counselor educators and supervisions in their ethical and legal responsibilities as teachers, evaluators, and gatekeepers for the counseling profession. Furthermore, the CCS offers counselors-in-training a tool to assist them in understanding and developing their level of comprehensive counseling competencies.

The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of a Spanish version of the Bulimia Test-Revised (BULIT-R). The goal was to test the factorstructure equivalence of the BULIT-R across two samples of college students from two different cultures, Spain and the U.S. Researchers using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) have reported different model solutions for the factor structure of the BULIT-R: a one-factor model (McCarthy et al., 2002); a four-factor model (Vincent et al., 2002), a five-factor model (Thelen et al., 1991) and a six factor model (Santos, 1996). For any of the two samples, CFA did not support any of the models previously reported in the literature. EFA supported a six and a four factor models for the US and Spanish samples, respectively.

The dissertation consists of an introduction and three empirical journal articles. The introduction gives the theoretical background about self-esteem and its assessment with indirect measures, and primarily, integrates the three journal articles. The first article investigates the reliability and convergent and discriminant validity of indirect measures of self-esteem. The second article complements the examination of the psychometric properties. It contributes evidence to the predictive validity of indirect self-esteem measures. With using non-self-reported criteria, a double dissociation between explicit and implicit self-esteem is tested. The third article brings into focus an applied aspect of personality psychology. It is analyzed how defensive reactions are related to self-esteem discrepancies, that are different combinations of explicit and implicit self-esteem

Abstract:
Investigating the psychometric properties of a screening instrument for young children is necessary to ascertain its quality and accuracy. In light of the important role culture plays on human beliefs and parenting styles, a newly translated and adapted test needs to be studied. Evaluating outcomes on a translated version of a test may reveal significant information related to cultural specifications as well as the common nature of child development. The current study examined psychometric properties of the 48-month interval of the Ages and Stages Questionnaires: Social-Emotional Second Edition (ASQ:SE-2) and its Traditional Chinese version (ASQ:SE-TC), using item response theory (IRT). Participants in the U.S. included 3,005 young children/parents dyads; 1,455 dyads were collected to represent a Taiwanese sample. A two-dimensional Rasch Partial Credit Model (2D-RPCM), which was determined to present a better fit than a unidimensional Rasch Partial Credit Model, was used to examine the item fit, item difficulty, reliability, and item information curves to evaluate the psychometric properties on the ASQ:SE and ASQ:SE-TC. Further, differential item functioning was conducted to examine whether items were functioning differently in the two population groups. Lastly, the differences between the distributions of children’s latent traits on the continuum of social and emotional competencies for the U.S. and Taiwanese samples were investigated. Based on findings, the adequacy of psychometric properties is discussed, providing insight into the quality of particular items. Identified differences between the two populations are explored by reviewing literature regarding cultural comparisons of childrearing practices, parenting styles, and cultural beliefs. Future directions for research include examining the cultural equivalence between translated and original versions of other ASQ:SE-2 intervals.

Abstract:

The Boston Naming Test (BNT) is a popular confrontation naming test that is frequently used in the detection of naming deficits in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the test may not be appropriate when used outside of North America due to the influence of varying word frequency and familiarity between different cultures and languages. This study investigated the diagnostic validity of a South African 15-item adaption of the BNT (the BNT-SA-SF) in a Cape Town memory clinic population of patients with dementia and healthy, community-dwelling control participants. Between-groups comparisons, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses, and other diagnostic efficiency statistics were used to assess the test's discriminative capacity between patients with AD (n = 46), patients with other types of dementia (n = 23), and controls (n = 51), matched on key demographic variables. The AD group performed worse than patients with other types of dementia and controls on the BNT-SA-SF, and patients with other types of dementia scored more poorly than controls. The test showed the most significant discriminative capacity between patients with AD and controls, however. A general linear model examining the effects of socio-demographic variables on test performance found that BNT-SA-SF performance was not significantly affected by the socio-demographic characteristics of participants, including age, education, language, or socio-economic status, with the exception that men appear to achieve higher scores than women. Further, an item analysis identified a number of problematic items and suggestions are made concerning how to deal with these in future studies. Preliminary normative data stratified by sex and education are presented. Results support the clinical utility of the BNT-SA-SF as a screening test to aid in the diagnosis of AD from normal aging with older adults in South Africa. This study is a valuable step forward in the ongoing attempt to provide culturally appropriate and valid neuropsychological tests and norms for clinical and research purposes in South Africa. Future studies should examine the functioning of the test in larger samples, representative of the other major population and language groups in South Africa.

Abstract:
Measures of adult attachment developed in English have been translated and validated in multiple Spanish-speaking countries, yet to this date no self-report adult attachment instrument has been systematically examined for validation with Latinos/Hispanic Americans. The present study examined psychometric properties of a Spanish version of a widely used adult attachment scale, the Experiences in Close Relationships Scale (ECRS), with a bilingual college student sample. Following the dual-language split half (DLSH) quantitative method of evaluating semantic equivalence, 209 bilingual, Latinos/Hispanic American college students recruited from a large public university completed a DLSH version of the ECRS (half English, half Spanish). Internal consistency reliability and DLSH reliability were within acceptable limits, although significantly smaller than coefficients of the English ECRS completed by a large Caucasian sample (n = 459); 3- to 8-week test-retest reliability was also adequate. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a two-factor solution with 35 items accounting for 40% of the variance, which was similar to the English ECRS. Convergent validity was supported by findings that showed significant associations of attachment dimensions with social self-efficacy, self-esteem, depressive symptoms, and comfort with self-disclosure, but not interpersonal trust. Evidence for discriminant validity was found in that attachment dimensions were not significantly associated with social desirability. Theoretical implications, limitations, and future directions of the study will be discussed based on adult attachment theory and cross-cultural perspectives.

There is evidence that psychotic manifestation is not experienced only by people diagnosed with mental disorders but also by healthy people in the general population, known as psychotic-like experiences. The Community Assessment Psychic Experiences (CAPE) is an instrument used in epidemiological research and was developed specifically for the detection and evaluation of the frequency of psychotic-like experiences in the general population. The CAPE, in its original submission, is composed of 42 items, distributed in three dimensions: positive, negative and depressive. The objective of this study was to verify the evidence of reliability and validity the CAPE in a brazilian sample and to investigate the association of childhood traumas and cannabis use with the occurrence of psychotic-like experiences in individuals of the general population. The sample consisted of 217 patients in the first psychotic episode, 104 siblings of psychotic patients and 319 population-based controls, all residents in the coverage area of the São Paulo Regional Health Department (DRS XIII). Participants responded to assessment and diagnostic tools, including the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM IV (SCID), the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), the Cannabis Experience Questionnaire (CEQ), and CAPE. Clinical data were analyzed using SPSS statistical package and the psychometric evidence using AMOS software. After the removal of nine items, CAPE, with 33 items, showed good adjustment indices [CFI = 0.895; GFI = 0.822; PGFI = 0.761; RMSEA = 0.055 p (rmsea <= 0.05) = 0.04] and good internal consistency (> 0.70) in all its dimensions. In the analyzes performed only with the population-based sample, no significant differences were found between the CAPE-33 total scores and its three dimensions regarding age, marital status and schooling intervals. Women presented scores significantly higher than men in the total score (p <0.001) and in the negative (p <0.001) and depressive (p <0.001) dimensions. The experience of childhood traumas (emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional neglect, physical neglect) was associated with higher scores in the CAPE total score (p <0.001) and its three dimensions (positive p = 0.001, negative p = 0.004, depressive p <0.001). Individuals who reported cannabis use in their lifetime had higher scores in the positive dimension of the CAPE-33 compared to people who had never used the substance (p = 0.016). The CAPE adapted to Brazil (CAPE-33) showed good adjustment indices and internal consistency, as found in other cultures. Presence of early trauma and use of cannabis were associated with the occurrence of psychotic-like experiences, in accordance with what epidemiological studies show for schizophrenia. Our data corroborate the dimensional approach of the psychoses, with frequency and severity of the manifestations being distributed in a continnum in the general population.

Abstract:
The Chinese government has announced the 2013 Guidelines for developing a national system for early detection of disability among children under 6 years of age. However, given limited resources, challenges exist with developmental measures required in the 2013 Guidelines. In order to meet the needs for a more accurate and cost-efficient measure for developmental assessment, the Ages & Stages Questionnaires:INVENTORY was translated into Simplified Chinese, and validated on a regional sample of 812 Chinese children ages from 1-25 months. Psychometric properties were examined; data from previous studies on the ASQ:INVENTORY in the U.S. were compared to identify differences between the two countries. Results indicated that the Chinese ASQ:INVENTORY was an instrument with sufficient internal consistency, reliability and validity. It was well accepted by parents and professionals in China. Findings suggested that the Chinese ASQ:INVENTORY provides a promising alternative measure for screening and diagnosing developmental delays in young children in China. Implications for future research and implementation are discussed.

Towers, David Norman. "Psychometric Properties of Frontal EEG Asymmetry Scores." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/194972.

Full text
Abstract:
Frontal encephalographic (EEG) alpha asymmetry has been proposed as a measure of the relative difference in average cortical activity between the right and left anterior cortex, where this difference is taken as a physiological marker of trait and state level variables associated with affect. The validity of asymmetry as an indicator of both physiological and psychological variables is in part determined by the psychometric properties of asymmetry scores. The present studies focus on the psychometric assessment of frontal alpha asymmetry measured during rest. The first study involves a novel approach in the assessment of the internal consistency reliability of asymmetry scores. Previous studies estimated internal consistency reliability via Cronbach's alpha, using a relatively small set of asymmetry score that summarized activity over segments of the EEG data (e.g. one minute). Such an approach, however, will create estimates dependent on the number of segments utilized rather than the total amount of data recorded. Thus in the first study, individual FFT epochs were treated as items, thereby maximizing the total number of items used to estimate internal consistency reliability. Results of this study suggest internal consistency reliability is greater than previously reported, and as such, the duration of resting EEG data necessary to achieve a reasonable reliability criterion may be shorter than the current standard. In the second study, asymmetry scores were assessed as a specific case of difference scores, which are susceptible to a statistical artifact associated with differences in true-score variance for the component measures. Predicted asymmetry scores associated with the statistical artifact were obtained by estimating the true-score variance of right and left alpha power. The use of hierarchical linear regression showed some influence of the statistical artifact on the relationship between asymmetry scores and a measure of depressive severity, suggesting that some caution may be warranted in interpreting asymmetry results with relatively small effect sizes.

Carman, Josie. "Evaluating the Psychometric Properties of PEAK Training." OpenSIUC, 2013. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/theses/1089.

Abstract:
Skinner (1957) published a theoretical viewpoint of verbal behavior that suggested a comprehensive behavioral account of language. However, this publication contained no empirical research and expanded only conceptually on the basic principles of operant conditioning with nonhuman organisms. Since this publication, there has been some research to support the concepts of verbal operants described by Skinner (1957), yet the research has been of relative limited scope and depth (Dymond et al., 2006). In the decades that followed Skinner's text, a number of empirical and conceptual advances have been documented which have concluded that language learning is more complex than initially thought (Hayes et al., 2001). A number of applied curriculum and assessment protocols have been developed to use Skinner's concepts of language to teach such skills to children with autism and related disabilities. However, those published documents contain no empirical support of their effectiveness, and do not include either a) post-1957 Skinner era behavior analysis or b) concepts found in Skinner's own 1957 text beyond the basic verbal operants. As a result, the present study examined the utility of a new behavior analytic system to teach language and cognition to children with autism and related disorders. Specifically, this study evaluated the relationships between the PEAK Relational Training System and the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and the Illinois Early Learning Standards. Also, the research looked at the effects of a novel implementer compared to a familiar caregiver. Using 13 children (ages 3-8) exposed to the PEAK system for a period of three months, it was found that educational gains were observed in all students. Furthermore, there was a positive correlation of the PEAK Relational Training System and the PPVT. Also a positive correlation was found between the PEAK score and the Illinois Early Learning Standards. The data also suggests that the PEAK Relational Training System can be implemented with same procedural fidelity with a novice implementer compared to a familiar caregiver.

Drysdale, Michael J. "Psychometric Properties of Postsecondary Students' Course Evaluations." DigitalCommons@USU, 2010. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/783.

Full text
Abstract:
Several experts in the area of postsecondary student evaluations of courses have concluded that they are stable or reliable measures as well as being measures that provide ways of making valid inferences regarding teacher effectiveness. Often these experts have offered these conclusions without supporting evidence. Surprisingly, a thorough review of the literature revealed very few reported test-retest reliability studies of course evaluations and the results from these studies are contradictory. In the area of validity, the conclusions offered by scholars who conducted meta-analyses of mutlisection course studies are inconsistent. This leads to the following two research questions: 1. What is the test-retest reliability over a 3-week period of the course evaluation currently employed at Utah State University? 2. Can results of the course evaluation employed at Utah State University be used to make valid inferences about a teacher's effectiveness? Two parts of a study were conducted to answer these questions. First, a test-retest reliability part was conducted with students from courses at Utah State University, employing a 3-week time lapse between administrations of the course evaluations. Second, a multisection course validity part was conducted using existing student ratings data and final examination scores for 100 sections of MATH 1010 over a 5-year period. Correlational analyses were conducted on the resulting data from both studies. Test-retest reliability coefficients ranging from 0.64 to 0.94 were found. In the second study, the correlation coefficients from the validity study ranged from -0.39 to 0.71, with a mean coefficient of 0.14 and 0.11 for final examination score by instructor rating and final examination score by course rating, respectively. Results from both parts of the study suggest that the course evaluation used at USU is not reliable and that results of the course evaluation do not provide information that can be used to make valid inferences regarding teacher effectiveness.

Abstract:
The aims were: 1) translate and cross-cultural adapt the Scale of Oral Health Outcomes for 5-year-old children (SOHO-5) to the Brazilian Portuguese language; 2) to assess the psychometric properties (reliability, validity and responsiveness) of self- and parental proxy-reports of the SOHO-5; 3) to assess the impact of dental caries and trauma dental injuries (TDI) on childrens oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) according to both self- and parental reports; 4) to assess the agreement among parents and children regarding the childs OHRQoL. We tested the cross-cultural adaptation in two pilots with 40 children aged 5- 6-years and their parents. Validity and reliability were tested on 193 children and parents. Of the 193, 154 completed the SOHO-5 7-14 days after the childs dental treatment to assess responsiveness. For this purpose, they also answered global transition judgments on subjects perceptions of change in their oral health following treatment. Measures of responsiveness included standardized effect sizes (ES) and standardized response mean (SRM). To assess the impact, 335 pairs of parents and children completed the SOHO-5 and three calibrated examiners performed the childrens oral examinations. Agreement among reports was assessed in 298 mother-child and 37 father-child pairs. The internal consistency by Cronbach\'s alpha coefficient was 0.90 and 0.77 for the children self- and for parental proxy- reports, respectively. For test-retest reliability, Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) for total score was 0.92 of of the child version and 0.98 of the parental version. The SOHO-5 showed satisfactory construct and discriminant validity. For responsiveness, there was an improvement of childrens oral health after treatment (p<0.001). There were significant differences in the pre- and post-treatment scores of those who reported improving a little and those who reported improving a lot (p<0.05). For both versions, the ES and SRM based on change scores mean for total scores and for categories of global transitions judgments were moderate to large. The multivariate model showed an association between dental caries and a worse childs OHRQoL, according to children and parents perceptions, (RR (Rate Ratio) (CI95%) = 6.37 (4.71; 8.62) e 10.81 (7.65; 15.27)), respectively. The mean directional difference of the total scores of -1.35 (CI95% -2.330; -0.372) was only significant for the father-child pairs. The ICC for total scores was 0.84 (CI 95% 0.798; 0.867) and 0.67 (CI 95% 0.445; 0.814) among mother-child and father-child pairs, respectively. The Brazilian version of the SOHO-5 is reliable, valid and responsive for 5-6 years-old children in Brazil. Dental caries, but not TDI, is associated with worse OHRQoL in children aged 5-6-years. Mothers do rate their young childrens OHRQoL similarly to childrens self-reports, while fathers tend to underreport.

Abstract:
The World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0) was created by the World Health Organization (WHO) for assessment of functionality and disability, according to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of the 12-item version in the Brazilian Family Health Strategy (ESF). It is an exploratory, descriptive study based on a case study, using a mixed methodology (quantitative and qualitative techniques). Participants in the study were 9 professionals from one ESF team and 120 people accompanied by them. The professionals participated in a training on ICF and of the WHODAS 2.0 and applied this scale to 120 people. Seven professionals and all patients answered questionnaires about the applicability of the scale. 115 (95.8%) of the patients presented some disability and 22.5% to 68.5% of people showed slight to extreme difficulty degree in any item on the scale. The evaluation of reliability and concurrent validity of the scale was: 1) Cronbach alpha of 0.83, with the diminishing of this value for all items was erased; 2) Intraclass correlation coefficient of the inter-rater reliability and total score of 0.73 to 0.97; 3) spearman\'s coefficient for concurrent validity with \"World Health Organization\'s Quality of Life Instrument - Bref\" (WHOQOL-Bref) of 0.54. The majority of the 120 interviewees considered full satisfaction with the guidelines, questions and answers of the scale (72.5%, 79.2% and 80% respectively), as well as the briefness (97.5%) and it relevance regarding their daily needs and it use by health professionals (71.7% and 94.2%). It was found a statistically significant relation between lower levels of schooling and higher difficulty in understating the orientations and answering them was found. All professionals considered as satisfactory the understanding of the guidelines, questions and answers, as well as the ease of completion, the briefness and the relevance regarding the needs12 of the people accompanied in the service. Four considered that the information could not be obtained in other ways in their work, and two considered it feasible to insert the scale into their work routine. The qualitative analysis showed \"barriers\" in the use of WHODAS 2.0 such as: 1) difficulties for professionals to use the scale in their routine work; 2) adaptation demands on some scale words/sentences for better understanding; 3) difficulty of the scale to really reflect the concept of universal application of the ICF due to the fact of evaluate functionality based on health conditions, making it difficult to express contextual factors; 4) need to adapt the translation of the term \"disability\" to incapacidade (not deficiência). \"Facilitators\" of its use have also been found: 1) demands for care including the functionality by the people accompanied in the service; 2) the structure of WHODAS 2.0 with clear and defined orientations, highlighted in different colors; 3) The course and training offered on ICF and WHODAS 2.0 to the professionals. The WHODAS 2.0 is a good tool for assessing functionality and disability based on health conditions, but it has limitations because it does not cover the evaluation of the contextual factors, that are important components of the ICF. There is a significant demand for disability prevention and promotion of human functionality in the ESF. Further studies on the application of the ICF concepts are necessary, including the use of WHODAS 2.0 at this level of attention.

Abstract:
Aims: Our understanding of adolescent attachment representations is limited, largely due to the lack measures which exist to assess attachment in this developmental period. The current study aimed to explore the psychometric properties and clinical utility of the Adolescent Story Stem Profile (ASSP); an online measure of internal representations, adapted from narrative story-stem techniques. Methods: A community sample of 253 adolescents in mainstream secondary schools completed the ASSP, and their responses were used to assess the ASSP's ability to predict self- and teacher-rated difficulties as measured by the SDQ and CGAS. Responses of a clinical sample of 32 adolescents in residential or foster care were compared to those of an age- and gender-matched subset of the community sample. Results: The factor structure of the ASSP was analysed using principal component analysis, revealing a four-factor model. These factors were found to predict responses on two of the five SDQ subscales, but not the total SDQ difficulties or the CGAS. Scores on two of the four factors were found to differ significantly in the clinical sample when compared to the subset of the community sample. Conclusions: The ASSP shows promising results in its ability to measure the attachment representations of adolescents, however improvements could be made. This are discussed with reference to the limitations of the study, and suggestions for future work are made.

Abstract:
Research suggests rumination and worry, which have typically been considered as strongly linked to depression and anxiety, respectively, may be better conceptualized through a transdiagnostic construct. According to Ehring and colleagues (2011), a construct broader than worry or rumination might be considered as Repetitive Negative Thinking. Ehring notes three key characteristics of repetitive negative thinking: the thinking is repetitive; it is at least partly intrusive; and it is difficult to disengage from. Two additional features include: individuals perceive it as unproductive and it captures mental capacity. This working definition of these five features formed the basis for the initial development and validation of the Perseverative Thinking Questionnaire (Ehring, Zetsche, Weidacker, Wahl, Schönfeld, & Anke, 2011) which is intended to be a content-independent measure of RNT. The Perseverative Thinking Questionnaire includes 15 total items with three items for each of the assumed characteristics of repetitive negative thinking (repetitive, intrusive, difficult to disengage from, unproductive, and capturing mental capacity). The PTQ is designed to assess for a common process found not only in individuals with prominent worry (as seen in GAD) or rumination (as seen in depression) but also in other diagnoses such as obsessive compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. In its current state, the PTQ remains largely untested, leaving its utility in the changing field questionable. The current study intended to assess the psychometric quality of the PTQ to ensure its usefulness as a potential diagnostic tool and as a reflection of Ehring’s model of RNT. The current study administered the PTQ to a large and diverse group of college students located at a Midwestern university. Additional measures were administered to assess the psychometric properties of the measure. Construct and convergent reliability were demonstrated through comparison between the PTQ and the other measures. Unexpectedly, the PTQ and Cognitive Avoidance Questionnaire demonstrated a positive correlation, suggesting the measures are tapping into similar constructs. The factor structure of the PTQ was of particular interest in the current study. Further assessment of the factors reportedly contained in the PTQ was valuable, not just to assess the quality of the measure, but also because doing so would provide support for or undermine the proposed definition and key characteristics believed to underlie the construct of repetitive negative thinking. In this study, a two factor model was best supported for the current data, through Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis. This finding prompts further consideration and research for the construct of repetitive negative thinking.

Welby-Cooke, Geraldine. "The psychometric properties of a talent mindset index." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/29273.

Full text
Abstract:
The talent mindset of an organisation is a critical success factor which can enhance its capability in driving its strategic objectives. For some, the talent of the organisation may not yet have been defined in relation to the long term objectives whilst other organisations have defined talent but experience uncertainty around the linkage of the various talent management practices. The successful organisations are those that not only understand what core talent means to them, but how to leverage the talent in a manner that allows it to act decisively to drive competitive advantage as well as secure the future success of the organisation. These organisations generally embody a talent mindset. The purpose of this study was to explore the psychometric properties of a talent mindset index which proposes to measure the talent mindset of an organisation through its nine dimensions. The research thus aimed to define the construct validity as well as the reliability of the instrument for usage in business. The ambit of this would be to validate an instrument that could be utilised to establish intervention areas to sustain a talent mindset. Furthermore, the review would allow researchers to further explore the concept of talent mindset, mental models, culture and other related constructs. The talent mindset instrument was administered to a population of 558 Managers and HR professionals, of which a total sample of 154 was obtained within an organisation in the aviation industry. Only 150 of the response data was considered valid for usage in statistical analysis. The researcher conducted an analysis of the data in terms of the descriptives, ran an exploratory factor analysis and reviewed the reliability coefficients of the index in order to identify the psychometric properties of the instrument. The findings were that the instrument displayed a low degree of construct validity with the current methodology, as only one factor could be derived as opposed to the nine proposed in the instrument. The instrument was however found to have a high internal consistency (reliability) with a Cronbach alpha of 0.93, after the 30 items representing the factor were tested. Abstract:
No caso específico do Brasil, nenhum.
The safe and reliable operation of nuclear power plants does not depend only on technical excellence, but also it depends on people and on the organization. For this reason, the importance of organizational factors in causal mechanisms of accidents has been recognized by a number of research organizations in Europe, USA and Japan. Deficiencies in these factors reveal weaknesses in the organization\'s safety culture. A primary concern in evaluating a safety culture is to ensure that research instruments are valid and reliable. In the areas of occupational health and safety there are series of tools to evaluate the safety culture that present studies of its psychometric properties (reliability and validity), but very few of these qualities in the nuclear area. In the specific case of Brazil, none of these tools exist. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to develop a model to assess the safety culture in nuclear facilities with valid and reliable measures. The survey instrument was developed in accordance with the psychometric principles established for quantitative research and thus were held to analyze the reliability and validation of content, face and construct. The instrument was applied in the research institutes of the Brazilian Nuclear Energy National Commission (CNEN), yielding a total of 226 completed questionnaires answered. The survey results made it possible to characterize demographically the respondents and identify many strengthened aspects, but also some weaknesses in the safety culture of the evaluated institutions. The instrument showed good evidence of reliability with Cronbach\'s alpha coefficient 0,95 for the total instrument. The construct validation was performed by means of a factor analysis with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) extraction method and Varimax orthogonal factor rotation. Although factor analysis results have shown that the instrument has good evidence of construct validity, some adjustments in case of a new application of the instrument have also been suggested.

Karlsson, Clara, and Mira Spännargård.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Psychometric properties of the Parenting Stress Index ? Short Form were investigated using a heterogeneous sample of 185 mothers and fathers of children between the ages of 4-10 years. The Difficult Child and Parent Distress subscales, as well as Total PSI-SF, were found to be internally consistent. Confirmatory factor analysis did not reveal support for a three-factor model. Results were mixed in terms of support for convergent and discriminant validity. The PSI-SF Total and subscales were related to measures of parent psychopathology and perceptions of child adjustment, but not to observed parent and child behavior. Implications of these findings and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Abstract:
Conduct disorders in children are very common. The consequences of such problems are far-reaching not least because they impact upon the quality of the parent-child relationship. Parent Management Training (PMT) is a widely recognised treatment for childhood conduct disorders although the outcomes for many children are disappointing. Theoretically, the current study considers why outcomes are not more favourable and illustrates that attention should be paid to the role of maternal cognition in the quality of mother-child relationships. The aims of this study were to: • orientate the reader to the nature of the problem • describe the development of a tool that measures the quality of the mother-child relationship, The Parent-Child Relationship Questionnaire (PCRQ) • assess the psychometric properties of the PCRQ • discuss the findings, strengths and weaknesses of the study and consider future research ideas Control mothers completed the PCRQ once. Referred mothers completed the PCRQ and a measure of depression pre and post PMT. These mothers also completed a measure of parenting stress pre group only. A further sample of mothers completed the PCRQ twice. Principal components analysis was used to determine a) the factor structure of the PCRQ and b) whether this differed between a control and referred sample. One factor was extracted from the control sample and two from the referred. The two factors extracted were named Negative Cognition and Emotion (NC-E) and Behavioural Management (BM). Reliability analysis revealed adequate levels of alpha (Cronbach's) for the PCRQ and NC-E subscale although only barely adequate for BM subscale in both samples. Testretest reliability analysis on a small sample revealed a high Pearson's correlation coefficient. Intra-class correlation coefficients for total PCRQ and the BM subscale were reasonable whereas for NC-E the coefficient was weak. Criterion validity was explored by comparing the control and referred sample means. The differences between the means were significant. Concurrent and convergent validity were investigated by computing correlations between the PCRQ and the Parenting Stress Index Short-Form (PSI-SF; Abidin, 1995). This showed moderate correlations between the measures. The correlations between two PSI-SF dimensions and the BM subscale were low. Discriminant validity was investigated by computing correlations between the PCRQ and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI; Beck & Steer, 1993). This showed a moderate relationship. Sensitivity to change following PMT was investigated by computing a paired samples t test in the referred sample. This test was also used to compare the pre and post group scores for the individual subscales. The changes were significant. There was no relationship between PCRQ scores and either age or gender. Normative values for the PCRQ and its subscales were calculated using a theoretical normal distribution. The results suggest that the PCRQ can be used to investigate the extent of negative maternal cognition underlying the quality of the mother-child relationship. Its usefulness is enhanced by employing a measure of maternal depression.

Harvey, Michelle B. "Development and Psychometric Validation of the State-Trait Spirituality Inventory." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2004. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc4609/.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study contributes to the widening body of spirituality research by conceptualizing it as a state-trait construct. A new measure of spirituality, the State-Trait Spirituality Inventory (STSI), was created and validated according to psychometric methods of test construction. In its current form, the STSI contains seven state spirituality items and six trait spirituality items. A thorough review of the literature identified common themes in spirituality definitions and assisted in developing definitions of trait and state spirituality. Internal consistency for the trait scale was .88 and for the state scale, .68. Good test-retest reliability was found with coefficients of .84 for trait spirituality and .81 for state spirituality. Results from a preliminary undergraduate sample as well as from the validation sample yielded a two-factor solution. In general, items determined by expert panels as trait items loaded on one factor and items deemed to be state items loaded on the second factor. Multitrait multimethod analysis yielded mixed findings for convergent, divergent, and concurrent validity for the spirituality and religiosity traits. Methods consisted of paper-and-pencil cognitive and behavioral measures. Cognitive measures were more likely to support convergent/divergent validity than were behavioral measures. A major emphasis in the study was to determine whether state and/or trait spirituality were able to predict current health status and provide evidence for predictive validity. Positive relationships were identified between trait spirituality and the mental health measures of the Short Form-36® (SF-36). In contrast, it was negatively related to the Role-Physical scale. State spirituality was inversely related to the Physical Component scale. These findings are discussed within the context of minimal research using the SF-36 and spirituality measures. The MTMM analysis was limited by available spirituality and religiosity measures that contain only cognitive or behavioral items. Suggestions for future research are offered.

Abstract:
This study aimed to provide evidence for the reliability and validity of the Systems Coaching Survey (SCS). Systems coaching is an approach to building capacity among groups of educators to drive educational reform efforts by employing seven interdependent sets of skills (interpersonal communication, data-based problem solving, team facilitation, content knowledge dissemination, leadership, professional learning, evaluation). The SCS was designed to measure educators’ skills to facilitate implementation of a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS). The 41-item survey was piloted nationally in the spring of 2017 by 1,060 educators across 180 schools in six U.S. states who had responsibilities for facilitating MTSS practices in their schools. This study used multilevel confirmatory factor analysis to examine the construct validity and reliability of the tool at the educator and school levels. Results indicated support for seven factors at the educator level representing the seven systems coaching skill sets, and one between-level factor labeled School Context. Congeneric reliability estimates were in the acceptable to high ranges. Implications for future research on the SCS and use of the tool in practice are discussed.
