Full textBackground: Mental health is a state of well-being where the individual can cope with common stress, be able to work productively and to contribute to society. In the elite sport, there are high demands on the individual, which generates a great physical and mental stress in the individual. It makes elite athletes a vulnerable group for mental ill health and risk-taking behaviors. Aim: The aim was to describe experiences of mental illness among people practicing elite sports. Method: A literature review was conducted. The articles were retrieved from the databases Cinahl and PsycInfo. The literature review was based on qualitative and quantitative articles. Both systematic and unsystematic searches were conducted, resulting in twelve articles. Results: The experiences of mental illness among the elite athletes were summarized in three themes: Living up to one's own and others' expectations, lack of knowledge and support, and consequences of mental illness. The theme, Living up to one's own and others' expectations consists of two sub-themes: to change ones identity and to be subjected to stigmatization. Conclusion: The mental illness in the elite sport increases as well as it does within the general population. The stigmatization as well as the lack of knowledge about mental illness within the elite sport have proved to be great. Therefore, it should be added more resources on education in order to be able to provide better support to people who suffer from mental illness in elite sports.
Kazan, Ibrahim.

Full textBackground A lot of children live in families where a parent is suffering from some kind of mental illness. As nurses we have to notice these children, when we meet patients with mental illnes.
Aim The overall purpose of this study was to examine if and how the district/ psychiatric nurse acknowledge the child’s situation, when a parent is suffering from mental illness.
Method A qualitative approach was chosen for this study. Six psychiatric nurses and seven district nurses were interviewed. Content analysis was used for the analysis.
Result Four main themes appeard in the result: dialogs of different character, family focus, collaboration and report duty. The dialog differed depending on the purpose and depending on working with a family perspective. Regarding collaboration with other organizations, the nurses requested and got help in order to come further in working with the patients and their children. The duty to report was sometimes a problematic matter.
The conclusion was that all nurses agreed to the importance of acknowledging the children of families with mental illness. However there was a lack of well-functioning working methods of how to help these children. One proposal for further research is to develop evidence based methods family intervention programs.

Full textThe purpose of the study was to explore Somali young adults’ perception of mental illness and how they look on seeking support and help from people in the surrounding environment. The method that has been used is a qualitative method using semi-structured interviews. The participants in the interviews were young adults with a Somali ethnic background. There were three men and women and their ages vary between 19 to 29 years old. The analysis was done using a qualitative manifest content analysis. The result of the study shows that young adults Somalis’ perception of mental illness looked different and difficult to define. Young adult Somalis also feel that it is not possible to talk openly about mental illness with people in their surroundings, especially with members of the family. Their perception of support and help is that it is avoided, religion plays a major role among it and there is a lack of knowledge regarding where they can seek help and support for mental illness.

Full textMental illness among young people is a constantly increasing problem that affects the media debate regarding the subject. Media has a strong position of power in the society today, which makes it important to critically explore its production of the expanding health problem. The aim of the study is to investigate how Swedish newspapers portraits mental illness among young people during a one-year period. The critical discourse analysis is used to explore the relationship between the use of language and the maintenance of the unequal distribution of power in the society. Furthermore, it is used to analyse if it is experts or young people who gives a voice in the matter. The result is divided in three main categories; the welfare-discourse, the postmodern discourse and the individualistic discourse. The welfare-discourse revealed how the Swedish welfare state fails regarding its obligations to cover all citizens needs regarding mental health issues. The postmodern discourse featured a society where young people are highly exposed to structural stressors as higher demands in the education and labour market and the stress enchanted by social media. The individualistic discourse presented how social causes are to be solved by individualistic interventions. The result in general showed a lack of preventive approach regarding solutions to the problem. Within all discourses, experts and professionals were the ones who mainly got a voice in the matter, which mirrors the young people’s lack of power in relation to experts. This reflect and reflects cultural trends which further leads to influence political interventions and therefore social work practices.

Full textThe aim of this study is to investigate professionals perceptions of the factors that are important in recovery from mental illness. The study also aims to focus at the importance Fountain House perceive to have in the recovery from professionals perceptions. The questions are: What factors are perceived as important regarding recovery for individuals suffering from mental illness by professionals perceptions? How important is Fountain House in relation to the recovery for individuals with mental illness by professionals perceptions? The method for this study is a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews. As a theoretical approach has empowerment been used. Social constructivism has been used to understand what is constructed as normal and abnormal, and its relevance in relation to professionals perceptions of the important factors in recovery from mental illness. The factors that are perceived to be of importance regarding recovery from mental illness is voluntary, the individual is given time, empowerment and self-determination, social relationships and support from others. Also psychosocial rehabilitation and employment, self-esteem and that the individual is seen as a human being are perceived as important factors. In the recovery process empowerment is a constant theme when it is perceived as important for each individual to find their strength and need for a changed situation. Social constructivism is consistently when the society constructs what is normal and abnormal, and this creates what is perceived as a good health.

Full textThe purpose of this report is to find out how companies work with the working environment and what they do to prevent mental illnesses. Both a literature study and interviews have been conducted to get as good and clear information as possible about how the company works with the work environment, as well as which laws and regulations that must be followed. In implementing the results, two AFSs were taken into account, the Swedish Work Environment Authority's statute book, which the writers considered to be best suited for mental illness and the company. The AFSs are called “Work with the systematic work environment” (SAM) and “Organizational and social work environment”. The company has eight relevant documentation on mental illness. The results show a review between the company's documentation and the Swedish Work Environment Authority's requirements, as well as an overview of the respondents' answers from the interviews. The conclusion with the report after review with the company's documentation, the Swedish Work Environment Authority's requirements and the interviews is that the business meets the conditions and works with the work environment and mental illness in a good way. The company's vision of the work around the work environment and ill health could be presented more clearly to the consultants but is otherwise clear and good.

Full textIn this paper, mental illness among youths is studied by interviewing professionals whom work close to the youths. The purpose is to investigate the causes of mental illness among youths. Youths are defined as people between the ages of 12 and 19 years old. In order to gain an understanding of the causes of mental illness circumstances in the youths´ lives are analyzed based on an intersectional perspective and a “social order theory”. Another purpose is to try to determine what circumstances prevent mental illness or help the youths to overcome it. To investigate this, semi structured interviews are conducted with professionals whom work close to the youths in Stockholm. The collected data is analyzed with a qualitative analysis method. The study’s results show that high stress, high pressure, high demands and unstable living conditions are behind the mental illness of the youths. In addition, the gender system and the class system are significant structures that affect the health of the youth. Furthermore, function variations and citizenship status are identified as factors that cause differences in mental illness within the group. Social support is the most important factor in the prevention of mental illness. The conclusions that these findings reveal are that the structure of society and the design of the school as well as the individualization of society are the causes of mental illness as well as the reasons for the differences within the group of youths.

Full textThe purpose of this qualitative study was to examine how characters with mental illnesses are portrayed in horror movies and also the other characters attitude towards them. With the help of semiotic analyzing tools, neoformalism and stereotypical categories as both theory and method did we discover the underlaying meanings of the movies by observing the characters behavior and aesthetic characteristics in the background. The analysis was split in three categories; portrayal of deviant behavior, the other characters attitude towards the characters and environment, this to make it easier to get a result. The material consisted of the movies The Shining (1980) and Lights Out (2016) and were chosen since both movies portray characters with mental illnesses. The result did show that in both of the chosen characters behaviors was it possible to identify all of the stereotypes presented earlier in the theory chapter. It also appeared that the majority of all connotations that were identified was negative which was also reflected in the surrounding characters attitude towards the chosen characters. The Shining showed a bigger difference regarding positive and negative connotations between the beginning and ending of the movie while Lights Out barely showed any difference between them at all.

Full textIn today's information society with many impressions and activities people feel stressed. The mental illness is high and the Swedish health care system needs improvement for these patients. Art-making activities are still a relatively unknown area of nursing care. The purpose of this study was to illustrate how art-making activities can affect patients' mental illness and why art-making activities may be important in nursing care. The study was conducted as a literature review in which 15 scientific qualitative studies, quantitative studies and combined studies were included. Art-making can give patients a better mental health by expressing emotions such as fear, hope and strength. Art-making can relieve various symptoms such as pain, anxiety and loss of appetite. The personal development can be seen to increase by strengthening identity, meaningfulness and increased self-confidence. New coping strategies can be developed by focusing on art-making and increased well-being can be experienced as well as the long and short term. Art-making in the healthcare environment can result in an experience of a less clinical atmosphere and the social network is perceived to be strengthened by new relationships created in the context of art. Using art-making activities in nursing care can provide opportunities to relieve patients' traumatic experiences and feelings. An openness to new ideas, wider knowledge and use of evidence-based care can help nurses to promote patient health. More research in art-making linked to care is desirable, both nationally and internationally.

Full textThe aim of this study was to examine health professionals’ (N=108) attitudes towards people with mental illness as well as differences in attitudes depending on the respondents level of education and previously experiences of mental illness. The study is a part of the project “Psykisk Ohälsa” that has a prospective longitudinal design. To measure attitudes towards people with mental illness the questionnaire Community Attitudes Towards Mental Illness (CAMI-s) was used. Recruitment of health professionals was made with help from the unit directors on 70 different psychiatric wards and health professionals that worked with people with mental illness on a daily basis was asked to participate. The result shows only minor differences in attitudes towards people with mental illness between different education levels. Statistical significance differences between education level groups, was only found in one claim, where the respondents took a standpoint if the best way to manage people with mental illness was to keep them locked in. Results showed no differences in attitudes depending on experiences of mental illness. The conclusion of this study shows a predominantly positive attitude among health professionals towards people with mental illness. The study also shows, though to a lesser extent, that there are still tendencies to stigmatization and discriminating attitudes towards people with mental illness among health professionals.
