Full textBackground It is estimated that 50 million people live with dementia worldwide, and by 2030, the number is expected to rise to 82 million people. Most people with dementia experiences behavioural and psychological symptoms which causes suffering, lowered quality of life and earlier institutionalisation for the person. Non-pharmacological, person-centered care is prioritized for people with behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia. Music listening is a simple non-pharmacological act of care which can be executed by nurses in hospitals as well as nursing homes. Aim The aim was to describe how music listening as an act of care affects people with behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia. Method The method was a non-systematic literature review. The result was based on 15 scientific articles of quantitative methods. The databases used for data collection were Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature and PubMed. The quality of the articles were assessed using Sophiahemmet Högskolas quality assessment tool. The result was compiled using integrative analysis where the result was divided into appropriate categories. Results Music listening affected several of the behavioural and psychological symptoms and well-being. The majority of the studies showed a positive impact. The most emerging results were decreased agitation and increased well-being. Music listening had an impact on the person immediately. A long-term impact was measured in some studies. Conclusions The compilation of the studies implied that music listening has a positive impact by decreasing behavioural and psychological symptoms and increasing well-being for people with dementia, especially when used from a person-centered perspective. There is a need for empirical studies of qualitative methods to gain a deeper understanding, as well as further literature reviews including studies that use the same assessment tools.

Full textBackground: Patients with serious mental disorder have through history been isolated from the rest of the society. An historical summary of psychiatric treatment from The Middle Ages until today are presented. Concepts such as mental illness, psychiatric disorder, serious mental illness and mental disabilities are described. A recap of the nursing in psychiatric care is given as well as problems attached to nursing in this field. Aim: The aim is to illuminate patients´ experiences of living with serious mental disorder. Methods: A literature review based on nine qualitative scientific articles and one quantitative scientific article published between the years 2002-2012. Results: The result showed six themes: loneliness, every-day, surrounding attitudes, self stigma and shame, the response from health professionals and the role as a patient. Discussions: Themes that emerged in the result are here discussed. The authors connect the themes to Kari Martinsen´s philosophy of caring and a reason is held about the consequences of loneliness, the importance of being part of a community and the impact that attitudes surrounding mental illness have on the self-image. The interaction between the areas is illustrated and finally we debate which factors who are of importance for increased well-being.

Full textPatients suffering from mental disorders receive worse treatment for their somatic illnesses than people in general. Patients with mental disorders believe they are treated differently from other people without psychiatric diagnosis in general hospitals. The aim of this review was to describe what attitudes nurses in somatic care have towards patients with mental disorders. The aim was also to examine the quality of the included articles by describing the sample and response rate. This review has a descriptive design and 13 articles were included from the databases PubMed and Scopus. The results imply that the attitude nurses had towards patients with mental disorders is that they were not only demanding but also a risk to themselves and to others. Somatic wards are not considered to be the right place for patients with mental disorders. The physical environment and the number of staff were not adjusted when caring for patients with mental disorders. Nurses perceived their own ability to care for these patients to be limited. They felt that they lacked knowledge and education and that they did not always consider the mental disorder to be their responsibility as nurses in somatic care. The conclusion is that nurses in somatic care many times have negative attitudes towards patients with mental disorders which may lead to generalizing about this group of patients. Lack of education and faith in their own ability shows that nurses need more support in caring for patients with mental disorders in somatic wards. The review also implies that an approach that treats the whole patient is not clear when it comes to the care of patients with mental disorders in somatic care.

Full textBakgrund: Andelen ungdomar med psykisk ohälsa ökar inom skolan, vilket ställer högre krav på skolsköterskor och deras kompetens att möta dessa elever. Uppväxt, familjens sociala ställning och levnadsvillkor är faktorer som påverkar hälsan hos individer. Skolsköterskor ingår i elevhälsan och har en viktig roll i arbetet med psykisk ohälsa, både vad gäller att tidigt identifiera och ge stöd till elever samt arbeta hälsofrämjande. Skolsköterskor är oftast ensamma i sin profession inom den enskilda skolan, vilket ställer höga krav på förmågan att kunna arbeta självständigt, fatta egna beslut och vara trygg inom sitt kunskapsområde. Genom sin tillgänglighet har skolsköterskan en centrala position för att kunna identifiera och fånga upp elever med psykisk ohälsa och tidigt kunna erbjuda stöd för att främja elevers utveckling och lärande. Syfte: Syftet är att beskriva skolsköterskans arbete med ungdomars psykiska ohälsa inom skolan. Metod: Systematisk litteraturstudie. Sökningar som utförts i Cinahl, PsycInfo, Psycarticles och ERIC resulterade i sex artiklar som efter granskning och analys ligger till grund för resultatet. Resultat: I resultatet presenteras fyra teman med tillhörande kategorier som framkommit genom analys. Dessa består av: av identifiering av psykisk ohälsa, åtgärder vid psykisk ohälsa, hälsofrämjande arbete kring psykisk hälsa/ohälsa samt samverkan runt elever med psykisk ohälsa. Konklusion: Skolsköterskor utgör, genom sin position på skolan, en nyckelperson vad gäller att identifiera psykisk ohälsa hos elever genom sin tillgänglighet, kommunikativa färdigheter och användning av screeningverktyg. Förebyggande och hälsofrämjande arbete är viktigt, men både tid och förutsättningar saknas för detta ändamål.

Full textSyftet med denna rapport är att öka kunskapen och förståelsen kring bemötande och särskilt de svårigheter som kan uppstå i samband med möten med psykiskt störda personer. Vårt arbete bygger på litteraturstudier där vi tittat dels på litteratur som behandlar psykisk störning dels på litteratur som vi bedömt vara väsentligt när det gäller bemötande, dessa böcker behandlar etik och empati i bemötandet. I arbetet beskriver vi kort tre psykiska störningar, antisocial personlighetsstörning, borderline samt narcissistisk personlighetsstörning. Vidare beskriver vi olika teorier kring bemötande. I resultatet diskuterar vi kring svårigheterna i att konstatera om en individ lider av en psykisk störning eller inte. Fortsättningsvis resonerar vi kring styrkan i att ha ett bemötande som fungerar i de flesta situationer.
