CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeiÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior<br>In searching for anticancer compounds derived from plant sources, 18 flavonoids were assayed for their cytotoxic potentials and the results were compared for structure-activity relationship purposes. The flavonoid group was subdivided in flavones and pterocarpans. The cytotoxic activity was initially evaluated on tumor cell lines, through the MTT assay, and on sea urchin eggs development. Studies of seed dormancy breakage, micropropagation and genetic diversity were conducted on seed from Zambia and Zimbabwe. In seed dormancy breakage, nicking part of the seed coat and gibberellic acid treatments GA3 and GA4/7 were investigated. In Study 1) nicking had significantly higher germination, with a rate of 99% within five days of sowing, whereas GA3 treatment and the control had 65 and 69% germination respectively after four weeks. Abstract:

Pterocarpus officinalis dominated forests are a rare ecosystem, found only in fifteen locations in Puerto Rico, all of which are adjacent to the coast and at risk from sea level rise, as well as nutrient pollution, upstream hydrological modifications, and deforestation. All forests of this type that were located further inland were destroyed by agricultural development during the early decades of the 1900’s, in particular to grow sugarcane.
