Abstract:
In the Southeast Nigeria, four species of the genus Pterocarpus have been discovered. The four species are Pterocarpus mildbraedii, Pterocarpus osun, Pterocarpus santalinoides and Pterocarpus sayauxii. They are all trees with compound imparipinate leaves and entire leaflets. The phytochemical result of the leaves revealed the presence of flavonoid and tannins. Flavonoid was distributed as follows: Pterocarpus mildbraedii (0.6 ± 0.2), Pterocarpus osun (0.8 ± 0.2), Pterocarpus santalinoides (1.0 ± 0.3) and Pterocarpus soyauxii (nil), whereas tannin was distributed as follows: Pterocarpus mildbra

Pterocarpus mildbraedii is faced with the problem of extinction caused mainly by deforestation and urbanization. This study was carried out to determine ways to enhance root development and domestication of Pterocarpus mildbraedii in southeastern Nigeria. The first experiment was done to determine the effect of nursery media and stem cutting length on sprouting and growth of Pterocarpus mildbraedii. Treatments consisted of three nursery media; (Standard nursery media, top soil and sawdust) and four stem cutting lengths; (5, 10, 15 and 20 cm). The experiment was a 3 x 4 factorial arrangement la

Three edible vegetables, Pterocarpus mildbraedii (mkpafere), Lasianthera africanum (editan) and Piper guineense (odusa) consumed by people of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria were purchased from Akpan Andem market in Uyo, the State capital. The vegetables were analysed for the presence of anti-nutrients (HCN, tannin, phytate and oxalate), and the effect of heating at 50 °C for 5 minutes, 90 °C for 5 minutes and 90 °C for 15 minutes in water. Tannins among the anti-nutrients, recorded highest level for all vegetables. At 50 °C for 5 minutes, HCN, tannin, phytate, total oxalate and soluble oxalate respe

SummaryChromosome counts of 7 species in 3 genera of the tribe Dalbergieae have been made from Nigerian material. Chromosome numbers for Dalbergia lactea (n = 10), D. saxatilis (n = 10), Machaerium lunatus (n = 9) and Pterocarpus mildbraedii (n = 10) are reported here for the first time. Distribution maps of the species are provided.
