Abstract:
In the Southeast Nigeria, four species of the genus Pterocarpus have been discovered. The four species are Pterocarpus mildbraedii, Pterocarpus osun, Pterocarpus santalinoides and Pterocarpus sayauxii. They are all trees with compound imparipinate leaves and entire leaflets. The phytochemical result of the leaves revealed the presence of flavonoid and tannins. Flavonoid was distributed as follows: Pterocarpus mildbraedii (0.6 ± 0.2), Pterocarpus osun (0.8 ± 0.2), Pterocarpus santalinoides (1.0 ± 0.3) and Pterocarpus soyauxii (nil), whereas tannin was distributed as follows: Pterocarpus mildbra

The purpose of this study is conducting a comparative study on the nutritional compositions of bitterleaf (Vernonia amygdalina) and oha leaf (Pterocarpus mildbraedii), focusing on its phytochemicals and micronutrients so as to determine their nutritional value, the bioactive compounds present in them and relate them to their health benefits. The collected leaf samples of V. amygdalina and P. mildbreadii were divided into three parts each, for the phytochemicals, vitamin and mineral determination. The oils of the grounded leaf samples were extracted using soxhlet extraction method and the phyto

The study compared nutritional content of four most consumed vegetables [Gnetum africanum Welw, Hensia crinita (Afzel) G.Taylor, Lasianthera africana P.Beauv and Pterocarpus mildbraedii Harms] in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Standard procedures were followed in these assessments: Proximate composition (carbohydrate, protein, fibre, lipid, ash and moisture), Mineral elements (magnesium – Mg, calcium – Ca, iron – Fe, potassium – K and sodium – Na), vitamin C and chlorophyll (a and b). The study showed varied proximate composition, mineral elements, vitamin C and chlorophyll contents across the vege

This study centered on Zinc oxide nanoparticles capped with Pterocarpus mildbraedii leaf extracts (PmZnONPs) as a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) ‐ induced hepatorenal toxicity in rats. PmZnONPs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. The FTIR results revealed the presence of various functional groups in PmZnONPs, while the BET showed a surface area of 1.55 mg-2.

Associated gas flaring has several consequences on the environment. This study was aimed at assessing the impact of gas flaring on soil enzymes and plant antioxidant activities from gas flare-bearing communities in Nigeria. Soil and plant samples were obtained from farmlands in Ukwa West and Izombe gas flaring sites, as well as unpolluted site from Olokoro (used as control). The level of activities of soil urease, dehydrogenase, phosphatases, plant antioxidant enzymes and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) of selected plants (Gnetum africanum [GA], Piper guineense [PG], Gongronema latifolium [GL], Pt

The aim of this study was to correlate analytical methods (HPLC and spectrophotometric) in assessing the changes in total β-carotene contents in leafy vegetables during ambient temperature storage (29+2°C) and domestic processing (5 min,100°C.) The vegetables analyzed were: Telfairia occidentalis, Amaranethus hybridus, Talinum triangulare,Pterocarpus mildbraedli and Gnetum africanum. Total–carotene was determined spectrophometrically, while HPLC was used for detailed analysis of carotenoides. Lutein, β -cryptoxanthin and β-carotene isomers were identified and quantified.
