Incadendron esseri K.Wurdack & Farfan, gen. & sp. nov., from the wet sub-Andean cordilleras of Ecuador (Cordillera del Cóndor) and Peru (Cusco, Oxapampa) is described and illustrated. This recently discovered large canopy tree with a narrow elevational range presents an unusual combination of rare morphological characters in Hippomaneae including mucilage-secreting sheathing stipules, conduplicate ptyxis, and large, woody fruits. The broader significance of these characters in Hippomaneae is discussed. The morphology and anatomy of Incadendron were investigated, highlighting its fruit

The recent publication of a monograph on Ceratozamia promised greater taxonomic understanding in the genus. Instead, the plethora of inaccuracies and inconsistencies therein undermined taxonomic cohesiveness. This review critically evaluates the Ceratozamia monograph of Martínez-Domínguez et al. Notably, the proposed lectotypification of C. mirandae is invalidated, the proposed specific status of C. osbornei is questioned, the proposed synonymy of C. dominguezii under C. subroseophylla is rejected, t

SUMMARY This paper studies systematic relationships between two sound changes, the High Germanic Consonant Shift and the West Germanic Anaptyxis. Since the High Germanic languages, i.e., High German and Lombardic, are a division of the West Germanic Sprachbund, it might be thought — and this is indeed the general view — that the more extensive West Germanic change necessarily antedates the more limited High Germanic change. But an examination of the relative chronology of the two changes in one of the languages that underwent both of them, Old High German, shows that, on the contrary, the syst

High rates of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) associated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), as well as their irrational and uncontrolled use for self-medication require continuous updating of information on safety profiles of these products. The aim of the study was to assess the reporting rate, frequency, and severity of ADRs to NSAIDs and paracetamol products, based on data from periodic safety update reports (PSURs) submitted to the autonomous non-profit organisation “National Pharmacovigilance Research Centre”.Materials and methods: the study covered 104 PSURs for NSAIDs and

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the frictional anisotropy of snake scale-inspired surfaces, especially its potential applications in enhancing the bearing capacity of foundations (piles, anchor elements, and suction caissons) and reducing materials consumption and installation energy. This study first investigated the frictional properties and surface morphologies of the ventral scales of Cantor’s rat snakes (Ptyas dhumnades). Based on the findings on the snake scales, a novel snakeskin-inspired geosynthetic reinforcement (SIGR) is developed using 3D-printed polylactic ac

AbstractThe unusual morphological adaptations associated with specialization on a diet of eggs have been used as evidence to justify familial or subfamilial status for the egg-eating snakes, including the African genus Dasypeltis. We evaluate the phylogenetic relationships of Dasypeltis scabra by comparing albumin evolution in Dasypeltis and available representative colubrine taxa using the quantitative immunological technique of micro-complement fixation. We find that Dasypeltis scabra is included among a large colubrine assemblage containing racers (Coluber, Masticophis, Spalerosophis, and P

Phylogenetic analysis of two species of snake Eryxcolubrinus loveridgei and Ptyas mucosus was investigated using the gene encoding cytochrome b. The nucleotide sequences of complete and partial mtDNA cytochrome b were determined in numerous specimens. Sequence divergence between species and genera was evenly distributed in the cytochrome b gene but rather high compared to reports for other fish species. Phylogenetic analyses on complete cytochrome b were used to study the relationships among the considered species. The molecular phylogeny of sample was determined by analyzing cytochrome b gene

Abstract We collected gravid gray rat snakes Ptyas korros from three geographically distinct populations in China, Chenzhou (CZ), Jiangshan (JS) and Dinghai (DH), to study geographical variation in female reproductive traits. Egg-laying dates differed among the three populations such that at the most northern latitude egg-laying was latest, and earliest at the most southern lati-tutde. Clutch size, clutch mass, egg mass, egg shape, within clutch variability in egg sizes and relative clutch mass differed among the three populations, whereas post-oviposition body mass did not. Abstract The diversity of diurnal herpetofauna has an essential role in the ecosystem and is used as an indicator of environmental quality. This study aimed to determine the diversity of herpetofauna species in the southeast slope of the Gunung Merbabu National Park (GMbNP), which is in Ampel Sub-District, Boyolali District, Central Java. The method used in this study was Visual Encounter Survey (VES) in the transect determined purposively around the river, which can become a herpetofauna habitat. Data were collected in the morning session (08.00-14.00 WIB) for six times. This research found 1

Snake (Ptyas mucosa) brains (400 g) were extracted with a mixture of acetone, water, and hydrochloric acid. The precipitate (5.6 g) that formed upon addition of five volumes of acetone to the extract, designated acid–acetone powder, was subjected to gel filtration on Sephadex G-25. A large unretarded peak (SB-1) with molecular weight greater than 5000 and a small retarded peak (SB-2) with molecular weight smaller than 5000 were obtained. They were then separately subjected to ion-exchange chromatography on CM-cellulose. Adrenocorticotropic activity was detected in the fractions by their abilit
