Abstract:
The study investigated the relationship between Organizational Identity and Public and Private Senior Secondary School Effectiveness in South West Nigeria. To put the study on course, three hypotheses were formulated. In the same vein, three separate instruments were designed and constructed to collect pertinent data namely the School Identity Questionnaire (SIQ), the School Effectiveness Questionnaire (SEQ) and Performance Records of Students in West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE). While the first instrument measured identity, the other two simultaneously measured effectiveness. There was a total sample of 2,400 students from 120 sample schools at 20 students per 20 schools in each of the six South West States – Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Oyo. Also, a total of 120 principals participated in the study. The Questionnaires were subjected to content and construct validity as well as split-half reliability test. The reliability coefficient for the SIQ was found to be 0.86 and for the SEQ was 0.90. The data were subjected to descriptive and inferential statistical analysis employing the Pearson’s Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient Analysis to test Hypotheses 1and 2, and the Analysis of Variance to test Hypothesis 3. Results of the analysis indicate that there is no significant relationship between organizational identity and school effectiveness in the two categories of schools separately, public and private. However, a significant relationship was found to exist between organizational identity and school effectiveness in private schools only when WASSCE Results were used as a measure of effectiveness. Results also show that a significant difference exists in organizational identity and school effectiveness between public and private senior secondary schools irrespective of the instrument used in measuring effectiveness. Recommendations were then made, in the light of the results, among which are that some degree of autonomy should be given to senior secondary schools for them to grow and develop their identity and effectiveness and, that the identity and effectiveness should regularly be monitored and measured for school improvement purposes. Key words: organizational identity, secondary school, school effectiveness.

Abstract:
The study examined the relationship between workload of teachers and academic performance of students in some selected secondary schools in Irepodun Local Government. The study adopted correlational research design. One hundred and twenty respondents were picked at random from twelve secondary schools (six public schools and six private schools). The data was collected from respondents via questionnaire and Achievement Test in Biology. Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS) was used to evaluate the data collected between private and public secondary schools; Pearson's Product Moment Correlation and t-test Analysis were used to determine the impact of instructors' workload on students' academic achievement. According to the findings, there was a strong negative relationship between teacher workload and student academic performance. It was further discovered that there was a considerable disparity between students’ academic performance in public and private secondary schools. The findings also suggested that science teachers (Including biology) should only teach in accordance with the directive of 1:35 teacher-students ratio by National Policy of Education, as a result, teachers will be able to manage with the workload's stress. It was also recommended that government and other proprietors of Kwara state under the education ministry should employ teachers adequately as likely to conquer the problem in public schools and also to advance the value of teaching-learning development in secondary schools.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the effect of socio-cultural practices on the English Senior School Certificate of Education (SSCE) results in public and private secondary school students in Kano, Nigeria. Using a case study approach, we explore whether socio-cultural practices might have influenced or constrained student performance in English SSCE results. This case study involves ten (10) participants from ten (10) secondary schools. An open-ended questionnaire was administered to all participants; findings revealed that teaching-related facilities in public secondary schools are not sufficiently available, unlike private schools. Furthermore, findings also indicate that the teacher-student ratio in public secondary schools is higher than in private schools. Students’ attitudes towards learning English language, including the use of social media, has also influenced the English SSCE results. Likewise, the schools’ socio-cultural practices affect the students’ performance in English SSCE exams. It is strongly recommended that the recruitment of additional English language teachers in public schools, and the establishment of more public schools aimed at improving the teacher-student ratio be employed. This would likely provide more active and interactive sessions for students, as well teachers. There is also a need to provide sufficient teaching and learning facilities and equipment in public schools, such as chairs, tables, fans, air-conditioning units, textbooks, computers, projectors, and so on. Public-school stakeholders should encourage the use of English language in English classes.

Abstract:
The Indonesian government has been introducing revitalisation programmes for vocational schools, particularly during the period 2007 and 2011. It has targeted 7 out of 10 senior-secondary schools to be vocational schools by 2025 through new establishment or conversion of established general schools into vocational schools. To evaluate the government policy on the expansion of vocational education, this paperanalyses the effects of enrolment in vocational senior-secondary schools on four labour market outcomes; namely, labour force participation, risk of unemployment, job formality, and income. Using a rich socioeconomic survey from the Indonesian Family Life Survey, we find that public vocational education provides better labour outcomes for females than public general schools. However, no such difference is found for males. Moreover, our results suggest that many vocational schools, especially private ones, performed poorly in terms of their graduate’s job formality and income.

Abstract:
The study sought to ascertain the trends on academic achievement of students in public and private secondary schools in Awka Education zone of Anambra State. Five research questions guided the study. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for this study. West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) scores in 2013/14. 2014/15 and 2015/16 academic sessions were used for data collation. Multi-stage sampling procedure was used to select 15 public and 15 private secondary schools in Awka Education zone. Simple percentage was used to establish the academic achievement trends in public and private secondary schools in 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2015/16 academic sessions. Findings of the study reveal that private school students had a higher percentage of excellent (A1-B3) passes in Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and English Language than public school students in 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2015/16 academic sessions. Although the study also discovered that public school students had more percentage of credit-level passes than private school students in Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and English Language in 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2015/16 academic sessions. This may be as a result of the fact that there are more qualified teachers in public schools due to strict policy of government in employment. The study concluded that teachers of Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and English Language in private schools are more motivated and committed in ensuring excellent performance of their students than their counterparts in public schools. It was recommended among others that, principals should increase their instructional supervision on teachers teaching Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and English Language to energize them in doing their work diligently and professionally, especially in public schools.

Abstract:
Background: Pornography is one of the factors contributing to the decline in productivity among today's youth. Excessive pornography consumption is an issue among today's youngsters. The widespread consumption of pornography can lead to free sex in today's youth, as well as unplanned pregnancies. The purpose of this study is to compare attitudes, perceptions of behavior control, intentions, and actions related to online pornography consumption in adolescents attending public and private schools in Semarang City.Method: This study used a cross-sectional design with 1,844 stratified random samples. Secondary data from the website http://sehariku.dinus.ac.id comprised participants ranging from junior and senior high school (including vocational schools) to university students. The Mann-Whitney non-parametric test was employed to do a bivariate analysis and compare these variables between the two groups.Result: The findings revealed that the majority of respondents were women (55.4%), in early adolescence (50.6%), and lived with their parents (74.2%). Compared to private schools, public schools had better attitudes (mean rank 937.04), perceptions of behavior control (mean rank 950.37), intents (mean rank 932.73), and behavior (mean rank 927.26). However, no significant difference was found between attitude (p-value 0.129), conduct (p-value 0.584), and intention (p-value 0.288). Only the perceived behavior control variable differed substantially across public and private schools (p=0.004). In this regard, private and public schools are primarily comparable. Some private educational foundations must devise an effective method to increase students' perceived behavior control over pornography, at least to compete with public schools.

Abstract:

The paper discusses the challenges facing history teaching in Nigeria. The scope of the study is limited to private/public schools in Oyo State, Nigeria. The study starts by tracing the problem from the advent of missionaries to Nigeria in which their purpose of establishing mission schools was not to teach African history but to evangelize and to produce middlemen who will act as junior officers. The findings show that history as a subject was in the curriculum of both junior and senior secondary school. However, it was removed from junior secondary school curriculum and remained only in senior secondary school curriculum. Though only few senior secondary schools in Oyo State teach history subject due to lack of adequate knowledge by students in learning African history. Also, due to the reviewed policy, history teachers and textbooks are inadequate. Thus, in this present dispensation in Nigeria, African history education is facing challenges in terms of teaching and learning, apparently on the verge of extinction. The paper concludes by stating the methods of teaching history, prospects and challenges attached to it.

Abstract:
The success of efforts in developing students' higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) to face the complex challenges in the 21st century also depends on how teachers implement classroom assessments. Studies on teachers' knowledge and practices have been conducted at different levels of education. However, studies that involved teachers in vocational senior secondary schools are still limited. Therefore, this qualitative study aimed at exploring chemistry teachers' knowledge of HOTS, their assessment practices, and the barriers encountered. Ten chemistry teachers from three public and six private vocational senior secondary schools in South Jakarta were involved in this study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews conducted between August and September 2019. The findings revealed that almost all chemistry teachers believed that providing students in vocational senior secondary schools with HOTS was essential. However, knowledge of HOTS among most teachers was still inadequate, contributing to their unpreparedness in assessing the skills. Misunderstanding about higher-order thinking was also revealed, such as associating higher-order thinking with item difficulties. The teachers in this study considered students' factors as barriers in cultivating HOTS in chemistry learning in vocational senior secondary schools, such as lack of motivation, low academic ability, and lack of reading habits. The teachers also mentioned the shortage of facilities as another barrier that inhibited their efforts in fostering HOTS in chemistry learning. Proper teacher professional development programs are needed to increase teachers' understanding of HOTS assessment and help them develop various strategies for fostering HOTS among vocational senior secondary school students.

Abstract:
The new senior secondary computer studies curriculum for multilingual West African schools came into use in 2015. Since the beginning of its application, there have been few reported studies on the difficulty level of the content as perceived by students, gender equity, and school ownership. The study had two main purposes–to find out (a) the topics in the new computer studies curriculum that secondary school students perceive to be difficult; (b) if gender, and school ownership impact students’ perception of the difficulty of the computer studies topics. Participants were 1,501 computer studies students from nine public and 12 private senior secondary schools in Nigeria and Ghana. About 51% of the respondents were females. Three-quarters of the schools are in urban areas, the rest are in rural locations. Rich qualitative data on the sources of difficulty (unique for this study) are reported. Slight gender differences and marked rural/urban differences were found. Recommendations were made for improving the teaching and learning of computer studies in African schools with the use of Culturo-Techno-Contextual Approach (CTCA).

This study examinedthe effect of school accreditation, education budget, and teacher competence on the quality of high school graduates. The analysis method used was a panel regression through the Fixed Effect Model (FEM) approach, and the data were from 2017-2019. The results showed that school accreditation and education budgets had an effect on the quality of graduates. Also, the implication of this study is that schools need to increase accreditation, as well as the education budget. In terms of teacher competence, the teachers need to improve their competence by taking an active role in organizations, training teacher capacity, and mastery of information technology. Meanwhile, teacher competence has no effect on the quality of graduates in senior secondary schools. Simultaneously, all variables have a significant effect on the graduates quality. The limitation of this study is the data used, regardless of the status of private and public schools. Therefore, studies to compare private and public schools are of particular interest.

The entire population constituted the sample of the study due to its small size. A validated questionnaire with reliability index of 0.63 obtained using Cronbach’s alpha was used as instrument for data collection. The data collected were analyzed using frequency counts and percentages presented in tables and charts. Five research questions guided the study. The findings of the study revealed that some of the required instructional materials are fairly available but are not regularly use by biology teachers. Biology laboratories and instructional materials relating to multimedia are lacking in most of the schools in Talata Mafara Town. Lack of fund for procurement and large class size coupled with lack of in-service training for serving biology teachers were major factors identified to inhibit effective provision and utilization of instructional materials respectively. Based on these findings, the study recommended among others that biology teachers in Talata Mafara Town should make effort in utilizing available instructional materials. Zamfara Sate Government should build biology laboratories and make provision for instructional materials especially multimedia related in all senior secondary schools in Talata Mafara. Professional development of biology teachers should be encouraged and sponsored by government and other relevant stake holders.

Abstract:
Since independence, enhancing secondary education in Ghana has been a major focus of reforms. However, despite these efforts, academic performance in second-cycle schools has not fully met expectations. According to the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education, pass rates in core subjects have improved from 2006 to 2021. However, performance in these subjects still falls below 40%. This persistent underperformance has been attributed to school leadership and their capacity to effectively implement a vision for enhancing teachers’ skills and knowledge. This study examines the moderating effect of human resource development interventions on the relationship between school leadership and academic performance in public senior high schools in Ghana. Grounded in distributed leadership and social learning theories, the study uses a positivist approach to analyze these relationships systematically. A cross-sectional design was employed, utilising self-administered questionnaires to collect data from a target population of 928 public senior high schools listed by the Ghana Education Service as of December 2023. A cluster-stratified random sampling technique selected 2176 respondents from 16 strata. Data was processed and analyzed using SPSS version 27. The analysis included both descriptive and inferential statistics. The study found a positive significant correlation (R= 0.669) between school leadership and academic performance. The study further found that human resource development interventions significantly moderated (R= 0.289) the relationship and strengthened the effect of school leadership on academic performance. The study recommends that the Ministry and relevant agencies appoint competent school leaders to senior high schools. Furthermore, the study emphasises the need for professional development initiatives for teachers. The study advocates for policies that prioritise human resource development interventions and suggests future research to focus on similar studies on both public and private senior high schools, as well as vocational and STEM institutions.

Abstract:
School based management is the main issues in the educational quality improvement of both elementary and secondary education institutions in the world in the last three decades. It is the alternative school management believed to be potentially able to elevate the education quality. In Indonesia, it was introduced as early as the end of 1999 following the enactment of the decentralization policy. School based management, which is seen as a panacea of Indonesian education problems especially from primary up to senior secondary schools, when the 2003 Education Law No 20 was introduced, Indonesia formally adopted a policy of "school-based management" for the quality improvement of its 227.298 public and private schools, and madrasahs (Islamic schools), 47.813.166 students and 3.218.7 54 teachers. SBM in Indonesia is focused on the four aspects of basic education: quality, equality, relevance and efficiency. While international research has not yet proved conclusively that schoolbased management improves student outcomes, but in Indonesia, the experience has been to a certain degree more positive.

Abstract:
English language teaching in Nigeria is faced with numerous challenges resulting in negative academic performance of students at various levels of education. Some of the challenges include unqualified and inexperienced English language teachers, inadequate space allocation for English language on the school timetable, improper teaching methods, lack of English language specialists to teach the various aspects of English, giving emphasis to some aspects of the language than the other among others. The paper takes a look at the confusion of the use of been and being by English as second language learners which might be due to less emphasis given to that aspect of the language during the teaching/ learning process. A test containing 30 questions was administered on two groups of schools- public and private. In each of the schools, some SS3 and JSS3 students were sampled for the study and the results show significant error margins of more 50% in the two sets of respondents. Tables and pie charts were used to show the findings. The major findings of the study show that: the verb forms, ‘been and being’ are confusing to English as second language learners especially at secondary school level; there is significant difference in the level of confusion in the use of been and being by students in public and private secondary schools in Minna metropolis and there is significant difference in the level of confusion in the use of been and being by senior secondary school students in public and private schools among others. Some of the recommendations offered are: the teaching of language forms should be accompanied by numerous real life examples; Language teaching should progress from known to unknown; it is essential to use substitution tables to provide the learner with enough practice on language use; and that qualified English language teachers should be employed to teach English language. These findings and recommendations are expected to improve the teaching and learning of English as second language.

Abstract:
This study aims to understand the historical literacy level of tenth-grade high school students before the implementation of the Kurikulum Merdeka. The research questions posed were: (1) what is the historical literacy level of Tenth Grade Senior High School students? Furthermore, (2) What are the factors behind the history literacy level of Tenth Grade High School students? The research subjects were Tenth Grade students and teachers from 19 high schools in Sukoharjo Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. The method used is an online historical literacy test for students using multiple-choice questions. Focus Group Discussions with teachers are used to understand the factors behind students' historical literacy competence. The test results show that the historical literacy level of high school students is deficient, so they will experience many difficulties in participating in learning using the Kurikulum Merdeka. The reason is that teachers and textbooks thoroughly explain historical material, so the student's task is just memorizing it. Another factor is the influence of Orientalists that narrates national history about foreign activities in Indonesia. All factors made Indonesian history becomes a rote lesson that could be more interesting and challenging for students.

Abstract:
The deployment of character education within Islamic-oriented public boarding schools throughout Indonesia has experienced significant expansion, encompassing both primary and secondary educational tiers. Originally initiated by private entities, this boarding school paradigm has now been embraced by public educational institutions, many of which have emerged as prominent leaders in the field. This educational framework draws inspiration from traditional Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) and prioritizes character development through the integration of religious-humanist principles that are ingrained in everyday practice. The objective of this study is to investigate the framework of character education in state senior high schools that implement the boarding school model. Employing a qualitative research methodology, data were gathered via observational techniques and structured interviews. The results indicate that character education is cultivated through a cohesive and continuous curriculum that interlinks academic instruction with dormitory living experiences. Values are enhanced through systematically organized school programs and are further reinforced by routine dormitory engagements. The institutions also advocate for moral advancement through the cultivation of spiritual consciousness and foster a cohesive culture that bridges academic pursuits with residential life. Furthermore, extracurricular initiatives are utilized to develop not only ethical comprehension but also the social competencies and soft skills of students. These findings underscore the potential efficacy of the boarding school model in promoting comprehensive character development within public educational frameworks.
