Abstract:
The purpose of the following study is to investigate and analyze the significance of the concept of reach in advertising. Furthermore whether its relationship with effect and influence can contribute to further understanding of the concept. Firstly the concept of reach has been analyzed in a historical context. Together with the concepts of effect and influence, its historical meaning has been investigated and presented. Secondly, several interviews with actors in advertising have been conducted. The main purpose of the interviews has been to hear from those in the trade to understand what their views are of reach, and how they interpret its importance. The information gathered in the interviews shed light on how the advertising community has shaped the discourse of the subject. Additionally, the interviews have enabled an analysis of the evolution of today’s different meanings of the concept of reach. The results indicate that the different meanings of the concept of reach are dependent on the surrounding circumstances of advertisement. Furthermore, as a result it becomes evident that as an actor in the world of advertisement one can benefit from understanding its different interpretations.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the different discourses on sexuality put forth by two prominent media-oriented HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention campaigns, Soul City and Love Life, in South Africa, and the ways in which they resonate with youth as they struggle to negotiate their own sexual identities in a rapidly changing society. It uses qualitative methods to consider the struggles of individuals in the personal, interpersonal, and larger social realms and how campaigns speak to them in different ways and, in turn, how youth negotiate their own identities. On the personal level, this thesis considers individual negotiations of knowledge and awareness of HIV/AIDS in the face of campaigns, particularly as they work within certain frameworks of morals and values. Then, on the interpersonal level, struggles concerning conflicting ideals and realities in love and relationships are considered, as are gender issues and the realities of exchange values and notions of responsibility in relationships. Building on personal and interpersonal struggles, larger social challenges involving the influence of traditional and modern values on sexual expression, as well as the influences of popular culture are discussed. In many ways this paper is a commentary on some of the major challenges of being young, but because of this it inherently lends itself to discussions of the challenges that campaigns face as they attempt to speak to youth about HIV/AIDS and where their good intentions might be failing. Furthermore, it also helps to understand the ways that the risk of HIV/AIDS has come to inform discourses on youth sexuality.

ABSTRACT: The present thesis falls within the scope of communication design, in its specific domain of social design. It is our intent to reflect on how an awareness campaign can contribute to civic education by raising awareness to social problems amongst the population. The present study intents to analyse the role of the designer as a key element between communication design, social psychology and biology, with the development of an awareness campaign. It will be performed a literature review on social design articulated with biology and psychology that addresses different communication strategies in awareness campaigns, the issue of pigeon feeding population and the importance of normative social influence in behavioural change. The goal is to understand the most effective way to reach the individuals involved in the problem and to change their risk behaviour, by raising awareness to the problem area. On the convergence of these studies, the intent is to design and disseminate informative material with a strong visual component which will be tested through a focus group with non specialists in order to assess the results and ensure a successful implementation and dissemination of the campaign. With this project we hope to deeply comprehend the communication process involved in awareness campaigns and present an enriched project by the close articulation with other scientific domains, which will add knowledge to the scientific community and enhance future research.

Abstract:
Appropriate e-services as well as revenue generation capabilities are key to the deployment and the sustainability for ICT installations in poor areas, particularly common in developing country. The area of e-Health is a promising area for e-services that are both important to the population in those areas and potentially of direct interest to National Health Organizations, which already spend money for Health campaigns there. This thesis focuses on the design, implementation, and full functional testing of HealthAware, an application that allows health organization to set up targeted awareness campaigns for poor areas. Requirements for such application are very specific, starting from the fact that the preparation of the campaign and its execution/consumption happen in two different environments from a technological and social point of view. Part of the research work done for this thesis was to make the above requirements explicit and then use them in the design. This phase of the research was facilitated by the fact that the thesis' work was executed within the context of the Siyakhula Living Lab (SLL; www.siyakhulaLL.org), which has accumulated multi-year experience of ICT deployment in such areas. As a result of the found requirements, HealthAware comprises two components, which are web-based, Java applications that run in a peer-to-peer fashion. The first component, the Dashboard, is used to create, manage, and publish information for conducting awareness campaigns or surveys. The second component, HealthMessenger, facilitates users' access to the campaigns or surveys that were created using the Dashboard. The HealthMessenger was designed to be hosted on TeleWeaver while the Dashboard is hosted independently of TeleWeaver and simply communicates with the HealthMessenger through webservices. TeleWeaver is an application integration platform developed within the SLL to host software applications for poor areas. Using a core service of TeleWeaver, the profile service, where all the users' defining elements are contained, campaigns and surveys can be easily and effectively targeted, for example to match specific demographics or geographic locations. Revenue generation is attained via the logging of the interactions of the target users in the communities with the applications in TeleWeaver, from which billing data is generated according to the specific contractual agreements with the National Health Organization. From a general point of view, HealthAware contributes to the concrete realizations of a bidirectional access channel between Health Organizations and users in poor communities, which not only allows the communication of appropriate content in both directions, but get 'monetized' and in so doing becomes a revenue generator.

Rawjee, Veena Parboo. "Effective HIV/AIDS communication campaigns : a case study of an HIV/AIDS awareness campaign targeted at young adults at a tertiary institution." Thesis, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/4807.

Full text
Abstract:
This research emerges within the context of rapidly rising levels of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection amongst young adults and the escalation of deaths from the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). This study critically examines the commonly used theories and models that guide HIV/AIDS communication campaigns. However, it notes that the broad ranging theories and models used during HIV/AIDS preventative and care campaigns emphasise communication linearity and individualism and therefore fail to acknowledge culture. In view of the multiplicity of cultural and language groups that exist in South Africa, culture plays a crucial role in HIV/AIDS communication interventions. Failure to acknowledge the cultural context in campaign theory has various negative implications. One is that, because these theories and models are linear, they are sender-oriented. The recipients are therefore unable to identify with the message as they are divorced from the context of its production. Furthermore, because of a lack of engagement by the recipient in the development of messages, retention of knowledge is minimal and this leads to a lack of acceptance of the message. Clearly then, there exists a need for these theories and models to be re-articulated so that they are less linear and individualistic, but rather more flexible so that they may be adapted for application within various cultural contexts. This study suggests that one of the ways of alleviating campaign linearity and including culture is by borrowing Paulo Freire's (1990) underlying principles of participation and incorporating them into communication campaign theory in the form of audience participation. Communication campaign theory would therefore include audience participation as a central component during its planning, implementation and evaluation phases. The appropriateness of this suggestion is demonstrated by applying it to and evaluating a HIV/AIDS awareness campaign targeted at young adults at a tertiary institution in KwaZulu Natal.

Sephakgamele, Lordwick Phetole. "The effectiveness of State of the Province Adress (SOPA) as a public communication campaign in Limpopo Province, South Africa." Diss., 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/26655.

Full text
Abstract:
The dawn of democracy in South Africa ushered an increasing need for government to interact with the citizens. This study assesses the use of the state of the province address (SOPA) as a communication platform to keep the citizens abreast of the government programmes and deliverables in Limpopo province, South Africa. SOPA is broadcasted mainly from the legislature whilst the communities can view the proceedings in identified public viewing areas. Since SOPA’s inception, there is limited academic studies conducted on the effectiveness of SOPA in general and public viewing areas in particular. To fill this paucity of research, this study reviewed the government communication strategy with specific reference to government communication and information systems (GCIS) which emphasises on the need for government to interact with stakeholders at all levels. Using communication effectiveness and stakeholder theories (also called Izimbizo), this study evaluated the planning process of SOPA and citizens’ views on the effectiveness of the public viewing areas. In-depth interviews and survey were conducted with campaign planners and Mokwakwaila citizens respectively. Data was analysed using thematic analysis for interviews and descriptive statistics for survey. This study found that the internal planning process of the campaign (SOPA) is accordingly linked to the strategic objectives of the province, but inadequate funding hinders the longevity of the campaign. It is also this study’s finding that whilst citizens found SOPA to be effective they however feel that government does not do enough to source feedback after the campaign. This study recommends that there could be an exploration of the new media utility to produce more awareness about the campaign in order to accommodate audience that do not use radio and newspapers. The implications on campaign planners is that they should conduct feedback to improve public participation in future government programmes

Abstract:
M. Tech. Language practice
At the centre of the messages and information disseminated to the public, there is language. This study investigated the role played by language when health awareness campaigns are planned by the Department of Health (DoH) in South Africa. The background and rationale of the project is discussed, with special reference to the language speakers in Pretoria, since the study was undertaken in this area. Pretoria is a city occupied by residents that are representative of all South African language groups; namely, English, Afrikaans, Sotho, Nguni, Venda, and Tsonga. This coming together of all languages in one small area of the country has indirectly led to the evolution of a language that has never stopped to grow over the years. This language that has evolved in Pretoria is unofficially called Sepitori (Pretoria Sotho); it has become a language of pride, and the communities in and around Pretoria see it as a compromise between Sepedi and Setswana. Since Sotho is widely spoken in Pretoria, the communities have become so attached to this language that anyone who speaks English around them is seen as snobbish, or an elite who normally doesn't get a warm welcome by the average Pretoria township resident, and they are often labeled 'coconuts'. In the health centres of the city and surrounding townships, health information is conveyed mostly in the English language. Through observation, one may say that important information might be ignored by the people visiting public clinics and hospitals, or they might have little or no interest in reading it. This might be because of various reasons which the study will try to find out, as guided by the language policy of South Africa in the DoH. The concern in this study is the language used for the displayed information. The study attempts to assess whether consideration is given to the language(s) of the locals when health awareness campaigns are prepared.

Ngcobo, Nkosinathi Innocent. "The involvement of the youth leadership in promoting public awareness of HIV/AIDS, and in HIV/AIDS education campaigns : a case study of the University of Durban-Westville." Thesis, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/10385.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the involvement of youth leadership particularly at the University of Durban Westville, in promoting public awareness about HIV/AIDS and in HIV/AIDS awareness initiatives. The aim of the study was to investigate the contributions of the student leaders in initiatives to combat HIV/AIDS. Accordingly, interviews were conducted with leaders of various student organisations at the university. The aim was to test the student leadership's general understanding of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, types of HIV/AIDS programmes and their involvement in them. The study is based on a random sample of 15 of 35 student's clubs and societies and the Student Representative Council at UDW. In addition, five organisations from the university structures were interviewed for the purpose of this study. These included: the Student Counsellor from the Wellness Centre, the Academic Registrar from the University Management, Deputy President of the Combined Staff Association, President of the Academic Staff Association and the Director of the Centre for Educational Research, Evaluation and Policy at University of Durban-Westville. The general finding of the study is that the role of the student leadership and its involvement on HIV/AIDS initiatives has been minimal and unorganised. In response this study presents a number of recommendations to address this problem. The key recommendation revolves around the need for the student leaders and the university management to collectively design a framework from which all HIV/AIDS initiatives will be administered. This includes policy formulation and discussions on AIDS. In the final analysis, it is imperative to note that this study was not done only for the benefit of the UDW community, but other institutions such as the government departments, particularly the Education Department, NGO's, Youth Commission and other youth organisations.

Full text
Abstract:
Schistosomiaisis, commonly referred to as bilharzia is a neglected tropical parasitic water borne disease prevalent in developing countries and is endemic in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The World Health Organisation (WHO) aims to eliminate bilharzia as a public health problem by the year 2020 and as a measure to work towards this goal, the South African Department of Health (DoH) Ugu District, KwaZulu-Natal commenced a Mass Treatment Campaign (MTC) targeted at rural schools to decrease bilharzia infection intensity and prevalence levels. The DOH MTC utilises communication materials to communicate with stakeholders and the public to create awareness of the campaign and bilharzia. This study specifically explored the perceptions of learners towards the communication materials used by the DOH MTC to communicate with the learners in order to generate improvements for the current communication strategy. The ability of an individual to receive information is commonly impacted by the community, social networks and the environment and infrastructural settings of the community. The Social Ecological Model of Communication and Health Behaviour (SEMCHB) acknowledges that such factors may have an impact on how the individual receives information. The study utilises the broader social ecological perspective, and particularly the SEMCHB as a framework for understanding and exploring the perceptions of learners. The study made use qualitative data through focus group discussions, semi- structured interviews and participant observations to gain insights from learners. The study discovered that many incorrect perceptions about bilharzia still surround the learners. The perceived messages communicated through the DoH MTC still need to be communicated with learners, since some learners face challenges in understanding the preferred message. The encoding of the communicated messages through the poster, pamphlet and consent forms is influenced by the individuals social networks hence this study recommends that future communication message are designed with reference to the SEMCHB.
