Full textThe thesis contributes to the area of PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) as a two-layer topic: the first deals with a definition of the boundaries of what is considered as PLM in the market, while, in a complementary way, the second deals with the definition of a reference metamodel for product management and traceability along the product lifecycle. Product and production management have become complicated processes where more problems are overlapping each other's. Product development might ever more take into account improved customers' tastes and requests in a shorter time-to-market. This way, the product lifecycle and its related management are becoming unavoidable key aspects, creating such a “product centric” (or product-driven) problem. The integrated management of all the information regarding the “product” and its production is one of the related questions. One of the main issues concerning with the product management in a wider perspective (along a defined lifecycle), deals with the traceability of the product. The problem of information exchange could easily arise and further standardization efforts will be needed, so establishing a kind of barriers to the diffusion of the same holonic traceability. In order to reduce these further barriers, but ever more in order to improve the currently definition and the study of Holonic product traceability, we are looking to the current situation of enterprise information systems (where product information are resident) and trying to elaborate it in an holonic view, creating a conceptual HMS product-oriented architecture

Globalization has resulted in closer integration of economies and societies. It has contributed to the emergence of a new world order which involves a vast nexus of global and regional institutions, surrounded by transnational corporations, and non-governmental agencies seeking to influence the agenda and direction of international public policy. Health is a center point of geopolitics, security, trade, and foreign policy. Expansion in the territory of health and an increase in the number of health actors have profound implications for global health governance. Accordingly, the focus of the thesis is on endorsing the three core elements of governance proposed by Ackleson and Lapid, which comprises a system of (formal and informal) political coordination—across multiple levels from the local to the global—among public agencies and private corporations seeking to accomplish common goals and resolve problems through collective action. This shift in global governance has been prominent in the health sector with the formation of numerous public-private partnerships, coalitions, networks, and informal collaborations. In an effort to cope with the proliferation of players in the health sector, the World Health Organization has undergone gradual transformation in its governance framework. It is important to examine the evolution of the governance architecture of the WHO, as well as its effective application in the current global environment maintaining the organization’s legitimacy. This study tries to offer a comprehensive account of the WHO’s history, its successes and failures, as well as challenges and opportunities confronting the organization. Embracing public-private partnerships and formal-informal interactions does not simply fill governance gaps opened by globalization, but helps cluster in narrower areas of cooperation, where the strategic interests of multilateral organizations (e.g., the WHO), states, and transnational actors intersect. Global health problems require global solutions, and neither public nor private organizations can solve these issues on their own. The forms of governance based on the Acklesonian-Lapidian definition assist in accomplishing public health goals through shared decision-making and risk taking.

Full textRecognition of antimicrobial resistance as an emerging phenomenon in public health has been a problem worldwide. The abuse in the use of antibiotics in human and veterinary medicine, and agriculture, has caused an increase in the diversity of resistant microorganisms, reflecting in treatment failure. The mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in microorganisms are primarily mediated by genes acquired from exogenous DNA. The dynamics of the horizontal transfer is performed by mobile genetic elements which carry resistance genes. The wide distribution of these structures, such as the SXT element originally isolated from V. cholerae, has contributed to the spread of specific clonal complexes in certain geographical areas. This pioneering study in Brazil researched the presence of SXT elements in the group of bacterial species in environmental gamma-proteobacteria species, determined their structural and functional characteristics, including genes for resistance to antibiotics and the antibiotic susceptibility among bacterial isolates that harbor them. The result was the classification of 43 SXT elements found in Brazil, by comparison with those found in the literature. Among the SXT elements found, four are sheltered by Morganella morganii, unprecedented in the literature. Knowledge of bacterial evolution is an important to establish effective strategies to control and treat infections without increasing the selective pressure on microorganisms, as well as a precise instrument and very important tool to support epidemiological studies.

Full textwas used to determine the severity, the incidence, and location of defects within each house type. Houses less than a year old were found to contain a siginificant proportion of defects for both types of builder. In addition, it was found that HO builders had a mean of 2.74 defects per house and HR builders mean of 2.30 defects per house for the seven-year warranty period. To determine whether there was a significant difference between the quality of housing produced by HO and HR the statistical technique of Chi-squared analysis was undertaken at a 5% level of significance. The analysis revealed that there was a significant difference between the quality of housing procured by owner
builders. In particular, it was found that the important category of workmanship for HO builders had significantly less defects that HR builders, which suggests that HR builders need to improve their managerial practices and the quality of on-site supervision. In essence, this thesis has provided a series of benchmark metrics for latent defects against which current and future legislative programs con be compared for new housing in the State of Victoria. It is recommended that future research focus on the methods for improving the role of the on-site supervisor as they are considered to be the important link in the quality chain.

Full textUrban planning starts to be heavily focused on the provision of adequate networks of urban infrastructures to stimulate a shift towards sustainable mobility in order to alleviate resource consumption and environmental impacts in cities. Nevertheless, the integration of life cycle environmental criteria in the design and management of the urban infrastructures required to support sustainable mobility is usually missing. Given the vast span and increasing global investment in the deployment of new infrastructure, the environmental burden imposed to the urban public space can be significant. This dissertation concentrates on the characterization of the life-cycle environmental performance of conventional designs of (concrete, asphalt and granite) sidewalks and charging facilities for electric vehicles (two-wheelers). Sidewalks are basic urban pavements implemented to support walking and cycling as the cleanest modes of urban mobility. Sidewalks also represent the matrix for the layout of different urban elements required to support sustainable mobility. Charging facilities for electric vehicles represent one urban element being heavily implemented in cities to encourage the electricification of the urban vehicle fleet as a promising strategy to cut oil consumption and pollutant emissions from motorized mobility. Life Cycle Assessment is applied in order to identify the most environmentally-friendly solutions and best practices to minimize the environmental burden imposed to the urban public space, thereby increasing the value of greening urban mobility. The dissertation also looks for solutions to improve the environmental performance of those product systems with high environmental footprint in order to achieve major environmental improvements at the urban scale. On the one hand, the potential for cleaner industrial production of granite tiles used in construction is analyzed from an Industrial Ecology approach (technological improvement, rainwater harvesting and by-product synergies). On the other hand, ecodesign principles are applied in the conceptualization of an eco-pergola (street furniture) that can contribute to support multimodal (pedestrian and e-bike) mobility. As a result, this dissertation provides complete and disaggregated inventory data of the mobilized resources (energy, water, materials) and environmental impacts of the life cycle of each product system, identifies the most relevant hot-spots for environmental improvement and defines a set of criteria and best-practices for sustainability-based decision-making to minimize the environmental burden of the urban public space.

Full textThe purpose of this paper is to find out how a planned organizational change can be measured in terms of formal and informal elements and to present how a measure process can be done. The study is based on interviews and documented evaluations. The formal elements are measured by controlling that the goals for the organizational change are achieved. The informal elements are measured through employee surveys but without any connection to the organizational change that has been done. When the informal elements are measured in an organizational change it is done by attitude measures. To facilitate the measurement of an organizational change it can be separated in four stages, preparation, before, during and after.

Full textAim: Refugees often face barriers to accessing health services, especially after resettlement. The aim of this study is to identify key elements of effective public health interventions that address barriers to health services for refugees. Methods: Key online databases were searched to identify studies published between 2010 and 2019. Six studies met the inclusion criteria: two qualitative, one quantitative and three mixed-methods studies. An adapted narrative synthesis framework was used which included thematic analysis for systematic reviews. Results: Five themes were identified: peer support, translation services, accessible intervention, health education and a multidisciplinary approach. Conclusion: These key elements identified from this review could be incorporated into public health interventions to support refugees’ access to health services. They could be useful for services targeting refugees generally, but also supporting services targeting refugee resettlement programmes such as the Syrian resettled refugees in the UK. Future research is needed to evaluate the impact of public health interventions where these elements have been integrated into the intervention.

Full textThe present work concerns the use of shade elements as architectural elements to block sunlight in public buildings. In a city like Natal, (5o South) the incidence of sunrays in any type of design should be a constant concern for all the architects. Besides, this habit of avoiding insolation in the environment is not a common practice. Within this context, the present work has the objective to dig deep into the knowledge of solar control, studying some cases and verifying its function according to the orientation and the original design of the building, having in mind if the shade elements usually used in the region have achieved their purpose of providing protection against the incidence of direct sun rays. This study considers the position of the shade element (horizontal and vertical), the angle formed between them and the respective facades, and the local of the buildings in relation to their orientation during the summer, winter and equinox solstice. As supporting instruments the solar map of the city and the protractor, for measuring shade angles, were used. It was concluded that in all the cases studied, it was not possible to obtain the maximum use of the elements. It was verified that the best type of shade element (more efficient) for the city of Natal is the mixed type (horizontal and vertical) and that the vertical shade elements are more efficient in the early mornings and late afternoon. The horizontal shade elements are used more effective at midday. We intend to present the results of this study to the architects in the region in order to show them the correct ways of using the shade elements according to the possible orientation on the facade, as a supporting tool at the time of designing a project as well as a subsidy for further discussions on the elaboration of the new urban standards for the city of Natal/RN

Full textThe aim of this research assignment was to analyse and compare the specific governance elements in SOEs in the two government departments. A sample of twenty state-owned entities (SOEs) was selected in total, twelve from the Department of Transport and eight from the Department of Public Enterprises. The literature review on corporate governance in general and in South Africa illustrated the importance of corporate governance in any company. A short summary of the origin of governance is followed by a discussion of corporate governance from an SOE’s perspective. The study highlighted that the board of the entity under discussion was critical in a discussion of corporate governance. The focus, therefore, shifted to the role and responsibilities of boards and the individual members. The size, composition, diversity, remuneration and meeting attendance are the important elements that were analysed as the basis of the research. All the data for the analyses were sourced from the publicly available company annual reports for the 2012/2013 financial year of all the SOEs. Based on the analysis of the research findings carried out in Chapter 4, the following conclusion was reached with regard to governance in SOEs in the DOT and the DPE: - In the opinion of the author, governance elements of independence, ethnic diversity, average age and board meeting attendance compare evenly with each other. - The CEO position on boards from both departments is still male dominated. - There were clear differences with regard to gender diversity and the remuneration of CEOs and chairpersons. In this case, the DPE displayed higher figured in both elements. - There is a strong correlation between CEO remuneration and chairperson fee amongst both departments’ SOEs. CEO remuneration and total assets per SOE also correlate well. This, in the author’s opinion, explains the higher salaries of CEOs and chairpersons at SOEs responsible for import strategic infrastructure like Transport and Energy.

Faced with a scenario in which knowledge has become essential for organizations, and considering the prospect that the organizational culture is strongly related to how an organization creates its knowledge, the present study aimed to analyze the possible associations between the elements the organizational culture of a federal organization of higher education, from the theoretical perspective of knowledge creation process. To accomplish this association, the design models of organizational culture Alves (1997), and the model of knowledge creation of Nonaka and Takeuchi (1997) were used. The participants were 69 technical and administrative staff and 67 serving teachers of the Humanities Center, Social and Agricultural (CCHSA) of the Federal University of Paraíba. A questionnaire on line was applied containing 16 questions related to the sets of cultural elements of Alves model. The collected data were analyzed quantitatively using the chi-square test and factor analysis. Qualitative analysis was performed by means of consultation documents and observation of the organizational environment. The results of the cultural elements pointed to the existence of a slow decision-making process, however rational and participatory, with emphasis on a hierarchical organizational structure. The leaders were considered tolerant of occurrence of deviance and technical flaws in the institution. Training and capacity building mechanisms were satisfactory only for the group of administrative staff. However, co-operation to obtain the knowledge was only emphasized to the group of teachers. Leaders were seen as reasonable people, and the importance given to the hierarchy was considered reasonable. All identified cultural elements were associated with one or more aspects of the process of knowledge creation, especially at enabling condition 'autonomy'. From the analysis, it was concluded that there is a significant association between organizational culture and the creation of knowledge in the research organization. This suggests that understanding this relationship can promote improvements in the quality of institutional management.
