Abstract:
The scale-up of effective or efficacious public health interventions to prevent chronic disease is important if population wide impacts are to be achieved. However, scale-up is complex and doesn’t happen as often as it should. This is despite growing interest in the area of research translation and scale-up by researchers and policy makers and a plethora of conceptual frameworks developed to guide the scale-up of efficacious interventions. The objectives of this thesis are to understand how scale-up may be facilitated within a research translation framework as well as in the real-world by un

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to understand the important components of a set of sustainable interventions to prevent obesity at the community level by using realistic evaluation, which draws on the philosophy of critical realism. From the application of a structured set of criteria based on critical realism, three interventions emerged, which were selected as the case studies of my thesis: the ‘Healthy Weight Communities’ project in Scotland, the ‘Bewegung als Investition in Gesundheit’ (Movement as Investment for Health) project in Germany, and the ‘Walking for Health’ project in England. Abstract:
This study assessed environmental health risk from dioxin in foods and sustainability of risk reduction programs at two heavily contaminated former military sites in Vietnam. The study involved 1000 household surveys, analysis of food samples and in-depth discussions with residents and officials. The findings indicate that more than 40 years after the war, local residents still experience high exposure to dioxin if they consume local high risk foods. Public health intervention programs were rated moderately to well sustained. Internal migration, and lack of clear, official guidance and sensiti

Research Objective: On behalf of the Appalachian Funders Network, with funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, East Tennessee State University and NORC at the University of Chicago documented the current burden of obesity, diabetes, and chronic disease mortality in central Appalachia. An analysis of county-level data was conducted in order to provide a picture of the health condition of the region. This study identified both the magnitude of obesity-related health problems in central Appalachia as well as promising practices, policies and strategies aimed at reducing obesity rates, es

Abstract:
Globally malaria still remains the most important parasitic disease of public health interest. In the recent past, most endemic countries have deployed and scaled up both preventive and curative interventions to reduce malaria transmission and, ideally, eliminate it. This has lead to global reductions in both mortality and incidence of malaria. These declines have been attributed to the reinvigoration of the global malaria control agenda by the explicit ambition of achieving elimination, which has lead to an increase in funding for national control programmes to increase coverage of preventive

Griffin, Stephanie Christine. "Economic Evaluation Of Injury And Injury Prevention Interventions In The U.S. Fire Service." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/332672.

Abstract:
Previous research has shown that firefighters and emergency services personnel are at increased risk of fatal and non-fatal occupational injury compared to other U.S. workers. Analyses of injury and workers’ compensation claims data in this population has demonstrated that injuries are both common and an economic burden on the fire service, especially those caused by overexertion and that lead to sprains/strains. The increased risk of injury is associated with specific job tasks, including physical exercise, patient transport and fireground work, and with personal characteristics such as physi

Abstract:
This thesis attempts to answer the research question: What are the causal mechanisms for behaviour change undergirding choice architecture (CA) interventions in alcohol use? This thesis is organised along two dimensions: conceptual and empirical. At the conceptual level, this project discusses the application of CA to public policy; the lack of consensus regarding the theory of change underpinning the relationship between CA intervention stimuli and modified behaviour; and the need for clearer understandings of the CA intervention components in relation to other behavioural interventions. Abstract:
Background Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), particularly cardiovascular disease, are the leading cause of death worldwide. Excess sodium intake (in the form of salt) is a major contributor to high blood pressure, which in turn increases cardiovascular risk. Based on the totality of evidence showing the adverse health effects of excess salt intake, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended that adults should consume less than 5 grams per day (equivalent to 2 grams of sodium). In 2010, nearly all countries, comprising 99% of the world’s adult population, had mean population salt intakes a
