Abstract:
Science is part of our everyday live; so is art. Some art installations that link the two require the active presence of the spectator. Thereby they help to raise the awareness, promote understanding, and generate an emotional response from the public. This project rests on the public participation model that seeks to explore the connection between art installations and science communication through experiential learning. In order to test the effectiveness of an art installation communicating science two groups were contrasted. The first was exposed to a list of scientific facts; the second participated in the creation of an art installation. The results of this research suggest that art installations do promote long-term fact retention. Therefore, the use of art installations can be considered an interesting method of conveying science in an attractive, reliable, and memorable way.

Abstract:
BackgroundMotor vehicle crashes are the third-leading cause of death to American children aged 1–5 years. When installed correctly, child restraints (car seats) reduce risk of serious injury and death. However, most restraints are installed incorrectly. The current gold standard for correct installation is systematic car seat checks, where certified technicians help parents, but car seat checks are highly underused due to barriers in access, scheduling and resources.MethodsThe present study protocol describes plans to evaluate use of interactive virtual presence technology (interactive merged reality)—joint, simultaneous remote verbal and visual interaction and exposure to the same 3D stimuli—to assist remotely located parents installing child restraints. If effective, this technology could supplement or replace in-person checks and revolutionise how government, industry and non-profits help parents install child restraints properly. Building from preliminary studies, we propose a randomised non-inferiority trial to evaluate whether parents who install child restraints while communicating with remote expert technicians via interactive virtual presence on their smartphones achieve installations and learning not inferior in safety to parents who install restraints with on-site technicians. We will randomly assign 1476 caregivers at 7 US sites to install child restraints either via interactive virtual presence or live technicians. Correctness of installation will be assessed using objective checklists, both following installation and again 4 months later.ConclusionWe aim to demonstrate that child restraint installation is accurate (>90% correct) when conducted remotely, that such installations are not inferior to installation accuracy with live experts and that parents learn and retain information about child restraint installation.

Abstract:
In the first part of this paper we present an overview of photovoltaic devices installed in Poland in the years 1960-2015. In the years 2009-2016, approximately 199 MW in total power of photovoltaic devices were installed. The second part of the paper we focus on presenting the research results on the usage of tracking photovoltaic installations in 2010-2016 collected in various periods of their work. PV panels were installed on the building of the Institute of Electrical Power Engineering of the Lodz University of Technology. In this paper we considered PV installations as an additional source of energy improving the total energetic efficiency of the building via the reduction of energy consumed from public electric and power networks. The installation satisfies up to 30% of annual energy demand of laboratories. However, the break-even period of the system was estimated to be about 30 years because of the high cost of installation.

Abstract:
Yarn has the potential to be monstrous when placed in public places. It can cause controversy, even when carefully planned as a public art installation involving collaboration with business developers and city stakeholders. This article focuses on the fallout from City Hall on one such yarn installation at a public park in Rochester, New York, in summer 2018 and applies the theoretical lens of ‘monstrosity’ used by Nicola Moffat in the book Textiles, Community and Controversy: The Knitting Map. The article demonstrates that while the twelve original tapestries were well received by the Rochester community, they were deemed ‘not natural’ by City Hall and ordered to be removed, despite permission previously granted by a city official. Ultimately, despite the handcraft controversy, this yarn installation ignited a positive community-based response in favour of public art and ‘textile togetherness’, a term defined in this article. And later the tapestries found a second life in a different community revitalization project. The article offers suggestions for future organizers of yarn installations and calls for more public art to be placed in urban areas as the output of community engagement.

Abstract:
Stormwater control measures (SCMs) (i.e., green infrastructure) are advantageous methods of stormwater management. However, studies suggest that urban greening may be associated with gentrification, displacing racially/ethnically minoritized groups due to increased housing costs and loss of feelings of belonging. We studied displacement of racially/ethnically minoritized groups after SCM installation in Washington, DC. We compared the change in percentage of persons in racial/ethnic groups at the Census block group level with varying levels of SCM installation (i.e., area-weighted SCM count at 300 m buffer). We stratified findings by SCM type, pre-installation income, and SCM size. DC installed a higher density of SCMs in areas with a higher percentage of Black and/or Hispanic/Latino residents. Nonetheless, findings suggest SCM installation is associated with displacement of Black residents. The percentage of residents who are Black decreased by 2.2% [95% Confidence Interval: 1.7, 2.7] and 4.1% [95% Confidence Interval: 3.4, 4.8] after low and high levels of SCM installation, respectively. In turn, the change in percentage of residents who are White increased with increasing levels of SCM installation. Compared to ecological studies on SCMs, studies about social impacts are scarce. This research intends to help optimize SCM installations so more residents can enjoy their health, economic, and ecological benefits.

Abstract The article presents the use of photovoltaic installation in a building with office space and a section for kindergarten to support the production of electricity using solar energy. Accepted technological installation solution, capital expenditures to be incurred for the project and payback time are shown. Paper presents the results of the performance simulation of the PV system adopted depending on the angle of photovoltaic panels. Designed photovoltaic installation consists of 62 panels with a total nominal power of 15.5 kW. The use of photovoltaics in the facility allow reducing carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere by approximately 52%. In Poland, most of the electricity produced is still based on coal and lignite. Photovoltaics is one of the renewable sources of energy, so-called “Green” energy. The investment could be made thanks to the Regional Operational Programme Podlaski, Activity 5.2 Development of local infrastructure, environmental protection 2007-2013.

In making the piece, the artist was influenced by the works of others as well as by her own previous works and personal experiences. The theory of deep touch pressure can be extrapolated to associate encapsulation within small, enclosed spaces with relaxation and the relief of anxiety. Through the fluid process of aesthetic development, the work evolved towards completion and fulfillment of the piece's goals. The result was a basket-like structure containing a close and comfortable space for decompression. Geared towards the MIT community, the piece also explored the effects of isolation and connectivity. Viewer interaction, made possible by a period of public display, remains a critical component of this artwork. There are various directions in which to move forward with the investigation, one of which is to explore the dynamics of multiple pieces in a single location.
by Sheila A. Longo.
S.B.

Abstract:
My argument is that documentary texts can be transformed into artworks via the processes of intertextuality and detournement, when they are exhibited as video installations. I argue that early 1920s modernist avant-garde painter-filmmakers shared with contemporary documentary video installation painter-filmmakers particular tendencies, characteristics and interests. The bodies of work in each period explore the generic properties of documentary through (primarily) abstract visual associations, rather than through a conventional linear space. Important 1920s modernist avant-garde films by Dziga Vertov, Luis Bunuel, Salvador Dali, Joris Ivens, Man Ray and others will be considered in highlighting the relationship between documentary and avant-garde cinema. I use this discussion as a basis for examining my own work: for the creative component of this thesis, I filmed and edited a three screen video installation. I interviewed 67 Australian Muslims and used these interviews to explore the use of documentary in video installation. The theoretical framework I used is based on the following: Julia Kristeva?s notion of intertextuality, derived from Mikhail Bahktin?s work on dialogism, to interpret how documentary texts take on conventions appropriate to other genres; Guy Debord?s concept of d鴯urnement to provide a theory for the reuse of pre-existing artistic elements found in documentary film; genre theory to interpret interactions between documentary texts; Ludwig Wittgenstein?s notion of ?family resemblance? to explore the indistinct boundaries of documentary; and Pascal Beausse?s analysis of how artists have hijacked documentary. I also draw on Bill Nichols?s analytical framework of documentary modes (poetic, expository, observational, participatory, performative, reflexive) to explore documentary in cinema and installation art. The documentary genre is not habitually discussed outside film, television, photography or the web. My research demonstrates that the genre has found its place in other areas of artistic practice and can also apply to medium of video installation.

Abstract:
This project is an investigation of visual illusions created through the interaction of light on different surfaces and structures. Illusion implies deception - an optical illusion, in a sense is misunderstood information that creates a 'false' visual reality. This project incorporates macro and non-macro photography to generate illusion through scale and shape. Through deliberate acts of deception the images play on the human desire for mystery. It is through the 'eye of the imagination' that the images reveal themselves. The photographic images are of dioramas created on the top of a light box, using everyday substances and materials such as glass, felt, coloured transparencies, detergents and liquids of varying consistencies. This project reveals the extraordinary in the ordinary. The outcome of this project is a photographic body of work, the product of my experimentation and research, in which the ambiguous content of the composition, compels the viewer to their own interpretation. Translating some of the resulting images into a three-dimensional light based installation of an illusory nature invites people to take on a participatory role, furthering their experience with the artwork. This project makes us aware of our role within the experiential process, ma king us appreciate and question its very nature.

Abstract:
As cyber attacks are an ever-increasing threat to many organizations, the need for controlled environments where cyber security defenses can be tested against real-world attacks is increasing. These environments, called cyber ranges, exist across the world for both military and academic purposes of various scales. As the function of a cyber range involves having a set of computers, virtual or physical, that can be configured to replicate a corporate network or an industrial control system, having an automated method of configuring these can streamline the process of performing different exercises. This thesis aims to provide a proof of concept of how the installation of software with known vulnerabilities can be performed and examines if the software is vulnerable directly after installation. The Cyber Range And Training Environment (CRATE) developed by the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) is used as a testbed for the installations and FOI-provided tools are used for launching automated attacks against the installed software. The results show that installations can be performed without Internet access and with minimal network traffic being generated and that our solution can rewrite existing software packages from the package manager Chocolatey to work with an on-premises repository with an 85% success rate. It is also shown that very few publicly available exploits succeed without any manual configuration of either the exploit or the targeted software. Our work contributes to making it easier to set up environments where cyber security research and training can be conducted by simplifying the process of installing vulnerable applications.

Abstract:
This project involves the examination of abstract, geometric paintings, kinetic sculptures, electronic art and installations that use opticality, perspectival space and colour relationships that destabilise compositional cohesion. Works made between 1964 and 1980, particularly those by Victor Vasarely and Bridget Riley are referenced in the determination of how geometric forms, colour transitions, interactions and juxtapositions have been used to suggest movement. This enquiry includes a review of the usage of planar space and the creation of optical effects. Artworks such as Bridget Riley's Chant 2, (1967) inform new works in which available digital technological processes are utilised. These new works consist mainly of compositions of line and coloured forms and are created in response to the outcomes of the research into the selected works. For example, static works that create movement through the use of colour and geometric form inform the creation of new w ork in media that uses motion. The artworks produced are installation-based works. The works include digital projections and static images that use painting processes as well as digital media. The objective of the project is to produce artworks that reference painting processes and extend explorations into colour usage designed to maximise optical effects and spatial disorientation. The artworks are intended to reflect elements researched whilst maximising the potential for using new media.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Background: In the COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) pandemic crisis that has hit Indonesia since early March 2020, urgent action is needed to overcome the situation while maintaining and improving relationships with customers so that they are still satisfied with the quality of services in hospitals, especially inpatient services. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a significant decrease in the number of inpatient visits at Siloam Hospitals TB Simatupang. This study aimed to analyze the comparison of the level of quality of patient service before and after the COVID-19 pandemic in installation of Siloam hospital TB Simatupang installation. Abstract:
ABSTRACT Background: Hospital Pharmacy Installation (IFRS) was one of 5 revenue centres as well as being the primary support for the hospital which has full authority in managing various pharmaceutical preparations. Therefore, pharmaceutical supplies require careful and precise management through a one-door system. This study aimed to determine the management system and identify the various problems that exist in the pharmacy installation at Kambang Jambi Hospital. Subjects and Method: This study was a qualitative study conducted on IFRS at Kambang Jambi Hospital from August to September 2020. The data were obtained from primary data in the form of in-depth interviews with stakeholders related to IFRS and field observations, as well as secondary data in the form of document review. The data were collected by in-depth interview guide. The data was reported by 5 Whys Analysis diagram. Results: Based on field observations at IFRS Kambang Jambi Hospital, it was found that there were still many problems at almost every stage of pharmaceutical supply management starting from planning, procurement, receiving, storage, distribution, control, deletion, recording and reporting, as well as monitoring and evaluation. When the problem is identified more deeply using 5 Whys Analysis, the roots of these various problems are obtained, namely: 1) There has not been an adequate Pharmacy and Therapy Committee (KFT) in the management of the pharmaceutical installation at Kambang Jambi Hospital, 2) The majority of KFT members have assumed structural positions at Kambang Jambi Hospital so that it does not focus on KFT duties, 3) KFT does not regularly hold monthly meetings and evaluations, 4) The ineffective role of SPI at Kambang Jambi Hospital in monitoring and evaluating IFRS performance, 5) SIMRS still depends on outsiders not always standby at the hospital when there are problems. Conclusion: Re-organized the pharmacy and therapy committee to carry out a continuous review of the hospital formularies to be more effective and minimize medication errors. Abstract:
A study was performed by the Energy Branch of the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center, Construction Engineering Research Laboratory, on behalf of the US Army Installation Management Command under the Installation Technology Transition Program. The focus of the study was related to maintainability and operability issues associated with High Performance Sustainable Buildings (HPSBs). This study was conducted primarily based on information gleaned from telephone and web conference discussions with installation Directorate of Public Works personnel including Operation and Maintenance (O&M) Chiefs, energy managers, maintenance supervisors, and maintenance technicians. Experiences with HPSBs varied from installation to installation. For example, some installations had very positive experiences with photovoltaic (PV) arrays while other sites questioned their practicality due to maintainability problems. One site noted that PV technologies are changing so rapidly that procuring spare/repair parts becomes difficult or impossible when vendors discontinue supporting their older technologies or manufacturers go out of business. Based on discussions with the installation O&M personnel, a table of pro and con recommendations for 25 technologies, which are commonly implemented on HPSBs, was prepared and is included in this report.

Boruchowicz, Cynthia, Florencia López Bóo, Benjamin Roseth, and Luis Tejerina. Default Options: A Powerful Behavioral Tool to Increase COVID-19 Contact Tracing App Acceptance in Latin America? Inter-American Development Bank, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0002983.

Full text
Abstract:
Being able to follow the chain of contagion of COVID-19 is important to help save lives and control the epidemic without sustained costly lockdowns. This is especially relevant in Latin America, where economic contractions have already been the largest in the regions history. Given the high rates of transmission of COVID-19, relying only in manual contact tracing might be infeasible. Acceptability and uptake of contact tracing apps with exposure notifications is key for the implementation the “test, trace and treat” triad. In the first study of its kind in Latin America, we find that for a nationally representative sample of 10 countries, an opt-out regime with automatic installation significantly increases the probability of acceptance of such apps in almost 22 p.p. compared to an opt-in regime with voluntary installation. This triples the size and is of opposite sign of the effect found in Europe and the United States. We see that an opt-out regime is more effective in increasing acceptability in South America compared to Central America and Mexico; for those who claim not to trust the national government; and for those who do not use their smartphones for financial transactions. The severity of the pandemic at the place of residence does not seem to affect the effectiveness of the opt-out regime versus an opt-in one, but feeling personally at risk does increase the willingness to accept contact tracing apps with exposure notifications in general. These results can shed light on the use of default options in public health in the context of a pandemic in Latin America.
