Abstract:
Covering more than 500 titles, both classics and newer publications, this book describes what titles are about and why teens would want to read them. Nonfiction has been the workhorse of many young adult library collections–filling information and curricular needs–and it is also the preferred genre for many teen readers. But not all nonfiction is created equal. This guide identifies some of the best, most engaging, and authoritative nonfiction reads for teens and organizes them according to popular reading interests. With genres ranging from adventure and sports to memoirs, how-to guides and social justice, there is something for every reader here. Similar fiction titles are noted to help you make connections for readers, and ""best bets"" for each chapter are noted. Notations in annotations indicate award-winning titles, graphic nonfiction, and reading level. Keywords that appear in the annotations and in detailed indexes enhance access. Librarians who work with and purchase materials for teens, including YA librarians at public libraries, acquisitions and book/materials selectors at public libraries, and middle and high school librarians will find this book invaluable.

Abstract:
A comprehensive look at today's online book sites, such as Google Books and HathiTrust, that gives you the necessary knowledge, skills, and resources to get up to speed on these amazing digital resources and use them effectively in the library setting. Online book sites such as the Google Books project, the Open Library, HathiTrust, and others are transforming our thoughts on just what a library is and does, and expanding the possibilities of what a library can be. Library staff need to be knowledgeable about these sites, but unfortunately many libraries— particularly those in the public arena—do not have the budget or staff time to learn about these sites and integrate them into their library services. eBooked! Integrating Free Online Book Sites into Your Library Collection fills this pressing need. This book examines four of the largest and most popular free, online book sites. Each is discussed in detail in its own chapter, profiling the service in question, identifying its origins and organization and presenting specific, concrete details that describe how to make effective use its available resources. Screenshots, applicable library scenarios, and sample questions that readers can use to quiz themselves are included. The end of each chapter contains a helpful summary that recaps the main points. Other helpful sites are discussed as well.

Abstract:
A dive–right–in, quick–start guide for busy library professionals who want to build literacy, STEAM, and other 21st–century skills using simple robots in a fun, collaborative environment. Robotics in the library? Absolutely. Robotics can add a new dimension to library programming—one that can help America’s youth build the Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) and 21st–century learning skills they will need to be successful in an international, technology–infused workforce. This book provides a complete guide for launching a robotics program in the library and demonstrates the links between robotics programming and learning. It also includes complete instructions for various program models that employ robotics. Robotics programs are an ideal way for public and school libraries to demonstrate their vital roles as the hubs of community learning, and the subject is universally popular with students as well as parents and industrial funders. The book’s clearly and succinctly written chapters begin by providing the information that librarians will need for stakeholders and to select equipment, then move logically into addressing guided activities and expansion ideas. Children’s librarians, teen librarians, school media specialists (particularly those focused on middle school students), and adult and technology librarians looking to connect with ““new adults”” will find this book useful and appealing.

Kepple, Sarah. Teaching Coding through Game Creation. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216022879.

Full text
Abstract:
This engaging guide demonstrates how easy, fun, and rewarding it can be to teach and learn coding at the library. In our technology-obsessed society, computer coding is a highly valued and in-demand skill, but many people consider it an activity only for technology geeks and educated professionals—even more so to teach coding. Not so, says author Sarah Kepple. In this accessible guide, she explains why you don't have to be an expert to lead coding, shows how easy and rewarding learning and teaching coding can be, and provides step-by-step instructions to help you and your community get started. The book shows how to engage students quickly with learning activities that springboard off of the powerful appeal of video games. The author takes users through activities that introduce popular programming languages—including GameMaker, JavaScript, Python, and Scratch—to create video games, and in the process, to learn coding. These activities, themed around classic and popular stories, appeal to a broad age range—from elementary-age youth through high school and beyond to adults and seniors. Readers will see why school and public libraries are venues ideally suited for coding classes, workshops, clubs, or camps, and they will understand why teaching coding not only meets an important need but also serves to highlight the library's relevance to its community.

Full text
Abstract:
This book offers novice and experienced reference librarians an introduction to tried-and-true genealogy techniques and resources. With the help of four case studies, Simpson outlines a basic starting strategy for conducting genealogy research. Later chapters deal specifically with genealogical librarianship: how to conduct a reference interview, continuing and professional development, and basic resources every collection should have. Charts, screen shots, and examples of public documents are also included; while a series of appendices present the case studies in their entirety. Genealogy is one of the most popular hobbies in the United States, and is heavily researched in public libraries and historical repositories. Increasingly, major genealogy resources are available online at libraries through subscription databases or free on the internet. As a result, librarians face the overwhelming task of helping a large audience of genealogists cope with an ever growing flood of new resources. Stookey, Lorena Laura. Robin Cook. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 1996. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216009481.

Full text
Abstract:
Like Arthur Conan Doyle before him, best-selling novelist Robin Cook has turned from the practice of medicine to that of writing popular suspense fiction. Widely recognized as the Master of the Medical Thriller, Cook uses the medium of the popular novel to address a range of social issues: environmental pollution, gender inequality in the workplace, the risks inherent in the common practice of secrecy in science research, and above all, the ramifications of medicine's transition from profession to corporate industry. This study analyzes in turn each of Cook's medical thrillers, from Coma toContagion. Following a biographical chapter, the genre chapter examines the ways in which Cook's medical thriller incorporates plotting conventions and strategies borrowed from such popular literary genres as the science fiction novel, the murder mystery, and the gothic romance. Each novel is then examined in a separate chapter with subsections on plot, character, and theme. Stookey also offers an alternative critical approach to the novel, which gives the reader another perspective from which to read and discuss the text. A complete bibliography of Cook's fiction, general criticism and biographical sources, and listings of reviews of each novel complete the work. The only study of one of America's most popular contemporary novelists, read by adults and young adults alike, this is a key purchase for schools and public libraries.

Reilly, John. Tony Hillerman. Greenwood, 1996. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216026419.

Full text
Abstract:
Edgar Award-winning writer Tony Hillerman has earned a reputation as a Grand Master of the popular mystery. This is the first full-length examination of his work. One of the most successful contemporary American writers, Hillerman has made his stories of Native American detectives instrumental in understanding modern American life. Through the creation of his Navajo detective characters, Hillerman has given new vigor to the popular genre of mystery fiction with his treatment of the problems of order and identity in modern society. This study examines each of his 13 novels in turn and includes a biographical chapter and a chapter on his innovations in the genre of detective fiction. This careful study of the narrative techniques and thematic investigations of Hillerman's detective fiction illuminates the way he has crafted a new and profound method for understanding the conditions of modern life. A biographical chapter traces the influence of his life on his writing. Individual chapters on his novels are divided into sections on setting, plot, generic conventions, character development, and themes. In addition, Reilly offers alternate approaches—such as feminist criticism or post-colonialism—from which to read the novel, which gives the reader another perspective on the fiction. This study discusses all of Hillerman's novels:The Blessing Way,The Fly on The Wall,Dance Hall of the Dead,People of Darkness,The Dark Wind,Listening Woman,The Ghostway,Skinwalkers,A Thief of Time,Talking God,Coyote Waits,Sacred Clowns, andFinding Moon. A complete bibliography of Hillerman's work, critical and biographical sources, and a list of reviews of each of his novels completes the work. Because Hillerman is considered a serious writer of popular detective fiction and has a wide following of adult and young readers, this work is an essential purchase by public and secondary school libraries, as well as college and university libraries.

Abstract:
Romance fiction is one of the most popular literary genres in America today. New writers are constantly emerging, and students and general readers often have trouble finding current information about their favorite authors. This book provides alphabetically arranged entries on more than 100 contemporary American romance writers. Each entry offers biographical information, a critical discussion of the novelist's works, and a list of fiction and nonfiction by the writer, to help readers enjoy and appreciate the full scope of the author's activity. A bibliography of print and electronic resources concludes the volume. America loves romance fiction. These works are extraordinarily popular among public library patrons and are widely read by high school students as well. Because the genre is so popular, new writers are constantly emerging, as are new works of fiction. As a result, general readers and students have trouble finding information about their favorite romance novelists and their most recent books. Written for students and readers of romance fiction, this book surveys contemporary American romance literature.

Abstract:
Although informational films made for domestic audiences in 1950s Denmark sometimes circulated internationally, their primary function was to instruct the populace about national institutions and infrastructure. They help to shape and renegotiate citizenship and national identity on screen, and mediate new technologies, laws and practices. This chapter examines five such films covering a range of topics: the national rail network, public libraries, home economics training for housewives, careers advice, and sport and leisure. Of these, three were directed by Theodor Christensen, a leading figure in Danish documentary. The production history of each film is outlined and contextualised within the contemporary socio-political developments and innovations which, in most cases, triggered the film projects. The chapter also describes the national network of informational film distribution, including Statens Filmcentral, and the screening of films in a range of venues such as cinemas, libraries and leisure clubs. The distinction in the Danish context between the forfilm (for theatrical exhibition) and foreningsfilm (for use by clubs and societies) is examined.

Snow, Sharon, and Yvonne Reed. Teens Have Style! ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216023937.

Full text
Abstract:
Authors Sharon Snow and Yvonne Reed present fashion as a way to offer a fun and interesting program for teens in the library—and not just for girls. Today's fashion-savvy teenaged guys are just as likely to be eager participants. Teens Have Style!: Fashion Programs for Young Adults at the Library provides an easy-to-follow template for creating popular programs within the public or school library setting that will capture the attention of most teenaged girls. In Teens Have Style!, librarians will find programs they can adapt to their individual style or specific age range of their younger patrons, such as getting ready for the prom, making jewelry, decorating sneakers, creating a ""green"" outfit from recycled materials, and many more. All of the ideas are flexible and can be matched to other educational programs or to fit the library's needs, regardless of its size. For example, school librarians can partner with art teachers to orchestrate a ""Fashion as Art"" program, which challenges students to identify a painting that they like and then to create an outfit that reflects the style and feel of that work of art.

Abstract:
Helps librarians who are not themselves seasoned gamers to better understand the plethora of gaming products available and how they might appeal to library users. As games grow ever-more ubiquitous in our culture and communities, they have become popular staples in public library collections and are increasing in prominence in academic ones. Many librarians, especially those who are not themselves gamers or are only acquainted with a handful of games, are ill-prepared to successfully advise patrons who use games. This book provides the tools to help adult and youth services librarians to better understand the gaming landscape and better serve gamers in discovery of new games—whether they are new to gaming or seasoned players—through advisory services. This book maps all types of games—board, roleplaying, digital, and virtual reality—providing all the information needed to understand and appropriately recommend games to library users. Organized by game type, hundreds of descriptions offer not only bibliographic information (title, publication date, series, and format/platform), but genre classifications, target age ranges for players, notes on gameplay and user behavior type, and short descriptions of the game's basic premise and appeals.

Charosh, Paul. Berliner Gramophone Records. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 1995. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400617560.

Full text
Abstract:
Just over 100 years ago, Emile Berliner invented the gramophone and disc record. This is the first discography assembled of the first disc recordings in the United States. It documents over 3,000 discs, which were sold to the American public from 1892 to 1900. Listings are arranged by catalogue number and cross-indexed by title, performer, and recording date. The gramophone discs are valuable research tools in the study of popular culture, providing objective data about what was offered to the public, and how it was performed. Since this information has never been published, scholars may well find new materials. Berliner's successor was the Victor Talking Machine Company (an ongoing Greenwood discography series). An introductory essay discusses the earliest years of the invention and the repertoire appearing on the discs. Their physical properties are noted and illustrated with photographs of the records. A descriptive bibliography guides readers to other books and articles of interest. Another section lists Berliner Gramophone records that have been reissued on long-playing and compact discs. This volume will be of interest to gramophone record collectors, record archives, and music libraries, as well as to scholars, music students, and buffs.

Avila, Salvador. Serving Latino Teens. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216013044.

Full text
Abstract:
This book discusses library services to Hispanic/Latino teens, highlighting best practices, examining relevant and responsive services and programs, and reframing existing approaches to serving this segment of the population. Latino teens within Generation Y or Generation Z are bilingual and bicultural. As such, these teenagers have varied characteristics that present unique conditions and challenges for librarians. Serving Latino Teens not only explains why providing targeted services to Latino teens is so critical, but it also shows librarians and teen providers exactly how to best reach this demographic. Author Salvador Avila, a noted expert and popular lecturer on providing library services to Latino and Spanish speaking-communities, offers ideas and strategies that can be easily duplicated. Grounded in empirical evidence, this book presents what research has indicated is important to teens, Latinos in particular; demonstrates how to incorporate relevant literature into your services; and describes the cultural, social, economic, psychological, technological, and sexual characteristics of this emerging population. This title will be immensely helpful to public and school librarians as well as social services providers who work with Latino teens and soon-to-be teens ages 11 through 18.

Abstract:
We gathered twenty-two articles from dozens of researchers in this collection and organized them into three parts. The varied themes are broad and general enough to give us an overview of the importance of social research in our universities. The articles talk about newborns and children about their desired well-being and children's literature, about health, social assistance and various hospital care. They also address philosophical themes and popular religiosity and pentecostalism in times of crisis, with an interest in the lives of youth in university residences and libraries, the resistance of blacks and women, in addition to ladies in physical education. Not omitting social themes in the health crisis, such as the fatigue of health professionals, the suffering and courage of hemodialysis patients, and about the street populations and life reports of “sex workers”. With pertinent essays analyzing this health and social crisis, the collection includes articles that deal with neoliberalism, reforms, labor and public social security, the elite project "education for everyone" and the necessary criticism of the World Bank's educational guidelines, the new international ministry of education, revealing policies elaborated on the anti-social perspective of financial capital. They reveal and denounce fascism once again, historical racism and religious conformism.

Abstract:
Focusing on the most compelling titles across the vast area of imaginative fantasy and science fiction literature and media, this book showcases creative ways to build on existing interest in these genres and promote reading, literacy, and critical thinking. Science fiction and fantasy stories captivate the imaginations of youth and adults–even today, when real-life technological developments often border on unbelievable. We see evidence of the universal appeal of sci-fi and fantasy-themed tales in popular books, movies, and television series–from The Hunger Games, The Martian, and Star Wars to Jessica Jones and The Man in the High Castle. This guide provides avenues for making use of what naturally interests young audiences pre-teen through emerging or new adult with some 50 programs based on speculative fiction. For each of the literature-based programs, the book provides a description of the project that identifies the appropriate age level and its goals and learning objectives as well as the duration of time and materials needed. While the selection of titles is diverse, special emphasis is given to media and books created by women and people of color. The step-by-step directions, annotation of the book on which the project is based, list of related titles, and special tips ensure that you'll be able to easily implement the program in your classroom or library. Most of the programs have a technology-related component but can be adapted to be done as traditional crafts. All of the programs are appropriate for students in English and creative writing classes as well as for youth or young adults in a public library setting.

Garson, Helen S. Tom Clancy. Greenwood, 1996. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216026341.

Full text
Abstract:
Tom Clancy is the superstar of techno-thriller writers, not only in sales but in the loyalty of his fans, among whom presidents and vice presidents are numbered. To read a Clancy novel is to begin to know the writer himself and his alter ego, Jack Ryan. This, the first book-length critical study of his work, examines both the work and the man who is reflected in it: his knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes. In Clancy's eight novels, discussed and analyzed in separate chapters, we see both the emerging hero and the changing author. Garson provides close examination of each of Clancy's eight novels, helping the reader with explication of Clancy's wide-ranging and often difficult subject matter. One of the most topical contemporary writers, Clancy has written of the Cold War, terrorism, the Vietnam War, the drug culture, and trade wars. A biographical chapter discusses Clancy's life and career and the critical response to his work. A chapter on genre places Clancy in the popular tradition. Each novel is examined in a separate chapter, with sections on plot development, characters, style, and themes. Garson also offers an alternative critical approach to each novel, which gives the reader an additional perspective from which to read and analyze it. A complete bibliography of Clancy's work, critical sources, and a listing of reviews of all his novels complete the work. Clancy's popularity with adults and young adults makes this an essential purchase for school and public libraries.

Pringle, Mary Beth. John Grisham. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 1997. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400674563.

Full text
Abstract:
With his seven legal thrillers, all published since 1989, John Grisham has won a huge following of readers and set a standard few contributors to the genre can match. Because of the success of his novels, the legal thriller is the most popular genre in American fiction today. In this study, Pringle explains how Grisham's legal thriller evolved from the thriller tradition and borrowed from the heroic romance novel, gothic novel, crime novel, and detective fiction. She shows how his novels examine contemporary social and legal problems that do not have simple solutions—ecology, ethnic relations, capital punishment, corporate greed, and health insurance—and how he depicts both the legal system and lawyers in their best and worst lights. Following a biographical chapter that focuses on Grisham's childhood in Arkansas, education, political career, and development as a writer, Pringle examines the legal thriller, its antecedents, and Grisham's contribution to the genre. An individual chapter is devoted to analysis of each of his novels. Each chapter synopsizes the novel, discusses its reception by critics, and features sections on plot development, character development, social/historical context and issues, and an alternative critical perspective from which to approach the novel, such as psychoanalytic theory or feminist criticism. The work includes a complete bibliography of Grisham's work, critical sources, and list of reviews of all of his novels. Because of Grisham's popularity with adults and young adults and the contemporary issues he raises, this study is valuable to students, book discussion group participants, and other interested readers, and is an essential purchase for school and public libraries.

Macdonald, Gina. James Clavell. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 1996. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400673504.

Full text
Abstract:
Until now, popular novelist James Clavell has not been recognized for his literary achievements and his contributions to cross-cultural understanding. This critical study seeks to rectify that omission. It shows how Clavell's depiction of cross-cultural encounters of Westerners with the East paves the way for modern multicultural studies. His novels about culture clash help Western readers see with Eastern eyes by taking them into the minds and culture of the Chinese, Japanese, and Iranians. The study provides close textual analysis of each of his novels in turn and shows how Clavell contrasts the manners, values and lifestyles of Easterners and Westerners in a narrative style that combines a number of literary genres and traditions to create a blockbuster of breadth and depth. This study analyzes all of Clavell's fiction: King Rat, Tai-Pan, Shogun, Noble House, Whirlwind, and Gai-Jin. Each chapter discusses one novel and is divided into sections on plot and structure, character development, themes, historical foundations, genre conventions, and alternative perspectives from which to read the novel. A biographical chapter illuminates the influence of Clavell's life experiences on his writing. A chapter on his literary heritage discusses the influence of a variety of genres on his fiction and shows how he weaves a multiplicity of genre threads into a subtle, complex, inviting tapestry of Eastern and Western styles. A genealogy table schematizing the complex family relationships that interlock Clavell's novels and a glossary of foreign language words used in his novels will help the reader to move easily through his canon. This work will help students and general readers to appreciate the cross-cultural aspects of the craft of Clavell's fiction. A key purchase for secondary school, public, and community college libraries.

Roberts, Robin. Anne McCaffrey. Greenwood, 1996. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400613159.

Full text
Abstract:
The first woman to win the Hugo award (given annually by the World Science Fiction convention) and the Nebula award (given annually by the Science Fiction Writers of America), Anne McCaffrey has invented many worlds of science fiction that have made her work enormously popular. Her seriesThe Dragonriders of Pernhas become one of the most widely read series in science fiction history. This is the first complete critical study of her work. It examines all of her novels to date, both individual and series, and reveals why she deserves the critical recognition and popularity her works have received. Roberts explores the range and complexity of her novels and the recurrent themes that have attracted so many young adults to her work: the heroine as outsider, the need for tolerance and the acceptance of difference, the importance of living harmoniously with nature, and the value of art and literature. McCaffrey's contributions to science fiction are many, including the creation of scientifically engineered dragons, brain ships, and scientifically explained mental powers such as telepathy and telekinesis. Roberts shows how McCaffrey's extrapolation of science raises social issues and causes us to think about the future. Each chapter in this study deals with an individual novel or series and features sections on genre, plot, theme, and character development. In addition, Roberts defines and applies a variety of theoretical approaches to the works—feminist, Marxist, environmental, psychoanalytic, and mythic—to widen the reader's perspective on the works. The study also features a chapter on McCaffrey's life, including an interview with the author, and a chapter defining the science fiction genre and McCaffrey's place in it. A complete bibliography of McCaffrey's fiction and bibliography of reviews and criticism complete the work. Because of her great popularity among teenagers and adults, this study is a necessary purchase by secondary schools and public libraries.

Full text
Abstract:
This is the first and only ready-reference source on the Reagan-Bush years, 1980-1992. No other single volume provides readily available and concise information on the key developments and figures of this period. Organized A-Z, it features over 250 entries on key personalities, issues, events, political and governmental developments, foreign and domestic concerns, laws, terms and catchphrases, and social and cultural trends of the era. Entries are 100-1,000 words in length and conclude with a list of suggested readings. The work also features a chronology of events, statistical charts and tables, and photographs and is thoroughly cross-referenced in boldface for ease of use. The organizing principle of the work is a focus on individuals and events that directly relate to Presidents Reagan and Bush and their administrations. In addition there are entries on social trends, world events, and popular culture. The book presents a balanced account of the Reagan-Bush years. Entries favor description over judgment while at the same time offering a sense of the controversy that surrounded and in some cases still surrounds the events and actions of the Reagan-Bush presidencies. Biographies of key figures in their administrations, Supreme Court appointments, related players on the national and world stage, summaries of significant pieces of legislation, and balanced analyses of their domestic and foreign policies are featured. Entries also include many terms and catchphrases such as Reaganomics, No New Taxes, and A Thousand Points of Light. This is the perfect first-stop for information on all aspects of this important period in American history and will fill a gap in public and high school library reference collections.

Abstract:
One of the most prolific and popular contemporary novelists, Stephen King has a devoted following of captivated readers. This is the first critical work on King to examine his most recent novels,Dolores Claiborne,Insomnia, andRose Madder, and to analyze the many threads of his fiction in a way that is accessible to young adults and general readers. It is designed to help the reader understand the carefully organized narrative structure of his novels, the relation of his fiction to the horror and science fiction genres and to each other, character development, and stylistic and thematic concerns that recur and evolve throughout his work. Following a biographical chapter that links his life to the development of his fiction, Russell offers an overview chapter on all his novels. Individual chapters examine nine representative novels: in addition to the three mentioned above, Russell examinesSalem's Lot,The Shining,The Stand,The Dark Half,The Dark Tower III: The Waste Lands, andNeedful Things. A complete bibliography of all Stephen King's work, critical sources, and a listing of reviews of the novels examined in depth complete the work. Each chapter deals with one novel and includes sections on plot and narrative structure, character development, and thematic concerns. While concentrating on the elements of each novel, Russell also draws comparisons to other novels in King's canon and points out their developmental relationship. She shows how King uses horror, science fiction, and suspense to explore human relationships, how he expands traditional approaches to genre by combining elements of the various genres in his fiction, and how he has continued to grow as an artist throughout his career. Each novel is also examined from an alternative critical approach, which offers the reader an additional perspective from which to read it. Because it is the only critique of King to deal with his recent novels and has been designed for young adults and general readers, this critical companion will be a key purchase for school and public libraries.
