Abstract:
AbstractThis article aims to analyse the presence of and relationship between the most relevant comparative social research thorough international surveys and public policies reflected in the different official bulletins or gazettes of the countries of southern Europe, specifically Spain, Portugal and Italy. Following a consideration of the process of globalisation of research through surveys, four surveys were selected (Eurobarometer, World Values Survey, International Social Survey Programme, European Social Survey). The complex relationships between public opinion and public policy were also addressed. Finally, it is concluded that the most prominent international surveys have little or no presence in public policies in the countries analysed.

Abstract:
In intense forms of public consultations, select groups of citizens, called mini-publics, are given a large amount of information and then asked to deliberate on policy directions and make recommendations. Government officials may refuse to act upon these recommendations, unless they are convinced that the recommendations have wider support in the populace. This article presents the results of two survey-based experiments that assess the impact of mini-publics on the opinions expressed by random digit dialing samples of the general public. The survey-based experiments were conducted in 2013 (n = 400) and in 2014 (n = 400). Being informed about the mini-publics affected support for some policies, but not others. In both studies, respondents who were informed about the mini-publics reported higher levels of political efficacy compared to the condition where respondents were not informed about the mini-public. Hearing about these mini-publics helps to generate a sense of legitimacy in the political system.

Abstract:
Abstract The quasi experiment of deviations from normal temperatures shows how local temperature conditions bias selected survey results. Responses in eight CBS News surveys from 2001 to 2007 change with the weather, with unseasonable temperatures reducing concern about climate change and unusually warm temperatures increasing presidential approval. Unusual temperatures also influence who answers surveys; wealthier respondents are overrepresented in warmer conditions. These results jointly suggest that surveys are at risk for temperature-induced response bias. Weighting-based methods can account for survey results’ temperature-induced differences in samples.

Teh, Serene P. "A public survey on electroconvulsive therapy." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2004. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/798.

Full text
Abstract:
Health care professionals have debated the use and effects of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for more than 65 years. Yet, the attitudes towards, and knowledge about, ECT have not been thoroughly researched within the Australian community. There is also little empirical research documenting ECT recipient characteristics, the number of ECT administrations and the number of patients treated. This study aimed to develop an Australian perspective on: (1) the level of Public knowledge about and attitudes towards ECT and (2) the practice of ECT. The objectives were achieved through the development of questionnaires, and the distribution of these questionnaires to the public to survey knowledge about and attitudes towards ECT. The Mental Health Information System (MHIS) together with data of some State psychiatric hospitals, was examined in order to estimate the characteristics of ECT recipients, and the frequency of the practice. Results from 379 questionnaires indicated that more than 60% of respondents have some knowledge about the main aspects of ECT. Furthermore, participants were generally opposed to the use of ECT on individuals with psychosocial issues; children; and those who refuse to have ECT. This study showed that public perceptions of ECT were mainly negative. Furthermore, this thesis revealed that most WA ECT recipients were adult females who were diagnosed with affective disorders. ECT usage appeared to be a constant proportion of the psychiatric population in WA over a five-year period, although the number of ECT recipients rose dramatically each year. The findings of this thesis suggested that clinicians should ensure that individuals recommended for ECT are at least knowledgeable about basic ECT processes and their implications. With this basic awareness, individuals would then be able to give informed consent. Another recommendation was that a more comprehensive State ECT register be created. This would allow more accurate estimations of the number of ECT administrations in future, and facilitate more effective and efficient monitoring of ECT practice. Overall, it was anticipated that the result of this thesis would contribute towards the prescribing practice of clinicians, and direct mental health education programmers, researchers and policy makers.

Abstract:
Mestrado em Engenharia de Computadores e Telemática
An important aspect in improving public transport efficiency is collecting information regarding traveler routes, usually represented as an OriginDestination (OD) matrix. Most public transportation systems implement fare collection systems that can provide the accurate origins of traveler routes but not accurate destinations. In this dissertation we look at WiFi, more specifically 802.11 data-link layer, as a candidate to provide OD matrix estimations. We present an algorithm capable of collecting information regarding Wi-Fi capable devices inside the bus complemented with positioning and time. A system is also presented to implement this concept using minimal requirements. An implementation of this system was deployed in a public bus to collect data for several weeks. This resulted on over 15000 traveler routes collected in 9 different days. This data was contextualized and mapped to an OD system in order to demonstrate how it can be used to generate OD matrix estimations.

Abstract:
Innovations in computer technologies have provided the ability to access information from all over the world by the stroke of a finger. These technologies have given birth to the growing practice of telecommuting. There is much research available on telecommuting. However, there is a lack of research on this phenomenon in the public relations sector. This study seeks to fill this void by investigating the telecommuting behaviors of public relations professionals and providing a foundation from which further studies can be built. Survey questionnaires were completed by 122 Public Relations Society of America members. The questionnaires contained measures regarding perceived relative advantages of telecommuting, demographic variables, and telecommuting behavior. There were many important findings from the study. Interestingly, telecommuting is in the late majority phase of the diffusion process. It is also gender related. Surprisingly, this study found more men are likely to telecommute than women. Certain variables were found to be associated with telecommuting. Specifically, selfemployed individuals and those with more years in PR were more likely to telecommute. Most of the PR professionals who reported telecommuting did so in an unstructured manner. The main reason reported for telecommuting was to complete their unfinished work from the office. The majority of PR professionals did view telecommuting as valuable. However, here were differences in the perceptions of relative advantages with full- or part-time telecommuting. The advantages of full-time telecommuting only appeared to be attractive to those individuals who presently telecommute. Over two-thirds of the respondents who did not telecommute were found to be interested in telecommuting on a part-time basis. And most PR professionals, whether telecommuter or not, believed telecommuting will become a standard practice in the future.

Abstract:

This paper utilizes survey data to compare several non-survey methods of modeling the economic impacts of biofuels plants. It examines differences in the input coefficients derived from the survey versus the trade coefficients generated through the non-survey methods. It finds that of the three non-survey methods examined, the Swenson (2006) scenario input coefficients most closely represent those found in the survey based on the performance of the non-survey scenario input coefficients in a variety of statistical tests. Further, it examines the economic impacts (multipliers) generated by these scenarios compared to those generated from the survey. Based upon statistical tests of the multipliers, the Swenson scenario’s estimated impacts most closely represent the impacts derived from the survey.

Abstract:
This study investigated the perceptions of influential relationships between Texas public university presidents, university system chancellors, and state legislators. The study's purpose was to examine Texas public universities engagement in lobbying type behaviors and whether public policy is affected through interaction and communication with legislative leaders. Moreover, of importance for this study was to identifying if Texas public universities actively work to influence the Texas legislature and if lobbying behavior exists whether or not that behavior influences public policy formation within the Texas legislative process. Lastly, this study focused on perceptions dealing with the Texas statute prohibiting state governmental agencies, including public universities and university systems, from influencing legislation through use of state funds. The study was conducted in the winter of 2003 and had 29 president / chancellor respondents and 88 legislator respondents. Three survey instruments were developed by the researcher to determine Texas public university president, system chancellor, and state legislator perceptions and attitudes concerning lobbying type activities, influence, and state statute compliance. Data reported consist of percentages, t-Test of significance, and Cohen's d effect size measure. Results from the study show agreement between the groups in areas of activities utilized to influence the legislative process and actual influence of public policy. Disagreement within statute compliance was reported between the groups.

Abstract In 1985, the Body Division of the Automotive Corrosion and Prevention Committee of SAE (ACAP) concluded that an automotive body corrosion survey for public consumption was needed. The committee proceeded to develop a survey methodology and conducted surveys in the Detroit area every second year starting in 1985. The survey is a closed car parking lot survey of nineteen panels or partial panels checking for perforations, blisters and surface rust. Similar surveys have and will continue to be conducted at biyearly intervals for comparison purposes to track the results of industry wide corrosion protection "improvements". This is a report of the results of the first three surveys.

Abstract:
This survey research outlines the development of tools, the determination of sample groups for data collection in surveys, the monitoring of media access, and the public’s opinion regarding the role of public media. The tools used in the survey include the following: (1) A survey form for evaluating media access and the role of public media; and (2) Interview guidelines for specific groups. All tools were quality-checked, tested, and refined over three rounds to ensure they were suitable for tracking surveys and monitoring. The sample group for the survey in this research consists of a total of 8,695 people age 15 or over, residing in five regions of Thailand: Bangkok and vicinity, Central Region, Northern Region, Northeastern Region, and Southern Region. The sample includes members of the general population who consume public media, as well as specific groups such as the Voiceless group, Civic Citizen group, and Opinion Leader group. The process of developing the tools and defining sample groups underwent rigorous academic procedures, including three rounds of pre-tests and real-world testing over the course of one year. Results from these tests were reviewed, compared, and adjusted to create a reliable tool for evaluating media access and the role of public media in the third round. After developing the tools and defining the sample groups for the survey, and after real-world testing, a summary and proposal for a tracking survey framework for Thai public media are also presented.

Abstract:
Background: Adolescence as transitional period from childhood to adulthood is marked with numerous changes: intensive growth and development, psychological and biological maturation. These changes directly or indirectly affect health-related behaviours that may represent risk factor for adolescent health. Surveys are needed not only to identify health risks in adolescents but also to better understand context in which they occur allowing for evidence-based health promotion and prevention. Methods and Objectives: Data were obtained from available nationally-representative studies: Health interview survey (2000, 2006, 2013, 2019) and Health behaviour in school-aged children survey (2018 and 2022). Data on diet habits, frequency of intake of different food items, nutritional status, frequency, and intensity of physical activity were reviewed. Results: According to available survey data, overweight and obesity prevalence among adolescents is on the rise: HBSC data show increase from 17.2% in 2018 to 18.9% in 2022 while National Health Interview Survey 2019. shows that 26.4% of adolescents aged 11-15 are either overweight or obese. Despite the fact that according to both surveys majority of adolescents regularly eat breakfast, less than 40 % meet recommendations for daily intake of fruit and vegetables. More than one third of adolescents eat sweets and drink soft drinks at least once a day. At the same time available surveys confirm that sedentary lifestyle dominates adolescent lives with less than third of the adolescents meeting recommended one hour of physical activity daily. Conclusions: Survey results highlight health risk factors that require further public health action and call for multisectoral cooperation.

UK, Ipsos. Survey of public attitudes towards precision breeding. Food Standards Agency, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.ouv127.

Full text
Abstract:
The Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding) Bill is currently going through Parliament. Although this bill is ‘England only’ and food and feed safety and hygiene is a devolved issue, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) will introduce a separate regulatory framework for precision bred organisms (PBOs), should the Bill become law. The FSA will also work with stakeholders in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to ensure consumers’ interests are protected in relation to PBOs. The FSA / Food Standard Scotland (FSS) is science and evidence led. In August 2022, the FSA and FSS commissioned Ipsos UK to conduct a two-phase social research project on precision breeding. Phase One, now complete, involved a survey of 4,177 UK residents with robust samples in each UK nation to allow comparisons between and within nations. Phase Two, scheduled to start in September 2022 and report in early 2023, will comprise a series of Citizens’ Forums in England, Wales and Northern Ireland(footnote 1). The overall aims of this project are to: explore consumer attitudes towards precision breeding gather consumer views on the FSA’s proposed regulatory framework understand consumer information needs inform how to communicate with consumers about precision breeding. This document presents interim findings for this project, reporting descriptive data from Phase One. Phase One’s core aims were to provide a snapshot of consumers’ awareness and self-assessed knowledge of precision breeding, its perceived acceptability, risks and benefits, and consumer appetite for information about this production method. These data show that awareness of precision breeding is very low, something which should be borne in mind when considering these findings. While these data reveal that there is a general openness to trying precision bred foods across the UK, with more people anticipating benefits than disbenefits from the use of precision breeding, there is a large degree of uncertainty about what impact precision bred foods may have on the different parts of the food system. This is reflected in the relatively large proportions of people taking a neutral stance or indicating they do not know enough to answer survey questions and in the strong appetite expressed for information about precision breeding to be provided. The next phase of this project will be essential for the FSA’s ability to interpret these findings’ implications, and to understand what is informing consumers’ views. The purpose of Phase One has always been to let the FSA know ‘what’ consumers think about precision breeding; Phase Two’s purpose is to build our understanding ‘why’ they think it. This will allow the FSA to develop a more nuanced understanding of consumers’ needs and incorporate this into the design of the future regulatory framework and any engagement with consumers on precision breeding. FSS will be carrying out further research in Scotland.

Abstract:
This deliverable synthesizes the first results on public perceptions of marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) methods from a cross-country survey in Canada, China, France, Germany, Norway, and Taiwan. The purpose is to inform the other work packages in OceanNets and stakeholders about our results in a timely and brief manner about the ways members of the public view marine CDR specifically. The survey was fielded in April 2023, has approximately 2000 observations in each country, and aims to be representative for the population active online in the respective country. It covers the marine CDR approaches ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE), macroalgae farming with BECCS (mBECCS) or macroalgae farming with biomass sinking. Our analysis found notable differences in perceptions of the three methods and between the countries. OAE received the largest shares of negative assessments in all countries, mBECCS received the highest shares of positive assessments. Overall, respondents in the Asian countries assess ocean-based CDR approaches more positively than respondents in Western countries. We also find differences in self-reported familiarity. In Western countries, a majority (55-84%) report never having heard of these approaches; in Asian countries, a majority (56-75%) report having heard of the approaches before. Results on the associations with the methods confirm the results for the general question and add more nuanced insights into how the methods are perceived. The survey also included an experimental design that indicates a potential spillover effect, wherein presenting OAE first negatively influenced perceptions of the subsequent technology.
