Abstract:
The author starts by revising the concept of public service, highlighting the idea of publicatio as an important element. With this taken into consideration, he points out that it is not possible to understand the concept of public service without the presence of ownership by the State. In this context, the concept of essential service arises as a technique that harmonizes social demands and the traditional conception of public service. All in all, these concepts are materialized to affirm that the nature of the service of drinking water and sanitation is of essential service, developing and applying its principles to the concrete case.

Abstract:
In commenting on the work of Kelly, Bannister and Fransella (1980: 53) note that research may be defined as the process whereby people try to make sense of things. In order to achieve this, the importance of working with rather than on subjects is stressed as is the need for researchers to explicitly state, as far as they are able, the constructs within which they believe themselves to be working. Cohen et al note that critical theory and critical educational research have a substantive agenda: for example, examining and interrogating: the relationships between school and society - how schools perpetuate or reduce inequality; the social construction of knowledge and curricula, who defines worthwhile knowledge, what ideological interests this serves, how power is produced and reproduced through education. (2007: 27) Underlying both of these assertions is the implication that in order effectively to look outwards, the researcher must be prepared to look inwards; in order to move forwards, one must critically assess the past. Such a project requires critical thinking, that is, thinking that embodies the attributes of `quality' thinking based on a sound knowledge of context and resulting in reasoned judgements regarding what to believe and how to act.
Recently, several initiatives have emerged with the aim of strengthening the transparency of public administration by publishing data on the Web, known as Government Open Data. This type of initiative allows citizens to remain informed about the government’s management, allowing monitoring the public administration in order to contribute to the increase of citizen oversight power. Data Open Publication is generally carried out by means of systems for cataloging data such as: a Comprehensive Knowledge Archive Network Platform (CKAN). In addition to the data catalogs, Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and Web services can also be used to facilitate access to the data. Despite the large number of initiatives aimed at providing data on the Web, there is still no consensus on the best way to accomplish this task. However, regardless of the chosen strategy, it is important that the processes used to publish data to the web and maintenance of these data are carried out automatically and so that each of its activities can be reproduced when necessary. In this context, this paper proposes a Restful API approach, based on a set of Web services to facilitate the publication and consumption of open data.

The aim of the research is to study the scientific production of the brazilian university doctorate professors available on independent publishing platforms. The independent publication consists of the publication of any book or multimedia resource by the author without the intervention of a third party established as an editor. The specific objectives are: identify the Brazilian publishing platforms, identify the professors who have published scientific books in the last 10 years in these platforms and to verify the characteristics of this production. As a methodological strategy, a sample was adopted, using as empirical universe the Brazilian doctorate teachers enrolled in five Brazilian publishing platforms. To meet the proposed objectives, the research mapped the platforms (national and foreign), the authors, the books produced and the editorial features of the works. In the universe of national platforms, 43 professors from Brazilian universities were found. In relation of methodology, the technique used is the survey and the instrument of data collection adopted is the questionnaire. As a conclusion it is stated that academic authors from all areas are publishing on online platforms. The research demonstrated that most authors (75%) were very pleased with the publication of their work on the online platforms. And they are generally satisfied with the process itself. In the academic environment where publishing speed is paramount for the advancement of science, independent publishing on the platforms brings the resolution of this problem because it was pointed out as the greatest advantage by the respondents. Disadvantages were limited promotion and market.

Abstract: The publication of research results based on the textual document has been considered since the 17th century as the primary means of scientific communication. The arrival in Science of the paradigm based on data and the Open Science movement initiates the demand for publication of other research assets/assets of different nature. We contrast the need for new ways and approaches to the publication of assets to have an adequate description to ensure the findability, access, reuse and reproducibility. One of the avenues for this publication is the expanded scientific publication. Based on the tools provided by the quadripolar method, this research analyses the epistemological, theoretical and technical transformations of the scientific communication process. The main aim is to formalize a model for enhanced publications, which considers the semiotic aspects derived from the hybridization of languages in this type of publication and the relationships between the different entities that comprise the publication. The analysis starts from the conceptualization of enhanced publications as semiotic spaces of homogeneous and heterogeneous topography, due to their composition by objects of different nature. A mapping of different publication environments is performed to extract the entities that can compose an enhanced publication. These entities, together with the executable dimension that represents and establishes the creation process and logic between the entities, form the basis of... Riddell, Richard Rodford. "PhD by publication." Thesis, Bath Spa University, 2012. http://researchspace.bathspa.ac.uk/1578/.

Full text
Abstract:
This submission provides a commentary on thirteen of Richard Riddell's publications between 1999 and 2010. It explains the professional and policy contexts from the early 1990s onwards, when the author was a senior Local Authority officer, which gave rise to the thinking behind the first phase of his publications. These included the development of a bespoke school improvement process, deeply rooted in the context of the communities served by a school, and involving the development of an urban pedagogy and curricula. The centre piece of this phase was Schools for Our Cities (Riddell, 2003b). Attention then moved for phase 2 of the publications towards the social processes outside school that advantage middle class children within it. Research for this phase identified a managed model of social reproduction being operated by middle class families with children at independent schools, and an independent school/prestigious university nexus. Policy interventions of the 2000s might have begun to create analogous kinds of social processes for working class children, but they are no longer in place. The central piece for phase 2 was Aspiration, Identity and Self-Belief (Riddell, 2010).

Abstract:
DiVA, Academic Archive On-line, is a website which can provide the information from the most academic publications of Swedish Universities. The information includes the title, author, publication data, and so on. The aim of this project is to design a tool to visualize the co-authorship publication network and be able to transform the data into a more readable form. For parsing and visualizing data, the tool adopts the “InforVis Reference” model. Here a set of interaction and visualization technologies are adopted, so that it can create view base on user’s query with increasing the usability. In this thesis, we present a “use case” by applying our tool to visualize a part of articles published at Linnaeus University and to illustrate the capability and functions of the tool. The tool can also provide user a comfortable operating environment with a quick searching speed and high efficiency; it can be used anywhere, if internet is available.

This thesis documents the development of a web-application attacking the problem of visualization of co-authorship networks. The visualization encompasses several views. Each of them shows different aspects of the data which is loaded from Academic Archive Online (DiVa), a library system which holds all publications released in the Linnaeus University.  To detect relationships among authors, a new interactive layout for Node-Link Diagrams was developed which shows publications, authors and corresponding organizations (faculties, departments) in a radial manner. This Network-View is connected to another view showing the attributes (year, type) of the publications. In development, particular emphasis was placed on a rich support of user interaction in order to equip the user with a tool that allows graphical and explorative analysis of the underlying data.

Abstract:
This thesis was carried out at Saab AB, Support & Service, in Tannefors, Linköping, and at the Department of Computer Science at Linköping University. One item in the quality work for complex industrial products, such as aircrafts, is to shift from two-dimensional design data to three-dimensional. Three-dimensional models have been around for years. The disadvantage of these models is that they could not carry any extra information, in addition to the information necessary for them to be plotted. The technology has moved on and now it is possible to store technical information in the models and do simulations that didn't work before. As the technical information is contained in the models, you can also use this information to the various publications that are printed. The purpose of this study is to analyze how the technical information flow between models and users, and also to propose examples of how technical publications for the Gripen NG may be in the future when using model-based design documents. Once all information is in the model, it is not needed to have as much staff employed for editing pictures or writing text. This will involve a financial gain, and after some time, it will also provide an additional financial benefit, because the users have learned how the product works and will be more efficient in using it than the current documents.

Abstract:
This thesis is based on a study of reproducibility issues in image processing research. We designed, created and developed a scientific journal, Image Processing On Line (IPOL), in which articles are published with a complete implementation of the algorithms described, validated by the rapporteurs. A demonstration web service is attached, allowing testing of the algorithms with freely submitted data and an archive of previous experiments. We also propose copyrights and license policy, suitable for manuscripts and research software software, and guidelines for the evaluation of software. The IPOL scientific project seems very beneficial to research in image processing. With the detailed examination of the implementations and extensive testing via the demonstration web service, we publish articles of better quality. IPOL usage shows that this journal is useful beyond the community of its authors, who are generally satisfied with their experience and appreciate the benefits in terms of understanding of the algorithms, quality of the software produced, and exposure of their works and opportunities for collaboration. With clear definitions of objects and methods, and validated implementations, complex image processing chains become possible.

Scientific managers need to understand the impact of the research they support since they are required to evaluate researchers and their work for funding and promotional purposes. Yet, most of the online tools available to explore publication data, such as Google Scholar (GS), Microsoft Academic Search (MAS), and Scopus, present tabular views of publication data that fail to put scholars in a social, institutional, and geographic context. Moreover, these tools fail to provide aggregate views of the data for countries, organizations, and journals. Here, we introduce Opus, an interactive online platform that integrates, aggregates, and visualizes publication data from GS to present users with publication data at four different scales (e.g., scholars, countries, organizations, and journals). At each scale, Opus provides benchmarked visualizations that facilitate understanding the work of scholars in a social, generational, geographic, and institutional context. We conducted two user studies with a small group of potential users that show supporting evidence for the benefits of our approach. This design study contributes to the relatively unexplored but promising area of using information visualization to explore publication data.

Aims: 2005-2007 abstracts This study aimed to identify the: • number of clinical trials that were presented from 2005-2007 at the conferences of the: o American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), o European Orthodontic Society (EOS), o International Association for Dental Research (IADR), o European Organisation for Caries Research (ORCA) o Australian Society of Orthodontists Congress (ASO) • abstracts that went on to be published as a full paper in a peer reviewed journal. • time to publication for those abstracts that were subsequently published as a full paper in a peer reviewed journal. • following characteristics of the abstract and determine their influence on the rate of and time to publication: o Result significance: (Significant, Non-significant, or Unclear) o Mode of presentation (Oral or Poster) o Study design (RCT / CCT) o Sample Size: (Absolute number) o Funding disclosure: (Yes / No) o Continent of origin: (North America, South America, Europe, UK, Asia, Africa, Australasia). o Primary author: • Gender (Male / Female / Unclear) • Professional status: (Professor / Non-professor / Unclear) • Identify reasons why abstracts did not achieve publication. University Teachers Group (UTG) abstracts This study aimed to identify the: • number of abstracts presented at the University Teachers Group session, from 1999-2010, at the British Orthodontic Conference. • following characteristics of the abstract and determine their influence on rate of and time to publication: o Funding disclosure: (Yes / No) o Dental School of origin • abstracts that went on to be published as a full paper in a peer reviewed journal. Design: Retrospective, observational study. Subject and Setting: The sample frame included dental clinical trials presented at the conferences of the International Association of Dental Research (IADR), European Orthodontic Society (EOS), European Organisation for Caries Research (ORCA), The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) and The Australian Society of Orthodontists (ASO) from January 2005 to December 2007. The sample frame for the University Teachers Group (UTG) abstracts, included abstracts presented at the UTG session of the British Orthodontic Conference (BOC) 1999-2010. Sample size Spencer found a publication rate of 38% from abstracts of clinical trials presented at EOS, IADR, ORCA and a 50% increase would be give a publication rate of 57%. Using data from Spencer in Pocock’s formula, 210 abstracts would be required to give 80% power, at the 5% level, and enable me to detect a 50% rise in the proportion of clinical trial abstracts published. Method: Clinical trials presented at above conferences were identified from the associated journals or conference proceedings. Inter-examiner and intra-examiner reliability were assessed using a random 10% sample of abstracts. A MEDLINE search was undertaken to determine whether the abstract had been published in full. The date of publication was recorded. Authors of abstracts that did not reach publication were contacted to determine the reasons. Results: Seven thousand and sixty-nine abstracts presented from 2005-2007 were identified, including 215 clinical trials. 142 abstracts were identified from the UTG session from 1998 – 2008, and all were included. The publication rate for the 2005-2007 sample was 32.6% and the UTG sample 34.5%. There were no predictors of publication in either group studied. The median time to publication of the 2005 – 2007 group was 16.00 months, IQR (10, 26) and the mean time to publication for the UTG group was 18.3 months (95% CI 14.38, 22.19). For the unpublished 2005-2007 group, reasons given for failure to publish were lack of time (8.3%), language, culture, lack of teaching (1.4%), rejection (0.7%), motivation (0.7%), perceived editorial bias (0.7%) and length of review process (0.7%). For the UTG group, reasons given included lack of time (19.4%), lack of interest from SpR (9.7%) or in press (7.5%). Conclusions: No predictors of publication were found for either group studied. For the unpublished 2005-2007 group, main reasons given were lack of time (8.3%), language, culture and lack of teaching (1.4%). For the UTG group, reasons given included lack of time (19.4%), lack of interest from SpR (9.7%) or in press (7.5%). The qualitative results should be viewed with caution due to the low response rate (12.4% for the 2005 – 2007 sample, and 68.8% for UTG).

Abstract:
This study explored the publication pattern of Canadian computer scientists and compared the impact of conference papers and journal articles published by these researchers. It was found that conference proceedings are the preferred venue for scholarly communication, but the impact of conference papers is not comparable to that of journal articles. The potential reasons for the lower impact of conference papers are discussed, and possible approaches to improve the current scholarly communication system in computer science are proposed.

In this dissertation I conduct multiple studies that investigate a set of internal and external factors that influence research publication of Brazilian researchers in the field of Management. For this, four steps are used, consisting in four distinct and interconnected studies. Therefore, I explore the publication of articles, core competencies for top-level publication, rejection factors, differences between journal ranks. The studies contained in this dissertation have implications to three main audiences. First, scholars are able to better understand what influences their productivity. Second, doctoral programs are able to know what are the most important factors in the training of future researchers. Third, institutional agencies can rethink institutional demands for publication and their true implications.

Abstract:
I (veneno) x III (placebo): 0,10 (0,01 Background: Hymenoptera venom hypersensitivity is a significant public health problem. For patients who are allergic to components of the venom, reactions can be severe and sometimes fatal. The only effective treatment in the management of those patients is the specific venom immunotherapy. Objective: to assess the effects of the specific venom immunotherapy for Hymenoptera venom hypersensitivity through a systematic review. Methods: the standard search strategy of the Cochrane Skin Group was used for searches of electronic and other databases. These included MEDLINE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL, The Cochrane Library), EMBASE, LILACS, SciSEARCH and the references of relevant articles. All randomized controlled trials involving Hymenoptera venom immunotherapy versus immunotherapy with placebo or only follow-up of the patients were included. Two independent reviewers (ASW and LAMF) assessed the eligibility, and the methodological quality of each trial, and extracted the data. Post immunotherapy risk of systemic reactions after either challenge or accidental stings was calculated through the odds ratio and respective 95 percent confidence interval. Main results: 2,267 abstracts, identified through electronic sources, were assessed. Most articles were excluded for the following reasons: the studies did not satisfy all the inclusion criteria or they were not randomized controlled trials. Four studies were included on this review. The age of the participants varied between two and 65 years. Only one study compared ant venom immunotherapy with placebo (Brown et al.) and three studies (Hunt et al., Schubert et al. and Valentine et al.) compared bees and wasps immunotherapy with placebo or simply patient follow-up. In each study, the odds ratio to a systemic reaction was: Hunt et al.- Group I (venom) x III(placebo): 0,10 (0,01 < OR < 0,68) Schubert et al.: 0,35 (0,05 < OR < 2,56); Valentine et al.: 0,16 (0,02 < OR < 1,21) and Brown et al.: 0,04 (0,01 < OR < 0,28). After the heterogeneity test (p = 0,623), only two studies (Schuberth 1983 and Valentine 1990) were homogeneous enough as to be included in a meta-analysis. The summary odds ratio was 0.29 (IC 95%: 0.10 - 0.87). However, when the severity of the reaction occurring after the sting challenge or accidental sting was taken into account, the benefits were not so relevant because the reactions were, for the most, milder than the original one. Conclusions: The specific-venom immunotherapy must be recommended for adults with systemic reactions and for children with moderate to severe reactions, but there is no need to prescribe it for children who present only skin reactions after insects sting, particularly if the exposure is sporadic.

The purpose of this study was to identify and analyze publication trends of behavior analysts in the last 22 years of publication of Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, between 1993 and 2015. This study update Northup, Vollmer and Serrett (1993). A sample of 314 articles were selected from a population of 1.704 articles published between 1993 and 2015. This sample was revised and categorized, and publication trends analyzed based on variables and categories defined by Northup et al. (1993). The analyze variable were: (1) type of article, (2) participants, (3) setting, (4) behavioral change agents, (5) target behavior, (6) use of behavioral procedures and (7) generalization and follow-up measures. The results indicated that the JABA remains one of research papers communication newspaper with few studies for review, discussion and methodological studies. The typical behavioral change agent identified in the analyzed research is the own experimenter. Most surveys are interventions with people with developmental disabilities. Positive reinforcement, verbal instruction and punishment are the most common procedures in the analyzed articles and research published still lack data on follow-up and generalization measures. Implications for future research on interventions by applied behavior analysts discussed based on the founded results

Abstract:

Abstract:
Objectives: To review, apply and compare existing publication bias methodology. To extend the selection model methods that adjust combined estimates and to develop models to adjust for publication bias and heterogeneity simultaneously. ' Methods: Methodologies that test for the existence of publication bias, estimate the number of missing studies, and adjust combined estimates for publication bias are reviewed. Parametric weighted distribution methodology is developed further. The existing family of distributions is extended to include a logistic function. Weight functions previously limited to modelling selection based on two-tailed p-values have been restructured for one-tailed p-values. The selection mechanism model has been developed to incorporate both p-values and precision. The model for effect size has been developed to incorporate linear predictors, so heterogeneity and publication bias can be modelled simultaneously. Data: Two systematic reviews taken from the Cochrane Library and simulation studies. Results: Methods that test for the existence of publication bias or estimate the number of missing studies are limited by the strength of their assumptions and low power. Weighted distributions offer the only way to directly assess the impact of publication bias. In data sets in which there is heterogeneity or the true treatment effect is null, modelling the selection mechanism on p-values only can lead to over-adjusted estimates and considerable variability between estimates with wide confidence intervals. Extending the selection model to include precision reduces this. It is then possible to include other covariates such as study quality or type. The effect-size model can be extended in a similar way to include linear predictors. Combination of these two models allows simultaneous consideration of the influence of publication bias and heterogeneity. Conclusions: Weighted distributions offer a flexible approach to modelling publication bias. Inclusion of precision in the selection model reduces sensitivity of the model to the shape of the selection model improving consistency of results. No selection model should be used on its own but in conjunction with others to allow a sensitivity approach

Abstract:
Introduction. Conclusion.
Introduction. Evidence of selective outcome reporting in medical literature is well-known. In 2005, a policy requiring investigators to deposit information in a registry before study onset was initiated. This initiative ambitioned to reduce biases. This study aims to assess: 1)The frequency of trial registration since these recommandations 2)The adequacy between published articles and registers 3)The use of registered information by reviewers. Results: 1)In 40 of the 144 articles, the studies had been registered (27. 8%). Moreover, 24 reports (23%) contained misleading conclusions, of the 105 articles with a clear primary outcome (PO). Négative trial results were associated with misleading abstract conclusions. In the second study, of the 323 included trials, 147 (45. 5%) were adequately registered (i. E. , registered before the end of the trial, with the PO clearly specified). 2)Among the 147 articles with trials adequately registered, 46 (31%) showed some evidence of outcome reporting bias, of which, when the PO description was available, 82. 6% (19/23) had PO results that were statistically significant. 3)Of the 1,136 responses (37. 5%), 676 (59. 5%) had reviewed an article in the past 2 years. Among these, 232 (34. 3%) looked at a trial registry. If one or more items differed between the registry record and the manuscript, 206 reviewers mentioned the discrepancy in their review comments, 46 advised editors not to accept the manuscript. Conclusion. There is an increase in trial registration, and also discrepancies between registered and published information. However, the situation is encouraging because a third of reviewers already use registers in the peer-review process

Abstract:
The peer-review system is undoubtedly the gold standard of scientific publication. Peer review serves a two-fold purpose; to screen out of publication articles containing incorrect or irrelevant science and to improve the quality of the ones deemed suitable for publication. Moreover, the role of the scientific journals and editors is to ensure that valid scientific knowledge is disseminated to the appropriate target group of scientists and to the public. However, the peer review system has recently been criticized, in that it is unsustainable, inefficient and slows down publication. In this PhD thesis, I used complex-systems modeling to study the macroscopic behavior of the scientific publication and peer-review systems. In my first project, I modeled empirical data from various sources, such as Pubmed and Publons, to assess the sustainability of the system. I showed that the potential supply has been exceeding the demand for peer review by 15% to 249% and thus, the system is sustainable in terms of volume. However, 20% of researchers have been performing 69% to 94% of the annual reviews, which emphasizes a significant imbalance in terms of effort by the scientific community. The results provided evidence contrary to the widely-adopted, but untested belief, that the demand for peer review over-exceeds the supply, and they indicated that the majority of researchers do not contribute to the process. In my second project, I developed a large-scale agent-based model, which mimicked the behavior of the conventional peer-review system. This model was calibrated with empirical data from the biomedical domain. Using this model as a base for my third project, I developed and assessed the performance of five alternative peer-review systems by measuring peer-review efficiency, reviewer effort and scientific dissemination as compared to the conventional system. In my simulations, two alternative systems, in which scientists shared past reviews of their rejected manuscripts with the editors of the next journal to which they submitted, performed equally or sometimes better in terms of peer-review efficiency. They also each reduced the overall reviewer effort by ~63%. In terms of scientific dissemination, they decreased the median time from first submission until publication by ~47% and diffused on average 10% to 36% more scientific information (i.e., manuscript intrinsic quality x journal impact factor) than the conventional system. Finally, my agent-based model may be an approach to simulate alternative peer-review systems (or interventions), find those that are the most promising and aid decisions about which systems may be introduced into real-world trials

Abstract:
Legal deposit is an obligation to deposit publications with specified depositories. The purpose of legal deposit is to preserve and provide long-term access to the national intellectual heritage. Extending legal deposit to digital publications presents many challenges for the framing of legislation, selection and acquisition of material, preservation and provision of access. The aim of this research was to: explore the potential issues related to the extension of UK legal deposit to digital publications and identify the implications for existing legal deposit arrangements. The research was based on Soft Systems Methodology. Data was gathered through two rounds of interviews with stakeholder groups, including legal deposit libraries, publishers, government and technical experts. Preservation is accepted as the main purpose of legal deposit, but there is some tension and lack of trust between publishers and legal deposit libraries on access to legal deposit collections. The new UK legal deposit law is enabling only; implementation will require further regulations that will be subject to detailed consultation and negotiation. While there has been a voluntary scheme in place for some time in the UK, the research found a lack of readiness amongst the UK legal deposit libraries. They still had to develop cooperative arrangements between themselves and publishers; policies, procedures, especially for online publications; and did not have all the necessary technical infrastructure in place. The deposit of digital publications is an extra role for legal deposit libraries and it is not clear that they will receive extra funding, as is the case in some other countries. There is currently no full-scale fully functional digital legal deposit system in the world. However, there are lessons to be learned from other legal deposit libraries and research and development work is providing partial solutions. The key issues are the need for communication and collaboration between UK legal deposit libraries and cooperation and trust between legal deposit libraries and publishers. Developments since the research was carried out demonstrate some progress in this. Without these, digital legal deposit cannot be successfully implemented in the UK. There is also a need to look at what the users require in terms to material collected and how it is preserved.

The paper evaluated the use of slogans and computational 3-D iconography for educational purposes. Three textual forms were applied (long topics; slogans; combination of the two previous forms), in order to evaluate the learning of third-year medical students about Sexually Transmitted Diseases. Ten multiple-choice questions were applied immediately after reading and 60 days after the first application. There was an increase in memorization in students who used the text with combination of the didactic material forms. Before, we demonstrated that the iconographies can condense high quantities of information and transmit them in a short time, utilizing the theme Hair Cycle for analysis. Slogans were inserted in the iconographies, presenting a new form of rapid transmission of information. These tools, when utilized in educational material, may provide benefits to the learning.

Behavior Analysis always had great emphasis in education research, and the Journal of Behavioral Education set out to be a place for publications in this area. Periodically it is useful to investigate characteristics of publication in order to point out strengths and weaknesses and suggests changes when necessary. Lee et al. (2007) investigated publication trends from the beginning of the journal to 2005, and now it important to look back again. Publications from 2006 to 2015, volumes 15 to 24 were investigated using largely the same categories and variables used by Lee et al. (2007), with some minor changes and expansions, with the goal of determining characteristics regarding participants, research design and interventions as well as generalization, maintenance and procedural integrity data. Bibliographic data collected are: (a) Year, (b) Issue, (c) Author, (d) University, (e) Country, (f) Keywords, (g) Editor. Article characteristics data collected are: (a) Type of Article, (b) Quantity of studies, (c) Setting, (d) Intervention format, (e) Intervenor, (f) Dependent variable, (g) Generalization data, (h) Maintenance data, (i) Integrity data (j) Social validity data, (k) Design. Results shows that trends present in Lee et al. (2007) are mostly maintained, multiple-baseline design being the main choice, most of the studies use schools as setting, but half of them are done outside of the classroom. Interventions are applied mainly by the experimenter and using a one-on-one format. There was little but significant improvement in generalization, maintenance and procedural integrity data. Suggestions for improvement of the area follows

This research in artistic processes has three series of drawings, developed as part of my production during the last two years of the Master s degree as object of study. The research is based on the discursive terrain of artist s writing and presents itself as a space-work-research: primarily expositive space in printed form. For the construction of the concept of Drawing Attractors, I approach its definition in physics, which is the set of dynamic behaviors and phenomena in continuous and chaotic fluctuation that occur within a system. I signal this concept by the drawing of a rings balance as seen in the video image Limbo (by Cao Guimarães) which to rotate, oscillate in a chaotic and poetic fluctuation in the density of the drawing. Each of the three chapters addresses one of the series in their different densities: rarefied drawings occupy the Spaces of contention, liquid drawings flow by the Abysses and seven seas and the amorphous soundness of Drawing-words exist only in the opacity of this research. Some references are important in poetic dialogues, especially with the artists: Diego Rayck, Raquel Stolf, Mira Schendel, José Leonilson, Francis Alÿs, Mel Bochner, Robert Smithson and Sol Lewitt. The specific research on the writings of artists organized by Aline Dias, Gloria Ferreira and Cecilia Cotrim, as well as the research into printed exhibition spaces by Regina Melim. Some writers were fundamental to this work through literary works: Moby Dick by Herman Melville, Lezioni americane: Sei proposte per il prossimo millennio by Italo Calvino, Cujo by Nuno Ramos and Espèces d espaces by Georges Perec. Some theoretical points are developed from the writings of the curators Emma Dexter, Briony Fer and Luis Pérez-Oramas

Abstract:
Tuberculosis (TB) has been as a world emergency by World Health Organization in 1993. Nowadays, the tools available for TB control are early diagnosis and efficient treatment. However, TB treatment default is a concerning problem in the world and may vary between 3% and 80%, So, the identification of factors that may predict TB treatment default may help to develop better strategies to control TB. The objective of this work is, through a meta-analysis, to pool a summary estimate of associations of each factor (a) related to the health services, (b) to clinical condition and therapy and (c) to the individuals and TB treatment default. The remote electronic search strategy to find relevant publications was specifically developed for the different databases considered important, wich are: LILACS and MedLine (Pubmed). Searches for cross reference and search at COCHRANE systematic reviews database were also made. Investigations were included if they were observations or experimental that studied risk factors or predictive factors of the outcomes of interest (TB treatment default) through comparing two or more groups and the data could be extracted. Two independent reviewers classified and extracted the data and the discordances were solved in later meetings. More than 190 full texts were apt to be combines. From these texts, 40 exposures were extracted and combined. From these, 19 were shown in this investigation. 13 of 19 shown exposures demonstrated associations and could be considered as predictors ( male gender, alcoholism, HIV infection/AIDS, illicit drug use, foreign nationality, illiteracy, retreatment, positive sputum smear, previous default, short course therapy, easy access to health unit and adherence training extrapulmonary TB) and six did not show associations (unemployment , adverse effects, drug resistance, need for hospitalization, delay in start treatment, long wait for attendance). However these associations must considered very in a conservative way due to high level heterogeneity found in all exposures. Only five exposures have partially explanation and one have total explanation to the heterogeneity. Publication bias was detected in only two of the 19 exposures studied.

Abstract:
Meta-analysis is the statistical part of a systematic review. Many researchers have used selection functions to model publication bias in a meta-analysis. The main problem with this approach is that it is impossible to verify that the selection function truly represents the selection process, and so the use of selection functions can only be seen as part of a sensitivity analysis. In this thesis we present new methods that involve selection functions that aim to make as few strong assumptions about selection as possible, including the use of a non-parametric permutation test, and the use of a step selection function. We also investigate the use of parametric selection functions and suggest how researchers could use these as part of a sensitivity analysis, by looking at a range of plausible values for the overall selection probability. As part of this sensitivity analysis, we assess the effectiveness of the Bounds method as presented by Henmi et al. Throughout the thesis we illustrate all methods with numerical examples, including a meta-analysis investigating the effects of environmental tobacco smoke on the risk of lung cancer in non-smokers.

McNutt, Genevieve Theodora. "Joseph Ritson and the publication of early English literature." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/31497.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the work of antiquary and scholar Joseph Ritson (1752-1803) in publishing significant and influential collections of early English and Scottish literature, including the first collection of medieval romance, by going beyond the biographical approaches to Ritson's work typical of nineteenth- and twentieth-century accounts, incorporating an analysis of Ritson's contributions to specific fields into a study of the context which made his work possible. It makes use of the 'Register of Manuscripts Sent to the Reading Room of the British Museum' to shed new light on Ritson's use of the manuscript collections of the British Museum. The thesis argues that Ritson's early polemic attacks on Thomas Warton, Thomas Percy, and the editors of Shakespeare allowed Ritson to establish his own claims to expertise and authority, built upon the research he had already undertaken in the British Museum and other public and private collections. Through his publications, Ritson experimented with different strategies for organizing, systematizing, interpreting and presenting his research, constructing very different collections for different kinds of texts, and different kinds of readers. A comparison of Ritson's three major collections of songs - A Select Collection of English Songs (1783), Ancient Songs (1790), and Scotish Songs (1794) - demonstrates some of the consequences of his decisions, particularly the distinction made between English and Scottish material. Although Ritson's Robin Hood (1795) is the most frequently reprinted of his collections, and one of the best studied, approaching this work within the immediate context of Ritson's research and other publications, rather than its later reception, offers some explanation for its more idiosyncratic features. Finally, Ritson's Ancient Engleish Metrical Romance's (1802) provides a striking example of Ritson's participation in collaborative networks and the difficulty of finding an audience and a market for editions of early English literature at the beginning of the nineteenth century.

Ireland, Philippa. "Material factors affecting the publication of black British fiction." Thesis, Open University, 2010. http://oro.open.ac.uk/54220/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines some of the material factors affecting the publication of black British fiction during the last three decades of the twentieth century. It argues that a study of the publishing history of black British fiction in this period must take into account wider political and cultural issues, as well as the internal structure and mechanics of book publishing. It therefore explores how shifting cultural, political and commercial contexts influenced the selection, marketing, supply and reception of a number of black British texts. The importance of the interaction between such 'external' factors and the 'internal' modus operandi of book production and distribution is highlighted throughout. A distinctive aspect of this thesis is its use of archives and personal testimonies provided by significant figures in publishing as key sources of information. The Introduction sets out the scope of the thesis, addressing, in particular, the label 'black British' and how it is to be used within the study. It also situates the research firmly within the discipline of Book History, considering some of the most influential models that have been proposed to help us understand the circulation of books in society. Part One establishes the historical context. Beginning with the early publication of black writers from the Caribbean in Britain in the 1950s and 1960s, it moves on to consider the ways in which black writers and writing were affected by changing political and cultural agendas throughout this period. It investigates the effect of multicultural policies and practice upon education and librarianship, as well as the response of local government and the Arts Council strategy to the changing make-up of British society, arguing that the impact of these wider developments had a significant influence upon the publication of black British fiction. Part Two focuses on publishers, publishing and prizes. It opens by offering a critical analysis of the activities and legacy of two pioneering black British publishers, both established in Britain in the late 1960s: New Beacon Books and Bogle L'Ouverture. The contrasting approach of the niche publisher X Press provides an example of the variety of ways in which autonomous black British presses evolved over the course of three decades. Comparisons are made with the role played by feminist publishers in Britain in the promotion of fiction by marginal groups, and it is argued that the market success of African American women's writing was an important influence on decisions by feminist publishers to publish black British women writers in the UK. This is followed by a detailed investigation of the literary prize phenomenon and its influence upon the publication of black British fiction. The final chapter of the thesis proffers a critical account of the success of some black British novelists in the light of this phenomenon. It argues that literary prizes with very specific entry criteria were to have a marked influence upon the literary careers of a handful of black British writers, and that this in turn had the effect of raising the profile of black British fiction more generally, thus demonstrating its commercial viability. In conclusion, it is argued that the period from the early 1980s to the 2000s represented a very specific and important moment in the publishing history of black British fiction. There still remains a role in the current market for a number of different publishers of black British fiction. This now needs to be viewed, however, within a context where the relevance and contemporary significance of the label 'black British' is constantly being reassessed.

Abstract:

Every scientific research begins with a literature review that includes an extensive bibliographic search. Such searches are known to be difficult and time-consuming because of the vast amount of topical material existing in today's ever-changing technology base. Keeping up-to-date with related literature and being aware of the most recent publications require extensive time and effort. The need for a WWW-based software tool for collecting and providing access to this scientific body of knowledge is undeniable. The study explained herein deals with this problem by developing an efficient, advanced, easy-to-use tool, WebBiblio, that provides a globally accessible WWW environment enabling the collection and dissemination of searchable bibliographies comprised of abstracts and keywords. This thesis describes the design, structure and features of WebBiblio, and explains the ideas and approaches used in its development. The developed system is not a prototype, but a production system that exploits the capabilities of the WWW. Currently, it is used to publish three VV&T bibliographies at the WWW site: http://manta.cs.vt.edu/biblio. With its rich set of features and ergonomically engineered interface, WebBiblio brings a comprehensive solution to solving the problem of globally collecting and providing access to a diverse set of bibliographies.
