Abstract:
Abstract The adage “publish or perish” is food for thought for academics, although many nontenured faculty have been left with a bitter aftertaste. A less pithy but more gently stated message is that academics are held accountable for the support and status they are given by society for scholarly effort. The product that we are privileged to produce is information. In our case, we deal in the creation, discovery, verification, and distribution of information applicable to horticulture and, thus, information for the benefit of humankind. Failure to communicate our results will lead to our professional demise and the demise of our profession.

Abstract:
In Reply.— Dr Sahler's letter to Pediatrics summarizes the dilemma that academic medicine and editors of journals face. It is truly a "chicken and egg" problem, but there is little hope for resolving it in the near future. Academic faculties are very conservative when it comes to changing the "rules" for anything, as evidenced by the slowness with which curricular reform is occurring in this country. Although many have commented on the need to modernize the policies and procedures for the award of tenure, and for academic promotion, the focus for change remains in our faculties and in their promotion and tenure committees, at both the departmental and school or University levels.

Abstract:
To the Editor.— In a recent issue of Pediatrics,1 the editors of several pediatric journals express disgruntlement with the practices of submitting articles reporting the same data to more than one journal, or "self-plagiarism," and of dividing studies into numerous short reports or "least publishable units." To combat these practices, they infarmally" inform one another about suspected duplication. All well and good, I suppose, and occasionally authors probably have had their hands slapped. But, the crux of the matter, really, is contained in paragraph 1, sentence 5: "We suspect that these practices are based on the desire to expand one's list of publications so as to enhance one's reputation and the chances of achieving promotion and academic tenure."
