Abstract:
At the Shaanxi Observatory, regular observations with the prototype of the photoelectric astrolabe PAI have been carried out since 1973. Three photoelectric astrolabes of type Mark II (PAII) were mounted at the Shanghai, Beijing and Yunnan Observatories in 1974, 1976 and 1978, respectively. Details of the instruments and the results of the observation were published previously. (Photoelectric Astrolabe Developing Group 1973 and 1975, Second Group, First Divsion Shaanxi Observatory 1974, Astrolabe Data Analysis Group, First Division, Shaanxi Observatory 1975, Wang, L-j 1979, Astrolabe Group, First Division, Shanghai Observatory 1976, Wang, L-z and Luo 1979, Lu and Luo 1979). Time and latitude determinations by these sets of photoelectric astrolabes form a part in the international cooperation of BIH, IPMS as well as in the short campaign of project MERIT.

Abstract:
In the past fifteen years, the MESA Bulletin has published numerous reports about research facilities in various Middle East countries, including several on Arab states (Zartman 1970; Williams 1970; Brown, Rollman, and Waterbury 1970; Coury 1971; Raccagni and Simmons 1972; Hudson 1972; Bechtold 1973, Zghal and Karoui 1973; Miller 1973; Hale and Hale 1975; Rassam 1976; Mandaville 1979; Anderson 1980; Reinhart 1980; Clancy-Smith 1984; Crystal 1984). None of these, however, has focused on doing survey research in the region. In part, this seemed to indicate a lack of interest in, and/or feasibility for, carrying out this type of research. In fact, when in 1973 MESA members were asked to share with their colleagues the data from surveys they had carried out, only twenty-one individuals responded, and in only nine cases were there survey data gathered in Arab states (“A Preliminary Listing …” 1974). Since then, the situation has improved somewhat. Thus, Palmer et al. (1982) have compiled an analytical index detailing more than 350 studies using survey research techniques in different Arab countries. Also in 1983, an international conference on the evaluation and application of survey research in the Arab world was held at the Rockefeller Foundation’s Study and Conference Center in Bellagio, Italy. The Ford Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation sponsored the conference, which was attended by twenty-four individuals from the United States and seven Arab countries. A book based on the papers and proceedings of the conference will be published soon, edited by Tessler et al. (forthcoming).

Abstract:
The second survey of legal education was published in July 1975 and was based largely on information gathered during the academic session 1973/74. At that time, the decision was taken to present the material in tabular form in order that the report could provide a framework for the future publication, at suitable intervals, of supplements containing appropriate up-dated tables. In pursuance of this objective, supplements were published in 1978 and 1981 with statistics drawn largely from sessions 1976/77 and 1980/81 respectively.Developments since 1981 now justify the undertaking of a more thorough review with the object of producing a third survey report.

Carter, Joseph G., and George R. Clark. "Classification and Phylogenetic Significance of Molluscan Shell Microstructure." Notes for a Short Course: Studies in Geology 13 (1985): 50–71. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s0271164800001093.

Full text
Abstract:
Like most classifications of molluscan shell microstructure published during the past 25 years (e.g., MacClintock, 1967; Kobayashi, 1964, 1971; Taylor, Kennedy and Hall, 1969, 1973; Grégoire, 1972a), the present one is based largely on Bøggild's (1930) monographic work, redefined from a modern perspective of combined light and scanning electron microscopy. However, this is the first attempt to integrate shell microstructure terminology for mollusks with that employed by students of bryozoan and brachiopod shell microstructure (e.g., Williams, 1968a,b, 1970, 1973; Williams and Wright, 1970; Armstrong 1968, 1969; Sandberg, 1971, 1977; Brunton, 1972; MacKinnon, 1974, 1977; MacKinnon and Williams, 1974; Iwata, 1981, 1982). An integration of nomenclatorial schemes is desirable for purposes of interphylum comparison, and is presently needed because there is considerable overlap and inconsistency in the application of microstructural terminology even within single molluscan classes. The present synthesis of shell microstructure nomenclature is possible primarily because of the extensive data base of invertebrate shell mineralogy, microstructure and especially ultrastructure published in more than 300 references in the past 15 years. To these data, the authors have contributed original information of shell mineralogy and microstructure for scores of Recent and fossil mollusks, brachiopods and bryozoans, with a clear emphasis on bivalved mollusks. Many inadequately described microstructure terms have been reanalyzed during the course of this study, either by examining species cited in the literature, or by using closely related species. Perhaps because they are better studied, but probably for other reasons as well, the diversity of molluscan shell microstructures is considerably greater than that of brachiopods and bryozoans combined (Carter, 1979). Consequently, most of the present nomenclature is based on mollusks, and only three of the major microstructural arrangements described in this guide (crossed bladed, semi-nacreous and semi-foliated) were known first in brachiopods or bryozoans and later recognized in molluscs.

Abstract:
The species-rich and widespread genusTaraxacumF. H. Wiggers, 1780 (Asteraceae subfamily Cichorioideae) is one of the most taxonomically complex plant genera in the world, mainly due to its combination of different sexual and asexual reproduction strategies. Polyploidy is usually confined to apomictic microspecies, varying from 3x to 6x (rarely 10x). In this study, we focused on Taraxacum sect.Taraxacum(= T.sect.Ruderalia;T.officinalegroup), i.e., the largest group within the genus. We counted chromosome numbers and measured the DNA content for species sampled in Central Europe, mainly in Czechia. Abstract:
Although the discovering of a complete Palestinian Targum in the Codex Vatican Neofiti 1 (N) erroneously marked in the spine as ‘ Targum Onkelos ’ was not of archaeological but merely archival nature, it was an event of major importance in Aramaic studies. Its announcement by the discoverer, Alejandro Diez Macho, a former student of P. E. Kahle, in Estudios Biblicos, 16, 1956, 446 ff., and Sefarad, 17, 1957, 119 ff., and especially the impressive voluminous publication by the same scholar, Neophyti 1 Targum Palestinense MS de la Biblioteca Vaticana (Madrid-Barcelona, I, Genesis, 1968; II, Exodo, 1970; III, Levitico 1971; IV, Numeros, 1974; v, Deuteronomio, 1978), provided with detailed scholarly introductions to each volume as well as translations of the edited text into Spanish (by the editor), French (by R. Le Déaut) and English (by M. McNamara and M. Maher), aroused great and justified enthusiasm among scholars. Meanwhile, a facsimile edition in 140 copies was published by Makor in Jerusalem (1970), which helped to clear up certain problems in Macho's edition (esp. the omission of the Hebrew lemmata at the beginning of each verse and errors obliterated by the copyists) deplored by David M. Golomb in his recently published thesis, A grammar of Targum Neofiti (p. 1 f.).

Abstract:
FROM THE PRESS HISTORY OF THE LARGEST INDUSTRIAL PLANTS IN WROCŁAW AND THE SURROUNDING AREA 1946–1990The author presents a historical overview of company newspapers published in Wrocław and two nearby towns — Brzeg Dolny and Jelcz-Laskowice — where large industrial plants employing thousands of people living in the Lower Silesian capital were located. The article consists of two parts. In the first the author quotes the definition of company press, discusses its function and on the basis of figures from Ruch Wydawniczy w Liczbach [Polish Publishing in Figures] from 1968–1992 presents the publication frequency and geography of such publications with regard to the whole country. Part two is devoted to company newspapers published in the region referred to in the title. Drawing on an analysis of archive material kept in the State Archives in Wrocław, especially documents produced by the Regional Committee of the Polish United Workers’ Party in 1971–1978, the author examines the party nature of these publications and the requirements imposed on their editorial teams. She analyses the following publications in chronological order: Pafawag 1946–1990, Ku Nowemu 1954–1990, Żeglarz Odrzański 1954–1981, Życie Załogi 1956–1981, Nasze Problemy 1969–1990, Intermoda 1972–1981, Elwro 1973–1981, Polar 1976–1981, as well as one from Brzeg Dolny Głos Rokity, 1954–1981 and Jelcz-Laskowice Głos Jelcza 1962–2001. She points to formal features like format, size and circulation; editorial features, especially changes in the graphic layout of the headpiece; lists members of the editorial teams and briefly describes the profile of each newspaper in question.

Abstract:
Julius Thomsen first published his account of myotonia (an unusual muscle stiffness disorder) in himself and his family in 1876. By November 1971, Peter Becker was already famous for his eponymous Becker muscular dystrophy when he came to the Second International Congress on Muscle Diseases, in Perth. There, he presented an extensive study of myotonia, recognising a recessively inherited disease (now known as Becker’s recessive generalised myotonia), distinct from Thomsen’s myotonia congenita and clearly distinguishable from Steinert’s myotonic dystrophy, both dominantly inherited. Peter Becker, Shirley Bryant, Reinhardt Rüdel and Allan Bretag all met in Perth, with mutual interests in myotonia. They subsequently maintained contact while Bretag undertook research in Germany in 1972–1973 and 1977. Later, in 1978, Bretag worked with Bryant’s myotonic goats in Cincinnati. His research on Thomsen’s and Becker’s myotonias has since progressed to confirmation of Bryant’s chloride hypothesis through a molecular genetic study of the muscle chloride channel, CLC -1. This has culminated in several collaborative papers with German colleagues and, finally, in a mechanistic description of how the CLC -1 channel is gated.

Abstract:
Drawing on thousands of pages of documents from the closed Cuban archives, from U.S. archives, and from the former East German archives, as well as published materials, this article explores the role that Cuba played in Africa after its dramatic dispatch of 36,000 soldiers to Angola in late 1975 and the first few months of 1976. The article focuses on the two most important aspects of Cuba's policy in Africa after 1976: its intervention in Ethiopia in 1977–1978 and its continuing presence in Angola, a presence that continued until 1991. The article analyzes Cuba's motivations, the extent to which Fidel Castro's policy was a function of Soviet demands, and the effect of Cuba's policy in Africa on relations with the United States. The concluding section offers an assessment of the costs and benefits of Cuba's policy in Africa.

Published between 1974 and 1987, this sequence of books was notably composed of intellectuals works from Brazil and abroad, specially from United States, linked to Political Science, History, Sociology, Economy and Anthropology areas. With the participation of eighty-eight authors and the presence of almost a hundred titles in its catalogue, the analysis of the constitution of this set make possible the visualization of the way that certain academic groups, mainly, of a group from São Paulo city, joined with the editor Fernando Gasparian to spread their interpretations about the Brazilian present and past. Developing this perspective, we identify themes and theoretical preferences, but also institutional and personal links that contributed to the consolidation of a new vocabulary concerning Brazil, mostly influenced by a common political purpose: the end of the order introduced in 1964.

Full text
Abstract:
This study primarily examines the cultural and commercial practices of editors and publishers who commission and acquire content in independent Australian publishing houses. My research spans a 30-year transitional period in book publishing from 1970 to 2000 - a period marked by rapid and unstable shifts in publishing culture, reflecting wider social, political, economic and technological change. In a global market economy, more than ever before, the acquisition of local content is critical in fostering original ideas and works by Australian authors. A series of semi-structured interviews with editors and publishers provides a direct source of personal experience and professional industry-based knowledge. These narratives address and engage with individual and collective values, beliefs, assumptions and attitudes which reflect particular personalities and publishing styles. They also contribute to an understanding of the editors' and publishers' commissioning role, where knowledge and content are taken up and developed and publishing decisions are made. An analysis of editors' and publishers' responses further explores the diversity of commissioning and acquisitions environments in which they live and work. Publishing houses are profiled and works of fiction and non-fiction are identified and discussed in an attempt to unpack how and why they were commissioned and developed for publication, and to what social and cultural effect. The dynamics of organisational structure and publishing culture are explored by analysing general and specific publishing models. Editors and publishers discuss how publishing companies operate and offer insights into, and perceptions of, organisational structure and publishing culture and, importantly, how both impact on commissioning practice. Issues of identity, representation and institutionalisation are identified as they relate to developments and trends within publishing and public culture, as a whole, and the ways in which they intersect. This nexus of culture and power is explored through the cultural production of Australian content, and in particular, in Chapters Five and Six, with the impact of second-wave feminism on Australian publishing culture and cross-currents in the production and publication of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander works.

Abstract:
AbstractSupramolecular chemistry (SMC), at the interface between chemistry, physics and biology, is a research domain which has grown considerably in the last 40 years. Jean-Marie Lehn was the first to lay its foundations and formalise its concepts, in a seminal article published in 1978. This work earned him the 1987 Nobel Prize for Chemistry, which he shared with Charles J. Pedersen (DuPont) and Donald J. Cram (UCLA). The development of SMC has led to the creation of a dedicated institute and a new building on the university campus. In this chapter, the emergence of supramolecular chemistry as a paradigm and research speciality at the University of Strasbourg (France) is reconstructed with a focus on Lehn’s central role in this process, proposing a three-period chronology based on Mullins’ sequential model (1972). It is furthermore argued that the creation of a physical space, with particular architecture and functions, has also played a key role in consolidating what is now called the “Strasbourg’s chemistry”. The (multi)disciplinary character of SMC is discussed in reference to the concept of “new disciplinarity” put forward by Marcovich and Shinn (Soc Sci Inf 50(3–4):582–6062011, Toward a new dimension: exploring the nanoscale. Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2014).

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter investigates a crucial turning point in the writing of Syrian dramatist Saadallah Wannous (1941–1997) in the late 1970s. This internationally acclaimed author belonged to a generation of Arab intellectuals and artists whose political and artistic identities were strongly shaped by the question of Palestine. After the Camp David Accords of 1978 and the resulting Egypt-Israel peace treaty, signed in 1979, Wannous attempted suicide and stopped writing plays for more than ten years. This chapter shows how the plays he published after this self-imposed silence moved away from a didactic, political theater and towards psychological studies focusing on individuals as well as minority and gender issues. This chapter asks whether the significant aesthetic and conceptual turn in Wannous’s work from the early 1990s onwards might go beyond the concerns of a specific individual artist. To what extent does it mark a generational shift in regard to the meaning and connotations of political art?

Abstract:
This review of L. A. Sussman’s The Elder Seneca (1978) appeared in the following year. The book looks ‘at the old man himself, his life, the artistic design of his collection of Controversiae and Suasoriae, his literary criticism, and his lost Histories. It is not a faultless book, but it is scrupulous in giving the evidence from which it argues, and up to the minute with the bibliography; nothing previously published covers this ground so fully and so conveniently.’ The reviewer, however, does fault Sussman for his neglect of the Greek background, and adds details of some disagreements with particular judgements. He ends by suggesting that Sussman may be thought to overvalue his author, ‘the pleasant old gentleman about whom Sussman has given us this pleasant book’.

Full text
Abstract:
The Heat Exchange Institute (HEI) Standards for Steam Surface Condensers are used to design and predict the performance of condensers for power plant applications. Since their inception, the Standards have undergone numerous changes to incorporate technological advances and revisions to various factors based on testing and operating experiences. Admiralty and copper-nickel (CuNi) tubes were very popular until the 1970’s. Subsequently, increasing concerns with the use of copper-based alloys in nuclear power plants as well as other factors led to specification and use of stainless steel (SS) and titanium. The first condenser designed with titanium tubes was put into service in 1977. In 1978, the HEI published the seventh edition of the HEI Standards for Steam Surface Condensers. The eighth edition was issued in 1984 followed by Addendum 1 in 1989. The ninth edition was issued in 1995 and Addendum 1 to the ninth edition was published in 2002. Notable differences between the ninth and seventh editions include: higher circulating water inlet temperature correction factors below 70.0 °F; for Admiralty, higher tube material and gauge correction factors for tube wall gauge below 16 BWG and lower values above 20 BWG; for 90/10 CuNi and 304 SS, higher tube material and gauge correction factors for tube wall gauge between 12 BWG and 24 BWG; and, for titanium, higher tube material and gauge correction factors for tube wall gauge above 18 BWG. Depending upon the tube diameter, material, wall gauge and the correction factors used for a specific condenser application and its operating range, there could be substantial deviations in predicted condenser performance and associated impact on output. Using a case study, this paper examines the use of the correction factors from the seventh and ninth editions in power plant condenser performance predictions. It provides recommendations for developing proper benchmarks and for ensuring optimum condenser performance.

Full text
Abstract:
Many sociologists have for a long time based their research on the work published in the 1970s, in which universities were regarded as organisations that operate in a particular way. They were approximated to “organised anarchies” (Cohen et al., 1972) or to “loosely coupled systems” (Weick, 1976 ; Orton &amp;amp; Weick, 1990) which were considered host to “unclear technologies” (Cohen &amp;amp; March, 1974). This article call into question these concepts and confront them with the evolution of the piloting way of contemporary establishments of European higher education. The empirical material for this paper comes from the analysis of texts and reforms initiated in European universities. The paper will show the effects of standardization instruments on academic profession and how these instruments (and notably the learning outcomes approach) transform each segment of the university and generate a deep interdependence between all of them.

Monroe, D. M., D. W. Deerfield, D. L. Olson, et al. "BINDING OF CALCIUM TO HUMAN AND BOVINE FACTOR X." In XIth International Congress on Thrombosis and Haemostasis. Schattauer GmbH, 1987. http://dx.doi.org/10.1055/s-0038-1643835.

Full text
Abstract:
Human and bovine factor X contain 11 and 12 glutamyl residues respectively within the first forty amino terminal residues that are posttranslationally modified to y-carboxyglutamyl (Gla) residues. Calcium binding to these Gla residues and at other sites is critical for activity in factor X. We have measured calcium binding to human factor X by equilibrium dialysis for the first time. We have also re-examined calcium binding to bovine factor X in order to compare the two species. Factor X (10 μM) was incubated with 45Ca in 20 mM Tris (pH 7.5), 100 mM NaCl in a half cell separated by a 12-14000 molecular weight fast-equilib-rium disk membrane at 25°C for 24 hours. Four aliquots (100 μL each) were removed from each side of the cell and counted. Data were analyzed with a variety of models that allow for more than one class of binding site and for cooperativity among binding sites. Calcium binding to bovine factor X was best simulated by a model that assumes 1 very tight site, 3 cooperative tight sites, and 18 equivalent, non-interacting sites. Based on data from des(Gla)factor X, the first site is probably a high affinity non-Gla binding site. Our results differ from two previously published reports that indicated either 1 tight and 39 loose noncooperative sites (R.H. Yue &amp; M.M. Gertler (1978) Thrombos. Haemostas. (Stuttg.) 40, 350) or 20 calcium binding sites with the first 4 being cooperative (M.J. Lindhout &amp; H.C. Hemker (1978) Biochimica Biophysica Acta 533, 318). Our data on human factor X fit the same model as used for bovine factor X; however, coop-erativity is less in the 3 cooperative sites. Shown below are the first six thermodynamic equilibrium constants derived from a Scatchard analysis of binding data (values are M−1).Both proteins demonstrate the same total number of binding sites and essentially the same value for the first, tight binding site. Bovine factor X exhibits cooperativity, whereas human factor X has reduced cooperativity.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past thirty years Subsection NF of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section III, has been transformed from a basic set of structural rules to evaluate and qualify component supports to a dynamic Code that recognized the difference between pressure retaining and structural elements. Initially, with the publication of the 1974 Edition of the ASME Code, Subsection NF identified essentially two different types of supports, Plate &amp; Shell and Linear. Plate &amp; Shell supports were evaluated using in effect the same rules in Subsections NB, NC and ND for pressure retaining elements. Linear supports, on the other hand, were an odd group. The ASME Code was a pressure Code providing rules for pressure retaining components such as vessels, piping, valves, pumps, tanks etc. In 1963, when the first Edition of ASME Section III for nuclear plants was published, there wasn’t any place for non-pressure retaining elements such as component supports. This continued for eleven years until supports made their debut in the 1974 Edition of Section III (actually the 1973 Winter Addenda to the 1971 Edition). At this time the AISC Manual for Steel Construction was the premier set of rules for the design and construction of steel structures. Since many supports were comprised of structural steel elements due to the nature of loading (thermal and seismic) at nuclear power plants, the AISC Code seemed to be the ideal set of rules to adopt for the construction of supports. Additional requirements for temperature and seismic considerations were incorporated in Subsection NF to account for supports on nuclear plants.

Bedley, Mike. "Optimizing the Cost-Effectiveness of an Industrial Natural Gas Cogeneration Facility in a Regulated Electric Utility Environment." In ASME 2002 Citrus Engineering Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2002. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/cec2002-4805.

Full text
Abstract:
Since Congress enacted the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act (PURPA) in 1978, the electric utility industry has experienced many significant changes — legal, structural and technical. For purposes of this discussion, one of the more important changes that resulted was the installation of substantial electric generating capacity via “cogeneration” at industrial facilities nationwide. PURPA defined, and created by law, entities known as “qualifying facilities” or “QFs”, and established a framework in which they were allowed to compete with utilities in both the wholesale electric market (by sales for resale) and retail electric markets (by self-generation). The Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPAct92) took PURPA one step further, allow additional entities — such as Exempt Wholesale Generators (EWG), marketers and brokers — to participate in the wholesale electric markets, forever changing the once monopolistic structure of the electric industry. Importantly, from a legal, structural and technical standpoint, QFs continue to enjoy advantages over other generators - both utility and non-utility. The legal and structural framework continue to favor QFs and technically, the equipment available for cogeneration facilities is significantly more efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly than in the past. Cogeneration can be a very cost-effective option for large energy users, providing in many instances the only alternative to purchasing electricity from the monopoly utility. Abstract:
This paper traces the evolution of enhanced boiling surfaces. Early work was highly empirical and done in industrial research. The 1968 Milton patent described the first porous coated surface, and the 1971 Webb patent described a “structured” tube surface geometry. The first fundamental understanding of the “pore-and-tunnel” geometry was published by Nakayama in 1980. Webb and Chien’s flow visualization allowed observation of the evaporation in the sub-surface tunnels. They also performed an experimental parametric study that defines the effect of pore diameter and pitch on the boiling performance. The progression of work on analytical boiling models is also reviewed.

Rice, Dale A., A. Fitzgerald Waterland, and Anita R. Bausman. "Exploring M & Y Gasket Factors and Their Degree of Correlation With Proposed PVRC Gasket Factors." In ASME 2017 Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/pvp2017-65734.

Full text
Abstract:
The well-known gasket factors, m &amp; y were introduced in 1943 as per ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Division 1 for purposes of flange design. The test procedure for determining these factors, ASTM Standard F586, was published in 1979 but then ultimately withdrawn in 1998 with the assumption that these test standards would be replaced by a new test method and with it the generation of improved gasket constants. The original m &amp; y constants had several shortcomings including the fact that many of the listed values assumed asbestos fiber gaskets while new gasket materials such as PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) and FG (flexible graphite) were not addressed. Additionally, gasket manufacturers were allowed to publish m and y values for their own specific gasket materials and styles using their own test methods, thus dispensing with industry-wide standardization. ASTM Method F3149-15, “Standard Practice for Determining the Maintenance Factor (m) and Yield Factor (y) Loading Constants Applicable to Gasket Materials and Designs” represents an improvement over F586 but is not linked to standardized tightness levels. The proposed PVRC method with a new set of gasket constants is based on a load versus leakage test standard known as ROTT (Room Temperature Tightness Test). Following the ROTT method, ASTM WK39360, “New Test Method for Leak Rates Versus Y Stresses and M Factors for Gaskets derived from the Room Temperature Test Practice”, is being contemplated. This paper provides a review of the past inconsistencies of m &amp; y values as published as well as an initial assessment of the degree of correlation between m &amp; y values and tightness calculations achieved through the use of a previously documented fugitive emissions calculator for gasket materials which makes use of published ROTT data, and the operating pressure, flange NPS, gasket stress, and other inputs.

Full text
Abstract:
Excessive bitterness in citrus juices has been extensively studied in the past due to a reduction in juice quality. In the late 1970’s, Australia began to commercially debitter citrus juices using cellulose acetate beads. However, due to operational problems, this plant was shutdown. Continued research has led to the first commercial debittering installation in the United States. Using a proprietary styrene/divinylbenzene hydrophylic adsorbent, a citrus debittering system was started in 1988 to debitter navel orange juice. The automatic citrus debittering system was designed for continuous operation at an operator’s selectable flow rate from between 20 to 55 gallons per minute. The determination of the economics, compositional analysis and taste of the treated products was the focus of this study. Paper published with permission.

Abstract:
On July 3, 1964 TransCanada PipeLines Limited commissioned the first Rolls-Royce Industrial Avon, in a Cooper Bessemer pipeline compressor set. In 1986, Cooper-Rolls introduced upgraded versions of the Avon (1535E) and power turbine (RT48S). In 1987, TransCanada converted an Avon to 1535E standard at one location and power turbines to RT48S at two other locations. Following one year of acceptable operation, four units were converted to the “Production” standard with both Avon and power turbine upgraded in 1988. Testing showed the old, modified units to achieve the performance guaranteed for new engines. The condition of the lead Avon 1535E at tear-down after 6000 hours is described, together with a statement on condition after 15000 hours. The four units modified in 1988 were torn down for inspection during the Summer of 1989, and their condition is discussed. Minor operating difficulties are described together with their solutions. This paper publishes work that was presented without publication at the Toronto conference in June 1989 together with new information which has become available since that time.
