Abstract:
Under the regime of corporate governance Indian regulatory authorities are keeping update of disclosure practices to ensure the transparency, true and fair disclosure in corporate reporting. The stakeholders are also considering the true and fair corporate financial reporting as an important parameter for their analysis. The most reliable channel for this reporting is taken as published annual reports. In these annual reports corporates are disclosing all the mandatory information, but along with the mandatory information the corporates are also providing voluntary information, which is highly considered by the users. This paper has tried to examine the level of corporate disclosure on the basis of information disclosed voluntarily in the published annual reports. The Study was based on firms listed on S&P CNX Nifty. The final sample consists of published annual reports of 50 companies which were studied for a period of five years that is 2011-2016. The study concluded that these large cap companies give more importance to financial nature items, limited number of companies have considered other items of the index for voluntary disclosure .On the basis of statistical analysis the study has also concluded that no company has reached to the disclosure of more than 100 items. There is a slight change in the yearly mean disclosure of the companies.

In this article, it is suggested that accounting education may be enhanced by the use of published historical accounting materials, such as annual reports. Comparing such materials with modern reports serves to reinforce the notion that accounting evolves in response to environmental change. Further, requiring students to analytically derive cash flow statements from historical published annual reports provides several direct pedagogical benefits.

Experience has shown that for the country as a whole the estimates, with few exceptions, are close to the subsequent final figures. There are, however, considerable variations in some states, particularly in comparing data by place of occurrence and place of residence. State information should be interpreted cautiously.

Abstract:
The Sharia Court of Appeal (first created in 1960) is a superior court of record that hears appeals from the area courts and Sharia courts in Islamic personal law cases only. Appeals from the Sharia Courts of Appeal go to the Court of Appeal and finally, to the Supreme Court. Lawyers gained the right of audience in the Sharia Courts of Appeal and qualified for appointment as Kadis of the court in 1985 and 1999 respectively. Reports of the Sharia Courts of Appeal judgments are hard to come by. An exception is the Kwara State Sharia Court of Appeal that has published its Annual Reports for the years 1993 to 2015. The Annual Report was renamed Law Reports and the Law Reports for 2016 and 2020 have been published. This paper gives a conceptual and historical background to Islamic law reporting, analyses the 2000 Annual Report and 2020 Law Report (the maiden editions respectively) and examines the prospects of reporting cases of the court. The study finds some differences in the formats of the annual reports and the law reports; inconsistencies in the court’s referencing style and the transliteration schemes, and that the reports are useful to lawyers and academics alike. The paper recommends that the judgments in the court should not be unduly long; that the referencing style and transliteration scheme for Arabic sources should be standardized; and that while the reports be encouraged and sustained, the concept of stare decisis should not become entrenched in Islamic courts.

Purpose This paper aims to examine knowledge production and problem representation with regard to new psychoactive substances (NPS) in Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Prisons (HMCIP) annual reports. Design/methodology/approach Seven annual reports published by HMCIP for England and Wales between 2014 and 2020 have been systematically reviewed drawing on thematic analysis. Findings This paper demonstrates how framing in HMCIP annual reports produced a characterisation of NPS in prisons that inadvertently obstructed gender-sensitive knowledge production and problem representation. The framing formalised knowledge silences about spice in women’s prisons. Originality/value HMCIP annual reports monitor drugs in prisons and this affects how these spaces are represented to government and other stakeholders. This paper provides theoretical and practical insights into how gender-blind knowledge is produced by discussing examples of gender-blind drug representations in a specific policy context.

Abstract:
The 2008 financial crisis severely undermined public trust in banking systems, prompting calls for widespread reform. However, irregularities continued, leading to a further succession of scandals over the following years. We should therefore ask how banks justified the catastrophe and their failure to reform. This chapter examines two large UK-based banks: Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), and HSBC. All the “letters to shareholders” published in their Annual Reports over 15 years are examined for commonplace arguments or “topoi” offered as justifications for their failure to comply with ethical standards. Five typical recurring arguments are analysed, with a particular focus on their use in subtle manipulations of public opinion to draw attention away from the scale and impact of corporate wrongdoing.

Abstract:
This paper presents the Milan Open Data (OD) platform as a means to provide statistics and data in the framework of “Data-Driven Milan”, a city where policy decisions are taken in an “informed and aware” way using data. Open Data are ever more important in providing citizen communities with useful information. Over the last 10 years, the municipality of Milan has developed its OD platform from an experimental portal to a fully-fledged portal with more than 1,600 datasets, implemented a Linked Open Data (LOD) system and 8 advanced data visualization projects, and produced OD policies and operating guidelines. The OD portal is based on the CKAN technology, which makes datasets available via both download and Application Programming Interfaces. It currently has about 9,000 unique visitors per month. Data are also published as tables on the statistical portal and maps on the geo-portal. A single entry point to the three portals is about to be released. The advanced visualization projects make data available as reader-friendly graphics. Depending on its topic, a project might be a storytelling of the city through key statistics, a means to communicate the administration’s achievements, or a “data democratization” operation, such as “Open bilancio”, which publishes detailed information about the municipality’s annual budget. LOD are semantically enriched and machine-readable data that help to implement data interoperability between distributed systems. The ongoing LOD automation project aims to improve the current system by minimizing manual operations in the dataset lifecycle. Three Municipal Resolutions have been issued to define OD governance: the first establishes that data are released under an Open License, to promote the digital economy; the second promotes data interoperability and quality; and the third, issued in 2021, establishes the guidelines and an operating model for OD governance, including ontology-supported data publishing.

Abstract:
Abstract According to the Global Nonwoven Markets Report 2020–2025, published in 2021 by the two leading trading organisations representing nonwovens and related industries INDA and EDANA, the average annual growth rate of nonwoven production was 6.2% (INDA and EDANA Jointly Publish the Global Nonwoven Markets Report, A Comprehensive Survey and Outlook Assessing Growth Post-Pandemic, edana, 2021, Published September 29, 2021, from https://www.edana.org/about-us/news/global-nonwoven-markets-report) during the period from 2010 to 2020. In 2020 and 2021, nonwoven production has increased even further due to the huge demand for nonwoven products needed for protectiedanave clothing such as FFP2 masks to combat the COVID19 pandemic. Optimizing the production process is still a challenge due to its high nonlinearity. In this chapter, we present a machine learning-based optimization workflow aimed at improving the homogeneity of spunbond nonwovens. The optimization workflow is based on a mathematical model that simulates the microstructures of nonwovens. Based on training data coming from this simulator, different machine learning algorithms are trained in order to find a surrogate model for the time-consuming simulator. Human validation is employed to verify the outputs of machine learning algorithms by assessing the aesthetics of the nonwovens. We include scientific and expert knowledge into the training data to reduce the computational costs involved in the optimization process. We demonstrate the necessity and effectiveness of our workflow in optimizing the homogeneity of nonwovens.

Abstract:
AbstractCerebral palsy is a pathological condition whose prevention and treatment have been immensely studied by experts in perinatal medicine and pediatric neurology. Despite this, it is still one of the main concerns nowadays in many countries, not only for scientific reasons but for legal ones also. For instance, in Japan, an increase in lawsuits relating to cerebral palsy was observed more than a decade ago, after healthcare resources in perinatal medicine had increasingly shrunk and had become fragile under the growing burden for physicians and midwives to provide advanced treatment, emergent care, high-risk treatment, and so on. Young physicians did not specialize in obstetrics because of the increased burden, which gave rise to a vicious cycle of shrinking resources in perinatal medicine. To address this issue, the Japan Obstetric Compensation System for Cerebral Palsy (JOCS-CP) was urgently introduced in 2009 to investigate, develop preventive measures, and award monetary compensation on a no-fault basis, with the Japan Council for Quality Health Care (JQ) as its operating organization (Fig. 33.1). It has so far produced annual reports on the prevention of cerebral palsy for nine consecutive years including numerical data and specific themes relating to the occurrence and prevention of cerebral palsy. The success of the system is a good reference for responding to adverse events which may happen in and have a vast impact on perinatal care. Therefore, this chapter focuses on cerebral palsy with primary reference to materials published by the JOCS-CP in the field of perinatal medicine. The aim of this chapter is to learn about the issues mentioned above and to discuss the significance and impact of introducing a nationwide system like the JOCS-CP. It describes knowledge and idea to questions of “Why cerebral palsy is highlighted among adverse event in obstetrics?”, “How the no-fault compensation/investigation/prevention system could be introduced?”, “What has been achieved by the system?”, and “How cerebral palsy is prevented?”.

Abstract:
AbstractAfter countries recognized the profound significance of assessing social and environmental performance as a prerequisite for sustainable business existence, various nongovernmental organizations as well as regulatory bodies developed measurement scales to gauge this performance. In this paper, we refer to one such assessment tool, B Impact Assessment (BIA), proposed by B Corps to benchmark the reporting framework of Indian companies for their social and environmental performance. The listed Indian companies were required to publish business responsibility reporting (BRR) which lacks generalization with other international standards. In this study, we consider BRR and propose a revised Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR) framework to make it comparable and compatible with BIA, which is acceptable worldwide. Also, we introduce measurement scores of the BRR at a granular level—taking 109 items of the existing scale and 13 items identified after benchmarking with BIA, together aggregating to maximum score of 200. In addition, to support the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA) to analyze the completeness, accuracy, and clarity of BRR, we apply scoring mechanism to develop sections A and B of the BRSR. The universal applicability of scale and benchmarking with internationally acceptable BIA will encourage more Indian companies to adopt social responsibilities and will make the assurance of annual report simple. Moreover, the proposed scale can also be used to identify companies that are eligible for the proposed Social Security Exchange in India. We expect that the findings will contribute to the literature on social responsibility and corporate sustainability and in practice accelerate the “CSR movement” in India.

AbstractFiskerstrand Verft is a multipurpose shipyard with extensive expertise and activities in shipbuilding, maintenance, repair and conversion/modification of ships. The yard is exposed to a range of different environmental challenges related to its business which trigged the yard to develop and implement health and safety, and environmental management systems. This chapter gives an overview of environmental management at Fiskerstrand Verft over a 30-year period, written from the perspective of the first author as CEO. The activities from 1991–94 mainly considered Level 1 in the CapSEM Model with annual accounting of materials and wastes, emissions to air and discharges to ocean. The yard participated in various R & D environmental projects and during the period 1994–99 these were extended with activities corresponding to life cycle thinking according to Levels 2 and 3. In 1999, Fiskerstrand Verft was the first Norwegian shipyard that prepared and published an environmental report. The yard was certified as an environmental lighthouse company in 2000, the first in Norway. During the period 2004–2008, the yard further developed their systems and began to transition to Level 4. The life cycle perspective for ships and technology has been at the center of the development of green technologies for ships. This journey continues today, passing the 30 year mark, and has contributed invaluable knowledge about the CapSEM toolbox and how it can be applied to shipyard operations.

Abstract:
AbstractItaly has been the first country in the world to adopt the US benefit corporation model (so-called società benefit (SB)), which it transplanted into its legal system at the end of 2015. The Italian società benefit statute is a mix between the US Model Benefit Corporation Legislation and the Delaware Public Benefit Corporation Act but is characterized by some peculiar features, such as the scope of the legislation, which is applicable to all for-profit and cooperative organizational forms provided by the law, and the existence of a public enforcement mechanism based on the attribution of supervisory powers to the Italian Competition Authority. A few years after its introduction, società benefit seems to have been widely accepted, and the movement continues to grow. Furthermore, the Italian legal system continues to support the spread of the SB model, e.g., through the 2019 amendment of the “Public Contract Code,” which introduced new reward criteria for tendering companies that publish the annual report required by the società benefit law to assess their social and environmental impacts. From a comparative law perspective, the Italian “for-benefit” model has been the first one adopted by a civil law system and seems to have influenced other civil law countries.

Abstract:
Abstract Sweden has been hailed for its recent success in increasing the number of female directors, scriptwriters and producers. Published reports, panel discussions and a vast number of press conferences on the pressing matter of gender equality within the industry together with a 5050 quota have all put the Swedish film industry—and its CEO Anna Serner—on the map. However, the last couple of years has disclosed several scandals regarding sexism and discrimination in the Swedish film industry—just as in other national film industries. This paper sets out to discuss how female film workers (e.g., directors, actors and producers) understand and negotiate their experiences of male dominance within their work context. Based on a series of interviews with women working in Swedish film from the early 1960s until today, we analyze similarities and differences in experiences as well as how these experiences are explained by the interviewees. Their stories are analyzed by using feminist institutional theory to understand how policy, funding schemes and other institutional aspects are intertwined with their experiences. The paper sets out to analyze three themes: (1) comments and suggestions during production and post-production regarding female protagonists; (2) experience of gender trouble in the process of fundraising; and (3) strategies used by the interviewed filmmakers to produce a more women-friendly environment during productions.

Abstract:
AbstractPatient safety is a fundamental principle of health care. However, many medical practices and risks associated with health care are emerging as major challenges for patient safety globally and contribute significantly to the burden of harm due to unsafe care. Available evidence suggests hospitalizations in low- and middle-income countries lead annually to 134 million adverse events, contributing to 2.6 million deaths. About 134 million adverse events worldwide give rise to 2.6 million deaths every year. Estimates indicate that in high-income countries, about 1 in 10 patients is harmed while receiving hospital care. This problem affects both high-income countries and low- and middle countries even if priorities and issues may differ. The most important adverse events concern medication procedures, healthcare-associated infections, surgical procedures, injection safety, blood transfusions, venous thromboembolism, sepsis, and diagnostic and radiation errors. Since 1999 when the Institute of Medicine (IOM) published its report “To err is human,” some progress has been made but patient harm is still a daily problem in healthcare. As a matter of fact, new threats are emerging due to population aging, along with new treatments and technologies which must be dealt with in addition to still-unresolved, long-standing problems. In this context, it is very important to adopt an international common strategy that creates networks, shares knowledge, programs, tools, good practices and develop and track indicators focusing on the specific priorities of each country and region.

Abstract:
This paper describes the continuing research at the University of Liverpool in the myCopter project to develop handling qualities guidelines and criteria for a new category of aircraft - the personal aerial vehicle (PAV), which, it is envisaged, should demand no more skill to fly than that associated with driving a car today. Previously published research showed that a translational rate command (TRC) response type allowed a majority of 'flight-naïve' pilots to operate within desired performance limits in a series of hover and low speed tasks in good environmental conditions. This paper extends the research by exploring the impact of degrading the usable cue environment and introducing atmospheric disturbances on performance in these tasks. Results from simulation trials involving test subjects with little or no flight experience are reported, showing that, in general, task performance can be maintained with the TRC response type, although workload increases. The paper concludes that the TRC response type remains suitable for use by 'flight-naïve' pilots in PAVs, even in degraded environmental conditions.

Abstract:
The importance of evaluating companies and measuring their performance is evidenced by a number of cases, for example, global phenomena going on currently. Not so long ago, in 2013, the European Parliament and the Council adopted the Directive 2013/34/EU, which is mandatory and provides comparable and clear financial statements of companies. Therefore, the study applies mainly the method of scientific literature synthesis and compares studies carried out in various Central and Eastern European countries. They are related to the use of the Balanced Scorecard performance measurement method applied in stock companies. In parallel, the perspectives of key stakeholders are also reviewed based on their published reporting practices. The comparison shows that the Balanced Scorecard method is really suitable for external users. Important information, measures and performance indicators can be reported and analysed using the company’s annual reports.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between the ESG risk management framework disclosure and GDP. We examined annual risk and sustainability reports published by 26 banks in the Visegrád Four countries (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia) during the period of 2017-2021. We applied content analysis and developed the ESG Framework Disclosure index (FD) to provide a comprehensive overview on how banks are committed to the integration of ESG aspects into their risk management system. Panel regression was performed to improve and ensure the robustness of our study. We found that our index is positively and significantly influenced by GDP per capita, as well as by bank size and capital adequacy.

Full text
Abstract:
The Sustainable Development Goals have become indispensable for the international agenda since their official launch in 2015. Corroborated, the publication of the yearly SDG reports represents a candid focal point for the gained progress, as long as a clear depiction of the global challenges, resources, and knowledge. Thus, in the 2016-2023 period, eight annual reports have been published, containing more than 500 content pages. Starting from those, we aim to design an explorative analysis framework, through the computation of several language processing techniques from the family of text mining, and sentiment analysis. Our objective will be to identify the top-level hot topics of every year, while also pinpointing certain temporal dynamics in terms of new or recurrent subjects, international threats, or social-economic discourse elements. Deep-diving into the methodological instruments, the analysis will be based on a mix of techniques, starting from the illustration of the most common terms and collocations. Afterward, we will apply the Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency algorithm to highlight the importance of several words relative to the entire collection of documents, with a focus on the evolutive dimension. Going forward, we will evaluate the sentiment scores for each report, to assess whether in certain moments the general tone of the conversation has switched to a more negative or positive valence. Throughout the applicative section, we will present the results through several graphical visualisations meant to better profile the connections between concepts. Finally, we consider the current approach to be valuable for understanding the general evolutions in terms of sustainable development, creating a summative and computational-based exploration of the progress generated worldwide in the last decade.

Abstract:
Thermal plasma torches convert electricity to high-temperature thermal energy by applying a high voltage across a flowing gas stream. Plasma torches are used extensively for producing metallic and ceramic coatings and also for vitrifying hazardous materials, such as asbestos-contaminated wastes. In the last decade, several thermal plasma processes have been proposed for treating municipal solid wastes (MSW). This research is based on a critical analysis of previous work by the Earth Engineering Center and on published reports and examines the possibilities for the proposed thermal plasma (TP) processes to be recover energy from MSW as an alternative to the conventional waste-to-energy (WTE) by grate combustion. In particular, this study will investigate two prominent thermal plasma technologies that are presently under development: The Alter NRG “Westinghouse” process in the U.S. and the Europlasma process in France. The environmental impacts and the technical economic aspects of plasma-assisted WTE processes will be compared to the traditional process of MSW combustion on a moving grate.

Abstract:
Introduction: The United Nations launched the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015. One of these goals describes achieving a Universal Health Coverage by 2030. This signifies workforce planning in healthcare professions (United Nations, 2015). The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) published reports about pharmacy workforce planning in several countries. However, data about Qatar was not included in these reports. In 2017, FIP developed a transformational roadmap of pharmaceutical workforce and education. One component of the roadmap is the Pharmaceutical Workforce Development Goals (PWDGs) (International Pharmaceutical Federation, 2016). This research aims to conduct a self-assessment of the pharmaceutical workforce and education in Qatar in relation to the FIP’s PWDGs. This will be followed by prioritization of the identified gaps and recommendation of measures to address them. Methods: Three rounds of conventional Delphi technique (Hasson et al., 2000) are conducted with expert panels in the College of Pharmacy at Qatar University and the Ministry of Public Health, utilizing the FIP’s self-assessment survey. Content analysis is used to analyse and prioritize the identified gaps. Results: The lack of competency framework (PWDG5), workforce data (PWDG12), and workforce policy formation (PWDG13) are the three major gaps in the provision of pharmaceutical workforce and pharmacy education in Qatar, influencing other PWDGs. These gaps need to be addressed by the formation of Qatari Pharmaceutical Association through which academic, practice, and policymaking sectors can work together in developing a health workforce intelligence system. Conclusion: The results indicated that PWDGs are interrelated and a gap in one goal can negatively influence others (Bruno et al., 2018). Results and recommendations of this research will facilitate the implementation of strategic plans across leading pharmacy sectors to meet health needs in Qatar and achieve the third pillar of the Qatar National Vision 2030 “A Healthy Population: Physically and Mentally” (General Secretariat for Development, 2008).

Abstract:
Ernst Otto Schmidt is practically unknown in the row of aeronautical and especially helicopter pioneers. This is because his profession was a decoration painter and he earned good reputation at the time. However, he also was fascinated by the idea to vertically take off and land with a machine, experimented more than half of his life with models and held two patents for his designs (issued 1924 and 1939). Oral reports state that one demonstration flight was performed in 1929 and a U.S. businessman offered funding that Schmidt denied. Schmidt was afraid of being laughed at and kept his experiments secret for a long time. Without a wealthy sponsor his designs never came to fruition, partly because he also lacked any aeronautical engineering education. However, some ideas he had were realized by others at much later times. A book about Ernst Otto Schmidt was published by his grandson, the co-author of this paper. Additional personal correspondence from his family archive and further material found by the author are provided here for the first time.

Abstract:
Introduction: Traumatic injuries in pregnant women are the leading cause of non-obstetric death and affect 6% to 8% of all pregnancies. Therefore, it is imperative to maintain updated guidelines to construct a framework for the optimal management strategies for traumatic injuries in pregnant women, considering the perspectives of obstetrics/gynecology, emergency medicine, and orthopedics. Methods: To conduct this study, research was done via a database search through the Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine’s research library. PubMed was the sole database used to review 8 peer-reviewed sources. Articles that were published within the last 10 years were chosen. Results: Every woman with significant traumatic injuries must have pregnancy ruled out given its unique physiologic characteristics. First responders gather history surrounding fetal movement, contractions, and vaginal bleeding. Stabilization includes fetal monitoring, fluid resuscitation, blood transfusions, and maternal repositioning. Laboratory studies and diagnostic imaging (ultrasound) do not harm the mother or baby and reflect fetal status. Sometimes, emergency cesarean delivery (≤ 5 minutes of arrest) is indicated. There are some reports of fetal survival and maternal benefit beyond 15 minutes of arrest. Domestic violence is the most common trauma mechanism for pregnant women and triggers several obstetric complications (fetal loss, pre-term delivery, and placental abruption). Conclusion: Adverse outcomes of pregnancy happen more frequently following trauma. Non-emergent trauma may be managed conservatively, delaying treatment until after delivery. Surgical positioning, medication administration, and diagnostic imaging determine the best outcomes for the mother and child.

Zarabadi, Ladan. "Appropriation of Space – Perpetuation of Patriarchy: A Feminist Critique on Public Space Design in Iran." In 108th Annual Meeting Proceedings. ACSA Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.35483/acsa.am.108.149.

Full text
Abstract:
This research uses a feminist lens to examine Iranian urban public parks designed for use by women only. The purpose of this paper is to reveal translations of patriarchal cultural values from an architectural micro scale to an urban macro scale and question the (over) contextualization of these parks’ design. Although this is a multifaceted topic that also merits ethnographic analysis, this particular paper primarily examines the physicality of the space. I draw on Henri Lefebvre’s theory of production of space, Stephen Graham’s urban militarization, and Jürgen Habermas’s and Nancy Fraser’s views of public spheres to theorize women-only parks’ existence as a hegemonic production of space. I argue that despite the Iranian government’s claim that the purpose of these women- only parks is to provide women a safe and free public space, this type of urban public space actually appropriates the design logic of courtyard houses, materializes patriarchal culture, and perpetuates patriarchal values in an urban configuration. In other words, women-only parks in Iranian cities are an embodiment of patriarchal culture in which gender segregation is used as a strategy to fulfill Islamic values and disguise patriarchal dispositions into a false sense of spatial and gender justice. This qualitative and interdisciplinary research uses a mixed method approach (alternating between formal and discursive analyses as needed) and multiple sources of data. Data collected on-site from women-only parks in Tehran (including photos and videos) serves as the primary source for this analysis. I also use reports from online news agencies and social media, as well as previously published interviews conducted by sociology scholars.

Richards, Robin. Can PDIA be Used at a Strategic Level in Multi-Donor Trust Funds and Across Various Phases of Downstream Projects? Institute of Development Studies, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2022.112.

Full text
Abstract:
This rapid review investigated whether PDIA can be used successfully in Multi-Donor Trust Funds (MDTF) at a strategic level and also across various phases of downstream projects (Verheijen, 2017 and World Bank 2018). The review also identified best practices across the whole programme iteration cycle. The review found that PDIA can be successfully used in MDTF’s and across the various phases of downstream projects. There were few examples illustrating the use the PDIA approach in Multi-Donor Trust Fund interventions. The body of published research on the use of PDIA was relatively small. However, there was more literature on the use of PDIA in large scale interventions generally at system-wide level and lower down, at project level. Literature was mainly from grey sources, including case studies published by organisations; reports from multi-donor projects; university projects; online blogs; and annual reports from development and funding organisations. Sources for the review were quite recent, between the periods 2010-2021.

Full text
Abstract:
Latin American Trade Trend Estimates is an annual study published by the Integration and Trade Sector of the Inter-American Development Bank that analyses the region's trade performance based on available national and international data for selected countries. For 2013, the study reports that Latin American exports stagnated, posting a second straight year of sluggish growth. Export increases were barely over 0%, for a total value of slightly more than $1 trillion. It is also noted that the region's exports actually declined in the first months of the year, continuing a negative trend that began in late 2012. However, in the third quarter, exports began to grow again, and current estimates point to a small positive overall growth rate for the year. Results varied considerably among countries. Brazil, Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela all posted declines in exports, while Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay and Uruguay posted increases. Results in Central America were mixed, with exports barely growing in Costa Rica and Guatemala, declining in Honduras and Nicaragua, but expanding in El Salvador, and Panama.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2010 the National Park Service (NPS) Southeast Coast Network (SECN) Inventory and Monitoring Program began collecting water-quality data in the estuarine waters near Fort Matanzas National Monument (FOMA) as part of the NPS Vital Signs monitoring program. The continuous-monitoring data station is located at the visitors center dock. This station collects pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, salinity, specific conductance, turbidity, and water-level data every 30 minutes. The FOMA fixed-station water-quality monitoring site is part of the SECN estuarine water-quality monitoring program, which routinely collects data in the vicinity of seven coastal parks located along the southeastern U.S. coast (DeVivo et al. 2008). Summary data are presented in annual data reports published by the network. Information collected by this monitoring program will be used to help managers make better-informed decisions by understanding trends and variability related to water-quality conditions in park waters. Summary findings below are based on continuous data and discrete sampling collected during 1 January 2013–31 December 2014.

Abstract:
The 2023 Hip, Knee and Shoulder Arthroplasty Report is based on the analysis of 1,982,200 (850,603 hip, 1,046,247 knee and 85,350 shoulder) primary and revision procedures recorded by the Registry, with a procedure date up to and including 31 December 2022. As with last year’s Annual Report, to ensure that the relevance and currency of AOANJRR data are maintained, almost all analyses (unless specifically stated) have been confined to hip, knee and shoulder prostheses that were still being used in 2022. Again, historic data are still available in previous Annual Reports on the AOANJRR website. This year, the Registry is again providing an update on the impact of COVID-19 on joint replacement in Australia during 2022 and comparisons to 2020 and 2021, and to the pre-COVID year 2019. In addition to the main report, the Registry continues to publish Supplementary Reports. They include a Lay Summary of the main report and 15 additional reports on arthroplasty topics. The report introduces a special chapter addressing the challenge of infection in joint replacement surgeries, highlighting the steady increase in revision procedures due to infection since data collection began. Each year, the AOANJRR identifies prostheses with higher than anticipated rates of revision. This year, 4 total conventional hip, 3 total knee prostheses and 2 total stemmed reverse shoulder prostheses have been newly identified.

Abstract:
To demonstrate the value of research and its implementation, the Governor’s Office initially requested an annual financial analysis of the INDOT Research Program to determine the return on the research investment (ROI). The INDOT Research & Development (R&D) has continued to publish an annual Return on Investment report. The current financial analysis is for research projects that completed in FY 2022. Analyses on previous year’s projects is necessary primarily due to the time it takes some project outcomes to be implemented and verifiable data generated, extending into the following year. Therefore, the FY 2023 analysis is completed research projects in calendar 2022. The ROI analysis will supplement the annual IMPACT report by adding a more rigorous quantitative benefit cost analysis (BCA) to the Research Program. Previous financial analyses used the approach of calculating net present values of cash flows to determine a benefit cost ratio and this report uses the same approach. Additionally, an overall program rate of return (ROI) is reported and will be accumulated over time, a seven-year period.
