Abstract:
The thesis explores the complex relationship between modern audio technologies and the art of popular music through close scrutiny specific artefacts, a largely neglected area of musicological research. The detailed analyses presented here reveal the ways in which particular analogue and digital audio technologies are used, and how these have tended to shape and inform the musical and sonic characteristics of popular music recordings and related artefacts.

Crew, Danny Oliver. "Political discourse and American published sheet music : a commentary of four published works." Thesis, University of Sunderland, 2014. http://sure.sunderland.ac.uk/6581/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this commentary is to discuss the context and theoretical underpinnings that form the basis of my four publications, and how these works have made a meaningful contribution to the study of American socio-political discourse in general, and to the study of American historical music in particular. The study of American political history has principally focused on traditional primary and secondary sources for such inquiry: contemporary letters, journals and diaries, books, official documents, newspapers and other periodicals. One major primary source that has been largely overlooked is that of published music. Two factors have precipitated this oversight: historically, traditional musicology ignored popular music as having no scholarly legitimacy. Secondly, most repository institutions have ignored, or are unaware of, the historical context and relevance of socio-political sheet music, cataloging it as a one-dimensional artifact defined almost exclusively in musical terms such as “vocal,” “instrumental,” or “ballads,” and not for its historical context and non-musical relevance. Published music encompasses far more than just notation, structure and form; it illuminates a plethora of human activity far beyond the composer-listener archetype: performance, publishing, commercial enterprise, and socio-political context are only a few of these extra-musical facets of published music that can tell us not only about the composer and music itself, but also about the society in which it was created. It was the purpose of my four published works submitted herewith to begin to remedy these issues by illuminating a source of contemporary discourse that can shed a different light on history; a discourse oriented towards the popular masses rather than the educated elite. These four works broaden contemporary discourse in American history by providing historians with the knowledge of, and access to, this vast wealth of untapped resource material.

<p>The completion of the Human Genome Project, a remarkable feat by any measure, has provided over three billion bases of reference nucleotides for comparative studies. The next, and perhaps more challenging step is to analyse sequence variation and relate this information to important phenotypes. Most human sequence variations are characterized by structural complexity and, are hence, associated with abnormal functional dynamics. This thesis covers the assembly of a computational platform for verifying these variations, based on accurate, published, experimental data.</p>

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 1999.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study project explores cash value added statements (CVAS). a South African innovation. A complete survey is made of all the CV AS published by listed South African industrial companies from 1991 up to 1998. The survey yields a total of 18 listed South African industrials, which started to publish a CV AS in different years. Together, the 18 companies provide a population of 89 cash value added statements for analysis. The aim of the study is to establish how South African companies prepare a CV AS against a background which lacks a formal Accounting Standard on the subject. Secondly. it seeks to unravel any variations and mistakes presentation of published CY AS as measured against a standardized model of CY AS. In order to highlight the variations, a fault bank is created. An analysis of the fault bank reveals a number of differences in the treatment of certain components of a CV AS by listed South African industrial companies. Major deviations from the standardized model of a CVAS involve interest, dividends and taxation.<br>Please refer to fulltext for Afrikaans abstract

Abstract:
In this thesis, I present my published works in the broad field of medical microbiology. Over a period of thirty years I have worked in a range of settings,. including hospital and public health laboratories, major reference laboratories and academic science departments. I have studied significant public health issues associated with each position, and therefore, while there is no single theme in my work, the emphasis of my research has been very much on the development and validation of methods and their application to public health microbiology. My early work was on obligately anaerobic bacteria. I began to study Clostridium difficile during my doctoral research and continued for several years after I completed my PhD. My expertise in anaerobic microbiology led to several book chapters and ultimately to an undergraduate textbook and an edited volume on anaerobic microbiology methods. My work on anaerobic bacteria forms one of three themes in my commentary. During my tenure at the University of Ulster; I began to broaden my research to encompass pathogens in the environment. Areas of interest included the survival of pathogenic bacteria during anaerobic digestion of cattle slurry and the anaerobic bacterial flora of flax retting. I moved to the University of West Indies in Barbados, where for 13 years I taught microbiology to medical students and provided clinical microbiology support to the hospital and public health laboratories. This venue provided me with the opportunity to follow a diverse research agenda, with a strong concentration on diseases of local and regional public health importance. I have included some of this work in my third commentary theme, clinical and public health microbiology. My major contributions to the field have undoubtedly been in the diagnosis, taxonomy and epidemiology of leptospirosis. I began working on leptospirosis in 1992 in the former Medical Research Council laboratory in Barbados. My work here included both serological and molecular diagnostic studies, and epidemiological research on reservoir animals and other zoonotic diseases. After moving to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), my work was focussed on developing tools for molecular diagnosis and molecular typing of leptospires and on taxonomy of leptospires. At the CDC, I was also the Acting Chief of the Special Bacteriology Reference Laboratory. In this capacity, I had the opportunity to lead a group focussed on the identification and characterization of previously unrecognised bacterial pathogens. Some of this work is included in my third commentary theme. I moved to Saskatchewan in 2003, to my current position in the provincial public health laboratory. My research in Saskatchewan has been directed towards the use of molecular techniques for diagnosis and epidemiological typing of significant public health pathogens, while mentoring younger scientists. Community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is a public health challenge in our communities and I have made significant contributions to a collaborative effort to understand and control these infections in Saskatchewan. In recent years I also have assumed a leadership role in biosafety and biosecurity regulatory issues and in quality assurance and proficiency testing. An abbreviated copy of my curriculum vitae is included to provide an indication both of the range of my research work and my other contributions to the field. In the interests of brevity, papers presented at conferences and published abstracts are not included.

Abstract:
Catholic writers traditionally approach the laity through the sacraments rather than the Word. Nonetheless, three devotional genres - meditation, hagiography and catechism - recognize that effective written appeals to a reader can be made using rhetoric. This thesis analyses such rhetoric, in recusant devotional texts published by secret presses between 1580 and 1603. Most detailed examinations of Catholic works think of rhetoric as emasculating the virile yet chaste prose of a 'shining band of martyrs'. This thesis proposes that the rules of rhetoric are used to empower the reader of these works by Grafting a new character in him. Meditations act as deliberative orations, swaying the reader's will. They use amplificatio and memoria to produce matter and to dwell on it. Late sixteenth-century translations of continental meditation manuals by Granada, Scupoli, Estella and Loarte provide a theory of meditation for the English works studied: rosary texts by John Bucke, Thomas Worthington and Henry Garnet; several anonymous collections of meditations and prayers; contemplations on Scriptural stories by Robert Southwell, I.C., C.N. and Robert Chambers. In the second section, saints' lives are read as rhetorical examples which support this deliberative discourse, rather than as blazons, innocent of intent on the reader. Hagiographies by Worthington, Robert Persons, William Alien and Thorns Alfield reflect images of what a martyr or saint should do, not what he did. The last chapters show how catechisms recreate these idealized images in the reader by acting as dramatic scripts for him. Repetition through rhetoric dissolves the element of theatre, allowing the reader to absorb these rules for life. Once again, Elizabethan translations of foreign catechisms by Granada, Bellarmine and Canisius are used to illuminate English catechisms by Persons, Southwell and Lawrence Vaux.

Mullins, Sophie. "Latin books published in Paris, 1501-1540." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/6333.

Full text
Abstract:
This is a study of the Parisian Latin book industry in the first four decades of the sixteenth century. It challenges the assumption that the Reformation brought about a profound change in the European print world. Luther's engagement with a mass audience is believed to have led to an increase in the number of vernacular publications produced by printers throughout Europe. This was not the case in Paris. Parisian booksellers traded on their established expertise with certain genres, such as theological texts, educational books, and works by classical authors, to maximise their readership both in Paris and farther afield. Working in close proximity inspired the Parisian bookmen to unity and collaboration rather than enmity and direct competition. When printers, booksellers and publishers collaborated they were able to undertake bigger and riskier projects. Such projects might have involved testing new markets or technologies (such as Greek or music printing), or simply producing a book which required a high capital investment. The familial unity extended to the widows of printers, some of whom were able to capitalise on this and build substantial businesses of their own. This high level of collaboration and the continued focus on the established Latin market give the Parisian book world its very specific character. It also helped Paris build an international reputation for high-quality books.

Abstract:
This thesis is intended to demonstrate the existence of a vibrant cultural and literary life among the survivors of the Holocaust during their time as Displaced Persons (DPs) in Germany, Austria and Italy. It delineates their historical background, presents theoretical problems with which they may have been confronted, and explains the lack of previous academic research into their creative production. It then analyzes three representative literary journals from the period 1946 to 1949, when the DP population was at its peak: In Gang: khoydesh-zhurnal far literatur un kunst / khoydesh-zhurnal far literatur, kultur un gezelshaftlekhe problemen (In Progress: Monthly Journal of Literature and Art / Monthly Journal of Literature, Culture and Societal Problems), published in Rome between March 1947 and February 1949; Fun letstn khurbn: tsaytshrift far geshikhte fun yidishn lebn beysn natsi-rezhim (From the Last Extermination: Journal for the History of the Jewish People During the Nazi Regime), published in Munich between August 1946 and December 1948; and Shriftn far literatur, kunst un gezelshaftlekhe fragn (Writings for Literature, Art and Societal Questions), published in Kassel, Germany in January 1948. These journals were chosen because their editorial material reflected strong commitments to dealing with the political and especially the cultural issues of the day. These included the on-going examination of the possibility of Jewish cultural continuity, the drive for a Jewish state, and the attempt to come to terms with the immensity and horrors of the Holocaust. The thesis also includes an annotated bibliography of the contents of these three journals which is intended to improve their accessibility for future study.

Abstract:
The applicant's research has led to a substantial body of published work and 17 pieces from this work are submitted here. Of these, eight are in peer refereed journals testifying to the importance of the body of work submitted. The work has attracted external funding of £73,000 from North West Thames Regional Health Authority which attests further to the quality of the work undertaken. In addition the applicant's expertise in the area has been recognised internationally by her appointments as World Health Organisation Advisor (Guidelines on Counselling of HIV Infected and AIDS Patients; Intravenous Drug Use and Risk of HIV Infection) and as UK representative to the Commission of the European Communities (Prevention of AIDS for Intravenous Drug Users) and she has presented evidence to a Home Office Working Party (Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs) and acted as academic referee for several academic journals including AIDS, AIDS Care, and Addiction. The submitted research publications are based upon five studies drawing upon 623 injecting drug users (idus) surveyed between 1985 and October 1992. The demographic characteristics of the clients included in each of the studies did not vary substantially between studies. Three of the studies involved evaluation of interventions for harm minimisation and two of those included designs of innovative interventions. The remaining two were aimed at identifying trends in risk - related behaviours and risk reduction. The body of work with its regular data collection over a seven year period from one location in the UK charts the behavioural changes and service responses from a point in time when AIDS awareness among idus was virtually non-existent through the response to the awareness of risks of sharing injecting equipment, followed by the introduction of needle exchange schemes and their evaluation, awareness of sexual transmission risks and need for sexual counselling, provides a unique perspective. The first and the final study had longitudinal components but the over all behavioural and attitudinal trends are identified from cross-sectional data. The approach taken by the research was to place risk-related behaviours within a context of the idus' social lifestyles rather than isolating behaviours from the contexts in which they occur. This approach contrasts with the individualistic social-cognitive models that have been used by others rather unsuccessfully to try to account for health related risk behaviours. The aims of the research were to obtain accurate information about the behaviours of idus with specific reference to HIV transmission related behaviours especially injecting practices and sexual behaviours by (1) identifying the characteristics of idus attending a drug dependency unit and/or syringe exchange unit in Central London (2) examining the sexual and drug-related behaviours of clients attending those services and their risks for HIV infections.

Full text
Abstract:
The submitted publications relate to research on the epidemiology and control of diseases of importance in developing countries, and fall into two main classes. The first consists of research on methodological issues in statistics and epidemiology arising in the course of the field research. The second consists of substantive epidemiological research carried out in collaboration with scientists in developing countries over twenty years. The methodological research includes work on methods for assessing whether the change in a measured value depends on its initial value; alternative measures of diarrhoea morbidity; design issues in vaccine trials; use of the case-control study design to investigate risk factors for severe malaria; the development and validation of verbal autopsy instruments to diagnose cause of death in countries with inadequate vital resignation; studies of the bias resulting from poor methodological quality in randomised controlled trials; and use of attributable fraction methods to estimate the proportion of febrile episodes attributable to malaria and to evaluate alternative malaria case definitions. Design issues in cluster-randomised trials, particularly in the context of HIV intervention trials in developing countries, are also discussed. Among many publications on HIV infection is a key paper discussing the interaction of HIV and other sexually-transmitted disease (STDs). This argued the need for randomised trials of the impact of STD control on the HIV epidemic, and led to the first such trial in Mwanza Region, Tanzania. The Mwanza trial showed that improved STD treatment services resulted in a 40% reduction in HIV incidence in the general population, and that the intervention was highly cost-effective. This was the first randomised trial anywhere in the world to demonstrate the impact of prevention measures on HIV incidence in the general population. Other papers explore risk factors for HIV-1, HIV-2 and other STDs in a range of settings, the interaction of HIV and tuberculosis, the natural history of HIV infection, simulation models of HIV and other STDs, and the use of <i>Herpes simplex</i> virus type 2 infection as a marker of sexual risk behaviour in rural Africa.

Bagaeva, A. (Alexandra). "The quality of published accounting information in Russia." Doctoral thesis, University of Oulu, 2010. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9789514261985.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Since the collapse of the Soviet Union Russia has undergone a number of reforms towards developing market economy. Accounting has encountered dramatic changes over the last two decades. Despite attractive investment opportunities in Russia, investors are often faced with uncertainty, which makes it very important to explore the quality of accounting information published in Russia. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the quality of published accounting information in Russia. The thesis consists of four essays, each of them addressing the question of the quality of accounting information published in Russia by incorporating the specific Russian institutional environment. Special attention is paid to the role of International Financial Accounting Standards (IFRS) and foreign investors. The quality of published accounting information is conceptualized by such accounting constructs as conservatism, earnings management and value relevance. This first essay investigates the earnings quality of both listed and non-listed Russian firms and explores whether foreign ownership affects the quality of earnings published by non-listed Russian firms. The second essay examines whether emphasis on international investors is associated with the adoption of or intention to adopt IFRS in Russian firms. The third essay addresses the question of IFRS and Russian Accounting Standards (RAS) accounting quality by using the methodology proposed by Barth et al. (2008) and by value relevance constructs of accounting quality. The fourth essay investigates the value relevance of firms’ integral environmental impact, i.e. a proxy for environmental performance, following the stream of non-financial information value relevance in accounting research. This thesis provides evidence that the quality of published accounting information published in Russia depends on many factors, the most influential of these being listing on the stock exchange, IFRS and foreign investors. The results of the thesis demonstrate that the institutional characteristics of the country shape accounting numbers and influence the incentives of those preparing financial statements. The findings of the thesis include information valuable for regulators and investors.

Abstract:
Study project (MBA) -- University of Stellenbosch, 2001.<br>University of Stellenbosch Business School<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study considers share tips published in a respected publication, and determines whether an investment strategy based on the recommendations of its journalists could allow investors to exceed the stock market average. Six journalists were selected, and the recommendations that they made over a 30-month period grouped into “buy” and “do not buy” recommendations. The change in price of the recommended shares was measured after periods of one week, one month, three months and six months after the date of publication and after inclusion of dividends paid during those periods, returns were calculated. The returns attained for each share was compared to the return on the JSE-Overall Index during that period, the difference between the two being the excess return of the share. The excess returns of the shares recommended by each journalist were used to calculate portfolio excess returns, on which tests of statistical significance carried out. The portfolio of one journalist showed statistically significant excess returns in all four periods under review. One other achieved a statistically significant excess return over 1 week. No other portfolios achieved significant excess returns over the market.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In hierdie werkstuk word die aandeelwenke wat in ‘n gerespekteerde tydskrif gepubliseer is, ondersoek om vas te stel of ‘n beleggingsstrategie wat op die wenke van die joernaliste gebaseer is, die mark gemiddlede opbrengs kan klop. Abstract:
This thesis presents a subset of the author’s published works, and describes the impact his work has had on ocean forecasting systems. This impact can be broadly divided into two themes, the underpinning development of ocean forecasting models and the implementation, tuning and evaluation of those models to ensure they provide skilful products, with value to users. The systems described in this dissertation are recognised as amongst the best available, and are being used by commercial operators, military decisions makers and governmental organisations, as well as research users. They also form the basis on which future systems will be developed, meeting the challenges and addressing the priorities discussed in the thesis. The author expects to have a substantive impact on driving the research agenda in these areas over the coming years.

Abstract:
In addition to general knowledge on the official curriculum subjects, including the English language, schools convey multiple cultural and ideological meanings, playing a significant role in the processes of socialization and cultural reproduction. The function of school textbooks as powerful agents of socialization is realized through the texts and visuals in the content. Locally issued ELT materials, written in English by local authors, comprise a combination of local and foreign social meanings. Positive social change may be initiated by constant revision of cultural and ideological implications in educational media and subsequent exclusion of integrated biased meanings and linguistic forms reinforcing social inequities. This research study deals with gender representations and gender discriminatory meanings in ELT textbooks. It focuses on the ways gender-related social inequalities are reflected in texts and illustrations in two ELT series published by the Turkish Ministry of National Education and the Iranian Ministry of Education. Critical discourse analysis was chosen for investigation of gender issues integrated in the content of the textbooks. The study examined representations of female and male characters at code level in the pronoun and noun systems, at sentence level in reading passages and dialogues, and in visuals. The study revealed imbalance in representations of woman and man, and gender-related stereotypes in all examined categories of both ELT series. In both Turkish and Iranian textbook sets, traditional female and male roles depicting women as mothers and housewives and men as breadwinners were emphasized more than modern ones sustaining gender egalitarianism in public and family spheres. In contrast to women, men took active parts in all essential social fields, and bigger numbers of males than females were involved in texts and illustrations. Authors&rsquo<br>gender did not have a big influence on the results obtained by the current research. It was suggested that gender-related ideologies and stereotypes are shared, supported, and unconsciously reproduced by both women and men in a society.

Kannemeyer, Louw. "The applicability of published pavement deterioration models for national roads." Diss., University of Pretoria, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/37297.

Full text
Abstract:
The growing interest in pavement management systems (PMSs), both in South Mrica and internationally, has been in response to a shift in importance from the construction of new roads to the maintenance of the existing paved network coupled with increasingly restrictive road funding. In order to develop a balanced expenditure programme for the national roads of South Africa there is a need to predict the rate of deterioration of a pavement and the nature of the changes in its condition so that the timing, type and cost of maintenance needs could be estimated. Internationally these expected changes in pavement condition are predicted by pavement deterioration models, which normally are algorithms developed mathematically or from a study of pavement deterioration. Since no usable pavement deterioration models existed locally, it was necessary to evaluate overseas literature on pavement deterioration prediction models with the aim of identifying models possibly applicable to the national roads of South Africa. Only deterioration models developed from the deterioration results of inservice pavements under a normal traffic spectrum were evaluated. Models developed from accelerated testing were avoided since these models virtually eliminated long·term effects (these are primarily environmental but also include effects of the rest periods between loads), and that the unrepresentative traffic loading regimes can distort the behaviour of the pavement materials, which is often stress dependent. Models developed from the following studies were evaluated: • AASHO Road Test • The Kenya study • Brazil-UNDP study (HDM-ill models) • Texas study Of all the above models studied that were developed from major studies it was concluded that the incremental models developed during the Brazil study, were the most appropriate for further evaluation under South African conditions. A sensitivity analysis was conducted on the HDM-III models to evaluate their sensitivity to changes in the different parameters comprising each model. The results obtained from the sensitivity analysis indicate that the incremental roughness prediction model incorporated into the HDM-III model tends to be insensitive to changes in most parameters. Accuracy ranges for input data were, however, also identified for parameters which indicated an increase in sensitivity in certain ranges. The local applicability of the HDM-III deterioration models were finally evaluated by comparing HDM-III model predictions with the actually observed deterioration values of a selected number of national road pavement sections. To enable the above comparison, a validation procedure had to be developed according to which the format of existing data could be transformed to that required by the HDM-ill model, as well as additional information be calculated. From the comparison it was concluded that the HDM-III models are capable of accurately predicting the observed deterioration on South African national roads, but that for most models calibration is needed for local conditions. Guidelines regarding recommended calibration factor ranges for the different HDM-ill models are given. Finally it is recommended that the HDM-III models should be considered for incorporation into a balanced expenditure programme for the national roads of South Africa.<br>Dissertation (MEng)--University of Pretoria, 1993.<br>gm2014<br>Civil Engineering<br>MEng<br>Unrestricted

Abstract:
This study presents a topical and chronological analysis of the published works of Fritz Perls with particular attention to specified theoretical continua. The theoretical continua specified are: 1. Determinism vs. Free Will, 2. Unconscious vs. Conscious, 3. Monism vs. Dualism, A. Physical vs. Mental, 5. Nativism vs. Environmental ism, 6. Elementalism vs. Holism, 7. Reactive vs. Proactive, 8. Subjective vs. Objective, 9. Responsibility vs. Helplessness, 10. Thinking vs. Feeling, and 11. Heterostasis vs. Homeostasis. Each continuum is analyzed in reference to Perls' published thought and his stated beliefs are described and reported. Large sections of the dissertation are devoted to the intellectual, philosophical, and emotional influences that led Perls to write the theory of Gestalt therapy. The dissertation concludes with the report of Perls' position on each defined continuum, with discussion of empirical studies, Gestalt therapy and other major theories of counseling that hold parallel theoretical positions, concluding with a discussion of the limitations of the theory of Gestalt therapy and of this dissertation.

Mushohwe, Knowledge. "An analysis of selected cartoons published during Zimbabwe's 2008 elections." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/1609.

Full text
Abstract:
During Zimbabwe’s 2008 harmonised elections the country’s media laws had a direct impact on the way editorial cartoonists expressed themselves. Although the online newspapers were unregulated and the print media published under Zimbabwe’s media laws, Public Order and Security Act and Access to Information and Protection of Privacy act - the editorial cartoons from both sources show deliberate bias towards one candidate and contempt towards the main rival. The study contextualises the understanding of the editorial cartoon, as practised in an environment of freedom of speech and defined by the four categories identified by Press (1981) and Manning and Phiddian (2004), and delineates the effect of media laws on the newspaper industry in Zimbabwe. The four categories of editorial cartoons identified are descriptive editorial cartoons, laughing satirical editorial cartoons, destructive satirical editorial cartoons, and savage indignation editorial cartoons. The study reviews eight editorial cartoons, read using a semiotic framework investigating non-verbal communication, as defined and suggested by Du Plooy (1996), and a text and language grid, as suggested by Leech (1974), according to the criteria of symbols/metaphors, exaggeration/distortion, stereotypes, caricature, irony, captions, and background knowledge, as developed by Fetsko (2001). A comparative analysis of the cartoons reveals that objectives and functions of the unregulated zimonline.co.za and the regulated the Herald newspapers are the same. They constitute propagandistic representations of Zimbabwean politics that are more an extension of political ideology than they are a reflection of the country’s sociopolitical landscape.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper is based on an analytical study of 335 keywords extracted from titles and abstracts of 70 research articles, taking ten from each year starting from 2000 to 2006, in decreasing order of relevance, on the subject Fermi Liquid, which is a specific subject under the broad area of Condensed Matter Physics. The research articles have been collected from the bibliographic database of INSPEC. The keywords are indexed to critically examine its physical structure that is composed of three fundamental kernels, viz. keyphrase, modulator and qualifier. The keyphrase reflects the central concept, which is usually post-coordinated by the modulator to amend the central concept in accordance with the relevant context. The qualifier comes after the modulator to describe the particular state of the central concept and/or amended concept. The keywords are further classified in 16 classes on the basis of the four parameters, viz. Associativeness, chronological appearance, frequency of occurrence and category. The taxonomy of keywords will enable to analyze research-trend of a subject and to identify potential research-areas of a subject.

McLaughlin, Colleen. "The Human Aspects of Learning : a critical commentary on published work." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2008. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.504845.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a critical commentary on eleven works published between 1999 and 2008. The central concerns that infonn the body of work are the processes of human interaction in school and the effects and implications for teaching and learning. Two main strands are explored within these general overarching concerns: fIrst, the personal, social and emotional aspects of education and second, teachers learning through engaging with and in research. The publications discussed are qualitative research studies, usually conducted in partnership with practitioners, critiques of policy and the development of tools to assist thinking. The commentary begins with the author locating herself professionally. The publications are then considered chronologically and within the two strands referred to above. The fIelds of pastoral care and teacher research, within which these publications are located, are also discussed, as are theoretical frameworks infonning the writings. In the fmal section, the core themes that connect the two strands are extrapolated. The themes identifIed are: the affective aspects of education; relationships in education; the inclusion of vulnerable children in mainstream schooling; the conception of what it is to be a teacher; and teacher learning. The commentary considers the contribution made to the fIelds and the signillcance of the publications. The claims for the contribution are that the published works have contributed to the development of thinking in the fIelds of pastoral care and teacher learning through applied qualitative research; through the development of analytic tools and fmally, through critiques of current policy and practice.

This study aimed to analyze the penetration of critical environmental education in articles published in ANPEd – National Association of Graduate Studies and Research in Education – in the period between 2005 and 2013. To reach the goal of the research work published in the period cited above were classified according to its theme axis. In all, 27 themes were identified, most of the works entered in the axis entitled critical environmental education. Thus it focused on the analysis of it. The theoretical framework was built from the Henry Leff work. The methodology used in this analysis was built from the propositions of Bardin, in the case of carrying a qualitative analysis built through content analysis. As for the results it was noticeable that the articles analyzed are presented critically by category of analysis that were used as well as the compatibility of the theoretical framework adopted. Articles proved consistent with no contradictions in their speeches. However some limitations in intellectual production investigated could be identified. Among these limitations we can highlight the lack of dialogue with the classics of the environmental education field as well as the lack of depth in discussions of concepts.

Bowring, Barbara. "From penury to published poet : the cultural journey of Ann Yearsley." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2018. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/8321/.

Full text
Abstract:
Ann Yearsley (1752-1806) was a humble rural worker who sold milk for a living, but was best known as a poet. Her success in getting a significant amount of work published dismissed the contemporary notion that to be poor and uneducated precluded a life of letters. This thesis examines the constraints and repressions faced by a woman from the lower orders with a will to write. Ann Yearsley’s journey into print is framed in the context of the poet’s effective negotiation through an eighteenth-century society still rooted in gender and class ideology and restraints. This study is distinctive in offering an updated account of an unlikely literary career. This is not a literary study of Yearsley, but offers a nuanced and critical reading of Yearsley’s poetry and correspondence to throw new light on her personal struggle to become a professional writer. This thesis concludes that Ann Yearsley was an important cultural figure in her time because she overcame the difficulties encountered by a female writer from the lower orders. In doing this she showed that a window existed for other women from the laboring classes to become published writers.

Macleod, Catriona, and Simon Howell. "Reflecting on South African psychology: published research, ‘relevance’ and social issues." SAGE Publications Ltd, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1006277.

Full text
Abstract:
As South Africa prepared to host the 30th International Congress of Psychology in 2012, a call was made to reflect on the strengths of and challenges facing contemporary South African Psychology. This paper presents our response to our brief to focus on social issues by presenting the results of a situational analysis of South African Psychology over the last five years and comparing this corpus of data to a similar analysis reported in Macleod (2004). Articles appearing in the South African Journal of Psychology (SAJP) and abstracts in PsycINFO with the keyword ‘South Africa’ over a 5½ year period were analysed. The content of 243 SAJP articles and 1986 PsycINFO abstracts were analysed using the codes developed by Macleod (2004). Results indicate: an increase in the number of articles, a reduction in the percentage of articles using quantitative methodologies and ‘hard’ science theoretical frameworks (particularly in the SAJP), and an increase in qualitative, theoretical, and methodological papers, and papers using systems-oriented theory (particularly in the SAJP). Traditional topics of assessment, stress and psychopathology continue to dominate, with social issues such as housing, land reform, development programmes, water resources and socio-economic inequities being largely ignored. Most research continues to be conducted in Gauteng, KwaZulu/Natal and the Western Cape, predominantly with adult, urban-based, middle-class participants, sourced mainly from universities, hospitals or clinics and schools. Collaborations or comparisons with other African, Asian, South American and Middle East countries have decreased. While the analysis presented in this paper is limited by its exclusion of books, theses, research reports and monographs, it shows that in published research there are some positive trends and some disappointments. The limited number of social issues featuring in published research, the under-representation of certain sectors of the population as participants, and the decrease in collaboration with, or comparison to, countries from the global ‘South’ represent challenges that require systematic attention.

Abstract:
Previous research indicates that the implementation of a new curriculum is affected by several factors, including teachers' orientations toward the role or purpose of curriculum, differences in individual teachers' practices and beliefs, and aspects of the implementation of a published writing program, Being a Writer, in their school district. Data sources included transcripts of interviews with the focal teachers and district administrators, classroom observation field notes of writing instruction, and related documentation including the Being a Writer program. Results indicated that teachers' beliefs about how children learn to write, the district expectations for classroom implementation of curriculum, and the teachers' abilities to describe their own visions or goals for writing instruction all have considerable impact on how the program is implemented and the role the published curriculum plays in the classroom. The implications of my research include the importance of ongoing professional development opportunities for teachers to develop their beliefs about how children learn to write, and the need for teacher education programs to provide experiences that enable future teachers to develop their own goals or visions for students in their classrooms.

Full text
Abstract:
The main objective of this thesis is to formulate a practical aesthetic framework from Giorgio Agamben’s writings, and to use his concepts as an interpretative tool in relation to certain aspects of poetry in contemporary art. The specific category of printed poetry by artists is studied from a meta perspective, looking primarily at the gesture performed by writing poetry as an artist. A selective history of poetry in art looks at Marcel Broodthaers and the Bernadette Corporation, including the ways in which they can clarify the aesthetics of Agamben, followed by a shorter interpretations of three contemporary artist-poets – Karl Larsson, Karl Holmqvist and Hanne Lippard. These works can be defined as a hybrid third with Agamben, not art, but making the absence of art present. Works that are neither poetry nor art but with the availability and potential for both. An aesthetic terminology from Agamben is an aesthetics of privation and potential, of absence and inoperability, as well as an aesthetics of negation and resistance. A framework for looking at the tension between activity and passivity, and the resistance present there. The concept of potentiality also proves to be a fruitful opening for the interpretation of art leaning toward negation or withdrawal.<br>Populärvetenskaplig sammanfattning Uppsatsen undersöker en samling filosofiska begrepp kopplade till konst, hämtade från några av den italienska filosofen Giorgio Agambens böcker.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The aim of this doctoral thesis is to present methods of search, evaluation and analysis of a specific research domain (schizophrenia) from four perspectives: bibliometric analysis of 1) Finnish doctoral theses and 2) Finnish journal articles on schizophrenia, and meta-analysis to determine the prevalence of 3) alcohol use disorders and 4) cannabis use disorders in schizophrenia. Over the years, the number of Finnish articles on schizophrenia has increased, as well as the amount of international collaboration. Bibliometric methods were also found to be feasible in the evaluation of psychiatric research. However, the methods should be used with care. Articles written in collaboration with international organisations seem to receive more citations and are published in journals with higher impact factors, which highlights the importance of developing scientific networks. A considerable proportion (20%) of Finnish scientific schizophrenia articles were published in theses consisting of original papers. The current funding system supports the writing of doctoral thesis consisting of original articles and favours epidemiological and biological research over research into medical treatments. This may affect the research culture in Finland and even slow down the development and improvement of the national treatment system. The reported prevalence of alcohol and cannabis use disorders has differed considerably between studies. No meta-analysis on alcohol or cannabis use disorders in schizophrenia has previously been conducted. In studies (n = 71) on schizophrenia patients, the median prevalence was 15% for current and 26% for lifetime alcohol use disorder, and 16% for current and 27% for lifetime cannabis use disorder. Alcohol use disorders are common in schizophrenia patients, although a declining trend was observed when comparing previous reviews. Cannabis use disorders were found to be more common in younger and first-episode patient samples, as well as in samples with a high proportion of males.

Sinclair, Ross. "Ross Sinclair : 20 years of real life : PhD by published work." Thesis, Glasgow School of Art, 2016. http://radar.gsa.ac.uk/4817/.

Full text
Abstract:
The submission, Ross Sinclair: 20 Years of Real Life consists of seven publications discussed in a critical overview, with three supporting Appendices. Together they document and analyse the diverse outputs of my practice-led research project, Real Life, initiated in 1994. The critical overview argues for the innovative nature of the Real Life Project through its engagement with audiences and demonstrates its contribution to the field of contemporary art practice, across the disciplines of sculpture, painting, performance, installation, critical writing and music. Since the inception of my Real Life project I have explored the agency and impact of the artwork and exhibition in relation to audience exploring new methodologies and in June 2016 was awarded the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Published Work at GSA/GU titled, “20 Years of Real Life”. Here I set the project in critical overview around the philosophical paradigms of Barthes, Baudrillard and de Certeau viewed through a contemporary critical framework of Bourriaud, Bishop and Kester. I argue my project represents a unique and idiosyncratic contribution in its own right to these debates when viewed as a single longitudinal project, unique in recent art context. The impact, influence and contribution of this project is viewed in this submission through the prism of the 5 institutional monographic publications on my work as well as 2 contributions to refereed journals and 3 Appendices describing the project output and published writing, two of these appendices alone exceed 400 pages in length. I will continue to explore this project in the wake of the PhD undertaking further research. I have already had informal discussions with several staff with a view to mentoring/assistance/development of PhD's and am giving a Fine Art Research Seminar on the process of the PhD by Published work and I hope this will lead to more confidence and capability in the School of Fine Art.

Ogden, Rebecca Lee Jensen. "Merit Beyond Any Already Published: Austen and Authorship in the Romantic Age." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2010. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2417.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent decades there have been many attempts to pull Austen into the fold of high Romantic literature. On one level, these thematic comparisons are useful, for Austen has long been anachronistically treated as separate from the Romantic tradition. In the past, her writings have essentially straddled Romantic classification, labeled either as hangers-on in the satiric eighteenth-century literary tradition or as early artifacts of a kind of proto-Victorianism. To a large extent, scholars have described Austen as a writer departing from, rather than embracing, the literary trends of the Romantic era. Yet, while recent publications depicting a “Romantic Austen” yield impressive insights into the timeliness of her fiction, they haven't fully addressed Austen's participation in some of the most crucial literary debates of her time. Thus, it is my intention in this essay to extend the discussion of Austen as a Romantic to her participation in Romantic-era debates over emergent literary categories of authorship and realism. I argue that we can best contextualize Austen by examining how her model of authorship differs from those that surfaced in literary conversations of the time, particularly those relating to the high Romantic myth of the solitary genius. Likewise, as questions of solitary authorship often overlap with discussions of realism and romance in literature, it is important to reexamine how Austen responds to these categories, particularly in the context of a strictly Romantic engagement with these terms. I find that, though Austen's writing has long been implicated in the emergence of realism in literature, little has been written to link this impulse to the earlier emergence of Romantic-era categories of authorship and literary creativity. I contend that Austen's self-projection (as both an author and realist) engages with Romantic-era literary debates over these categories; likewise, I argue that her response to these emergent concerns is more complex and nuanced than has heretofore been accounted for in literary scholarship.

Hagiwara, Asami. "Guide to the published solo piano music of Jean Sibelius (1865–1957)." Diss., University of Iowa, 2017. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/6123.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to provide a guide to the published solo piano works of Jean Sibelius (1865–1957). Sibelius wrote more than 150 compositions for piano; yet, these are little known and are rarely performed. Through this project, Sibelius’s solo piano literature, currently unknown to many pianists and piano teachers, will become more accessible. The first chapter will provide biographical information about Sibelius, the second chapter will deal with the compositional style and historical background of his piano works, and the third chapter will be the guide to his published works for solo piano. The guide of each piece will include a brief stylistic overview, available publications, the length, the key, and leveling suggestions based on Maurice Hinson’s grading system from Guide to the Pianist’s Repertoire. This essay serves the purpose of encouraging the study, practice, and performance of the solo piano works by Sibelius. Although his piano compositions follow the tradition of 19th-century Romanticism especially that of Chopin, Liszt, and Brahms, the influence of Finnish folk traditions makes his music distinctive from other Romantic composers. This guide will provide pianists and piano teachers access to important information regarding each of his pieces.
