Abstract:
In this paper, we present a logical analysis of the graphical elements used to structure the earliest Sinhala newspaper front page layouts. Furthermore, a hierarchical structure is proposed logically to represent the structure of the front page layout of the earliest Sinhala newspapers. In addition, to improve the aesthetics of the entire design, hierarchy makes it easier to convey both primary and secondary information printed on a structured document that is composed of elements. A hierarchical level represents the structure of a newspaper's front page. Graphical elements help to develop the visual structure of a newspaper front page. Identification and analysis of graphical elements are performed by visual analysis. The approach is a top-down method, and based on domain knowledge, the front pages of the earliest Sinhala newspapers were analysed. The researcher tries to find the answer to the statement, whether the earliest Sinhala newspaper front pages also follow the same logical hierarchical structure as presented for the printed forms.

A content analysis of six daily Minnesota newspapers shows that the type of wildlife stories published depends on whether the newspaper is in an urban or rural setting and on whether the story is on the news or “outdoor” pages. Stories about wildlife conflicts are more common in urban than rural news pages, but neither type of newspaper publishes much about conflict in its outdoor pages. All newspapers relied heavily on bureaucratic sources.

Abstract:
T. Smykovskaya writes about a unique episode of Russian literary history: the development of so-called ‘labour-camp literature’, more specifically, lyrical poetry, published in the camps’ newspapers. The article focuses on BAMlag’s principal paper Stroitel BAMa, which saw publications of works by A. Alving, P. Florensky, A. Tsvetaeva, and other detainees. In her examination of the material, which so far has provoked little to no scholarly interest, the author highlights the key themes, images and subjects of labour-camp literature. Essentially, the article attempts to focus on the yet unknown history of the newspaper Stroitel BAMa, the main printed medium of BAMlag, as well as to describe the paper’s artistic and journalistic paradigm, which defined the literary activities of Svobodlag for a decade. Therefore, the article covers the newspaper’s history from the 1933 competition for its name until the emergence of the poetry section in the mid-1930s; from the Stakhanov theme, omnipresent in ‘free’ and labour-camp poetry alike in 1936, until eulogy of the Soviet leaders in pre-war years.

Kozlov, Ilia V. "Literary Works in the Ural Newspaper (1897–1908): Editorial Policy and Genre-Thematic Features." Izvestia of the Ural federal university. Series 2. Humanities and Arts 24, no. 1 (2022): 193–209. http://dx.doi.org/10.15826/izv2.2022.24.1.013.

Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to define the artistic and extraliterary features of the literary section of one of the first and most significant private newspapers of Ural Region at the turn of the twentieth century. The conclusions of the article are based on the genre attribution of works published in the newspaper (a poetic legend, feuilleton, soldier’s tale), the correlation of these works with the sociocultural and geographical contexts, and the peculiarities of the authors’ biographies. The article notes an attempt to correlate heterogeneous phenomena in the literary section made by the editorial board of the newspaper. It is important because of the peculiarities of the newspaper’s circulation at that time and the awareness of the geographical position of the Urals as a “middle” region. In the newspaper, there are themes, plots, genres of works of Western European literature and the East, the fate of authors, actively moving to the east (Siberia, the Far East) and to the west, newspaper, and literary texts proper. The editorial policy for Ural was formed along the lines of the coexistence of different esthetic and political views. This was due to the extraliterary peculiarities of the newspaper’s circulation at the turn of the century and the need to attract the attention of readers by any means to provide financial success. In the study, the author applies the genre and motif analysis of literary works. The conclusions are based on a wide literary and illustrative material of the Ural newspaper and other newspapers of Ural Region, the memoirs of contemporaries, and archival materials. The characteristic features of literary critical materials published in the Ural newspaper confirm the features of the editorial policy indicated: an appeal to contemporary authors and authors of the past and to works whose authors had different aesthetic views. As a result, the author of the article concludes about the medial position of the literary department of the Ural newspaper, uniting literary works that are diametrically opposed in sociocultural, aesthetic, and geographical terms.

Abstract:
Although Istanbul is the heart of the Ottoman press, İzmir is an important city for the Ottoman society to meet the "newspaper" phenomenon. The Turkish press in İzmir, where the press in foreign languages developed, started with the Aydın newspaper published in 1869. Aydın newspaper, which has the status of an official newspaper, was followed by the Devir newspaper published in 1872. The third Turkish newspaper published in İzmir, after Aydın and Devir newspapers is İntibah. Limited information is available about this newspaper, as no copies of it have survived. İntibah newspaper ordered new typeface and tools in order to eliminate the printing errors it experienced due to the typeface. In order not to leave the readers without a newspaper in the required time for the ordered material to reach İzmir, it decides to publish a copy named İlâve-i İntibah, printed with lithography. However, this initiative is not accepted by the official authorities. This study focuses on the copy named İlâve-i İntibah published by İntibah newspaper. The study aims to reveal that the İlâve-i İntibah copy is a humor magazine in terms of content and within this context, İzmir is the second Turkish humor magazine published after Kara Sinan, the first Turkish humor magazine. It is thought that the study will make a significant contribution to the literature on Turkish Press History, especially İzmir Press History.

Abstract:
This paper provides a historical overview of German newspapers published in Osijek. In the period between the liberation from the Turks and the end of World War Two, almost half of Osijek’s population were Germans, which enabled them to play a significant role in all aspects of city life, and newspaper publishing was no exception. A review of German newspapers published in Osijek revealed that they differed in content, publication frequency and longevity. After reading and reviewing both scholarly and scientific literature, it was concluded that most facts about the newspapers were not completely, but partially preserved in a non-chronological order. Newspaper publishers operated in difficult circumstances and frequently changed editors and owners. However, today, we can claim, that German newspapers published in Osijek were vital, diverse in form and important to (educated) readers and their needs and habits. The newspapers were similar to magazines and covered all facets of life, including politics, science, economy, art and culture. Such newspapers covered everything their readership might find interesting, and many Croats contributed to those German newspapers as associates. This paper is based on the review of research and scholarly and scientific papers. The intention was to follow the logical and chronological structure of German newspapers.

Alshehri, Fayez A. "Electronic newspapers on the Internet : a study of the production and consumption of Arab dailies on the World Wide Web." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2001. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/3503/.

Full text
Abstract:
With the spread of the Internet in the Arab world, many Arab publishers and governments' media bodies have begun to utilise websites in their outreach programmes. This thesis examines the subject of Arab e-newspapers on the Internet. Specifically, it focuses on readers of these publications and explores their use of this new news medium and their overall satisfaction with it. To supplement this analysis, data were also collected from e-newspaper publishers about their practices and about the content of their Internet news services. The methodology included online surveys of readers and publishers, content and format analysis of newspapers' websites, and face-to-face interviews with some Arab journalists. The research was restricted to Internet daily publications published by Arab publishers in Arabic and English, though its results may have wider implications. It was also restricted temporally to a specific time period, meaning that events in this rapidly changing new technology environment may quickly overtake the situation as elucidated in this work. In this respect, the findings do not reflect the impact of the new browsers that were introduced in late 1999, such as Microsoft's multi-language browser (Internet Explorer version 5), which will revolutionise the way people, read Internet content. The most important trend that has been identified is the major move of existing Arab printed newspapers towards online publishing in most Arab countries. Some of them just present part of their printed product (a selection of the daily content), others offer all of their content but, in most cases they appear in the same optical format as in the printed version. Yet, despite the urgency to get on the Internet, the findings reveal that most publishers did not have clear online publishing strategies and most of them were unaware of the seriousness of the Internet to their traditional business. This study revealed that the demographic profile of Arab e-newspapers' readers was similar, in many ways, to readership profiles found for Internet users in the non-Arab World, in terms of age, occupation and level of education. The keys to reader loyalty and satisfaction are found in the ease with which online news can be accessed and explored, and the extent to which it is updated.

Abstract:
The primary aim of this thesis is to contribute to ongoing historical research into migration to and settlement in Australia by Scots. It achieves this by identifying and examining letters sent from the colonies in New South Wales which were printed in historic Scottish newspapers between 1820 and 1850. In examining the material, this thesis argues that the letters had potential to influence emigration decisions by Scots. The study shows some of the ways in which New South Wales was reported in the Scottish press and compares those reports with conditions in Scotland at the time. The comparisons and analyses of the letters, with consideration of their authors and likely readers as well as the newspapers in which they were printed demonstrate that the letters did have potential to influence emigration decisions. Its particular contribution to knowledge arises from demonstrating how mostly private letters which became publicly available through publication in newspapers had potential to influence emigrants’ decisions about moving to Australia. Rather than claiming direct evidence of the publication of particular letters as having influenced emigration, it shows how reporting of conditions in Australia when set into a context of contemporary events and conditions in Scotland had potential to influence decisions. It is grounded in the body of historical research about colonial Australia and sits within this Australian historiographical context. Given the motivations and attractions of Scots to colonial Australia this thesis also engages with techniques and theoretical approaches associated with Scottish diaspora studies, an area of research that often emphasises other Scottish migration patterns to Canada, New Zealand and the USA. When considered together both of these historiographical approaches lend themselves to primary source material analysis and a methodological approach that this doctoral study uses to examine the motivations of Scots who migrated to colonial Australia.<br>Doctor of Philosophy

Abstract:
During 2019, it became increasingly popular for countries to declare a climate emergency – often on demand of their citizens. As such, the term ‘climate emergency’ had a significant increase in usage and got dubbed the Word of the Year 2019. In an effort to investigate discourses around ‘climate emergency’, I used a combination of corpus linguistics and discourse analysis with framing theory, as used in ecolinguistics, and compared with ‘climate change’; the UK parliamentary climate emergency declaration was used as the point of comparison. I compiled a corpus of almost 100,000 words (consisting of news articles) for each term in the time period Jan-Aug 2019 (four months before and after the declaration). The results showed that there were three overlapping frames (politics, problem, threat) – as well as three unique frames for ‘climate change’ (war, cause, predicament). There were no differences in what frames occurred before and after the climate emergency declaration, but there were differences in the words included in the frames – both in terms of frequency and what words were used.

Abstract:
The aim of this chapter is to investigate how racio-national discourse influences the way migrants perceive themselves and frame their trajectories in the host community. Within a CDA framework, we analyze an article written by a young migrant and published in a Greek newspaper of leftwing and antiracist orientation. The article appears to belong to the genre of public apologies, since the author projects migrants as offenders who harmed the victimized majority. We argue that such representation of reality indicates migrants’ internalized racism and simultaneously renders the article an instance of liquid racism, as it is published in a newspaper of antiracist orientation. Through migrants’ reproduction of majority’s racist accusations against them, the hegemony of Greek racio-national discourse is reinforced.

Abstract:
AbstractIndonesian multilingualism has been affected by outside factors including colonialism and globalization. During the Dutch colonial period in the early 1900s, Indonesian intellectuals wrote mainly in Dutch, and occasionally English and other regional languages. A hybrid identity was embraced as these speakers moved from one language to another in their speech. This study seeks to examine the manner in which a multilingual writer constructs his self-identity while expressing his opinions through newspaper columns, as well as the influence of colonialism on the writer’s self-identification. Using qualitative analysis of textual data taken from Indonesian newspapers published in the 1930s and 1970s, this study demonstrates that the multilingual writer recognized his hybrid self-identity since he could utilize a different language in different contexts. A hybrid identity was developed by the multilingual writer when he created a meaning-making system, shaped experience, and acquired understanding or knowledge using various languages in his repertoire. Despite the different identities, he remained loyal to one primary identity.

Chapter 4, “The Newspaper,” which parallels the previous chapter, examines what the newspaper would be like in the ideal future. Many utopian novelists were journalists themselves and used their fiction to project what the newspaper could be like. They grumbled about its disposability, frustrated that the hard work of journalists was read one day and tossed the next. In utopia, the newspaper would be published in a booklet format, which would make it easy to preserve. In addition, advertisements and special interests would have no sway on the newspapers of the future. Some foresaw journalists as professionals in utopia, while others thought they should remain amateurs. In addition, some utopian novelists projected alternative news media, foreseeing technology that anticipated television and the internet.

Abstract:
"This article examines the organizational phase of the National Struggle in Thrace as a local history study on the scale of Edirne through the newspapers Ahali and Temin. While studies on the Thracian press during the National Struggle have focused on the Trakya Pasaeli newspaper (Şanlı: 2021) and the Sofia editions of the Ahali newspaper (Vatansever-Sannav: 2016), (Doğruöz: 2013), a comparative study on the Ahali and Temin newspapers published in Edirne has not been conducted so far. The most important reason for this is the limited number of copies of both newspapers in libraries and archives. In this study, in addition to the 4 issues of Ahali newspaper published in Edirne and included in the catalogs, the issues numbered 22 and 37 in my personal library are included, and in addition to the only issue of Temin newspaper in the catalogs, the missing-page issue numbered 264 in my personal library is included. The stance of both newspapers during the National Struggle, their staff of writers, the subjects they covered, and their connections with the local and central administration are within the scope of this study."

Abstract:
The article analyzes the publications of I.A. Bunin in the Paris newspaper “Vozrozhdenie” (Renaissance) in 1925–1927. Bunin published in the “Vozrozhdenie” articles, essays, poems and stories. The most important role in the history of the newspaper was played by the publication of Bunin’s “Okayanny Dni”. If fictional elements may be fixed in the book edition of “Okayanny Dni”, then in the newspaper edition of “Renaissance” it is important both for Bunin and for the newspaper’s editorial office to install on documentary character of Bunin’s “diary”. Bunin’s “Okayanny Dni” and essays are considered in the article in the context of the newspaper policy. Among the stories and poems published in 1925–1927 new versions of pre-revolutionary works prevail. At the same time, it was on the pages of the “Vozrozhdenie” that Bunin’s famous stories such as “Ida” and “Notre-dame de la Garde” were first published.

The chapter narrates the context Fawwaz entered in Egypt, the final third of the nineteenth century, a time of nationalist ferment before and in the wake of the British occupation (1882). It focuses on the little-studied figure of Hasan Husni al-Tuwayrani, who published many of Fawwaz’s essays in his newspaper al-Nil. The chapter considers the gender politics of al-Nil and the more prominent newspapers al-Mu’ayyad and Lisan al-hal in which Fawwaz also published, asking why she might have chosen to publish a majority of her essays in al-Nil, in the period 1892‒4. One likely factor was al-Tuwayrani’s adherence to the long-attested, rule-governed debate genre of munazara, explored here. The chapter also considers the reception through newspaper announcements of Fawwaz’s writings.

In 1906, Мikhail Prishvin started publishing in newspapers "Birzhevye vedomosti," "Rech," "Russkie vedomosti," "Utro Rossii," and so on. Нe planned to introduce part of these materials into the book about the revolution, "Tsvet i krest." The history of Prishvin's work in the newspaper "Rech" significantly complements the little-studied history of his interaction with different pre-revolutionary periodical publications. Prishvin's diary entries allow us to reconstruct the pattern of his collaboration with this newspaper. Prisvin's letters to I.V. Gessen (stored in RGALI) give valuable information about this. From these letters, we can find out some work's destiny, Prishvin's creative concepts, conditions of collaboration with the newspaper, problems with censorship, etc. View de visu of the annual set of the newspapers allowed to reveal texts belonging to Prishvin. The news- paper "Rech" published his stories, a series of essays "Na bratskyiu liniiy" and "Otzvuki voyni," a series of feuilletons "Dela i sluchai."

Abstract:
One hundred years after the death and one hundred and forty years after the birth of the famous Czech writer Jaroslav Hašek (1883–1923), his work still attracts the undivided attention and curiosity of readers. His widely known literary work about the immortal soldier Josef Švejk, which has been translated into many languages, has acquired the dimension of omnipresence and timelessness – precisely in the sense that it can be read in any country and at any time. However, the majority of the writer's prose work consists of short stories, adventures and tales, often published first in newspapers and then in book form, often linked by a common theme that they deal with. Many of them preceded the writing of the novel about the good soldier Švejk, and some of them explain Hašek's political thinking and the constant need to question things, make fun of them and take nothing for granted. Hašek's constant involvement in public social life can be traced in the stories collected in anthological collections – Galerie karikatur (1909), Velitelem města Bugulmy (1921), Mírová konference a jiné humoresky (1922), Dobrý voják Švejk před válkou a jiné podivné historky (1922), as well as in the posthumously published anthology – Politické a sociální dějiny strany mírného pokroku v mezích zákona (1963). Our intention in this contribution was to highlight selected parodies and political satire in the short form of a story, with reference to the parallel between Dickens' heroes from The Pickwick Papers and Hašek's satire – Klub českých Pickwicků.

Abstract:
The paper aims at presenting the personality of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, his role in the Turkish War of Independence, and the foundation of the Turkish Republic as reflected in the covering of the contemporary serial publications in the newly established Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Atatürk's reforms and his personal political rise were followed by the Yugoslav press firstly with caution, then with enthusiasm, reaching its pinnacle during the non-official visit of the king Aleksandar and queen Marija to Istanbul in October 1933. The Kingdom of Yugoslavia was an autocratic state, and it will not be wrong to assume that the views expressed in the capital's newspapers were not only reflecting the official state policy, but were very probably also composed according to the king's personally dictated lines. The both heads of states, leaving the First World War as high military officers fighting on the opposed sides in the war, although not directly confronted, seem to have passed a long road from suspicion to sympathy, and, if judging by the press reports on the Istanbul visit, even friendship. The main sources for the research are contemporary daily press and monthly journals, published in Belgrade between 1919 and 1939.

Abstract:
The paper presents an ongoing doctoral project dedicated to periodically published lists in historical newspapers between 1600 and 1850. By employing approaches from Corpus Linguistics and Digital Humanities, the project aims to locate the studied ‘small’ texts within existing digital resources, analyse them with regard to their textual characteristics and evaluate their potentials and challenges for automated information extraction. The article primarily focuses on two key aspects: firstly, on search strategies for locating lists in digital newspaper corpora and collections, and secondly, on a case study into lists of arriving persons published in the Wien[n]erisches Diarium between 1703 and 1725. These empirical investigations reveal that periodically published lists form a central and frequent component of early modern newspapers and offer numerous potentials for Digital Humanities research due to their textual features, such as periodicity, repetitiveness or inherent (semi-)structuredness. In this regard, the paper identifies the overlooked newspaper text type as a data treasure awaiting discovery and underscores the need to investigate ‘small’ newspaper texts on a large scale.

Abstract:
Electronic publishing has a particularly significant application as a graphic product in the publication of some products such as books and newspapers that have traditionally been essential products of newspaper printing, book printing and the like. In the electronic publication of newspapers, there are certain templates that are related to the identity of the publisher. There is a number of published and printed editions of newspapers that were published before the introduction of electronic editions. Newspapers stick to tradition and try to transfer printed editions to electronic ones, that is, to do the so-called digitalization. The process of digitization is a complex and extensive work consisting of analysis and proper preparation of the transformation into a bit of a mapped image with the help of reproduction devices, rearranging and arranging data with OCR software, creating metadata, database management and web application development. As current products of graphic production, multimedia appears as a set of different media that affect the human senses. Procedures for digitalization of graphic products with essential elements are necessary, and various software tools are needed for the realization of the process. This paper points out the most important segments of previously mentioned procedures.

Abstract:
Reşat Nuri Güntekin, one of the leading writers of Turkish literature in the Republican Period, contributed to Turkish literature with novels, stories, plays, travel writings and articles. The writer, who lived between 1889-1956, served as a teacher, inspector, deputy and French National Education Attaché and a member of the Unesco board of directors. Continuing his literary activities such as Diken, Kelebek, Güleryüz, İnci, Akbaba, Büyük Mecmua, Yedigün, Zaman, Ulus, Vakit, Memleket in magazines and newspapers, the author publishes his novels and stories, as well as criticism and travel articles. Güntekin's writings, which included his observations during the years he was an inspector in Anatolia, were published in 1936 under the name Anadolu Notes. Since 1947, Reşat Nuri Güntekin began to publish his impressions in Paris, where he went on duty, in a series in his own newspaper, Memleket. This series consists of 15 writings under the heading Passenger Notes and Passenger Book. Güntekin, who tells about the troubles he experienced during the journey in the first series, writes his impressions of Paris under the heading of the Passenger Book. These writings, which started on May 14, 1947 and ended on June 29, 1947, are 11 in number. In these writings, taxis and porters in Paris, subways, trade and black market in the subway, food and beverage issues in Paris, restaurants are emphasized. The writings, in which sections from the daily life of Paris and the hustle and bustle of people are conveyed, are important in that they contain the observations of a Turkish writer about Paris life in the 1940s. These articles written by Reşat Nuri Güntekin in series in the Memleket newspaper have not been published in a book before and have not been talked about much. In this paper, the content of Reşat Nuri Güntekin's writings about his travel to Paris and his impressions during his stay will be emphasized.

"Autoethnography of the Cultural Competence Exhibited at an African American Weekly Newspaper Organization." In InSITE 2019: Informing Science + IT Education Conferences: Jerusalem. Informing Science Institute, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.28945/4187.

Full text
Abstract:
[This Proceedings paper was revised and published in the 2019 issue of the journal Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology, Volume 16] Aim/Purpose: Little is known of the cultural competence or leadership styles of a minority owned newspaper. This autoethnography serves to benchmark one early 1990s example. Background: I focused on a series of flashbacks to observe an African American weekly newspaper editor-in-chief for whom I reported to 25 years ago. In my reflections I sought to answer these questions: How do minorities in entrepreneurial organizations view their own identity, their cultural competence? What degree of this perception is conveyed fairly and equitably in the community they serve? Methodology: Autoethnography using both flashbacks and article artifacts applied to the leadership of an early 1990s African American weekly newspaper. Contribution: Since a literature gap of minority newspaper cultural competence examples is apparent, this observation can serve as a benchmark to springboard off older studies like that of Barbarin (1978) and that by examining the leadership styles and editorial authenticity as noted by The Chicago School of Media Theory (2018), these results can be used for comparison to other such minority owned publications. Findings: By bringing people together, mixing them up, and conducting business any other way than routine helped the Afro-American Gazette, Grand Rapids, proudly display a confidence sense of cultural competence. The result was a potentiating leadership style, and this style positively changed the perception of culture, a social theory change example. Recommendations for Practitioners: For the minority leaders of such publications, this example demonstrates effective use of potentiating leadership to positively change the perception of the quality of such minority owned newspapers. Recommendations for Researchers: Such an autoethnography could be used by others to help document other examples of cultural competence in other minority owned newspapers. Impact on Society: The overall impact shows that leadership at such minority owned publications can influence the community into a positive social change example. Future Research: Research in the areas of culture competence, leadership, within minority owned newspapers as well as other minority alternative publications and websites can be observed with a focus on what works right as well as examples that might show little social change model influence. The suggestion is to conduct the research while employed if possible, instead of relying on flashbacks.

Abstract:
China has vigorously developed nuclear power in the past several years whereas the nuclear power expansion has met with considerable objections, principally due to low widespread public support. News media frames can influence public perception. We conducted content analysis of articles related to nuclear power in the People’s Daily from 2004 to 2013. Analysis results showed that articles in the newspaper mainly reflected pro-nuclear or balanced arguments whereas little anti-nuclear opinion was published. Pro-nuclear arguments most often presented environmental benefits and stakeholder support, and informational text primarily reflected nuclear power information, nuclear technology, and regulatory processes. The results of content analysis of the newspaper are highly consistent with the Chinese government’s pro-nuclear decision.

Abstract:
The article considers the history, thematic range of expression and a number of authors and publicists of the newspaper «Christian Voice» (with the frequency of a fortnightly). It has been published in Munich by nationally conscious groups of migrants since 1949 as a part of the «Ukrainian Christian Publishing House». The significance of this Ukrainian newspaper in post-Nazi Germany is only partly comprehended in the works of a number of diaspora press’s researchers. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to supplement the scientific information about the «Christian Voice» in the postwar period, in particular, the yearbook for 1957 was chosen as the principal subject of analysis. In the process of writing the article, we used such methods: analysis, synthesis, content analysis, generalization and others. Thus, the results of our study became the socio-political and religious context in which the «Christian Voice» was founded. The article is also a concise overview of the titles of Ukrainian magazines in post-Nazi Germany in the 1940s and 1950s. The thematic analysis of publications of 1957 showed the main trends of journalistic texts in the newspaper and the journalistic skills of it’s iconic authors and publicists (D. Buchynsky, M. Bradovych, S. Shah, etc.). The thematic range of the newspaper after 1959 was somewhat narrowed due to the change in the status of the «Christian Voice» when it became the official newspaper of the UGCC in Germany. It has been distinguished two main thematic blocks of the newspaper ‒ social and religious. Historians will find interesting factual material from the newspaper publications about the life of Ukrainians in the diaspora. Historians of journalism can supplement the bibliographic apparatus in the journalistic and publicistic works of the authors in the postwar period of the newspaper and in subsequent years of publishing. Based upon the publications of the «Christian Voice» in different years, not only since 1957, journalists can study the contents and a form of different genres, linguistic peculiarities in the newspaper articles, and so on.

Full text
Abstract:
Ever since Spain became an immigration country, unaccompanied foreign minors – often referred to by the acronym ‘menas’– have become the subject of media coverage. This study departs from the premise that the media constructs reality. Media representations of migrants must therefore be examined to uncover their impact in the social world. This research analyses representations of unaccompanied foreign minors in the press editorials published between 2018 and 2022. Frame analysis informs the theoretical framework of this thesis and it is applied through the constant comparative technique. This work uncovers seven different frames. Whereas the victim/threat dichotomy is the most prevalent throughout the newspapers, positive representations are also found. While newspapers within the liberalconservative political spectrum frame unaccompanied minors in both positive and negative ways, this is not the case for the far-right and left-wing newspapers. The analysis also finds changes in framing according to decisive political events.

Full text
Abstract:
The article examines modern media texts in the field of political journalism; the role of information narratives and emotional markers in media doctrine is clarified; verbal expression of rational meanings in the articles of famous Ukrainian analysts is shown. Popular theories of emotions in the process of cognition are considered, their relationship with the author’s personality, reader psychology and gonzo journalism is shown. Since the media text, in contrast to the text, is a product of social communication, the main narrative is information with the intention of influencing public opinion. Media text implies the presence of the author as a creator of meanings. In addition, media texts have universal features: word, sound, visuality (stills, photos, videos). They are traditionally divided into radio, TV, newspaper and Internet texts. The concepts of multimedia and hypertext are related to online texts. Web combinations, especially in political journalism, have intensified the interactive branching of nonlinear texts that cannot be published in traditional media. The Internet as a medium has created the conditions for the exchange of ideas in the most emotional way. Hence Gonzo’s interest in journalism, which expresses impressions of certain events in words and epithets, regardless of their stylistic affiliation. There are many such examples on social media in connection with the events surrounding the Wagnerians, the Poroshenko case, Russia’s new aggression against Ukraine, and others. Thus, the study of new features of media text in the context of modern political narratives and emotional markers is important in media research. The article focuses review of etymology, origin and features of using lexemes “cмисл (meaning)” and “сенс (sense)” in linguistic practice of Ukrainians results in the development of meanings and functional stylistic coloring in the usage of these units. Lexemes “cмисл (meaning)” and “сенс (sense)” are used as synonyms, but there are specific fields of meanings where they cannot be interchanged: lexeme “сенс (sense)” should be used when it comes to reasonable grounds for something, lexeme “cмисл (meaning)” should be used when it comes to notion, concept, understanding. Modern political texts are most prominent in genres such as interviews with politicians, political commentaries, analytical articles by media experts and journalists, political reviews, political portraits, political talk shows, and conversations about recent events, accompanied by effective emotional narratives. Etymologically, the concept of “narrative” is associated with the Latin adjective “gnarus” – expert. Speakers, philosophers, and literary critics considered narrative an “example of the human mind.” In modern media texts it is not only “story”, “explanation”, “message techniques”, “chronological reproduction of events”, but first of all the semantic load and what subjective meanings the author voices; it is a process of logical presentation of arguments (narration). The highly professional narrator uses narration as a “method of organizing discourse” around facts and impressions, impresses with his political erudition, extraordinary intelligence and creativity. Some of the above theses are reflected in the following illustrations from the Ukrainian media: “Culture outside politics” – a pro-Russian narrative…” (MP Gabibullayeva); “The next will be Russia – in the post-Soviet space is the Arab Spring…” (journalist Vitaly Portnikov); “In Russia, only the collapse of Ukraine will be perceived as success” (Pavel Klimkin); “Our army is fighting, hiding from the leadership” (Yuri Butusov).

While studying the materials published in the “Opinión” section on the websites of such Spanish newspapers as La Razón, 20 minutos, El Periódico, El País, El Diario, El Correo, El Mundo, ABC and La Vanguardia from February to October 2022, the main attention was paid to narratives, which are related to the war in Ukraine and which are shaping public opinion about it in Spanish society. The methods used in the article include content analysys, comparative analysis and generalization. The publications were selected by searching the keywords “Ucrania”, and phrases “La Guerra en Ucrania”, “La Guerra en Europa” in the column “Opinión”. By using the methods of comparative analysys and generalization we outlined the main narratives and general trends of coverage of the full-scale war in Ukraine in Spanish newspapers. Conclusions of the research: almostly in all newspapers there is the presence of double standards when neutral, pro-Ukrainian and pro-Russian narratives intersect with each other. We found out that combination of these narratives sometimes can be traced not only in a certain edition, but also in a single journalistic text. The research is relevant because the war in Ukraine is still going on. War, which is not only on the battlefield, but also in the information front still continuing. So, it’s important to know which media are spreading pro-russian narratives and which media conversely are supporting Ukraine. The study could help Ukrainian government to understand the features of these narratives and to form the main principles of international information policy in order to resist the pro-russian ideas in the world press. Keywords: Spanish media, La Razón; 20 minutos; El Periódico; El País; El Diario; El Correo; El Mundo; ABC; La Vanguardia; full-scale invasion, war in Ukraine, Ukrainian question, image of Ukraine.

Silva E Souza, Cibele. Convergence between Corruption and the Coronavirus Pandemic in Brazil. Külügyi és Külgazdasági Intézet, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.47683/kkielemzesek.e-2020.96.

Abstract:
In the context of the global pandemic, news platforms have started to play a fundamental role in Brazilian politics. It is in the communication environment that political disputes develop, placing the media in the focus of political disputes for their ability to destroy career policies or conversely, to enhance the democratic development of a country. Therefore, the present work provides a narrative framework for corruption in Brazilian news portals during the first months of the Covid-19 pandemic. The empirical analysis is based on the content analysis of texts published in May in Brazilian newspapers. The objective of the research is to observe how the political dialogue on corruption and the pandemic was translated in the media at a time of crisis in various sectors of the country. It is observed that in this context corruption intersected with the pandemic narrative, displaying three narrative tendencies: as a contributor to government instability, as a way to reinforce the country’s crisis, and as a way to increase the perception of corruption.

Carvalho Badaró de Melo, Bruna. South-south migration : A Critical Discourse Analysis of media’s construction of Venezuelan refugees in Brazil. Malmö universitet, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.24834/isbn.9789178773824.

Full text
Abstract:
This article explores how Venezuelan refugees have been constructed by the Brazilian media during the ongoing refugee crisis in South America. The fact that South-South migration has so far been understudied and the relevant and fast-escalating displacement of people from Venezuela were the motivations for this study. Twenty-one articles about Venezuelan refugees published between 2016 and 2021 by three mainstream, conservative newspapers were analyzed. The theoretical framework consisted of Fairclough’s three-dimensional model of Critical Discourse Analysis and the theoretical concepts of stereotypes and otherness, from a decolonial perspective. The findings revealed that Venezuelans were mainly associated with negative aspects, comprehending two sub discourses: in the first one, they were constructed as the origin of diseases at the borders and associated with violence and societal tension, and in the second one they were constructed as exploited, underemployed and poorly integrated into the formal labor market. The findings contribute to increasing the understanding of the South-South migration phenomena by detailing the representation of Venezuelan refugees in the Brazilian media and the main discourses related to them.

Golovko, Khrystyna. TRAVEL REPORT BY ALEKSANDER JANTA-POŁCZYNSKI «INTO THE USSR» (1932): FROG PERSPECTIVE. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.50.11091.

Abstract:
The article analyzes a series of materials by Aleksander Janta-Polczynski «Into the USSR» from Soviet Russia during the in 1932, published on «Wiadomości Literackiе». The purpose of this article is explain the uniqueness of the reporter’s style and personality. We want to emphasize the role of Janta-Polczynski as the pioneer of reportage journalism. He was the first who worked professionally in this position in the full sense of this word. Analyzed the cycle of Alexander Janta-Polczynski from Russia, we can emphasize the scale of the reporter’s trip: in 1932 the journalist made the largest journalistic trip to the USSR. Janta visited the Eastern republics, which differed from the popular Moscow and Leningrad. Also, he saw the largest construction in the USSR at this time – which it bragged about russian newspapers – Magnitogorsk and Dneprostroy. For a better understanding are given the visual examples from reportorial texts. It should be noted that for Janta the main task of the reporter is to show what is seen and recorded: only facts and personal experience in communication. This cycle can safely be called a journey and social expedition. The main task for Janta the scene where the reportage takes place is to find proper characters and convince them of the importance of their story. These are the materials of a reporter – an eyewitness, not a researcher, a report from the scene, which pushes the reader to an independent conclusion. We explore that all the Janta-Polczynski texts are inextricably linked by looking into the «middle» of the process: the diversity of what is seen allows the journalist to look for differences and similarities, compare, look at the fundamental components, track changes and distinguish them. Special attention was paid to a low-angle shot in his materials. He describes how Soviet society lives, how factories work, how the system of educating a Soviet person, goes to the movies and exhibitions, communicates with ordinary citizens. Undoubtedly, all this is successfully complemented by the factual detail and uniqueness of the author’s style.
