Alshehri, Fayez A. "Electronic newspapers on the Internet : a study of the production and consumption of Arab dailies on the World Wide Web." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2001. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/3503/.

Abstract:
With the spread of the Internet in the Arab world, many Arab publishers and governments' media bodies have begun to utilise websites in their outreach programmes. This thesis examines the subject of Arab e-newspapers on the Internet. Specifically, it focuses on readers of these publications and explores their use of this new news medium and their overall satisfaction with it. To supplement this analysis, data were also collected from e-newspaper publishers about their practices and about the content of their Internet news services. The methodology included online surveys of readers and publishers, content and format analysis of newspapers' websites, and face-to-face interviews with some Arab journalists. The research was restricted to Internet daily publications published by Arab publishers in Arabic and English, though its results may have wider implications. It was also restricted temporally to a specific time period, meaning that events in this rapidly changing new technology environment may quickly overtake the situation as elucidated in this work. In this respect, the findings do not reflect the impact of the new browsers that were introduced in late 1999, such as Microsoft's multi-language browser (Internet Explorer version 5), which will revolutionise the way people, read Internet content. The most important trend that has been identified is the major move of existing Arab printed newspapers towards online publishing in most Arab countries. Some of them just present part of their printed product (a selection of the daily content), others offer all of their content but, in most cases they appear in the same optical format as in the printed version. Yet, despite the urgency to get on the Internet, the findings reveal that most publishers did not have clear online publishing strategies and most of them were unaware of the seriousness of the Internet to their traditional business. This study revealed that the demographic profile of Arab e-newspapers' readers was similar, in many ways, to readership profiles found for Internet users in the non-Arab World, in terms of age, occupation and level of education. The keys to reader loyalty and satisfaction are found in the ease with which online news can be accessed and explored, and the extent to which it is updated.

Hannaford, Graham. "A good sheep run. Letters from New South Wales in Scottish newspapers between 1820 and 1850 with potential to influence decisions on emigration." Thesis, Federation University Australia, 2020. http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/HandleResolver/1959.17/174359.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary aim of this thesis is to contribute to ongoing historical research into migration to and settlement in Australia by Scots. It achieves this by identifying and examining letters sent from the colonies in New South Wales which were printed in historic Scottish newspapers between 1820 and 1850. In examining the material, this thesis argues that the letters had potential to influence emigration decisions by Scots. The study shows some of the ways in which New South Wales was reported in the Scottish press and compares those reports with conditions in Scotland at the time. The comparisons and analyses of the letters, with consideration of their authors and likely readers as well as the newspapers in which they were printed demonstrate that the letters did have potential to influence emigration decisions. Its particular contribution to knowledge arises from demonstrating how mostly private letters which became publicly available through publication in newspapers had potential to influence emigrants’ decisions about moving to Australia. Rather than claiming direct evidence of the publication of particular letters as having influenced emigration, it shows how reporting of conditions in Australia when set into a context of contemporary events and conditions in Scotland had potential to influence decisions. It is grounded in the body of historical research about colonial Australia and sits within this Australian historiographical context. Given the motivations and attractions of Scots to colonial Australia this thesis also engages with techniques and theoretical approaches associated with Scottish diaspora studies, an area of research that often emphasises other Scottish migration patterns to Canada, New Zealand and the USA. When considered together both of these historiographical approaches lend themselves to primary source material analysis and a methodological approach that this doctoral study uses to examine the motivations of Scots who migrated to colonial Australia.<br>Doctor of Philosophy

Abstract:
During 2019, it became increasingly popular for countries to declare a climate emergency – often on demand of their citizens. As such, the term ‘climate emergency’ had a significant increase in usage and got dubbed the Word of the Year 2019. In an effort to investigate discourses around ‘climate emergency’, I used a combination of corpus linguistics and discourse analysis with framing theory, as used in ecolinguistics, and compared with ‘climate change’; the UK parliamentary climate emergency declaration was used as the point of comparison. I compiled a corpus of almost 100,000 words (consisting of news articles) for each term in the time period Jan-Aug 2019 (four months before and after the declaration). The results showed that there were three overlapping frames (politics, problem, threat) – as well as three unique frames for ‘climate change’ (war, cause, predicament). There were no differences in what frames occurred before and after the climate emergency declaration, but there were differences in the words included in the frames – both in terms of frequency and what words were used.

Abstract:
This thesis describes and analyzes how the online newspaper genre has evolved since its inception on the Internet in the mid-nineties. The overall research question is: What characterizes the online newspaper genre evolution? The thesis is based on both synchronic and diachronic studies with a multimethod approach (including six different studies involving, e.g., interviews, questionnaires and web site analyses) intended to provide a comprehensive picture of this genre evolution. On the basis of genre theory, the thesis proposes a framework for understanding online newspaper genre evolution, integrating design (layout) aspects with publisher and audience views. Applying this framework to the collected empirical material, the thesis presents a comprehensive and integrated view of this evolution. Over time, online newspapers have evolved into a specific digital genre, with genre characteristics such as content and form, distinguishing them from other digital genres. However, this rapid development has also lead to diversities in form and function, triggering both academics and practitioners to seek ways to design for consistency within the genre. Several factors have influenced the online newspaper genre evolution, e.g., inhouse attitudes, business model shifts and technological progress at the publishers’ side. The audience demographics, habits and preferences have also changed. The layout of the online newspapers has been altered into long pages stuffed with content like news streams, headlines, photos, and services not possible in the printed edition. There has also been a shift towards frequent updates throughout the day and more content produced for the web. In addition, the thesis contributes to digital genre theory by modifications relevant to the online newspaper genre. For example, the concepts of genre awareness and genre interdependence are elaborated, a framework for identifying genre characteristics is proposed, and the concept “positioning” is introduced. Further, the thesis also contributes with implications for online newspaper design and publishing with longitudinal mappings of online newspaper layout and the habits and preferences of the audience.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study examined the role of the Korean ethnic press in Australia with special reference to the ways in which their professional backgrounds shaped the construction of the news content of their newspapers. The study sample consisted of six Korean ethnic newspapers produced in Sydney. Both intrinsic and extrinsic factors relevant to the role of journalists were identified in interviews with the editors and publishers. The overall news content was analyzed through quantitative and qualitative content analysis. The principal finding of this study was that none of Shoemaker's (1987) theoretical statements about how economic factors shape news content could be applied to the Korean ethnic press in Australia. Despite their reliance on commercial sources for their economic survival, all six papers devoted more space to issue oriented news than to event-oriented news, and were not responsive to their readers and advertisers in Shoemaker's terms. Journalistic professionalism as discussed by Henningham (1989) also was treated as a less important factor by Korean ethnic newspaper staff. Rather the professional identity of the ethnic press editors and publishers was grounded in the culture of their local community instead of in the mainstream standards of It is concluded that Korean ethnic newspapers in Australia have more pragmatic criteria both for the selection of their news content, and for the professional standards of their newspaper staff.

Abstract:
This research is a corpus-based study with both quantitative and qualitative approaches with the aim of ascertaining the lexical features of business news so as to assist Taiwan's university students in reading business news articles for better comprehension. For this study, a 1.23 million-word corpus was created by collecting business news articles from English language newspapers published in Taiwan. This corpus was used to investigate the word frequency of business news genre. Based on the word frequency, other lexical features were also investigated. These features include word type distribution, coverage of the General Service Word List (GSL) and the Academic Word List (AWL) in the corpus, the applications of Zipf's Law and Powers' vocabulary prediction theory on the business news genre, and an analysis of the lexical difficulty of articles written by local journalists based in Taiwan and by press agency journalists. The suitability of the vocabulary in Business English textbooks commonly used in Taiwan's universities was also assessed in this study. In light of there being no business news word lists available, two word lists - one general with 2,200 words, the other business-specific with 700 words - were compiled, based on the corpus created for this study. The first word list aims to help students gain a lexical knowledge which can cover 95% of business news text; the second one, narrowed down from the first word list, is a condensed, quick- view word list of business terminology. These two word lists, derived from a business news genre, were created for EFLlESL students to prioritise, and aims to help students make efficient and effective progress in their comprehension of business news.

Abstract:
The so-called refugee crisis was among the most significant events affecting European political and social structures during the previous decade. Previous research proves that the questions regarding refugee reception had instigated a rise of ethno-nationalistic and exclusionary sentiments across Europe. The Polish context has been a clear example. This study aims to analyze the ways in which Polish media produced and reproduced the discourse pertaining to the refugee crisis and subsequently the perceived representation of refugees. Based on the review of literature and theories of discourse, mediatization, politicization and Othering, selected mainstream media articles from 2014 to 2017 were analyzed. The findings illustrate that an exclusionary discourse and Islamophobic notions were prevalent during this period. Moreover, the results indicate that a discursive shift regarding the representation of refugees has occurred, significantly altering the manner in which Polish society perceives both refugees and the refugee crisis more generally.

Abstract:
Since the eighteenth century user contribution has been a crucial part of newspaper production. Without the participation from the public there hasn’t been a newspaper at all. The professionalization of the publicist role became the starting point who changed how people valued user contribution. Societal change and the technical development has then led to the society we have today – a place where media organizations find themselves in a greater need for user participation to survive. The purpose of this study is therefore to examine how three local news papers reason about and react to user generated content and also to find out what possibilities the users have to participate. Thru semi structured interviews with the legally responsible publisher for each news paper and two journalists from each editorial staff our result shows that the news papers have a positive attitude towards user generated content in general. The informants say that the technological development have been both an improvement and inhibitory in the relationship to the readers. They believe in an increased cooperation in the future but at the same time emphasize the fact that user generated content can’t be allowed to take too much place and become a rival to the journalistic material. The informants also say that the knowledge they posses thru their journalistic education is the main core in their work as well as in the idea and function of the news paper. That is the way it should remain. We use terms and theories about the public sphere, participation, media convergence and the journalistic profession in our discussion.

Abstract:
M.A., Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand, 2011<br>This research focuses on the analysis of ideology and language in six Lebanese newspapers, and tries to establish if, and to what extent, the ideology behind the text limits the freedom of expression of the newspaper in question. The Lebanese press is a good example because events are published in three languages and each plays a major role in the country. In order to achieve the aim of this research, an event that is reported in various political newspapers is analysed in order to register the different attitudes of the Lebanese political press according to the ideology of the particular newspaper. Lebanese journalists visited the Maronite Patriarch after the 2006 July war between Hezbollah and Israel, and the discourse of this event in the political press reflects the conflict of attitudes among the different parties or groups inside Lebanon towards this war. Discourse analysis is applied in this research by analysing the data in accordance with its principles. This research evaluates the transitivity of the sentences, the active and passive voice used in the articles, the modality with the help of modal auxiliary verbs, disjuncts or modal adjectives. It also analyses the headlines and the representation of the article in each newspaper. In this research, the discourse used in each newspaper is to be analysed and criticised relying on Halliday, Fowler, Nordlund, Thompson, Fairclough and Reah.

The research studies in confronting Appledaily News which has been published in Taiwan, and what kind of effect has happened in China Times, United Daily News and Liberty Times when they compete with one another. The research uses the content analysis to analyze whether or not this competition will make the front page of a newspaper become more diverse in News industry. Otherwise, the research also wants to find out whether or not the diversity of Appledaily News is better than other Newspapers. According to this research, the competition of newspaper industry is eminent positive correlated with the news subject on the front page of a newspaper, and also with the diversity of the source. So China Times、United Daily News and Liberty Times in competition period are more diversity in the news subject on the front page of a newspaper and the source than oligopoly period. In addition, Appledaily is more diversity in the same measure than China Times, United Daily News and Liberty Times.

Mwangi, Susan W. "The impact of commercialisation of the media on the content of the conglomerate-owned community newspapers in South Africa: study of four community newspapers form the Caxton CTP Publishers stable." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10539/4765.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation draws on empirical research in the print media to consider the impact of commercialisation on the content ferried in community newspapers. The central argument of market driven theories (Badalsty, 1992; Howley, 2005; Bagdikian, 2004) is that the negative effects of commercial interests and dependency on advertisers can be felt on the news pages. In light of what Gillmor (2004:4) refers to as “corporatisation of journalism” this research explores the various issues and themes discussed in four Johannesburg-based community newspapers, namely, Alex News, Diepkloof Urban News, Rosebank-Killarney Gazette and Fourways Review. The research employs both Qualitative and Quantitative Content Analysis research methods to determine the nature of the publications’ content. The findings of this research indicate that at least two thirds of the content ferried in conglomerate-owned community newspapers has a market-driven slant – meaning that they do not carry high proportions of substantive content. Howley (2005:140) argues that news has become a commercial product that is “shaped, packaged and marketed with a constant eye for profits. Newspapers are businesses dedicated to presenting information within the parameters of profitability”. The desire to please advertisers means that newspapers shun controversial issues, politics and debates for fear of alienating readers. He adds that this aversion is a kind of self-censorship that guarantees that political ideas of public interest do not reach the community and the net result of commercialisation make newspapers content banal. A newspaper operating in a market-driven environment does not, in the words of McManus’ (1994:218), serve the primary purpose of news, which is to explain how the environment is working so that the citizens can make good decisions, particularly civic decisions. The findings of this research have shown that in their current state, conglomerate-owned community newspapers fall short of this journalistic ideal.
