Abstract:
In this paper, we present a logical analysis of the graphical elements used to structure the earliest Sinhala newspaper front page layouts. Furthermore, a hierarchical structure is proposed logically to represent the structure of the front page layout of the earliest Sinhala newspapers. In addition, to improve the aesthetics of the entire design, hierarchy makes it easier to convey both primary and secondary information printed on a structured document that is composed of elements. A hierarchical level represents the structure of a newspaper's front page. Graphical elements help to develop the visual structure of a newspaper front page. Identification and analysis of graphical elements are performed by visual analysis. The approach is a top-down method, and based on domain knowledge, the front pages of the earliest Sinhala newspapers were analysed. The researcher tries to find the answer to the statement, whether the earliest Sinhala newspaper front pages also follow the same logical hierarchical structure as presented for the printed forms.

Abstract:
T. Smykovskaya writes about a unique episode of Russian literary history: the development of so-called ‘labour-camp literature’, more specifically, lyrical poetry, published in the camps’ newspapers. The article focuses on BAMlag’s principal paper Stroitel BAMa, which saw publications of works by A. Alving, P. Florensky, A. Tsvetaeva, and other detainees. In her examination of the material, which so far has provoked little to no scholarly interest, the author highlights the key themes, images and subjects of labour-camp literature. Essentially, the article attempts to focus on the yet unknown history of the newspaper Stroitel BAMa, the main printed medium of BAMlag, as well as to describe the paper’s artistic and journalistic paradigm, which defined the literary activities of Svobodlag for a decade. Therefore, the article covers the newspaper’s history from the 1933 competition for its name until the emergence of the poetry section in the mid-1930s; from the Stakhanov theme, omnipresent in ‘free’ and labour-camp poetry alike in 1936, until eulogy of the Soviet leaders in pre-war years.

Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to define the artistic and extraliterary features of the literary section of one of the first and most significant private newspapers of Ural Region at the turn of the twentieth century. The conclusions of the article are based on the genre attribution of works published in the newspaper (a poetic legend, feuilleton, soldier’s tale), the correlation of these works with the sociocultural and geographical contexts, and the peculiarities of the authors’ biographies. The article notes an attempt to correlate heterogeneous phenomena in the literary section made by the editorial board of the newspaper. It is important because of the peculiarities of the newspaper’s circulation at that time and the awareness of the geographical position of the Urals as a “middle” region. In the newspaper, there are themes, plots, genres of works of Western European literature and the East, the fate of authors, actively moving to the east (Siberia, the Far East) and to the west, newspaper, and literary texts proper. The editorial policy for Ural was formed along the lines of the coexistence of different esthetic and political views. This was due to the extraliterary peculiarities of the newspaper’s circulation at the turn of the century and the need to attract the attention of readers by any means to provide financial success. In the study, the author applies the genre and motif analysis of literary works. The conclusions are based on a wide literary and illustrative material of the Ural newspaper and other newspapers of Ural Region, the memoirs of contemporaries, and archival materials. The characteristic features of literary critical materials published in the Ural newspaper confirm the features of the editorial policy indicated: an appeal to contemporary authors and authors of the past and to works whose authors had different aesthetic views. As a result, the author of the article concludes about the medial position of the literary department of the Ural newspaper, uniting literary works that are diametrically opposed in sociocultural, aesthetic, and geographical terms.

Abstract:
Although Istanbul is the heart of the Ottoman press, İzmir is an important city for the Ottoman society to meet the "newspaper" phenomenon. The Turkish press in İzmir, where the press in foreign languages developed, started with the Aydın newspaper published in 1869. Aydın newspaper, which has the status of an official newspaper, was followed by the Devir newspaper published in 1872. The third Turkish newspaper published in İzmir, after Aydın and Devir newspapers is İntibah. Limited information is available about this newspaper, as no copies of it have survived. İntibah newspaper ordered new typeface and tools in order to eliminate the printing errors it experienced due to the typeface. In order not to leave the readers without a newspaper in the required time for the ordered material to reach İzmir, it decides to publish a copy named İlâve-i İntibah, printed with lithography. However, this initiative is not accepted by the official authorities. This study focuses on the copy named İlâve-i İntibah published by İntibah newspaper. The study aims to reveal that the İlâve-i İntibah copy is a humor magazine in terms of content and within this context, İzmir is the second Turkish humor magazine published after Kara Sinan, the first Turkish humor magazine. It is thought that the study will make a significant contribution to the literature on Turkish Press History, especially İzmir Press History.

Abstract:
This paper provides a historical overview of German newspapers published in Osijek. In the period between the liberation from the Turks and the end of World War Two, almost half of Osijek’s population were Germans, which enabled them to play a significant role in all aspects of city life, and newspaper publishing was no exception. A review of German newspapers published in Osijek revealed that they differed in content, publication frequency and longevity. After reading and reviewing both scholarly and scientific literature, it was concluded that most facts about the newspapers were not completely, but partially preserved in a non-chronological order. Newspaper publishers operated in difficult circumstances and frequently changed editors and owners. However, today, we can claim, that German newspapers published in Osijek were vital, diverse in form and important to (educated) readers and their needs and habits. The newspapers were similar to magazines and covered all facets of life, including politics, science, economy, art and culture. Such newspapers covered everything their readership might find interesting, and many Croats contributed to those German newspapers as associates. This paper is based on the review of research and scholarly and scientific papers. The intention was to follow the logical and chronological structure of German newspapers.

Abstract:
This paper examined the grammatical blunders in Nigerian Newspapers drawing its data from the Nigerian Tide Newspaper. It is anchored on the Error Analysis Theory (EAT). This study adopted the content analysis design which involves the examination of the manifest content of the Tide Newspaper. All the online and offline versions of the Tide Newspaper published within the month of August 2023 constituted the population of the study. But the data for this study were gathered from the twelve (12) offline version of newspaper published within the said month (August 2023). This study observed few tense errors in some of the newspapers. It was also noticed that punctuation errors were more that the sentence errors. Another dominate error observed is wrong capitalisations which is as a result of the in-house style of the newspaper. The initial letters of function words (closed class) were written in capital letters in the headlines of the newspaper. It was further observed that some words were either misspelt or misused in the newspaper. It was recommended that the management and editors of the Nigerian Tide Newspaper should modify their in-house style to reflect the convention of writing function words with small letters in the title of an essay.

Abstract:
The aim of the present article is to analyse how selected minority language newspapers have been adopting to the challenges, as well as the opportunities linked to digitalization. This is approached in a long-term perspective, and thus also takes into account the most recent changes implemented as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The analysed outlets are Berria (a Basque language newspaper published in Spain), Der Nordschleswiger (a German language newspaper published in Denmark), Flensborg Avis (a Danish language newspaper published in Germany) and Nós Diario (a Galician language newspaper published in Spain). Each is characterized by a strong and multifaceted digital presence, in combination with the availability of a print edition albeit in varying frequency. The analysis is anchored in a broad theoretical reflection concerning the nexus between digitalization and minority language media, whereas methodologically it draws from three main sources: interviews with staff members of each newspaper, articles published by the newspapers in terms of self-reporting on the digitalization-related aspects, and available annual reports. With regard to the findings, the analysis paints a picture of the complex, long-term and continuous adaptation strategies of the considered newspapers to the digital context, with the pandemic period resulting in consolidation rather than in major modifications. Only in the case of Flensborg Avis can the issue of a relative deepening of the digital shift be mentioned, although this is also against the backdrop of previously initiated digitalization-related changes. Consequently, this comparative study offers a unique consideration of both kin and non- kin state situations, showing that certain trends can be observed in contrasting linguistic and institutional settings; however without identifying a clear best practice model.

In the history of the Ottoman press, newspapers published in French are very important in terms of describing the political and social life of the period. In addition to reflecting the political developments of the Ottoman period, the French-language press also conveyed the views of European countries on the Ottoman state in a very detailed manner. Abstract:
Decades ago, people hurried to read newspapers. He was ready to count to the last penny in order to buy an interesting edition. At that time, the format and size of the newspaper were different, external beauty was not paid much attention to, it was strict, standard, gray. There were long columns and sloppy lyrics. However, the public was interested in the abundance of news on the pages of the publication. It is not easy to please the modern reader. Television, radio, computers, various CD-MD-DVD players, satellite and cable TV channels attract audiences and make periodicals uncompetitive. However, editors of newspapers and magazines tend to compete and consider different ways to meet the needs of the reader. Undoubtedly, there is room for an attractive design of the publication. The designer and layout designer of a newspaper can be compared to an architect and a builder, and the main elements of the design of a newspaper can be compared to the bricks from which a building is being built, that is, a newspaper issue. Designers and layout designers solve a complex of problems related to the plan of this construction – with the composition of numbers and bands, with the placement of materials, etc. The composition of the pages depends on the composition of the entire issue of the newspaper, which in turn is determined by the content of the published materials and their nature. In almost every newspaper, a more or less stable composition is gradually taking shape, which means the design of the pages, the main sections and headings characteristic of this publication. The article discusses some methods of layout of newspapers and magazines.

Abstract:
Based on the archival documents of the censorship committee, this article studies the factors that influenced the functioning and determined the suspension of the activities of the newspaper “Kavkazskie obyavleniya” (“Caucasian Advertisements”), as well as the policy and some characteristics of the newspaper. The development of advertising and reference newspapers in Tiflis in the second half of the 19th century had the following characteristics: discreteness, short publication time, broadening content, and frequent name change of newspapers. All newspapers of such type were published mainly in Russian, although when compiling the section of advertisements, the editorial boards, for the most part, gave preference to the principle of multilingualism. It was inherent for the vast majority of private periodicals in Tiflis. The newspaper “Kavkazskie obyavleniya” in some sense served as an accompaniment to the Tiflis newspapers and performed two functional roles: on the one hand, the newspaper work as an additional channel for the distribution of Tiflis press, on the other hand, the it accumulated advertising and reference information, and guaranteed the provision of this information to all readers of the Tiflis periodicals. In 1890, the censorship dismissed the publisher’s request to broaden the newspaper's content, and eventually this decision caused the closure of the newspaper.Despite the short period of existence, the newspaper “Kavkazskie obyavleniya” brought noticeable innovations to the advertising activities of the Tiflis periodicals: an endeavor to concentrate advertising and reference information in one information space and mutually beneficial cooperation with rival press.

Abstract:
Newspapers have a very important position in the politics of the Indonesian independence movement. Soara Batak is the first independence movement newspaper published in Batakland. This newspaper became a medium of information and communication, for the political organization Hatopan Kristen Batak (HKB). The initial purpose of publishing this newspaper was to oppose Dutch colonialism and the threat of foreign plantation entrepreneurs who wanted to capitalize on Batakland for personal gain. This can be seen from the motto of this newspaper which is written: Oela tanom, Oelang digomak Oelando which means “Cultivate your land, so that the Dutch do not take it”. This newspaper's courage in criticizing the colonial rulers caused Soara Batak's movements to be closely monitored. Tuan M. H. Manullang and A. Soetan Soemoroeng, the dual HKB and Soara Batak received repressive measures from the colonial government for their bold and sharp writings. The presence of Soara Batak had an important role in the politics of the Batak people's movement, which succeeded in igniting the people's fighting spirit to want to oppose Dutch colonialism which was very oppressive.

The data were also collected based on the newspapers that were published after the Election Day has ended. However, the newspapers were not collected daily as the researcher has chosen a few newspapers that contained the traits of having portrayed electoral campaign. The data were analysed using the thematic analysis by deriving themes from the content analysis of the newspapers. The findings were divided into two sections which are semantical interpretations of newspaper articles’ headlines during post-electoral period and issues highlighted in the political campaigns. The researcher has come to a conclusion that both mainstream and opposition based newspapers were portraying improper political headlines during the post-electoral period.

Abstract:
The article considers literary, journalistic and advertising materials devoted to childhood and children, published in a Siberian pre-revolutionary periodical. At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, the topic of childhood was constantly covered in Russian periodicals, which was connected with the growth in public education, the development of children’s pedagogy, as well as with the general humanization of the public sphere. Texts about children were written not only by the capital’s newspapers, but also by regional newspapers and magazines, which made a great contribution to drawing public attention to the situation of young Russian residents. The aim of this study is to determine the demand for the themes of childhood and the features of their coverage in one of the leading regional newspapers of Russia – Sibirskaya zhizn’, which was published in Tomsk from 1897 to 1919. The newspaper was founded by the famous Siberian businessman and philanthropist Petr Makushin, covered the life of Western and Eastern Siberia, wrote about Russian and foreign events. The average circulation was about 10,000 copies. It is plain to see the scope of this newspaper’s influence over quite a large territory. This study conveys its research through such means as selection of materials, determination and analysis of volumes of materials, identification of main topics of these themes and features of their presentation. The empiric material consists of publications providing insight into themes of childhood in issues of the newspaper Sibirskaya zhizn’ published from November 1897 to December 1900. The main methods of the study were frontal analysis of the newspaper content, complex analysis of the periodical, content analysis, historical-typological and structural-thematic analysis. The author comes to the conclusion that the topic of childhood was in demand by the society, the materials about children were published in every fourth issue of the newspaper, although they were small in volume. The genre palette includes a relatively small number of forms: story, essay, report, note, review, article. The most frequently discussed topics in the newspaper were school, parents, poverty, health, charity, books, and education. In addition, while the literature mainly paints a dramatically negative picture of children’s life, attracting reader’s attention to a social problem, journalism acts as a kind of “counterweight” to it, showing real examples of assistance to children from society’s side. Journalists of the 19th century saw the life of children as extremely difficult, consisting of difficult learning, hard and destructive labor, brutal environment, full of orphanhood and poverty. But Sibirskaya zhizn’ tirelessly stressed that children are fragile, that they need protection, support and care that society can and ought to provide to them.

Abstract:
To prevent boredom and restlessness during early Arctic and Antarctic over-wintering expeditions, leaders often encouraged ‘cultural’ activities, one of the most successful of which was the production of newspapers. Expedition members contributed poetry, short fiction, and literary criticism as well as scientific articles and accounts of their daily activities. These newspapers provide an important insight into the experiences and attitudes of the men who took part in the expeditions. In some cases, the newspaper would be published on the expedition's return, as a means of publicity, fund-raising, and memorialisation. The most famous example is the South Polar Times, the newspaper produced by Robert Falcon Scott's two expeditions. Other polar newspapers remain unpublished and unexamined. This article focuses on the Adelie Blizzard, the newspaper of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition of 1911–14, led by Douglas Mawson. Despite Mawson's efforts, the Adelie Blizzard was never published, and is rarely discussed in any detail in accounts of the expedition. The aim of this article is to address this neglect, by examining the genesis, production and attempted publication of the Adelie Blizzard.

Abstract:
The paper reviewed Ghanaian newspaper issues. It aimed to investigate the coverage of agricultural issues by newspapers in Ghana. Previous studies have either focused on covering specific topics or used data that covered a few years. The study sampled 524 newspapers from issues appearing between January 2010 and 31st December 2019 and subjected them to content analysis using the random composite week method. Data analysis employed descriptive statistics and the Chi-Square test forinferences. Agricultural news constituted only 37% of all news published by the newspaper within the period. Most agricultural news focused on Agricultural investment followed by Agricultural Policy and Strategy, Education and Sensitization and Agricultural Promotion. As low as 8.8% of all agricultural messages were on thepaper'sfront page. About 69% of the agricultural news appeared as letters or features, where as straight formats were only 31%. Though more journalists than agriculture and live stock experts covered agricultural issues, an encouraging number of the authors of agricultural news were agricultural practitioners or experts in related fields. To improve the prominence of agricultural news, decision -makers in the newspaper should ensure that more of such news is put on the front page. Also, agricultural practitioners should publish more in newspapers. Keywords: Newspaper coverage of agricultural issues, content analysis, scope and prominence of agricultural News, Ghana

Abstract:
The intersections between journalism and democracy are explored in this paper through an analysis of the ‘voices’ through which the news is ‘told’ by specific segments of the Australian print media. We argue that evidence of the extent to which a newspaper fulfils its roles to democracy and society is partially found in the range of sources quoted in the news stories it publishes, and in the prominence and dominance it gives to various types of sources in those stories. Our goal was to quantify the validity of the widely held assumption that, in Australia, regional newspapers are closer than metropolitan newspapers to their readers. This suggestion guided our content analysis of the types of news story sources quoted or paraphrased in the general news published in four regional newspapers and one metropolitan newspaper in one Australian state. The assumption of closeness to readers for Australian regional newspapers did not hold up well in this test.

Abstract:
Abstract The expansion of foreign correspondent networks in the late Soviet period reflected the importance that international news and reporting had for readers of the Soviet press. This article traces the development of one such foreign correspondent network, that of the Soviet newspaper Sel’skaia zhizn’ (Rural Life), one of the most popular and widespread newspapers in the Soviet Union. Although historiographically overlooked in favor of major political newspapers like Pravda (Truth) and Izvestiia (News), Sel’skaia zhizn’ was an important source of foreign news for the rural population of the Soviet Union. The article examines the role of the editorial office of Sel’skaia zhizn’ in creating a correspondent network, tracing the geographical reach of the newspaper’s correspondents (sobkors) and analyzing their activities and different types of publications. While some materials were similar to those published in other Soviet newspapers, the specifically rural audience of Sel’skaia zhizn’ influenced the topics chosen for articles as well as the style of the authors. The newspaper became a practical guide for readers because foreign correspondents provided them with unique information about the development of agriculture abroad. The article provides research into how readers perceived international news and information in Sel’skaia zhizn’, finding that readers expected the newspaper to fulfill their needs and to reflect their own interests, even in the international section.

Abstract:
As part of an attempt to reconstruct the original distribution and relative abundance of lake sturgeon in tributaries to Lake Michigan, old newspapers were surveyed for accounts of sturgeon captured by sport and commercial fishers. The reliability of this process was assessed in several ways. A historical column in a modern newspaper (De Pere journal) proved useful for identifying the time period during which original accounts of sturgeon were first published (late 1800s–early 1900s) and the season when most historical catches occurred (the spring spawning season), but a complete survey of the original newspapers revealed many more records than resurfaced in the historical column and some significant accounts that were published outside of the spawning season. Independent surveys of De Pere newspapers by different searchers revealed that the average searcher found a majority of known records (more than 90%). The seasonal distribution of catches in the Lower Fox River as revealed by historical newspaper accounts was very similar to that based on modern sightings, and the newspaper contained several accounts of sturgeon in other parts of the drainage or other parts of Wisconsin. However, comparison with newspapers published in the neighbouring community of Green Bay revealed that the latter included few of the incidents reported in the De Pere paper, and few additional accounts appeared in the Green Bay papers that were not reported in De Pere. Although the De Pere newspaper accounts taken alone reveal a history of sturgeon exploitation in this microcosm remarkably parallel to patterns of sturgeon exploitation nationwide, our initial focus on the De Pere paper appears to have been fortuitous in that few local newspapers along the Lake Michigan shoreline would have yielded comparable amounts of historical information.

Abstract:
This article examines the coverage in the White Guard press of events related to the actions of the partisans of Eastern Transbaikalia against the regime of ataman G.M. Semenov. The research was based on the issues of the newspaper «Zabaikalskaya Nov», published in Chita in 1919 and 1920, as well as the newspaper «Far East», published in Vladivostok. Many of the materials of these newspapers devoted to the actions of the East Trans-Baikal partisans are being introduced into scientific circulation for the first time. As a result of the analysis of newspaper publications, it was found that on the pages of these newspapers there are practically no pronounced propaganda materials directed against the actions of the partisans or their leaders. At the same time, the newspaper issues contain a large number of published reports reflecting the fighting of the Semenov troops against the partisans. A large amount of this data allows to trace the actions of the warring parties with high accuracy and is a good basis for further study of the Civil War in the territory of Transbaikalia. Of particular interest are publications devoted to the Bogdatsky Battle, the largest battle of the Civil War in Eastern Transbaikalia. These materials make it possible to reconstruct the details of the battle with high accuracy, significantly complementing the memoir sources available on this issue.

In response to concern about newspaper coverage of bank robberies in Australia, this study examines whether newspaper publicity resulting from successful bank robberies leads to copycat increases of bank and other robberies during the following week. It makes use of police records of robberies in New South Wales and newspaper stories for 1987 to 1989 from the two tabloids published daily in Sydney. No evidence of any copycat effect was found. Moreover, there was little evidence that the newspapers concerned were paying undue attention to bank robbery.

Full text
Abstract:
The relevance of the research is due to the fact that in published works on the history of the first Chuvash newspaper «Khypar» and coverage of its founder’s biography, insufficient attention was paid to the study of archival documents. As a result, distorted conclusions about the activities of publishers-editors in one or another period of the newspaper’s functioning took root in historiography. For example, all researchers considered N.V. Nikolsky to be the publisher-editor of 22 issues, while he, being the owner, published 33 issues; the second editor of the newspaper, S.K. Kirillov, was only «a responsible editor», and N.V. Nikolsky remained the publisher. The legally full-fledged publisher-editor P.A. Alekseyev was the prison editor, when he worked, the editorial policy was actually directed by the Chuvash Socialist Revolutionaries (the SRs) headed by T.N. Nikolaev (Khuri); the creative process was headed by V.I. Ivanov – the unofficial editor of 6 issues, and the official publisher -editor, after purchasing the newspaper from P.A. Alekseev, of the last 16 issues of the newspaper. The purpose of the study is to eliminate false information on publishers-editors of the first Chuvash newspaper. Materials and methods. The research materials were published works on the newspaper «Khypar», as well as recently found sources. The principles of historicism, objectivity and consistency were used, as well as research methods: historical-genetic, analytical, problem-chronological, factual ones. Research results. Dozens of works have been published on creation, development and evolvement of the first Chuvash newspaper. Most of the information provided in them is reliable, as they are based on authentic documents. It is known that in 1906–1907 the «Khypar» in different periods was edited by N.V. Nikolsky, S.K. Kirillov, S.I. Ignatiev, P.A. Alekseev, V.I. Ivanov, which is confirmed by the output data of subsequent issues, and the certificates issued to each publisher-editor by the Kazan governor. Meanwhile, due to inattention of the researchers, some mistakes were made. For example, S.K. Kirillov was not a publisher-editor, he was the responsible editor of 11 issues during N.V. Nikolsky’s regular vacation and the latter remained the publisher, that is, an economic entity; N.V. Nikolsky did not voluntarily refuse to publish «Khypar», but was forced to retire from publishing because of the «onslaught of the Simbirsk people» – the Chuvash organization of the Socialist Revolutionary Party headed by T.N. Nikolaev (Khuri); P.A. Alekseev was a front editor, in fact the editorial office was headed by V.I. Ivanov; A.A. Nikolaeva, the sixth publisher-editor, was also a prison-editor, but she was unable to publish any issues, when she was occupying this post , «Khypar» was closed by the authorities as a politically unreliable publication. Conclusions. Monographs and articles published to date admitted inaccuracies in covering the history of the Chuvash periodical press, the ancestor of which was the newspaper «Khypar». Moreover, the authors often freely interpreted archival documents and memoirs of active participants in events directly related to publishing the newspaper. The author of this article analyzed a large array of literature and archival documents about «Khypar», some of the sources were introduced into scientific circulation for the first time. As a result, adjustments were made to the establishment of the periodical’s periodization, objective data on the activities of publishers-editors are provided.

Abstract:
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the mass media was critical in conveying information about public health concerns and initiatives by the government aimed at mitigating the pandemic. This study used content analysis to determine how the COVID-19 news was framed in Indonesian and Malaysian media published between January and March 2021. This study examined the Republika and The Star newspapers. According to the findings of the data analysis, the results of this research found five general topics in both newspapers: public health, government policy, economics, politics, and culture and religion. The Republika newspaper publishes the most articles on public health, whereas The Star newspaper publishes the most articles on government policy, economy, politics, culture, and religion. However, public health and government policy are more popular topics in both countries. Meanwhile, based on the two newspapers, there are five types of news tones: solutions, fears, impacts, suggestions, and conflicts. A fearful tone is prevalent in Republika news, while the other four news tones may be found in The Star. The high prevalence of news with a fearful tone in the Republika newspaper is due to the high death rate caused by COVID-19, as well as the emergence of a new variant of COVID-19, even though news in Malaysia is widely broadcast using a solution tone and positive messages to readers.

Abstract:
The massive influence of media in our daily life has led to an increased interest of analyzing media discourse among linguists. A newspaper editorial is a distinctive register of print media that expresses the newspaper’s opinion about current issues in the world. The present study showed the results of a linguistic comparative analysis of the language of newspaper editorials that are published recently during the Russia-Ukraine War. The investigation is based on samples taken from leading newspapers in the USA and the UAE. The corpus consists of 24 editorials totaling about 16,673 words written in English. The study aimed to investigate two fundamental principles of language use, namely: meta-discourse and phraseology in the genre of newspaper editorials adapting a quantitative content analysis approach. Hyland’s (2005b) interactional model of meta-discourse has been applied in the analysis. Data showed a high level of similarity between the USA and the UAE editorials in terms of frequency of several linguistic markers. Data also showed that stance markers were significantly higher than engagement markers in both corpora. Moreover, results reported a variety of use of collocations, modality, and idiomatic expressions. The study concluded that newspaper editorials are argumentative texts that are distinguished by the use of hedges, attitude markers, and other persuasive devices. The study combines key linguistic concepts and contributes to the field of discourse analysis as it provides useful insights about media discourse and newspaper discourse particularly editorials.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to artistic journalism and artistic publications in the newspaper “Novgorod Veche”, published in Novgorod from the autumn of 1917 to the summer of 1918. The newspaper publishers were V.S. Kolomensky and A.E. Gogolev, who were representatives of the Association of Cooperators Unions of the Novgorod Province. The content of this newspaper was devoted to the activities of the cooperative in the Novgorod province and country. The texts are mainly concerned with politics and economics, although the publication was of a universal type. “Novgorod Veche” was in opposition to the Bolshevik government. The creators of the publication relied on the self-organization of society and defended the legal right of the Constituent Assembly to determine the future of Russia, even despite the dispersal of the meeting by the Bolsheviks on January 7, 1918. The newspapers’ opposition was pamphlet through the publication of pamphlets and feuilletons, which discussed local and Russian events. The Bolsheviks and the political decisions they made were assessed negatively. According to the newspaper’s editors, the Bolshevik power aggravated the catastrophic situation within the country and at the international level. There are few literary texts in the newspaper “Novgorod Veche”: poems, stories, essays, literary criticism. A special place in the first issues of the newspaper is occupied by the column “Calendar of the Novgorod Assembly”, where V. Molochnikov intended to place quotes from wise men, as well as excerpts from books by L.N. Tolstoy.

Abstract:
This article is devoted to the linguistic research of journalistic essays devoted to Old Believers published in the newspaper Nizhny Novgorod Diocesan Gazette in 1865-1868. The culture of Old Believers in the middle of the 19th century in the Nizhny Novgorod land was very developed, which is why for several years the newspaper published essays about the history of this movement. The publication formulated its goal as informing and educating the reader, while the target audience of the newspaper was primarily considered to be rural priests. It is interesting that in the pursuit of an objective presentation of historical facts, the newspaper's journalists represent the system of values of dissenters in a peculiar way. The article analyzes the representation of such concepts as "sacrament", "sin" and "crime", and identifies the main value oppositions that express the conflict between the perception of the world by Old Believers and the authors of newspaper essays: "external – internal", "civil – spiritual".

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the analysis of materials from the newspaper “Chelyabinsky Rabochiy” during the first five-year plans (1928–1937) as part of the press’s reflection of events related to the industrialization of the city. It examines the role of the periodical press as part of propaganda and agitation policies among the masses. It is noted that from the late 1920s to the early 1930s, there was a growth in the number of newspapers in the USSR. According to the First Five-Year Plan for the development of the national economy of the USSR (1928), the Southern Urals, led by Chelyabinsk, was designated as the second coal and metallurgical base. Therefore, the ideas of industrial construction needed to be effectively communicated to the population through propa-ganda in local periodicals, with the largest being the newspaper “Chelyabinsky Rabochiy”. In the course of studying the materials published in the newspaper, the authors identified six thematic blocks, through which they were able to trace the indirect influence of the information published in the newspaper on the processes of industrialization in Chelyabinsk.

Abstract:
Based on unpublished documents, many issues of Vietnamese history from 1940 to 1945, when France and Japan governed over Vietnam, could be researched in depth. Due to the linguistic and geographical challenges of using foreign languages, such as French and Japanese, the Vietnamese documents in all written forms, including Vietnamese newspapers, attest to their significant values. Along with Sciences Newspaper and Tri Tân, Thanh Nghi Newspaper was one of the three most widely legal-published newspapers in North Vietnam in this period. In its five-year existence, 120 published issues, and 1000 articles, Thanh Nghi had not only reflected Vietnam’s economic, political, and social affairs but it promoted national development by disseminating information and knowledge as well as struggling for social advancement. The documentary values of this weekly newspaper are identified not just in its research articles, essays, and investigative reports. Rather, the newspaper itself became a forum for Vietnamese intellectuals, composed of doctors, engineers, writers, presenting their opinions to contribute to advance the nation. Many journalists were the pioneers in building a people-owned regime. If effectively unearthing the Thanh Nghi material, it could provide tremendous value to research the Vietnamese history in the 1940 - 1945 period in various aspects, thus narrowing the research flaws in previous studies and bestowing a multi-dimensional viewpoint on this controversial historical period.

The article addresses some aspects of communication circuits, in the initial decades of press circulation in Brazil, especially on the eve of Independence (1822), when printed newspapers began to be published gradually throughout the Brazilian territory, in what we can define as explosion of the public word from north to south of the country. The objective is to reflect on the initial moment of newspaper circulation in the 19th century, the century of the newspaper, also, in Brazil. Using the periodicals themselves as documentation to show communicational transits, it briefly highlights, based on the news published in the Diário do Rio de Janeiro, which circulated in the Court, from 1821 onwards, some of these circuits involving Brazil-Portugal.

Abstract:
News value theory rates geographical proximity as an important factor in the process of issue selection by journalists. But does this apply to science journalism? Previous observational studies investigating whether newspapers preferentially cover scientific studies involving national scientists have generated conflicting answers. Here we used a database of 123 biomedical studies, 113 of them involving at least one research team working in eight countries (Australia, Canada, France, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States). We compiled all the newspaper articles covering these 123 studies and published in English, French, and Japanese languages. In all eight countries, we found that newspapers preferentially covered studies involving a national team. Moreover, these “national” studies on average gave rise to a larger number of newspaper articles than “foreign” studies. Finally, our study resolves the conflict with previous conclusions by providing an alternative interpretation of published observations.

Abstract:
This paper examines the discursive construction of terrorism-related information conveyed on the Indonesian newspapers. The Jakarta Post, one of the most notable Indonesian English-language newspapers, have been covering terrorism related encounters in its editorial especially after the 2002 Bali bombing. This paper finds out the use of common definitions and terms as well as the discrepancies in the produced expression related to terrorism and extremism in the editorials the newspaper has published since 2014. It is found that the newspaper has symphatetically portrayed and supported the victims while it represented the perpetrators from their ideological perspectives and separating their ideologies from religious teaching practices in the country. Additionally, the newspaper identifies terrorism as threat to Indonesian democratic values and classifies terrorism as a serious issue endangering the country’s security and social stability. To the latter end, the newspaper suggested policy recommendation while at the same time criticizing the law enforcement for failures and in the end promoting secular values for the country in order to eradicate terrorism.
