Abstract:
In this thesis, I present my published works in the broad field of medical microbiology. Over a period of thirty years I have worked in a range of settings,. including hospital and public health laboratories, major reference laboratories and academic science departments. I have studied significant public health issues associated with each position, and therefore, while there is no single theme in my work, the emphasis of my research has been very much on the development and validation of methods and their application to public health microbiology. My early work was on obligately anaerobic bacteria. I began to study Clostridium difficile during my doctoral research and continued for several years after I completed my PhD. My expertise in anaerobic microbiology led to several book chapters and ultimately to an undergraduate textbook and an edited volume on anaerobic microbiology methods. My work on anaerobic bacteria forms one of three themes in my commentary. During my tenure at the University of Ulster; I began to broaden my research to encompass pathogens in the environment. Areas of interest included the survival of pathogenic bacteria during anaerobic digestion of cattle slurry and the anaerobic bacterial flora of flax retting. I moved to the University of West Indies in Barbados, where for 13 years I taught microbiology to medical students and provided clinical microbiology support to the hospital and public health laboratories. This venue provided me with the opportunity to follow a diverse research agenda, with a strong concentration on diseases of local and regional public health importance. I have included some of this work in my third commentary theme, clinical and public health microbiology. My major contributions to the field have undoubtedly been in the diagnosis, taxonomy and epidemiology of leptospirosis. I began working on leptospirosis in 1992 in the former Medical Research Council laboratory in Barbados. My work here included both serological and molecular diagnostic studies, and epidemiological research on reservoir animals and other zoonotic diseases. After moving to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), my work was focussed on developing tools for molecular diagnosis and molecular typing of leptospires and on taxonomy of leptospires. At the CDC, I was also the Acting Chief of the Special Bacteriology Reference Laboratory. In this capacity, I had the opportunity to lead a group focussed on the identification and characterization of previously unrecognised bacterial pathogens. Some of this work is included in my third commentary theme. I moved to Saskatchewan in 2003, to my current position in the provincial public health laboratory. My research in Saskatchewan has been directed towards the use of molecular techniques for diagnosis and epidemiological typing of significant public health pathogens, while mentoring younger scientists. Community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is a public health challenge in our communities and I have made significant contributions to a collaborative effort to understand and control these infections in Saskatchewan. In recent years I also have assumed a leadership role in biosafety and biosecurity regulatory issues and in quality assurance and proficiency testing. An abbreviated copy of my curriculum vitae is included to provide an indication both of the range of my research work and my other contributions to the field. In the interests of brevity, papers presented at conferences and published abstracts are not included.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper is based on an analytical study of 335 keywords extracted from titles and abstracts of 70 research articles, taking ten from each year starting from 2000 to 2006, in decreasing order of relevance, on the subject Fermi Liquid, which is a specific subject under the broad area of Condensed Matter Physics. The research articles have been collected from the bibliographic database of INSPEC. The keywords are indexed to critically examine its physical structure that is composed of three fundamental kernels, viz. keyphrase, modulator and qualifier. The keyphrase reflects the central concept, which is usually post-coordinated by the modulator to amend the central concept in accordance with the relevant context. The qualifier comes after the modulator to describe the particular state of the central concept and/or amended concept. The keywords are further classified in 16 classes on the basis of the four parameters, viz. Associativeness, chronological appearance, frequency of occurrence and category. The taxonomy of keywords will enable to analyze research-trend of a subject and to identify potential research-areas of a subject.

Macleod, Catriona, and Simon Howell. "Reflecting on South African psychology: published research, ‘relevance’ and social issues." SAGE Publications Ltd, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1006277.

Full text
Abstract:
As South Africa prepared to host the 30th International Congress of Psychology in 2012, a call was made to reflect on the strengths of and challenges facing contemporary South African Psychology. This paper presents our response to our brief to focus on social issues by presenting the results of a situational analysis of South African Psychology over the last five years and comparing this corpus of data to a similar analysis reported in Macleod (2004). Articles appearing in the South African Journal of Psychology (SAJP) and abstracts in PsycINFO with the keyword ‘South Africa’ over a 5½ year period were analysed. The content of 243 SAJP articles and 1986 PsycINFO abstracts were analysed using the codes developed by Macleod (2004). Results indicate: an increase in the number of articles, a reduction in the percentage of articles using quantitative methodologies and ‘hard’ science theoretical frameworks (particularly in the SAJP), and an increase in qualitative, theoretical, and methodological papers, and papers using systems-oriented theory (particularly in the SAJP). Traditional topics of assessment, stress and psychopathology continue to dominate, with social issues such as housing, land reform, development programmes, water resources and socio-economic inequities being largely ignored. Most research continues to be conducted in Gauteng, KwaZulu/Natal and the Western Cape, predominantly with adult, urban-based, middle-class participants, sourced mainly from universities, hospitals or clinics and schools. Collaborations or comparisons with other African, Asian, South American and Middle East countries have decreased. While the analysis presented in this paper is limited by its exclusion of books, theses, research reports and monographs, it shows that in published research there are some positive trends and some disappointments. The limited number of social issues featuring in published research, the under-representation of certain sectors of the population as participants, and the decrease in collaboration with, or comparison to, countries from the global ‘South’ represent challenges that require systematic attention.

Mäkinen, J. (Johanna). "Systematic search and evaluation of published scientific research:implications for schizophrenia research." Doctoral thesis, University of Oulu, 2010. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9789514262838.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The aim of this doctoral thesis is to present methods of search, evaluation and analysis of a specific research domain (schizophrenia) from four perspectives: bibliometric analysis of 1) Finnish doctoral theses and 2) Finnish journal articles on schizophrenia, and meta-analysis to determine the prevalence of 3) alcohol use disorders and 4) cannabis use disorders in schizophrenia. Over the years, the number of Finnish articles on schizophrenia has increased, as well as the amount of international collaboration. Bibliometric methods were also found to be feasible in the evaluation of psychiatric research. However, the methods should be used with care. Articles written in collaboration with international organisations seem to receive more citations and are published in journals with higher impact factors, which highlights the importance of developing scientific networks. A considerable proportion (20%) of Finnish scientific schizophrenia articles were published in theses consisting of original papers. The current funding system supports the writing of doctoral thesis consisting of original articles and favours epidemiological and biological research over research into medical treatments. This may affect the research culture in Finland and even slow down the development and improvement of the national treatment system. The reported prevalence of alcohol and cannabis use disorders has differed considerably between studies. No meta-analysis on alcohol or cannabis use disorders in schizophrenia has previously been conducted. In studies (n = 71) on schizophrenia patients, the median prevalence was 15% for current and 26% for lifetime alcohol use disorder, and 16% for current and 27% for lifetime cannabis use disorder. Alcohol use disorders are common in schizophrenia patients, although a declining trend was observed when comparing previous reviews. Cannabis use disorders were found to be more common in younger and first-episode patient samples, as well as in samples with a high proportion of males.

O'Neill, Deirdre. "New values and selectivity in the construction of news : commentary on peer-reviewed published research articles." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2017. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/34426/.

Full text
Abstract:
This Commentary critically appraises my body of work over 15 years, the starting and end points being an exploration of the news values underlying the selection of news carried out 15 years apart, via various case study research articles that examine the type and quality of news that audiences receive. This body of work interrogates – from a range of perspectives – the ways in which some voices are privileged in the press, others are marginalised, while still others are absent in the news. I explore these issues from the perspective of the selection of news, through news values and source selection; how journalists develop those values and use sources to shape the news; the manner in which labour disputes are reported and trade union officials and members are legitimised or delegitimised; the extent to which celebrities are adopted and promoted in the news; how the views and achievements of women politicians are reported; and whether women have made headway in sports news, both in terms of the coverage of women athletes and in sports writing. The Commentary contextualises this body of work within both critical theoretical perspectives and rapid cultural, technical and social changes to situate the nine publications submitted for the degree to make clear the coherent nature of my inquiries. In this research I have maintained a contemporary analytical approach that suggests that the processes by which sources are chosen and news is selected undermines the plurality of voices in the press; that previous understandings of news values are outdated and that news values change over time and need to be revisited; that independent reporting is limited and a great deal of news relies on press subsidies with vested interests; and that ideological factors are frequently being played out in the news we receive. All of these findings have negative implications for the range and quality of our news. My findings have contributed to national and international debates about the news media, including an All-Party Parliamentary Report into Women in Parliament, challenged taken-for granted views about the news we receive and questioned the quality and bias of our news. The research has been disseminated nationally and internationally at leading conferences and in international journals and books, and in press articles, and is widely cited.

Shamseer, Larissa. ""Predatory" Journals: An Evidence-Based Approach To Characterizing Them and Considering Where Research Ought to Be Published." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/41858.

Full text
Abstract:
Seemingly unscrupulous entities, referred to as “predatory” journals, have appeared in scholarly publishing over the past decade. Predatory journals have been characterized as using questionable publishing practices and consequently, as publishing questionable research. At the outset of this thesis, such assertions were based on little evidence, making it difficult to understand how to identify a predatory journal and judge the extent of the potential problem they present. This thesis sought to: (1) determine how the apparent operations of predatory journals differ from their presumed legitimate counterparts; (2) to characterize the epidemiology and reporting of biomedical research published in predatory journals; and (3) to determine what, if any, guidance health research funders provide about selecting journals in which to publish funded research. Predatory journals appear to be distinct from presumed legitimate journals in several ways. For example, they lack descriptions of their editorial processes, ethical policies, and content preservation arrangements more often than presumed legitimate journals. Researchers, globally, have published clinical and preclinical studies reporting on millions of research subjects in predatory journals. Such content is poorly reported against established reporting guidelines; some of it originates from high profile institutions and is supported by well-known biomedical research funders. Most major funders propose journal publication as one way of achieving open access, yet few provide guidance on how to select a journal for this purpose. These thesis findings suggest that some features encountered on journals’ websites may signal potentially questionable journal practices. These features should be further evaluated to determine their accuracy in detecting predatory journals. Additionally, researchers may be sending research to predatory journals which may be of low quality, low priority, or unacceptable in legitimate journals. This is problematic because genuine research efforts/participant contributions may go undetected and never contribute to future knowledge generation. Future research ought to be done to determine why and how researchers, globally, choose where to publish. Research funders ought to agree on guidance and policies to ensure funded research can be found by others and is published in journals indicating basic standards for facilitating this.

Bal, Betul. "Analysis of Four-word Lexical Bundles in Published Resesarch Articles Written by Turkish Scholars." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2010. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/alesl_theses/2.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigated the use of lexical bundles in research articles written in English by Turkish scholars. For the purpose of the study, a corpus of published research articles produced by Turkish scholars in six different academic disciplines was collected. The four-word lexical bundles that appeared at least twenty times in this one million word corpus were identified and further analyzed both structurally and functionally based on the previous taxonomies developed by Biber, Johansson, Leech, Conrad and Finegan (1999) and Biber, Conrad and Cortes (2004). The results of this study revealed that the lexical bundles found have structural correlates as well as strong functional features that help to construct discourse in academic writing. The conclusions drawn from this study could be applied to the teaching of academic genres to researchers in English as a Foreign Language context and are expected to provide insights for further corpus-based studies in academic writing.

Abstract:
Studies of the publishing practices in mathematics education have situated sets of journals in tiers of quality. These reports document the rankings and prestige of only a subset of the wealth of journals available for publishing in mathematics education. We posit that there is value, quality, and purpose to be found in journals that present studies that are of value on a regional level, and that the studies are extremely important to the field. This is particularly important for journals published in languages other than English, and the studies referenced above are almost entirely English-language journals. In this paper we seek to demonstrate that we as a field of researchers cannot discount the value and role of these regional and small-country journals. Using a case study of one small European country, we quantitatively present the areas of strength and weakness in the publishing practices in mathematics education journals that are unlikely to be seen beyond the region of their publication. We conclude with recommendations to publish in areas where research is lacking as well as recommendations to the community at large to recognize the value of such outlets.

Full text
Abstract:
This study conducted a bibliometric analysis for the purpose of identifying the crucial leadership constructs that best explain and/or define effective educational leadership in two decades (1990-2000 and 2001-2010). The study reviewed top authors in educational leadership and analyzed their top cited works to identify leadership constructs which were (a) unique to leadership works within the 1990-2000 decade, (b) unique to the 2001-2010 decade, and c) similar or different between the two decades. The study found that the leadership constructs did evolve and shift during the study period and addressed the changing demands of individuals, educational organizations, and the external environment. Crucial educational leadership constructs were the product of the efforts of researchers in educational leadership to promote effective school leadership, improve learning outcomes and student performance, and create beneficial organizational results. The findings of the study highlight the potential impact and benefit of the continually upgrading and refreshing the understanding, training, and preparation of current and future school leaders.

Harewood, Louise. "Disease-associated balanced chromosomal rearrangements : molecular characterisation of two cases, with a review of the impact of published cases in human genetic research." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/29141.

Full text
Abstract:
Disease associated balanced chromosomal rearrangements (DBCRs) are large-scale alterations in normal genomic sequence, which occur without copy number change in a phenotypically abnormal individual. Complete ascertainment of published DBCRs was attempted via recursive searches of the literature. 775 cases were identified with 1672 breakpoints and 406 different phenotypes. Physical mapping of DBCR breakpoints has elucidated the genetic basis of Mendelian disorders in 29 cases and was the first indication of a subsequently verified disease locus in a further 30 cases. Two interesting DBCR cases, which had no cell-lines or fixed cell suspensions, were available for study: Case 1 had a t(2;12)(p25;q23.3) translocation associated with upper limb peromelia and lower limb phocomelia; Case 2 had a t(1;2)(q41;p25.3) associated with lethal bilateral renal adysplasia. In case 1, the 2p25 breakpoint was found to interrupt the <i>ROCK2</i> gene, which, on the basis of the phenotype of null mice, was considered to be a poor candidate for the peromelia/phocomelia phenotype. The 12q23.3 breakpoint lay 0-25 kb from the 5’ end of the <i>CMKLR1</i>gene, which encodes a chemokine-like receptor, the sole ligand for which is encoded by the retinoic acid responsive gene, <i>RARRES2</i>. Site and stage-specific expression of both the receptor and the ligand in the developing limb bud suggested that <i>CMKLR1</i> was a good candidate for a causative gene. A phenotypically similar case was screened for mutations in <i>CMKLR1 </i>and a candidate regulatory region, but none could be identified. A mouse model is being developed to further elucidate the developmental role of this gene. In case 2, the 2p25.3 breakpoint mapped to a gap in the genome sequence. No good candidate gene could be identified in the vicinity of this gap.

Abstract:
The project aims at exploring the process of designing recommender systems from a users’ perspective. Recommendations are the systems that can help users navigate in the overload of information, that is currently available online. This project focuses on the recommender network of Strossle, which provides article recommendations across various publishers’ websites. User-centered research has been performed to understand the current system and how that influences the users’ perceived experience. The goal was to develop a more engaging content experience for the Strossle recommendation system. This is done by means of participatory design methods. As people tend to use recommendations very sporadic and they often do not really know what they are looking for. The emphasis was on finding the balance between exploratory browsing and navigating towards the users’ preferences. In order to achieve this, a more dynamic widget has been developed that offers navigation in various related topics.

One of those is the divergence in management and leadership practices. Based on a literature review of mote than 234 articles published in journals with an impact factor higher than 1.0, this dissertation identifies how scholars define leadership in China from 2000 until today. The findings can be divided into three groups: Western Theories’ perspective, Eastern Theories’ perspective and Blended Theories’ Perspective wherein cross-cultural studies and transformational leadership dominated the perspectives adopted by researches and were included in the Western Theories’ perspective. In the Eastern Theories’ perspective, Confucianism and Guanxi were the most cited. While in the Blended perspective, Confucianism and Guanxi were blended with several Western Theories. Therefore, even though there is this local culture, the most adopted perspective by international journals and scholars to look and analyze leadership in China is the cross-cultural studies’ and the transformational leadership approach.<br>A partir do ano de 2000, o processo de internacionalização da China se intensificou e tornou ainda mais visível as diferenças culturais diante das perspectivas Ocidentais.

Abstract:
This paper is a précis of a research project conducted in March 2001 for the Master of Library and Information Studies at New Zealandâ s Victoria University of Wellington. The project investigated the perceptions of information professionals (denoting qualified practitioners) in New Zealand regarding applied LIS (Library and Information Studies) research. It was hoped the findings would direct the future production of such research in a way that might promote its use. The project assessed the local situation and attempted to redress an imbalance in the literature created by previous studies focusing on the production, rather than consultation, of LIS research by the practising community. Project participants were asked to indicate their amount of research use; their motivations for and against consulting the research; and their opinions concerning the relationship between LIS research and practice, and how it might be improved. Amounts of research consultation were compared with the following participant variables: Library / information qualifications; Experience, indicated by number of years / months in current position; Library / information centre size; Organisational context of the library / information centre; Involvement in professional activities such as conferences. "Writing toward Published Selves: Teacher-Writers and a Practice of Revision." Doctoral diss., 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.18048.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: This qualitative, action research study examines how teacher-writers' identities are constructed through the practice of revision in an extra-curriculum writing group. The writing group was designed to support the teacher-writers as they revised classroom research projects for submission for a scholarly journal. Using discourse analysis, the researcher explores how the teacher-writers' identities are constructed in the contested spaces of revision. This exploration focuses on contested issues that invariably emerge in a dynamic binary of reader/writer, issues of authority, ownership, and unstable reader and writer identities. By negotiating these contested spaces--these contact zones--the teacher-writers construct opportunities to flex their rhetorical agency. Through rhetorical agency, the teacher-writers shift their discoursal identities by discarding and acquiring a variety of discourses. As a result, the practice of revision constructs the teacher-writers identities as hybrid, as consisting of self and other.<br>Dissertation/Thesis<br>Ph.D. Curriculum and Instruction 2013

Van, der Linde Monique. "Environmental study/management/science orientated papers, published by South African geographers during the period 1996-2001." Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/1987.

Full text
Abstract:
M.A.<br>Geography as a discipline has undergone many different metamorphoses, and has experienced a turbulent and interesting past in its search for identity. Claims are made that geographers put great emphasis on humans and their interaction with their environment. It is therefore widely accepted that Geography is greatly dominated in its teachings by an emphasis on Environmental Management. It is therefore also accepted that South African geographers will participate actively in this practice, and that it will be reflected, distinctively, in their scientific publications. This thesis seeks to examine the validity of the above assumptions. Thus the problem of whether or not the publications by South African geographers are environmentally orientated was surveyed and reviewed for the period between 1996 and 2001. In order to do this it was necessary to undertake an extensive review of all databases, which contained publications, as well as to obtain web-site information on the lecturers at the individual selected universities. Questionnaires were also sent out to the different departments and some personal interviews were conducted. The researcher had to refine the search to an in-depth analyses of only eight of the twenty one Geography departments at South African universities, based on the availability of information. The review reveals the current diverse nature of Environmental Geography in South Africa. In some instances papers have been written that remain within the boun-daries of its sub-discipline, such as the Geomorpological papers. They did however prove to incorporate an application to the field of Environmental Management which could not be ignored, and hence they had to be of environmental relevance. On further inspection it was found that there is an increasing awareness amongst all South African geographers for greater integration to solve problems holistically. More environmentally orientated papers were published towards the end of the study period under review. The survey conducted of the various environmentally orientated papers also revealed the broad and diverse sub-discipline that Geography can cover from an environmental perspective. It can be said that there is a growing trend amongst South African geographers to publish papers that are environmentally orientated. Whether the number (and emphasis that is placed on environmental issues) of publications is large enough, still remains to be seen. It was established that geographers are still focussing more on their specialised areas of interest, in their research. They are still not doing enough to promote an understanding of the environment. The researcher had to conclude that it is disheartening and disappointing to realise what amount of growth is still needed in the emphasis of the area of Environmental Management. Some serious work still lays ahead for geographers and the content of their publications in this respect.

碩士<br>朝陽科技大學<br>幼兒保育系碩士班<br>95<br>A Research on Published Curriculum Documentation of Early Childhood Education from Constructivism View Abstract The main purpose of this research is to understand in depth the constructivism teaching spirit, through collecting and probing constructivism’s relevant theory and documents as well as through analyzing the published curriculum documentation of early childhood education accords with the constructivism teaching spirit situation. In the final of the research, researcher projected the suggestions for educators. Educators can use the suggestions to practice constructive teaching and write curriculum documentation of early childhood. The targets of studying for this research include “Shoe and Meter” “Dancing with the Children”, “Pigeon-Constructive Early Scientific Knowledge”, “Beginning the Project-Implement of Project approach in art class”, “Mei Chao Wang –the Curriculum Documentation of Che Lung Pu Early Childhood to Experiment School’’, and “Little White Whale’s Laundry-A Research on Thematic Teaching from Seed Kindergarten’s Curriculum’’. Through collecting and probing constructivism’s relevant theory and documents, the researcher summarize key elements of teaching spirits of constructivism . And then, researcher used qualitative analysis of content analysis to examine these six published curriculum documentations of early childhood education and understand whether they comply with the constructivism teaching spirit situation. There are five findings as follows: 1. The teaching spirit of constructivism is that teachers can value students’ interests and learning condition. They view students as the principal part of teaching and design appropriate courses to meet students’ physiological and psychological needs. It is good for students to develop their own knowledge via actively exploring, questioning, inter discussion, verification and sharing in a meaningful and abundant learning environment. 2. “Shoes and Meter”, “Pigeon”, “Mei Chao Wang” and “Little White Whale’s Laundry” are all in line with the teaching spirits of constructivism. 3. With regard to “Dancing with the Children”, although the teacher could value children’s pre-knowledge and thinking mode, and take these as reference for teaching course design; offer meaningful and abundant learning environment to assist children to establish relevant knowledge; provide appropriate framework to enhance children’s learning ability; and treasure children’s learning process, there is limited information regarding the process for children to construct knowledge by themselves and lack of conflict situations for conflict recognition. That is hard to confirm that children can develop knowledge on their own in learning process and whether a teacher is permitted to create children’s cognitive conflict in this stage. As the result that we cannot recognize the course is fully compliant with the teaching spirit of constructivism. 4. With regard to “Beginning the Project-Implement of Project Approach in Art Class”, it allows a teacher could take children as the principal part of learning, place importance on children’s interests, and offer an opportunity to actively explore, discuss, verify, share and build up knowledge; value children’s pre-knowledge and thinking mode, and take these as reference for teaching course design; offer meaningful and abundant learning environment to assist children to establish relevant knowledge; provide appropriate framework to enhance children’s learning ability; and treasure children’s learning process. But because it does not allow teachers to create conflict situation, it is hard to recognize that the course fully meet the teaching spirit of constructivism. 5. Constructivism teaching approach is suitable for the use of preschool education. Lastly, based on the research findings some suggestions were made.

Abstract:
Research-based decision making has been advanced as a way for professionals to make a determination about the effectiveness of a potential treatment. However, informed consumers of research need to be able to determine what constitutes evidence-based practices and what criteria can be used to determine if evidence-based practices have been met. This study was a synthesis of research that involved a critical review of the empirical research studies reported in Volume 47 of the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research (JSLHR) published in 2004. This methodological research synthesis evaluated (a) the research designs used in the JSLHR studies, (b) information and rationale used to inform population validity assessment decisions, and (c) the extent to which the sampling designs, population validity rating, data analysis procedures, and the specification of generalizations and conclusions provide sufficient evidence to determine an overall rating of conclusion validity. Results indicated that less than one-fifth of the 105 research synthesis population of studies used experimental research designs. Additionally, the vast majority of the research synthesis population of studies (83.8%) were observational research designs. Only five studies out of the research synthesis population of studies (4.8%) were determined to have high population validity. In contrast, 84.8 percent of the research synthesis population of studies were found to have low population validity. That is, the studies did not contain adequate information or description of the essential sampling concerns. The vast majority or 75.3 percent of the research synthesis population of studies were rated as having low conclusion validity. Approximately one-fifth of the 105 research synthesis study population (22 studies or 20.9%) were found to have moderate conclusion validity while less than five percent of the total studies (4 of 105 studies or 3.8%) were found to have high conclusion validity. A meaningful relationship between population validity ratings and conclusion validity ratings was established. Since 81 of 105 studies have identical ratings for both population and conclusion validity, the accuracy of the prediction model developed for this study is 77.1 percent.

Content analysis was used to analyze “Chinese Children Tales” with a revised classification chart of “elements of myth.” The results of the study were as follows: 1. “characters of myth” and “totem” appeared in all seventeen stories. These two elements were essential in myth stories. 2. The element of “ancient” elements appeared only nine stories. Other eight stories did not contain the element of “ancient” because they were more modern than in the other myths. This result related to the period of occurrence. 3. the concept of “paradise” as a perfect, wonderful life was pursued in all myth stories except two. These two stories presented the ideal conditions that the sun insisted on for reaching the moon, and the Jingwen bird persistently throwing stones from its mouth to fill the ocean. However, the bird stayed only in pursuing ideal conditions, and could not have the desired outcome of paradise. 4.“metamorphism,” meaning change into concrete creatures, was the most prevalent occurrence. Considering children’s life experience and mental development, “metamorphism” appeared as the easiest concrete concept for acceptance by young readers. This study aimed at making people more familiar with myth stories, manipulating the features of the elements of myth and creating modern mythological stories.

Abstract:
Industrial Psychology (IP) has a major impact on millions of workers and thousands of organisations and is given increasing reign in deciding and influencing human affairs within the organisation, thereby playing an important role in society. The field of IP however has been used to uphold the status quo, showing a preference for management over workers. There is also a lack of self-reflexivity, and a failure to address ideology and power relations and the methodological assumptions underlying research and practice. This research project aims to address these problems through the analysis of research articles on a contemporary topic, namely, quality of work life. The aim is to find out whether published research on quality of work life reflects a managerialist ideology in both its’ latent and manifest content. A review of previous research and a theoretical and conceptual background is presented. Critical discourse analysis was used to analyse research articles. It was found that research articles draw on an HRM discourse and uphold power relations and dominant ideologies. There exists within published research and in all likelihood, social practice, the dominance of a managerial perspective and the presence of a managerial ideology. Critical perspectives tend to be marginalised. It is necessary that the critical perspective be brought more into the mainstream, and for industrial/organisational psychologists to challenge the status quo. Points for discussion and recommendations are presented.<br>Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2010

Abstract:
碩士<br>東海大學<br>中國文學系<br>93<br>Children’s history story is one of the most important in children’s story. The history story has the function of literature, historiography and education. From both children’s developing process and reading demand, we can see that the history story has the responsibility of keeping history and transmitting the truth. From 1970, the publisher, Han-Sheng, published “Chinese Children’s Story” in twelve volumes. The publisher hoped our kids could understand these Chinese stories and then have more knowledge about our national culture. These 74 writings in 362 writings (about one fifth of them) are history stories. From this, we can see that how important history stories are, especially for children’s education. Choosing “Chinese Children’s Story”, published by Han-Sheng, as her research scope because the researcher hopes to do multilateral research on contents, obtained materials, form, designed plot and depicting characters. There are seven chapters in this thesis. From “Chinese Children’s Story”, published by Han-Sheng, the researcher analyzes these 74 writings and contrasts historiography with choices of subject-matter. At least, by adapting the story contents, the researcher analyzes the characteristics, topics, point of view, characters and plot. The 74 writings history stories are obtained materials from the Twenty-Four Histories and contents are arranged according to lunar festivals. Besides, the topics all focus on national patriotic sentiment. Wholly speaking, literary techniques and expression of contents are more conservative and most of the writings use the techniques of the abridgement and abridged translation. Nevertheless, there are still some writings breaking through tradition. For example, first the narrating district expands from the central plains of China to Taiwan. Second, characters extend from emperor and ministers to the populace. Third, making good use of dialogues expresses figures’ disposition. Through this researcher and history stories in “Chinese Children’s Story”, published by Han-Sheng, we know the adapting of children’s history stories and its characteristics. What’s more, we also understand the relationship between history story and children’s story. Those people who want to devote themselves to children’s history story can consult it.

In this dissertation, I explore the institutionalization of CCO scholarship. Through an analysis of scholars’ published and public discourse, I demonstrate to what extent CCO scholarship, as an area of research, is becoming established within organizational communication studies and related fields. Through an analysis of scholars’ published discourse and via the application of a neo-institutional perspective, I assess the trajectory and establishment of CCO research from 2000 to 2015. By analyzing scholars’ public discourse at one specific international conference, I then explore how pragmatic ambiguity plays into this institutionalization. This research thus shows how communication is at the center of an area of research’s institutionalization processes.

Abstract:
碩士<br>慈濟大學<br>宗教與文化研究所<br>99<br>Karma Consultation is a kind of veritable local religious treatments in folk religion, and this research is to discover the Rules of Causality from the karma interpretation of 161 genuine stories in the Morality Books Published by Fanyin Hall. The structure in use of in the stories for analyzing is precise medical patient history. The merciful sayings of Buddha and Saint have been found appropriate with requirements of written patient history. It is rich of subjective statements and objective information in the stories. Hence, diagnosis will be frame, and plan and suggestion will be made as an adequate Record of Patient History related to Karma. What has been found in the research is that the wraith is taking a revenge mostly with a permit from the King of Hell and the karma caused in previous lives takes revenge in this life mostly. By analyzing, it is found that cancer is arising when previous life spirit who was killed gets involved and the time when the family members are getting deserved is consistent and the accomplices are often borne in one family and deserve the severe disease. It doesn’t mean, of course, all the thing is caused by karma. The rules of causality seem to give a chance to earthlings for learning as most family members have committed the same karma and reincarnated in one family to carry learning. It is found in the research that enforcement authority of rules of causality is in the nether world. The nether world pictures described in the morality books published by Phoenix Hall have formed the scope of underworld and the dynamic space has been formed since periods of time came into consideration. In these circumstances, the karma interpretation stories have been visualized and the three worlds such as celestial world, human world and ender world have been formed. In the meantime, the revenge taken by the wraith, believers’ praying god and Buddha’s rescuing earthlings join together in the temple to form a space for the three world beings to meet in human world during the period of descending Dao and calamities. The great salvation of three worlds is carrying out in the human world started from committing good deeds to accumulate merits for dissolving the karma and then receiving and cultivating the great Dao. The hell is described as full of ghosts in the stories. It is the time now for three world beings to clear the blood debts and spirits’ reincarnation and suffering are speeding up to give the wraith a chance to take revenge. As soon as the wraith has got the permit, he is entitled to rush to human world to find his blood debtor and take his revenge. The revenge will be taken sooner if the debtor behaves evil, and the revenge will be reduced by merit transferring to the wraith to make him stop taking revenge. Buddha’s assistance provides the opportunity to dissolve the revenge taking. Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺北教育大學<br>兒童英語教育學系碩士班<br>102<br>Cross-cultural variations in writing conventions have been shown to have influence on L2 writing. Previous studies have indicated that there were similarities and differences in the use of move and verb tense in English research article (RA) abstracts written by native English writers (NEWs) and by non-native English writers (NNEWs). Furthermore, the factor of the speech communities sharing the same L1 may be a variable leading to variations in L2 writing. This study investigates the similarities and differences in the use of moves and verb tenses in English abstracts written by Taiwanese and Chinese researchers in L2 research article abstracts related to Applied Linguistics published in Taipei and Peking respectively, in reference to those written by native English writers. The corpus was composed of 50 English RA abstracts published in the U.S.A by NEWs, 50 English RA abstracts published in Taiwan, and 50 English RA abstracts published in Peking. Chi-square tests were used to examine the similarities and differences in the use of move and verb tense among the three groups. The results revealed similarities and differences in the use of move among the three groups. In terms of frequency and sequence of moves, Purpose, Method, Results and Conclusion were considered obligatory (above 50%) by the three groups, while Introduction move was considered optional by NNEWs from Peking, but obligatory to NEWs and NNEWs from Taiwan. The most favorite move pattern used in NEWs was four-move pattern, followed by three-move, five-move, two-move, and one-move structure was not found in the abstracts; the most frequently used move pattern used in NNEWs from Taiwan was four-move pattern, followed by five-move, three-move, two-move, and one-move; the most predominately used move pattern in NNEWs from Peking was three-move, four-move, two-move, five-move, and one-move. The most frequently used move pattern was Purpose-Method-Results-Conclusion in NEWs, Introduction-Purpose-Method-Results-Conclusion in NNEWs from Taiwan, and Purpose-Results-Conclusion in NNEWs from Peking. Furthermore, in the use of verb tense, all the three groups had various preferences in the choice of verb tenses associated with specific function in different moves. In the Introduction move, three groups tended to use present tense; in the Purpose move, three groups tended to employ present tense; In the Method move, NEWs and NNEWs from Taiwan tended to adapt past tense, while NNEWs from Peking tended to use present tense; in the Results move, NEWs and NNEWs from Taiwan tended to use past tense, while NNEWs from Peking tended to employ present tense; in the Conclusion move, three groups tended to use present tense. The results suggested that NNEWs from Taiwan displayed more similarities to NEWs in the use of move and verb tenses in English RA abstracts than NNEWs from Peking. The findings of the current study can serve as valuable references for cross-cultural and cross-regional research in Applied Linguistics, and offer pedagogical implications for the teaching of L2 research writing.
