Garner's Modern English Usage (hereafter Garner4) was published by Oxford University Press USA in 2016. Appearing within a span of two decades, it is the fourth edition of Bryan Garner's dictionary of usage, originally published as A Dictionary of Modern American Usage (Garner, 1998, hereafter Garner1). It is also the second dictionary of English usage to be published during the last three years, following the latest edition of what is arguably its most direct British counterpart, Fowler's Dictionary of Modern English Usage (Butterfield, 2015, hereafter Fowler4).

“Predatory publishing” refers to conditions under which gold open-access academic publishers claim to conduct peer review and charge for their publishing services but do not, in fact, actually perform such reviews. Most prominently exposed in recent years by Jeffrey Beall, the phenomenon garners much media attention. In this article, we acknowledge that such practices are deceptive but then examine, across a variety of stakeholder groups, what the harm is from such actions to each group of actors. We find that established publishers have a strong motivation to hype claims of predation as damag

Atheists are not the first group that comes to mind when one commonly thinks of late nineteenth-century southern Appalachia. Richard Lynch Garner (1848–1920), a self-taught scientist from southwestern Virginia who moved to southern Gabon in 1892, sought to bind together conventional southern middle-class views on race and manhood with religious skepticism. Studies of unbelief in the United States have almost entirely ignored the South as well as the ways that freethinkers engaged with race, thereby leaving out men like Garner. Detrital garnet ages were compared to published detrital zircon and monazite ages from the same river tributary system. In the efforts to regularize America's official music, Sousa's achievements would have been noticed only by other military musicians. In 1889, however, he undertook a project that would garner his first exposure in the national press. Because the Marine Band was often required to perform the national anthems of visiting dignitaries, Sousa suggested to the secretary of the navy that the nation's military would be well served by a volume that collecte

This chapter concerns the insights of Elaine Morgan, particularly in her 1972 book, The Descent of Woman. In this book, she argues that all theories of human evolution to date were based on a male-centered notion of human evolution. The Descent of Woman was one of the earliest public rejoinders to masculinist narratives of human ancestry. An Oxford-educated Welsh writer for BBC Radio, Morgan chose as her target several of the most prominent books on human evolution circulating through the United Kingdom. By the early 1970s, in other words, evolutionary approaches to human nature were sufficiently current for other writers (and publishers) to deem them worthy of ridicule. Yet humor was a double-edged sword. Sarcasm might garner readers but for authors with no formal training in anthropology or zoology, like Morgan, maintaining a respectable public persona as a popularizer of science proved difficult.

This chapter examines the increasingly fraught press environment of the 1960s and its effect on the CIA, as the Cold War consensus slowly began to unravel. In an effort to garner support, the Central Intelligence Agency began more systematic efforts to provide briefings to members of the press. The New York Times Washington Bureau, first under James Reston and then under Tom Wicker, had a standing arrangement for briefings by the CIA. Once that arrangement ended, the New York Times published an unprecedented series of articles exploring the CIA’s activities. In 1967 a radical publication, Ramparts, revealed the agency’s decades-long foray into supporting private organizations and student groups to use culture as a weapon in the Cold War. The CIA survived each crisis, but its position continued to deteriorate, and there emerged a growing faction in the press skeptical of the agency and national security arguments against publishing stories.

Abstract:
Through the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–45) and the Nationalist–Communist War (1946–9), several Chinese Islamic pilgrimage delegations set out on their journeys across the Indian Ocean. Mecca was more than a simple endpoint destination. These travels encompassed transits and sojourns in cities in between Nanjing/Shanghai and Mecca, offering the pilgrim-cum-delegates venues of encounters with foreign dignitaries and diaspora populations. This chapter examines the published records and private diaries of members of the Chinese Islamic Goodwill Mission to the Near East (1937–9) who had been aligned with the Republican Nationalist Party, with a focus on their actions and rhetoric in Calcutta, Bombay, Karachi, and Lahore. Claims to anti-imperial Islamic solidarity and routes of the pilgrimage provided accessible channels for the Chinese Muslim delegates to conduct meetings with leaders of both the Muslim League and the Indian National Congress Party, while simultaneously attempting to garner support from Cantonese/Shandong diaspora populations and Turki refugees from the war-stricken Xinjiang Province. The practices and networks of informal diplomacy that consolidated in wartime would outlast the Second Sino-Japanese War itself.

The non-conventional and subtractive manufacturing technique of laser cutting — a beam directed method, is suitable for these applications. A Gaussian laser beam is directed at the material that melts, burns, vaporizes, or is blown away by a jet of gas, leaving a fine edge with good surface finish.
