The pursuit of competitiveness in the current scenario of the pulp industries is a major challenge for companies. Join the efficiency in the process of implementation of forests, silviculture, harvesting, wood logisticsand pulp cellulose logistics results in a complex matrix in industries with high production capacity. The combination of large areas of forests, modern and efficient plants, good capacity for movement of raw materials and the production and relentless pursuit of low operating costs are almost always divergent factors. Fit management teams to conduct detailed each process relating them to the specific characteristics of the regions in which they operate, thus defining the best ways to deal with obstacles studies. Accordingly, this study was undertaken, in order to identify concepts aimed at maintenance efficiency in modern industry, always directed to the new reality of the sector, which is the deployment of high capacity, far from large industrial centers factories. Additionally were raised core services applicable to this type of industry and examined the relationship of efficiency with this new reality. Finally we tried to study various processes considered relevant for new pulp and relate factors focused on maintenance of equipment and facilities, such that focal points can be identified with possible action taken facing the pursuit of efficiency. The analysis of these factors was taken by professionals with experience in manufacturing pulp, beyond the requirements of the search for literature review and empirical evidence for processing of proposals relations. The study confirmed the need for an efficient structure maintenance in factories and allowed us to identify the degree of importance of maintenance planning in maintenance efficiency in pulp mills.

Peers, Sarah Matilde Catherine. "A knowledge base system approach to inspection scheduling for fixed offshore platforms." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1998. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10052054/.

Full text
Abstract:
In the offshore oil and gas industry in the UK, one of the most common forms of structure is the fixed steel jacket type of offshore platform. These are highly redundant structures subject to many random or uncertain factors. In particular, they are subject to uncertainties in the load distribution through the components, and to time-varying and cyclic loads leading to deterioration through fatigue. Operators are required to ensure the integrity of these structures by carrying out periodic inspections and repairing when necessary. Decisions on inspection, repair and maintenance (IRM) actions on structures involves making use of various tools and can be a complex problem. Traditionally, engineering judgement is employed to schedule inspections and deterministic analyses are used to confirm decisions. The use of structural reliability methods may lead to more rational scheduling of IRM actions. Applying structural reliability analysis to the production of rational inspection strategies, however, requires understanding the inspection procedure and making use of the appropriate information on inspection techniques. There are difficulties in collecting input data and the interpreted results need to be combined to form a rational global solution for the structure which takes into account practical constraints. The development of a knowledge base system (KBS) for reliability based inspection scheduling (RISC) provides a way of making use of complex quantitative objective analyses for scheduling. This thesis describes the development of a demonstrator RISC KBS. The general problems of knowledge representation and scheduling are discussed and schemes from Artificial Intelligence are proposed. Additionally, a system for automated inspection is described and its role in IRM of platforms is considered. A RISC System integrating suitable databases with fatigue fracture mechanics based reliability analysis within a KBS framework will enable operators to develop rational IRM scheduling strategies.

Abstract:
Purpose: Lean is increasingly being applied within the aviation Maintenance and Repair (MRO) Industry to mitigate industry challenges. This Lean application is premised on its success within other industrial contexts particularly the automotive industry. Furthermore, many organisations within automotive industry have attributed their enhanced competitive positioning to the Lean application. Indeed, Toyota (a pioneer of Lean) present Lean as a key proponent to its global success. However, with literature suggesting that there cannot be a direct transference of Lean from one industry to another and with the MRO having distinct characteristics different from the automotive industry, this research seeks to present how competitive advantage can be achieved through successful Lean realisation. Design/Methodology/Approach: The status of MRO Lean engagements presented is first presented based on the syntheses of literature review and empirical study (facilitate by an industry-wide survey). The means through which the MRO realises its value proposition is established and the structural assessment of the MRO industry as it pertains to competitiveness is also defined. The role of Lean in enhancing the value delivery system to enhance competitive positioning is operationalised through a case study. Findings: Using Porter’s forces of competition, this research establishes the competitive MRO landscape revealing the distinct characteristics of the MRO industry and how Lean can be accurately appropriated to enhance competitive advantage. The MRO Value Delivery System (VDS) is also delineated providing the complete system within which Lean is to be deployed (as opposed to the prevalent limited application of Lean in operational context alone). The case exemplar successfully validates and operationalises the approach to Lean application within MRO to enhance competitive advantage. Research Limitations: A case study example was used for this research, and whilst the outcomes were consistent with the research proposal, it still requires wider validation. Practical and Social Implications: This research demystifies and helps MRO organisations in assessing their Lean engagements but also in provide a roadmap and informs their strategy in improving their competitive status through Lean realisation.

The purpose of this MBA professional report is to supplement the long and short range strategic development efforts of Fleet Readiness Center Southwest (FRCSW) by providing command leadership with an analysis of the current aviation maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) industry to identify potential expansion opportunities for FRCSW. Strategy development is dependent upon a solid, current and complete industrial analysis. An industrial analysis includes, 1) a definition of the industry, 2) a description of external forces acting upon the industry, 3) a description of the industry structure and 4) an examination of the key success factors that benchmark the requirements for a firm to stay competitive in the industry. These analyses provide FRCSW with the information required to leverage their core competencies to indentify and capitalize on potential opportunities in the industry. This study identifies emerging trends, presents projected forecasts, identifies external forces on both the military aviation MRO industry and FRCSW, and discusses those factors that are key to long term success in the military aviation MRO industry. The conclusions present a number of opportunities for FRCSW to explore in their effort to remain the Navy's premier aviation depot.

Norris, Shaun Peter. "The adequacy of traffic control measures during road works." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/11520.

Abstract:
Workers have the right to a safe working environment. This right is encapsulated in the Bill of Rights (1996) wherein strong emphasis is placed on the right to a healthy and safe work environment. The construction industry has been labeled as dangerous owing to regular incidents, serious accidents, and fatalities. Road workers’ safety is at high risk in road construction areas, as they perform their work activities alongside moving vehicles that are often large and sometimes moving at high speed. It was determined that very few secondary sources provided information regarding the safety of South African road construction workers. Therefore, the knowledge obtained from this study contributes to the body of knowledge on the subject matter. To collect data, three descriptive surveys were conducted on two different road construction projects within the Eastern Cape. The survey participants included engineering consultants, contractors, traffic safety officers, general road construction workers, as well as random motorists driving through the work zone. Further data was collected from a speed measuring instrument placed in the work zone of the Port Elizabeth. The findings of this research report indicate that road users are not cognizant of the risk to workers in the work zone and that signage and advance warning signs alone are not sufficient to slow motorists’ speed. A further significant threat to road worker safety, is plant operator visibility. This study recommends that government and construction firms educate the public regarding the risks associated with speeding through a work zone. Construction firms should use electronic speed measuring devices prior to the work zone to make road users aware of their speed in relation to the speed limit. To limit plant related accidents, companies should install sensors or cameras on the rear and side panels of plant, so that plant operators have all round vision. Furthermore, road workers could be educated on the controlled use of their mobile phones to reduce the risks associated with the use of mobile phones inside work zones.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Safety culture is of paramount importance in high risk industries such as railway maintenance, nuclear, offshore industries and aviation industry, resulting in the assessment of safety culture in these industries. The purpose of this study is to assess the safety culture amongst maintenance engineers at a leading airline in South Africa. The approach to the study was twofold. Firstly, an intensive literature study was conducted, followed by an empirical study. The literature study clarified and zoned in on the importance safety management system and the pivotal role of human factors in aviation maintenance and its contribution to safety culture. The Airways Technical Safety Culture Survey (ATSCS) was distributed to all the maintenance engineers employed at a major South African airline. The subsequent data, received from 113 respondents, was interpreted and then analysed using the SPSS statistical software package. Firstly, the responses to the seven scales of the ATSCS were examined to determine whether the data was suitable for factor analysis. The data was analysed using the SPSS statistical package. A principal axis factor analysis, with a Varimax rotation was performed on the data in order to determine which factors cluster together. Scale reliability was determined by making use of Chronbach’s coefficient alpha. The average mean of the corrected correlations between each scale item was also calculated to examine the internal homogeneity and unidimensionality of the different scales. Next, the items were subjected to item analysis. The mean, standard deviation, skewness and kurtosis were calculated for the sample scores of the ATSCS. The influence and effect of the biographical variables on the maintenance engineers’ attitudes towards safety were determined by comparing the responses of various employee subsets with one another by means of t-tests and ANOVA. The results of the t-tests revealed that ethnicity had a statistically significant effect on the safety attitude with regard to management’s attitude towards safety and safety training. The effect sizes were calculated to determine the strength of the relationship, and this was found to be of medium effect. The ANOVA results indicated that education, geographical location and fleet qualification have no effect on the safety attitude of the population. However, an ANOVA of work area revealed that the major maintenance work area differs significantly from the other two groups in five areas of the Safety Culture Survey. Finally, the overall responses of the majority of participants in this study were very positive with regard to the seven core factors related to attitudes toward safety. It is suggested that future studies of this nature should incorporate a larger sample consisting of cross-cultural carriers in the global industry. This will confirm the external validity of the present study and support the transfer of findings to other maintenance engineers.

The sugarcane industry is an important branch of the Brazilian agroindustry considering the major role of sugarcane cultivation in the country history and the prominent position that this industry has achieved in the international scenario. In recent years, this industry has faced major changes and challenges. Therefore, the use of methods to support decision making has become increasingly necessary to optimize the available resources and enable the analysis of larger data sets. The present study addresses the Maintenance and Tire Repair Emergency Services in the agricultural stage of the sugarcane industry. In order to analyze and support decisions in the Tire Repair System, the Hypercube Model, the Simulation Model, and the known Queue Models M/M/m and M/G/m were developed or adapted using data from a case study conducted in a sugar and alcohol mill with centralized servers. In addition, an alternative scenario with decentralized servers was also investigated, and it showed better results in terms of performance measures compared to those of the original scenario. Extensions of the Hypercube Model, the Approximated Hypercube Model and the Simulation Models were developed to analyze and support decisions in the Maintenance Service System. At first, an illustrative example was used to address the issues of priority queue, partial backup, and differentiated service rates between the hypercube states and the states of the tail. Subsequently, experiments using these models and the case study data were conducted. An alternative scenario including one more server was also studied, and it showed better results than those of the original scenario, especially in terms of travel times. The present study shows that the adaptations and extensions of the hypercube model and the simulation models developed to treat Maintenance and Tire Repair Emergency Systems in sugarcane mills have proven to be effective approaches for these systems planning and analysis. The results of this study indicate that the models developed and adapted are suitable for application in sugarcane industries.

Abstract:
In the pulp- and paper industry the human dimension indesign of information systems has been underestimated andoverlooked. Research indicates that there is a gap concerninguser involvement in the maintenance phase. Therefore, thepurpose of the study is to investigate how user involvementin the maintenance phase affects the user satisfaction, withinthe pulp and paper industry. The study has a deductiveapproach with a qualitative method. A relations model wasdesigned based on the theoretic framework, the modelshows five important factors in user involvement that affectsuser satisfaction; the users opportunity to be involved, the usersinfluence, communication between user and developer, the usersattitude towards the system and organization and managementculture. We interviewed 8 users of the system PaperLine, intwo different work groups and factories. The analysisshowed that the central factor was communication betweenuser and IT-staff, since this was relevant for all the areas of thestudy. The organization and management culture need toactively encourage involvement in the system developmentwork to give the user the opportunity to get involved, this willthen increase the users influence which in turn will lead to theusers positive attitude towards the system. The findingsresulted in a new model called K-OLMII, which shows theeffect user involvement has on user satisfaction in themaintenance phase, through identified factors for the successof user involvement.

Abstract:
During the useful life of an industrial plant, the failure occurrence follows an exponential distribution. However, the aging process in an industrial plant generates an increase of the failure number. The failure probability is a rating for the maintenance stopping process. In this paper, an statistical method for the assessment of the failure probability as a function of the operational time, based on the non-Markovian theory, is presented. Two maintenance conditions are addressed: In the first one, the old parts are utilized, after the repair this condition being called as good as old; in the second one the old parts are substituted by brand new ones this condition being called as good as new. A non-Markovian system with variable source term is modeled by using hyperbolic partial differential equations. The system of equations is solved using the Lax-Wendroff and fractional-step numerical schemes. The two methods achieve to approximately the same results, due to the smooth behavior of the solution. The main conclusion is that the system collapse depends essentially on the initial state of the Markov chain.

Buser, Deborah Elaine. "Occupational exposure characterization of vacuum pump maintenance technicians in a semiconductor manufacturing environment." Thesis, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/1957/34320.

Full text
Abstract:
In the semiconductor industry, numerous potential occupational exposures exist as a result of the diversity of chemical and physical hazards unique to integrated circuit manufacturing. The hazards associated with maintenance tasks are challenging because the sporadic nature of the tasks make exposure monitoring difficult. In particular, vacuum pump maintenance is hazardous due to the close contact with chemical waste by-products. The purpose of this study was to characterize the chemical and physical occupational exposures associated with vacuum pump maintenance (VPM) in a semiconductor manufacturing environment. The study population consisted of 9 VPM technicians at a semiconductor manufacturing plant in Oregon. VPM tasks were observed and prioritized according to potential risk of exposure. For each task studied, an exposure monitoring strategy was developed to quantify both chemical and noise exposures. Personal and area air samples of potential waste gases were conducted during maintenance tasks. All air samples were below established governmental standards. Detectable levels were found for three tasks: 0.040 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m) of hydrochloric acid, 0.014 mg/m of chlorine, and 0.08 mg/m of fluoride containing gases during tasks associated with the metal etch tool, polynitride etch tool, and tungsten deposition tool, respectively. Several bulk samples of waste residues collected during the tasks where corrosive having low pH levels. Representative noise sampling was conducted during a 12 hour shift to characterize noise exposures. Noise samples revealed that 43% of the samples were above the 80 dBA action limit thus requiring the VPM technicians to be involved in a hearing conservation program. Field observations revealed that there were many chemical hazards associated with waste gases and residues, therefore it is likely that occupational exposures occur even though they were not detected at significant levels in this study. In addition, there were several ergonomic risk factors associated with dismantling the pump during the maintenance activities. Specific improvements in personal protective equipment, general work practices, ergonomics, and engineering controls will help to reduce the potential for occupational exposures unique to VPM. Results from this study indicate the need to conduct in depth hazard evaluations of high risk populations such as the VPM technicians.

The automotive repair and maintenance industry in Kinmen is different than which in Taiwan due to its specific history background and geographic location. With the implementation of the economic cooperation framework agreement (ECFA) Chinese capitals become a significant factor influencing the equilibrium and future development of Kinmen’s automotive repair and maintenance industry. Thus, it is important to investigate the operational performance of automotive repair and maintenance industry in order to respond the competition generated from freer market. This research aim to investigate the operational performances of all 36 automotive repair and maintenance firms in Kinmen, furthermore, the structural differences of business categories, operators, and branches are also studied in the article. The results suggest no structural difference of operational performance between business categories and operators, yet significant in branches. Both number of employee and jack have significant performance contribution in different business branches. On the other hand, maintenance revenue and other revenue have significant impact on the operational performance of different business categories and operators.

The industry has faced increasing pressure from environmental groups and stringent regulatory requirement due to increase concern of environmental concerns and awareness from the general public. A company may face a serious lost because of these environmental issues and concerns. As there are various environmental regulatory are placed for manufacturing sectors, there are very few for the service sectors. However, a good environment image for service sectors will have much more impact on its market competitiveness than manufacturing sectors. In Taiwan, there has not be many studies on automobile service environmental impact and performances, however, as the life of cars has been increasing due to better technology, the automobile service is become a key for automobile industry, thus a comprehensive study on its environmental performance should be necessary. This study will be focus on the importance of environmental management, environmental performance evaluation and current automobile service status in Taiwan. This study will be based on ISO 14031 Environmental evaluation and use GRI environmental indicators, eco-efficiency indicators and FEM indicators system as reference. After the primary indicators have been established, this study will use Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to develop an environmental indicators for automobile service sector. This study will then evaluate and review each indicator and hopefully, this indicators can be a useful tool for automobile service sector, government agency and other interested group when evaluating the environmental performance for automobile repair and maintenance industry.

The standard of living enhances along with the rise of Taiwan economy has led to large increase in popularity of car use, however, the car repair & maintenance business in Taiwan has been through few decades with factories to stand in great numbers and hundred-school of thoughts to contend, there yet no leading factory that is sufficient enough to affect the entire industry. How does it find the blue ocean upon self advantages and core technologies for being one of the fragmented industries? Whether it brings other added values in addition to repair & maintenance service technologies and products? How to manage the interaction with consumers when the characteristics of that business is subject to geographical scope and report asymmetric information and low cost conversion between consumers? These are important issues for car repair & maintenance factories to consider in order to form the business strategies. It is found that current academic studies with regard to domestic car repair & maintenance mostly focus on customer relationship management, customer loyalty determinants, personality trait of technicians, knowledge transfer of technicians, quality of service & customer satisfaction and employment ability of workers related studies, while the business strategies with regard to car repair & maintenance business are less mentioned, therefore, the study expects to proceed discussion on factories in diverse business models. The study determined the business strategies of car repair & maintenance business in fragmented industry category in Taiwan as research object; introducing qualitative research to select sample factories in diverse business models and good sales results as interview objects to acquire model and competitive core values formed by business strategies of that factory through in-depth interview, in which the purposes of this study are summarized briefly as below : 1. Understand the manner of establishment for competition-cooperation relationship of this industry. 2. Adjustment on the business scope of this factory. 3. Accumulation and creation of core resources of various factories, with suggestions proposed to government, suppliers and subsequent researchers.

In the modern world maintenance organisations are exposed to rapid changes in equipment complexity and the maintenance thereof. Maintenance people have to adopt completely new ways of thinking and managing. If organisations and their management do not adapt to these changes and challenges they are destined to oblivion. Moubray (1991:1) states that: "Managers everywhere are looking for a new approach in maintenance. They want to avoid the false starts and dead ends which always accompany major upheavals. Instead they seek a strategic framework which synthesizes the new developments into a coherent pattern, so that they can evaluate them sensibly and apply those likely to be of most value to them and their companies" One of the viable alternative business strategies and maintenance approaches in dealing with equipment complexity and hence the management thereof, is by means of maintenance outsourcing and contract setting. If done correctly it reduces the risk of organisations and increases flexibility. During outsourcing initiatives organisations will look for benefits such as improvement of its profit margins by means of inventory reductions, improved reliability, maintenance efficiency and expert skills maintaining their assets. Coetzee (1997:24) explain that the task of the maintenance function is "to support the production process with adequate levels of availability, reliability and operability at an acceptable cost". The same principles apply in adherence to the maintenance contracts where the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) or contractor also needs to support the customer with the adequate levels of availability, reliability and operability at defined costs. This can only be achieved by quality maintenance; "the right level of maintenance performed at the right time to the right equipment by workmen able and willing to deliver quality workmanship and using correct task specifications" (Coetzee, 2000a). The method used in maintenance outsourcing negotiation and binding agreements between the organisation and the contractor is a Repair and Olivier-2008 Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering - UJ Maintenance Contract; commonly known as R+M or MARC contracts. Essentially a Repair and Maintenance contract is the outsourcing of a long term Service Level Agreement (SLA) or maintenance project, normally to the OEM, or its authorised service organisation. "A maintenance and repair contract is a contractual agreement between the OEM (original equipment manufacturer), or contractor, and the equipment owner or user, where the OEM or contractor carries out all maintenance and repair activities at a guaranteed rate per hour" (Lugtigheid, et al. 2007). When organisations adapt outsourcing as a business strategy, it creates a framework of uncertainty and risk to Original Equipment Manufactures and/or maintenance contractors who has to perform the maintenance services. The focus of manufacturing and selling is thus disrupted by the challenge of the unknown playgrounds of competitiveness

In Taiwan, transportation industry plays an important role in transporting passengers and cargos. Due to offshoring of manufacturing industry, decreasing demand of import and export, and rising of operating costs in the transport operators, most of transport operators just hold balance between making either a profit or a loss, and even need to reduce their fleet size. In passenger transport market, a new choice offered by high-speed rail seriously struck against the road traffic volume. Though increasing tourists from China due to the relaxation of travel regulation have boosted the demand gradually, transport operators end up unprofitably because of intense competition among travel agents. The transportation industry is now at a highly competitive state, thus requirements of improving vehicle uptime and greater emphasis on driving safety have become more important to operators to reduce operational costs and risks and enhance profitability. The research chose the repair and maintenance (R&M) services of heavy vehicles as the research topic because it greatly affects vehicle uptime and driving safety. We reviewed the performance-based logistics (PBL) literature first, and then compared the differences between PBL which is developed by Swedish heavy vehicle suppliers, and the traditional R&M mode used by Taiwanese transport operators according to critical factors when introducing PBL through a case study research approach. Furthermore, we assessed the feasibility of the PBL application model in Taiwan, and offer the directions key stakeholders in Taiwan should follow if PBL model is to be introduced successfully. After collection of secondary data and manager interviews of four cases in different trasnport sectors, a qualitative triangulation analysis is carried out to get more complete and in-depth understanding of the business models of these cases with particular focus on R&M activities. Next, we explored the PBL application feasibility in Taiwan and assessed, based on critical factors affecting PBL model implementation proposed by Agndal et al (2013), the obstacles that might hinder the application of PBL model by case companies. Finally, the development of PBL model in Taiwan transportation industry is explored. In the following, the research findings and results are summarized: 1. There are major differences in R&M operations between Sweden and Taiwan. The former puts great attention on traffic management and driving safety; the latter hands over maintenance jobs to private workshop instead, which makes the vehicle quality unstable. Swedish vehicle suppliers often offer customized contract services based on corporate culture, working conditions and vehicle usage characteristics, and used the vehicle performance as valuation standards; while vehicle suppliers in Taiwan still provide traditional repair and maintenance contracts to transport operators. 2.As to the repair and maintenance models in case companies, most of them use the services of the workshop ran by vehicle suppliers to make sure the quality of vehicles, showing Taiwanese transport operators’ increasing emphasis on the management of the vehicle fleet. In the freight market in Taiwan, the PBL model has been started by D vehicle suppliers. Compared to S vehicle suppliers, D vehicle suppliers is very positive both in developing a comprehensive repair and maintenance facility network and communicating this advanced service concept to the customers. In the future, the number of companies which is willing to adopt heavy vehicle R&M PBL model is expected to increase. 3.More and more transport operators start to emphasize operating vehicle quality in Taiwan. They have carried out preventive driver training and manage R&M operations with intensive attention. If R&M PBL model is introduced by operators, the key portion of fleet management is meant to outsource to the vehicle supplier. It could be a barrier if operators and suppliers do not take long term perspective and develop strategic partnerships. On the other hand, Taiwan’s Europe-based vehicle suppliers must understand the current situation in operators and carry out in-depth analysis with their repair and maintenance data. This might be another barrier due to the need and lack of capable specialist to develop proper analytical model to analyze trade-offs for introducing PBL model. Besides, it is a complicate task to develop a right pricing mechanism for PBL R&M service acceptable to both operators and suppliers. These potential barriers increase the complexity when in the PBL development process, as well as reduce the willingness of both parties to adopt PBL model in Taiwan.

"An evaluation and assessment of ship repair opportunities for South Africa using the Port of Durban as a case study in an attempt to develop a framework plan for the ship repair industry in the Port of Durban." Thesis, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/4331.

Abstract:
Over the last couple of years the ship repair industry in South Africa and in particular Durban has expanded significantly and the potential and opportunities for growth are still significant. This should be regarded as a positive sign for the industry that is currently enjoying a high level of demand for its services. This in turn has far reaching economic impacts upstream in the economy in terms of employment, revenue and income generation. The opportunities currently presented to the industry in the Port of Durban are vast and require exploitation. The Port of Durban, however, has physical constraints that are at present being addressed, but also structural and operational inefficiencies that hamper the full exploitation of such opportunities. The absence of a Development Framework Plan, in which these opportunities can be exploited, further aggravates the situation, much to the frustration of local ship repairers. This dissertation seeks to evaluate and assess opportunities currently presented to the industry in the Port of Durban. It further seeks to put a framework in place to best exploit such opportunities.

Winter, Brett. "A case study determining the relevance of motor body repairs focusing on niche markets outside the insurance industry, to establish a position of competitive advantage." Thesis, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/2804.

Abstract:
When one thinks of motor vehicle accident damage repairs, one often thinks of unscrupulous operators and a scurrilous industry. While this is regrettably often the case, there is a counterpoint, being the significant number of motor body repair firms that have invested significant sums in establishing accredited and certified motor body repair outlets, and who offer a premium service. The industry is one that is regulated by the South African Motor Body Repair Association, a body that seeks to dictate a standard of repairs by dictating membership eligibility relative to investment in equipment. Most unfortunately, this stipulation does not adequately take into account the flow of work that there may be from the motor vehicle insurance industry, and many repairers find themselves having to resort to nefarious means to ensure that business comes their way. The author of this report is a co-owner of an advanced major structural motor body repairer. Rather than stooping to unethical practices, the owners have sought to undertake a position appraisal and gap analysis with the intention of uncovering the strategic alternatives available to their firm. The firm has implemented the strategic choices highlighted by this report to good effect and has enjoyed enhanced revenue streams and business competitiveness as a result of undertaking this exercise. This report serves to document the highlights of that process.

Considering the high cost of maintenance, effective maintenance management have the potential to contribute to the profit of a petrochemical business. The complexity of the maintenance domain in the petrochemical business demands the use of information systems for the management of maintenance. The availability of correct, easily interpretable information about maintenance can therefore contribute to the profit of a petrochemical business. Management decisions are based on available information. The quality (accuracy and timeliness) of the information create more room for creative decisions in the maintenance department. A computerized information management system is a tool employed in the optimization of maintenance cost and a requirement for world class maintenance. This system depends on information of a high quality. It should be kept in mind that this systems is an aid to maintenance management and would never be able to replace the maintenance manager. The role played by high quality information in the success of a computerized maintenance management system point towards the importance of the personnel that maintain the system and those that provide input to the system. These personnel need to be highlytrained and should have the most recent technology available. Continuing development of the computerized maintenance management system within a company is necessary for the system to succeed.

The main aim of this study was to develop a strategy to link the informal and formal motor mechanic artisan communities in terms of qualifications. The current formal sector training initiatives for motor mechanics do not provide for or acknowledge the non-formal learning of the informal sector practising motor mechanic artisan. This research supports three main arguments: firstly, the informal sector serves as a reservoir of individuals who are practising the motor mechanic trade; secondly, the need was identified to integrate these informal practising individuals with the formal sector in terms of qualifications; and thirdly, the large motor industries have the authority to propose processes to assist in the integration of the informal and formal artisan training. The study was conducted among 16 experts representing the motor mechanic training environment. The findings indicate that the two sectors could be linked through dedicated recognition of the prior learning system backed by a process of gap training. The findings also highlighted the importance of having modules of employable skills to enhance informal practising artisans’ employability status. Finally, this study identified specific constraints that contribute to the shortage of skilled motor mechanics in general. This research confirmed that a strategy could be developed to successfully link the informal and formal motor mechanic artisan communities.
