Abstract:
This manuscript introduces a laser drive circuit for a light detection and ranging (Lidar) system. A Lidar system usually requires its drive circuit to provide laser pulses with nanosecond pulse width, >100 W peak power and high repetition frequency. However, the existing research results show difficulties in meeting these requirements. In order to reduce the pulse width and increase the peak power of laser pulses, special circuit design and component selection are used to optimize the parasitic parameters of the drive circuit, and GaN devices are used to increase the switching speed. The characteristics of laser pulses are tested under different input voltage, pulse per second and switch conducting time. Meanwhile, the reasons for the changes in these characteristics are analyzed and explained. In order to meet the requirements of the Lidar system to detect targets at different distances, a modulation method to change the peak power of the laser pulse is proposed. In our experiment, ideally, the peak power of the laser pulse reaches 135 W, and the pulse width is less than 2 ns at a pulse per second rate of 400 kHz.

Abstract:
The French food-based dietary guidelines recommend eating pulses at least twice a week and to reduce meat consumption. This study assessed the impact on the sustainability characteristics (nutrition, cost, environment) of individual diets of meeting the pulse guideline. Dietary data of 2028 adults from the Esteban survey were completed with the nutritional content (considering bioavailability on iron, zinc and protein), price and environmental impacts of foods. When the pulse guideline (i.e., 57 g/day) was not met, two substitution scenarios raised the quantity of pulses to the recommended level, in replacement of an equivalent portion of (i) starches or (ii) meat. Only 9.6% of the participants reached the pulse guideline. Diet sustainability characteristics improved with the meat scenario (nutritional indicators improved; diet cost, greenhouse gas emissions and acidification decreased), while several indicators deteriorated with the starches scenario. Zinc available for absorption slightly decreased in both scenarios while iron available for absorption decreased in the meat scenario only. Increasing pulse consumption to two portions/week could modestly improve the sustainability of diets when pulses replace meat but not starches. Cultural acceptability of that substitution still needs to be proven, and iron and zinc status of individuals at risk of deficiency should be monitored.

This article highlights key points of the Mechanical Engineering Global Summit. According to the participants, much of the future for mechanical engineers will involve integrating systems of all kinds. Throughout the discussions at the meeting, numerous comments concerned the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of engineering practice. Experts believe that vertical farms, for instance, could use hydroponics and other means to take farming indoors, where it could be carried out in multitiered structures. If technology like this could be made practical, it could multiply the area available for agriculture. A multibillion-dollar experiment in sustainable living has been proposed for the United Arab Emirates. The initiative hopes to create a high-tech city that will have zero emissions and be entirely self-sustaining. One of the proposals is to restructure engineering education and to prepare engineers the way lawyers and doctors are trained: a four-year liberal arts education in preparation for the professional degree in postgraduate study.

Abstract Pulse trawling is currently the most promising alternative for conventional beam trawls targeting sole and shrimp, meeting both the fisher's aspirations and the need for more environmentally friendly fishing techniques. Before electrotrawling can be further developed and implemented on a wider scale, however, more information is needed about the effects of electrical pulses on marine organisms. The organisms used in the present experiments were brown shrimp (Crangon crangon L.) and king ragworm (Alita virens S.) as model species for crustaceans and polychaetes, respectively. These animals were exposed to a homogeneously distributed electrical field with varying values of the following parameters: frequency (5–200 Hz), electrical field strength (150–200 V m−1), pulse polarity, pulse shape, pulse duration (0.25–1 ms), and exposure time (1–5 s). The goal of this study was to determine the range of safe pulses and thereby also to evaluate the effect of the pulses already being used on commercial electrotrawls. Behaviour during and shortly after exposure, 14-d mortality rates, and gross and histological examination were used to evaluate possible effects. The vast majority of shrimp demonstrated a tail flip response when exposed to electric pulses depending on the frequency, whereas ragworm demonstrated a squirming reaction, independent of the frequency. No significant increase in mortality or injuries was encountered for either species within the range of pulse parameters tested. Examination of the hepatopancreas of shrimp exposed to 200 V m−1 revealed a significantly higher severity of an intranuclear baculoform virus infection. These data reveal a lack of irreversible lesions in ragworm and shrimp as a direct consequence of exposure to electric pulses administered in the laboratory. Despite these promising results, other indirect effects cannot be ruled out and further research hence is warranted.

Abstract:
This article explores a number-based comparative logic unfolding around a particular kind of meeting in a social work setting: a daily and short gathering referred to as a “pulse meeting”. At such meetings, staff gather around a whiteboard visualizing individual statistics in terms of the number of client meetings performed or assistance decisions made. The statistics function as a basis for further division of work tasks. As such, it is a particular way of representing what social workers do at work. Ethnographic fieldwork conducted in the social services revealed how such openly exposed individual performance and the related number-based comparative logic can trump alternative logics ranging from the overall collective performance, competing views on clients’ needs and efficiency, and the social worker’s sense of professionalism. When participants of the study compared themselves to each other and in relation to standards and goals, certain conclusions were drawn about what should be done by whom and in what order. Such conclusions became embedded in an objectivity status difficult for anyone to argue against. Finally, the number-based logic also found its way into the counter-practices formulated by social workers unsatisfied with what was visualized on the whiteboard.

In this paper, sets of experiments are carried out on the difficult-to-machine nickel-based superalloy based on the principle of micro electrochemical milling with nanosecond pulse current. First, an experimental system for meeting the requirements of the EMM process is established. Second, sets of experiments are carried out to investigate the influence of some of the predominant electrochemical process parameters, such as machining voltage, pulse on time, and electrolyte concentration, on machining accuracy. Finally, using the optimization parameters, a series of 2D and 3D micro structures have been successfully obtained.

Its ability to provide throwing power deep within through holes with aspect ratios as high as 30:1 is well established. This technology has long been thought of as a high technology, high cost, specialty process applicable only to high end products. This paper will discuss the advantages that pulse plating offers over conventional DC copper plating in high volume production applications for panels with aspect ratios of up to 12:1. These advantages are reduced plating time, increased throughput, and reduced plated copper thickness on the panel surface while meeting minimum in-hole copper thickness requirements.

The photonic crystal fibre (PCF) is a unique medium giving us the opportunity to perform experiments in carefully chosen regimes with precision and control. Using PCFs, we can perform analogue gravity experiments to study the physics of Hawking radiation and related processes such as resonant radiation. We discuss the similarities and differences between these processes and experimentally investigate the limits of effects of this type, dis- covering a new regime of record efficiency. We measure a 60% energy conversion efficiency from a pump to a visible femtosecond pulse by the process of resonant radiation, and demonstrate its extraordinary tunability in wavelength and bandwidth. Beyond analogue gravity, these femtosecond visible pulses provide a desirable laser source useful across a variety of modern scientific fields. The conference has shown some important advances toward the solution of problems required for inertial fusion. We can tentatively categorize as solved, or nearly solved, the following problems: Marx prefires, Marx jitter, gas-switch prefires, gas-switch jitter, power combination of multi-modules, high-current beam divergence (in barreltype, Applied-B/MID diodes), and preheat. In addition, there are a set of mature problems with promising solutions: pulsed power accelerator efficiency, ion sources, and the electron kinetics of an extractor ion diode. Newer problems that were addressed at the meeting but still require considerable work include: impedance control of efficient ion diodes, diagnostics for both beams and targets, the further development of target design tools and their experimental verification, targetfabrication processes to make the nearly perfect targets required for inertial fusion, channel formation and beam transport in those channels at the power levels required for fusion, and pulse-shaping.

Acoustic communication is important in the reproductive behaviour of anurans. The acoustic repertoire of most species consists of several call types, but some anurans gradually increase the complexity of their calls during aggressive interactions between males and when approached by females. In these interactions, males may closely match the number of calls or notes in a sequence that a neighbour produces, thereby revealing their numerical abilities. Anurans are also able to discern the number of sequential properly timed pulses (notes). The temporal intervals between successive pulses provide information about species identity and call type. A neural correlate of this numerical ability is evident in the responses of ‘interval-counting’ neurons, which show ‘tuning’ for intermediate to fast pulse rates and respond only after at least a threshold number of pulses have occurred with the correct timing. A single interpulse interval that is two to three times the optimal value can reset this interval-counting process. Whole-cell recordings from midbrain neurons, in vivo , have revealed that complex interplay between activity-dependent excitation and inhibition contributes to this counting process. Single pulses primarily elicit inhibition. As additional pulses are presented with optimal intervals, cells become progressively depolarized and spike after a threshold number of intervals have occurred. Present microelectronic devices especially when including high frequency applications are in need of highly integrated metallization technologies. Silver is considered as a future interconnection material for such devices and systems due to its low bulk resistivity of about 1.6 μΩ·cm at 20°C. Conventional thick film metallization techniques on low temperature co-fired ceramics such as screen printing are only partly capable of meeting the requirements in terms of lateral resolution and precision. Furthermore, on advanced surfaces such as porosified composite LTCC, also thin film metallization techniques (e.g. sputtering) meet their limits due to a poor coverage and hence, a low electrical conductivity. In this study, it is shown, that bipolar pulse plating of silver is capable of bridging the pores of the surface of the porosified substrate without penetrating them. The plated metallizations feature very fine grains with an average diameter of approx. 90 nm and a maximum up to 250 nm. The film resistivity being measured directly during annealing decreases at elevated temperatures above 90°C in air. Compared to the bulk value, the film resistivity of the ‘as deposited’ electroplated silver is increased, but can be improved down to 2 μΩ·cm with a TCR of 4.1·10−3 K−1 at 20°C by a subsequent annealing treatment at 500°C for 5 h in air. Since there is no measureable difference in resistivity between the galvanic silver deposited on non-porosified or porosified LTCC detected, the findings qualify the bipolar pulsed silver plating as an excellent choice for metalizing porosified LTCC substrates.

Abstract:
Background: Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic disease with often fatal vascular events. In addition to traditional cardiovascular risk factors, disease-specific elements contribute to this cardiovascular mortality. The aim of this study was to assess arterial stiffness in rheumatoid arthritis and to determine the factors involved.Methods: We have recruited the black African patients followed in rheumatology and had rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis. Only patients between 18 and 60 years and meeting the American College of Rheumatology criteria were included. All controls were healthy. We evaluated the propagation velocity of the pulse wave finger-toe (PWVft) measured by the pOpmètre®.Results: Present study shows that the PWVft was significantly elevated in over half of patients (55.10%). Besides, the mean patients PWVft was significantly higher than that of the control (respectively 9.40±0.51 and 7.22±0.33 p=0.001). In the patients, no factor was significantly involved in the arterial stiffness, but cons in the control group, the PWVft was significantly correlated with age (p=0.023 and r=0.55).Conclusions: Rheumatoid arthritis patients had higher PWVft compared to controls. Due to the importance of its cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, arthritis requires a regular monitoring element as arterial stiffness, which is currently a major vascular parameter monitoring.

AbstractBody dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is characterized by excessive preoccupation with an imagined or greatly exaggerated defect in appearance, and often by related rituals or pursuit of medical or surgical treatments. The frequent comorbidity of BDD with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and the phenomenological similarities between these two disorders suggest that they may be related. BDD reportedly responds to oral clomipramine (CMI).We present here two case studies of patients meeting DSM-IV criteria for BDD with comorbid delusional disorder, somatic type, to whom we administered pulse-loaded intravenous (IV) CMI (150 mg on day 1, 200 mg on day 2). After a 4.5-day drug holiday, both patients continued on oral CMI. As reflected in modified Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) scores, both patients' BDD improved by about one third within 4.5 days of the second IV dose. Improvement continued over 2 months on oral CMI, and comorbid major depression present in one patient remitted. By the end of 8 weeks of oral CMI, the patients' modified Y-BOCS scores had decreased about 55%, and their social functioning had markedly improved.As in OCD, pulse-loaded, IV CMI may produce a much faster response than oral CMI or selective serotonin reuptake treatment and can be well tolerated. This treatment approach to BDD deserves further study in a prospective, randomized controlled trial.

Hybrid sorption-membrane processes are an attractive alternative for meeting a range of water treatment goals in a single process that is compact and cost-effective. This study investigated the performance and optimization of a hybrid sorption-membrane process using powdered activated carbon (PAC) and submerged-style membranes for odor control. Specifically, this study focused on the removal of 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) from a Lake Michigan source water and investigated the effects of PAC dose, dosing method, backwash interval, and aeration. Adsorption performance was predicted using a mathematical model, and tested using a pilot-scale, submerged membrane system. Modeling continuously dosed PAC performance agreed well with pilot results, but pulse dosed PAC performance was overestimated by the model. Non-ideal mixing effects were identified as important factors in explaining the pulse dosing results. Pilot results with aeration and pulse dosing were also overestimated by the model. It is hypothesized that aeration disturbs the PAC cake layer that forms on the membrane, and thus eliminates the beneficial effects that this cake layer can have on adsorption. Extending backwash intervals from 30 to 180 minutes with continuous dosing increased the percent removal of 2-MIB by up to 30% in both the model predictions and pilot results. This study highlights some important considerations in the design of full-scale systems and future mathematical models.

Abstract:
The FLASHForward experimental facility is a high-performance test-bed for precision plasma wakefield research, aiming to accelerate high-quality electron beams to GeV-levels in a few centimetres of ionized gas. The plasma is created by ionizing gas in a gas cell either by a high-voltage discharge or a high-intensity laser pulse. The electrons to be accelerated will either be injected internally from the plasma background or externally from the FLASH superconducting RF front end. In both cases, the wakefield will be driven by electron beams provided by the FLASH gun and linac modules operating with a 10 Hz macro-pulse structure, generating 1.25 GeV, 1 nC electron bunches at up to 3 MHz micro-pulse repetition rates. At full capacity, this FLASH bunch-train structure corresponds to 30 kW of average power, orders of magnitude higher than drivers available to other state-of-the-art LWFA and PWFA experiments. This high-power functionality means FLASHForward is the only plasma wakefield facility in the world with the immediate capability to develop, explore and benchmark high-average-power plasma wakefield research essential for next-generation facilities. The operational parameters and technical highlights of the experiment are discussed, as well as the scientific goals and high-average-power outlook. This year marks a watershed in the design, production and operational use of Civil Marine Radar (CMR) as we know it. Tighter regulations for in-band spectral purity and out-of-band transmission, when coupled to a possible loss of S-band frequencies for both CMR and Air Traffic Control (ATC) radars, will seriously restrict the synergistic advantage of dual-band systems, as well as the form of new RF heads. There is a conflict of IMO requirements to still retain simple pulse radars to activate Racons and SARTS while also meeting these new stringent spectral regulations. Options are given for serious discussion amongst all concerned before it is too late.

Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations are used to explore collisionless shock acceleration in the corona plasma surrounding the compressed core of an inertial confinement fusion pellet. We show that an intense laser pulse interacting with the long scale-length plasma corona is able to launch a collisionless shock around the critical density. The nonlinear wave travels up-ramp through the plasma reflecting and accelerating the background ions. Our results suggest that protons with characteristics suitable for ion fast ignition may be achieved in this way. A single event causing a double-node upset is likely to occur in nanometric complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS). Contemporary hardened latch designs are insufficient in meeting high reliability, low power consumption, and low delay. This paper presents a novel soft error hardened latch, known as a loop interlocked hardened latch (LIHL). This latch consists of four modified cross-coupled elements, based on dual interlocked storage cell (DICE) latch. The use of these elements hardens the proposed LIHL to soft errors. The simulation results showed that the LIHL has single-event double upset (SEDU) self-recoverability and single-event transient (SET) pulse filterability. This latch also reduces power dissipation and propagation delay, compared to other SEDU or SET-tolerant latches.

The use of fiberoptic bronchoscope for endotracheal tube placement may reduce the haemodynamic changes associated with intubation. Objectives: To compare haemodynamic changes (pulse and mean arterial pressure) following tracheal intubation, using direct laryngoscopic technique with fiberoptic bronchoscopic technique. Study Design: Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT). Settings and Duration: Department of Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care and Pain management Military hospital Rawalpindi. The study was of six months duration starting from April 2008 to October 2008. Subject and Methods: ASA-I and II patients (n=160) undergoing surgery meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria.Informed consent was taken from all the patients undergoing the study. Patients were divided in two groups. Patients assigned to Group A got endotracheal intubation through direct laryngoscopic technique and Group B through fiberoptic bronchoscopic technique after induction of general anaesthesia. Pulse and Mean arterial pressure were recorded before induction of anaesthesia and three minutes after the intubation. Results: One hundred and sixty patients were studied. Eighty patients intubated through direct laryngoscopy (Group A) and eighty patients intubated through fiberoptic bronchoscope and it was observed that fiberoptic bronchoscopic intubation is haemodynamically safer as compared to conventional laryngoscopic intubation. Conclusion: The study concluded that bronchoscopic intubation provides better haemodynamic stability than direct laryngoscopic intubation.

Photoplethysmography (PPG) is a valuable technique for noninvasively evaluating physiological parameters. However, traditional PPG devices have significant limitations in high-motion and low-perfusion environments. To overcome these limitations, we investigated the accuracy of a clinically novel PPG site using SPYDR®, a new PPG sensor suite, against arterial blood gas (ABG) measurements as well as other commercial PPG sensors at the finger and forehead in hypoxic environments. SPYDR utilizes a reflectance PPG sensor applied behind the ear, between the pinna and the hairline, on the mastoid process, above the sternocleidomastoid muscle, near the posterior auricular artery in a self-contained ear cup system. ABG revealed accuracy of SPYDR with a root mean square error of 2.61% at a 70–100% range, meeting FDA requirements for PPG sensor accuracy. Subjects were also instrumented with SPYDR, as well as finger and forehead PPG sensors, and pulse rate (PR) and oxygen saturation (SpO2) were measured and compared at various reduced oxygen profiles with a reduced oxygen breathing device (ROBD). SPYDR was shown to be as accurate as other sensors in reduced oxygen environments with a Pearson’s correlation >93% for PR and SpO2. In addition, SPYDR responded to changes in SpO2 up to 50 s faster than PPG measurements at the finger and forehead.

AbstractDuring the “DBS Canada Day” symposium held in Toronto July 4-5, 2014, the scientific committee invited experts to share their knowledge regarding deep brain stimulation (DBS) management of movement disorders in three domains: (1) the programming algorithms, (2) the necessary team to run a neurosurgery program, and (3) the appropriate scales to better define in a more comprehensive fashion the effect of the brain surgery. Each presentation was followed by an open discussion, and this article reports on the conclusions of this meeting on these three questions. Concerning programming, the role of the pulse width and the switching off of the stimulation at night for thalamic stimulation for the control of tremor have been discussed. The algorithms proposed in the literature for programming in Parkinson’s disease (PD) need validation. In dystonia, the use of monopolar vs bipolar parameters, the use of low vs high frequencies and the use of smaller versus larger pulse widths all need to be examined properly. Concerning the necessary team to run a neurosurgical program, recommendations will follow the suggestions for standardized outcome measures. Regarding the outcome measures for DBS in PD, investigations need to focus on the non-motor aspects of PD. Identifying which nonmotor symptoms respond to DBS would allow a better screening before and satisfaction postoperatively. There is an important need for more data to determine the optimal programming protocol and the standard measures that should be performed routinely by all centers.

In order to reduce the serious impacts of industrial and agricultural wastes on the environment, raw rice husk and bottom ash were used as fine aggregates, while fly ash was utilized as a binder material in the production of unburnt building bricks. Two group mixtures were designed with water-to-binder (W/B) ratios of 0.30 and 0.35. The rice husk was used to replace 0%, 3%, 6%, and 9% of bottom ash content by mass. An experimental program was carried out on the brick samples at different ages from 3-day to 28-day to determine the main physical and mechanical properties of brick, such as unit weight, compressive strength, water absorption, ultrasonic pulse velocity and thermal conductivity. The microstructure of brick material was captured using scanning electron microscope technique. The experimental results allow to identify the effects of rice husk, bottom ash content as well as W/B ratio on the properties of bricks. Brick samples produced in this study had a proper compressive strength meeting the practice requirement and were classified as Grade M3.5 and 5.0 based on TCVN 6477:2016. At the use of 9% rice husk, the unit weight and thermal conductivity of bricks were really low (1.06÷1.08 T/m3 and 0.201÷0.216 W/m.K), they are conformed to be used in temporary construction and insulation structures. Fast ignition inertial confinement fusion requires the production of a low-density channel in plasma with density scale-lengths of several hundred microns. The channel assists in the propagation of an ultra-intense laser pulse used to generate fast electrons which form a hot spot on the side of pre-compressed fusion fuel. We present a systematic characterization of an expanding laser-produced plasma using optical interferometry, benchmarked against three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations. Magnetic fields associated with channel formation are probed using proton radiography, and compared to magnetic field structures generated in full-scale particle-in-cell simulations. We present observations of long-lived, straight channels produced by the Habara–Kodama–Tanaka whole-beam self-focusing mechanism, overcoming a critical barrier on the path to realizing fast ignition. In situ magnetic resonance (MR) techniques, such as nuclear MR and MR imaging, have recently gained significant attention in the battery community because of their ability to provide real-time quantitative information regarding material chemistry, ion distribution, mass transport, and microstructure formation inside an operating electrochemical cell. MR techniques are non-invasive and non-destructive, and they can be applied to both liquid and solid (crystalline, disordered, or amorphous) samples. Additionally, MR equipment is available at most universities and research and development centers, making MR techniques easily accessible for scientists worldwide. In this review, we will discuss recent research results in the field of in situ MR for the characterization of Li-ion batteries with a particular focus on experimental setups, such as pulse sequence programming and cell design, for overcoming the complications associated with the heterogeneous nature of energy storage devices. A comprehensive approach combining proper hardware and software will allow researchers to collect reliable high-quality data meeting industrial standards.

Purpose This paper aims to present an inverter with a current-source input for 400 Hz avionic systems to have a system which removes DC-link capacitors and presents a high efficiency. Design/methodology/approach A battery-powered DC link inductor generates a constant-current source. A single high-frequency switch is used to provide a sinusoidally modulated current before the inverter. The output of the switch is “unfolded” by a thyristor-based H-bridge inverter to generate an AC output current. The system uses a CL low-pass filter to obtain a 400 Hz pure sine wave by removing pulse width modulation components. Findings Simulations and Typhoon HIL real-time experiments were performed with closed-loop control to validate the proposed inverter concept while meeting the critical standards of MIL-STD-704F. Originality/value This current source inverter topology is suitable for avionic systems that require 400 Hz output frequency. The topology uses small DC-link inductor and eliminates bulky capacitor which determines the inverter lifetime.

Background: Men are underrepresented in weight loss and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) prevention studies. Purpose: To determine the effectiveness of recruitment, and acceptability of the T2DM Prevention Using LifeStyle Education (PULSE) Program—a gender-targeted, self-administered intervention for men. Methods: Men (18–65 years, high risk for T2DM) were randomized to intervention ( n = 53) or wait-list control groups ( n = 48). The 6-month PULSE Program intervention focused on weight loss, diet, and exercise for T2DM prevention. A process evaluation questionnaire was administered at 6 months to examine recruitment and selection processes, and acceptability of the intervention’s delivery and content. Associations between self-monitoring and selected outcomes were assessed using Spearman’s rank correlation. Results: A pragmatic recruitment and online screening process was effective in identifying men at high risk of T2DM (prediabetes prevalence 70%). Men reported the trial was appealing because it targeted weight loss, T2DM prevention, and getting fit, and because it was perceived as “doable” and tailored for men. The intervention was considered acceptable, with men reporting high overall satisfaction (83%) and engagement with the various components. Adherence to self-monitoring was poor, with only 13% meeting requisite criteria. However, significant associations were observed between weekly self-monitoring of weight and change in weight ( rs = −.47, p = .004) and waist circumference ( rs = −.38, p = .026). Men reported they would have preferred more intervention contact, for example, by phone or email. Conclusions: Gender-targeted, self-administered lifestyle interventions are feasible, appealing, and satisfying for men. Future studies should explore the effects of additional non-face-to-face contact on motivation, accountability, self-monitoring adherence, and program efficacy.

Abstract A recent meeting was held on March 22, 2019, among the FDA, clinical scientists, pharmaceutical and biotech companies, clinical trials cooperative groups, and patient advocacy groups to discuss challenges and potential solutions for increasing development of therapeutics for central nervous system metastases. A key issue identified at this meeting was the need for consistent tumor measurement for reliable tumor response assessment, including the first step of standardized image acquisition with an MRI protocol that could be implemented in multicenter studies aimed at testing new therapeutics. This document builds upon previous consensus recommendations for a standardized brain tumor imaging protocol (BTIP) in high-grade gliomas and defines a protocol for brain metastases (BTIP-BM) that addresses unique challenges associated with assessment of CNS metastases. The “minimum standard” recommended pulse sequences include: (i) parameter matched pre- and post-contrast inversion recovery (IR)–prepared, isotropic 3D T1-weighted gradient echo (IR-GRE); (ii) axial 2D T2-weighted turbo spin echo acquired after injection of gadolinium-based contrast agent and before post-contrast 3D T1-weighted images; (iii) axial 2D or 3D T2-weighted fluid attenuated inversion recovery; (iv) axial 2D, 3-directional diffusion-weighted images; and (v) post-contrast 2D T1-weighted spin echo images for increased lesion conspicuity. Recommended sequence parameters are provided for both 1.5T and 3T MR systems. An “ideal” protocol is also provided, which replaces IR-GRE with 3D TSE T1-weighted imaging pre- and post-gadolinium, and is best performed at 3T, for which dynamic susceptibility contrast perfusion is included. This work presents studies which demonstrate the importance of the very early heating dynamics of the ablator long before the ablation plasma phase begins in laser driven inertial confinement fusion (ICF) studies. For the direct-drive fusion concept using lasers, the development of perturbations during the thermo-elasto-plastic (TEP) and melting phases of the interaction of the laser pulse with the ablator's surface may act as seeding to the subsequent growth of hydro-dynamic instabilities apparent during the acceleration phase of the interaction such as for instance the Rayleigh–Taylor and the Richtmyer–Meshkov, which strongly affect the implosion dynamics of the compression phase. The multiphysics-multiphase finite-element method (FEM) simulation results are experimentally validated by advanced three-dimensional whole-field dynamic imaging of the surface of the ablator allowing for a transverse to the surface spatial resolution of only approximately 1 nm. The study shows that the TEP and melting phases of the interaction are of crucial importance since transverse perturbations of the ablator's surface can reach tens of nanometres in amplitude within the TEP and melting phases. Such perturbations are of Rayleigh type and are transferred from the ablator to the substrate from the very first moments of the interaction. Abstract:
Aiming at meeting the requirement of modularization for megawatt wind power converter, the paralleling structure of IGBT modules was designed. Fast transient response and current sharing capabilities of the paralleled IGBT modules were regarded as the main research object, the drive circuit and adapter plate was also designed. utilizing the new type of protection circuit on the adapter plate to ensure reliability of the paralleled IGBT modules. As one of the most promising technologies, Digital drive technology was applied as the conception of the driver, and the core of the driver is FPGA and A/D sampling circuit. Using digital driver had the advantages of good consistency pulse parameters, flexible software programming and high anti-jamming ability. The current equalization among the IGBT modules was verified by means of the field test. Based on the experiment, the characteristics of balancing parallel IGBTs' currents were better than previous designs. It is concluded that the whole design of the system was reasonable and can meet the demands of the engineering applications.<b></b>

Care during mass casualty events (MCE) has improved during the last 15 years. Military and civilian collaboration has led to partnerships which augment the response to MCE. Much has been written about strategies to deliver care during an MCE, but there is little about how to transition back to normal operations after an event. A panel discussion entitled The Day(s) After: Lessons Learned from Trauma Team Management in the Aftermath of an Unexpected Mass Casualty Event at the 76th Annual American Association for the Surgery of Trauma meeting on September 13, 2017 brought together a cadre of military and civilian surgeons with experience in MCEs. The events described were the First Battle of Mogadishu (1993), the Second Battle of Fallujah (2004), the Bagram Detention Center Rocket Attack (2014), the Boston Marathon Bombing (2013), the Asiana Flight 214 Plane Crash (2013), the Baltimore Riots (2015), and the Orlando Pulse Night Club Shooting (2016). This article focuses on the lessons learned from military and civilian surgeons in the days after MCEs.

BACKGROUND Prehypertension is common in adolescence and young adults and even normal blood pressure nowadays due to a marked increase in the sedentary lifestyle, job profile, psychological stress. Blood pressure (BP) in this age can linearly progress towards elevated levels of BP when associated with risk factors like body mass index (BMI). Along with lifestyle modifications, non-pharmacological interventions are also recommended to manage prehypertension and delay progression towards hypertension at a young age. Isometric handgrip training (IHGT) is emerging as a popular non-pharmacological therapy. Research has demonstrated hypotensive effects with IHGT in various sets when performed at 30 - 40 % maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). The purpose of the present study was to find the effect of isometric handgrip strength training (IHG) on blood pressure and pulse pressure in normotensive and prehypertensive population. METHODS An experimental study design where 26 participants meeting the inclusion criteria were selected by convenient sampling. They were equally grouped into normotensive and prehypertensive training groups after measurement of baseline BP. All of them performed five 2 - minute sustained isometric contractions, at 30 - 40 % of MVC, using 90 an inexpensive spring hand grip trainer, for six sessions per week for 2 weeks. MVC was determined by a hand dynamometer. Pre - to - post BP and PP were compared in the present study. RESULTS After 2 weeks, t-test and repeated measures of ANOVA revealed a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure (SBP) [Mean Difference 4, 9] and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) [Mean Difference – 5, 5] (P = 0.01) but PP did not change in normotensive (P - 0.64) and prehypertensives (P = 0.40). CONCLUSIONS Practicing IHGT using an inexpensive spring handgrip trainer for two weeks consecutively reduced blood pressure but not pulse pressure. KEY WORDS Isometric, Handgrip. Blood Pressure

Background Incomplete recovery from neuromuscular blockade in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU) may contribute to adverse postoperative respiratory events. This study determined the incidence and degree of residual neuromuscular blockade in patients randomized to conventional qualitative train-of-four (TOF) monitoring or quantitative acceleromyographic monitoring. The incidence of adverse respiratory events in the PACU was also evaluated. Methods One hundred eighty-five patients were randomized to intraoperative acceleromyographic monitoring (acceleromyography group) or qualitative TOF monitoring (TOF group). Anesthetic management was standardized. TOF patients were extubated when standard criteria were met and no fade was observed during TOF stimulation. Acceleromyography patients had a TOF ratio of greater than 0.80 as an additional extubation criterion. Upon arrival in the PACU, TOF ratios of both groups were measured with acceleromyography. Adverse respiratory events during transport to the PACU and during the first 30 min of PACU admission were also recorded. Results A lower frequency of residual neuromuscular blockade in the PACU (TOF ratio &lt; or = 0.9) was observed in the acceleromyography group (4.5%) compared with the conventional TOF group (30.0%; P &lt; 0.0001). During transport to the PACU, fewer acceleromyography patients developed arterial oxygen saturation values, measured by pulse oximetry, of less than 90% (0%) or airway obstruction (0%) compared with TOF patients (21.1% and 11.1%, respectively; P &lt; 0.002). The incidence, severity, and duration of hypoxemic events during the first 30 min of PACU admission were less in the acceleromyography group (all P &lt; 0.0001). Conclusions Incomplete neuromuscular recovery can be minimized with acceleromyographic monitoring. The risk of adverse respiratory events during early recovery from anesthesia can be reduced by intraoperative acceleromyography use.

The load acting on the actively controlled cylindrical shell under a transient pressure pulse propelling a moving mass (gun case) has been experimentally studied. The concept of using piezoelectric stack and stiffener combination is utilized for damping the tube wall radial and circumferential deforming vibrations, in the correct meeting location timing of the moving mass. The experiment was carried out by using the same stiffened shell tube of the experimental 14 mm gun tube facility which is used in part 1. Using single and double stacks is tried at two pressure levels of low-speed modes, which have response frequencies adapted with the used piezoelectric stacks characteristics. The maximum active damping ratio is occurred at high-pressure level. The radial circumferential strains are measured by using high-frequency strain gage system in phase with laser beam detection system similar to which used in part 1. Time resolved strain measurements of the wall response were obtained, and both precursor and transverse hoop strains have been resolved. A complete comparison had been made between the effect of active controlled and stepped structure cases, which indicate a significant attenuation ratio especially at higher operating pressures.
