Abstract The hardest problem in astronomy is to find the distance to an astronomical object. It is not possible to pace out the distance or extend a tape measure. Radar has been used to determine distances in the solar system by measuring the time required for a radar pulse, traveling at the speed of light, to bounce off an object and return to us. This method does not work outside the solar system because the time required for the pulse to return would be too long (8 years for the nearest star), and because the returned signal would be undetectably faint.

Abstract:
Laser-induced desorption of methyl fluoride from a polycrystalline copper surface has been achieved by either direct excitation of the γ3 vibrational mode of adsorbed methyl fluoride using a pulsed CO2 laser at 10μ or via heating of the copper substrate using a KrF excimer laser operating at 248 nm. We have previously demonstrated that at ultraviolet wavelengths, the reflectivity of copper is low enough that the KrF laser pulse of ~ 200 mJ deposits enough energy into the surface to desorb CO from either single crystal (100) or polycrystalline copper [1]. Time-of-flight (TOF) spectra have been

Abstract:
Computational tools based on probabilistic fracture mechanics have been developed to enable reliability-based fitness-for-service assessments of flawed girth welds. The same tools are readily adapted for establishing maximum allowable defect sizes to achieve targeted weld reliability. Sensitivity studies have shown that of the various input parameter uncertainties, measured defect height often has the greatest impact on the probabilities of both fracture and plastic collapse. A reduction in sizing uncertainty should thus dramatically improve predicted reliabilities. The increasing use of mecha

Abstract:
The objectives of this research are to figure out how solid state decouplers (SSDs) influence the surveys related to pipeline cathodic protection (CP) and provide corresponding field guidelines on how to mitigate the adverse effects of SSDs. Firstly, by combining the classical capacitor discharge theory and the equivalent circuit of the CP system, a four-stage physical model is built to explain how SSDs' discharge current pulse influences the CP related readings. From the physical model, we can obtain the following conclusions: (1) The driving force behind the discharging of an SSD's capacitor
