Opperman, Adriaan Jacobus. "Analysis of factors influencing the performance of a hydrokinetic coil pump." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1021041.

Full text
Abstract:
A hydrokinetic coil pump (HCP) is described by its name. It is a coil pump driven by the kinetic energy in flowing water. The hydrokinetic energy is converted into mechanical energy by means of a paddle-wheel. The coil pump makes up part of the paddle-wheel and together is called a HCP. The HCP floats in a stream of flowing water while tethered to the bank. The focus of the study was to identify and analyse the factors influencing the HCP. The HCP was then optimized for rural application. Data acquisition took place through experimentation on a full scale experimental platform according to a central composite experimental design. Variables used for the experimentation included; Stream Velocity, Delivery Head, Number of Coils, Discharge, Number of Paddles, Paddle-Wheel rotational speed Overall HCP efficiencies of up to 22 percent were obtained. The efficiency would drop as the stream velocity increased. Stream velocity has been identified as the most influential factor with regards to the variables analysed by this study. The HCP is ideal for rural application. The simplicity of the design ensures reliability as well as an effective water supply solution. The HCP is ideal for slow flowing rivers and can deliver up to 1190ℓ/h to a delivery head of 5m with a stream velocity of 1.2m/s. This is sufficient to supply a small rural community with running water.

Liu, Guang. "A photovoltaic-powered pumping system." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/30592.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis studies the optimal design for a photovoltaic-powered medium-head (30 meters) water pumping system, with the emphasis on improving the efficiency and reducing the maintenance requirements of the electrical subsystem. The reduction of maintenance requirements is realized by replacing the conventional brush-type permanent magnet dc motor with a brushless dc (BLDC) motor. Different BLDC motor control techniques such as position-sensorless operation, sinusoidal and trapezoidal excitations are investigated. The improvement in efficiency is achieved by maximizing the output power from the photovoltaic array and by minimizing the losses in various parts of the electrical sub-system. A microprocessor-based double-loop maximum power tracking scheme is developed for maximization of the photovoltaic array output power. Over 99% utilization factor is achieved for a typical clear day regardless of the season of the year. The system losses are minimized mainly by performing loss analysis and selecting most suitable switching topologies and switching components. Experimental results show that the combined converter-motor efficiency is comparable to those of high-efficiency brush-type dc motor systems.
Applied Science, Faculty of
Electrical and Computer Engineering, Department of
Graduate

Alzuhd, Tahir Hussein Hasan. "Pressure losses associated with slurry flow in horizontal pipelines." Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/14146.

Full text
Abstract:
The flow of solid liquid mixtures (slurries) has attracted much attention in research work because of its importance to industry. Prediction of pressure losses associated with slurry flow helps pipe designers select the correct pipe sizes for optimum energy consumption, equipment sizing and reliable operation of the pipeline networks. Many workers developed empirical correlations, but due to the randomness of the problem they seem of limited use in design applications because they do not contain an assessment except by trial and error, which is costly. The existence of more than one particle size poses more complexities to the slurry flow problem but it is in need in practical applications. The aims of this work are justified under the light of the observations on the state of the art in slurry transport. An experimental program is designed to highlight the effects of this problem through a predetermined set of test runs. The variables are grouped to optimise the number of experiments and to remove the effect of dimensions on the prediction method The test rig is built to serve the aims of this exercise and test runs conducted, results grouped and discussed for polyfractional slurries. A mathematical model is developed in the form of an empirical correlation. Statistical tests are employed to verify the goodness of fit. Finally, conclusions and recommendations for further work are listed.

Dawson-Amoah, James. "Gas-liquid mass transfer rates by gas pumping : agitators in oxygen pressure leaching systems." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29931.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent developments have indicated high oxygen consumption rates of about 35 g-mole/m³-min during oxidative pressure leaching. At such high oxygen consumption rates the mass transfer of dissolved oxygen at the gas-liquid interface may become rate-limiting. The objective of this study was to obtain an understanding of the gas-liquid mass transfer processes that take place in mechanically agitated pressure leaching systems. The classical reaction between sodium sulphite and dissolved oxygen to form sulphate at atmospheric pressure was used to determine the oxygen mass transfer rates in a 200-liter asymmetrical plastic tank, modelled after the shape of the first compartment of the zinc pressure leach. The effect of this asymmetry was compared with the work of Swiniarski who used a cylindrical symmetrical tank of similar volume. A number of process variables such as the impeller type and size, the impeller speed, the impeller immersion depth and the effect of full baffles that affect mixing were investigated. Also, the volumetric power consumption associated with the mass transfer rates were measured. The results indicate that the asymmetrical tank is at least 3.6 times more efficient in mass transfer than the symmetrical tank. There is a critical speed below which the mass transfer parameter, K[formula omitted], is almost zero and above which K[formula omitted] increases almost linearly with impeller tip speed. A simple energy balance model for bubble creation can predict the critical tip speed. It is shown that K[formula omitted] is enhanced at shallow depths, with a corresponding high mass transfer to energy ratio. The relative effectiveness of impeller types and sizes with regard to the use of power for gas-liquid mass transfer was established. Full baffles degrade the mass transfer rate at increased depth of impeller immersion. The results also add substantial support to the findings provided by DeGraaf [5] that: (i) The dimensionless correlations used in liquid mixing systems do not accurately predict dispersion rates by agitators. (ii) The optimum conditions for gas dispersion and the consequent generation of gas-liquid interfacial area are different from fluid mixing. (iii) The classical mixing power equations for impellers markedly overestimate power requirements during impeller gas dispersion.
Applied Science, Faculty of
Materials Engineering, Department of
Graduate

Wilkes, Kevin. "Rotordynamic analysis of circumferentially grooved annular pump seals with turbulent flow and inlet swirl." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/46444.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis an analysis is developed to predict the leakage and dynamic characteristics for circumferentially grooved turbulent annular seals used in turbopumps. The flow in the groove is modelled using turbulent shear layer theory and an entrance loss model is applied at the inlet and land regions of the seal. The governing equations are derived using Hirs’ turbulent lubrication theory. The equations are expanded to yield zeroth and first order perturbation equations for small rotor displacements about a centered position. The leakage and velocity distribution is obtained from a numerical solution of the zeroth order equations. The first order equations define the dynamic pressure distribution which is integrated to yield the fluid force reactions. The model predictions are compared to test results for smooth walled and grooved seals. The model shows good qualitative agreement with experimental test results for seal leakage and rotordynamic coefficients. Actual quantitative agreement is unresolved given the high level of experimental uncertainty in the test results.
Master of Science

Kleynhans, S. H. "Physcial hydraulic model investigation of critical submergence for raised pump intakes." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/20304.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Various design guidelines have been published over the past four decades to calculate the minimum submergence required at pump intakes to prevent vortex formation. These design guidelines also require the suction bell to be located not higher than 0.5 times the suction bell diameter (D) above the floor. Sand trap canals are an integral part of large river abstraction works, with the pump intakes located at the end of the sand trap canals. The canals need to be flushed by opening a gate, typically 1.5 m high, that is located downstream of the pump intake. This requires the suction bell be raised to not interfere with the flushing operation, which leads to the question – what impact does the raising of the suction bell have on the minimum required submergence? A physical hydraulic model constructed at 1:10 scale was used to determine the submergence required to prevent types 2, 5 and 6 vortices for prototype suction bell inlet velocities ranging from 0.9 m/s to 2.4 m/s, and for suction bells located at 0.5D, 1.0D and 1.5D above the floor. The tests were undertaken for four suction bell configurations with a conventional flat bottom suction bell, fitted with a long radius bend, being the preferred suction bell configuration in terms of the lowest required submergence levels. The experimental test results of the preferred suction bell configuration were compared against the published design guidelines to determine which published formula best represents the experimental test results for raised pump intakes. It became evident from the experimental test results that the required submergence increased markedly when the suction bell was raised higher than a certain level above the floor. It was concluded that this “discontinuity” in the required submergence occurred for all the suction bell configuration types when the ratio between the prototype bell inlet velocity and the approach canal velocity was approximately 6.0 or higher. It is recommended that, for pump intakes with a similar geometry to that tested with the physical hydraulic model, critical submergence is calculated using the equation published by Knauss (1987), i.e. S = D(0.5 + 2.0Fr), if the prototype bell inlet velocity/approach canal velocity ratio is less than 6.0, and that the equation published by the Hydraulic Institute (1998), i.e. S = D(1 + 2.3Fr), can be used where the ratio, as determined with Knauss’ (1987) equation, exceeds 6.0. It is also recommended that prototype bell inlet velocities be limited to 1.5 m/s.
Hierdie sluise is tipies 1.5 m hoog. Vier klokmond konfigurasies is getoets.

Lemmer, Edward Charles. "Wind-electric pump system design." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/2527.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MScEng (Electrical and Electronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
The aim of this study is to analyse the operation of a wind-electric pumping system (WEPS) as an alternative to conventional mechanical wind pumps for application in stand-alone water-pumping schemes. The steady-state as well as the dynamic operation of such a system is analysed. Through these analyses, practical guidelines are given in the design and sizing of the different system components to ensure efficient and reliable operation. Theoretical analyses are supported by measured results conducted on a small scale wind-electric pump system. The limitations involved in the design and implementation of a large scale wind-electric pump system are presented through a case study. It is firstly concluded that small-scale wind-electric pump systems have the potential of offering superior performance and flexibility to conventional mechanical wind pumps. It is secondly concluded that large-scale wind-electric pump systems are best suited, in terms of economic and practical feasibility, to pumping applications with low pressures and medium to high wind regimes at the turbine installation site.

Abstract:
Water provision in rural areas represents a significant challenge, especially within the context of resource and sanitation in developing countries. High set-up costs, lack of installation expertise and reliability issues, arising from fluctuating operational conditions, have prevented many people from receiving the full benefit of automated pumping systems. The specific aim of this thesis is to assess the feasibility of using a tunable, induced flow subsystem as a means of optimising the power utilization and performance of a centrifugal pump over a wider range of operating conditions than typically expected. More generally, the research presented is undertaken to reduce the high implementation costs and localised limitations of rural water pumps by developing the theory towards a ‘’one-size-fits-all’’ pumping system. The theoretical analysis of an induced flow centrifugal pumping system is presented, coupled with the analogous electrical system. The results of simulations performed using both systems are compared to experimental results, obtained using an induced flow subsystem (IFS) test rig constructed at the University of Liverpool. All sets of results demonstrate consistent IFS characteristics, identifying its capability to maintain maximum power point (MPP) operation of the centrifugal pump irrespective of load. Further, the experimental results reveal a boost in output pressure which enables the pump to achieve an improved hydraulic power and increased operating range over the same system without an IFS. It is concluded that, through the addition of an IFS, the performance of a centrifugal pump may be decoupled from its operating head, expanding its range of serviceable conditions and demonstrating potential to develop a ‘’one-size-fits-all’’ system. Ultimately, this could offer a cheaper and more reliable supply of a resource which is vital to life in any rural location: clean water.

Kang, Jane. "Pump design for a portable renal replacement system." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/39570.

Full text
Abstract:
Most patients diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) undergo hemodialysis. Traditional hemodialysis treatment requires patients spending three to five hours every other day while yielding the high waste level accumulated between treatments. These limitations in the current technology have spurred the development of a portable renal replacement system. The portable system will not only free the patients from visiting the clinic but also allow more frequent treatment that will lead to lower average waste level. To realize a portable system, the size and weight of hemodialysis system components should be reduced. This work analyzes the working principle of the pump and proposes a DC-motor and cam driven finger pump design. In addition, an analytical pump model is created for the optimization of the pump design. In vitro experiment conducted using the pump measured Creatinine levels over time, and the results validitate the design for the portable renal replacement system. The proposed pump design is smaller than 188 cm³ and consumes less than 4W while providing a flow rate of more than 100ml/min (the optimum flow rate for a portable system) for both blood and dialysate flows. The smallest pump of a portable renal replacement system in the literature uses check valves, which considerably increase the overall manufacturing cost and possibility of clogging. Compared to that pump, the proposed pump design achieved reduction in size by 40% and savings in energy consumption by 65% with the removal of valves. This simple and reliable design substantially enables development of a portable renal replacement system.

Abstract:
"This thesis presents a series of physical experiments and numerical simulations intended to determine whether the use of commercially available computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software may provide a viable alternative to the use of physical models for predicting the occurrence of vortices and swirl in pump intakes. The physical experiments were set up at Alden Research Laboratories, Inc. (ARL) of Holden, Massachusetts, using a simple pump intake model donated by ARL for use in this study. Swirl and velocity measurements and dye injections were used to characterize the flow in the physical model. Three flow conditions were chosen for the physical experiments because they demonstrated swirl and vortices developing at the pump intake. Once the physical experiments were performed, FIDAP, a general-purpose finite-element CFD package, was used to simulate the circulation patterns in the vicinity of a pump intake. The model configuration and scale were selected to simulate experimental conditions in the physical pump intake model. Some similarities were also identified in the locations of the models predicted vortex characteristics and the vortex characteristics that were observed in the experimental facility. However, the characteristics of swirl within the pump intake differed from experimental observations. Therefore, additional simulations were conducted to analyze the sensitivity of simulations to model assumptions. These additional simulations showed that the assumptions related to these model parameters have minor affects on the general nature of the predicted vortices, but do affect the predicted vortex strength. This thesis represents a first step in addressing the discrepancies between numerical and experimental results. Additional investigations are recommended to clarify the applicability of CFD to address pump intake problems."

Abstract:
Fluid power technology has been widely used in industrial practice; however, its energy efficiency became a big concern in the recent years. Much progress has been made to improve fluid power energy efficiency from many aspects. Among these approaches, using a valve-less system to replace a traditional valve-controlled system showed eminent energy reduction. This thesis studies the valve-less solution-pump displacement controlled actuators- from the view of controls background. Singular perturbations have been applied to the fluid power to account for fluid stiffness; and a novel hydraulic circuit for single rod cylinder has been presented to increase the hydraulic circuit stabilities. Recursive Least Squares has been applied to account for measurement noise thus the parameters have fast convergence rate, square root algorithm has further applied to increase the controller's numerical stability and efficiency. It was showed that this technique is consistent with other techniques to increase controller's robustness. The developed algorithm is further extended to a hybrid adaptive control scheme to achieve desired trajectory tracking for general cases. A hardware test-bed using the invented hydraulic circuit was built up. The experimental results are presents and validated the proposed algorithms and the circuit itself. The end goal of this project is to develop control algorithms and hydraulic circuit suitable for industrial practice.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Mechanical Engineering))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2011
Smart (SMA-Shape Memory Alloy) Technology continues to advance rapidly as engineers move closer to and understand better the industrial and commercial needs for SMA. As a matter of fact, all types of products, which exercise some type of control over their function, are rapidly making their way into the marketplace [36] Nonetheless, nowhere has been evidence in the development of a SMA impeller. Unlike traditional impellers with no control over their function and sometimes fixed angle of attack, this paper demonstrates numerical investigations using analytical algorithms (Matrix laboratory programming and excel spread sheet) and advanced computer simulation package, Engineering Fluid dynamics (EFD) into the feasibility of using a smart impeller to study the performance of a pumping system and the best angle of attack for a Shape Memory Impeller. Primarily, Bench mark data and dimensions are obtained from a standard centrifugal pump run on a FM21 demonstration unit. Using the same standard centrifugal pump, and keeping all other dimensions the same but altering the angle of attack, EFD simulations where made. From analytical algorithm and EFD comparison, it was evident that the best angle of attack is 12 degree at the outlet angle with respect to the inlet angle. From EFD results, it is palpable that, by increasing the angle of attack from 35 degree to 45 degree at the outlet there will be huge increase in flow rate by 63.47% There is also a slight decrease in the impeller Torque from 35 degrees to 42 degrees by 0.72%. It is economically feasible to work at an outlet angle of 42 degrees due to increase in efficiency of 62.1% and a drop in torque of 0.72% by varying the outlet angle from 35 degrees to 42 degree. Understanding how critical actuator design is, it should be suggested that any shape memory impeller should never be used in critical components without a prior history of thermal and mechanical loading. Therefore, a NiTi impeller constitutive model can be designed, with impeller blades made from NiTi plates, trained to remember its best angle of attack (Martensitic phase). NiTi shape memory metal alloy (plates-blades) can exist in a two different temperature-dependent crystal structures (phases) called martensite [9](lower temperature-normal pumping condition) and austenite [9] (higher temperature or parent phase-trained best angle of attack.)

Abstract:
Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The designs of pump intake structures are generally verified by means of a hydraulic model study to ensure the structure will operate without large air or swirl entraining vortices. This is an expensive and time consuming process. The popularity of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is ever increasing in the engineering world and the use thereof in the modelling of flows in pump intake structures is just one of the many areas of focus. The use of a validated CFD model in the design phase of pump intakes would be beneficial, and ideally would reduce the frequency of requiring hydraulic model studies. This study investigates the applicability of using a 3 dimensional CFD model as a design tool by validation with a physical model. A physical model of a simple pump intake was available and with a few modifications the flow conditions were significantly improved. The quantitative validation of the CFD model was carried out by means of comparing corresponding point velocity magnitudes. An Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV) was used in the physical model. The data obtained were successfully filtered to remove noise and other disturbances. The qualitative validation was done by means of photographs and observations. The photographs made use of illuminated tracer particles to identify flow patterns. The CFD model compares well qualitatively, but the velocity magnitudes are not yet sufficiently reliable. It is recommended that the CFD model can be used for qualitative studies, but future research should focus on the accuracy of the CFD model. Using higher resolution velocity measurements in the physical model by means of other types of instruments, a better comparison can be made, as well as enabling validation of the ADV readings.

Abstract:
This master thesis aimed to design a permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctancemachine (PMaSynRM) rotor for pump applications which were to be implemented inan existing Induction Machine stator. The machine were to be compared with a similarpermanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) with similar torque production in termsof cost and performance. This thesis goes through the theory of the Synchronous Reluctance Machine andthe Permanent Magnet assistance. A rotor was designed by utilizing existing design approachesand simulation of performance by use of finite element analysis. A demagnetizationstudy was conducted on the added permanent magnets in order to investigate thefeasiblity of the design. The final design of the PMaSynRM was thereafter compared to the equivalentsurface-mounted PMSM in terms of performance and cost. The performance parameterswas torque production, torque ripple, efficiency and power factor. Due to the lower torquedensity of the PMaSynRM, for equal torque production the PMSM had a 40% shorterlamination stack than the PMaSynRM.The economic evaluation resulted in that when utilizing ferrite magnets in the PMa-SynRM it became slightly cheaper than the PMSM, up to 20%. However, due to the fluctuatingprices of NdFeB magnets, there exist breakpoints below which the PMaSynRM isin fact more expensive than the PMSM or where the price reduction of the PMaSynRMis not worth the extra length of the motor. However, it was shown that the PMaSynRMis very insensitive to magnet price fluctuations and thereby proved to be a more securechoice than the PMSM

Abstract:
This PhD thesis is in the frame of project Innov'hydro, which involves five joint Grenoble INP laboratories with the CNRS and Grenoble Alpes and aims to review the assembly composed by the turbine and the electric generator. Within this frame, this thesis carried out in G2Elab, is dedicated to advanced control techniques for efficiently converting the hydraulic energy into electric power. When the hydro-electric plant is connected with the grids as a supplier, namely `PQ mode', it either delivers the exact amount of active and reactive power according to the actual demand or allows to exploit the maximum of the available primary resource. This thesis is targeting on the latter case: The machine-side converter confirms the optimal rotational speed to achieve the maximum power; the grid-side converter ensures the constant DC-link voltage, and to send the good quality power to the grid. A conventional variable-speed direct drive Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG)-based topology is implemented, it is composed of a hydraulic turbine, a PMSG, back-to-back voltage source converters with PWM interacting with the three-phase grid.A Variable-Speed Hydro-Electric Plant (VS-HEP) is a nonlinear time-varying system disturbed by various uncertainties. Thus, this thesis devotes more efforts to improving the control robustness and disturbance rejection ability. The contributions of this thesis are as follows:1. Hydraulic model and PHIL implementation• A reduced-scale hydraulic model is flexibly established for various laboratory operation conditions.• The dynamic model of guide vane actuator is introduced in order to take into account the effects of the induced dynamics on the whole electric performance.• Based on the flexible real-time PHIL benchmark in G2Elab, a variable speed hydraulic test rig is built, being adapted to the proposed reduced-scale model.2. Advanced control of high robustness and disturbance rejection ability• An ADRC-based speed controller is proposed to improve the speed tracking performance, thus enabling efficient MPPT operation. Besides, a torque observer is incorporated to mitigate the effects caused by hydraulic torque variations. Experimental results prove its advantages for VS-HEP application.• An enhanced ESO-based controller is implemented into DC-link control loop. It achieves higher robustness and improve control dynamics. And it is simple to design and employ for practical engineers.3. ESO-based synchronization technique• An enhanced ESO-PLL is proposed. The internal uncertainties and external disturbances in PLL system are estimated via ESO and actively compensated into closed-loop dynamics in real-time, which can achieve high robustness in dealing with disturbances.• A Generalized Integrator (GI)-ESO is proposed for system with high-frequency sinusoidal disturbances. A generalized integrator is introduced to estimate the high-frequency disturbance in the design.• A GI-ESO-based PLL is proposed for under power quality degradation issues (unbalanced voltage, harmonics, and voltage offset). The high-frequency errors appearing in the estimated phase can be eliminated by employing the GI-ESO.4. Optimal management of pumped-storage hydro-electric plant• A forward dynamic program approach is used to optimally manage the pumping and generating operation time for a hybrid pumped-storage hydro-electric system.• The profits for all operation regimes of variable speed operation and fixed speed are compared.• The daily profits increase compared with the normal operation mode, meanwhile, it can maintain the hydraulic restrictions and water consumption to local residents

The tеhesis is devoted to the solution of the scientific and practical problem of improvement of the water passages of the high-pressure reversible hydraulic due to calculation and analysis their hydrodynamic characteristics. Based on the review of the trends in the development of hydropower engineering in Ukraine and given the role of high-pressure reversible hydraulic machines in the United Power System, it was noted that the designing a new flow parts is topical task. Advantages and disadvantages of the existing methods for research hydrodynamic processes in water passages of reversible hydraulic machines were identified after their analysis. The results of the calculation of the hydrodynamic characteristics of the elements of the water passages based on the method of averaged dimensionless parameters using the example of reversible hydraulic machines OPO200-B-100 and OPO500-B-100 were demonstrated. The mathematical model of the hydraulic machine working process based on a block-hierarchical approach was used to study the energy balance in the turbine and pump modes of hydraulic machines. The influence of the geometrical parameters of the elements of the water passage on the performance was determined: how the angle of flow in the spiral casing (cп ), the height of the wicket gate (b0 D) and the shape of the wicket gate profile influence the value of the coefficient resistance in the wicket gate. A numerical study of the three-dimensional flow of fluid in the water passage of high-pressure reversible hydraulic machines was carried out using the CFD software. This program allows determining the character of the flow and presenting the fields of distribution of velocity components, pressure and streamlines. The balances of energy were compiled: for the OPO200-B-100 in the turbine and pump operation modes, for the OPO500-B-100 in the turbine operation mode. It is noted that the distribution of losses on the elements of the water passage is not uniform: for the OPO200-B-100, the greatest part of the total losses are losses in the runner (about 56%), for OPO500-B-100 - losses in the inlet (about 62%). The main points for determining the optimal operating mode of the reversible hydraulic machine are described. The modified inlet for low-speed high-pressure hydraulic machine OPO500-B-100 was proposed and investigated to increase energy performance of hydraulic machine. The spiral casing was expanded, the number of stay vane blades and wicket gate blades were reduced to 16. As a result of the calculations of the modified inlet, the obtained results showed that the second variant made it possible to better align the elements of the water passage and the hydraulic efficiency increased by 2 %.

Thesis for granting the Degree of Candidate of Technical sciences in speciality 05.05.17 – Hydraulic machines and hydropneumatic units. – National Technical University "Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute", 2019.

This thesis follows some previous work of the CRONE team applied to carsuspensions. It allows to purpose one car suspension, called CRONE car suspension, whichimproves the compromise between low frequency road filtering and car holding and thecompromise between hight frequency road filtering and wheel holding. To hold the wheel acriterium on the wheel holding is developed. This criterium can be used to analyse and tunedall kind of car suspension around the wheel pulsation. Moreover, to fight against thecompromise between the driver input and the raod input, a control laws is developed andapplied to a bi-state car suspension called hydractive car suspension. Finally, the influence ofthe car suspension tuning on the vehicle dynamic and more precisely on the ESP, ABSsystems is studied and illustrated with some first experiments

Govender, T. "Strategic issues for life extension of boiler feed pump drives at coal fired power stations." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/3433.

Abstract:
M.Ing.
South Africa is presently experiencing a power shortage problem. This has led to numerous investigations into generating needed capacity and finding ways of saving power where possible, in order to sustain an acceptable extra capacity of at least ten percent. This dissertation investigates the possibility of saving power consumed by the electrical boiler feed pumps through engineering management strategies. The technical system drive unit is considered as a case study and consists of the following electrical and mechanical components: • Boiler feed pump. • Boiler feed pump transformer. • Variable speed drive. The methods identified to improve the Variable Speed Drive (VSD) system reliability and obtain total efficiency are: • Technical evaluation of the system. • Engineering management tools including reliability and availability. • A strategic focus on reliability improvement. Technical evaluation of the system includes evaluating the condition of the existing system and possibly replacing it with the latest technology should the system prove inefficient. Engineering management tools such as Total Quality Management (TQM) and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) ensure that the plant is in a high state of readiness at all times. Strategic management issues in the broader context that influence reliability and availability management have been identified to improve productivity contributing to total organizational overall efficiency. One of the main research conclusions of the dissertation is that not only inherent reliability of a technical system is important but also the achievable reliability in the broader strategic organizational context. The research strategy was exploratory and included an integrated case study on electrical boiler feed pump drives.

Parbhoo, Meeshal. "A cost study comparing imported liquid pumps against locally manufactured pumps." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/10816.

Full text
Abstract:
M.Ing. (Engineering Management)
The purpose of this dissertation was to compare the local manufacturing of liquid pumps in South Africa against the importation of pumps manufactured on the international markets as well as also investigate the capacity limitations of the local pump manufacturers; the technologies available on overseas markets (in terms of electric, solar and wind-powered liquid pumps) and comparing the technologies to those available in South Africa. Five of the leading pump manufacturers were researched in this dissertation namely: KSB; Grundfos; Howden Pumps; Sulzer Pumps Africa and Warman Pumps. South African pump manufacturers are importing most of their pumps from international markets with the primary reason being to meet demands. By comparison, South African pump manufacturers are finding it difficult to produce pumps with equivalent or lower costs than the pumps which are produced on the international markets. Pump manufacturers on international markets offer greater cost savings for South African pump manufacturers which ultimately results in financial savings and a higher yield in profits. Many international pump manufacturers use advanced technology which makes the production costs of pump components as much as twenty percent (20%) less as compared to the South African pump industry. The importation of pumps is a method used to increase the local supply of pumps as the cost of the pump, including import costs, are not as costly as actually manufacturing the pumps in South Africa. While South African pump manufacturers manufacture pumps of relatively high energy consumption and monetary costs; they also produce standard conventional pumps which are required to supply the local demand. Local pump manufacturers were approached to find out exactly how they cope with these stringent requirements by the South African markets, yet still achieve the profits in the industry to remain afloat. Various pump forms were researched specifically relating to the pumps used on the South African markets with regards to their production costs, advantages and disadvantages (wind and solar pump technologies). Standard conventional pumps are preferred on local markets by as much as fifteen percent (15%) with newer technologies (solar and wind powered pumps) being preferred on the international markets. South Africa continues to demand standard conventional pumps (electric-driven pump) although demands for newer technology is on the increase. The international market’s production lines are mature and well established which results in a lower cost of production which leads to these pumps being of more demand as compared to newer pumps which are currently the preference. Local pump manufacturers can satisfy the demand and benefit from the lower importation cost of standard conventional pumps. The preliminary results suggest that the importing of pumps from international markets aid local manufacturers in keeping up with the demand and accquiring sufficient profits. Modern technologies such as solar and wind power is a growing maket in South Africa and is becoming increasingly common. The research approach used in this study involved targeting five of the local pump manufacturers in South Africa. Each manufacturer was asked a series of questions relating to the research questions in order to draw up conclusions regarding the problem statement and hypothesis. Findings from the conducted surveys were compared to the literature which is currently published. Findings show that local pump manufacturers are dependent on imports in order to satisfy the demand for standard conventional pumps rather than manufacturing their own and the use of newer technologies are increasing in the local pump industry.

Abstract:
M. Tech. (Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering) Vaal University of Technology)
Water is one of the basic necessities of life. In addition to being essential for the maintenance of life, this basic resource is a crucial requirement for combating poverty, hunger and disease in South African communities. In excess of twenty-nine percent of South African households do not have water in either their dwellings, or on site (source: 2005 RSA census data). This study documents an engineering solution to the problem of water pumping, utilising renewable energy (solar power) and readily available pumping hardware, configured via a structured design process. Resultant from the research, a software application has been developed that facilitates the design of solar (photovoltaic) powered water pumping applications. The selected design configuration of a nontracking, stand-alone, directly coupled system provides for the most robust and least complex design possible, making it imminently suitable for application in rural African conditions. Operation of the program is via a simple graphical user interface, with full and context sensitive help provided. It is tailored for use in Southern Africa and is provided with comprehensive databases of location dependant design information such as solar radiation, meteorology and magnetic declination data, together with expandable databases of pre-configured pump and solar panel hardware specification data. The program is manufacturer and component independent, with no affiliations in the choice of hardware. Design methodologies, together with a component matching strategy. Optimisation is achieved by a quantitative and efficiency 'best fit' analysis of the selected hardware components within the design context. Design output predictions are tabulated and graphed by month for a period of one year, allowing design visualisation. The application has been named 'South African Stand-alone Solar (PV) Water Pumping Design Aid', abbreviated as 'SAS-SWP' in its run-time form. The SASSWP application is illustrated in the functional overview provided in Figure 1.
VUT

Biscos, Cedric P. G. "Optimal operation of a water distribution network by predictive control using MINLP." Thesis, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/9015.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this research project is to develop new software tools capable of operational optimisation of existing, large-scale water distribution networks. Since pumping operations represent the main operating cost of any water supply scheme, the optimisation problem is equivalent to providing a new sequence for pumping operations that makes better use of the different electricity tariff structures available to the operators of distribution systems. The minimisation of pumping costs can be achieved by using an optimal schedule that will allow best use of gravitational flows, and restriction of pumping to low-cost power periods as far as possible. A secondary objective of the operational optimisation is to maintain the desired level of disinfectant chlorine at the point of delivery to consumers. There is a steady loss of chlorine with residence time in the system. If the level drops too low there is a risk of bacterial activity. Re-dosage points are sometimes provided in the network. Conversely, too high a level produces an unacceptable odour. The combinatation of dynamic elements (reservoir volumes and chlorine concentration responses) and discrete elements (pump stati and valve positions) makes this a challenging Model Predictive Control (MPC) and constrained optimisation problem, which was solved using MINLP (Mixed Integer Non-linear Programming). The MINLP algorithm was selected for its ability to handle a large number of integer choices (valves open or shut / pumps on or off in this particular case). A model is defined on the basis of a standard element, viz. a vessel containing a variable volume, capable of receiving multiple inputs and delivering just two outputs. The physical properties of an element can be defined in such a way as to allow representation of any item in the actual network: pipes (including junctions and splits), reservoirs, and of course, valves or pumps. The overall network is defined by the inter-linking of a number of standard elements. Once the network has been created within the model, the model predictive control algorithm minimises a penalty function on each time-step, over a defined time horizon from the present, with all variables also obeying defined constraints in this horizon. This constrained non-linear optimization requires an estimate of expected consumer demand profile, which is obtained from historical data stored by the SCADA system monitoring the network. Electricity cost patterns, valve positions, pump characteristics, and reservoir properties (volumes, emergency levels, setpoints) are some of the parameters required for the operational optimisation of the system.
Thesis (M.Sc.Eng.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2004.
