Medin, John T. IV. "The Grand Strategy: A Study on Hannibal’s Stratagem During the Second Punic War." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2014. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/935.

Abstract:
In this paper I sought to determine whether or not Hannibal Barca had a grand strategy to deal with the Romans during the Second Punic War. If Hannibal did have a strategy, I would try to determine what his strategy was and if it was actually feasible. I approached this question by looking into the background leading up to the Second Punic War, the primary sources explanation of Hannibal’s strategy during the Second Punic War, the logistical feasibility of the plan, and Hannibal’s movements throughout Italy during the war. In conclusion I decided that Hannibal did have a Grand strategy and that it was to alienate the Italian allied city-states from Rome in order to gain the logistical supplies and manpower to bring down Rome. In the end the reason that Hannibal lost the second Punic War is because he misunderstood the relationship that existed between the allied Italian states and Rome. This question is important because it sheds new light on the relations between Rome and its allied states. It also brings new questions to the foreground to try and explain what exactly was the relationship between Rome and its allies during this period.

Abstract:
The ancient city of Morgantina in Sicily was an important city during the Hellenistic age and probably member of a koinon (a union) under the leadership of Syracuse. Much research has been done on the city of Morgantina, but as far as I know, no study has had the aim to show what role Morgantina played in the Second Punic War. Therefore, this essay focuses on Morgantina during and after the Second Punic War (218–201 BCE). The main questions presented in this essay are what happened to the city after the war and what was the aftermath of the war? What happened to the people in the town and why were some houses abandoned and others not? To answer these questions archaeological evidence (numismatic material and buildings) as well as ancient historians’ narrations have been used (the historians used are Diodorus Siculus, Livy, Cicero and Strabo). The study argues that Morgantina might have been the last important free Greek town in Sicily (and possibly the very last) and that the city probably did not fight actively for either side, but might have provided Rome with grain and therefore taken Rome’s side.

Abstract:
Climate change is a problem that all human beings have to face together. Since 1997, the Kyoto Protocol introduced the three flexibility mechanisms to cope with this environmental issue, one of which is emissions trading, using a market measure as a solution for an eco-problem. It is a new trend in the field of environmental protection. However, the core of emissions trading contains risks, which is a concern for most countries especially under the present global situation. Thus, emissions trading has not been widely accepted by a lot of states as an environment policy. In 2008, the EU amended its emissions trading scheme directive and the aviation industry was covered by the new directive. In other words, every international flight departing from or landing at any airport of EU countries will be forced to cut down its GHG emissions by joining the EU emissions trading scheme. The amended directive entered into force on February 2nd 2009. The directive directly impacts the global aviation industry. The EU action has been criticized for violating the integrity of the International Civil Aviation Organization. It also triggered an issue with international law, regarding the conflict between international organizations. At last, both international organizations have legitimacy to deal with the GHG emissions trading for aviation. Focusing on a particular region, Asia, now an area more and more important to the whole world, economically and politically, especially booming China. However, in the environmental field, most Asian countries are followers, especially as their current priority is the economy not the environment. Climate change is not the main focus either. Even though the new directive of the EU will cover flights coming from Asia. Taking Taiwan, China and Japan for instance, each one stands for a character to examine the emissions trading policies within their legal systems. Taiwan is a non-contracting party, China is a non Annex 1 party and Japan is an Annex 1 party of the United Nations Framework Convention of Climate Change. What kind of measures can they adopt to fulfill the EU directive and to face the climate change issue in the cost-efficient way. Although, the GHG emissions trading scheme is not perfect, to establish an Asian style GHG emissions trading scheme is a highly doable measure. A GHG emissions trading market can catalyze the renovation of high emission industries to reduce GHG emissions and improve the efficient use of energy. Especially for developing countries in the Far East this is the key to opening a new era.

Oyewo, Ayanfeoluwa Olutosin. "Tug of war : a critical discourse analysis of Punch and Daily Trust newspapers' coverage of polio eradication in Nigeria." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1017787.

Full text
Abstract:
The resurgence of the polio virus in Nigeria following vaccine rejections poses a severe threat to the total worldwide eradication of polio. Vaccine refusals are a huge problem in Nigeria, especially in the North, which accounts for about 60 percent of polio cases in 2013. These refusals were informed by claims that polio vaccines contained anti-fertility properties that were designed by the ‘West’ to reduce the Muslim population. These claims and subsequent vaccine rejections culminated in the killing of health workers during an immunisation exercise in February 2013. This study is an analysis of the coverage of the polio eradication controversy by two newspapers- Punch and Daily Trust, following the killings of the health workers. Daily Trust is situated in Northern Nigeria, while Punch is situated in the South. The choice of these newspapers is based on the argument by Ayodele (1988) and Omenugha (2004) that the Nigerian press has been accused of escalating tension in the country because they view many aspects of the Nigerian reality from the lenses of religious, political and cultural prejudices. Because it is a text-based study, the chosen research method is Fairclough’s (1995) model of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), following a preliminary thematic content analysis. In addition to Fairclough’s model, the study employs textual analytic tools such as narrative analysis and rhetoric/argumentative analysis. The selected texts, which comprise editorials and news stories are analysed based on the themes identified during the thematic content analysis. The study concludes that while the two newspapers differ in their locations and stylistic approach to news, they are similar in their coverage of the polio eradication crisis. They both side with the Federal Government and help perpetuate the South versus North animosity thereby ignoring the intricacies involved in the polio eradication controversy.

Abstract:
It has generally been thought that Hannibal was a hostile individual and despised in Roman society because of his non-Roman status and his apparent tendency to be deceptive, cruel and savage. Yet, our understanding of Hannibal as a character is limited. This thesis attempts to address his characterisation through an examination of his night-time military exploits, and argue that our knowledge of Hannibal can be expanded upon by examining how Livy characterised Hannibal in his account of the Second Punic War. Furthermore, this thesis takes a fresh approach to Hannibal’s characterisation, considering Livy’s use of ‘the night’ in association with military activity, and revealing that Hannibal displayed traits that the Romans themselves valued. Thus, Hannibal’s character is developed through a nocturnal military setting, and he becomes comparable to Rome’s finest generals, including Fabius Maximus, Marcellus and Scipio Africanus. Similarly, it is also shown that he exhibited Roman military virtus in place of the traits traditionally thought to be synonymous with the non-Roman. By analysing the character of Hannibal in this manner, we reveal that in Roman thought he was an ambiguous character, whilst simultaneously highlighting how the Romans both perceived and used the night within the context of the army.

Abstract:

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Punk moved from a marginal subculture to an underground counter-culture -- hardcore punk -- which shared musical culture and sense of a communal identity. Local punk scenes grew, in part due to attention from mass media. New kids in the scene brought new tensions and attracted the attention of authorities. Two police incidents signaled a shift in the punks' view of themselves. I examine two punk scenes from 1975 to 1985 in Los Angeles, USA and Ljubljana, Yugoslavia by looking at newspapers, television programs, fanzines, music, and clothing. I show that a loosely connected group of individuals, self-identified as punk, became increasingly similar as the parent cultures put increasing pressure on punks.

Abstract:
Since the initial development, thousands of years ago, forging has faced continuous improvements, remaining as a modern manufacturing process, capable of adding important characteristics to forged products that are used in numerous applications. In the automotive industry, responsible for the consumption of approximately 60% of all forged products, the forging has proved to be an effective metal forming process in terms of mechanical strength specifications and productivity requirements. This demand for forged parts has stimulated the search for more robust processes in which the forging tool has a fundamental role to enable the production of larger batches without downtime due to failures. Approximately 70% of these failures are related to tool wear. This work aimed identifying, in an industrial environmental, the wear modes responsible for the degradation of the contact surface of a punch, made of H-10 steel. A series of punches was used for hot forging in a horizontal and automatic multi-stage eccentric mechanical press which uses water for tool cooling, during the manufacture of wheel nuts, made of SAE 1045 steel. Results were based: (i) on the analysis of the surface and cross section of six punches in a scanning electronic microscope, (ii) on nanohardness analyses and (iii) as well as on mass and dimensional variations. Results pointed to the punch wear in the first forged pieces, due to oxides transferring from blank to the punch surface. On this transferred layer to punch surface, have also found damage caused by abrasive wear and thermal fatigue.

Abstract:
In this thesis, a coin from the Hannibalic occupation of Taras is analysed and discussed. The method applied in the analysis is Panofsky’s iconological method, and the theoretical framework has been derived from the research questions themselves in dialogue with modern numismatic research.  The focus of the discussion is on the relationship between the coin and its historical context. In the thesis, it is argued that the coin is a didrachm with heavily reduced weight, and that the weight reduction is a result of the financial difficulties caused by the Second Punic War.

Allison, Kate. "A comparative study of the Boer War conveyed in the 1901 political cartoons of Edward Linley Sambourne in Punch and Jean Veber in L'Assiette au Beurre." Thesis, University of Lincoln, 2015. http://eprints.lincoln.ac.uk/19811/.

Full text
Abstract:
Political cartoons as headline representation are in effect a combination of artistic licence and a critical version of the truth. Linley Sambourne and Jean Veber’s 1901 cartoons on the Boer War for Punch and L’Assiette au Beurre create tensions and dialectic not only on British and French feeling about foreign policy in South Africa and at home, but also indicate fine points on each publication’s editorial remit. This comparative study is a mirroring synthesis of these approaches that sets the Boer War forty five cartoons in context. Whereas Punch’s cartoons are set within a text layout and L’Assiette’s are the text themselves, both transmit set ideas on The Boer War as ‘sight bite’ news and opinion pieces. Veber’s cartoons offered swift knee-jerk reactions against the ruling elite and the horrors of British cruelty toward Boer prisoners as coverage of the war escalated in 1901. His extreme capturing of the zeitgeist followed the magazine’s editorial bent, but they also reflected his brave counter-hegemonic stance towards a French government seeking an alliance with its British counterpart. With this in mind, Antonio Gramsci’s theory on hegemony as applied to journalism allows the scholar to look at the media from a cultural perspective. This focus is used to show cartoons as representative of conflicts in the fight for power, but this time publicly conveyed to the readership. Thus, types of truth enhancements in each set of cartoons indicate the cartoonists’ respective entrenchment with, or detachment from, Imperial institutions, thereby signalling emerging attempts of the attitudinal persuasion of the reader toward Punch or L’Assiette’s political leanings. The inclusion of political cartoons in editorial pages was part of the cult of visual attention-grabbing news values that had become professionalised, industrialised and popularised by the early Twentieth Century. Cartoons can be decoded using Ernst Gombrich’s six-point filter in order to identify the cartoonist’s method of compressing messages about people and events. A publication’s politics are reflected in the telescoping of exaggerated opinions – an effective way to pass on an authoritatively saturated message to the readership. Gombrich recognised the power of conveying messages to the audience through seemingly incongruous placement of figures in odd situations within cartoons. His methodology acts as visual shorthand for images designed to elicit a desired response to a reported situation as the publication saw it. In the context of the history of journalism, his psychologically analytical approach is appropriate in the appreciation of cartoons’ extremes, often made more acute by the partisan politics of war.

Kubler, Anne. "La mémoire de la deuxième guerre punique." Thesis, Paris 1, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA010659.

Full text
Abstract:
During the Second Punic War, Rome and Carthage confront each other for the hegemony of the western part of the Mediterranean from 219/218 to 201 BC. This war was remembered throughout the centuries in the writings of the Antiquity. The study of the memory of the Second Punic War during the Antiquity consists to analyze the operation of this « collective memory », to identify its uses and abuses. To reach this objective, a text corpus about twenty authors of the Antiquity was selected, from Fabius Pictor to Augustin. A first comparative study of the stories about the Second Punic War of these twenty authors covers the identification of the characteristics of this collective memory. A second comparative study, based on a method elaborated with the semiotics concepts and discourse analysis, was used for a detailed analysis of three episodes of this war : the fall of Sagunto and the outbreak of war, the passage of the Alps by Hannibal, the battle of Lake Trasimeno. Thus, the collective memory of the Second Punic War, in addition to « war memory », can also be described as a « civic memory » and a « manipuled memory ». This collective memory develops the roman qualities (virtus, pietas and fides) who based their identity through a series of exempla. Some historical events of this war have become structuring elements of this collective memory. Between the second century BC and the fifth century AD., four moments were distinguished in the functioning of the collective memory of the Second Punic War : the moment of « historisation », the moment of« exemplarity », the moment of« reduction », and the moment of «diversion»

Abstract:
In the last decades, significant improvements regarding the design, materials and technology of rock drills have been made. Likewise, in sheet metal forming, forming tools experience very high contact pressures when processing high strength steel sheets. In both applications components operate under extremely tough contact conditions that result in an accelerated component failure. Enhancements on mechanical properties of components material subjected to extreme contact conditions are highly required in order to withstand the application loads and prevent severe wear. The present thesis was focused on understanding of machinery component damage mechanisms under severe contact conditions. A case study of worn components used in rock drilling and sheet metal cold work was carried out. Thread joints from rock drilling and punches from sheet metal pressing were selected for the investigation. For these components, sliding contact under high contact pressure is a common load condition under the components usage. Then, to understand and quantify the influence of contact parameters, load and surface quality on material performance, laboratory simulations were performed. The results were used for a comparative analysis of the typical damage mechanisms observed in the tests and the case study of the components. The case study results showed that the threaded surfaces underwent severe plastic deformation due to the high-pressure sliding contact. The microstructure beneath the worn surface was altered and surface cracks and delamination were frequently observed at the worn surface. The dominant damage mechanism found on the investigated punches was adhesive wear. Material transfer adds friction stresses at the punch surface and ultimately, with repeated punch strokes, it leads to initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks. Wear process in thread joint and punch wear was simulated using the SOFS. The worn specimens tested experimentally showed similar wear mechanisms obtained in the case study. The thread joint wear simulation showed that the total damage at the worn surface was a result of adhesive wear, plastic deformation, and initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks. In addition, the results showed that the type of motion had a significant influence on the worn volume and crack initiation, and more severe wear was observed at reciprocal motion. The punch wear simulation showed that the friction quickly increased as work material from metal sheets transferred to the disc surface. The rate of the material transfer was strongly dependent on the combination of sheet material and tool steel. Further, the present experimental simulations were applicable to characterize and predict wear of components in the application.
Components used in rock drilling and sheet metal forming operate under harsh contact conditions that result in an early-life component failure. Wear and fatigue are considered as the most common damage mechanism for these components. Commonly, the service life of a component is designed based on its fatigue life. However, wear might have a significant effect on the components life too. Wear results in a surface damage that in turn may cause a fatigue crack initiation. Therefore, knowledge about wear of materials and components is a key factor in design and prediction of the lifetime of the components. In order to predict wear of a certain component, a thorough understanding of the component with regards to its material properties, application loads and working environment, and damage mechanisms is required. The overall aim of the present work was to define the typical wear mechanisms occurred on machinery components used in rock drilling and sheet metal forming. A comparative analysis of the case studies and results from performed laboratory tests simulated wear mechanisms in the applications highlighted wear mechanisms and factors influencing severity of wear in the applications. Obtained information is crucial for ranking and selection of the best material in the applications.

The presentation will will be via zoom. PhD student will together with the supervisors will be in Karlstad while the opponent is in Luleå.

II – I ane)." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Rovira i Virgili, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/401577.

Abstract:
This thesis aims at defining the Roman Republican military spaces and their archaeological characterisation as a key and structuring element of the Roman presence in the territory and the evolution of this scenario in the northeast of Hispania Citerior, from the period following the second Punic War and until the time of Augustus. From an archaeological reality that we have now pieced together in the northeast, with 62 sites studied, a functional classification has been defined that firstly involved the separation between inherent military spaces and logistical areas. The first section focuses on the camps, the castella, and the towers, and the second section focuses on the military vici and/or the officinae armorum, the administrative or management spaces, or official residences and finally the storage spaces, these being the fields of silos and dolia. The predominance of castella can be singled out as spaces that took advantage of ancient oppida within the territory and with a chronology that is generally focused on between 150 and 50 BCE, which persisted for no more than 50 to 100 years. For the most part, the data converges on the phase of military tension from 125-70 BCE and 50-25 BCE. During the period of 125-70 BCE, a complex military structure had consolidated, a real network of castella in the interior and another along the coast, closing off access to the Iberian Peninsula, while at the same time controlling passages over the Ebro. The complexity and regularity of the sites show a preconceived reality, for a specific time or times of military tensions. Specifically, during the phase of 82-72 BCE. During the Sertorian War, the presence of several defensive lines could be confirmed, being erected by the general to halt troops coming from the north in 82 BCE.

Sauvey, Juliette. Thesis, Strasbourg, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015STRAC007.

Abstract:
This study results from the observation of a paradox : Juno, great Roman goddess, part of the Capitoline triade, has fought the Aeneas' project to establish a settlement in Latium, was hostile to Romulus' apotheosis and has also protected the Carthaginian army of Hannibal. Juno's hostility was told by the poets since Ennius, up to the augustan poets, but can also be studied in the cultual practice, owing to the fact that she was subject to euocatio-rituel several times as in Veii in 395 BC. The ritual of euocatio has been used in order to calm ennemies' divinity and to integrate it in the Roman pantheon. Moreover, Juno's anger implies to be examined simultaneously with her final reconciliation with Rome. Finally, this hostility and reconciliation underwent some updates during the Roman history : Etruscan, Punic or Civil wars. Our approach follows a chronological plan in order to analyze the phenomenon's dynamics while studying both religious and literary facts

Makich, Hamid.

Full text
Abstract:

Li, Long. Nancy 1, 1994. http://www.theses.fr/1994NAN10336.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Does the individual really matter in the post-modern world, brimming with countless signs and signifiers? My main objective in this writing is to demonstrate how this happens in Verhoeven's films, exploring his central themes and subtext and doing what science fiction does: hold a mirror up to the contemporary world and critique it, asking whether our species' current trajectory is beneficial or hazardous.; Dutch director Paul Verhoeven is a polarizing figure. Although many of his American made films have received considerable praise and financial success, he has been lambasted on countless occasions for his gratuitous use of sex, violence, and contentious symbolism--1995s Showgirls was overwhelmingly dubbed the worst film of all time and 1997s Starship Troopers earned him a reputation as a fascist. Regardless of the controversy surrounding him, his science fiction films are a move beyond the conventions of the big blockbuster science fiction films of the 1980s (E.T. and the Star Wars trilogy are prime examples), revealing a deeper exploration of both sociopolitical issues and the human condition. Much like the novels of Philip K. Dick (and Verhoeven's 1990 film Total Recall--an adaptation of a Dick short story), Verhoeven's science fiction work explores worlds where paranoia is a constant and determining whether an individual maintains any liberty is regularly questionable. In this thesis I am basically exploring issues regarding power. Although I barely bring up the term power in it, I feel it is central. Power is an ambiguous term; are we discussing physical power, state power, objective power, subjective power, or any of the other possible manifestations of the word? The original Anglo-French version of power means "to be able," asking whether it is possible for one to do something. In relation to Verhoeven's science fiction work each demonstrates the limitations placed upon an individual's autonomy, asking are the protagonists capable of independent agency or rather just environmental constructs reflecting the myriad influences surrounding them.

Valiani, Laura. "Carthaginian Casualties: The Socioeconomic Effects of the Losses Sustained in the First Punic War." 2016. http://scholarworks.gsu.edu/history_theses/108.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to investigate the short- and long-term socio-economic impact of the First Punic War on Carthage and its people. It will do so by exploring three parts of the Carthaginian political and socio-economic system during the fourth through the second centuries BCE. The first is its navy, and specifically the costs – in both material and man – of its use. This will be the subject of the first chapter. The second analyses the additional expenditures which the war extracted from Carthage, such as the outlays to recruit, maintain, and provide for the land army. The final chapter focuses on the long-term ramifications of the war, which will be explored by means of an in-depth analysis of the last few battles of the First Punic War from an economic angle.

The body and the vision of the experience keep flowing in my head. Various materials; form; colour; object; field; fashion trends; ancient fairy tales. By seeing various landscapes, films, roboforms as thought of reality aesthetics. The core of my creation is “the imagination of the experience of adventure and the youth”. As a punk highway diary with forward belief, each attempt at material texture and capture every colour is my thinking, my exploration and even my challenge to fashion trends and modern art. Here are some points about my essay: Chapter 1 -- prolegomenon: It includes the ways of research, the observation, the background, the purpose, the meaning of words and the belief. Chapter 2 -- points from observing Asia fashion images: First of all, the development of present-day images. Second, the style of violent aesthetics. Third, fluxional punk language. Fourth, fashion trends of the time are the frame of reference. This is a long way from the happiness of reading, to be convinced and then the views of a bystander. At last, being a creator who has to challenge to a contest. Chapter 3 -- a creation picture of innermost monologue by viewing the new embodiment in Taipei. First. Reviewing the course of the author-road thought. Second, Self-portrait transformation of narrative form in content. Third, Organoleptic Gray: Where one kind of true faith is and it''s about the development condition of work according to author''s life. Chapter 4 -- describing the spirit of punk road: It’s a kind of training about doubtful formula or information. First, the meaning of a trip: after experiencing the livelong journey solitarily, the depth perception and the reality of Punk blends into the phantom thing. Second, About Punk cowboy''s attempt: To practice how the designer pondered, and then to become a designer so as to let the thing be initiative from the passive guidance. Third, the value of line drawing: As the motion thought of direct capture, we hope to catch more about this movement''s essence. Finally, the road sonata is the summary of thinking of the author to road creation, but expanding of esthetics elaboration. It is the conformity between Asia''s emerging image and news of the things so as to be a kind of future prospect for retransmutability by the road spirit. GODZILLA (GODZILLA, Japanese mantic ore movie), THE WALL (Fancy Wall, 80’s illusory music movie) and also the samurai spirit which knew from Japanese literature and movie lead to the direct influence on my creation. Supposition: Images like mathematics are the natural language, and all things could be representative of all available images. Drawing a system image artistic collection may obtain the specific rule. Supposition: Fashion, Punk, Roads, also has its own respective phantom and sensation rule. Cartoonists, independent movie-making directors, Hollywood''s actors, survival dreamland, I inside the mirror , traveling….As it concerns to me, the Punk road phantom is the most sincere and direct way to unfold the strength and take the revolt.

Abstract “Representing the God to Guard the World(代天巡守)” and “Pacifying the People to Punish the Iniquity(弔民伐罪) ” were the two formations of war of justice in ancient China. First of all, “Representing the God to Guard the World” was the right of saga-kings from god, which was used to order the earthen world and punish the guilty; comparatively, “Pacifying the People to Punish the Iniquity.” was the right of war from the public. Because the old formation of war, “Representing the God to Guard the World”, had collapsed, the scholars in the Warring States Period advocated to constitute a new stander by moral and public opinions. A war needs different slogan and denotation for fight. Though the war conception had distinct origins, god and public, in ancient China, the two characteristic ideas could cooperate, rival, or function along. Moreover, they believed they were the justice to punish the guilty opponents. Therefore, they used the property war cry to arouse and hope the society would support them and win the war. Through the discussion of the transition of the war conception, the thesis wants to clarify two events. First of all, the history study should take heed of the failure, non-classical, and individual unit’s belief rather than the winner. Secondary, justice is a reason to arouse and continue the war in the both sides of the war. Thus what was war conception of justice in ancient China is the thesis wants to reach.
