Bioenergy projects have been widely promoted across the world since the beginning of the 21st century. These green energy developments are being hailed as a panacea to the energy crisis facing humanity. In the last few years, the global energy sector has been engulfed in a multi-pronged crisis comprising of declining oil reserves, irreversible ecological damage owing to indiscriminate use of fossil fuels as well as widespread energy poverty across many developing countries. Bioenergy imperatives were endorsed as a solution to this multi-dimensional crisis in the global energy sector. It was be

The central aim of this thesis is to examine the multiple dimensions of poverty, using the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS, 2008 and 2011) for the Punjab province of Pakistan. The thesis is based on three core chapters, with a focus on the measurement and determinants (particularly household size) of poverty. Chapter 3 calculates and analyses the multidimensional poverty index (MPI) developed by Alkire and Foster (2007) and the destitution measure (strict subset of the MPI), using health, education and standard of living dimensions for 2011. Abstract:
Rural economies in developing countries are often characterised by high levels of inequality, particularly so in their distribution of land. This can lead to the establishment of patron-client relationships between peasants and their landlords with far-reaching social, political, and economic implications for both parties. This thesis investigates whether, and how, clientelist networks change, when connecting isolated villages become connected to the outside economy. It does so from three different perspectives. Firstly, it highlights the ability of resource rich landlords to interlink differe

The rebellion he led in Punjab resulted from his radical exploitation of issues concerning the Sikh community. Religion was wielded as a tool, legitimizing Sikh violence as commanded by the Gurus.
