Binsted, Kim. "Machine humour : an implemented model of puns." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/586.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes a formal model of a subtype of humour, and the implementation of that model in a program that generates jokes of that subtype. Although there is a great deal of literature on humour in general, very little formal work has been done on puns, and none has been implemented. All current linguistic theories of humour are over-general and not falsifiable. Our model, which is specific, formal, implemented and evaluated, makes a significant contribution to the field. Punning riddles are our chosen subtype of verbal humour, for several reasons. They are very common, they exhibit certain regular structures and mechanisms, and they have been studied previously by linguists. Our model is based on our extensive analysis of large numbers of punning riddles, taken from children's joke books. The implementation of the model, JAPE (Joke Analysis and Production Engine), generates punning riddles, from a humour independent lexicon. Pun generation requires much less world knowledge than pun comprehension, making it feasible for implementation. To support our claim that all of JAPE's output is punning riddles, we conducted an evaluatory experiment. We took JAPE texts, human-generated texts, nonsense non-jokes and sensible non-jokes, and asked joke experts to evaluate them. For joke experts, we used 8-11 year old children, since psychological research suggests that this age group enjoys, and can recognize, punning riddles better than other age groups. The results showed that JAPE's output texts are, in fact, recognizably jokes. The evaluation showed that our model adequately describes a significant subtype of verbal humour. We believe that this model can now be expanded to cover puns in general, as well as other types of linguistic humour.

Full text
Abstract:
Onions (1911/1986), E. Partridge (1947/1968), M.M. Mahood (1957/1965), E.A.M. Colman (1974), F. Rubinstein (1984/1989), G. Williams (1994 y 1997), etc.

Söderström, Filippa, and Jakob Thorén. ""Pun Intended" : The Possible Implementation of Puns to Teach Swedish Upper Secondary School Learners about Meanings of Polysemous Words in the L2 English Classroom."

Full text
Abstract:
This study aims to investigate to what extent Swedish upper secondary school learners of L2 English understand the meanings of polysemous words and whether puns can be used to teach such words. A test and two questionnaires were constructed to retrieve data from both students and teachers. The results of the study show that Swedish upper secondary school learners of L2 English generally have an acceptable knowledge of polysemous words, but depending on the type of program the students are attending, their understanding differs. Based on these results, it was also concluded that puns can be used in education to teach students about the meanings of polysemous words. The results from the questionnaires display that students in general have a positive attitude towards using puns in the classroom and that they found them entertaining and humorous. In addition, the students also saw this approach as beneficial to their retention and motivation. Lastly, the teachers expressed that using humor can strengthen the learning process, and if the students find the teaching situation enjoyable, they learn faster and it can increase their retention.

Crapo, Robert Nishan. "Pun Strategies Across Joke Schemata: A Corpus-Based Study." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2018. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/6739.

Full text
Abstract:
In the linguistic study of humor, research has largely been centered around the formulation of models and theories or the dissecting and categorization of jokes. Because of the often difficult-to-categorize aspects of verbal jokes, much time has been spent trying to create taxonomies for humor types and mechanisms. Linguists such as Raskin and Attardo have sought to categorize all verbal humor according to various functional elements (Attardo & Raskin, 1991). Such elements include, but are not limited to, the logical mechanism that drives the humor in the joke or the situation where the joke takes place. These categorizations are helpful in understanding the potential components of a given joke. However, relatively few studies have sought to quantify and qualify the distribution of these components across real-world data. This study seeks to understand the distribution of some of these categorizations laid out by Raskin and Attardo across joke topics, namely pun wordplay and narrative strategy. To do this, an original 100,000 word joke corpus was designed and compiled consisting of four joke topics: Marriage, Politics, Animals, and Food. Through some manual sorting and Python programming, jokes were labeled according to wordplay strategy and narrative structure. A subsequent statistical analysis was carried out to determine whether there exists a pattern of specific joke strategies when dealing with children's humor versus adult humor.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Puns are short humorous texts that play on structural ambiguity in order to create incongruous scripts. The perception of their humour requires considerable pragmatic manipulation, which may present problems for L2 learners, which is why many scholars agree that they are best reserved for more advanced students. Using a combination of Quantitative and Qualitative analysis of data yielded from a survey containing puns and referential jokes, this study confirms that humour through puns is largely inaccessible to Swedish High School learners of English, with ambiguity being the main obstacle across the test groups. However, since language play has been proven to be facilitative to language learning, and since students themselves express a wish to be able to participate in humorous interaction, learners may well benefit from working with puns and language play in the classroom in order to gain greater linguistic abilities and well-rounded communicative competence.

Abstract:
This study investigates the use of different strategies for translating puns in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The material chosen for this study consist of the two Swedish translations by Nonnen (1870/1984) and Westman (2009). Six puns were selected for the analysis which greatly relies on Delabastita’s (1996) eight strategies for translating puns, and Newmark’s (1988) translation methods. The analysis shows that Westman empathises with the readers of the TT while Nonnen empathises with the ST. This entails that Westman tends to use a more ‘free’ translation and is more inclined to adapt the ST puns to make them more visible for the readership of the TT. The priority for Nonnen, on the other hand, is to remain faithful to the contextual meaning of the ST. Paradoxically, to be faithful to the ST does not necessarily entail that the translator respects the semantic aspects of the ST, but that they adapt the culture of the ST to better fit the cultural and linguistic framework of the TL. Since Westman adapts the ST puns so that they are still recognised by the reader of the TT, her translation appears to be more suitable for the TL readership than Nonnen’s.

Docherty, Thomas Michael. "Consummatum est : the end of the word in Geoffrey Hill's poetry." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2018. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/278962.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis intends to demonstrate that the idea of the end is a crucial motive of Geoffrey Hill’s poetry. It analyses the verbal and formal means by which Hill attempts to have his poems arrive at ends. The ends are, chiefly, the reconciliation of antagonists in word or thought; and the perfect articulation of the poem. The acknowledgement of failure to achieve such ends provides its own impetus to Hill’s work. The thesis examines in detail Hill’s puns, word-games, rhymes, syntaxes, and genres — their local reconciliations and entrenched contrarieties — and claims for them a significant place in the study of Hill’s poetry, particularly with regard to its sustained concern with ends and endings. Little has been written to date about Hill’s entire poetic corpus as represented in Broken Hierarchies (2013), due to the recentness of the work. This thesis draws from the earliest to the latest of Hill’s poetic writings; and makes extensive use of archival material. It steps beyond the ‘historical drama’ of language depicted in Matthew Sperling’s Visionary Philology (2014) and Alex Pestell’s Geoffrey Hill: The Drama of Reason (2016) and asserts that the drama in Hill’s poetry, seeking to transcend history, is constantly related to its end: not only its termination in time but its consummating purpose.

Abstract:
Language play has an important position in the use of language. Cook (in Lucas, 2005) makes the argument that language play is even one of the primary uses of language. Partly due to the focus on research in second language learning, advanced L2 users’ language processing gets little attention in research on language use (Shaw & McMillion, 2008). Therefore, there is limited knowledge regarding the reading processes of this group.  While Shaw and McMillion (2008) show that there is no difference in language proficiency between L1 and advanced L2 readers, Paradis (2009) argues that there indeed is a difference in processing among L1 and advanced L2 speakers. Gernsbacher and Robertson (1995) examined the differences in processing between more and less skilled L1 readers using ambiguous words and puns. However, this kind of research has not been done for L1 and advanced L2 readers.  A study concerning the speed and ability in pun recognition was carried out to investigate whether any differences could be found between L1 and advanced L2 readers, with the same language proficiency. Tests in accuracy and speed in recognizing puns were carried out with university students in Stockholm and Los Angeles, while a survey investigating degree of amusement was distributed online.  Initial hypotheses assumed that L1 readers, compared to L2 readers, would be both more skilled and faster at identifying a number of categories of puns as well as perceiving all categories of puns as being more amusing. Results show support for some of these hypotheses: L1 speakers were faster and more accurate in finding certain categories of puns. However, other categories showed no difference, and results were not able to prove differences in degree of amusement between the two groups. Questions about other categorizations of puns are raised, as well as further research opportunities.

Abstract: The development of punk in Brazil happened by the end of the military dictatorship. It made essential, to this group of young people, the events concerning the redemocratization of the Constituent Assembly and the direct elections. However, this new democracy gave room to many different political organizations that became part of the Brazilian daily life. Such events were essential to fanzines, that made efforts to discuss them and, sometimes, looked into them for inspiration to their material and discursive form. Thus, punk fanzines manifest the concept of bricolage, inherent of the punk esthetics, as the axis of its discursive and reading practices. Through the collage of excerpts of other prints, fanzines subverted the original meanings of the cutouts they used, inserting them in reading supports of confuse appearance, making the reader divagate along the pages. Not coincidentally, they were part of a discursive form that sounded confuse and truncated, hard to understand for the public outside the punk subculture. This discourse made efforts in restricting the internal violence of the group and represent it as an agent committed to transforming the country and the world. Such discourse was named union and awareness.

The Punk Movement emerged in the mid-1970s as one of the last anti-establishment movements. It started mainly as a musical phenomenon, the punk rock, anti-conformist protest adopted by part of the young American intellectuals and then by the British. In the beggining it was against the commercialism that rock music had submitted to, afterwards it expanded to a social, cultural and artistic movement of anti-establishment youthful challenge. It grew and radicalized within the working class, mainly in Britain, afterwards it spread across all over the world seen by authorities as a subversive culture movement. In Brazil it started in many metropolitan regions of São Paulo in which the most expressivity was observed in the center region emphasized by the media factor, and in the industrial part of ABC region where it obtained more expressive and radical ways where the movement was involved with the working and union fights accurred in the late 1970s and beggining of 1980s
Abstract:
’Abū al-‘Alā’ al-Ma‘arrī who lived in the North of Syria between the 4th and the 5th century was suspected of heresy for a long time, and was finally cleared by the Nahd{a pioneers at the end of the 19th century. Extremely keen on the Arabic language and provided with an intricate style of writing, the question today is whether to believe his contemporaries or the opinion of men who lived centuries later. The present study tries to understand the author’s language and why such a brillant cultivated man wrote what looks like a trivial animal fable.A detailed analysis of the text reveals a succession of puns, hints to historical events, anecdotes and coranic quotes which grow into a second text interwoven throughout the « Epistle of a Horse and a Mule ». This latter appears to be, on the one hand, a vehement criticism towards religion, islam and Muh{ammad its prophet, and, on the other hand, advice given to Aleppo’s governor, ‘Azīz al-Dawla, who though allegied to the Fatimids, has a tendency toward independence, encouraging him to take arms and propagate the masters ideas. Nevertheless, the real faith of the author remains undetermined except for his refusal of all religious system viewed by him as mechanisms set to fool simple souls, and his belief that death is nothing but an endless sleep.Al-Ma‘arrī’s writing technique appears to be a refined combination of the bedouin’s technique tawriya which originally served as a means to escape censureship or even repression, and inspired by the pehlevi work of Kalila wa-Dimna, princes advice if ever there was

This essay is the result of the analysis of history fragments and Punk culture, as well as some artistic productions by the members of this movement, as zines and musics utilized by the Punks to defend their ideals and to establish its position before a hegemonic culture imposed on then. The productions analysed are the main sources of data for the fulfillment of this research, because the sources selected allow for an analysis considering the proximity between the Punk culture and the Underground scene from some similarities found during the research, as the influence of the Counterculture and the fight before the imposed standards. With the intention to elaborate a bibliographic review, considering the possible relations between the Punk movement and the Underground, being these elements present in most urban centers, this research is directed to two cities from São Paulo inland, Atibaia and Bragança Paulista, each one with its own culture and behavior. In this essay other movements besides the Punk are cited merely as comparative elements, because the Punk movement, its Underground component allies and all it's set of practices and actions, provide the minimally necessary data for the analysis of the proximity between the Punk culture and the Underground.

Loison-Charles, Julie. "Les mots étrangers de Vladimir Nabokov." Thesis, Paris 10, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA100051/document.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis shows how central Nabokov’s multilingualism was to his prose in English: after authoring several works in Russian, the writer changed languages and then only wrote his novels in English. It was not merely a second language for him because Nabokov could write English before Russian and he had spoken it since childhood. Besides, he enjoyed a polyglot education and was fluent in French. This thesis studies Nabokov’s style in English by focusing on his linguistic creativity and by examining the founding role that translation played in how his several tongues were going to position themselves in relation to one another. Nabokov’s bilingual identity means that his writing both challenges and deviates from the norm: it is dappled with strangeness and foreignness. In his novels, foreign words irrupt in the midst of the English prose and, typographically and semantically, they destabilize the reading experience: code-switching is at the heart of this thesis and questions the relation between “the narrator’s tyranny” (Couturier) and his reader. English itself loses its familiarity and becomes a foreign language: Nabokov’s bilingualism means he is like a foreigner in this tongue; therefore he reveals the violence of language (Lecercle) and puts it into play through puns and neologisms. Nabokov is what Deleuze calls, thanks to a Proustian expression, a great writer: his books “are written in a kind of foreign language”

The development of punk in Brazil happened by the end of the military dictatorship.

Schröter, Thorsten. "Shun the Pun, Rescue the Rhyme? : The Dubbing and Subtitling of Language Play in Film." Doctoral thesis, Karlstad University, Faculty of Arts and Education, 2005. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-704.

Full text
Abstract:

Language-play can briefly be described as the wilful manipulation of the peculiarities of a linguistic system in a way that draws attention to these peculiarities themselves, thereby causing a communicative and cognitive effect that goes beyond the conveyance of propositional meaning. Among the various phenomena answering this description are the different kinds of puns, but also more strictly form-based manipulations such as rhymes and alliteration, in addition to a host of other, sometimes even fuzzier, subcategories.

Due to its unusual nature, and especially its frequently strong dependence on the idiosyncrasies of a particular language, language-play can generally be assumed to constitute a significant challenge in a translation context. Furthermore, given its non-negligible effects, the translator is not free to simply ignore the language-play (provided it has been recognized as such in the first place) without having taken an active stance on its treatment. However, the difficulties in finding a suitable target-language solution are possibly exacerbated if the source text is a complex multimedia product such as a film, the translation of which, normally in the form of dubbing or subtitling, is subject to additional constraints.

In view of these intricacies, it has been the aim of this study to analyze and measure how language-play in film has actually been treated in authentic dubbing and subtitle versions. As a prerequisite, the concept of language-play has been elaborated on, and more than a dozen subcategories have been described, developed, and employed. For the purpose of carrying out a meaningful analysis of the dubbing and subtitling of language-play, a corpus has been compiled, comprising 18 family films and 99 of their various target versions, most on DVD, and yielding nearly 800 source-text instances of language-play and thousands of translation solutions.

The results indicate that especially two sets of factors, among the many that are likely to influence a translation, play a prominent role: the type of the language-play, and the identity and working conditions of the translator. By contrast, the mode of translation (dubbing vs. subtitling), the target language, or the general properties of the films, could not be shown to have a sizeable impact.

The Social Sciences dedicate attention on studying the youth as a new bias on the construction of identities (Hall, 1999) in different formats and as a continuous process that occurs at a daily manner. The present work tends to understand and punctuate specific points on the modification of musical genders on a historical and bibliographic way, with a profound study of the new musicality and its insertion on the youth universe. The first musical chords of the American black music were considered, such as its influences, at a first moment identifying the artists that dedicated their work to this new musical possibility and at a second moment, to the new visual possibilities that were presented during the route of this change. The present work takes on a photographic bias to identify and punctuate the different musical style modifications, following, at a first glance, the changes at the North American scenario and secondly, on the English ground. On this second moment, this dissertation points out the changes occurred on musical aspects and through the analyses of images and photography of the 60´s, showing later that at a punctual way these changes occurred simultaneously at the USA and England, culminating on the consolidation of a new musical and visual style, which was called the Punk Culture. Considering the music and photography as a basis for a permanent dialogue, an ethnographic research was conducted at the city of Ribeirão Preto, considering the musical scenario at the 90´s and the actuation of the present researcher on the punk music movement of the city. This work of investigation and identification also traces a comparison with the present day and identifies a visual and musical scenario with the influence of the punk movement on the city at the present day (2007)

Lohman, Kirsty. "Punk lives : contesting boundaries in the Dutch punk scene." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2015. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/75547/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the everyday experiences of subcultural participants. It takes as its focus the Dutch punk scene, tracing its emergences and development and mapping it historically and spatially. It explores the meanings attached to punk by its participants past and present. If further situates punk as part of participants’ wider lives, in particular in their mobility, connectivity, political engagements and life choices. This thesis speaks to several areas of enquiry. It most prominently contributes to subcultural debates, as well as the emerging field of ‘punk studies’. However the research presented here also has implications for discussions of globalisation, particularly in terms of cultural flow and the effect on local scene ‘boundaries’. It further contributes to conceptual developments of political activity in a world with ever more emphasis on individualised choice. This is an ethnographic project. The arguments presented in this thesis are the result of fieldwork undertaken between July 2010 and April 2011. Data include semi-structured interviews with thirty-three participants of the Dutch punk scene, both past and present. Interview data is further contextualised with a fieldwork diary based on participant observation. As a result of this research, this thesis argues for an approach to social research that recognises the ‘messiness’ and the ‘connectedness’ of the social world. In order to unpick how punk operates and what meanings it has for members, we must understand the wider social, cultural and economic context in which subcultures – and their participants – are embedded. The thesis concludes that in order to productively conceptualise punk we must recognised the artificiality of a number of boundaries. By widening the lens of what punk is, by realising its global context, and by broadening our definition of politics, we will better understand the everyday meaning of punk to its participants around the world.

The present work comes from my experiences and concerns with the decade of the 1980 s. When living at Parque São Rafael, a district located on the east side of São Paulo city, I had the opportunity to witness the punk movement that grew in the city. Nevertheless, what really called my attention was the little, but growing, commitment to the punk movement with anarchist ideas which were expressed by its practices and experiences. The main aim of this reasearch is to analyse, discusss and study the anarchism in the punk movement, taking into account its political, social and cultural characteristics in São Paulo city. In order to analyse it, the study is based on documents, texts, enterviews, letters, articles and fanzines published by punk members of the studied historical period. We tried to give voice and visibility to historical individuals which actively integrated the punk movement and had relation to anarchist ideas in the decade of the 1980 s. We also bared in mind that the punks are social individuals living and interacting in society. It is known that those interactions are marked by struggles, resistance and interference in their search for indentity references in the city. So our intention is to make a contribuition to the debate and discussion about anarchism in the punk movement. This study does not include conclusions but discusses the ways and interactions in the punk movement related to anarchism as they aimed at an anarchist society. That attitude is still alive in many groups called anarcho-punks which continue their protests in São Paulo

Full text
Abstract:
III i IV).
On 1967 D. Quillen introduced the notion of model category, a structure adapted for the study of homotopical algebra. A model category structure in a given category consists in the election of three types of distinguished morphisms, subject to certain axioms, which allow to define an homotopy theory in the category and specific representations of the homotopy category. Also, a structure of model category provides with criteria for the existence and calculation of derived functors of functors defined among categories which share the above mentioned structure. This is the context to this report.
Regarding the model categories, we prove here that, usual categories in diferential homological algebra and in rational homotopy, such as the category of dg-modules over a dgc-algebra, or the category of extensions of a fixed dgc-algebra have such a structure. As an application, we prove the existence of the derived functors of "tensorial product" and "indecomposables" (chapter II).
A particular type of models are minimal models, introduced in rational homotopyby Sullivan. In this report we suggest a categorical definition of these models, which includes other minimal models already written about (as, for example Tate-Jozefiakminimal resolutions). Also, we prove the existence of these models in the category of cochain complexes over a local ring and in the category of dg-modules over adgc-algebra.
The central theme in this report is the study of the structures of model categories and of minimal models in bifibred categories. We owe the definition of these to Grothendieck. We can consider a bifibred category as a family of categories parametrized by another category. For example, the category of dg-modules over anydgc-algebra or the category of morphisms of dgc-algebras are bifibred categories. In the report we prove that such categories admit a natural structure of model category and we characterize their minimal models (chapters III and IV).
Among the diferent types of rational homotopy , Sullivan points out the formals as the ones being determinated entirely by the cohomology algebra. This notion derives from the existence of an homotopic obstruction to the existence of k¨alherianstructures on a variety. In this report we give a categorical definition of formality. This definition, applied to the above mentioned bifibred categories, allows a generalization of the results of Sullivan: formality of dgc-algebra morphisms does not depend on theground field (chapter IV, theoreme V).
The last chapter centres on the diferential tor, the derived functor of tensorial product of dg-modules and dgc-algebras. The main results are the comparison between the diferent definitions of this diferential tor and the compatibility with the forgetful functor and the indecomposable functor (chapter V).

Abstract:
To estimate the prevalence of bovine leptospirosis and the possible association with age and procedence of a study involving 103 sera samples were performed. Samples from 98 female and 5 male Brown Swiss raised in the province of Puno-Puno were obtained. The animals came from the Illpa-INIA experimental station (Paucarcolla) and the Cardenas cattle farm (Mañazo). A sample collection during february and march (rainy season) was performed. Sera samples of 4 serovar reference set of Leptospira interrogans by the MAT were tested. Two positive samples (2,74% of specific prevalence) from the Illpa INIA station and one (3,33 % of specific prevalence) from the Cardenas farm were detected. The three positive cases represented a total prevalence of 2,91%. Leptospira icterohaemorhagiae was the serovar involved in all three cases. Antibody titers of 1:200 from a 5 month old female from the Cardenas cattle farm and of 1:100 from two females of 2 and 4 years old from the Illpa-INIA station were found.Key Words: Leptospirosis, bovine, serology, microaglutination, prevalence.

Abstract:

This paper studies the effects of an electromagnetic pulse on IC-circuits. A DUT (device under test) has been constructed so that the effects of the pulse can be evaluated. The DUT consists of a battery, a load and the component, which is to be tested. A high voltage power supply and an antenna were used to generate the pulses that the DUT were exposed to. The results show that the effects were dependent on, among others, the distance between the antenna and the DUT and the time during which the DUT was exposed to the pulse. The DUT has also been exposed to different polarisations of the pulse.

One of the objectives of the study was to compare the difference between a pulse from an antenna and from a wire. This was to be done with the same high voltage power supply. Attempts to use a wire, for injecting the pulse, were unsuccessful since the damped pulse was not satisfying.

This paper is a part of a paper, High Power Ultra Wide Band and Vircator Source-Victim Experiment, that was presented at the conference EMC Europe 2008.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the punk phenomenon in China. In order to examine punk members and practices, an ethnographic research was conducted in large-scale cities, such as Beijing and Shanghai, and small-scale cities, such as Wuhan and Huaihua in China, as well as on the Internet. In particular, the thesis focuses on two prominent themes subculture and resistance as the main directions of analysis. Through discussing findings from the three dimensions of the individual, collective and online, it is argued that the Chinese punk phenomenon exists as a subculture and punk subcultural practices can be regarded as manifesting forms of resistance in China. First, this study presents a detailed individual biography of one punk musician and then further examines those of other participants. It is discovered that subcultural resistance can have a different impact at different stages of a person s life. Second, this study demonstrates forms of collective practices and how they are manifested, and reveals how Chinese punk subculture members collectively produce different forms of subcultural resistance. Finally, this study examines Chinese punk online. It focuses on how online group members produce meanings of their activities and deploy specific techniques to resist online norms and censorship. Overall this thesis contributes to the ongoing discussions in current field of subcultural studies. By providing a study on punk subculture in China, the research engages empirically in the question of power relations in a society from both individual and collective levels, which has rarely been undertaken before.

Abstract:
This essay examines the inherent instability present in Diana Wynne Jones’ 1986 novel Howl’s Moving Castle. I suggest that in relying on the ambiguity of the story and the setting, Jones creates not only a more complex universe, but allows the characters to be multidimensional -- both literally and figuratively -- without having any stable selves. Using deconstruction as a (non-existent) foundation for my analysis, I contend that the strength of the story is in the looseness of it. Thus, by using a Derridean approach with added Cixousian feminist elements and a heap of Kristevian intertextuality, I further argue that Jones invites the reader to embrace the ambiguity of identity by closely analyzing the conflicting behaviours of the two main characters in the novel, Sophie Hatter and Wizard Howl. In conclusion, I argue that Diana Wynne Jones through subverting classic fairy tale tropes in an ingenious way, suggests that there is no such thing as a final finished growing person and that there is comfort to be found in embracing this incompleteness.

Friestedt, Anna, and Kristin Sjövall. "Ecologically sustainable housing and transporting in Pune, India : Ekologiskt hållbar hus- och transportplanering i Pune, Indien." Thesis, Jönköping University, JTH, Civil Engineering, 2006. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-544.

Full text
Abstract:

This thesis is the result of a final project work carried out by Anna Friestedt and Kristin Sjövall during the spring semester of 2006. The purpose of this work is to investigate in what ways the Indian city Pune is working towards ecological sustainability within the fields of housing and transporting. The work contains a case study of an area in Pune called Magarpatta City.

The report is split into four parts. First, laws and regulations both in Sweden and in India that concern ecologically sustainable development are presented. Second, an explanation on existing solutions within housing and transporting in Pune follows, later specified details concerning the case study in Magarpatta City is presented and finally this is analysed.

Pune is in many ways working to improve their ways of ecologically sustainable development. In India, and Pune, there are several laws and regulations to regulate sustainable development. Unfortunately it has been a long time since these laws and regulations were updated and by doing so one might achieve sustainability.

Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has many projects on the go to improve the city environmentally. PMC has brought out an Eco-housing concept which promotes a more ecological way of building. The concept makes it easier for private builders to get a bank loan if the construction is considering several eco-friendly aspects. To achieve more houses constructed in an eco-friendly way Pune and India are in the need of more pilot projects showing eco-friendly materials and construction techniques. PMC is also taking decisions in how to transform the public transportation system to a more environmentally sustainable one. Several different transportations systems are under evaluation. After our time in Pune our meaning is that the Bus Rapid Transit system is the most cost efficient one to implement in Pune.

Magarpatta City is an area in Pune that is developed considering the concept ‘walk-to-work and walk-to-school’. The area has made many efforts towards ecological sustainability and is probably the best area in Pune, as well as in all of India, to do a case study at, in the aspect of ecological sustainable housing and transporting.

Stewart, Francis Elizabeth. ""Punk rock is my religion" : an exploration of straight edge punk as a surrogate of religion." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/3441.

Full text
Abstract:
Using a distinctly and deliberately interdisciplinary approach to the subject of religion and spirituality as it presents itself within modern Western Societies today, this thesis argues that Straight Edge hardcore punk is a surrogate for religion. The term surrogate is used to denote the notion of a successor and a protector and provider of nourishment. It has been re-interpreted from Theodore Ziolkowski’s work on the same term in ‘Modes of Faith’, in which he examines surrogates for religion which emerged during the early part of the 20th century. An in-depth study, both theoretical and ethnographic in nature and presentation, of Straight Edge hardcore punk is provided to demonstrate that traditionally held categories of religion, secular, sacred and profane are being dismantled and re-built around ideas of authenticity, community, integrity, d.i.y and spirituality. Through the syncretic practices of the Straight Edge adherents they are de-essentialising religion and thus enabling us to re-consider the question of what religion is or could be. This thesis relies on theoretical ideas, interview quotes, informant quotes, researcher taken photographs, and interviewee created or utilised images, tattoos, graffiti and flyers. All of these are interspersed with song lyrics from various bands relevant to the time period under discussion and the themes being drawn out. Much like the adherents themselves, this thesis exists very much within the space of the ‘in-between’, which creates and reacts to necessary tensions throughout.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the relationships between punk and anarchism in the contemporary contexts of the UK, Poland, and Indonesia from an insider punk and anarchist perspective. New primary ethnographic information forms the bulk of the research, drawing on Grounded Theory Method and an engagement with Orientalism. The theoretical framework is informed by the concept of antinomy which embraces complication and contradiction and rather than attempt to smooth-out complexities, impose a simplified narrative, or construct a fanciful dialectic, the thesis examines the numerous tensions that emerge in order to critique the relationships between punk and anarchism. A key tension which runs throughout the PhD is the dismissal of punk by some anarchists. This is often couched in terms of lifestylist versus workerist anarchism, with punk being denigrated in association with the former. The case studies bring out this tension, but also significantly complicate it, and the final chapter analyses this issue in more detail to argue that punk engages with a wide spectrum of anarchisms, and that the lifestylist / workerist dichotomy is anyway false. The case studies themselves focus on themes such as anti-fascism, food sovereignty/animal rights activism, politicisation, feminism, squatting, religion, and repression. New empirical information, garnered through numerous interviews and extensive participant observation in the UK, Poland, and Indonesia, informs the thick description of the case study contexts. The theory and analysis emerge from this data, and the voice of the punks themselves is given primacy here.

Abstract:
How are we to combat terrosrism? Is terrorism ever morally justified? When is it rational to become a terrorist? What is so terrorizing about terrorism? The answers to these important questions depend on the most fundamental one: what is terrorism? In this thesis I utilize a practice analysis to discover how we in the West think about war. From that analysis, a definition of terrorism, captured in military categories, is offered. This definition is then used to discover what makes terrorism so terrifying for us. Finally, the definition of terrorism argued for in this thesis is tested for its applicability to further analysis by using the definition to analyze the current Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Pentagon and World Trade Center attacks on events of September 11th, and nuclear deterrence.

Abstract:
The Puno region has the resources and opportunities of the regions with the highest competitiveness index of Peru due to the highland wealth, not yet in its maximum capacity in the economic activities: pisciculture, livestock (alpaca fiber), agriculture (potato) and the tourism. As for the first, the region of Puno is the main producer of trout in the country and occupies the ninth place in the international stage as an exporter of frozen trout. In relation to tourism, the Titicaca National Reserve, the Uros island, representatives traditionally the best known and most popular tourist offer. Regarding livestock in the case of alpaca fiber, Puno has been dedicated from time immemorial to raising it with a roof: the largest population of alpacas in Peru and the world is on their land, but their situation could be even better if they adopt technologies sophisticated breeding for obtaining alpaca fiber that has a high price in international markets; With respect to agriculture, Puno is one of the main producers of potatoes in Peru, however, its currency situation if it uses technology for primary and secondary production. However, this same region is among the poorest in Peru, in addition to the main focus of informal border trade, which in part makes it not very competitive. The vision of Puno to the year 2027 is to become the leading region of Peru in economic activities: pisciculture, livestock (alpaca), agriculture (potato) and tourism; contributing in the development of the country, being a world leader in the sector sectors. Likewise, achieve with these economic activities a portfolio in the inclusive development and be recognized for the competitiveness of its industries, which promises high quality products and added value, which allows it to obtain an important participation in international trade. Likewise, the sustainable management of its renewable natural resources and the search for equality and social inclusion will grant a high quality of life to its population and adapt to the technique to its population will achieve a better quality of life covering their needs basic. On the other hand, in mid-2018, it has been determined that Puno has the largest lithium reserve in the world, which, if adequate Strategic Planning is carried out, will strengthen the aforementioned sectors; because the financial resources will increase for all sectors, which will impact on the rest of the sectors. This will place Puno among the first regions of Peru due to its great natural potential. However, it is important to direct the financial resources to eradicate anemia in the region, in order to have a significant impact on the health and education sector

Abstract:
Lydia Lunch, David Wojnarowicz and Vaginal Davis are artists who each produced music, film, literature, performance, visual art and installation whilst participating in the subcultural communities of post-punk. This thesis frames them as post-punk polymaths, artists whose subcultural participation provides a link between their multiple artistic outputs. I position these artists in relation to the historical context of post-punk, and document its influence on both specific examples of their work and their artistic strategies more broadly. My original contribution is of a sustained process of attention to the work of these three artists that negotiates their personal antagonisms towards criticism and resistance to historicisation, the methodological challenge exemplified by their practice, and the critical potential of embracing this difficulty. Through an account of New York's post-punk scene (the formative artistic environment of both Lunch and Wojnarowicz), I examine the way the material conditions of the subculture provoked an undifferentiated, multi-media practice. I explore Lunch's work through this subcultural context, and the interrelations of her diverse outputs and intentional blurring of art and life in her public persona. Through the work of David Wojnarowicz, I explore the potential pitfalls of overdetermination, or confined articulations of his practice within popular criticism and academia. My third case study moves away from New York to focus on the work of Los Angeles post-punk artist Vaginal Davis, examining the responsibility subculturally invested artists may have in maintaining their own marginality, through a framing of Davis's practice as self-sabotaging. My thesis therefore highlights the difficulty of rationalising these practices as objects of disciplinarily constituted analysis, the problematic nature of their omission or selective and incomplete engagement, and examines the potential of the term polymath to understand artists whose work fails to map on to the disciplinary remits of academic scholars, genre critics or popular historians.
