Abstract:
Language play has an important position in the use of language. Cook (in Lucas, 2005) makes the argument that language play is even one of the primary uses of language. Partly due to the focus on research in second language learning, advanced L2 users’ language processing gets little attention in research on language use (Shaw & McMillion, 2008). Therefore, there is limited knowledge regarding the reading processes of this group.  While Shaw and McMillion (2008) show that there is no difference in language proficiency between L1 and advanced L2 readers, Paradis (2009) argues that there indeed is a difference in processing among L1 and advanced L2 speakers. Gernsbacher and Robertson (1995) examined the differences in processing between more and less skilled L1 readers using ambiguous words and puns. However, this kind of research has not been done for L1 and advanced L2 readers.  A study concerning the speed and ability in pun recognition was carried out to investigate whether any differences could be found between L1 and advanced L2 readers, with the same language proficiency. Tests in accuracy and speed in recognizing puns were carried out with university students in Stockholm and Los Angeles, while a survey investigating degree of amusement was distributed online.  Initial hypotheses assumed that L1 readers, compared to L2 readers, would be both more skilled and faster at identifying a number of categories of puns as well as perceiving all categories of puns as being more amusing. Results show support for some of these hypotheses: L1 speakers were faster and more accurate in finding certain categories of puns. However, other categories showed no difference, and results were not able to prove differences in degree of amusement between the two groups. Questions about other categorizations of puns are raised, as well as further research opportunities.

Söderström, Filippa, and Jakob Thorén. ""Pun Intended" : The Possible Implementation of Puns to Teach Swedish Upper Secondary School Learners about Meanings of Polysemous Words in the L2 English Classroom."

Abstract:
This study aims to investigate to what extent Swedish upper secondary school learners of L2 English understand the meanings of polysemous words and whether puns can be used to teach such words. A test and two questionnaires were constructed to retrieve data from both students and teachers. The results of the study show that Swedish upper secondary school learners of L2 English generally have an acceptable knowledge of polysemous words, but depending on the type of program the students are attending, their understanding differs. Based on these results, it was also concluded that puns can be used in education to teach students about the meanings of polysemous words. The results from the questionnaires display that students in general have a positive attitude towards using puns in the classroom and that they found them entertaining and humorous. In addition, the students also saw this approach as beneficial to their retention and motivation. Lastly, the teachers expressed that using humor can strengthen the learning process, and if the students find the teaching situation enjoyable, they learn faster and it can increase their retention.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Puns are short humorous texts that play on structural ambiguity in order to create incongruous scripts. The perception of their humour requires considerable pragmatic manipulation, which may present problems for L2 learners, which is why many scholars agree that they are best reserved for more advanced students. Using a combination of Quantitative and Qualitative analysis of data yielded from a survey containing puns and referential jokes, this study confirms that humour through puns is largely inaccessible to Swedish High School learners of English, with ambiguity being the main obstacle across the test groups. However, since language play has been proven to be facilitative to language learning, and since students themselves express a wish to be able to participate in humorous interaction, learners may well benefit from working with puns and language play in the classroom in order to gain greater linguistic abilities and well-rounded communicative competence.

Schröter, Thorsten. "Shun the Pun, Rescue the Rhyme? : The Dubbing and Subtitling of Language Play in Film." Doctoral thesis, Karlstad University, Faculty of Arts and Education, 2005. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-704.

Full text
Abstract:

Language-play can briefly be described as the wilful manipulation of the peculiarities of a linguistic system in a way that draws attention to these peculiarities themselves, thereby causing a communicative and cognitive effect that goes beyond the conveyance of propositional meaning. Among the various phenomena answering this description are the different kinds of puns, but also more strictly form-based manipulations such as rhymes and alliteration, in addition to a host of other, sometimes even fuzzier, subcategories.

Due to its unusual nature, and especially its frequently strong dependence on the idiosyncrasies of a particular language, language-play can generally be assumed to constitute a significant challenge in a translation context. Furthermore, given its non-negligible effects, the translator is not free to simply ignore the language-play (provided it has been recognized as such in the first place) without having taken an active stance on its treatment. However, the difficulties in finding a suitable target-language solution are possibly exacerbated if the source text is a complex multimedia product such as a film, the translation of which, normally in the form of dubbing or subtitling, is subject to additional constraints.

In view of these intricacies, it has been the aim of this study to analyze and measure how language-play in film has actually been treated in authentic dubbing and subtitle versions. As a prerequisite, the concept of language-play has been elaborated on, and more than a dozen subcategories have been described, developed, and employed. For the purpose of carrying out a meaningful analysis of the dubbing and subtitling of language-play, a corpus has been compiled, comprising 18 family films and 99 of their various target versions, most on DVD, and yielding nearly 800 source-text instances of language-play and thousands of translation solutions.

The results indicate that especially two sets of factors, among the many that are likely to influence a translation, play a prominent role: the type of the language-play, and the identity and working conditions of the translator. By contrast, the mode of translation (dubbing vs. subtitling), the target language, or the general properties of the films, could not be shown to have a sizeable impact.

Abstract:
This present work tries to give an explanation to difficulties that meet the gabonese learners in learning spanish, foreign language. Abstract:
This study investigates the use of different strategies for translating puns in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The material chosen for this study consist of the two Swedish translations by Nonnen (1870/1984) and Westman (2009). Six puns were selected for the analysis which greatly relies on Delabastita’s (1996) eight strategies for translating puns, and Newmark’s (1988) translation methods. The analysis shows that Westman empathises with the readers of the TT while Nonnen empathises with the ST. This entails that Westman tends to use a more ‘free’ translation and is more inclined to adapt the ST puns to make them more visible for the readership of the TT. The priority for Nonnen, on the other hand, is to remain faithful to the contextual meaning of the ST. Paradoxically, to be faithful to the ST does not necessarily entail that the translator respects the semantic aspects of the ST, but that they adapt the culture of the ST to better fit the cultural and linguistic framework of the TL. Since Westman adapts the ST puns so that they are still recognised by the reader of the TT, her translation appears to be more suitable for the TL readership than Nonnen’s.

Matsanga, Mackossot Ginette Flore. Paris 13, 2004. http://www.theses.fr/2004PA131029.

Full text
Abstract:
Traditional palaver for the Punu people is a social phenomenon, a meeting, a gathering intended to settle down problems which may bring about disorder in society. It is based on an exchange of words. As a codified speech, palaver can only be apprehended within a particular environment. The manifestation of this phenomenon discloses some elements of drama such as dialog, gesture, silence and dancing. We have studied traditional palaver as a social drama basing our work on two transcribed and translated texts. In that framework, the palaver's analysis has led us to realize how speech changes into action and meaning thanks to its countless aspects. We have then come to the conclusion that oral tradition inspires francophone African drama a lot, notably Gabonese one. To that end, "La Mort de Guykafi", a play by Vincent de Paul Nyonda has helped us justify that assertion

Middleton, Angela. "Te Puna : the archaeology and history of a New Zealand Mission Station, 1832-1874." Thesis, University of Auckland, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/2292/2381.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the archaeology and history of Te Puna, a Church Missionary Society (CMS) mission station in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand. Te Puna was first settled in 1832 following the closure of the nearby Oihi mission, which had been the first mission station and the first permanent European settlement in New Zealand. Te Puna, located alongside the imposing Rangihoua Pa, was the home of missionaries John and Hannah King and their children for some forty years. As well as being a mission station, Te Puna was also the site of the family’s subsistence farm. The research is concerned with the archaeological landscape of Te Puna, the relationship between Maori and European, the early organisation and economy of the CMS, the material culture of New Zealand’s first European settlers, and the beginnings of colonisation and the part that the missions played in this. Artefacts recovered from archaeological investigations at the site of the Te Puna mission house are connected with other items of missionary material culture held in collections in the Bay of Islands, including objects donated by the King family. The archaeological record is also integrated with documentary evidence, in particular the accounts of the CMS store, to produce a detailed picture of the daily life and economy of the Te Puna mission household. This integration of a range of sources is also extended to produce a broader view of the material culture and economy of missionary life in the Bay of Islands in the first half of the nineteenth century. The humble, austere artefacts that constitute the material culture of the Te Puna household reveal the actual processes of colonisation in daily life and everyday events, as well as the processes of the mission, such as schooling, the purchase of food and domestic labour, the purchase of land and building of houses, the stitching of fabric and ironing of garments. These practices predate, but also anticipate the grand historical dramas such as the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, glorified but also critiqued as the defining moment of the relationship between Maori and Pakeha and of colonisation.

Abstract:
This research study focuses on language and oral literature of the Punu people in the south of Gabon. The study explores the punu styles of literature in particular praise-poetry (devise), which has been, up to now, very rarely studied. Considered to be a form of praise by which an individual declaims his identity, praise-poetry allows an individual to stand out and express his vision of the world. This thesis is divided into five chapters which together provide a theoretical attempt of this literary genre in the society. Taking the notion of permanence as a defining criterion, the study highlights the discursive properties of praise-poetry and its functions. Added to this is a unique corpus of clan and individual praise poems, transcribed, translated and commented

Wilkins, Rex Richard. "El futuro ya está aquí: A Comparative Analysis of Punk in Spain and Mexico." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2018. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/6997.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the punk genre's evolution into commercial mainstream music in Spain and Mexico. It looks at how this evolution altered both the aesthetic and gesture of the genre. This evolution can be seen by examining four bands that followed similar musical and commercial trajectories. In Spain, Kaka de Luxe and Radio Futura; in Mexico, Size and Ritmo Peligroso. Since punk music's gesture is both visceral and political, various methods of suppressing or containing the punk gesture arise. For both Spain and Mexico, containing the punk gesture was a matter of government censorship in the early years of punk. By the late 1980s, neoliberalism, global tastes, and capitalist interests controlled the punk gesture more than governmental crackdown. The thesis concludes that while the punk gesture was contained for both political and economic reasons during the 1980s, the resurgence of the punk gesture in the 1990s is evidence of the genre's resilience in a capitalist and hegemonic environment.

Full text
Abstract:
Speakers are the ultimate arbiters of normalization (Vila [ed.] 2007). Hence, continued fieldwork research and is needed to track and evaluate whether the actual usage of specialized terminology is reflected in current proposals of normalization in Catalan (i.e., Institut d’Estudis Catalans and Termcat), especially in the oral register. To this end, the present thesis describes the use, the state of normalization and implementation of 35 Catalan terms taken from a technical sublanguage, namely that of motorcycling. To see whether these specialized terms constitute normalized lexical items, I first delve into the matter with a data study derived from the Catalan written and audiovisual media. This data analysis is subsequently complemented by linguistic survey of Catalan speakers who themselves are motorcyclists or are specialists in the field of motorcycling. The framework employed herein makes use of three-pronged approach: (a) terminology, (b) sociolinguistics, and (c) cognitive linguistics, since this latter approach affords a way to study the reasons behind speakers’ choices of lexical forms. The results of this study suggest that normalization of this specialized domain has not been achieved. I address this state of affairs with a new set of proposals based on cognitive lexicalization patterns uncovered in the item-by-item qualitative analysis.

The purpose of this thesis is to closely analyze some of the individual authorial voices that have emerged from contemporary Romanian cinema. Billed by the international critical establishment as a "New Wave," the recent slate of Romanian productions, while very successful on the international festival circuit, still lacks an apt conceptualization of the precise characteristics that set these new filmmakers apart, not only from other international directors, but also from one another. The analysis focuses on six recent productions: Stuffand Dough (2001), The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (2005) and Aurora (2010) by Cristi Puiu, 12:08 East of Bucharest (2006) and Police, Adjective (2010) by Corneliu Porumboiu, and The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu (2010) by Andrei Ujica, breaking down the individual authorial characteristics and thematic and stylistic concerns of each filmmaker and contextualizing them within the larger history of Romanian film, as well as the trajectories of international art cinema.

Abstract:
The main objective of this thesis is to comprehend the role of certain non-instrumental body movements related to music in the processes of both collective and individual identification, as well as in the formation and maintenance of a feeling of belonging to a group united mainly by a common musical genre. The movements, actions and body postures investigated are those performed by the musicians during the musical performance, excluding the sound-producing instrumental movements. Likewise, the movements made by the audience are analysed both as a reaction to the music and the concert and as part of the concert itself. Besides, these movements related to music present a high degree of automation. In addition, we consider that all body movement can be signified by the perceiving person. When approaching the corporal motor activity as a criterion in the construction of a group identity and as a catalyst for a feeling of belonging to a group, it is inescapable to investigate its socio-historical conditions of production, propagation, acquisition and learning. The concert is characterized by bodily contiguity, producing a set of social interactions based on face-to-face relationships. This kinetic bodily co-presence endows with meanings and affective possibilities to certain movements and corporal actions characterized especially by being collective and following implicit norms. The local scene - in this particular investigation the punk, hardcore and free improvisation scenes of Barcelona - is the sociocultural context in which the concert takes place, and at the same time the collective or community - since how we expose a local scene is, among other things , a group of people united by a sharing musical taste and musical practices — who will be the ultimate recipient of that feeling of belonging, as well as an environment delimited by identifying criteria, including those related to the body.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Computer Assisted Translation tools continue to become more ubiquitous, but translation students do not necessarily receive much training in using them, and may therefore find translating when using them very different to translating freehand. An experiment was conducted where a three Master’s students were each asked to translate two texts; one in a CAT tool and the other freehand, and the resulting target texts were inspected to determine whether they may have been affected by the segmentation performed by the CAT tool compared to freehand translations of the same text, and if so, how. There were indications that in certain cases, such as very long sentences, the CAT tool may act as a visual aid, and also indications that certain students may be more prone to follow the segmentation provided by the CAT tool than others. However, the influence of personal translator style and translator’s habitus cannot be disregarded and as such the differences that are apparent cannot be entirely attributed to the CAT tool.

Loison-Charles, Julie. "Les mots étrangers de Vladimir Nabokov." Thesis, Paris 10, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA100051/document.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis shows how central Nabokov’s multilingualism was to his prose in English: after authoring several works in Russian, the writer changed languages and then only wrote his novels in English. It was not merely a second language for him because Nabokov could write English before Russian and he had spoken it since childhood. Besides, he enjoyed a polyglot education and was fluent in French. This thesis studies Nabokov’s style in English by focusing on his linguistic creativity and by examining the founding role that translation played in how his several tongues were going to position themselves in relation to one another. Nabokov’s bilingual identity means that his writing both challenges and deviates from the norm: it is dappled with strangeness and foreignness. In his novels, foreign words irrupt in the midst of the English prose and, typographically and semantically, they destabilize the reading experience: code-switching is at the heart of this thesis and questions the relation between “the narrator’s tyranny” (Couturier) and his reader. English itself loses its familiarity and becomes a foreign language: Nabokov’s bilingualism means he is like a foreigner in this tongue; therefore he reveals the violence of language (Lecercle) and puts it into play through puns and neologisms. Nabokov is what Deleuze calls, thanks to a Proustian expression, a great writer: his books “are written in a kind of foreign language”

Thesis, Paris 4, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA040196.

Abstract:
This thesis proposes an analysis of a phraseme as a complex, stable, variable and dynamic linguistic sign, and as a translation problem based on a corpus of contemporary French literature and its Serbian translations. The discourse highlights the distance between the meaning of a model and the meaning of a phraseme that is semantically accomplished and embedded in a text. One of its possible realizations is a pun that does not only consist in transgressing the syntactic criteria but in developing a new global signified, serving the speaker’s discursive strategies. This work identifies linguistic mechanisms specific to lexical frozenness that are inevitable in the act of translation, and incompatibilities between the problems of translation and properties of a given phraseme. Its translation problems in a literary text, whose narrative progression it shapes, exceed the dichotomy between a domesticated translation and a foreignized translation. Translation problems result from the way in which the speaker establishes the link between the conceptualization inherent to a phraseme, built itself on the basis of pre-existing concepts - hence the mental image and the connotative surplus value - and the reality to which the speaker applies it. Its translation, given its pragma-semantic complexity, necessarily requires a source-oriented approach in the interpretative phase and a target-oriented solution

Tan, Song.

Abstract:
Northeastern Mandarin is a variety of Mandarin that is spoken in Northeastern China, a region formerly known as Manchuria. This variety of Mandarin is considered to be very close to the standard language and there exists only a few rigorous analyses regarding its specific characteristics. This thesis aims to describe and analyse the phonology, syntax and lexicon of Northeastern Mandarin spoken in the province of Liaoning (the most populous province of the Northeast), it was carried out on the basis of numerous field surveys allowing the collection of oral data recorded with speakers of different generations. Based on the precepts of functionalist theory and respecting the principle of relevance at the levels of the first and second articulation units, this work attempts to establish the phonological system of this variety by showing clearly its particularities. At the level of syntax, this thesis seeks to highlight grammatical specificities starting from real linguistic facts and focuses on lexical analysis which deals not only with lexemes specific to this variety, but also with the adaptation of borrowings. The influence of the standard language, through education, literature, and the media makes that Mandarin of the Northeast tends to get lost in formal context. The comparison with standard Mandarin is present throughout this work in order facilitate understanding of the changes, thus allowing to give an exact reflection of the vitality of this regiolect. With data which can be used by everyone, this thesis is for all linguits interested in Chinese dialectology or more broadly in Chinese linguistics whose research has continued to develop for many years

Tite, Matthew Charles Everingham. "The Discursive Construction of Punk: Language and Identity in Russia’s Punk-Rock ‘Subculture’." Thesis, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/2779.

Full text
Abstract:
Beginning in the mid 1980s the practices of Soviet youth became a scene of heightened academic interest as western scholars eagerly turned their attention to the changing ‘subcultural’ realities of youth in the wake of the relaxations introduced under Perestroika and Glasnost. Unfortunately, despite this growing interest, the Russian punk community has remained, predominantly on the periphery of scholarly inquiry. One can surmise, however, that a dominant reason for this has been the over-reliance on New Subcultural Theory, which marks many of these studies and which seeks to understand ‘subcultures’ in terms of their homogeneous values and symbolic resistance to a socio-structural Other within a rigid and vertical cultural model. This paradigm, when coupled with prominent western themes exhibited in the behaviour of Russian punks, has led to a somewhat anomalous understanding of this group’s existence and has championed the apparent drive within the academy to discredit both the punk community and its membership as little more than cultural mimics. By drawing on data collected from a Russian punk internet forum located at http://offtop.ru/punkforum, this exploratory grounded theory study investigates (1) how the community exists as a discursive space (2) how individual participants construct and put forward their self-presentation and, (3) to what extent may we consider that these presentations of self both construct, and are constructed by the community? The overall concern of the study is to consider whether a conceptual break from the notion of ‘subculture’ permits a fuller understanding of how individual members’ identities are both constructed by, and construct this particular punk community. The findings suggest that while members exhibit some general commonalities, there is significant diversity among them as well. A key finding is how members become “authentic” in relation to the punk idea, while taking part in the construction of that idea and the group as a whole. This presents a significant departure from the notion of ‘subculture’ and from common-place ideas about punk, namely that being punk involves little more than a style of dress and behaviours. Thus, this exploratory study implies that this Russian punk community is a dynamic discursive space within which identity must continuously be negotiated and renegotiated through language.

In an attempt to let medium level learners of Japanese language understand Japanese language characteristic and Japanese humor style by producing puns supplementary. It could provide them with different vocabulary learning methods and flexible thinking. This thesis is divided into 6 chapters. Chapter one introduces the statement of purpose、goals 、research contents and methods. According to my work experience, I met a Japanese person and he said some of Japanese puns on our conversation. It was so fun and impressed. I think it could be used in Japanese education to improve communication skills and interpersonal relationships with the Japanese people. Unfortunately, it was seldom mentioned in Japanese education area. Chapter two introduces literature reviews how Japanese puns work and effective in Japanese education does and the definition of Japanese puns. Meanwhile there are so many Japanese puns books in Japan. We could study them and understand the surface meaning and deep meaning. Chapter three classifies the Japanese puns and lists 20 examples for each type. Chapter four analyzes the questionnaire how Japanese office workers use the Japanese puns. By this analysis, we wish to put what we have learned into good use. Chapter five presents the supplementary material 、 teaching proposals and check points. Chapter six presents the conclusion of this thesis, including the research results and prospects of the future.

Boyer, Julie.

Abstract:
In the youth speech of Mexico a frequent use of phonic wordplays that transform or substitute lexemes and phrases without significant alteration of the signifier are found among linguistic vitality signs. This linguistic phenomenon uses three phonic techniques: parasitic suffixation, lexical substitution based on phonic similarity and echo chaining. This report contributes by filling a void in the scientific literature and to expose this overlooked phenomenon by exploring its formal linguistic aspects and social functions. The aim of this study is to establish the relationship between linguistic structure and linguistic and social functions inherent to phonic wordplay use. The empiric study conducted in Puebla (Mexico) allowed the collection of a corpus of more than two hundred phonic wordplays and the realization of sociolinguistic interviews with eighteen Puebla youth, who employ the studied expressions. This work proposes a classification of the corpus based on their formal structure in order to highlight that the phenomenon conforms to fixed patterns of construction. After a thematic analysis of the interviews, with an emphasis on phonic wordplay examples, we observe that the use of phonic wordplays mainly accomplishes poetic and ludic, as well as social cohesion and identity functions. This study confirms that the non-normative and cryptic characteristics intrinsic to phonic wordplays help to reinforce the aforementioned social functions as an argotic speech.
