Abstract:
I work in the film business, making animated films with puppets. These films are not cartoons, yet neither are they quite live puppetry; they are a blend of both. Puppet animation is a performance, as much as any live presentation is; but it is a performance that is recorded in time, frame by frame. The moving, living character exists only on film. The puppet performance must somehow be created outside of time. Each second of movement is broken down into as many as twenty-four separate poses. The animator must live … feel … and act … in small steps of time.

According to Teréz Virág (1998) a psychologist with regard to the 'mysteries' of the power of the puppet, three different spheres are worth investigating, namely the mysteries of the puppets, that of the child who plays with the object, and that of the puppeteer's. She views puppetry as creation, the puppeteer as the life-giver, and the puppet as an object of transition. When the aim is to develop the artistic methods as well as explore the 'general utility' of puppetry, it is worth further focusing on segments such as the making of the puppet, acting with the puppet, and perceiving the puppet

The puppets of Silvan Omerzu problematise life by staging death. In his 20 years of making puppet shows for adults, the puppet has travelled from the grotesque image, rapid movement and playful violence to the ascetic minimalistic world, both in its image and its movement. Omerzu’s latest show, Salto mortale, depicts the immortality of puppets. This complex puppet world can be described by Das Unheimliche, which best captures the staging of death no matter whether it is carried out in a playful, mysterious or anxious atmosphere. Abstract:
AbstractSocial media platforms enable largely unrestricted many-to-many communication. In times of crisis, they offer a space for collective sense-making and give rise to new social phenomena (e.g., open-source investigations). However, they also serve as a tool for threat actors to conduct Cyber-enabled Social Influence Operations (CeSIOs) to shape public opinion and interfere in decision-making processes. CeSIOs employ sock puppet accounts to engage authentic users in online communication, exert influence, and subvert online discourse. Large Language Models (LLMs) may further enhance the deceptive properties of sock puppet accounts. Recent LLMs can generate targeted and persuasive text, which is, for the most part, indistinguishable from human-written content—ideal features for covert influence. This article reviews recent developments at the intersection of LLMs and influence operations, summarizes LLMs’ salience, and explores the potential impact of LLM-instrumented sock puppet accounts for CeSIOs. Finally, mitigation measures for the near future are highlighted.

Critically acclaimed as a milestone of Spanish cinema, Surcos (Furrows, J.A. Nieves Conde, 1951) is the film that single-handedly revolutionized Spanish cinema by introducing the spirit of Neorealism and Film Noir. Through a comparative analysis of the famous boarding sequence of Citizen Kane and few examples from Roberto Rossellini’s early films, this chapter argues that the film’s apparent appropriation of Italian neorealism and also Film Noir and, particularly, its internal strife between its progressive neorealist aesthetic and its fascist message, comes into sharper focus when seen through the lens of kitsch aesthetics. Despite its neorealist and noir appearance, Surcos is in fact a kitsch film that encapsulates Spanish fascist ideology even more insidiously than the previous ones precisely by not being an overtly propagandistic film.

Abstract:
Athens was the leader, along with the Aetolians, of the Greeks’ first resistance to Macedon after Alexander the Great’s death, the Lamian War. But the Greeks lost. In this chapter I trace the gradual weakening of Athenian democratic structures in the subsequent decades. Democracy came and went. It was replaced successively by an oligarchy, by a regime of a Macedonian puppet ruler called Demetrius of Phalerum, by the tyranny of Lachares, and by the increasingly autocratic moves of Demetrius Poliorcetes in those periods when he had control of the city. But between these non-democratic stretches, the Athenians always restored democracy – most famously in 286 by armed rebellion, when they had the support of Egyptian troops. The return of democracy was always heralded with great enthusiasm, but in fact over the decades democratic structures were gradually undermined, not least by the increasing control wealthy members of society had over the administration. I also cover the importance of garrisons for Macedonian control of Athens and other Greek states.

Abstract:
What is it? Robin (n.d.) defines digital storytelling as “the practice of using computer-based tools to tell stories”, stressing that “they all revolve around the idea of combining the art of telling stories with a variety of multimedia, including graphics, audio, video, and Web publishing” (n.p.). Ohler (2009) suggests that “digital storytelling […] uses personal digital technology to combine a number of media into a coherent narrative” (p. 15). Very often, digital storytelling involves some kind of video production (see examples on https://digitalstorytelling.coe.uh.edu). Including stories and storytelling for language learning barely needs justification. The ability to tell a story is important in many life settings, from hanging out with friends to selling a product. But why digital storytelling? In 1996 The New London Group argued that the traditional perspective on literacy should be extended to encompass a broader range of meaning-making practices, including those involving digital media. In a similar vein, The Douglas Fir Group (2016) argues that “language learning is semiotic learning” (p. 27), and goes beyond the acquisition of words and structures. While engaging in digital storytelling, learners practise the target language in a potentially highly motivating context, use the target language and other linguistic resources to engage in discussion and negotiation about the process, and in the production of their stories (e.g. in a task-based language teaching tradition); also extending their repertoire of meaning-making resources through practice and reflection – cf. The New London Group’s (1996) notion of critical framing. Students of many different levels of proficiency can create engaging digital stories – from the A1-level primary school student telling a story via the Puppet Pals app, to the adult language learner engaging in a complex cross-media storytelling project.
