Abstract:
Lorenzo Monaco's striking fifteenth-century portrayal of the stigmatisation of St. Francis was once owned by the art collector Otto Lanz. What prompted Lanz to buy Monaco's painting in the 1920s? Was it simply because he saw it as a beautiful, unique work of art? Or was there something more-could Lanz have been drawn in by the mystical experience that the painting depicts? In this essay, Henk van Os attempts to uncover the motivation for Otto Lanz's purchase, in the process raising provocative questions about our relationship to religious art in a more secular era.

Payne, Mark. Fidelity and Farewell. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198805823.003.0012.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter looks at the idea of the event in ‘textual events’. Reading lyric is an encounter with a set of singular ethical gestures. Neither formalism nor cultural poetics adequately describes the experience of shared life in the practice of giving our time to these gestures, whereas the event, as it has been theorized from Heidegger to Badiou, does open up some ways of understanding the purchase on our own historicity that this experience affords. The chapter shows what is at stake in the encounter with what Hermann Fränkel called the ‘enchanted circle’ of Pindar’s ethicality through an examination of the force of gestures toward fidelity and leave-taking in his poems, which gestures are compared with signature ethical gestures of Sappho, Wordsworth, Baudelaire, and Celan.

Abstract:
‘Oedipus’ considers the Oedipus complex, a pivotal but much criticized idea in psychoanalysis. Freud suggested the ancient story of the murder of the father and union with the mother has such power because it resonates with a psychic truth about archaic states of mind in all of us. The psychological, anthropological, and political implications of Freud’s account have been much explored. It can be argued that with its focus upon such core triangular relationships in the mind it affords a useful perspective, and one with considerable purchase on psychic truth and people’s lived experience. Whatever the particular familial details, analysts would argue, the Oedipus complex plays a fundamental part in personality structuring.

Kant, Tanya. Making it Personal. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190905088.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The encounter of “personalized experiences”—targeted advertisements, tailored information feeds, and “recommended” content, among other things—is now a common and somewhat inescapable component of digital life. More often than not however, “you” the user are not primarily responsible for personalizing your web engagements: instead, with the help of your search, browsing, and purchase histories, your “likes,” your click-throughs, and a multitude of other data you produce as you go about your day, your experience can “conveniently”—and computationally—be personalized on your behalf. This book explores a host of new questions that emerge from web users’ encounters with these forms of algorithmic personalization. What do users “know” about the algorithms that apparently “know” them? If personalization practices seek to act on users’ behalf (for instance, by deciding what content is personally relevant), then how do users retain or relinquish their autonomy? Indeed, what kinds of selfhoods are made possible when personalization algorithms intervene in identity construction? Making It Personal is the first full-length monograph to critically analyze the sociocultural implications of algorithmic personalization through the accounts and testimonies of web users themselves. At the heart of the book are interviews and focus groups with web users who—through a myriad of resistant, tactical, resigned, or trusting engagements—encounter algorithmic personalization as part of their lived experience on the web. The book proposes that for those who encounter it, algorithmic personalization creates new implications for knowledge production, autonomy, cultural capital, and formations of self.

Ackerly, Brooke A. Feminist Grounded Normative Theory and Methodology. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190662936.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
In order to take on global injustice as a problem of injustice itself, a political theory of responsibility requires a methodology for guiding the taking of responsibility for injustice. Chapter 4 provides the feminist theoretical basis for the methodological approach of the book. A feminist grounded normative political theory uses a feminist critical methodology to identify differences in perspectives on injustice. These might reflect differences in how groups experience injustice. In feminist grounded political theory, we treat the space between differences as at once a space of inquiry and a site from which to gain critical purchase on previously normalized exploited power inequalities. The chapter illustrates the role of feminist social criticism in light of the limitations of injustice itself.

Stewart, Larry. Physics on Show: Entertainment, Demonstration, and Research in the Long Eighteenth Century. Edited by Jed Z. Buchwald and Robert Fox. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199696253.013.11.

Full text
Abstract:
This article explores how public performances, research, and devices of demonstration put physics on show during the long eighteenth century. It first considers how demonstration machines made physics real to an amateur audience, how philosophical instrument-makers essentially manufactured the market for public performance, and how entertainment provided by experimental lectures evolved into engagement of many kinds. It then discusses the reactions of audiences to lectures, focusing on the experience of one lecturer: James Dinwiddie. It suggests that those captivated by experimental drama in a cosmopolitan Europe were further drawn to the instrument-makers’ shops. Many sought out apparatus that transformed amusement into their own exploration of nature. While dissemination in the physical sciences clearly had much to do with this commerce in devices, the purchase of apparatus was almost as anonymous as attendance at lectures.

Ayson, Robert. The Anarchical Society and the Control of Global Violence. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198779605.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
In The Anarchical Society Bull treats violent conflict as a feature of international politics that cannot be abolished, but must be managed. With appropriate rules, which are often informal, managed violence can approximate an institution of international society. Bull’s treatment of violence reflects his earlier study of strategy and arms control, displayed in his classic The Control of the Arms Race. His arguments about the control of global violence still have purchase in a world where the superpower nuclear arms competition is no longer the central international security challenge. As America’s difficult experience in the Middle East indicates, states need to observe rules of restraint on violence even when dealing with violent non-state actors. Today’s Asia, strained by the competition between China and the United States, can only have peace and prosperity if there are rules which restrain violence. An accidental and unmanaged equilibrium of power will not do.

Hayes, Margo. Small Cattle for Small Farms. CSIRO Publishing, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643095793.

Full text
Abstract:
There are more small farms in Australia than there are large, and this trend continues as an increasing number of larger farms are subdivided into smaller parcels. A growing demand for lifestyle blocks, in Australia and overseas, is fuelling an interest in the quieter, smaller breeds of cattle which have particular appeal as they are more manageable to control and maintain. Small Cattle for Small Farms is ideal for those people considering buying a small farm for lifestyle or commercial purposes. Written in response to the many questions the author was asked by those seeking to purchase small cattle, this practical and easy to understand guide provides an excellent introduction to small farming. The book assumes no prior experience with cattle, and covers all the basics to help you set up your small farm, including: types of cattle available, how to select your stock and care for them, stocking rates, fencing needs, vaccination requirements, methods of identification, and government requirements for land and stockowners. For those wishing to show their cattle, there is a chapter explaining how to prepare for competitions. A section on marketing details how to make a successful entry into the commercial beef industry, and a list of cattle organisations directs readers to more specific information for their chosen breeds.

Abstract:
The business of journalism has an extensive, storied, and often romanticized history. Newspaper reporting has long shaped the way that we see the world, played key roles in exposing scandals, and has even been alleged to influence international policy. The past several years have seen the newspaper industry in a state of crisis, with Twitter and Facebook ushering in the rise of citizen journalism and a deprofessionalization of the industry, plummeting readership and revenue, and municipal and regional papers shuttering or being absorbed into corporate behemoths. Now billionaires, most with no journalism experience but lots of power and strong views, are stepping in to purchase newspapers, both large and small. This addition to the What Everyone Needs to Know® series looks at the past, present and future of journalism, considering how the development of the industry has shaped the present and how we can expect the future to roll out. It addresses a wide range of questions, from whether objectivity was only a conceit of late twentieth century reporting, largely behind us now; how digital technology has disrupted journalism; whether newspapers are already dead to the role of non-profit journalism; the meaning of “transparency” in reporting; the way that private interests and governments have created their own advocacy journalism; whether social media is changing journalism; the new social rules of old media outlets; how franchised media is addressing the problem of disappearing local papers; and the rise of citizen journalism and hacker journalism. It will even look at the ways in which new technologies potentially threaten to replace journalists.

Kaaháni Worl, Rosita. Alaska. Edited by Frederick E. Hoxie. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199858897.013.31.

Abstract:
This chapter offers an overview of the experiences of the four major cultural groups within the borders of modern Alaska: Eskimos (Yup’ik, Inupiat), Aleuts, Athabaskans, and the Haida and Tlingit Indians. After describing the nature of precontact Alaskan cultures, the chapter describes the era of Russian rule (dominated by the trade in sea otters, the violent subjugation of the Aleuts, and the advent of Russian Orthodox missionaries), the American purchase and its aftermath, the Second World War, and the tumultuous events accompanying the admission of Alaska to statehood in 1958. Throughout their encounter with outsiders, the indigenous peoples of Alaska have struggled with the introduction of new diseases, assaults on their subsistence traditions, and struggles over land ownership. The Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (1971) has ushered in a new period of improvement even though the state’s Native people continue to struggle with the ongoing effects of colonialism.

Abstract:
This chapter explores Matthew’s book collection, showing how the experience of developing libraries in Oxford and Bristol shaped his own book collecting. Rare Frankfurt book catalogues offer an invaluable insight into how Matthew purchased some of his books, while other sources point to a network of booksellers in York, London, and Oxford dealing in new and in second-hand books. This chapter also examines the guiding principles behind Matthew’s book collecting, seeing how these evolved over Matthew’s career. Matthew owned one of the largest private collections of books in early modern England, and this chapter explores contemporary ideas of what a library was and whether Matthew aspired to create one. The chapter concludes by examining the network of friends, colleagues, and patrons reflected in gifts to his library, asking how Matthew, and others, presented themselves through the marks of ownership they made in their books.
