Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop a purchasing-logistics integration (PLI) conceptualization along two dimensions: mutual responsibility and integrative efforts. This conceptualization is then tested as to whether it provides any insights for supplier performance. Design/methodology/approach Information-Processing Theory is used to posit hypotheses linking the dimensions of PLI with various measures of supplier performance. Hypotheses are then tested with a dyadic data set of purchasing and logistics managers, using multiple regression methods. Findings Purchasing managers found mutual responsibility to positively influence supplier delivery speed, whereas logistics managers found it to positively influence supplier price performance. Generally speaking, purchasing managers perceived a stronger linkage between formal integrative efforts (liaison roles and joint reward systems) and supplier performance, whereas logistics managers perceived this linkage to be stronger for informal integrative efforts such as information exchange and collaboration. Research limitations/implications Study results are cross-sectional in nature and consist of three major industry groupings. The dyadic data were analyzed separately to avoid significant data loss. Practical implications Supply chain managers will find the areas where purchasing and logistics managers overlap in their perceptions (as well as where they differ) useful. In addition, an understanding of how PLI influences supplier performance should help improve organizational effectiveness. Originality/value PLI is a highly important, yet understudied, internal connection. This study provides a useful framework in helping academics and practitioners better understand this crucial internal connection, and how it relates to the performance extracted from suppliers.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this viewpoint is to analyze the emergence of a modified equilibrium in the relationship between buyers (“shippers”) and suppliers (“providers”) of logistical services. In the 1990s, the logistical service providers (LSPs) had relatively little power and were often asked to perform basic operations. The situation has evolved as a result of proactive strategies implemented by some forward-thinking LSPs. In this viewpoint, the emphasis is on the strategies developed by shippers which the authors labeled the “ramp effect”. Design/methodology/approach The authors discuss the impact of the ramp effect on LSPs’ innovation processes. This viewpoint is based on the authors’ experience in the field, on a literature review focused on the logistics industry and on the purchasing strategies applied to logistical services. Findings The authors show that the buyers of logistical services have lost some of their power because of two main factors: LSPs’ embeddedness in the shipper’s supply chain and the transformation of LSPs into orchestrators (labeled fourth-party logistics). This viewpoint discusses the relational disequilibrium between shippers and LSPs rather than the cooperative relationships between them. Originality/value The ramp effect as a source of innovation and proactive strategies for LSPs has never been covered in the management literature. This viewpoint provides both academics and practitioners with a different perspective of the relational disequilibrium between buyers and sellers of logistical services.

Abstract:
Today, growing and changing competitive conditions, products, and services, free movement of labor, and businesses with the information they develop strategies that create value to obtain a competitive advantage. Now, final buyers have the convenience of purchasing the products they demand with the features and conditions they want and at the price they accept. In such an environment, businesses use their supply chain and logistics activities more effectively and efficiently than their competitors. Today, achieving a strategic superiority in a global market where the content and quality of the products are the same is only possible by delivering the desired products to the customer at the desired price, at the desired time, in the desired amount, through the right channel, as quickly as possible and without any damage. In such a situation, the desire to focus on the main activities of the enterprises, the need for effective logistics operations, etc. logistics outsourcing has increased rapidly for reasons. Businesses can carry out logistics activities requiring expertise thanks to third party logistics (3PL) service providers in the field such as transportation, storage, customs clearance, without investing in logistics. For logistics outsourcing to be beneficial, a correct logistics service provider must be selected under the needs of the business. Selecting the right logistics service provider is important in increasing the benefit of outsourcing. In this study neutrosophic AHP was used to prioritize the factors.

Abstract:
Purpose Despite the important role of distrust in predicting the intention to use, existing literature has not studied the impact of distrust on the buyer’s integration with suppliers and their e-procurement usage in the B2B context, creating major gaps in the e-procurement theory. The purpose of this paper is to fill the gaps in the literature by examining the role and impact of distrust in the e-procurement context. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected through a web-based survey of purchasing professionals in the USA. ANOVA was used to compare the level of distrust among companies. In addition, the measurement model and hypotheses were tested using the structural equation modeling method. Findings Empirical findings indicate if buyers have uncertainty or negative expectation on the reliability and capability of the supplier in e-procurement systems, they would tend to hesitate to use e-procurement for purchasing. Furthermore, distrust also inhibits buyers from strengthening the supplier integration through sharing operational and logistics information and collaborating in new product development and purchasing process. Research limitations/implications This paper discovers the vital role of distrust in the e-procurement context. Distrust has a significant impact on a company’s cooperation and commitment with business partners. Additionally, to improve the supplier integration, it is important not only to use e-procurement applications but also to have a mechanism to lower the buyers’ distrust level in e-procurement systems. Practical implications Realizing the important role of distrust, e-procurement vendors could improve the supplier selection process by allowing buyers to review the supplier’s reliability and capability, and to interact with the supplier before making any online purchase. Vendors could also build a better supplier verification system and collaborative mechanism to reduce buyers’ distrust issues. Originality/value Despite the important role of distrust in predicting the intention to use, existing literature has not studied the impact of distrust on the buyer’s integration with suppliers and their e-procurement usage in the B2B context, creating major gaps in the e-procurement theory. Abstract:
An important function in purchasing is the disposal of excess material. Often the material is in the form of waste products such as paper, metals and plastics which are difficult to value. However, by utilizing a commodity‐market based approach, many items can now be disposed of in a timely, profitable and environmentally friendly manner. This paper discusses some of the issues involved in disposing of surplus material using commodity indices. The discussion also shows how surplus asset disposal is linked to developments in environmental logistics, reverse logistics and recycling. The general methods, issues and challenges in commodity disposal have been explained through a case study. The case study includes a total cost model showing the costs and the benefits of commodity based or commodity indexed disposal.

Abstract:
This paper presents a method of generating a business strategy using value chain analysis. There were 186 manufacturing and industrial enterprises from the Czech Republic. The analysis was carried out using mathematical–statistical methods (dimensional reduction, logit regression and its transformation in order to objectify the opinion level of the managers) and with a neural network in terms of validation of the results of the mathematical–statistical methods. The aim was to determine the significance of different parts of the value chain in terms of their impact on the profitability of an enterprise and to demonstrate its important role in the process of generating business strategy. The significance for the profitability of the enterprises was statistically proven in the area of scientific and technological development, input logistics and human resource management. These parts were identified by the authors as the golden triangle of manufacturing and industry. Purchasing and output logistics were identified as the parts with a negative impact to the profitability of the enterprises. Strong underestimation of scientific and technological development by the top managers of the manufacturing and industrial enterprises is seen as a very negative finding. Neural networks showed higher statistical sensitivity compared to the mathematical–statistical methods (dimensional reduction and logit regression). They defined the value sector chain with the following structure (ranked from the highest degree of positive impact on the profitability of the enterprise): human resource management, scientific and technological development, production, input logistics, purchasing, material management, output logistics, enterprise infrastructure, marketing and sales, service and other supporting services. In conclusion, it is stated that the sector value chain of manufacturing and industrial enterprises will be further decomposed into value chain models of specific industries of the production and industry, such as engineering and construction, intended for direct use in different business entities to generate their unique value chains and corporate strategies.

Abstract:
Purpose Sustainability-related risk management of logistics service providers (LSPs) is an essential part of sustainability performance of focal companies, as logistics services touch the entire supply chain (SC) – from raw material sources to end-customers. The purpose of this paper, draws on resource-based view and stakeholder theory in exploring how companies can manage environmental and social sustainability-related risks from logistics service suppliers. This kind of capability is essential in order to maintain reputation in the eyes of stakeholders, and to maintain long-term financial performance. Design/methodology/approach The data of this multiple-case study were collected from semi-structured interviews in eight case-companies in Finland. Five of the cases are primary logistics buyers, and three represent LSP companies. Findings The cross-case analysis showed that primary buyers of logistics services use their sustainability criteria as a prerequisite for LSP candidates, and when the level is adequate and equal, other factors, e.g. price and capacity, are decisive. Based on the analysis, large LSPs are preparing for the future competition, and act in a more sustainable manner than their customers (buyers) expect at the moment, while small LSPs strictly comply with the regulation. However, buyers’ requirements for sustainable logistics services are increasing as the stakeholder expectations for comprehensively sustainable SCs are growing. Originality/value Only little research has been conducted on sustainable logistics from the buyer company’s risk management perspective. This paper adds the knowledge of sustainability-related risk management in purchasing of logistics services and in the logistics industry.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to identify the key success factors that affect Thai entrepreneurial competitiveness in logistics business operations. Four main parameters and twelve variables were first identified from both a literature review and observations from the Thai context, and were then explored. The methodology of this research began with a literature review. Fifty entrepreneurs in the logistics sector then filled out questionnaires, which were analyzed using a mean and standard deviation (SD) model. Results showed that the responses were in the agreed level in which the mean=2.89 and SD=0.35. The mean of the variable Thailand Infrastructure is still incomplete, was 2.94. The mean of Fuel Prices still Continuously Increase, was 2.90; and the mean of Thai Entrepreneurs Mainly Use Road Transportation was 2.84. Responses showed the mean of the variable Thai Entrepreneurs Have Too Little Understanding of Effective Transportation System, was 3.04. The mean of Thai Entrepreneurs Lack Knowledge and Skills about Just-in-Time Concept, was 2.79; and the mean of the Logistics Management is Separately Managed, the Collaboration in each Department is Low, was 2.58. The mean of Domestic Laws and Regulations are not Competitive was 3.03. The mean of Cross-border Trade and Regulations need to be revamped, was 2.94; and the mean of International Transportation Rules must be changed, was 2.73. The mean of Thai Logistics Workforce Lacks Logistics Management Skills and Experience, was 3.45. The mean of Thai Logistics Workforce Productivity is Lower than Entrepreneurs’ Expectations, was 2.97 and the mean of English Proficiency of Thai Logistics Workforce is Low, was 2.73. Thai entrepreneurs need to improve their competitiveness by focusing on the key factors that affect logistics business success, such as figuring out how to cut operational management costs, improve ineffective inventory management and improve the quality of workforce skills and knowledge. Transportation costs are still high, and since these costs are influenced by Government policies, Thai entrepreneurs need the Government to establish plans for infrastructure investment, such as by focusing on rail transportation rather than relying on roads. This would help entrepreneurs to enhance their competitiveness and provide excellent customer service. Effective inventory management requires both upstream and downstream development because inventory management involves more than just one function, such as the purchasing department or workin-process responsibilities, so all functions should work together. Inventory management success requires good collaboration with suppliers, transportation providers, distributors, and customers.

Abstract:
Introduction. The article is devoted to the formation of a theoretical concept about the loyalty of consumers in the distribution channels of finished products as some complex economic phenomenon. The article addresses the problem of distribution channels and their effective formation which is one of the utmost importance at present time. The results showed that distribution channels are an important link in the value chain, which contribute to achieving a balance of interests of functionally related businesses that ensure the delivery of goods from producer to consumer. It is determined that the recent changes in the activities of wholesale and retail intermediaries are associated with changes in purchasing behavior, the development of network retail, the emergence of new forms and methods of selling goods, the active use of information technology and online interaction. Goal. Development of conceptual provisions for business cooperation in marketing distribution channels. Results. It is substantiated that the traditional market space, dominated by the manufacturer, is evolving and is now taking the form of what is called a market space focused on distribution. It is proved that within this space there is a shift of emphasis from competitive relations between participants of distribution channels to relations of cooperation and partnership. This requires the development of new mechanisms of interaction in such distribution channels, taking into account the economic interests of their participants and ensuring consistency of action based on the concept of business cooperation. It is noted in the article that the need to expand the boundaries of interaction arises due to the need to increase the efficiency of enterprises through the possibility of using the skills, resources and assets of business partners. It is proved that cooperation in modern conditions becomes the basis for ideas generation, innovations development, and a source of sustainable competitive advantages that contribute to the formation of a unique strategic asset – a partnership network based on a long-term mutually beneficial relationships of business partners in the chain of created value. At the same time, the refusal to cooperate leads to differences in the interests, goals and functions of participants in marketing distribution channels, which entails conflicts and increases costs in the process of delivery of goods from producer to final consumer.

Abstract:
The modernization of traditional manufacturing industries and service industries, organization of trading and purchasing procedures, related financial and logistics operations, changes in consumption patterns in the presence of thorough penetration of information technologies and digitalization of economic processes creates the basis for forming new markets and new conditions of their operation. One of the effects of global technological changes and digitalization of consumer experience was the development of a new form of trade and property relations – a share economy. Reorientation of consumer behavior from purchasing to sharing, exclusion of intermediaries from a “client – contractor” chain, strengthening the role of online reputation and self-regulation of the community to ensure the quality of services revolutionize a business model in many areas. Digital share economies will evolve and transform over the next few years. In this regard, it becomes important to study the essence, principles of functioning, and development of new business models.

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this research is to analyse the LSQ in the context of three different omni-channel purchasing scenarios while considering four dimensions (timeliness, availability, condition and return of the product) and to assess their impact on customer satisfaction and loyalty. In addition, an evaluation of the relationship between satisfaction and loyalty in the mentioned omni-channel scenarios is investigated.Design/methodology/approachA mixed two-phase research methodology is proposed: an initial qualitative analysis with six focus groups followed by quantitative research through surveys with a sample of 323 individuals. The proposed scales were tested for three purchase scenarios: “buy-online-ship-direct” (BOSD), “buy-online-pickup-in-store” (BOPS) and “buy-in-store-ship-direct” (BSSD). The data were analysed using partial-least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) techniques.FindingsIn an omni-channel context, the most important element of the logistics service deriving in satisfaction was timeliness for all the scenarios. The return-of-product dimension of LSQ was relevant for satisfaction in “ship-direct” scenarios, while the availability dimension was only relevant for customer loyalty in the BOPS scenario. Customer satisfaction had a positive impact on loyalty in the three purchasing scenarios.Practical implicationsThese results might provide guidance to managers in order to improve not only logistics procedures and processes but also their relationships with their customers. Moreover, retailers need to account for return policies in ship-direct channels, prioritize punctuality and adapt delivery terms to ensure product availability.Originality/valueThis work represents a progress in LSQ research in the B2C omni-channel environment by extending its study to a previously untested purchasing scenario (BOSD) and including a fundamental and insufficiently explored dimension of the LSQ: the return.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to develop a model for estimating the urban logistics improvements potential based on success factors of intermodal urban transport. There were two aspects considered for building the urban logistics time efficiency model: achieving an improved transport capacity without purchasing new vehicles, and transferring responsibility of poor shipment planning to its owners by implementing the intermodal transport success factors. The model is to establish functional relationship among the shipment distribution requests (urbanization) and urban logistics inefficiencies management (market inconsistencies), and their impact on business operations. The applicability of the proposed model was tested on urban population growth data and time inefficiencies in urban distribution. The results provide both theoretical and practical confirmation of time efficiency importance of urban logistics and potential for introduction of new intermodal solutions in urban logistics. Different case scenarios for Sarajevo prove that reducing inefficiencies in urban logistics could reduce the number of delivery vehicles by less than a half. Since the delivery vehicles are sources of pollution, the subsequent conclusion is valid for externalities levels. The model, therefore, complements the existing knowledge and represents a practical tool for urban planners and logistics professionals for creating an efficient, innovative, and integrative approach to the development of urban logistics services.

In the modern industrial environment, Quality is a necessary condition for enterprises to gain survives. The expectant quality of consumers is not only the tangible part but extending the perceived service quality in process of purchasing. Many organizations started to search for Quality and Customer Satisfaction due to the long-term competition advantage. This study tries to search for the perceived gap between Quality and Customer Satisfaction of customers. We test these proposed gaps using survey data collected from a group of Taiwan logistic enterprises and find support for the gaps based on the results of the artificial neural network. We can find the aspects for logistics businesses to strengthen their competitive ability. Abstract:
PurposeE-commerce last-mile logistics is undergoing dramatic changes. By inviting consumers to participate in self-collection, they collectively form a mass crowd of resources that can be integrated into last-mile logistics. However, consumers' participation may lead to a spectrum of value outcomes from value co-creation to co-destruction. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to critically examine the value formation process focussing on micro-level practices and resource outcomes.Design/methodology/approachAnchored on practice theory and resource conservation theory, content analysis is adopted to analyse 546 practice-based experiences extracted from a leading social media platform.FindingsThe analysis reveals five sequential practices of self-collection: purchasing, delivering, notifying, receiving and confirming. Furthermore, the co-created practices are characterised by gains in material, esteem, social and energy resources of the interacting actors. Meanwhile, the co-destructed practices cause a chain of resource losses, where the interacting actors suffer primary losses which subsequently triggers consumers' coping behaviours and further destroys resources for all.Research limitations/implicationsFocussing on constituent service practices, this study zooms into the value formation process. The authors contribute to logistics literature with a service-dominant logic by stressing end-consumers' involvement in the creation and consumption of last-mile logistics.Originality/valueThis study conceptualises the sources and consequences of the nuanced service practices (value formation or destruction) of self-collection. A unified framework is thus proposed, which guides logistics service providers to channel consumers towards more constructive participation in last-mile logistics.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine high-tech small-to-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) supply chain partnerships. Partnerships are considered at the level of business function rather than the entire organisation. Second, the drivers of SMEs to engage in partnerships are assessed to see whether functions engage in partnerships for different reasons. Third, performance per function is assessed to see the differential effect of partnerships on the function’s performance. Design/methodology/approach In this study, the relationship between the drivers of SMEs to engage in partnerships, four types of partnerships (marketing and sales, research and development (R&D), purchasing and logistics, and production) and four types of functional performances of firms (marketing and sales, R&D, purchasing and logistics, and production) are examined. The data have been collected from 279 SMEs. The proposed hypotheses are tested using structural equation modelling. Findings The results indicate that there are considerable differences between business functions in terms of the degree of involvement in partnerships and the effect of partnerships on the performance of these functions. This paper contributes to research by explaining the contradictory results of partnerships on SMEs performance. Practical implications This study helps firms understand which type of partnership should be established based on the firm’s drivers to engage in supply chain partnership; and which partnership has a significant effect on which type of business performance of the firm. Originality/value The originality of this study is to investigate the relationship between different drivers to engage in supply chain partnership and different types of partnerships and different functional performance of firm in a single model.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to examine the opportunity for third-party logistics providers (3PLs) to develop further value-added services for their clients, focused on purchasing. The provider perspectives on third-party purchase (3PP) services are examined in conjunction with their business environment, with a survey informed by transaction cost economics. Design/methodology/approach New Zealand 3PL providers were surveyed, and 166 responses were received. Structural equation modeling was used to test the conceptual model. Findings From the perspective of 3PL providers, uncertainty, frequency and transaction size, but not asset specificity, are significantly associated with client value from a 3PP service. While asset specificity in investments is not required by 3PLs, they need a high frequency of orders, sufficient order size and low levels of uncertainty as supporting conditions for the development of 3PP services. Research limitations/implications The sample focuses on 3PL providers and therefore does not address the behavioral characteristics of users or customers of the services. Originality/value This study shows that 3PP services may be further developed by 3PL providers to improve the value offered to their clients.

Abstract:
Environmental issues have been critical concern among the current businesses as various business activities might pose significant threats to the environment. Incorporating environmental aspects in business operations is perceived to be able to create value and to achieve sustainable business performance. The manufacturing sector is the key contributor to the country’s high pollution index. Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) practices have become more prevalent in this sector in managing the environmental issues for the effectiveness of their production requirement. Nevertheless, the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) mainly are less likely to embark on environmental practices as compared to large organisations. The establishment of certified environmental management systems (EMS) is considered as a strategic management approach that defines how organisations will address their impact on the natural environment guided by ISO 14001 as a framework. This study provides empirical evidence examining the extent of GSCM practices among the SMEs through the possession of ISO 14001 and examines the impact on sustainability performance. Data were analysed using regression analyses. Results indicate that GSCM practices have a significant positive relation with sustainability performance. Eco-design practices and environmental cooperation have a positive relationship with sustainability performance. There is no relationship between green purchasing and reverse logistics practices with sustainability performance. These results imply that Malaysian SMEs adopt GSCM practices mostly through eco-design and robust cooperation among departments in dealing with environmental issues. Green practices and reverse logistics practices are still new for SMEs and do not contribute to achieving better performance.

Abstract:
This paper proposes an agent-based model for evaluating the effect of business interoperability on the performance of cooperative supply chain networks. The model is based on insights from the Industrial Marketing and Purchasing network approach and the complex systems theory perspective. To demonstrate its applicability, an explanatory case study regarding a Portuguese reverse logistics cooperative supply chain network is presented. Face-to-face interviews and forms were used to collect data. The findings show that the establishment of appropriate levels of business interoperability has helped to reduce several non-value-added interaction processes and consequently improve the operational performance of the Valorpneu network. Regarding the research implications, this paper extends the current knowledge on business interoperability and an important problem in business: how business interoperability gaps in dyadic organizational relationships affect the network of companies that the two companies belong to—network effect. In terms of practical implications, managers can use the proposed model as a starting point to simulate complex interactions between supply chain network partners and understand better how the performance of their networks emerges from these interactions and from the adoption of different levels of business interoperability.

Abstract:
Purpose – The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of the prior relationship length and employments of supplier specific investments on buyers' control, and compare this effect across international and domestic business-to-business relationships. Design/methodology/approach – The sampling frame consisted of members of a National Association Purchasing and Logistics, and the respondents were asked to select one major supplier that would serve as a referent in answering the questions. In total, 156 purchasing firms responded to the questionnaire, and multiple regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses. Findings – Under condition with substantial supplier specific investments, buyers' control relaxes significantly as the length of the relationship increases in international supplier-buyer relationships, while such change in governance pattern is completely absent in domestic relationships. Research limitations/implications – This study is based on a cross-sectional design and does not fully capture the dynamics of business-to-business relationships. Future research should use different methodologies such as longitudinal studies to examine dynamic relationships among the constructs in the study. Practical implications – When strong inter-firm dependency is present, the level of buyer control in relationships with foreign suppliers is typically high in the early stage of the relationships in order to handle the problems of information asymmetry and prospective opportunistic behavior, and decline as the buyer's experiential knowledge with the foreign supplier increases with successive lower performance ambiguity. This governance pattern is less evident in domestic business-to-business relationships due to the potential effect of stronger reputation effects and stronger familiarity with current standards of trade. Originality/value – The paper contributes to the understanding that the changes in governance form over time will be highly contingent on the level of information asymmetry and inter-firm dependency in the early stage of the exchange relationship.

Abstract:
Purpose Advances in technology enable companies to collect and analyse data, which were previously not accessible, to either enhance existing business processes or create new ones. The purpose of this paper is to document the role and impact of Big Data Analytics (BDA), and the Internet of Things (IoT), in supporting a large logistics firm’s strategy to improve driver safety, lower operating costs, and reduce the environmental impact of their vehicles. Design/methodology/approach A single case with embedded units intrinsic case study method was adopted for this research and data were collected from a “real-life” situation, to create new knowledge about this emerging phenomenon. Findings Truck telematics were utilised in order to better understand, and improve, driving behaviours. Remote control centres monitor live sensor data from the company’s fleet of vehicles, capturing the likes of speed, location, braking, and engine data, to inform future training programs. A combination of truck telematics and geo-information are being used to enable proactive alerts to be sent to drivers regarding possible upcoming hazards. Camera-based technologies have been adopted to improve driver safety, and fatigue management, capturing evidence of important driving events and storing data directly to the cloud, and BDA is also being used to improve truck routing, recommend optimal fuel purchasing times/locations, and to forecast predictive and proactive maintenance schedules. Research limitations/implications The type of data collected by Company A, and similar logistics companies, has the potential to greatly inform researchers investigating autonomous vehicles, smart cities, and the physical internet. Practical implications Eco-driving, a practice informed/improved by BDA at Company A, has been linked to reductions in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, which bring both economic and environmental benefits. Technologies similar to Truckcam are growing in popularity in some parts of the world, to the point where it is now common practice to use dashcam assess of accidents to establish liability. This has implications for logistics firms, in other parts of the world, where such practices might not yet be so commonplace, and for drivers and society more broadly. Social implications Improvements in utilisation and routing have the potential to reduce traffic congestion, which is responsible for losses in productivity, increases in fuel consumption, air pollution and noise, and can incite stress, aggression, anger and unsafe behaviours in drivers. Predictive analytics, which generate refuelling and maintenance schedules, have the potential to be adopted by all vehicle manufacturers, and could generate reductions in customer fuel costs, whilst improving the performance, efficiency, and life expectancy of future motor all vehicles. The high probability of occupations in the logistics industry being replaced by computer automation in the near future is also discussed. Originality/value The findings from this research serve as a valuable case example of a real-world deployment of BDA and IoT technologies in the logistics industry, and present implications for practitioners, researchers, and society more widely.

Abstract:
Subject area This case study considers the supply chain redesign of a multinational company, with specific emphasis on production lot sizing, inventory policy and transportation decisions. Study level/applicability The material is intended for senior level students of business administration, logistics and similar departments. An intermediate knowledge of supply chain, purchasing and inventory concepts is required; therefore, the case is better suited for students who have taken one-semester courses on supply chain management and inventory management. This case can be used in graduate courses as part of discussions on physical distribution, supply chain design/redesign, risk pooling through process optimization. Case overview Within the global market, establishing the right business model where cost of operations is optimized has become key for competitiveness. This necessitates the simultaneous consideration and reevaluation of production, inventory and transportation interactivities within the integrated supply chain. We first discuss the business procurement model of a multinational company with emphasis on critical aspects of the current structure. An alternative model brought into consideration by the managers of the company considers consolidation of shipments through supply hubs and distribution to regional manufacturers. We present an analysis based on perspectives of company managers for and against this new business model. We finally provide numeric evidence on relevant costs of both models in order to enhance further discussion on redesign decisions. Expected learning outcomes The discussion regarding the case will provide a better understanding of key concepts of supply chain integration and coordination as well as the significance of the optimization of underlying processes. Abstract:
Running the business smoothly for protecting the environment is a significant challenge, on which industries are trying something to do at their level best. Reverse logistics play an important role in system design by reducing environmental consequences and increasing economic and social impacts. Given the recent fluctuations of the market, the production cost and ordering cost are considered triangular fuzzy numbers in this study. Customers’ demand is met at the right time, and there is no shortage of items; thus, attention can be paid to two warehouses of a retailer. The setup costs Purchasing costs and deterioration costs of this system are affected by the learning effects, which lead to a decrease in the total cost. Inflation is a significant problem in the market because manufacturing, remanufacturing, and retailers are all affected. This study proposes a reverse logistics system model so that customers can resolve their complaints about defective items and carbon emissions under two warehouses. Numerical results show that the fuzzy model is more economically beneficial than the crisp model, finds that the crisp and fuzzy model saw a difference of 0.34% in total cost. Two numerical examples illustrate this study, and a sensitivity analysis is performed using tables and graph.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this research is to investigate the implementation of green supply chain management (GSCM) practices and its impact on corporate performance (CP). The research in particular examines the results of implementing a set of GSCM practices on different dimensions of the CP. Design/methodology/approach This study, being the first of its kind in the Middle East, developed a research model to test the relationship between four main GSCM practices namely, eco-design, green purchasing, environmental cooperation and reverse logistics, and four dimensions of CP: operational performance, environmental performance, economic performance and social performance, while controlling three main variables (firm size, firm age and environment management system certification). Statistical analyses were based on the data collected, through survey questionnaires, from 117 firms in the manufacturing industry in the UAE. Reliability and validity of the research model were tested by the commonly accepted statistical tools. To test the hypotheses relating implementation of GSCM practice and CP, multiple regression analysis was used. Findings The finding of the study was that GSCM practices impact the CP dimensions differently. While none of the four GSCM practices were found to have any impact on the environmental performance, green purchasing and environmental cooperation were found to have a significant impact on the operational performance. The study found that only green purchasing plays a role in improving the economic performance, while only reverse logistics practices were found to impact the social performance of the firm positively. Research limitations/implications Research on GSCM is still in the nascent stage. Further refinement of the survey to differentiate between different manufacturing industries might be needed. Generalizability of the findings is also limited because of data collected from manufacturing firms in the UAE. This research provides important insights. The findings of this research are generally consistent with those of prior studies in other parts of the world. Firms in manufacturing industry in the UAE believe that GSCM practices help the company design and develop better products which, in turn, increase the company chances in selling its products in the international markets while, at same time, improving the average profit and market share. It was also found that the UAE firms believe that implementation of GSCM practices help improve the corporate image, enhance employees’ job satisfaction and improve employees’ health and safety. Practical implications Implementation of GSCM practices improves CP in different ways. Supply chain managers are required to decide on the CP dimension they want to improve and accordingly select the appropriate GSCM practices mix that leads to the desired level of improvement. Originality/value Although few earlier researches studied the impact of GSCM on CP, this study is different and makes a unique contribution by offering a holistic view of the impact of implementing four main GSCM practices on all dimensions of CP. The study offers some insights on the type of GSCM practices the firm needs to adopt to improve the targeted performance dimension.

Abstract:
This paper seeks to develop and test a model to examine the relationships between, technical aspects of IS resources (IS alignment, IS resources technical quality, IS advancement), supply chain process integration, and firm performance. A questionnaire-based survey was conducted to collect data from 227 supply chain, logistics, or procurement/purchasing managers of leading manufacturing and retail organizations. Drawing on resources-based view of the firm, and through extending the concept of process integration in supply network, as well as broadening the scope of role of IS resources in relation to process integration and performance gain from the focal firm to the entire supply chain, we found that supply chain process integration is an important multidimensional intermediate organizational capability through which the value of IS resources for supply chain management can be materialized. This capability serves as a catalyst in transforming the value of technical aspects of IS resources into higher performance gain for a firm. Thus, the importance of formation of all dimensions of this capability across supply network should be realized. Moreover, the result suggests that the technical aspects of IS resources need to be jointly developed by supply partners to effectively form supply chain capabilities.

Abstract:
Abstract- Due to the environmental regulations and economic viability, many industries show growing interest in the product recovery. Product recovery strategies (sometimes called end-of-life (EoL)) are recycling, remanufacturing, reuse, and refurbishment of components. Remanufacturing is a process that brings end-of-life product to its “like-new” conditions, the process recover product functions and quality, the remanufactured product is as its equivalent new with same warranty and less purchasing price. The price difference is associated with saving in energy, material and other resources recovered from the EoL product. The air-conditioning is the most energy consuming sector in Saudi Arabia (the geographical location of the study) where it consume 60-70% of the total residential energy. This study provide initial investigation and assessment of Business models for remanufacturing of window air-conditioner., a survey regarding the customer behavior has been conducted, it assesses how users deal with EoL Air-Conditioner, it also measures their perceptions about the remanufacturing process. Moreover, the paper describes the importance of remanufacturing in the context of reverse logistics. Results show that the cost structure is the driving force of conducting the remanufacturing of the air-conditioner. Keywords: Remanufacturing; business model of remanufacturing; air conditioner.

Abstract:
In February 2020, the Indonesian Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs noted that in the last four years, 81,686 cooperatives were dissolved, leaving 123,048 active cooperatives. This case is a huge challenge for the government to overcome. Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) stated that the number of internet users in Indonesia reached 196.7 million in the middle of 2020. Meanwhile, data from Google & Temasek showed purchasing products via e-Commerce in Indonesia reached US$ 10.9 billion in 2017 and continuously increased in 2020. Most cooperatives in Indonesia run business conventionally with manual transactions, limited time, traditional logistics, and conventional membership administration. Nowadays, the institution with tens of thousands of members no longer effectively runs cooperative conventionally in a disruptive era. A conventional cooperative at a private university in Jakarta was observed in the study. There are tens of thousands of students and staff at the university. Three research questions arise, such as what can not be adequately solved in a traditional cooperative, what tools are used in digital cooperatives, and what shape can be used in the digital cooperative system model to solve issues. This study proposes a framework model in developing a digital cooperative to accommodate a huge amount of membership and enhance business scope. The research identified technology needed to overcome matters cannot be dealt with in a conventional cooperative. It provided a digital cooperative frameworks model that impacts value creation, value capture, and value delivery, especially in higher education.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the scope of sourcing research in Sub-Sahara African (SSA) from scholarly journals published from 1980 to 2013 on sourcing-related issues. The study identifies what is known about sourcing from this region and the implications for managers and researchers in supply chain management. Design/methodology/approach – Totally, 40 scholarly journals (supply chain journals and other journals publishing on diverse business topics) were found relevant and reviewed. Content (all field) search using the names of each SSA countries (e.g. Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, etc.) was carried out in the supply chain journals to filter out articles discussing sourcing-related topics. For other business journals, keyword search was performed (procurement, sourcing, purchasing, outsourcing, supplier relations, supplier selection, supplier development, supply management, offshore, supply chain and logistics). Findings – The literature review suggests that studies discussing sourcing issues in SSA have focussed mainly on challenges of sourcing from SSA, and they provide some insights on implementation of supply chain tools such as total quality management, negotiating and selecting suppliers from SSA, and just-in time purchasing. However, the authors found that there is an under-representation of this region in supply chain management literature. More so, the articles discussing sourcing issues in Africa are limited in scope empirically and theoretically in comparison with the large amount of contributions in other emerging economies of Asia and developed economies. Research limitations/implications – The limited amount of publications and contributions does not allow us to provide an integrated framework for sourcing from SSA. Practical implications – There is a need for future research to explore how the SSA context could enhance theorizing in supply chains. Also, there is need for researchers to extend the sourcing debate from the over emphasis on technology sourcing, knowledge intensive service outsourcing and component sourcing to other lower value-added products such as agricultural products and other raw materials sourced in SSA. Originality/value – This paper is one of the first to explore the scope of sourcing in Africa. As the findings suggest, there have been limited amount of papers published about this region. The review provides a perspective for researchers to explore this region and to aid theory development in supply chains. It also provided implications on how to support research publication focussing on this region and how to inform managerial perceptions on sourcing from SSA.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the supply chain management (SCM) skills that support the sensing and seizing of opportunities in a changing business environment. Design/methodology/approach Based on the previous literature on the T-shaped model of SCM skills, data were collected through a mail survey among Australian business executives. The resultant skill sets are grouped along factors that support the sensing vs seizing of opportunities. Findings Interestingly from an SCM perspective, functional logistics-related skills are important to maintain competitiveness but are not the ones contributing to a firm’s ability to sense opportunities and threats, and to seize opportunities in a changing business environment. The authors, therefore, support the notion that supply chain managers should be managers first. Factual SCM knowledge is the solid basis, but otherwise only an entry requirement in this field. Research limitations/implications Problem-solving skills, along with forecasting and customer/supplier relationship management, stand out as important components that support the ability of supply chain managers to sense and shape opportunities and threats in a turbulent business environment. This focus would tend to suggest the importance of supply chain integration and collaboration as management approaches. Other SCM skills from warehousing and inventory management to transportation and purchasing are more prevalent for maintaining competitiveness. Practical implications The results of the survey and the consequential analysis indicate that the content of tertiary-level educational programmes should be significantly reviewed to deliver two distinct (but partially overlapping) streams that focus on the generalist and functionalist managers who must work together in the management of the increasingly global and complex supply chains. Social implications Functional skills often form the basis of training and education programmes for supply chain managers. Whilst these form the solid foundation for their jobs, they are entry requirements at best. In a changing business environment, other skills are needed for success. Given that turbulence is becoming the norm rather than the exception, this finding necessitates rethinking in training and education programmes, as well as in the recruitment of supply chain managers. Originality/value Testing the T-shaped model of SCM skills from a dynamic capabilities perspective, the results of the factor analysis lead to a regrouping of skill sets in terms of sensing and seizing opportunities in a turbulent business environment.

Abstract:
Purpose Based on the empirical findings from a survey of Korean firms with greater environmental risks, this paper aims to identify variables that either promote or inhibit the successful implementation of green sourcing strategy and to evaluate the effects of green sourcing on the firm’s supplier selection, waste management, packaging and regulatory compliance. Design/methodology/approach To help multinational firms configure an environmentally conscious (green) sourcing strategy, this paper conducted a mail-questionnaire survey and then analyzed the survey results obtained from more than 300 valid responses by using a series of multinomial logistics regression, ordinal regression and discriminant analyses. In addition, the authors performed a cluster analysis, chi-square tests of independence and cross tabulation to analyze the data. Findings The authors found that the main driver for the firm’s green sourcing practices is its customer needs and preferences for the environment-friendly product and services instead of peer pressure or government mandates (including environmental regulation). Surprisingly, the authors also found that the firm with a greater purchasing power did not necessarily factor the supplier’s advances in environmental programs into its supplier selection, although the firm’s amount of purchase volume can give it a bargaining strength to pressure its supplier to adopt the environmental programs. Originality/value A rapid industrialization of Asia-Pacific countries for the past several decades brought unprecedented economic prosperity in those countries. However, it also eroded ecosystem quality gradually through air, water and ground contamination and pollution caused by industrial activities. Such concerns have prompted many firms in the Asia-Pacific region to reassess their up-stream supply chain strategy such as sourcing strategy. This paper is one of the first to examine how Asia-Pacific firms develop such strategy and identify the most common green sourcing practices that can be guidance for other firms embracing environmental programs.

Abstract:
ERP technology has been embraced as an enterprise-wide package to integrate all necessary business functions into a single system with a shared database. It enhances decision making in business process and systemically harmonizes the activities of sales and marketing, manufacturing processes, operational management, product and service logistics, product purchasing, financial management, product development, and management of human resources. The study examined organizational attributes influencing implementation of enterprise resource planning in a medical research institute in Kenya. The study sought to explore the influence of top management support, implementation team, user support and resource availability on ERP implementation at KEMRI-Wellcome Trust research programme. The study used descriptive survey as research design. The target population was employees of KEMRI Wellcome Trust and Technobrain Kenya, the consulting firm. Data collection methods used were questionnaires. A preliminary study was carried out to test the rationality and reliability of the questionnaire. Considering the study was be descriptive in nature, data was analysed using descriptive statistics like frequencies and tables. Linear regression model was also used to validate if the relationship between the independent variables and the dependent variable is statistically important. The regression indicated that ERP implementation (the dependent variable) was highly influenced by top managements support, implementation team, user support and resource availability (the independent variable). Conclusively, the findings suggested that user support, resource availability, and top management had a central role in implementing effective ERP plans. Abstract:
As a basic part of organizations’ logistics management, purchasing function has supplier selection as one of its main responsibilities. One of the main objectives a buyer follows in supplier selection is to determine optimal quota to be allocated to each supplier. How to allocate orders to different suppliers is as important task as it may affect efficiency of the whole chain. Also, due to variations in real-world business environment, order allocation process is always associated with uncertainties that make it complicated. Therefore, a three-stage integrated framework with environmental uncertainties considered is proposed to allocate orders; this framework can determine qualified suppliers to whom it assigns optimal quota. Considering multi-period purchases and uncertainties, this framework presents a multi-objective nonlinear programming model to determine optimal quota to be allocated to each qualified supplier within each specified period. In order to have the order allocation process closer to real-world cases while increasing the reliability of the obtained solutions, time value of money, inflation, transportation modes, supplier’s profit, and pricing strategy are considered in this model. According to uncertain structure of the proposed model, a solution strategy is proposed to convert this model into a single-objective deterministic model. Then, the resulted single-objective deterministic model is solved by proposing three evolutionary metaheuristic algorithms based on cuckoo optimization algorithm and imperialist competitive algorithm. Finally, a sample problem is presented together with some statistical tests and sensitivity analyses to assess and examine the proposed framework.

Abstract:
Purpose Turkish food retail in Germany fulfils social, cultural, and economic functions, but is threatened by shifts in demand and competition. The purpose of this paper is to give a holistic, interdisciplinary, and action-oriented view of the challenges and opportunities of Turkish food retail in Germany. Design/methodology/approach Based on a qualitative study using expert interviews with 18 businesspersons from different parts of the Turkish food supply chain in Germany and a qualitative survey of 349 working Bachelor students of trade, industrial, and logistics management as well as business informatics, this paper takes a value chain approach. Findings The main opportunities of Turkish food retail in Germany lie in increasing its efficiency, using purchasing associations and brand building, targeting well-funded German consumers, offering fluent Turkish-German customer service and shopping experiences, providing appealing shop locations, designs, and layouts, product range adjustments, and promotions. Research limitations/implications This paper is based on a small scale qualitative study as access to Turkish food retail experts is limited. The sample was carefully selected to be a fair representation of the Turkish food supply chain. As for the consumers, only students have been surveyed so far, because they were targeted by the experts interviewed. In order to allow wider generalizations, this sample could be extended. Originality/value This study complements and enhances the very limited research on Turkish food retail in Germany. For the first time, the call for a holistic, interdisciplinary, and action-oriented examination of the challenges and opportunities of Turkish food retail in Germany is answered from a value chain perspective.

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to think on the state-of-the-art of e-commerce and its trends for the future. E-commerce has been developing since the 1990’s and its evolution is directly linked to the advancement of information technology. Early e-commerce began with the simple dissemination of goods and services by digital means, going from the issuance of orders, then the delivery of products to achieving interaction between traders and consumers via the Internet. Some e-commerce tools enable users to perform transactions even without leaving home – with transactions ranging from purchasing to paying bills. This can be done 24 hours a day, including weekends and holidays. The demand for convenience and, even, privacy are the main responsible reasons for the increased use of electronic commerce by consumers. Despite the advances of e-commerce in recent times it still requires larger investment, especially regarding safety, which is appointed as major deficiency in this trade modality, along with logistics. Investments will also be necessary to enable e-commerce to keep up with the current technological advances and future development prospects, such as the adoption of virtual intelligence, the expansion of globalization with language translators, adaptive interfaces that take into account the specific characteristics of user groups and the mobile commerce, and the experimentation in 3D model. This study aims to – by means of literature review – draw a brief history of the emergence and evolution of e-commerce, also highlighting the tools in use, the trends and challenges of this modern business model.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to propose a halal cluster concept to better organise production and trade of halal food. Design/methodology/approach – This paper builds further on previous work published in the Journal of Islamic Marketing on halal food supply chains and value chains. A cluster analysis is conducted on the Malaysia and Dubai halal cluster to provide a better understanding of their halal cluster models and sustainability. Findings – Food production and trade has been described as the weak link in the halal value chain. To guarantee availability of and access to halal food, a new paradigm is required in better organising the production and trade of halal food through halal clusters. A halal cluster model is proposed based on five pillars, namely, Muslim consumer, education and research, halal integrity network, halal supply chain and enablers. Research limitations/implications – This conceptual paper proposes a halal cluster model to scale up the production of halal food for the world. However, more empirical research on halal purchasing, halal network development, halal trade and halal parks is needed to support the development of these halal clusters. Practical implications – To better address today’s issues in the halal industries (ingredients, certification, logistics, etc.), there are evident benefits of producing in strong halal clusters, hereby providing easy access to halal ingredients and access to attractive Muslim markets. Originality/value – As halal is going through an evolution, towards a halal supply chain and value chain, new business models are required. It is the first study investigating halal clusters.

Abstract:
Development of trading activities is carried out in accordance with the current Concept of development of internal trade of Ukraine. At a rapid pace, changes are occurring in consumer preferences, assortment conditions, and the expansion of the influence of the geographical and species capabilities of the presented goods. The analysis of internal changes in the volume of goods turnover of enterprises by product groups, business entities at the country level and its individual regions made it possible to argue and justify the importance of observing the totality of organization principles, the balance of supply and demand, purchasing power, economic feasibility and payback. The used methods of author generalizations, analytical and statistical calculations, comparisons made it possible to systematize the digital material of the study and substantiate conclusions regarding the state and dynamics of the development of trade activities in Ukraine, as well as the Khmelnitsky region, as one of its regions. The study focuses on network marketing, as one of the forms of development and improvement of trade and the determination of the necessary nomenclature and bottlenecks in the activities of trade entities, including markets. The prospects of the use of electronic commerce (purchase and sales) are substantiated, which significantly expands the possibilities for carrying out trading activities for both buyers and trade enterprises. It is proposed to take into account the influence of demographic security, as one of the factors that shape the country's product policy and its export potential. It is determined that the influence on the increase in turnover indicators has an extensive factor in the growth of prices for consumed goods, in a certain way introduces distortions in the perception of digital information. The use of innovative technologies, modern methods of managerial decision-making in the field of marketing, logistics allows us to improve the trading process, satisfy consumer demand and ensure the effectiveness of enterprises in the trading sphere.

Abstract:
Purpose – Enterprise resource planning (ERP) is intended to integrate all facets of a company’s business operations encompassing production planning, material purchasing, inventory control, logistics, accounting, finance, marketing, and human resource management by creating a single depository of the database that can be shared by the entire organization and its trading partners. Through an empirical study, the purpose of this paper is to identify a multitude of drivers that facilitate or hinder the implementation of ERP in business environments. Also, this paper determines its role in supply chain operations and assesses its impact on supply chain performances. Design/methodology/approach – To examine which factors drive the ERP adoption and gauge the level of the ERP success, the authors develop a research framework based on two well-known theories in the strategy literature: a contingency theory; and a resource-based view of the firm. This research framework allowed us to develop a series of hypotheses regarding the use of ERP for strategic sourcing. To test hypotheses, the authors carried out the study in three phases: a pre-pilot; a pilot; and a large-scale questionnaire survey. In the pre-pilot phase, the authors generated potential survey items through theory development and a literature review. In the pilot phase, the authors develop a structural equation model along with the identification of valid constructs based on structural interviews and the Q-sort method. At the last stage, the authors conducted a large-scale survey via mail questionnaires primarily targeting the Korean industry comprised of manufacturers and their suppliers and customers. Findings – The firm’s ERP adoption and implementation decision is mainly affected by its internal environment. Defying the conventional wisdom, the firm’s external environment has little influence on its decision to adopt and implement ERP. However, through the mediating role of an internal environment, an external environment still indirectly influences the ERP adoption and ERP implementation decision. Also, the authors found that ERP could enhance the ERP adopter’s organizational capability and supplier capability. Originality/value – This study is one of a few attempts to investigate the role of ERP in the supply chain and identify important determinants influencing the ERP adoption and implementation decisions. Especially, in contrast with the previous literature which often gauged the benefits of ERP from an ERP adopter’s standpoint, this paper is one of the few to assess the benefits of ERP from the ERP adopter’s supply chain partners standpoints. Also, it is one of the first to assess the impact of ERP on supplier capability, organizational capability, and customer value.
