Abstract:
This Correspondence article is a comment which directly relates to the paper “A study of problems encountered in Granger causality analysis from a neuroscience perspective” (Stokes and Purdon, 2017). We agree that interpretation issues of Granger causality (GC) in neuroscience exist, partially due to the historically unfortunate use of the name “causality”, as described in previous literature. On the other hand, we think that Stokes and Purdon use a formulation of GC which is outdated (albeit still used) and do not fully account for the potential of the different frequency-domain versions of GC; in doing so, their paper dismisses GC measures based on a suboptimal use of them. Furthermore, since data from simulated systems are used, the pitfalls that are found with the used formulation are intended to be general, and not limited to neuroscience. It would be a pity if this paper, even if written in good faith, became a wildcard against all possible applications of GC, regardless of the large body of work recently published which aims to address faults in methodology and interpretation. In order to provide a balanced view, we replicate the simulations of Stokes and Purdon, using an updated GC implementation and exploiting the combination of spectral and causal information, showing that in this way the pitfalls are mitigated or directly solved.

Abstract:
Something was menacing the South during the Progressive Era. Southern physicians located the threat in the “germ plasm,” the genes, of the region's inhabitants. Writing in a now-infamous 1893 “open letter” published in the Virginia Medical Monthly, Hunter Holmes McGuire, a Richmond physician and president of the American Medical Association, asked for “some scientific explanation of the sexual perversion in the negro of the present day.” McGuire's correspondent, Chicago physician G. Frank Lydston, replied that African-American men raped white women because of “[h]ereditary influences descending from the uncivilized ancestors of our negroes.” Lydston's solution to this problem was not lynching, but surgical castration which “prevents the criminal from perpetuating his kind.” Eight years later in Alabama, Dr. John E. Purdon opined, “It is a proved fact of experience that the inveterate criminal tends to propagates a race of criminals, and that the undeveloped or degraded nerve-tissue will duplicate itself in the next generation.” Dr. Purdon then declared, “Emasculation is the simplest and most perfect plan that can be adopted to secure the perfection of the race.” Twenty-three years later, in 1924, Harry Hamilton Laughlin testified in support of a Virginia law providing for the eugenic sterilization of the “shiftless, ignorant, and worthless class of anti-social whites of the South,” who allegedly created social problems for “normal” people. The multiplication of these “defective delinquents,” Laughlin and Virginia officials claimed, could only be controlled by restricting their procreation.

Abstract:
Unwanted, ego-alien distressing intrusive thoughts, images, or impulses (i.e., obsessions) are a hallmark of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Until recently the psychological processes involved in the origin, persistence, and treatment of these perplexing intrusive mental repetitions have not been well understood. Over the past decade, a new cognitive perspective on OCD has emerged that has provided new insights into the pathogenesis and treatment of obsessions. In this article we briefly consider recent findings on normal and abnormal obsessions, their relationship to mood disturbance, and the status of key cognitive processes implicated in the pathogenesis of obsessions as discussed in publications by Salkovskis, Rachman, Freeston, Clark, Purdon, and others. We conclude with a discussion of treatment implications and whether the inclusion of cognitive strategies that directly targets change in dysfunctional beliefs and appraisals will enhance standard behavioral treatment of OCD.

Rantala, N. (Niina). "Maaperän vaikutus puron rantavyöhykkeen mikrobeihin." Master's thesis, University of Oulu, 2019. http://jultika.oulu.fi/Record/nbnfioulu-201908062745.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Green building is a rapidly growing industry. The residential sector is responsible for 21.8 percent of the United States' energy consumption so an increased penetration of the green building industry could affect national energy consumption. Previous willingness to pay studies suggest that buyers are willing to pay a premium for green homes. The presence of a green certification is used as an indicator for sustainable attributes in homes built and sold in Colorado between 1999 and 2009. A hedonic price regression model predicts the sale price of the home as a function of home attributes and green certification status. The presence of green attributes fails to statistically affect the sale price indicating that, contrary to survey data, buyers may not have a willingness to pay for green construction attributes.

Based on the big critical legacy of Camilo Castelo Brancos work, built since Teófilo Braga until the present, this study aims looking at Camilians fiction beyond its obvious contents: thwarted, pure, and self-sacrificing love stories. In order to do so, we have analyzed the novels Os brilhantes do brasileiro (1869) and Agulha em Palheiro (1863), with the objective of showing how the author is able to combine, in these novels, the literary style in vogue at the time and the portrait of the prosaic society that the author observed in his reality immediately, a world which is far away from the romantic and idealized configuration proposed by significant part of this criticism. In addition to addressing the specific characteristics of each novel, such as narrative structure, the construction of characters, the themes addressed, among others, we intend, at the end of this study, to examine the similarities and differences between the two narratives, emphasizing the dynamism, the multiplicity and, most importantly, the complexity of the writer of São Miguel de Ceide.

Hui, Chi. "Moment redistribution in cold-formed steel purlin systems." Thesis, Imperial College London, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/25533.

Full text
Abstract:
The external envelope of steel framed industrial buildings normally involves the use of purlins and rails spanning between the main hot-rolled frames to support the roofing/cladding. These purlins are typically light-gauge cold-formed steel members of complex shape for which the thinness of the material means that local instabilities will significantly influence their structural behaviour. In this thesis, the finite element (FE) method (ABAQUS) has been used to develop numerical analyses to study the buckling behaviour and degree of moment redistribution in continuous and sleeved cold-formed steel 2-span purlin systems. Five types of nonlinear FE analyses have been validated against reported physical tests: (i) continuous 2-span beams subjected to uniformly distributed load (UDL), (ii) single span beams subjected to a moment gradient, (iii) single span beams subjected to pure bending (iv) sleeved 2-span beams subjected to a UDL and (v) single span sleeved sections subjected to a moment gradient. The FE analyses were used to generate a large portfolio of new results for gravity and uplift loading for continuous and sleeved 2-span arrangements covering a wide range of cross-sections by varying the flange and web dimensions and material thickness. The effects of local and distortional buckling and limited rotational capacities for single span FE models were investigated. The 2-span FE results formed the basis for a simple modification to conventional plastic design that recognises the possibility of a reduction in moment with increasing rotation in the interior support region. The assumption of full moment redistribution for gravity loading was found to be only valid for stocky sections but not for slender sections. For uplift loading in addition to the potential reductions in moment at the interior support, limitations in the span moment due to lateral torsional buckling (LTB) for slender members were also accounted for. Based on the FE results, an α-reduction framework was established to predict the collapse load for continuous and sleeved 2-span systems. It was assumed that the cross-section or LTB resistance was achieved in the span while a reduced cross-section resistance allowing for the post-peak fall in capacity was achieved at the interior support. The accuracy of the proposed design method was compared against elastic and full plastic design cases by considering their ultimate load carrying capacities. Whereas the elastic design method provides overly-conservative results and plastic design overestimates the capacity of slender sections, the proposed design method gave accurate predictions of the failure load with minimal scatter for all cases. The developed α-reduction framework provides a foundation for allowing the use of other purlin sections and interior support connections by inserting alternative cross-sectional moment capacity inputs obtained from several sources such as physical testing, hand calculations from design codes and FE analyses.

There is no clear relations between them apparently. However, when considering pure three-partite systems, have the conservation law which establishe a distribution of entanglement and discord through the subsystems. The sum of entanglements of a particular subsystem with the other ones is equal to the sum of discords betweell the same subsystems. Therefore, the bipartite entanglements can not be increased without increasing by the same amount the sum of discords. In this work, we derive relations between entanglement and discord for systems of 4, 5 and 6 parts. Notably, the relation between the entanglement and discord for even and odd number of systems are different. For even number of parts, relationships are inequalities, while for the odd number of parts, they are equalities, for which demonstrate its generalization. We also use the relation between thermodynamic work and discord to relate the sum of entanglements of formation with the difference in the performance of between quantum and classical Maxwell's Demon.

Cortese, Scott D. "Investigation of Single Span Z-Section Purlins Supporting Standing Seam Roof Systems Considering Distortional Buckling." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/34198.

Full text
Abstract:
Presently, the industry accepted method for the determination of the governing buckling strength for cold-formed purlins supporting a standing seam metal roof system is the 1996 AISI Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members, which contains provisions for local and lateral buckling. Previous research has determined that the AISI provisions for local buckling strength predictions of cold-formed purlins are highly unconservative and that the AISI provisions for lateral buckling strength predictions of cold-formed purlins are overly conservative. Therefore, a more accurate "hand" method is needed to predict the buckling strengths of cold-formed purlins supporting standing seam roof systems. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the accuracy of the Hancock Method, which predicts distortional buckling strengths, as compared to the 1996 AISI Specification provisions for local and lateral buckling. This study used the experimental results of 62 third point laterally braced tests and 12 laterally unbraced tests. All tests were simple span, cold-formed Z-section supported standing seam roof systems. The local, lateral, and distortional buckling strengths were predicted for each test using the aforementioned methods. These results were compared to the experimentally obtained data and then to each other to determine the most accurate strength prediction method. Based on the results of this study, the Hancock Method for the prediction of distortional buckling strength was the most accurate method for third point braced purlins supporting standing seam roof systems. In addition, a resistance factor was developed to account for the variation between the experimental and the Hancock Method's predicted strengths.<br>Master of Science
