English Puritans have only a small reputation for aesthetic contributions to architecture. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, they worshiped God without making a show of buildings or beautiful ceremonies; consequently, there are few grand Puritan architectural monuments. Nonseparating Puritans, blending into the larger church, put their emphasis on the pure preaching and practice of biblical religion, not on outward appearances. And the Separatists, the strictest of the Puritans, gathered in disguised house-churches. Because of this artistic silence it is easy to downplay the importan

Drawing on recent research on migration to New England, the thesis argues that Eliot, like many other migrants, went to New England primarily in search of a safe haven to practise pure reformed Christianity, not to convert Indians. Abstract:
This chapter explores the religious culture of Puritanism. Beginning with the amorphous, pluralistic character of early English dissenters, the chapter discusses the problem of establishing orthodoxy in Massachusetts, particularly the issues central to the Hutchinsonian crisis: sanctification as evidence of election, the conversion experience as evidence, and preparationism. From here the chapter considers the gendering of Puritan religiosity through the privileging of formal education and the rationalist preparation for grace and examines the construction of female spirituality as grounded in biology. The perceptions of woman as weak and woman as evil are developed in great detail. The chapter then places Puritan theologians’ understanding of women within a reconsideration of Puritans’ construction of sin, salvation, and election. It returns to conversion as a mystical experience available to all regardless of rank or gender, thus fostering a radical egalitarianism.

Abstract:
This introductory chapter provides an overview of Puritanism. To its parent, the Puritan movement owed the ambition to become the state-endorsed version of Christianity in England and Scotland. Theological principle lay at the heart of this ambition. On both sides of the Protestant–Catholic divide, theologians and civic leaders agreed that true religion could be readily defined. All others were false—entirely false or perhaps only in part. Either way, defending true religion against its enemies was crucial. Were error to overtake truth, vast numbers of people would never receive or understand the gospel promise of unmerited grace. Almost as crucial was a second principle, that God empowered godly kings or, as was also said, the “Christian prince,” to use the powers of the civil state in behalf of true religion. In early modern Britain and subsequently in early New England, Puritans took both of these assumptions for granted. A third principle concerned the nature of the church. Its role on earth was as a means of grace for all of humankind, a role complicated by the doctrine that only the faithful few would eventually be included within the gospel promise of salvation. Because the Puritan movement took a strong stand on the Bible as “law” and insisted that the state churches in England and Scotland eliminate all aspects of Catholicism, it became intensely controversial.

Abstract:
The Armada campaign and the prospect of a Spanish invasion allowed for a purge of Catholic separatists, principally in London, in summer 1588. Some of those who were executed at this point were prepared to make (partially) loyalist statements, but these were not enough to satisfy the queen’s government, which seems to have used their deaths as didactic propaganda demonstrations, partly in order to whip up popular feeling against the external threat. However, the failure of the Armada allowed known anti-puritans in the regime to vent their anti-puritanism, even while some Catholics, faced with the promotion in the line of succession of a Calvinist (James VI of Scotland) now became critics of legitimist blood-right succession. Several Catholics who were sentenced under the 1585 treason statute appear to have made statements which implied full-blown resistance. That mode of non-compliance was compatible with the line insisted on by prominent clergy such as Henry Garnet that all forms of submission and conformity, in the face of oppression, were morally unacceptable. Garnet and others unequivocally denounced the cleric Thomas Bell, who argued in favour of occasional conformity, and who may well have articulated the view of many Catholics who thought that out-and-out resistance was a moral luxury that they could not afford. The puritan-led assault against Catholic separatism was clearly informed by a sense that the identification of popery with sedition tout court provided a riposte to conformist critiques of puritanism, and it intersected with, for example, the royal proclamation of October 1591.
