Abstract:
Abstract. Longitudinal developmental research is often focused on patterns of change or growth across different (sub)groups of individuals. Particular to some research contexts, developmental inquiries may involve one or more (sub)groups that are small in nature and therefore difficult to properly capture through statistical analysis. The current study explores the lower-bound limits of subsample sizes in a multiple group latent growth modeling by means of a simulation study. We particularly focus on how the maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian estimation approaches differ when (sub)sample sizes are small. The results show that Bayesian estimation resolves computational issues that occur with ML estimation and that the addition of prior information can be the key to detect a difference between groups when sample and effect sizes are expected to be limited. The acquisition of prior information with respect to the smaller group is especially influential in this context.

This article reviews computer-aided engineering software that is used to boost productivity ranges from computer-aided design (CAD) systems to product data management and visualization systems. MacDon Industries used a Solid Edge product to merge CAD and product data management (PDM) systems to give engineers easy access to already created designs. MacDon tracks its tens of thousands of part designs by use of Solid Edge so engineers do not have to spend considerable time searching for the designs. Bayside Automation of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, which makes automated assembly systems on which fuse boxes, valves, and the like are made, has discovered another area where technology—in this case, simulation software—can cut costs and increase productivity. CAD and PDM software from Alibre of Richardson, Texas, help the supplier and manufacturer pass translated design information back and forth quickly.

Abstract:
AbstractArchaeological documentation is in the midst of a technological shift as recording systems transition from paper-based forms to digital formats. Digital systems effectively replicate the information recorded on paper forms, while also offering recording advantages for archaeologists in the field. In addition to such logistical contributions to archaeological workflows, digital technology also has tremendous potential to transform the ways that archaeology is done by shifting how we see our sites, and how we document them through diverse data types. With the goal of exploring this potential, we developed a tablet-based relational database, using FileMaker, which provides the ability to simultaneously record specific characteristics of artifacts and features according to two cultural perspectives—modern archaeological understandings and also those of the Classic Maya. In this article, we describe the database and discuss the results of a pilot field season using the database to record excavations at the site of Say Kah, Belize. Our experiences yield several broader reflections on the impact of using digital recording systems both for practical advantage and for productive shifts in perception.

Abstract:
Recent years have seen a sharp increase in the ubiquity and power of connected devices, such as smartphones, smart appliances and smart sensors. These de- vices produce large amounts of data that can be extremely precious for training larger, more advanced machine learning models. Unfortunately, it is some- times not possible to collect and process these datasets on a central system, due either to their size or to the growing privacy requirements of digital data handling. To overcome this limit, researchers developed protocols to train global models in a decentralised fashion, exploiting the computational power of these edge devices. These protocols do not require any of the data on the device to be shared, relying instead on communicating partially-trained models.Unfortunately, real-world systems are notoriously hard to control, and may present a wide range of challenges that are easily overlooked in academic stud- ies and simulations. This research analyses the gossip learning protocol, one of the main results in the area of decentralised machine learning, to assess its applicability to real-world scenarios.Specifically, this work identifies the main assumptions built into the pro- tocol, and performs carefully-crafted simulations in order to test its behaviour when these assumptions are lifted. The results show that the protocol can al- ready be applied to certain environments, but that it fails when exposed to certain conditions that appear in some real-world scenarios. In particular, the models trained by the protocol may be biased towards the data stored in nodes with faster communication speeds or a higher number of neighbours. Further- more, certain communication topologies can have a strong negative impact on the convergence speed of the models. While this study also suggests effective mitigations for some of these is- sues, it appears that the gossip learning protocol requires further research ef- forts, in order to ensure a wider industrial applicability.

Abstract:
The state-of-the-art object detection and image classification methods can perform impressively on more than 9k classes. In contrast, the number of classes in semantic segmentation datasets are fairly limited. This is not surprising , when the restrictions caused by the lack of labeled data and high computation demand are considered. To efficiently perform pixel-wise classification for c number of classes, segmentation models use cross-entropy loss on c-channel output for each pixel. The computational demand for such prediction turns out to be a major bottleneck for higher number of classes. The major goal of this thesis is to reduce the number of channels of the output prediction, thus allowing to perform semantic segmentation with very high number of classes. The reduction of dimension has been approached using metric learning for the semantic feature space. The metric learning provides us the mapping from pixel to embedding with minimal, still sufficient, number of dimensions. Our proposed approximation of groundtruth class probability for cross entropy loss helps the model to place the embeddings of same class pixels closer, reducing inter-class variabilty of clusters and increasing intra-class variability. The model also learns a prototype embedding for each class. In loss function, these class embeddings behave as positive and negative samples for pixel embeddings (anchor). We show that given a limited computational memory and resources, our approach can be used for training a segmentation model for any number of classes. We perform all experiments on one GPU and show that our approach performs similar and in some cases slightly better than deeplabv3+ baseline model for Cityscapes and ADE20K dataset. We also perform experiments to understand trade-offs in terms of memory usage, inference time and performance metrics. Our work helps in alleviating the problem of computational complexity, thus paving the way for image segmentation task with very high number of semantic classes.

Abstract:
With the rapid advances of technology, digitisation of many facets of our existence is taking place in an attempt to improve everyday life. The automotive industry is following suit, attempting to introduce connected traffic technology that is meant to improve traffic fluidity and safety. To facilitate this, connected vehicles aim to create solutions for the sharing of information between other vehicles, infrastructure - such as traffic light controllers, and pedestrians. In an attempt to further investigate the connected vehicle landscape of today, the thesis compared the two most prominent technologies, DSRC and cellular communication. An essential part of this comparison was highlighting the potential attacks that the two technologies could be exposed to. This was done in order to open up a discussion on what technology is the most suitable to focus on for the future both in terms of viability and security. DSRC has been considered the prominent communication technology for connected vehicles, but the development has stagnated. As such, the ever-evolving cellular technology is looking like the superior technology. This, however, is reliant on 5G delivering the speeds, stability and security promised. The state of constant vehicular connection is going to lead to many issues and concerns, both for the privacy of the individual but also the safety of the public. While connected traffic aims to solve a number of issues from traffic accidents to emissions - if the security of the communication is not constantly evolving to meet the rapid development of new technology, the consequences of connecting such a delicate system might nullify the potential benefits.

During the evolution and innovation of information waves, recent institutes are looking forward to combine the information technology with teaching and administration in campus. However, the information retrieve in school context does not have a strong communication for information. If we can develop a series of information pushing system which is combined with all campus, parents may be allowed to obtain the security information of their kids in schools by using a synchronized mode or an unsynchronized mode PDA and smart phones. This may strongly help the parents to know and to handle their kids' information in campus life. Based on this vision, the researcher planned to develop a "Mobile Context Monitoring and Its Real-time Information Pushing System" and set up IP cameras all over the places where frequently used (such as sports court, classes, and laboratories) or rarely used (such as important equipment rooms, file rooms or basements). This research is trying to analyze the key technologies of mobile monitoring, and design a structure of real-time information pushing platform in order to handle the subscribe services and push services through the kernel service module. In this research, we also provide a manage system to setup the image resources and alarm records, providing parents a mobilized monitoring system to use. The developed systems are implemented by a distributed system in order to improve the traditional monitoring pattern and also implement a ubiquitous safety monitoring pushing system. This research actually enhanced the ability and flexibility of actual context monitoring.

Abstract:
In the era of mobile data, there have been many changes regarding human behavior on data consumption. Having abundant or “unlimited” data is becoming more and more common. However, what would happen to the behaviors of people if they were under extreme conditions of data limitations. This study shows the behavioral outcome of the participants of this survey when exposed to limitations regarding data consumption. Some of the most chosen applications in terms of importance when travelling abroad and when staying home were mobility applications, communication, social media, and restaurant search downloads. There exist many different types of research on mobile data but very few highlight the importance of behavioral change and data prioritization. Under the umbrella of mobile data, many different businesses are being disrupted due to the mass interconnectivity of people and differentiated networks. Using real-life data, this study shows us that people do prioritize their applications when exposed to certain data limitations in different scenarios. The outcomes of the survey show us businesses could be affected by mobile data and the pulling of information that participants have. The exposure to limited data further increased this disruption as people only require applications that were necessary and most of these were related to some specific industries such as tourism and gastronomy. This study shows us that people in general, prefer to download information with an average mean of 70.2 megabytes rather than upload information with an average mean of 29.8 with a certain pattern in application prioritization.

Abstract:
Direct electron density determination from SAXS data opens up new opportunities. The ability to model density at high resolution and the implicit direct estimation of solvent terms such as the hydration shell may enable high-resolution wide angle scattering data to be used to calculate density when combined with additional structural information. Other diffraction methods that do not measure three-dimensional intensities, such as fiber diffraction, may also be able to take advantage of iterative structure factor retrieval. While the ability to reconstruct electron density ab initio is a major breakthrough in the field of solution scattering, the potential of the technique has yet to be fully uncovered. Additional structural information from techniques such as crystallography, NMR, and electron microscopy and density modification procedures can now be integrated to perform advanced modeling of the electron density function at high resolution, pushing the boundaries of solution scattering further than ever before.

Scholarly examination of the media coverage of the Supreme Court occurs for both intrinsic and instrumental purposes. Scholarly study of media coverage of the Court examines the content, frame, and magnitude of the coverage. Pushing further, these examinations provide critical information about the relationship between media coverage and the institutional credibility of the Court. Studies of media coverage are also instrumental as they provide metrics useful in the explication of judicial behavior. Despite the usefulness of the work explored here, the knowledge gained may be expiring. As social networks usurp traditional and online media sources as the conduit for information, our focus on the relationship of the mass media, its coverage of the Court, and various questions of judicial legitimacy or public knowledge may be expiring.

Abstract:
This chapter analyzes the impact of online news on news reporting. In the first decade of the 2000s, the “what” in accident, crime, employment, and political stories first began reporting more events in stories, reversing decades of declines. But by 2010, the references to current events within stories had declined to the levels of the 1990s, with political stories concentrating even more than other topics on a single current event. The changes in the “what” echo earlier patterns of modern news, when practitioners responded to then-new technologies by reverting to established ways. Online, the news outlets again moved together, a pattern that suggests a missed opportunity. News practice might have escaped from conventional constraints, pushing to a linked perspective on what happens. The general public was using interconnectivity to cope with the flow of information in the new century, a third of them sharing news stories on social media, half relying on word of mouth, and more than three-quarters using email links. Instead of finding ways to stay in tune with public habits, news practitioners pushed back, closing ranks around modern truth.

However, the Web infrastructure as it is not adequate, and Stream Processing technologies cannot deal with heterogeneous data streams and events. To solve these issues, we need to investigate how to identify, represent, and process streams and events on the Web. In this chapter, we discuss the recent advancements for taming Velocity on the Web of Data without neglecting Data Variety. Thus, we present a Design Science research investigation that builds on the state of the art of Stream Reasoning and RDF Stream Processing. We present our research results, for representing and processing stream and events on the Web, and we discuss their potential impact.

Abstract:
AbstractThe ongoing environmental crisis is pushing the electrical sector towards a radical transformation, as the wide diffusion of renewable sources requires the power system to be more distributed, cooperative, and flexible, being each portion of the grid now able to produce and absorb power. This poses much more coordination challenges with respect to the traditional centralized system, largely sustained by fully controllable fossil-based power plants. In this context, microgrids, i.e. intelligent small-scale grids equipped with distributed energy resources and smart loads, are considered as the fundamental bricks of this future paradigm. This is due to the opportunity of coordinating co-located sources and loads, and to the microgrids extreme flexibility, as they can be operated either connected to the main grid or in islanded mode. The contribution of this doctoral research consists in the design of dedicated control architectures for ensuring the efficient and secure operation of microgrids in these two modes, characterized by different challenges and opportunities.
