Rush, Anna. "The generic originality of Iurii Tynianov's representation of Pushkin in the novels 'Pushkin' and 'The Gannibals." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/1712.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is the first extensive study devoted to the generic originality of Iurii Tynianov’s representation of Pushkin in his two historical novels, Pushkin (1935-1943) and the abandoned The Gannibals (1932). Chapter 1 contextualises Tynianov’s contribution to the current debates on the novel’s demise, ‘large’ form and the worthy protagonist. The conditions giving rise to contemporary interest in the genres of biography and the historical novel are delineated and the critical issues surrounding these are examined; Tynianov’s concern to secularise the rigid monolith of an all but sanctified ‘state-sponsored Pushkin’ and the difficulties of the task are also reviewed. Chapter 2 shifts the examination of Pushkin as a historical novel to its study within the generic framework of the Bildungs, Erziehungs and Künstlerromane with their particular problematics which allowed Tynianov to grapple with a cluster of moral, philosophical and educational issues, and to explore the formative influences on the protagonist’s identity as a poet. Chapter 3 explores the concept of history underlying Tynianov’s interpretation of the characters and events and the historiographical practices he employed in his analyses of the factors that shaped Pushkin’s own historical thinking. Chapter 4 investigates Tynianov’s scepticism about Abram Gannibal’s and A. Pushkin’s mythopoeia which reveals itself in Tynianov’s subversively ironical and playful use of myth in both novels. The Conclusion assesses Tynianov’s contribution to the 20th century fictional Pushkiniana and reflects on his innovative transgeneric historical novel which broke the normative restrictions of the genre, elevated it to the level of ‘serious’ literature and made it conducive to stylistic experimentation.

Galbraith, Helen. "Pushkin and Pushkin celebrations in Russian and Soviet song : assessing the development of a musical tradition." Thesis, University of Bristol, 2013. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.566701.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the factors affecting the production of Russian and Soviet song inspired by the lyrics of Pushkin. In so doing, it emphasises three influences which have been alluded to in previous scholarship, but little explored: the songs of Pushkin's time, major Pushkin anniversary celebrations, and the 'public image' of Pushkin, cultivated primarily through the celebrations. These celebrations, and their cultural-political context, are used as a primary touchstone in a quantitative survey of song production. Part One covers the Imperial era, which established the principles on which the development of Pushkin song would be predicated: the song forms of the romance, the folk-inspired russkaia pesnia and the choral cantata; and the inauguration of state-organised mass Pushkin celebrations. Part Two considers the Stalinist era and the attempted cultivation of the 'Soviet romance', based on texts reflecting the Soviet image of Pushkin as a freedom-loving revolutionary and 'people's poet'. It explores the demands on Push kin song exacted by the campaigns of lhdanovshchina and the requirements of cultural conformity. Part Three, covering the late- and post-Soviet era, explores the attempted 'deconstruction' of the traditional romance aesthetic, and argues that this period prompted the production of some of the most diverse and innovative Pushkin songs yet seen. But it also argues that, whilst the most recent Pushkin celebration in 1999 provided a valuable opportunity to showcase the rich history of Pushkin song, it also marked the end of the genre's development. The thesis will suggest that the ubiquitous influence of Push kin-era romances, and those of Glinka in particular, has made them the archetype of Pushkin song. Moreover, it will argue that the combined influence of these early romances, the conformity imposed by the celebrations, and the constraining effect of images of Push kin, have fostered an indelible association between Pushkin song and creative conservatism.

Rann, J. "A stowaway on the steamship of modernity : Pushkin and the Futurists." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2013. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1400392/.

Full text
Abstract:
The declared intention of the Russian Futurist poets to ‘throw Pushkin from the steamship of Modernity’, expressed in their manifesto Poshchechina obshchestvennomu vkusu, has come to define their attitude to Russia’s pre-eminent poet and the literature of the past in general. However, its ubiquity has led to a reductive approach to Futurism in the scholarship of Pushkin reception and Russian Modernism. This thesis will contribute to both fields, and to our understanding of Futurism, by showing how, contrary to their reputation, three signatories of Poshchechina—Velimir Khlebnikov, Vladimir Maiakovskii and Aleksei Kruchenykh—engaged with Pushkin and his legacy in complex ways throughout their careers. Pushkin will be shown to play an essential role in the strategies adopted by the Futurists to articulate their identities, both collectively and as individuals, and in the related project of the presentation of a radical new model of literary evolution. Close reading of specific works and broad theoretical contextualization will reveal two tendencies: iconoclasm, which continues to be an important, and sophisticated, aspect of Futurist identity, and a less obvious transformative impulse which treats Pushkin’s life and work as myths which can be adapted to help the poet respond to contemporary imperatives. After examining the development of a collective persona in the manifestos in the first chapter, I will devote a chapter each to the work of Khlebnikov, Maiakovskii and Kruchenykh, focusing on the way in which they use a specific motif or element of intertextuality to facilitate their self-expression. The notion of the poet as a sort of prophet will be analysed in relation to Khlebnikov’s conceptualization of time; Maiakovskii’s relationship with the state will be elucidated by examining his attitude to monuments and moving statues; Kruchenykh’s innovative use of quotation will be understood as a response to new forms of mass reception.

Abstract:
Newspapers are often bundled and packet on pallets to secure transport. Packing thebundles on pallets are often done with an automatic palletizer. For reliable operation, the bundle needed to have a correct position and orientation on the infeed conveyor.Wrong orientation can happen when the bundle is pushed from conveyor to thepalletisers conveyor. The main to reasons is wrong timing that leads to rotation of thebundle and to high pushing force that leads to tumbled bundles. The goal of thisproject is to make a prototype of a system that automatically adapts the pressure andsignal when to push using two laser sensors. One sensor sends a digital signal if laserbreaks, the other measure distance, e.g. bundle hight. The software was developed onan Arduino Uno board, and two interface board was made for voltage levelconversions. The prototype system managed to change pressure for different bundlesizes and timed the pushing signal correctly.

This work describes a practical and theoretical investigation of aerodynamic characteristics of a 1:6,5 scale model of a light twin-engined Piper Seneca III aircraft. Basically, two configurations are considered in this evaluation: clean wing and pusher nacelle. The principal objective is to evaluate the aerodynamic characteristics of the pusher configuration in three different positions, in order to obtain practical and theoretical data with reference to static pressure distribution on the surface of the aerofoil and of the nacelle in a power-off condition. The methodology employed used low speed wind tunnel test for the acquisition of experimental data for a selection of angles of attach, as cited. The generation of numerical data, to be compared the experimental equivalent, is though the use of a low order panel method. The experimental and theoretical results show that the presence of pusher nacelle in the positions mentioned generated interference, reducing the local lift of the aerofoil.

Full text
Abstract:
In Ovid’s Tristia and Epistulae Ex Ponto, the Latin poet constructs an elaborate poetic persona endowed with its own agency, which evokes the sympathy of the reader through engaging in various modes of discourse. This inquiry examines, in depth, how Ovid fashioned his poeta structus through complex modes of discourse and from making use of conventions of genre, namely elegy and epic. These modes of discourse are identified and explored, as well as Ovid’s markedly hyperbolic treatment of the landscape and inhabitants of his exilic outpost of Tomis on the Black Sea. The implications of the exile being surrounded by the Sarmatian and Getic languages are also expounded upon, both in the way the poeta presents the putative effects of the language of the other, as well as the evidence of linguistic evolution in the ‘actuality’ of Ovid’s situation. A comparison is drawn between Cicero’s notion of naufragium, ‘shipwreck,’ and Ovid’s refinement of the term, as well as the rhetorical treatment of exile as a form of death by both authors. Lastly, a special addendum takes a fresh look at Alexander Pushkin’s nuanced reception of the Ovidian poeta structus in his own exilic poetry from 1820-1825.

Abstract:
Divided into six chapters, our thesis examines the translation of Evgenyi Onegin, a novel in verse by Aleksandr Pushkin, in France and Japan in the 20th century. In Chapter 1, we introduce our methodological approach, including the eight elements of our translation analysis: the by-who, the who, the what, the for-who, the when, the why, the where, and the how. In Chapter 2, after a brief biography of the Russian poet, we examine his central work Evgenyi Onegin, and its unique structuro-phono-semantic synthesis. The first French mention of Pushkin was in the 19th century, and the 'transfer-related discourse' of that period is the focus of Chapter 3, particularly its creation of the myth of the poet's untranslatability, which would influence translators of the Pushkinian novel into the 20 th century. In Chapter 4, we examine the 11 French translations produced between 1902 and 1996. Because the Japanese discovery of foreign literature---and Pushkin---was the product of political changes during the Meiji period (1868-1912), it is paramount that we examine the pivotal role of 19 th century ideological discourse in which translation is viewed as a means and a condition for the country's modernization. Finally, in Chapter 6, we turn our attention to the 8 Japanese translations of the Pushkinian work produced between 1921 and 1996. Our aim is to demonstrate how the spatio-temporal change influenced the view of translation in general, and translations of Pushkin in particular.

Bellocq, Pablo. "Multi-disciplinary preliminary design assessments of pusher counter-rotating open rotors for civil aviation." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2012. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/10280.

Full text
Abstract:
As a consequence of fuel cost escalation and increased stringent engine emission regulations, interest in counter-rotating open rotor engines (CRORs) has been renewed. R&D efforts are currently ongoing to develop the technologies required to ensure the appropriate levels of structural integrity, noise, vibrations and reliability. The assessment of the impact of the main low pressure preliminary design and control parameters of CRORs on mission fuel burn, certification noise and emissions is necessary to identify optimum design regions. These assessments aid the development process when compromises need to be performed as a consequence of design, operational or regulatory constraints. These assessments are not possible with the state-of-the-art aero-engine preliminary design simulation tools. Novel 0-D performance models for counter-rotating propellers (CRPs) and differential planetary gearboxes, as well as 1-D and 0-D performance models for counter-rotating turbines (CRTs) were developed and verified using available data. These models were used to create 0-D pusher geared (GOR) and direct drive (DDOR) open rotor engine performance simulation modules allowing the independent definition of the design and operation of each of the two counter-rotating parts of the CRP and CRT. A multi-disciplinary preliminary design simulation framework was built using the novel engine performance modules together with dedicated CROR aircraft performance, engine geometry and weight, gaseous emissions and certification noise simulation modules. Design space exploration and trade-off studies were performed and minimum fuel burn design regions were identified for both the pusher GOR and DDOR. A 160 PAX aircraft flying a business mission of 500 NM was chosen for these studies. Based on the assumptions made, the main conclusions of these studies are as follows. · Fuel burn reductions of ~1-2% are possible through optimised propeller control · The propeller diameter for minimum mission fuel burn lies between 4.26 and 4.7 m · The design nozzle pressure ratio for minimum mission fuel burn lies between 1.55 and 1.6 · CRPs with 13 or 14 blades per propeller provide minimum mission fuel burn · Increasing spacing between the propellers reduces noise significantly (~6 EPNdB for each certification point) with a relatively small fuel burn penalty (~0.3-0.5%) · Relative to unclipped designs, 20% clipped CRPs reduce flyover noise by at least 2.5 EPNdB and approach noise by at least 4.5 EPNdB. The corresponding fuel burn penalty is ~2 % for a GOR and ~3.5% for a DDOR. · Sideline and flyover noise can be reduced by increasing the diameter of the CRP and appropriately controlling CRP rotational speeds. Approach noise can be reduced by either reducing the diameters or the rotational speeds of the propellers. · The rotational speed of the forward propeller for minimum noise is higher than that for minimum mission fuel burn for all the studied CROR designs. · Regardless of clipping, reducing the rotational speed of the rear propeller relative to the forward propeller reduces noise and, to a certain limit, also mission fuel burn. (further reductions in rotational speed would have an adverse effect on fuel burn) · An increase in the number of blades results in an increase in certification noise. The main recommendations for further work are as follows. · Integrating the 1-D CRT model with the 0-D DDOR performance model in order to assess the impact of different CRT design criteria at engine and mission levels · Developing preliminary design methods to account for changes in aircraft weight and aerodynamics due to changes in engine design and required cabin noise treatment.

Nolan, Jessica. "Post-stroke lateropulsion – pushing for a greater understanding of rehabilitation and recovery." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2023. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/2737.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Post-stroke lateropulsion is prevalent. A person with lateropulsion actively pushes their body across the midline toward their more affected side and/or actively resists weight shift toward the less affected side. Aims: The objectives of this thesis were to; investigate outcomes associated with post-stroke lateropulsion; understand short- and long-term rehabilitation needs of affected people; and provide recommendations for rehabilitation best-practice. This thesis aimed to: Determine the association of lateropulsion severity (Four Point Pusher Score: 4PPS), with functional change (Functional Independence Measure: FIM) and length of stay (LOS) in inpatient rehabilitation; Investigate accuracy of the Australian National Sub-Acute and Non-Acute Patient Classification (AN-SNAP) funding model to predict LOS for people with post-stroke lateropulsion; Explore associations between 4PPS, mobility status, adverse event occurrence, and FIM at three, six, nine and twelve months post-stroke; Explore associations between lateropulsion presence and aspects of stroke pathology, derived from neuroimaging data; and Develop international consensus on lateropulsion terminology, best-practice rehabilitation, and future research priorities. Methods: This research comprised three sections: Section 1. Retrospective outcome data (4PPS, FIM, and LOS) for 1,087 participants admitted to a stroke rehabilitation unit (SRU) were analysed. Individual comparisons were made between AN-SNAP-predicted and actual LOS. Section 2. The prospective longitudinal cohort study included 144 consecutive SRU admissions. Acute stroke imaging results were coded based on consensus from two neuroradiologists. Lateropulsion severity, FIM, mobility status, and adverse event occurrence were recorded at SRU admission, discharge and three, six, nine and twelve months post-stroke and tested for association with lateropulsion resolution. Section 3. A Delphi Panel Process addressed lateropulsion terminology, best-practice rehabilitation, and research priorities. The process included four survey rounds. Round One consisted of 13 open questions. Subsequent rounds ascertained levels of agreement with statements derived from Round One. Results: Section 1. Complete lateropulsion resolution was recorded in 69.4% of those admitted with mild lateropulsion, 49.3% of those with moderate lateropulsion, and 18.8% of those with severe lateropulsion. Average FIM change was lower in those admitted with severe lateropulsion than those without lateropulsion (p < 0.001). Higher admission 4PPS was associated with reduced FIM efficiency (p < 0.001), longer LOS (p < 0.001), and reduced likelihood of discharge home (p < 0.001). Reported LOS exceeding AN-SNAP-predicted LOS was associated with greater admission lateropulsion severity. Greater FIM improvement was associated with reported LOS exceeding AN-SNAP-predicted LOS (p < 0.001). Section 2. Eighty-two participants (56.9%) had lateropulsion on admission. Stroke lesion volume was not associated with lateropulsion presence or resolution. Haemorrhagic stroke was associated with lateropulsion presence (p=0.002) and long-term persistence (p=0.015). Odds of resolved lateropulsion increased longitudinally from discharge for people who participated in rehabilitation-focused physiotherapy (p < 0.001). Section 3. Twenty international experts completed four rounds of the process. There was ‘some agreement’ (50%) that ‘lateropulsion’ was the recommended term to describe the condition. Consensus ( ≥ 75% agreement) was achieved regarding 119 rehabilitation recommendations. Conclusions: Given a sufficient duration of skilled rehabilitation, people with post-stroke lateropulsion can achieve meaningful short- and long-term improvements. The consensus-based recommendations provide guidance in selecting rehabilitation approaches that will likely facilitate the best possible outcomes in people with post-stroke lateropulsion.

Abstract:
Alexander Pushkin devoted the last five years of his life to research in the imperial archives in St. Petersburg publishing a number of works dealing with such historical figures as Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, Boris Godunov, and the rebel leaders Mazepa and Pugachev. This thesis examines Pushkin's historiographical methodology and conclusions and considers Pushkin's writings from the viewpoint of the historian rather than the literary critic. It offers a chronological study of the four fictional and non-fictional works in which Pushkin analysed major figures and events in Russian history and traces the importance he attributed to them for the development of the Russian national consciousness. The themes of rebellion against the state and political legitimacy predominate in this investigation and shed light on how Pushkin's study of history reinforced and, in some instances altered, his own fundamental political and social beliefs.

Abstract:
Painted in 1937 as part of the centenary celebration of the death of Alexander Pushkin, Nikolai Ulyanov's A. S. Pushkin and his Wife, N. N. Pushkina at the Imperial Ball has been lauded as the quintessential example of Soviet history painting. Modern scholars have followed the lead of Soviet critics, who praised the painting for its insight into the psychology of the brilliant poet repressed by the tyrannical tsarist regime. According to this interpretation, Soviet viewers in the 1930s were to ponder on the tragedy of Pushkin's demise and rejoice that the victory of Socialism had freed them from such repression. However, this thesis suggests that Ulyanov embedded a secondary, subversive message in his masterpiece. Through careful manipulation of Pushkin's complex semiotic significance, Socialist Realist dialectics, and the Aesopian method, Ulyanov crafted an image that could be celebrated for its adherence to Soviet ideology, while simultaneously suggesting to those who detected his clues that artistic repression had not ended with the revolution. In this subversive reading, Ulyanov's masterwork becomes a psychological self-portrait of an artist living under Stalinist oppression during the Great Terror.

Abstract:
This Master's Thesis presents and analyses the problems involved in the transfer1 of the name and the works of Alexandre Pushkin in nineteenth century France. Pushkin, Russia's national poet and its most revered author, is little known in France, where his works are often considered untranslatable. The reasons for this phenomenon lie in the first non-translational transfers of Pushkin, followed by the first attempts of translational transfers that came only to raise the existing stereotypes into dogmas, which were reinforced by the theoretical thoughts on the art of translation developed by the translating subjects of the time. The present study analyses the influence of the para-text and of empiricism on the transfer, reception and perception of Pushkin and his works, as they evolved in the course of nineteenth century France.<br>1"Translation" in French. Abstract:
Nyckelord:  Industridesign, Teknisk design, Konstruktion, Master pin pusher, Produktutveckling,  Ergonomi, Nevo Maskin AB<br>This is a bachelor degree project in Industrial design engineering at Luleå University of Technology. It has been carried out at the request of Nevo Maskin AB, a company that performs service and repairs on heavy construction equipment. The project has been executed in collaboration with Sigma Industry East North in Luleå. The purpose of this project is to improve and simplify the work with a Trackpress. The work process must be made safe, mobile and ergonomic for the user. The Trackpress is a tool that is used for dismantling and replacing the master pin in the link of the caterpillar chain on excavators. The project covers the middle segment of excavators which means excavators between 12 to 45 tons and this is the most common segment of excavators repaired by Nevo Maskin AB. The Trackpress tool used by Nevo Maskin AB consists of three parts: a frame that is placed over the caterpillar chain, a hydraulic cylinder that expands by compressed air and a compressor that controls the compressed air. Supplementary parts are needed between the link and cylinder in order for it to reach the master pin, here they use whatever they have in reach. The exciting Trackpress weighs 86 kgs and cannot be lifted by one sole person, a lifting device must be used. Sometimes two people lifts it but this is not to recommend because of the great risk of injuries. To improve the Trackpress the project has been carried out through a design process with five phases of planning, feasibility study, literature study, ideation and detail development to develop a concept. in one of the phases, Ideation, we have worked with workshops where the members draw, discuss, and write down all the ideas generated. By using different methods and groups of people in the workshops we got different angles and points of view on the problem. Furthermore we have done field trips, user studies, interviews market research and creative methods to develop a concept that was drawn in NX and Inventor. The final concept consists of three parts, a frame constructed by two parallel steel plates with another plate in the rear, a jack for positioning the cylinder, which is placed on top of the jack and between the parallel plates and a additional part for centering the tool over the chain. In the bottom there are two rails that keep the jack in place. A concept for transporting the tool has been left for future development. The concept idea gives the user safer handling of the tool and a more ergonomic way of working with it. The weight and the material consumtion has been reduced. This improvement also reduces de production cost whitch gives the company an advantage against other competitors in the same segment.   Keywords: Industrial design engineering, Master pin pusher, Construction, Product development, Ergonomics, Nevo Maskin AB

Abstract:
The aim of my work is to show the results of my research about the influence exerted by the Tacitus' Annals on the composition of Dostoevsky's novel The Devils. This research is part of the debate on the relations between Dostoevsky and Classical literature raised by V. Ivanov, L. Shestov, S. Bulgakov, N.Berdjaev. This field of study has been recently renewed, among the others, by T. Molchukova and Hyung Goo Lee as regards the passion of the novelist to the Homeric epics, by T. Popovich and G. Rosenshield on the similarities with Aeschilean and Sophoclean tragedy, by V. Dudkin on the similarities with Aristophanean comedy and by D.H.Larmour concerning Orpheus' myth and Foma Fomich. An aspect which has not been really taken into account by the critics is the connection between Latin historiography, in particular Tacitus, and the works of Dostoevsky. However, in his Diary of a writer (1876) Dostoevsky draws an immediate link between lawyer V. Spasovich (the model for the character of Fetyukovich) and the Tacitean Vibulenus. The passion of the Russian writer for Tacitean historiography derived not only from a direct reading of Tacitus in French translation with facing Latin text, but also from the mediation of N. Karamzin’s and A.S. Pushkin’s works. This work proposes an analysis of The Devils highlighting how Dostoevsky's style reveals the influence of the Annals in the narrator's delineation of characters and plot development, in order to address fundamental issues such as the role of the usurper and suicide. My purpose is to demonstrate that the dialogue between the Russian intelligentsia and Tacitus, begun by Karamzin and Pushkin, finds in Dostoevsky its ultimate fulfillment.

Full text
Abstract:
Furnaces that heat metal parts (blooms) prior to hot-working processes such as rolling or forging are called pre-forming reheat furnaces. In these furnaces, the fundamental idea is to heat the blooms to a prescribed temperature without very large temperature gradients in them. This is to ensure correct performance of the metal parts subsequent to reheating. Due to the elevated temperature in the furnace chamber, radiation is the dominant mode of heat transfer from the furnace to the bloom. In addition, there is convection heat transfer from the hot gases to the bloom. The heat transfer within the bloom is by conduction. In order to design a new furnace or to improve the performance of existing ones, the heat transfer analysis has to be done accurately. Given the complex geometry and large number of parameters encountered in the furnace, an analytical solution is difficult, and hence numerical modeling has to be resorted to. In the present work, a numerical technique for modelling the steady-state and transient heat transfer in a reheat furnace is developed. The work mainly involves the development of a radiation heat transfer analysis code for a reheat furnace, since a major part of the heat transfer in the furnace chamber is due to radiation from the roof and combustion gases. The code is modified from an existing finite volume method (FVM) based radiation heat transfer solver, The existing solver is a general purpose radiation heat transfer solver for enclosures and incorporates the following features: surface-to-surface radiation, gray absorbing-emitting medium in the enclosure, multiple reflections off the bounding walls, shadowing effects due to obstructions in the enclosure, diffuse reflection and enclosures with irregular geometry. As a part of the present work, it has now been extended to include the following features that characterise radiation heat transfer in the furnace chamber · Combination of specular and diffuse reflection as is the case with most real surfaces · Participating non-gray media, as the combustion gases in the furnace chamber exhibit highly spectral radiative characteristics Transient 2D conduction heat transfer within the metal part is then modelled using a FVM-based code. Radiation heat flux from the radiation model and convection heat flux calculated using existing correlations act as boundary conditions for the conduction model. A global iteration involving the radiation model and the conduction model is carried out for the overall solution. For the study, two types of reheat furnaces were chosen; the pusher-type furnace and the walking beam furnace. The difference in the heating process of the two furnaces implies that they have to be modelled differently. In the pusher-type furnace, the heating of the blooms is only from the hot roof and the gas. In the walking beam furnace, the heating is also from the hearth and the blooms adjacent to any given bloom. The model can predict the bloom residence time for any particular combination of furnace conditions and load dimensions. The effects of variations of emissivities of the load, thickness of the load and the residence time of billet in the furnaces were studied.

Abstract:
The present work deal with analysis of propulsion and maneuvering systems for pusher-barge system, and results on the maneuverability of convoys. It analyzes the conventional propulsion system (rudder plus propeller), the azimuth system and combined auxiliary equipment bow with each of these propulsion systems. Presents the mathematical modeling of propulsion and maneuvering systems mentioned, which served as the basis for implementation of a computational simulator used to obtain the results of this dissertation. The hydrodynamic forces and moments are obtained by the method of hydrodynamic derivatives for simulations about service speed, while for simulations at low speed used a semi - empirical method based on the principle of cross-flow. Initially, performed the validation of the simulation results with the literature for the case of pusher-barge system with conventional propulsion. Then the model was adapted to other types of propulsion and maneuvering systems proposed. The results show that there is a greater efficiency of azimuth propulsion system and equipment in the bow to maneuver at low speeds, which makes it suitable for application in river transport, because these vessels navigate slower speeds compared to other types of vessels.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This dissertation addresses two questions fundamental to Russian nineteenth-century intellectual history: 1) Why does literature about paranoid psychosis figure so centrally in the nineteenth-century canon? and 2) How did the absence of an epistemological tradition of reflexive self-consciousness influence the development of Russian ideas of subjectivity? I propose that the presence of paranoia in Russian fiction extends beyond the medical or psychoanalytic aspects of character traits or themes. I argue that literary representations of paranoia perform fundamental philosophical gestures and function as "epistemological speech acts." Russian narratives of paranoia (e.g., Pushkin, Gogol, Dostoevsky, Chekhov, Garshin, Sologub) constitute a means of exploring the operations of a self-reflexive consciousness, familiar in the West through the Cartesian Cogito. In other words, the theme of paranoia in nineteenth-century Russian fiction actively responds to the regnant philosophical discourse and functions as a praxis for the exploration of philosophical questions. However, this is done in an alternative discourse to the propositional language generally favored in philosophical texts; as a result, the philosophical function of the fictions of paranoia has gone unrecognized, and the genre has been "exiled" from philosophical discourse. I argue that Russian texts of paranoid psychosis should be reconceived as venues for the play of the transcendental ego outside social or communal axes. Paranoia emerges as the Jakobsonian “dominant” within these texts, in that it is paranoia that engages with other narrative components and transforms them. Further, as prose fiction, these texts had the discursive and social capacity to resonate and divagate in ways impossible to philosophical texts. Ultimately, these narratives of paranoia are meta-epistemologies that interrogate their own discursive function and status. They raise critical questions not only about the ways in which we represent truth but about the ontological status of truth itself.<br>Slavic Languages and Literatures

Abstract:
The dissertation focuses on the human and literary journey of Fedor Sologub (1863-1927), and particularly on the writer’s masterpiece, the novel Melkiy bes (The Petty Demon), written between 1892 and 1902. It analyzes some of the main themes of Melkiy bes, that Sologub interprets according to his own vision of the world, and develops in a constant dialogue with the Russian literature of the past (especially Pushkin, Gogol, Dostoevsky, Chekhov). It examines the theme of the devil, starting from the title Melkiy bes and the evil creature called Nedotykomka; then it analyzes the figure of the "little man" and the theme of madness. A section is also dedicated to the figure of A.S. Pushkin, as presented by the protagonist of the novel Peredonov, and followed by Sologub's conception of the greatest poet of Russia. A reflection is devoted also to the role of the parallel plot of Melkiy bes, the story of Lyudmila and Sasha, that offers only apparently an alternative to the evil world of peredonovščina.

Abstract:
This thesis concerns with specified problems of an electric traction. It deals with the concept of module controlling EC motor of the voltage 24V and the current 100A. There are described possibilities and principles of controlling EC motor in detail. For controlling, the single-purpose IO MC33035, which is directly specified for it, is used. The thesis describes implementation of both testing and final versions of converter for a circulating pump drive of a cooling circuit in locomotives. The convertor is partly universal and can be used in other applications. According to the implemented convertor, a laboratory test and a model protocol were made. In the second part, the concept is described as well as the implementation of DC/DC conventor of output voltage of 24V and which is supplied by 12V battery. The specified output current is 4A. It is used for supplying of the controlling traction vehicle unit and is installed as a boost convertor which contains a resonance conventor. The presentation of measured parameters of the complete convertor is either a part of this thesis.

Gauthier, Stanislas. "Enfermements idéologiques et ouvertures poétiques : trois écrivains traducteurs de Pouchkine pendant la guerre froide : Aragon, Landolfi et Nabokov." Thesis, Bordeaux 3, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015BOR30072.

Abstract:
Elle propose enfin de considérer d’une autre manière la prose poétique, la parodie et l’histoire littéraire<br>Focusing on the extreme political tensions during the 1937-1982 time span, this work suggests that the status of translation can be considered from a different angle based on the works of Aragon, of Landolfi and of Nabokov, writers and translators of Pushkin. Studying the examples of those writers and translators, discussing and expanding upon the theory of Henri Meschonnic, this work defends the idea that close links exist between context, writing and translation. The three main translation circuits of the period are initially presented introducing the study of the confrontation between the translators and the political forces. A closer look at the corpus of translations shows the important activity of Aragon, Landolfi and Nabokov at that period. The third part of this work concentrates on the ways of editing translations of Russian literature in the West through the study of anthologies of translations and retranslations. The historical character of the translations of Pushkin’s works leads to reconsider their links to the context. The study reveals that Communists and Capitalists refused to actually take into account the Evil experience that the name “Auschwitz” summarizes. In response, on a literary level, literalism promoted by Aragon, Landolfi and Nabokov during the Cold War has for vocation the respect of the will of the deceased author. The decision to translate Pushkin also represents a reaction to the division of the world. The Russian poet questions the conflict in his works and does not refuse to confront the question of Evil through a literary style based on morals. The final section of this thesis promotes the idea of continuity between the translations and the other works of Aragon, of Landolfi and of Nabokov. It demonstrates to what extent the name, the figure and the works of Pushkin influenced those writers and translators. Finally, poetic prose, parody and literary history are reconsidered from an entirely new angle

Abstract:
This work examines the expression of Love in an interdisciplinary approach to literature and music in Germany and Russia during the Romantic Period. The starting point is Socrates’ classical discourse about Love and his definition of it, which Plato recorded in his Symposium. This will be applied to and examined in the Romantic Period, first in German and Russian literature and later in Music. What changes occur in the reception of this term? What differences or possible parallels can be determined in the two cultures and mentalities that are different at first sight? What is the influence of the respective artists on these changes? The results will be applied to the individual works of the writers A. Pushkin and E.T.A. Hoffmann as well as the musical settings of these works by the composers P. Tchaikovsky and R. Schumann. This examination, which is based primarily on literature and literary criticism, places the concept of Love in the foreground, even above the person or the work of the respective artist. Therefore, the primary goal of this work is to follow the reception of Plato’s “theory of love” during the Romantic Period. The concepts of one’s own inconstancy, the development of beauty, and the path of love correspond with the metacognitive philosophy of the Romantics. The subject of love has particular significance today because of the media’s frequent discussions about the crisis of moral values. Love is transmedial. It transcends the subjective lives of humans, the objective external conditions, culture and mentality, literature and music; and it remains a desire, an ambition, an idea. Love is active and bridges every boundary as a communicational code or as nature’s utmost attempt to lead an individual out of himself and to another.

Abstract:
This dissertation is based on ethnographic fieldwork in Pushkar, India, a Hindu pilgrimage site that doubles as an international tourist destination with an influx of two million visitors each year. Here, I explore the massive enterprise on the part of Pushkar locals to build “heaven on earth,” paying particular attention to how the articulation of sacred space works alongside economic changes brought on by globalization and tourism. Central to my work is an investigation of how tourism and global thinking affect everyday life in this pilgrimage site, and how Hindu ideas—about religion, identity, and belonging—shape the contours of tourism; the goal, then, is to show how religion and tourism are in fact mutually constitutive. In examining the entanglements of making Pushkar paradise, I look to a number of different topics: beliefs about Hindu universalism and how its principles incorporate people from outside of the Hindu fold; ritual repertoires that brahmans perform on behalf of their clients in order to propitiate the gods; mythic tales that boast of Pushkar’s greatness, printed in 5-rupee pamphlets or narrated by priests at the lake; environmental action taken up by locals worried about lake pollution; and guided tours designed to promote the kind of atmosphere where people from around the world can feel as if they belong.
